"Can we talk about the girl that was in the vegetative state that all of the news broke like since we talk. I I saw a picture of the guy. Okay. Yes. Same and. Okay. So let's just stay the he was an LPN. So. He was not an RN. But because that was my first thing I was like looking at him. And I'm like no way he's like an RN because he just doesn't look like he could be that could be judgmental. He just didn't look the part. You know what I mean? I was just like, okay. He's not like when you think of a nurse. You think of somebody that's like clean cut and their life together and stuff like this guy. Just didn't look like he had it altogether. You know what I'm saying? I feel. Yeah. No. He looked like he hadn't bathed in days. So so remember how we were talking about, you know, could she feel like being in pain or anything? So right. We got a message. And it says I live in Arizona, and I just heard your podcast about the topic of the lady in Arizona having a baby a vegetative situation. They had an interview with an OBGYN doctor, and he mentioned that she felt every ounce of pain delivering the baby and pain throughout the pregnancy. So sad how this all went down. But an article came out, they found the guy who impregnated the woman and two of the doctors in charge of the women resigned from the facility, you ladies are awesome. While the podcast can't wait for next week. So. So first of all, thank you. And Secondly that is so disgusting to me that she had to suffer. Through all of that through all of it. And I know that this guy is responsible for impregnating her, but the CEO that resigned, which was the first thing that came out before they announced that they hid linked DNA to this Nathan Sutherland. Why did he voluntarily resign? And that was my first thought because I did see that come out. I and I was like, but why unless he had something to do with it. Why would he resign? I guess because it happened in his facility, but still and less. It was like the company gave him a choice to say he was voluntarily resigning or he could not have the toys, and he would just be made to resign. I don't know. I just feel like there's something to that more than what has been released and what we have access to knowing. But basically for those who have not followed up were no anymore information about this. This Nathan Nathan Sutherland was arrested after the investigators headed tained DNA samples, and there was a link to him like it was like a a act match. And I believe that the judge had sent some type of order that he had to give DNA. So I don't know if he was maybe refusing to give DNA or CEO or the or Mason Nathan. Yeah, he was court ordered to give the DNA sample. So I don't know because originally when we started reading up on this. It was like everybody was voluntarily giving DNA samples and DNA. Yeah. So this guy was actually court ordered to do it. And. Yeah. I just I cannot believe that this is even something that exist. I will say that we thought vegetative state meant being in some form of coma. And I mean, I don't know if I thought it was like a coma. But I definitely thought that like she wasn't. Aware of her surroundings. Right. So the family wanted the media to know and wanted to make it very clear that she was not in a coma. And she had significant intellectual disabilities. Just as a result of seizures in her early childhood, and she does not have ability to speak, but she does have some ability to move limbs her head in her neck and she's able to make facial gestures. And that she likes to be read to enjoy soft music, and she is capable of responding to people with familiar voices. So the difference in being a coma and innovative state. Is that coma is completely unresponsive? And does not react to why sand they cannot feel pain and their eyes remained closed and it's normally for like a definite period of time. So it's like days weeks months. And a vegetative state is still an unconscious state. But basically, they can have unlike they can have involuntary. I'm movement they can grind their teeth..

"Get some perspective. Bruce St James and Pamela Hughes. KTAR news on ninety two three FM. For the past couple of weeks. We've been consumed by this story at hacienda healthcare when we first learned about a woman incapacitated, in some way, shape or form that remains to be debated had given birth to a child something that you could not have consented to the search went on. And yesterday. We heard from Phoenix police that they think they got their guy. He is thirty six year old Nathan Sutherland Sutherland is a licensed practical nurse who is responsible for providing care to the victim during this time, the sexual assault occurred Sutherland is being booked as we speak into the miracle pecan jail where he'll be charged with one count of sexual assault and one count of vinyl vulnerable adult abuse in connection with this crime. So joining us right now in studio dive into this a little bit more is Darren Burridge, former Phoenix police sergeant in author of twisted, but true. Book. Thank you for being here. My pleasure. Unfortunately, you're you're the guy we go to to try to get more perspective on these stories, especially this kind of story because you spent well over a decade on the front lines working with the sex crimes unit within Phoenix police department. Correct. I did. And so you have a different perspective. And I want to get that perspective because we're talking about DNA evidence here, and well, I know that you're not like the DNA expert you've dealt with at a heck of a lot more than we have. We do have an expert that we're working on getting on tomorrow. So folks are gonna let us stick around for that. But the the suspect's attorney said this at his initial court appearance yesterday, and I want you to react to it on the other side. Take a listen, there's no direct evidence that Mr. Sutherland has committed these acts. I know at this point.

"News. Bruce St James and Pamela Hughes yesterday morning, we came into work and the Phoenix police department held a press conference where they announced the arrest of a suspect in the hacienda healthcare sexual assault case, she is thirty six year old Nathan Sutherland Sutherland is a licensed practical nurse who was responsible for providing care to the victim during this time, the sexual assault occurred Sutherland is being booked as we speak into the mirror COPA county jail where he'll be charged with one count of sexual assault and one count of vinyl vulnerable adult abuse in connection with this crime. All right. So after chief Williams spoke, you had sergeant Tommy Thompson stepped to the mic and explain why it is that they arrested Sutherland, the scientists in the Phoenix police crime crime laboratory determined the sample obtained from Sutherland matched the baby. Okay. So the DNA of Sutherland match the DNA of. Of the baby. Okay. So now, we're all trying to learn more about who is this nurse, Nathan Sutherland and right? We're finding out that he doesn't have a criminal background police said that there was no felony or misdemeanor convictions or charges in his background, basically clean record. And even after I was right around the time. We were getting off the air yesterday. Bruce Sutherland had his initial court appearance. He was down at the court in his his attorney spoke for him. The only thing he said was his name and his birth date. Which is pretty typical. That's the way things go, but take a listen a little bit to what is turning had to say. There's no direct evidence that Mr. Sutherland has committed these acts. I know at this point there.

"KTAR in-depth Senate this time, I am answering the arrest of the suspect we believe who is responsible. He is thirty six year old Nathan Sutherland that was Phoenix police chief Jerry Williams about twenty four hours ago announcing the arrest of Nathan Sutherland the man suspected of sexually assaulting and impregnating. An incapacitated patient at hacienda healthcare chief Williams joining us on the newsmaker line this morning live to talk more about the arrest and the investigation. Thanks, thanks for being with us. You bet could there be more arrests based on the vulnerable adults and failure to protect laws. In other words, people who didn't report this guy or fail to rein him in. So so what I said yesterday is at work continuing our investigation we were fortunate to be able to identify the suspect and arrest him, but our investigation continues. So that's not outside of their. I'm a possibility, but we're going to go where the investigation leads us. And I know the possibility that there could be more victims is always being considered by your department as well, exactly. So so again, we're going to go where the investigation leads us. I have full faith and confidence in our investigators. They got us to this point so far, and we want to continue on to make sure that what that we just continue our investigation. Are there any indications at this point that there are more victims not that I'm aware of? But again, we will let the evidence and the facts take us where it leads us our commitment to all of our victims in our community is still very sounding very strong. And I know that the crime lab excuse me, turn to crime lab. Investigators are really still working on this. We talked to a forensic scientist who's a professor nowadays you who actually worked in the Phoenix police lab for for many years. She basically says that. Yeah. You know, in the way, you interpret DNA evidence there could be some, you know, differences. But for the most part DNA evidence is is pretty solid stuff. I'm sure that's that's what you all were thinking when you decided to make the decision to arrest this, man. Right. Absolutely. So we operate on probable cause. So we can't make the recipe can't put someone in custody without probable cause. And we did so with a combination of good old-fashioned police work. And when I say that I mean talking to people listening to leads coming through evidence as well as the modern age of DNA technology. So our lab and our friends at folks are some of the amazing people who helped us an assistant us in this investigation. We're talking with Phoenix police chief Jerry Williams about Nathan Sutherland, the arrest of him a man suspected of sexually assaulting and impre. Impregnating incapacitated patient that he has nurse. He was actually caring for it. Hacienda healthcare. Tell me about your first reaction when you heard about this this crime. That's a great question. I I was horrified. Just the mere fact that are victim can't speak for herself. And then when you when you further stretch that out to the fact that an innocent baby who didn't have a say into how he came into this world it was horrifying. Yeah. At the end of the day, though. There is a precious baby that came out all of this, I suppose that some some comfort for the family at least. But wow, I can't imagine what that family has been through. And I know part of what you do with the police department. There is you make sure that the victims and the victims families are cared for. Absolutely. So so I I'm certain most of the listeners out there and yourself of listen to the nine one one call that came from the facility that began this investigation. The crime itself is is horrific. And then you're right. There's an innocent baby. That's out there. That's a member of our community. Also. Yeah, it's pretty common knowledge chief Williams that your resources are stretched thin their this. I know you said this was the highest priority and many of your officers and investigators said this is highest priority of the Phoenix police department, this effect any other cases in the fact that so many resources were focused on this gymnast. That's that. That's an amazing question. What I love about my age. Nsee is a fact that our folks figure out how to make it all work. So we understand and realize the importance of this investigation. We did set up a mini task force where he moved to Texas from one place to focus specifically on this crime. But at the end of the day, our folks still come to work, they still get the job done, and they still take care of business. So I'm really proud of my agency. All right. I'm not trying to stir up controversy here. Because really congratulations are in order forgetting, the sky, and we'll see if there's more arrests in the future. That's chief Williams Jerry Williams of the Phoenix police department. It's seven seventeen here on Ona's morning news. And it's time for a check with commando. I'm not sure we're ready for the newest puppy size robotic dog. I though from Sony. This dog has cameras on its nose entailed? Artificial intelligence and an internet connection so can walk around and report back with everyone in the house.

"Independent in thoughts and punk rock in life. It's the Benson show. Nathan Sutherland, licensed practical nurse has been at the facility since two thousand eleven Phoenix police chief Jerry Williams says the suspect provided care to the victim. And it's one of the shocking cases, she seen in a walk real old fashioned police work talking to people in DNA technology and just literally coming through. Details of information is how we were able to form probable cause. For this arrests. Police say the baby is doing well. And this investigation continues to determine if there are possibly more victims or if any more suspects. Yeah. And if you're not following the story, this is a woman who is she's in a long term care facility, hacienda, healthcare and. People are species in a vegetative state. She is she's definitely in a situation where she cannot make decisions and producer, Phil. I assume it's much like my brother for those of you who are new to the show. My brother has brain damage is a and G tube. So that's how breeds and eats. He can recognize he can't speak can't say a word. He he is laughter and some emotions, but there is no he there's no cognitive ability to make any kind of decisions. And this woman was pregnant. She had a baby. So pregnant, and this scumbag. Got pregnant and nobody knew she was pregnant, and she has the baby. The doctor gave her like a check on them. But it gave her like a full woman's exam in April. Of last year and said that the part that he found that was hard. Could have been from scar tissue and the baby probably would have been in the situation where he could it would just have happened. And so what is happening is because she's on because he has seizures. She's not so much phenobarbital that the baby. I was just chilling as well. So it is it is it is a disgusting situation. The good news is the baby is doing. Well. And then the they gotta start looking around and go, wait a minute here. It just probably is this this woman during the period when we believe this incident occurred sexual assault occurred. We believe that he was the LPN. At least part of the time responsible for her care. Yeah. And you know at the facility now, they they're not letting you know men into rooms by themselves of your nurse or doctor. You have to have somebody with you. It is an awful awful horrible situation. And you know, I mean, it's imagine that just just the thought process of. What kind of vile individual this person is? Just beyond vile. Take advantage of somebody like that. And and I. You don't want to be judgmental when you look at a picture, but. Chad. Yeah. But there was speculation. Was it a family member? Was it somebody who was just there? But we live in the day and age where guess what kids if you're going to? Submit if you're gonna work you're gonna Smith teenage test, and we're gonna ask everybody that we've seen we know has had come in contact. That we would like a sample of your DNA, and guess what? DNA don't lie. This scientists in Phoenix police crime crime laboratory determined the sample obtained from Sutherland matched the baby. Yeah. And it's a shame. It's it's just a horrible. Shame. The baby's doing. Well. But once again, a, you know, you ask yourself as amazing as the world is right. And the world is in credit. There are people out there that are just awful human beings, just awful, horrible human beings. And this is one of those situations where they've got him. Appeared in court. And was that were there were there. Somebody else with him. Was there more victims? And then the question starts to come to is. What's this going to cost? How soon so this place has to declare bankruptcy. Get taken over by somewhere else. Who would want to keep their anybody in a position of of helplessness in a place like that they're going to those questions are going to be asked. And then the other questions is. Where were what's the cameras? We've cameras everywhere. Where's the cameras? Where is the? I mean, just all of these things that you would think. That they would have. Three two three five three eight twenty four twenty three. At Chad Benson show issue or Twitter. You can tweet at us. So we saw the viral video went around the globe in seconds. And then of course, a youngster. And a native American staring at each other one beating the drum one as everybody has a smug Whiteface smiling at him, and it is it is, you know, I it's it's one of those things where you know, the rush to judgment was ridiculous, and Sean Spicer who seems to be making a lot more sense. Now that he's not under the pressure of having to go out and deliver all kinds of insanity at times with the president talked about this entire rush to judgment. If you will on the heels of the BuzzFeed story last week. This is another example of the media, and it's not just a rush to judgment. I've heard that phrase over and over again, it's a Russian condemn Trump and Trump supporters in some ways, he he's right. But I think a lot of what it is is it's it's virtuous signaling. Right. It's I want to be on the right side of something. So I wanna virtue signal because I want to show everybody. How it's. Really got it's gotten ugly over the last several years. And I just remember the insanity of was it the dentist that killed a seesaw the lion and the craziness that went on with that and the threats and all of that stuff. And that's what virtuous signaling really become it became a mainstream thing where you want to show how virtuous you are. So you're going to signal to hey, everybody. Look at me. Look at me now. Trump in in themselves is a divisive character any understands that. And it's it's look we we live in a time that we're so partisan. I I was talking to somebody last night. I said can we even have a president that? Can president? Everybody. I don't think that's true. Because the fact is we're in a situation where if you don't have. Certain beliefs that this tribe over here wants nothing to do with you as a president. They want nothing to do with it. The same can be said on the other side. And then there's the rest of us the exhausted majority. And that's just that's not good. It's tough. You know, you always hear well, you know, I, I'm I'm governor to everyone. I'm the president to UD made voted me, but on the president to everybody. But the thing is nobody wants you on that side. So you could say it all you want. But you're never going to get any credit. And it's it's it's sad that we aren't open minded enough to go. Well, you know, what it is what it is. I go back to the analogy of you know, it's it's it's the airplane. Right. Right. You you may not have voted for that pilot. But that is the pilot we currently find, and you could say, he's not your pilot. But the last time I checked the planes in the air, and he's the one piloting the ship and his whole goal or her whole goal should be to get you to where you're going safely. Don't work out that way. But yeah, there is a rush we it's virtue signaling everybody wants to be on the right side morale, this this is how I feel because a certain group of people out there. Believe that again that that morally there. Hey there discussed their judgment of people is superior and has the moral high ground to stand on which which is not good. And this kid is is feeling then you've got this guy. You know, this Nathan Phillips guy who is you know, he's changed his story like a dozen times. And he's bringing look he was trying to bring awareness to native Americans. I think he's a bad, dude. Right. And then you get the other side. Who is just okay. Let's find out everything we can about this guy to destroy this guy to make our point. That's not a win for anybody. It isn't. It was a horrible situation that people painted a picture of because their whole goal. It's divide because dividing and arguing and fighting as far more interesting than everybody going. Oh, yeah. And moving on. That's the reality of that three two three five three eight twenty four twenty three at Chadbensonshow is your Twitter. You could tweet at us. We're still in the midst of a shutdown, and it doesn't seem to be getting any closer to being unsure the speaker's position.

It's it's been in. This case is a case of not only rock the valley witne Ashton, wink, global and it just rocked everybody. Because of how disturbing it is. You had a young lady who is being correct? Since the said, she was in a vegetative state. I'm just gonna go with that. I know the family came out last week and said that she does have some movement in. She does you know, she she can make some sounds this kind of stuff but in getting into that. Makes it even more difficult. It says it is. And I don't want to be like I said, I don't want to go too far on this whole. But there's some. When you had the idea that she was a basically, the vegetative state new kind of made it easier to take. As. My father's I told you as someone who's who's father went through Alzheimer's and stuff like that, you kind of hope towards the end the way, my father was I was hoping that there was no part of his brain. That was able to register the condition that he was in. Trapped. In his body. The way he was towards the end. And that's what you want to hope for in this kind of situation because it's just it's it's horrible. The fact that she was raped by this individual. And there's nothing she can do about it nothing. She could say about it is horrible. And that is why so many people are playing the tension to this case. Who was speaking this morning at the case was broken. And again, it was fantastic police work. They were on this case from the moment that child was born. Of course, you you've had doctors, I think two more doctors have quit their jobs a sense or were fired from hacienda healthcare because this just went unnoticed. How do you have a patient who's in the state needs daily care, and you don't know she's pregnant? A here is sergeant Tommy Thompson, the scientists in the Phoenix police crime the crime laboratory determined the sample obtained from Sutherland matched the baby. You know? When I first saw the picture of the of Nathan Sutherland. Well is posted everywhere. I actually reach out to a friend today said, you know, what helped me so help me sweat. I'll go into the studio. Some crazy stuff today. To me. Nathan Sutherland is a monster. I don't know what it would take for you to to to..
