"It is presented by our title sponsor Canadian club whisky. We'll have more on this coming up for you, but as we know the final series of the chronicle series, the final release is the 45 year old Canadian club whisky. It's arriving everywhere, including our liquor shelves shortly. We're looking forward to that. And there are just so many different layers. It's a mysterious brew if we can call it that this 45 year old. And I keep reading about it and learning more about it. I can't wait to taste it. It's coming just in the Nick of time two drinks. Because we're getting a little shy on the 44th. Yes, we are, yeah. So I'm looking forward to it. It's delicious and you know I'm new to the whole game and learning about it and from tish and the fine folks at Canadian club, but it is, it is wonderful. If you have the opportunity, you should check it out. You know, we'll get on with this, but I didn't do a very good job of rationing. You know, you joke about the 44. But we had the 43 and we've sampled others, you know, through the good grace was a Canadian club whisky. But we probably should have saved a little, right? I'm very, I'm very discriminating as to who that bottle gets open for. I got it. I got it. If the knuckleheads come over, it doesn't, yeah. Very fair, very fair. Great episode ahead, we've got Nathan McKinnon from the Colorado avalanche who, you know what, I mean, as a hockey fan, you recognize very quickly that this is a superstar talent, right? He just is. But to have the opportunity to talk to Nate, you know, just the three of us talking hockey. He's a bit old school, isn't he? And we enjoy having the alumni on the podcast. Because they're not afraid to tell stories and tell it like it is, and the experiences that they've had. And you know, I think we're going to get a little bit of that from McKinnon because that's just who he is, right? He is just like he plays. He's straight ahead, flies off the cuff a little bit. Thoroughly entertained, listening to him. I love watching him play and the shearing goals is everywhere as a Stanley Cup champion. And really cool to have him on. Really cool. Yeah. It is looking forward to it. Headlines, once again, this season presented by our friends at Boston pizza and full disclosure here to anybody who's checking into the podcast or watching this on YouTube.

We're Still Waiting on That Nathan MacKinnon Extension
"We are kind of living in the afterglow if you will of the Stanley Cup for the Colorado avalanche and Joe sakic sort of retooling a couple things still waiting on the Nathan McKinnon extension, assuming it's just a matter of time right here if they're working on a Mark. Yeah, I would imagine. I mean, there's a lot of work to be done. That one's going to get done. Those ones just take time, right? They time and a little bit of a little bit of caressing. You know, they've got to make sure you do it the right way. But McKenna is going to get one of them contracts like the Joker got. You know, like the big time Superman supermax. Supermax. You get a soup. You ever get a super max contract? I never quite did. So close a few times to just slip through my hands there. Yeah, I mean, Nathan McKinnon. The opposite is super max. That's what I got. So you never got one either. No, no, no, no, I never. I never was in a position to negotiate. Mine was my whole life has been organized begging. I go, can I have more money and they say no. Okay. Thank you. No, but seriously, can I have more? No, okay. I think they're going to say yes to Nathan McKinney. They are. Just a matter of time before we before we get that

"I know it's still comes out every now and then but they how do you rein that in five guys out there on a power play who can just throw it around at will. How do you get the discipline to say. Okay let's take a shot here. Power play for sure a little different than five five and that was maybe our achilles heel and five and five in previous years was always trying to make that extra play. You get a little more leash on power play. Especially when you're you're on the ice with those guys. But i think we've established that chemistry now we've had that same power play group for while and everyone knows where the next play is going to happen. Kuch usually knows to plays us. Maybe wanna play ahead but we all know when you get the puck and coaches hands. Everyone else becomes available and ready and we saw that. I don't think people realize like how amazing he is on the half wall. And i've played with played with mardi saint louis on the half wall and i've get to play with kuch the half wall and to amazing players but i i think kuch could be one of the best all time like on the half wall when he has the puck. It's just it's amazing. And he's more of a playmaker. He's got an amazing shot but he's more of a playmaker and you have point in in the whole who plays that position so well you have killer down. Low plays out position well. Obviously i've been on that side for a long time and hetty up top so it just flows. There's really no. yeah sure. Sometimes we wanna make that extra seem pass sometimes. But that's what keeps the penalty. Kill honest to you. Know if you're just blasting it then you know that seem as never available and sometimes when you try certain plays it's about puck retrievals. That's what the powerplays all about. You know if you can try certain plays but no you're gonna get the puck back and start tearing out the pk. Then those seems become open. So there's little nuances like that that we talk about and you know guys know where each other are going to be if we have a battle if we have a retrieval whereas the puck gonna go neck so you just kind of feed off that and it's a fun group to be part of. I think the last thing we should say is we should send a text to mardi san luis saying that stamkos says he sucks on the half wall compared to ensure of and see where that goes. Yeah think i might get a text after that. No you know. That's the level that that kuchis on him. And marty. I mean and that release like i'll see it sometimes acted heave rollers wrists.

"I don't think there's too many. Think the next generation will be more like that. Yes i think they'll be way more outspoken. And stuff yeah. I definitely think so but for me my personality lake. They might be like that and like the media and stuff like that. But i don't think they'll be doing the same things i did when i i came in the league like they're all delta health and all this stuff now you know what i mean. It's like we okay okay. So what is the best story you can tell us. That won't get us all fired about drew doughty coming in the. You can't believe you did. Oh man well that gold medal stories crazy like being late for the bus. I wasn't late for the bus. Actually the bus left without me. Let's we have to clarify that. And i can have. I'm gonna get the guy that was controlling the buses to to clarify this. Because everyone thinks late but i was not late but that story is absolutely insane socially just tell stories okay. So the bus left without me. I was to ship my gear home. Because i didn't want my luggage because i had to go on the road after the olympics like dallas or something so i was trying to ship stuff. Back to la. I was taking the first bus olympics. Than because i had to ship out this stuff at aside. Take the second bus on the gold medal game and they thought i was on the first bus and the bus. But you couldn't just hop in a cab because you're at the village head to the and there's like so much security everywhere so they give me a shuttle they take me as close as they can to the arena which ends up like hudson bay company like in a mall so i like go to the bottom after like take elevator up in this mall. I end up. Blake walking and then like the lineup to go through. The metal detector is like five hundred people and then i called people like judy. You've got a game like an hour and forty five minutes. what are you doing. And i'm like i please. You guys might like peter's like my whole sure all the way down here and i'm like texting flurry on the team. He was like the third goalie so he wasn't like getting dressed or anything. Like you'll get my guess which is like my underclothes might get that stuff out in the hallway and that same time. The guy that's controlling the buses like trying to help me sneak into because it was his fault that the bus laugh and then so i like get in there dress quickly in the hallway. Just leave my suit and stuff in the hallway and then like walk in and like. I'm not even joking. You like one minute into my walk in there. The coach is meeting begins. Like i got my stalin time. The only people that knew. Mike richards flurry in this bus guided. The only people that knew until mike. Richardson said to say it on. Like a podcast. I didn't even tell my parents or nobody's my mom and like are you kidding injury like you gotta be like yeah. That's a story forever though unbelievable probably because i had no time to think just panicking. That's probably why yeah. Have you thought about what you wanna do. Post career yet thought about it. I don't wanna think about acted like cry. Thinking after retiring but nudge. So hope. I gotta get ninety eight years in my career. I wanna play top forty or yeah tell. My body allows me. I wanna play as long as possible. But the reason i bring it up because one of my kids is played in the doughty invitation which is great awesome tournament a wonderful experience. They still wears his doughty hockey. Invitational with the king's fund. And all that still around the house is out something you want to get involved in minor hockey youth hockey. I think so my leg number. One thing i want to do is like honestly. It's like owner junior team or like work for junior team or something like that. But at the same time i definitely want to. I'll continue to to give back to like the hockey and organiz ation. I grew up playing for. I'll continue to always have that tournament and helping that aspect. I don't know if i necessarily wanna get into coaching young kids. I mean maybe if one of my kids played hockey. I would maybe do it but my dream would definitely probably be on nights or like wellstone that that'd be maitree our last one. The fans would like to hear this. When you first came into the room we were talking. You said you cannot wait to play in front of fans the air. So i think the fans should know how much the mean towards the best I mean when you're at home you know they just driving you to play better. Nothing we score bid goal and you feel goosebumps like we haven't had to goosebumps in a long time without the fans there so and then like nothing better than like getting booed by entire crowd score and just thaw make them all quiet. You know that there's a good feeling. That's a good feeling so No i miss a fan so much so much better playing in front of them. I think that's obvious Fan base is One of the reasons. We're even able to go out there and play because they support us there for us They pay money to come watch us play and they drive the team for sure. Is there one player. You can't wait to play against this year. One player can't wait weights play against. I'm looking forward to playing next ezekie skate with them in the summer Guys play out. She's good and he's like so say skeets and london so i'm looking for. I've never played against him only in pick up hockey so i'm looking forward to did. I don't think i had. But i'm looking for planning.

"Results will take care of themselves a whole year. That's kind of our thing and it still is in the process. That game is so bad but we still wanna not meco amazing shot not and winter tactic seriously. But it's still felt like ooh like shouldn't have won that game and then games three and four. They dominated us and we got hesitant. Our whole thing is being aggressive and and making plays and being confident in the park and no one really wanted. The puck no wanted to make mistakes. Some really hoping. And i actually not hoping i know will learn from that and you know when things get tough. Playoffs teams are going to get games. That we've got to stop the bleeding a little bit quicker than that when you say the process. What's the avalanches process like. How does it work. What do you have to follow it for your team. The i think just whether we win or lose. I think we're good enough that if we play while we were going to win but if we lose playing well we can't get to down on ourselves but i guess it's just you know for us. We like to track all five guys above their five guys. That's a huge thing for us when we do that. Where actually way better offensively. We don't get lazy coming back in zone. We swarm quick and the diesel on. You know play little physical or not the most physical team. We play fast and aggressive. And when we do that where tough team to beat but Like we got on the heels a little bit all credit to vegas. They were great. They were buzzing against us but even in game five up to nothing going into the third period. You know just a couple of mistakes unfortunate mistakes and the tie the game and when it not and then in game six. I think we'd shot them. Forty to twenty or something. It was just too late. You know they had all the momentum on their side. I think and it's too bad. 'cause you know when you really think you can win you know you wanted so bad and and then you don't. It's frustrating because i've been on some tough teams in my career and we don't have even a chance so when you do have a chance you wanna make account and hopefully this year we can. You know it's interesting. You talk about guys not wanting the park and and being hesitant and we've seen teams. Maybe the most obvious. Examples is toronto and game seven against montreal freeze just raise and and there's nothing like you can't train to not freeze like there's nothing you can do other than just go through it and it's a hell and it goes down sideways but is there a part of you and your teammates said just say you know what the only way to get past. That is to just go through it. Yeah i couldn't agree more. I mean it's tough. I mean when you then you are freezing and hesitant because you really want it. you know. that's the thing you don't want to be there for. Do you think you'd be you'd be loose in that situation. But i think you kind of have to go through it and when you start to feel that again you know you remember how to get through it. I guess and that's not by being hesitant. If anything double down on your aggressiveness in your assertiveness You know what i mean. I can't let that feeling take over. You know 'cause. I think hesitating is the worst thing you can do in hockey at such a fast sport and get the puck you can have a negative with your head. You know has to be an assertive. Thought the confident feeling in just easier to say that now in an interview in september. But that's what. I think our whole team and myself need to pick up from from last year but that makes a lot of sense to me. I don't like overly philosophical about this but you know the minute you're sort of thinking too much you can really talk yourself into bad. Decisions is almost as if you turn your brain off and just let all your hockey training your whole life just sort of takeover and i always and i know we laugh. Sometimes when you know you guys are doing to walk off interview and the interviewer ask you like. Hey what happened in that plane. You say. I don't know. I get that because i would imagine as a player. You're not thinking about it. You're just doing it so legitimately you don't know what you just did yet. I think that's why the you have to go born by feelings than thoughts. You know when you're out there you're feeling confident you're feeling aggressive. And that's it and then we've been doing this our whole lives. Just let your instincts over from there. You'll make plays you'll make the right. You have to trust yourself that you'll make the right decision with the parker. The right play by just feeling good and and being confident and being aggressive and our said that word a lot. But i think it's important that we didn't do. I didn't do it. It all in games three four and five or game more games. Three and four. Like i was hesitant. I didn't want to make mistakes. And i remember. Joe i mean joe is like just let go you know. I was trying to be play the perfect game or you know not take any risks or anything and that's not my style either. So it's hard i mean you know you don't. It's a lot to figure out in a short amount of time aside. You get to the playoffs. It's a short window. You know you got a lot of learning to do on the fly so it's challenging last one olympics and the players. Save this. And i'm sure you play a role i heard that sidney crosby and connor mcdavid did some skating together to try some things. Have you skied with anyone or new with the other. Two of them like i wasn't no super line. I was against them. I was against them and wasn't totally fair. I don't know why. They teamed up like that. But i actually was with on a lion with mariner at that same skates and i play with mearns at world championships in two thousand seventeen and Yeah we have some good cam. We have some good came out there. So he's i love playing with martin. He's such a good player. Such a good passer okay. You know monitor. He went through the ringer. Yeah did you give him any advice. Yeah i mean. I said some words. I probably shouldn't say on here to him about it. You know let's give it to me. Why would just like he. I mean we're just like she wasn't like a martyr down like like who who might say anything to anybody but you know from the outside. I just think he just can't care you know you just can't care like i mean it's a hard league and what if they win that. He has six goals in seven games in the next series. You know it's just you know one series. I remember when pittsburgh won the cup. I think it was sixteen or seventeen. Cup like said to assist in seven games against washington. They beat and they beat washington. It's a team sport. You know and said when the cops might that year he didn't score goal against washington so for marins. I mean he's just gotta keep going use of think people forget he was in the first team all star in the nhl this year. So it's not too bad But yeah i. It sucks away. He was ripped now people coming after his family and stuff. It's pretty pathetic. But you know he's gonna bounce back such a positive guy he's a fun guy to be around and looks at a good time and such an amazing player so charles stuff. Lucky to have him. Okay last one from me. I'm going to be totally selfish. Here is one of the best goals. I was ever out of rink to live team..

"Try not. I knew it was gonna work out. I knew going to work out. I think it gets emotional. People say it's business but it's not. It's it's personal. I think you know. But i know joe at the end of the day really wanted to resign. Gabe man. i know gave on to stay. And i knew they figure it out. I think at the end of the day. Joe wasn't letting gave leave and i know gabe didn't wanna leave. But i was definitely supportive of gabe staying. That's for sure was very supportive. He's i mean he's one of our favorite players to watch a spectacular and sneaky. Tough to a lot of people that are are are finding out. How much does he make. What's that they're finding out with their face. Yes i'm sure brayden schenn's think twice now but actually when i enjoy in junior som- because you're a chr guys Really as a rookie. And i'm i'll played his wing or whatever but he's just such a power forward not just for a line but i mean he's the leader of our team as well he just kind of makes everything tick and You know for meco meco kind of has easier time. When games on the icy does a lot of the dirty work goes the net net presence. He's always get hit with pox and getting cross-checked in fron does a lot of stuff. No one wants to do. They make a lot of that too and gives me a lot of room to kinda you know. Play little higher plan the outside a little bit more and chase down. Pucks outweigh no. You're very high standards for yourself. What did you think after this year like. What did you work on the summer. Like do you ever go back and watch the vegas series or anything like that. No i don't need to as more of a mental thing than actual physical thing. I think for us and for me to we got a little hesitant you know. I think we beat them in game two but they dominate us in the second third And i remember thinking like oh like i remember talking on the plane like in our whole thing is the process like be good in the process. Results will take care of themselves a whole year. That's kind of our thing and it still is in the process. That game is so bad but we still wanna not meco.

"Kings when their stanley cups without judy. That's a pretty obvious statement. I don't know that tampa although he can make the point that in the first one in this era they didn't really have steven stamkos but in the second one. Do they win. The stanley cup without steven stamkos and this just winks at the point. About how much is luck. Because of tampa takes drew doughty first overall in two thousand eight to the los angeles kings win those two stanley cups. There's no answer other than this the riddle to play within your head or something to to pass the time to think of the alternative universe or the alternative. Nhl universe. i think is entering. That on this podcast. We had these guys one and two. And i'm always fascinated with the. What if scenarios you know. What if you know alex portraying gelo went number two to los angeles instead of drew doughty or judy went first and potential went. Second and twist yourself up like a pretzel even just thinking about these things but again in the spirit of sort of thought experiments what if these two had flipped in two thousand eight what were the world have looked like i will say this. I understand your point of lock. And i and i do think. Luck is a factor. This is a whole other philosophical conversation. The thing that i liked least about moneyball which i thought was brilliant and really smart stuff was billy being explaining his playoff failures by luck and this is the plaster all luck and i would never downplay that you need lock and i think it's important jeff but now i think it's almost become an excuse. Well we just had bad. Our process was great. We had bad luck. And i think people use that as a crunch yes. Everybody has good luck. Everybody has bad luck somedays. Fortune smiles on us. Sometimes it doesn't. But i think in a lot of ways your process and your effort gets you to where you are and you make your own luck sometimes but sometimes i think that people just use it too much as a crutch and at the end of the day i yes is a team sport and sometimes you're team takes you as opposed to you. Take your team. But when someone says oh we never one because we had bad luck off. I think it's such a crush. Sometimes what do you make. The los angeles kings year drew doughty talks a lot about how rebuild his over. Didn't wanna go through it. That was it and rob blake. Released sped this thing up and now there's no more talk rebuild in los angeles. The pieces are all there. This is a team that's chasing wins and chasing playoffs Not chasing a rebuild. We'll see where you know. Clinton by field ends up in this lineup. We'll see where players i ca- pari kelly of and turcott and kill clegg. End up with this lineup. But as i look at the los angeles. Kings i see. I still see tons of veteran guys whether it's co- petar or doty whether it's brown or the know whether it's i follow or arvidsson. There's still a lot of veteran players on this team. Perhaps more so than you'd expect for a team that just went through a rebuilt. It's pretty obvious what happened there. They said okay. It's enough nathan mackinnon. Now nathan mckinnon's summer. Certainly the end part of it was dominated conversation around an interview that nikita zadora gave about him and how intense and the expectation level that he has both on and off the ice for colorado avalanche players. What did you make of our conversation. The people here in a couple of moments with nathan mackinnon of the avs you know first of all i love mackinnon. I love the way he carries himself. I love his attitude. I would have gone full. He'll and he talks length about it. And i'm sure people have seen some of the quotes and we talk about a with them but my response the whole thing was yeah. I'm demanding because i expect a lot of myself. So what that's what i would have done. I think i is a as i thought about it and he does kind of come around to that way of thinking after a while. I wouldn't have been defensive. I would've simply said yeah. You know. I don't care what you think i'm demanding and if you don't like it too bad because it's kind of his way right. He demands a lot of himself and therefore demands a lot of other people. I'm good with that kind of pushback this whole interview again. He's really thoughtful. He's really good in this interview. He has a lot of good stuff to say. Gruber was another guy. We interviewed and i talked about what another member of the avalanche said that they were so happy. Land scott came back. Because he's the guy who tells mckinnon to stop when he when you choose out the rest of us who who told you that did did say that and even mccain and kind of laughable that and says it's true. I just think to be released successful. You've you've got to be really driven and this guy is really driven. I liked the way he talked about their loss to vegas to that. He doesn't sugar coat. It he he basically said we got out of we were. We lost our identity and he gave vegas credit for taking it away from them. And you know. I got a lot of time for emma. All three of these guys and i think we are very lucky that they were in the moods they were in and they were as reflective as they were. You know i hope the listeners. Enjoy it because i really enjoyed these conversations. I thought that they were very generous. Us and therefore the audience in what they had to say the one thing and will end on this stop and give way to the the first of three and that is with nathan mackinnon. The one thing about mckinnon. That that i find really interesting is that i get the sense strongly in his mind. He's achieved nothing. Yes i mean. He's one of the. He's one of the best players on the planet. Some make the argument at various times. He's the best player on the planet very few if any come close to playing like him. You know i've talked about this guy being like a rhinoceros on skates being able to impose his will both physically from a delicate skill point like he. Has it all like when you go into. What makes you know the perfect hockey player. A lot of those attributes are in nathan mackinnon yet elliott in his mind. He's achieved.

"It's an interesting conversation is interesting on size. It's an interesting thought exercise. 'cause you're you're you're deep. Default has always know. Marty saint louis but then when you really appeal it back and think about it just be stamkos. I wonder if it's gonna ended up being kucherov. Well that's the that's the other one. But that's on the horizon of the of the rate now boy. It's funny because at the end of the interview you ask him about the power play and he talks about how good kucherov is and we joked that he's gonna get a nasty texts from san louis when he hears how much praise is giving kucherov over him. What about headman. There's another one you throw in the mix absolutely and the other thing too is again. We're we're giving away the interview. But we ask about the three peat and he said the first naming mentions is vasilevskiy he goes. We've got a chance because of him. Right yes boy. That's a tough one. I think it's going to be a honestly. I wonder if kucherov headman point. This generation vasilevskiy goes down as the greatest players. Like stamkos definitely in the conversation. He's up there right. Sixty goal season. Neil the other thing too that really stands out for me is how relaxed. He is now right. The three of these guys one of the reasons. I wanted to put them together as they were all good interviews but just how relaxed they were dowdy mckinnon stamkos. You know like. I joked with you in one of the earlier podcasts. About how the players don't hate us yet this year. This tour reminds me alive when i used to cover spring training and baseball. The weather's great everyone's in a good mood ones in shape. Nothing heard second. Wake up. I can get a bad. I'm not in pain. They haven't been asked the same questions forty times yet and these guys were really open about things. That's one of the things people really have noticed about. Stamkos is and he talks about how much he liked. The second win is opposed to the first one again. I don't want to give it away. People can hear his reasons but after they won the first one and he scored that incredible goal coming back from injury. People around the lightning talked about how much weight it took off his shoulders. And the fact that you have a championship next to your name and how much it changes you and but the other thing they talk about and it's something that we talked about after the tampa florida series. Live here as that. The lightning have this reputation as being a genteel bunch of guys when really other teams think there are a bunch of nasty killers and know they get away with murder because everybody thinks they're a bunch of guys. I i really liked this interview. Best lightning ever boy. That's a tough one. That's a really tough one. that's all subjective. Like the way i've always looked at stamkos is and i guess you can make the point. That headman might be this guy to some extent as well. There have been two great eras for the tampa bay. Lightning both eras culminating in stanley cup. Victories and i've always seen stamkos as the link between the two. You know the guy that had his foot in the previous say dynasty because just one stanley cup. But in that era of tampa where they won the stanley cup and this era of tampa where they're winning now multiple stanley cups. That's how i've always seen stamkos. Zia always saw saint louis as sort of the the emotional trigger of that team. You know some lightning fans might say okay. The way he laughed maybe that changes their vote. But i always saw. San louis is kind of that guy. Every team has the emotional heartbeat And i always thought it was him but way to start the interview by making me disparage one of our guests by saying he's not the best lightning ever. Okay then follow it up with disparage drew doughty as running through players because as he pointed out during the interview. That's fuel for him. It's funny you know. This is the one that's going to drop after the martyr one and we talked about you know monir ignoring the world and things like that right now again. Stamkos talks a lot about this too is is what's fuel right and and i do believe there's something to that you have to find. I think in the grind of season. You have to find extra motivation. You know there's going to be days you wake up as you said you're not feeling good. Something hurts you wake up in the morning and you feel like crap. 'cause you're on a long road trip or your three games and four nights and sometimes you have to find that little something extra. That gets you through it right or says okay. That's what's going to drive me today. And i and i think there's a difference between fuel and being consumed by things and you know stamkos dowdy. There's no question that they use this stuff as fuel. I mean doughty. I mean this whole interview. It's it's just. I was listening to it again yesterday as i was preparing to write the blog. And the guys just hilarious. I mean in. He'll get to the story about the gold medal game You know the whole thing. I was listening to this. And i i was i was as the whole interview was going on. I was almost like i. I can't believe some of this stuff and you know great for him. you know. The sport needs collar. The sport needs this kind of thing and doughty is a guy. It's like he steps up to the microphone and he knows i'm here to put on a show and he just delivers but it's like i always say like some people out there. They mistake kindness for weakness. Because you're a nice person. you're soft i. It's almost like because he can be so funny sometimes. They think that he doesn't care. I tell people don't mistake that just because you're outwardly friendly or your outwardly. Kind doesn't mean you can't be cut throat when it matters and doughty is cutthroat when it matters quick little aside from these last few players that we just talked about so these two guys steven stamkos drew doughty. They both go one two in the two thousand eight. Nhl draft and. i.

"Aw to feel like an kevin fiala another huge part of it to feel like it's as their team now and all of that is good and done but you need coca presumptively a part of it because like we said of all these fires i just mentioned he is the most important one you know what they've maybe by our next episode on thursday i'll know more about the research situation from my source. The right now deal in place. So at least there is from wild fans glimmers of hope. Don't give up. Stay positive as i like to say. Emily no use as a positive. And i like to think that we're both optimistic people. We do cynical though. And i think that's why people like us. We have a careful eye on bangs. Yes breaking news. My babs back from a walk we are. I'm praying right now. That does sound effects. I alluded to earlier regarding frankenstein. Monsters on the roof with heavy boots and all of that will stop But right now it's good. You know what. I was looking at it which i founded speaking of rosters and different things. I think i'm going to name a player. I'm gonna play the guessing game with you. I'm going to name a veteran player. And i'm gonna tell you why. This player is a jinx. You have that look on your face for now which people can see and you look a little puzzled and so i like to have that lok seat that look on your face because it when i can make you puzzle because you seem to know everything i throw at you emily. There is a player in the last two postseasons. I that were that was in the stanley cup. Final but ended up being on the losing side. And now this new upcoming season. He is on undo team. And if i was a betting person. I think i'd have to bet against this team. Because this player is now part of it th bat roster doesn't make any sense to you. Is it corey perry. It is corey perry because let us go back in time when he was with the dallas stars although played great unbelievable and i'm a corey perry fan even on the goalie and he's a pain in my front of the net. He was great with dallas stars. We all remember their postseason. How great they were. And how close it came to beating. Tampa did not happen. Perry had a great great postseason. Move on to the montreal canadians. We all know what happened there. The canadians face the tampa bay lightning corey perry again in the middle of it. All and by the way he was the victim of the most blatant non coal in the history of non calls in the post season so he created chaos. But what happened emily. The canadians lost again in the stanley cup. Final and now corey. Perry is a member of the tampa bay. Lightning will he be the reason if they do not repeat. Will we blame corey perry. Oh i think we'll blame them. Losing their entire third line. that's fantastic but had liked. I think that's what all the goal is. The league wanna hear. Yes just just a random observation. That i that i just made. No i love it. And look i think the tampa bay lightning or one of the most fascinating teams. They are the team that are going to be on our network the first game. When we're back you're gonna see your girl and lee caplin Is i'm so excited for that. Game huge but hakkinen julian briefs wa especially. I had a really good conversation with pam right before free agency. He's the gm of that team. And i don't know of any. Gm had a more difficult offseason just in the decisions they had to make because this is someone who built his team exactly the right way. He did it through the draft. He made some sure moves. He emotional connections to so many of these players. Not only did they win. The stanley cup rings but he won with ebony aid shell as well minor league hockey and he basically had to say salary cap. I finally have to say my goodbyes and he did. And there's a lot of players that had to leave. I think he did a really good job in bringing in some interesting pieces like corey perry. It also helps though that when you're the tampa bay lightning and you play into team estate with no taxes. Guys wanna play there when you create the culture that you did guys wanna take less for the opportunity to win. And so you see players like zach bogosian Corey terry. Who's the there's one other. That's on the tip of my talk. Well they got a great backup. Brian elliott now for andrei vasilevskiy. They've picked up. Brian elliott. I one. I was thinking of all of these guys that are additive veteran. Put them in. Maybe you don't rely on them that much in the regular season but once it comes to the postseason they've got experienced Maybe they'll make stanley cup final again. And you're right. Maybe they lose because the court perry remember. I said that. And when you think about the tampa bay lightning obviously automatic favorite right to three peat but there are a couple other teams that we can't ignore that are always in the conversation and of course one of them is the colorado avalanche new disappointment again last year. Another early exit. Many people thought they had it all written. The script was written. The avs were going to win the cup. Last year nathan mackinnon was going to win. Every possible ward known to mankind if not it would have been mika raton and if not been solo grew bauer. Now gruber hours not there. He's a seattle crack in there. Are others coming and going. I cannot wait to share that nathan mackinnon view with that we had with him and he was very honest about his emotions which we weren't used to seeing but we saw them all and i post game interview after the avalanche lost. I love that so much that probably besides the nikitas couture love gucci like celebration and You know new beer commercial sponsorships. I mean i love how real nathan mackinnon was After the just disappointing early exit for the avalanche. So obviously colorado is right back as a top favorite to win the stanley cup. They are but the movement the summer. I mean they got rid of rube our because look they're focused on getting gabriel scott back and i'm glad they did it you yes out that. He's a very important player. He does a lot of things that don't appear on the box score. He's he's a great player for that team But it did cost of grube our and then they take the chance on darcy. Kemper being guy Because they had to who are who went to the seattle crack in ryan. Murray is a player. They brought in that. I think was brian art to bet on He didn't have the best season last year. But if he can get back on track and the right structure and then he can help them out. Did lose a lot as well. You know donskoy. Saad ryan grades. Connor timmons like specially donskoy inside a lot of scoring. That they're saying goodbye to and you know when i look back to them in that series that they lost against the vegas. Golden is firstly unfair. Draw right we. We should have been having not in the stanley cup. Final or at least the western conference final. We shouldn't have had early in the second round secondly about like their center depth with an issue. They just couldn't you know with the vegas golden knights also with physicality i felt like they weren't tough enough now. Those things i just mentioned is one player that both those things. It's nazem kadri. He was during that series. If he can stay literally in the lineup. Just don't get suspended. Nauseam qadri maybe. It's a different story But i'm curious. Those dole things are going to haunt them or we're gonna see You know their gm. Who joe zack has been one of the best jobs in the league. Last couple of years go big game hunting season. Get some help at the trade deadline. Improbably veteran help. And you know the journey that the tampa bay lightning took right. And we'll get into it with a captain steven stamkos in just a few moments right here on this episode of the pries..

"Not a big enough. No compensation. It comes down to what they want to pay him from her salary. So Kevin Adams like we talked about this off season. And what he's got to do. The the ankle trade the Reinhart trade the risk the line and what to do with him. Expansion draft in there is what do you pay? Rasmus Darlene? Yeah. What kind of deal? And You know, it's it's worth mentioning that whether it's your own poker game your fantasy football game. Whatever you you got a guy at the table a guy or gal at the table that you think is new and green. Might make his job really hard. Here. One right. You talk about the agent dealing with Adams, the agent or another GM, right? I mean, we we talk about the idea that GM is want to be friends. Do they do? They want to be friends with him. Do they care or they think like new money at the table. Let's get him. Yeah, And I think I'm not trying to like, be little atoms. I'm trying to think of it, like other G M's. Would another GM If I'm you know, I want to. I want to offer sheets. I don't wanna do it to Steve Eyes German because I want I want Steve, a German to like me. Kevin Adams, Mhm. Maybe I'll go after his guy. Right. Kevin Lowe came after Darcy Regier. And who was it? Paul Holmgren. He signed Mike Weber to an offer sheet. How about Marc Bergevin? Signed Sebastian. I hope to an offer sheet It got matched, But here's a guy in the Stanley Cup final. The Canadians try to get Sebastian at home. Yeah, I think also you you know, if you got to the point, you also have to factor and there's a little bit of a different discussion here on the team That's getting the offer sheet like If you did it to Tampa, right? That would have been great. Um, the Sabres assuming they trade Eichel and Reinhardt doesn't get a next contract here. We're not going to have a ton of big commitment. Skinner's on the books. Post has got what two years left to three years left and then oppose a was going to be off the books. They don't So as opposed to Colorado. Okay, you're right. Colorado has cap space. Um according to cap friendly. 25 million in cap space, but group hours unrestricted Landeskog is unrestricted. Brandon Saad, I believe is going to be unrestricted and a year from now they can begin extension talks with Nathan MacKinnon, who's incredibly underpaid. So if you give him a car, $10 million, and by the way, PR LeBron is reporting of any is saying, if anybody offers sheets my car the after just going to match it. But if you're giving him that case, you've got to make that. Hold on. McKinnon with Landeskog re signing group our You re signing brand inside sabers. Don't have that problem right now. Just just a public service announcement of the rest of the NHL. Okay? Cale Makar 12 year. I would assume they would still match it. They're going to match it. So I'm gonna be like grubauer because I'm in a competitive league. I'm going to push their cap. Yeah, you should. Well, but nobody did it to Tampa. So no one's gonna do it right. But then, and if you're Colorado, I assume you say Hey, Thank you, Philipp Grubauer, we love you. Goodbye. Uh And I assume you do everything in her power to keep you have my car. You would extend McKinnon a year from now and keep Landeskog and there are, you know, maybe sat maybe Brandon sidewalks. But I would assume they would match Kalma car at whatever the price is one thing John Text in with one quick correction on this that I always forget. So the compensation package. Is divided by five years. If you sign for over five years. Yeah, so the two first the 2nd and 3rd is done over a five year that no, no, no, That's not the part we're talking about. So if you sign eight years 8,000,007 years, that's a $56 million contract right. The cap hit is eight million. But when figuring out the compensation package any offer sheet over five years is divisible by five years. So then it becomes 56 million divided by 50. Okay, Thank you, John. Hire someone that's so obsessive offer sheets. I do forget that sometimes so That does drive the compensation up a little bit higher than the cap hit, actually is. Yeah, the cap it is. Okay. I got you. Yeah, So thank you for that. That's one thing that stops. Or shouldn't say stops but limits those offer sheets but again like Montreal try to get a whole And they chickened out. They went a first, a second and a third should have tried for two. First to 2nd and 3rd. You've got to make it enough that the actual the GM of the team that's receiving the offer sheet actually has to Pause and think about it. Well, don't forget 1st 2nd and 3rd doesn't change anything. I don't think it's a enough of a behalf for GM to go. I got I'm nuts, guys. Well, let's take the compensation. That's it's just too much. They would never do that for one or two and a three. Yeah, and when this happened last year You know? They're supposed to be. The GMS are going to be mad at you. When I ho got offer Shooted. It was wild. Carolina is going to be mad. And then Carolina thanked Montreal for doing it. So which is it? Are you mad? Are you happy? You know We'll see about my car. But if if If Darlene got hit with one boy, the Sabres would have way of seven days. I think it's a conversations about that, and how do they want to be perceived? Former number one overall pick. Generational defenseman. Yeah, right here for three years and then gone. I mean, wouldn't don Granado probably have Oh, ho, we what? No, he's staying right? You're really making for fun off season I was just coming to grips with Ryan Harden Eichel leaving. Thank you for throwing 1, 17 1st round 1st and 2nd round picks going to have a lot of cap space. Do you think that that contract for Darlene is just so tricky? Yeah. What to do Well, according to cap friendly, the projected cap space for the Sabres is $34 million. Show is cap friendly fit. The Spotrac do projected contract values for hockey players the way they do football players. I will check in the break because I do not know the answer. When we get back, we're taking two calls at 80305. 50 will also do a little fantasy football prep for you actually got in touch with our good friend Scott Pitkowski from Yahoo! Sports. We're going to check in with him. Has been some fantasy football articles about Josh Allen. And could he have a regression statistically and be maybe an issue with fantasy football players this coming season? We'll get into that In a moment, Let's do another code words even give $1000 it.

"Winning the Norris Trophy, but he certainly has a case. I think his improvement Especially on the defensive end has been Pretty impressive. For still how young he is. We sometimes forget how young Kalma cars As far as Nathan MacKinnon goes. Lining up the Stats. That voters will take into account. Points. Let's start with goals build up the drama goals. Austin Matthews was number one. Connor McDavid's was number two. Nathan MacKinnon way down on the list. Okay, because He gave up so many opportunities to Mikko Rantanen this year. That was part of the reason why his goal numbers were not as high assist wise. Nathan MacKinnon was the top five. Was top five in the NHL. Connor McDavid's was number one. And Austin Matthews was way down on the list. Awesome. Matthews does not set up his teammates. He expects them to set him up. So As it comes out in the wash. For total points this year. Carmack David number one in the NHL. Austin Matthews tied for fourth. And Nathan MacKinnon eighth. Nathan MacKinnon. Is arguably the best player on the planet. Now I know that's tough to say that after the last couple of games, but he is Right? He is also the best player on the best team in hockey. The president's trophy winning Colorado Avalanche Nathan McKinnon is their best player. That is why he is on this list. I don't think He puts up a strong enough. Statistical case. This is not one of his better. Regular seasons. In terms of where he ranks in the NHL. Just not It's pretty good. Lot of guys would take one of Nathan McKinnon's worst seasons as their best season. But I don't think it's his what he has going for him his best player on best team. That's the argument for Nathan MacKinnon Best player on best team. Statistically. Its economic Connor McDavid's Right and consumer David Even though you know, last year Leon dry Seidel. The argument against him was he wasn't even the best player on his own team. Uh, Connor McDavid's is the best player on that team, and he had an unbelievable statistical season. And Edmonton made the playoffs. I think Connor McDavid's Is your heart trophy winner and I don't know that it will be especially close. And with Austin Matthews, it was the look at what he did for one of the NHL premier franchises. Right, Anyone The rocket Rashard, so That's why they're on there. You look back to 2017 where I think that Nathan MacKinnon rightly deserve the Hart Trophy and was robbed by Taylor Hall, whose real What he had on Nathan MacKinnon was that his team Picked up more points in a weaker conference and he played in the tri State area. And I will go to my grave saying that's why Taylor Hall when the M V P back in 2017 Nathan MacKinnon was better, statistically in every category. Every single category he was better than Taylor Hall. Still, statistically, he was the better player. Would argue 95 points in the Western Conference are more valuable than 97 in the East. But you look at this year. I just don't think Nathan MacKinnon has quite the argument that he did back in 2017. I'd love to see him win it. The guy deserves one. Right. Maybe this year is not his best statistical year, And it's a bad year when Connor McDavid's scores what he scored this year like 250 points. The guy was unbelievable. Nathan MacKinnon. Deserves a Hart trophy, but he was probably more deserving in years past than he is this year. But we'll see. I mean, I think that Again. Philipp Grubauer is the as best chance, and I think That's that's the hill. I'm willing to die on. Philipp Grubauer being the Vezina Trophy winner is the hell I'm willing to die on with Nathan MacKinnon. And with Kale, my car I could make a case. There certainly deserving of being finalists. But I think that there is Someone in the field that is probably more deserving than they are. Who knows? Maybe this year, Nathan MacKinnon will get one because the voters will look and say, Oh, my God, How does he not have a hard trophy?.

"We've seen a lot of Presidents Cup winners best team in the league through the regular season and then lose in the first round of the playoffs, doing eight C but let's put it this way. A lot of pieces seemingly are in place for the ABS to make a really deep run. I think you're very right. I think this is one of those seasons with the high expectations if they don't at least make the conference finals. I think it's going to be a disappointing season here in Colorado, and to be honest with you, they probably shouldn't least make the Stanley Cup finals because that's hi how high the expectations are off this team and they've got to bonified superstars on this team and Nathan MacKinnon and kill my car. And I would also say that I agree with you, but they have to stay healthy. They did not stay healthy last year and and even with the delay, and then the season sort of finishing in the bubble. It's just it never quite came together because of the injuries. No, there's no doubt about that. I mean, any time you have a big injury, I mean, let's put it this way. Just look at the chief's. If they don't have Patrick Mahomes this weekend, they're not beating Buffalo, their averages Best and Colorado. It was just one injury after another last year, and they gave a valiant effort. And I think everybody was still upset that they lost to the Dallas Stars because they certainly gave that game away in Game seven. What are they up by one with what? 34 minutes together, and Dallas got it tied and then wound up winning it, So I think even then there's still disappointed, but I think if they are healthy There's no reason why they do not least at least make the conference finals and should very well make the Stanley Cup finals because I think they are that talented of the hockey team. I would agree. I would totally agree. 3 47. We've got to get back to John Morrissey as we check traffic.

Mark is jordan as we know i don't like bennington But he didn't play terrible last season If he can continue that i mean. I think that this is a deep team. I think they're just as hard to play against as vegas and again. I think that this is a team that can wear vegas down a hundred percent. I think that this team can break vegas. It's going gonna be exciting This team so i can. I like your high hopes. And i can almost agree with them. This division is going to be one of the morrison top. Yeah i think it's between the west division in the canadian division. That are the most exciting. You're gonna tell me that. I'm wrong the canadians. Those are the top. Then i would put the west.
