There is an alarming conclusion to a new study about unexplained infant deaths, black infants in this country are dying at a much higher rate. In fact, the new research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published in the medical journal pediatrics finds the death rate hit an all time high for black infants in 2020, the first year of the pandemic. The deaths fall under the category of sudden unexplained infant death syndrome, which is part of what many people are familiar with sids, but adding the element of accidental suffocation and strangulation. Why is this happening? The study's authors say it could be a statistical anomaly, but a companion commentary to the study suggests black families that already have less access to healthcare had even less during the pandemic. Kyle Cooper, WTO news. Americans have long had an intense conversation about what race and ethnicity says about who they are. Now the federal government is thinking about changes to how it sorts people in two different racial and ethnic groups. One idea would create a new category for people of Middle Eastern and North African descent who are currently classified as white.
