"national center missing" Discussed on 4 Things with Amy Brown

"Pretty. He was pretty beautiful. Thing a little mouth up because kick four with amy brown. Happy thursday we're going to be doing something a little bit different today for the four things. I'm not going to have my typical for things imaging dividing up the topics. 'cause i'm sitting here with chris. Hanson who's an investigative journalists. And i just feel like this topic is very serious. You likely know chris. He's done a lot of amazing work but he's at least known in my mind. I sure from dateline. Nbc's to catch a predator and he also has a podcast where he's revisiting. Some of those cases called predators. I have caught. And i just think this is such an important topic and chris thank you so much for for joining me in this discussion and helping raise awareness and remind everyone including me as a parent and some of my other parent. Listeners are shoot. Even if you're not appearance is good to remember that online predators out there and this is very real and you know we need to be aware of that. You don't want to believe that it could happen to art trades right th. They're raised not really they've been taught some rules. But think about this. Amy you know seventeen years ago. We did the first predator investigation in bethpage long island. I was ensure if anybody would show up even for that whether or not i had wasted tens of thousands of dollars in the networks money. Seventeen years later just a few months ago. We're in michigan and again guys show up to meet underage boys and girls for sex. We had a michigan state corrections officer. Prison guard we had a guy who had done contracting work. In the governor's mansion. This is just months ago as we get ready to launch a whole new television editor investigative series. I honestly thought that it would be a one or two episodes bent on dateline in that by the third time we did it. There was a very good chance. No one would show off. That people have learned their lesson now fast forward in especially during the pandemic when the national center missing and exploited. Children will tell you that the the amount of predatory contacts online has exploded when we started. We merely had decoys in chat rooms on. Aol and yahoo will today. You can't even keep track of all the social media platforms besides the you know the obvious the tectonics the directive gain in the twitter twitch in you know the dating websites i mean it. It's really difficult to keep track of so there is more potential now in terms of social media platforms and more potential because kids are spending more time on line. This is where they get educated. This is where they have their social interaction and this is where they explore. So this is where it's happening so it's very important to have this conversation with your kids about being safe online and starts with an age appropriate conversation. What would you say to a parent. that's like. oh that's just never going to happen to my kid. Wake up you have to start with. The conversation of the kids are young. And as i mentioned before age appropriate and kids respond to this. I think there are people out there who want to trick you on the internet. Kids don't like to be tricked. And you don't wanna get too heavy into explicit in too deep into it early because you'll lose but if you start there and as they get older you. Some examples of how adults have preyed upon children line. I think he can get their attention in the problem here with this particular crime is that we don't have an effective way of demand reduction we have punishment and there is treatment available. But it's not a sexy part of medicine. We talk about drugs. We can treat it more as a sickness than crime addiction it. We don't have the ability to treat this as an addiction. We don't have the understanding to delineate between addictive behavior. criminal behavior. Sociopathic behavior is just all lumped into one category and so it becomes very difficult to to piece it out to know who can be treated and put on parole. Define who needs to be locked up for life you know. It's it's not a very sexy aspect of medicine who have some very dedicated people who are studying predators and pedophile behind bars. And they're getting some some honest answers from these people but there is still no roadmap to fix the problem. And i doubt there ever will be so your best defense is protecting your children having that discussion having dialogue and taking physical precautions technical precautions with your various devices. And there's no issue. I think is appearance snooping. Sometimes you need to know what's going on. What is the main platform. I know that yeah in the last few years. There's so many other different avenues that have popped up but is there still a main way that they're doing it. it shift. Cmih can be skipped the games one day it can be a dating website. Wouldn't day can be talk. One day can be all kinds of things but the one thing that all of these events have in common is at once the contact is made on the social media platform. It changes over to communication directly on the smartphone in. So you need to have some sort of monitoring. When i was growing up the advice was don't talk to strangers was could advice then good advice now but the difference now. Is that the person contacting your child online. Who's a stranger on. A wednesday may be so adept at grooming at cajoling. It convincing your child that this person is someone different that it's another kid or whatever that is not a stranger by the end of the week and that's when this gard draws in his comfort level starts to e created and that's the dangerous now you mentioned grooming and i think that it is a skill i mean. It's a really scary one but some are very very good at it to where you know. I don't know a kid for sure doesn't even realize that that's what's happening like if you're an adult that's aware you're onto it so you're not gonna fall for it but a kid isn't review hundreds and hundreds of pages of transcripts with thousands of pages of transcripts. You know that. I've read over the years. You see a pattern but and it's frightening and especially we go back now and do the podcast where we look back these cases where these guys are now you know. Did they go to straight. Did they go to prison. What happened in in week..

"Exempt putting the content of your photos to creating a one way cryptographic hash and then matching that with the database. So it's different than if they were doing it on the phone itself and it makes sense to me because apple as a company should not want to be warehousing Child sexual abuse imagery or child pornography on its servers. Okay well let me ask you this then because maybe this is badly reported Most of the stories. I've i've seen are indicating that is people's phones that are being examined but it could very well be just i cloud. Would you have a problem if it was something that was accessing your phone. That was not storing pictures cloud. I think it's a little more invasive when it's on the actual device itself and not in the cloud because apple does not necessarily have an argument to say that they are then in possession of those images those files that data when it's solely on your device so i would say their interest would be a hell of a lot less compelling but it with force would have to be balanced approach. I think it would for me. 'cause far more privacy concerns than when something is backed up to the cloud and i will tell you this has been going on for quite some time about four years ago. I actually had a case. Where a young person in his twenties had backed up files to google photos and google photos from computers from an actual machine. It was a windows machine. And i see the google program. Scans the entire hard drive and looks for Files uploads all those japex files or jif gift files have no rob was gonna correct me that if i if i correct myself and And before and upload them to google photos and then google photos. Once they're there would then kick created cryptographic hash just like apple is doing and compare that with the database from the national center for missing exploited children. And what happened in this case was that there were hits and the national center for missing. Explaining children contacted the florida department of law enforcement and said at this. Ip address is somebody who's in possession of several images of child pornography next thing you know florida department of law enforcement knocks on the door with a warrant goes and searches the computer and this person was arrested for possession of child pornography now. The interesting thing was that they were arrested and charged and The machine actually was in a doctor's office that many many people could have accessed at any particular time. It was there for years. It was only recently put into this particular house so in this person who was in his early twenties. Did that scan. And upload those photos to google. He had no idea that there was child pornography on that particular device but yet he was charged with child pornography possession of child pornography so the implications of this can be very very severe I do have to say. I like what apple did so that. If there are a certain number of hits meaning matches between the hashes of the files that you will upload to apple and the national end that matched the hashes of known child pornography or child sexual abuse imagery with the national center for missing exploited children's database if those match it doesn't necessarily mean that the data goes directly over to nick mic. That there are going to be some apple moderators who are then going to be able to decrypt those files. Examine them and make a determination as to whether or not a crime has been committed. That should be reported to the national center missing exploited. Children go ahead. I'm the one interesting thing about this case. Is that The the The heavy the heavy lifting is being done users phone. So this is. This is software. That's running on the phone that scanning the images on the phone and then phoning home about them and Yana basic Ownership of your device level. This is raising a lot of concern from people who okay you know. Maybe maybe i'm not I maybe. I have nothing to hide as far as You know pictures of exploited or abused. Children go but maybe i just don't want something scanning the stuff on my phone telling someone else about it. And should i have. Should i be able to make maintain control over whether or not that is going on. That is one issue. Another is this is all based on hashes and what a lot of people might not know is that the hashes are not perfect. They're not dependable. If you edit one pixel in a photo the entire hash of defile changed if you had it one one alphanumeric in the meta data the the whole Hash of the file has changed. So it's very easy to change the hash of a file if you do have something objectionable. It's also possible. Not mathematically likely but possible for a completely different image to have the same hash as one of the objectionable images. So like this is. This is not a perfect science but it's also it's also raising questions of like should i. Should i be allowed to say what does it doesn't run on my own. Okay so alex this is. This is what i was talking about. There is a conflict here. Is it being run on the phone. Or is it being ron at apple headquarters in their on their cloud servers are they. Where are they doing the searching. I said well it's a big no. I don't really think it's that much difference in end. I understand what. Robbins having accompanies scanning a device that i own. That's.
