"They disagree with in order to accomplish common goals especially when those common goals are the protection of ostracize and oppressed groups like religious minorities including him at the time and us as atheists. Yeah interestingly enough. So i had heard of roger williams but i didn't know about his history specifically So i lived in rhode island for like five years Recently went to college there and spent a few years thereafter Bend the roger williams park like a time so it's kind of funny to read the story and be like oh shit no way. This is bat roger williams. I was aware that rhode island was kind of treated as like a defacto like timeout. Playpen for a the the bodies from massachusetts. While but i didn't realize that roger williams was such a prominent figure in history And i think it's really interesting because kind of like you both rizaigat. We just recently touched on how lake there are cubists. Try to reach across the aisle and unite you know all religions and beliefs towards some common goals and that gave me some sort of pushback but one thing that would make me feel very secure about working had hand with a religious person. Is someone who would go so far with their beliefs as to be you know pushed out of a colony that they had you know a moved across in ocean to be at a to be so passionate about the belief that religious liberty is involve separating religion in government. I he had a senior position. Yeah for shabby it. I think it's hard to conceptualize. Sometimes because we live in a time where most religious people that we see our very entrenched in some sort of archaic beliefs that are either harmful to like a group of people and kind of clashes with the values of secular people in our society. It it's hard to wrap my head around someone who is so staunchly for the separation that is also themselves religious but definitely contrasting my feelings about the last article like i feel like this kind of person and this kind of story. It gives me like a lot of hope. Or you're the future that we have As a as a pluralistic society. And you know as the internet's like uniting lots of different cultures like a a global pluralist society that there are some common goals that we can be ground us in while. We're moving forward in that lake. Separating like you can have your beliefs and worship and do what you need to in your private in your private life and like with your family and friends or whatever. But it's it's worth that crosses over into impacting legislation. And how. I'm able to live my life where those things start to become a problem and roger seem to see what it's the same cautionary tale that we hear a lot between the left and the right..

"Not just a big up sanctuary. Which is i like to do what. Also because they're to highlight that This kind of stuff was going on. All throughout the caribbean It was an an estates and in brazil and in cuba everywhere. They're everywhere there. Were people there. Were these revolts. There were these rebellions. in columbia. Same thing There are In saint john in seventeen thirty three. This thing called the saint. John's rebellion before this is ninety something years before sixty to ninety years before independence in in sentiment. Which was now haiti. was a rebellion in saint john. In seventeen seventy three that resulted in that population of enslaved africans holding saint john for six months now It did not result in an independent nation but it was a a essentially a a successful run of essentially running out The plantation class and the slay. People saying we're we're we're bolting. We're not going to to live like this. And they held island for six months so much history around all of this stuff and in haiti in specific there were all sorts of negotiations going back and forth between france. They were three commissions tri-color commission. There were all kinds of characters. Along the way you'll you'll probably read about tucson over chore. And he certainly a kiki figure in this narrative but there were also a lot of other key figures. There are a lot of dynamics. between colors and cast systems and social hierarchies between blacks who worked from africa versus the blacks who were born in santa main versus the people distinction to yeah and and all of those people who had been fathered from white people who were now free black people yes those would be called and there were This the apartheid in such the politics of apartheid and the politics of racial categories. How how does that work in in creating a movement for for liberation. Also when you have to to be mindful of these economic concerns. How are we if we become independent. We still need to produce something. People still want to work. People still need to eat. You know we need to be able to trade. How are we going to do that. And so all of these things were super super dense it's the complication of revolution. Where it's not just as simple as like turning a switch and things go from bad to good and we do need to. We do need to move on to the next articles. Just kinda keep us on time not to be that person or any button. Article article is phenomenal. It's a really quick very easy. Read but you'll learn a lot. And i know you had some really good notes about it so i'm gonna give you a closing statements on this one I especially like what you said about the yellow fever epidemic. Just what they were really up again. The one thing. That stuck out to me when i was reading the article and sort of learning a little bit more about The haitian revolution was that how a pandemic played a part in late. A big part and he indifference of those in power until it was too late. And then i'm thinking back to people like Tucker carlson and all these right wing pundits putting out all this anti vaccine nonsense but at the same time they're vaccinated you know their vats. Just you know people empower those sorts of people in power. Don't really have to care right. They don't they don't wanna do anything about climate change..

"Today i am your conductor. Laura mcgee from skeptic. Hang out. And i have with me today to incredibly awesome guests. I'm so let's start with road. Tell me a little about yourself laura. Thank you so much for having me. I am the washington dc area. I am a artist writer. musician and i'm the director of black numbers of dc. I some that is really cool and you actually one of the articles that we are going to be reading today. So thank you for that. Yeah we'll we'll get to that one and just a little bit sue. Yeah nate tell me a little about yourself as well. Hey laura. I am a host of secular sexuality on thursdays at seven o'clock central tune invokes and this is now my third time count one two three times on the nonprofits twice in a row. So i'm calling out a win and afghanistan first time being on the show with laura ambro. So i'm so excited red-letter day for me. This is amazing. You know what's really cool about the three of us as we all do. Such different stuff in different content but We all have something really unique. An awesome to offer to the The atheist activists seen so. This is really exciting. I can't wait to see how our voices all kind of intermix today So with that being said let's just get straight into the first article nate. Why don't you go ahead and give us a rundown yes. I would absolutely love to because the catholic church just seems to have no shortage of bad. Press these days a this. This article comes to us from the christian post and basically is detailing the predicament of one. Lynn starkey who sued the roman catholic archdiocese of indianapolis for guess. What firing her. Because they found out she was gay and more specific as she was married to another woman. Well that's now that's going to be there. Cop-out right is that no no. It wasn't because she's because she's gay. It's because she's in a same sex marriage was dressed. Yeah yes we don't we don't hate gay people know. We love the sinner. We take the sin that's against our policy rame Absolutely makes sense woman. Who's worked there since nineteen seventy nine. Oh my gosh. i didn't bet up. Wrote born in seventy eight was born in many many years. You are old. Yeah that's ridiculous. Yeah and then all of a sudden find out that she is in a same sex relationship and none of that makes everything worse that i don't. I don't know why i miss that. In in my skimming the article. Because i thought that she was some twenty eight year old teacher you know she's kind of like popped into town and got a teaching job and no she's been there like our entire lives. She's a part of the church community. She has served. she has taught. She has contributed. She has value until she was married. So it's interesting that you say that because on the one hand i absolutely think it wouldn't make a difference whether you've worked there like one day or what you work for a decade or two decades to That sort of treatment isn't okay but on the same hand like what you were saying They talk in the article about all this stuff that she contributed In in terms of the her guidance counseling and and her her contributions to the the issue on the children and to the congregation right all of her volunteer work so she was a very active contributing member to this organization. That's battle yeah that to me. really struck me as it's almost. It's not good either way but it's almost like adding insult to injury or just pouring lemon juice on the wound. I think that's a betrayal. I i do. You wanna go first. Because i had kind of put some thoughts together. So you know. I don't want to step on anyone's toes..

"China shares art. And then. When i actually start like my the upper portion and they'd be like you're excommunicated. I'm like whatever. I'm the. Yes yes promised that i get to be a bishop or a cardinal carbon yes i i hereby dub the nate. Smith's cardinal of the queen. Cynthia charge of nonbelievers dubbed the dub dub dub dub dub dub sti- blah. You are now. The minister of all things. Clean cynthia touch like adjacent because i have dubbed the here so forth so with groundhog's etc etc etc. You expect a wheel. Supreme executive just loves moist. Our best friends until right now. We just politically aware peasant. I'm sorry to the viewers at home because the three of us are just going to sit here and watch monty python for the rest of the pretty much. This is bass exactly what's going to happen because no one expects the spanish bring in. Bring go over here okay. Commodore artists here. This nice nice. I love it. So what final thoughts on this particular excommunication piece okay. So i did actually have a thing because i am a great big history nerd. Yep okay so because this like the article were referencing is more of a source piece than an opinion piece. I think it's really interesting to pay attention to the way that our political environment works now. And it's intermingling with religiosity sort of parallels that of the tudor dynasty and of excommunication in general because you did have henry the eighth who formed the anglican church. He was the original reformist depending on who he asked but like he was the guy that was like nope. We're dumb catholocism. It's not even the same thing anymore right But then right after him you have this surge of his children and one cousin that completely changed the landscape like every five years little while so you had him. And then you had edward the six his son who died in fifteen but he was king for nine years and he was a protestant reformer and he hated his sister mary and so he came up on his death bed with a legal way to give the crown to a protestant cousin who reigned for nine days. Lady jane grey and all she wanted was just to do her dog. She was the sweetest little girl ever. She was like seventeen years old. I think maybe a little bit older but he did it for nine days. Then we came back and all of a sudden yet bloody mary the first who said about this catholic reformation of after they were all like you just told us the other thing and then you have right and then you have elizabeth was like. I don't care just planning to be strong. So it's sort of this quick interplay of having the right beliefs that shouldn't have anything to do with running the country all of a sudden dictate where you stand in a way that you could lose your home or your life but if you had waited one year to say what you said you would have been like the cream of the crop right now. We're dealing with the same thing. When we deal with our political parties because the two parties in our country at least one has become distinctly a religious and one has become distinctly religious in terms of the major voting blocks. And the way you are shown to those people will change the way they think about you regardless of public policy which i think ties back into a lot of the other things that we've talked about so i think that like learning from this history understanding not just the religious impact of excommunication but the political impact of it does a lot to show us. Why certain people emphasize the things they do. And what some of these think pieces we've read today are trying to say And in an even going back to what you Previous mention rags concerning about like you know how the two parties system specifically in the united states has become like either a religious or religious right and we know. Are you know elephants and asses right so when it comes to Even how your leaning specifically religiously oftentimes definitely affects like ideologies concerning your politics. You know me like even that was like the whole portion of wide these catholic bishops came together to To to take away communion from biden specifically because he is a he is pro choice right. He believes in broke abortion rights driver. And and catholics is like no. We don't like that so we're gonna use like are flex our muscles to say no. You can't do it right. Same thing happened at this. Particular time. Period henry haith. He flexed his muscles. Because he didn't particularly care for hampshire that he got from polk commit so he said i'm out and hopefully they'll say well. You're excommunicated Even when you brought up in historically his daughter elizabeth i. She was also excommunicated. Project communicated to at one point the to learn it's not working right. The regular regular addict celsius was the order that excommunicated both of them Yeah and and elizabeth like. I just wanted to strong. Go back to the church of england because i said yep. I'm red had secret. Another another example of of excommunication not working Napoleon was actually s. communicated as well for occupying rome and his response was to kidnap the pope and parading around his empire showing him off forcing him to see people powers. I mean if if that's not the best argument for authoritarianism. I i've yet to hear another one So just disclaimer. Authoritarianism is bad. The views of the guests do not reflect. That of the aca and nate smith will not be returning to the nonprofits just like did i just read that out. Loud cynthia's part. yeah..

"I let iraq all right well when this particular show airs on july the eleven this is also the day that pope clement. The i was counting ex communicates henry. Six seven eighth in fifteen thirty three. The doctrine of excommunication is where we're going to be exploring today. And i'll give a little read to this so it was on this date january the eleventh fifteen thirty three that pope clement the seventh pope from fifteen twenty three fifteen. Thirty four excommunicated king. England's king lenglen kanga england henry the eighth from fifteen. He was king between eighteen nine to fifteen forty seven now by henry time the cutting tool of excommunication had lost some of its edge. Of course any group that has the right to expel a member. But the catholic doctrine then leaves no recourse for avoiding internal external eternal internal eternal damnation. All all the above and then this. This article exposes a little bit. What exactly is excommunication for those heathens to. Who don't what it is will let me tell you. Excommunication in the roman catholicism according to the catholic encyclopedia excommunication from the latin x out of an communion communion communion literally means exclusion from the commute communion. John wick excommunicated three-million. You've got you ladies with tattoos. Typing contracts the modern version of excommunication. Now that was the most serious penalty that the church can could inflict. Excommunication deprives the guilty christian of all participation in the common blessings of ecclesiastical society and requires of the society to shun the excommunicated for his or her obstinate disobedience clutching imaginary portals right. I'm just gonna clutch my necklace. Because it's not pearly but yes for what are you guys thoughts on this. Oh my goodness excommunicating henry. The nate please please. Can i just point out. How absolutely ridiculous. That is that the church still uses excommunication as as a tool of intimidation they actually intimidated one. Perron the dictator of argentina for expelling to catholic bishops that he suspected were publicizing rumors of his affair with an underage girl. They excommunicated him for that. The catholic church over sex with a minor. How dare you to know about the catholic church in their level of bullshit o'clock crecy. I think it was even interesting. Why remember the catholic church actually excommunicated henry the eighth so like So we knew that henry. The eighth married his first wife who was the Was the widow of his brother. Who died right. And so she became queen but she had to was a two girls was a two or three two girls right. I think it was two and She didn't have a son but his mistress and berlin said acting. Give you a boy. He's like soir and he's like she she's like. Oh yeah boys are me. I can give you one. He's like okay and this goes to pope and was like yo pope. This is exactly what happened. The bible according to cynthia ed. Hey gimme an annulment from this chick right here. Because she ain't you know boys. And i need boys so i can go ahead and pass all my seed and macron's so i need an answer that she can do it so i need annulment and and gave you a special difference dispensation for the first wife Who was married about. I do and again and king was like the phone. He's like nah. I'm not doing it. And he's like she what. Guess what. I'm john and then agrees who was like you know what we filipo comment either. Why word dry. So he said you know what bucket we just about to start our own church charge angle. Anglican banks is the breast. This is the best recaps of the birth of the anglican shirts. I've ever not command video of this audio. We have my but keep in did con- professors no. No pokemon commit was like fuck fuck. Know what excommunicated you go sign and hearing abel's like fuck. You already got my day or church. I the wow. That is way better than the last story. i heard i have as a great big history nerd. I can't tell you how much i love your recitation dynasty. And i said no being a former anglican episcopal bastard child of the anglican euro a lay eucharistic minister with angle church faggots. She can deliver communion and last rites and a couple of other things indeed. I was even thinking about getting a caller on the anglican church for ships and goods thinking about still doing it. Just just you serve as well you should and then when they kick you out you can start your own church like another person. That got excommunicated. Mr martin luther right exactly you are two. You could be like the new story of the week like this lady. Priest thinks she's going to change stuff. Change.

The amount of infrastructure water plants that it's going to require to actually do this. How realistic do you think that is in. His response was so brilliant and shown a light on on on why that question is wrong. He in what he said was. Would you be asking this question if it was toronto. Didn't have clean water. Would you be asking me this if it was vancouver or if it was saint john would this even be an issue of. How much does it cost. No of course it wouldn't because we're one of the most wealthy nations in the world. If there's a problem in we really want to solve it we can do it. And that just was so brilliant that it was such a succinct answer to this question. It was supposed to be a data. Oh hey i can even one up with that. How about how we pay for everything else. How do you pay for everything else. Like you have a budget right and you have an in your particular budget you allocate funds to pay for things that you want to fucking pay for your wearing more than two more innocent so i could say fucks good. Yeah you're good. Know i i usually open for everyone. The fox are now open. So here's the thing you you. That's that's what you're budgets are for you actually allocate funds in order for you to pay for things that you you d necessary to pay for infrastructure for these particular reservations because there are yours citizens to they are your residents to should be a thing and catholic. Church does come off the damn money. You got it. You are the largest land owner in the world and you have your own country. You really do. You have your own country you really do and if you wanna lead in fuck right there rags israel you have your own fucking country there you go so also but this is a place like in the larger picture where we can look at what we do to indigenous people as a microcosm of how we handle any minority how we handle the poor how we handle people of color how we handle people from marginalized communities but flint just got clean drinking water last year. Mark cueto bradshaw that ran for senate and twenty twenty grew up outside of nuclear waste and became an environmental activist. Because it the way that we handle anybody that doesn't have enough power to sway a vote in the free world is atrocious and i think that looking at indigenous peoples is a really convenient way of looking at that because it's very easy to define. They've got physical borders. But when when you take that and then you overlay on all these other communities. You're like We're kinda doing wrong by everybody. Ha lay it says it's a it but that's not to take away from the struggles of indigenous people. Because holy crap the water protectors getting mason stuff. You holy. what are we doing. And and when we have these huge entities like the church that are actively harming and not actively repairing harm at. What point do we push back at. What point is it socially acceptable to push back. That part. that part went went win. That got now now. Writers actually mayor in canada. Who is a mayor of a small indigenous town in nunavut do has called for churches to be forced to pay taxes like the rest of us on their land. The churches receive a tax exemption on On property tax and this this particular mayor. It's a small town It's probably not gonna go anywhere. But he was brave enough to go on and this was newsworthy. Because somebody's like what what what tax churches will. What did you actually say. That in your an elected official. He's like yes and he said in his interview. He's like yes. I am a white mayor of a predominantly inuit community and these people elected me and this is discussed. It disgusts me. And these people this organization this church needs to pay. Now is the time so i think i hope i'm i hope to see some progress here now. I do too Because like before. And would you be asking me this if it was vancouver or if it was saint john would this even be an issue. Of how much does it cost. You know i. I usually open for everyone. Because holy crap the water protectors getting mason stuff you holy. What are we doing in when we have. These huge entities like the church that are actively harming and not actively repairing harm. At what point do we push back. At what point is it socially acceptable to push back. That part that part went went win. Is that got now now. And these people this organization this church.

"Raising of twenty five million dollars ended up spending twenty eight point five million dollars on a new cathedral and they only race thirty four thousand six hundred fifty dollars for the survival. the survivors. I'm sorry. you know this is exactly what dr king said. He said there rioting. Like when i look at these church the facings you said. The writing is the language of the unheard and often times. If you're seeing. I remember it was like one photograph of of I've i believe that the had like red paint on it and it said you know children were here or we were children. We were sort of. Yes thank you. We will trend and and this is exactly what. Here's the thing Often times there is never action when people are are just Highest or and or just say oh. Please help us. Oftentimes radical things have to happen in order for radical changes to you know transpire even though like i don't I don't condone or support. You know defacing any property or down or anything of that nature but you know like like. You mentioned nate in rags. I don't understand it. I get it. I empathize with it. You know. I hear the message. Indeed indeed and something else that is often touched on. Is how the catholic church went about escaping their commitment to paying this twenty five million dollars they sought a secret arbitration with the judge to exploit the best efforts in air quotes clause of the truth and reconciliation commit commission and basically said well. We tried our best. Nobody's giving us twenty five million dollars so I guess you guys are out of luck and then after they got this judgment that you know well. I guess you try your best. A they then waited months to announce it and further to cynthia was saying the next year a cathedral in toronto completed a one hundred and twenty eight million dollar renovation. Wow absolutely dwarfing. What they promised to do for for for for the victims of crimes is our cathedral in toronto. A major metropolitan area that could have handled the renovations themselves on their. It doesn't get more metro than that in canada. Come on i know. My aunt lived in toronto. I was like wow this beautiful. But but you know i Takes me back to our previous segment talking about like you know. News coverage of negative aspects concerning religion. I mean when you have egregious acts being committed and then when you're found out about it and you're not making proper steps in order to rectify it. What do you want the media to do right. Yeah the answer is shut up. Cynthia l. u. exactly honest your persecuting us right. Oh yes the archbishop of the winnipeg diocese has raised the ire of of some folks by saying in a livestream service that the catholic church is receiving a persecution persecution. Going on here. He says his words not mine. The level of privilege that it must take think you were being persecuted for the murder rape abuse neglect of hundreds of thousands of children. I it. I can't like. I i wanna fall out of my chair in your silken cloth of gold india. Right that part. That part that you've gotten from raping other cultures and colonization just saying but here's the thing i could say so much but this even going back to their persecution point reich i just it baffles my brain for constantly again. These particular atrocities are being highlighted specifically by the catholic church even though they're not alone in this religious The i'm bumpy. The beat the hell out of you and you can believe type thing but But like they it seems like the not seems they do not really ever take a ability for their role in in really being adversely affecting people's lives. I mean they don't take it. They don't take accountability for. Hey this is an institution murdered people. This is an institution that turned a blind eye to a pedophilia. This is an institution that you know. That turned a blind eye to nuns. Abi raped by priests and their children being taken away from them either killed or put into adoption and they never seen them again. I mean it's a thing over and over and over again and it's kinda like this whole conversation about what. Why are people leaving a church. Hell exhibit a. B. c. d. Emt what the hell. Yeah you have to. You have to be willfully ignorant to not see why people are leaving the catholic church and for the record. There were other churches. It wasn't just the catholic church that that was involved with this. There were other churches. The anglican church. Cynthia which i know is near and dear to your heart out there. Hey every other denomination has paid what they promised to pay years ago years deck like over a decade ago the presbyterians the anglicans they have admitted their wrongdoing and they have paid and they are not in the news so whatever negative coverage the catholic church is getting they. They absolutely deserve and one thing. I wanted to bring up. Because i feel like this doesn't get a lot of coverage In in canadian media. And i'm certain that doesn't get a lot of coverage in american media but Folks folks seem to think that canada is this a waste of liberal thinking And it really isn't like our government is absolutely just paying lip service to their commitment to first nations peoples Are prime minister. Justin trudeau mr model justin trudeau a promised during his election campaign in twenty fifteen that he would bring clean drinking water to reservations across canada. At that time there were a hundred and five drinking water advisories in native lands across canada. That hundred five that just includes the will boil the water advisories. That had been in place for over a year book. It doesn't include any others right Just fast forward now. To december of twenty twenty where now Halfway into trudeau second term and they announced that they are not going to be able to reach their deadline and they are not going to provide details on On an update as to as to whether as to when we think we might be able to fix this issue for these people. So it's not like you know it's not like this is a priority. Because they're you know they're they're not rich in white. So why why would it matter and one of that lake. I think to kind of underscore that like.

"Know these people need. These faces degree a great response. The i heard from a first nations chief was don't burn these places down because their crime scenes that is a great reason not to burn them down and i thought that was i was like at this guy's got it figured out that is absolutely Clever but there has been updates There's been more goings on since this article was was published. It's a it's a. It's an active ongoing thing This this past week One hundred and eighty two more unmarked graves were found in the tuna nation. Cranbrook breezy which is only a few few hours away for me in british columbia so we are officially into the thousands and this is. This is three schools of the hundred and fifty so residential schools in canada. This is we're only at three and we're already into the thousands like it's unfathomable. I mean can you even think about like an especially as this particular story develops in especially like you mentioned that we're talking about three schools so far and it was over one hundred and fifty residential schools. I mean i don't think it's so far fetched to actually. You know think that they're going to find more absolutely they will. I was. I was looking into this. And i'm wondering like have there been any places. They've looked that they haven't found it. Or are we truly batting thousand. Who that's a good question bray. That's a really good question to ask. And had the government actually fulfilled its promises in the truth and reconciliation commission. That was you know. Two thousand five sixteen years ago in had we actually search some of these grounds. We might have a good answer for that. But the fact is that the Like the kamloops Bodies that were discovered it wasn't the government that paid for that it was the tribe. It was it was. It was the native tribe. I i actually. I know that building. I lived in kamloops for ten years used to drive by that building every day on my way to work and it is a i mean i don't i'm a skeptic but if if i could believe one building had bad mojo. That building isn't evil place in you can just us just drive by in. It does not look friendly it. It is a bad place At at at i'm speechless. I'm so sorry guys. But like i just. I have an awful lot to say cynthia. Silicon s okay. You can take a break okay. I'm just like just one thing. One thing that you have kind of touched on is sort of wanted to take a different angle on. Just really briefly. Is that these. it's atrocious. How these buildings came to be important right but there's also something to be said that we're pulling this from an opinion piece that was written about of fourth page news story right. This was not front page news when it happened. And it speaks to a larger pattern of abuse of indigenous peoples in north america Th there are things that happen All the time most of the time it's our fault and they're they're not well handled they're not well-publicized in there not much thought about And so like the humanist part of me sees this socially important place for a lot of people a place that reflects a melting of cultures in the article it specifically mentioned that in one of the churches the stained glass Vignettes had been changed to reflect the merging with the native culture. And those places were taken down. And i'm not saying it was wrong. I'm not saying the person who did it did the right thing but i'm also not saying they did it for the wrong reasons right. He see somebody acting out of pain and out of disgust and Whoever was responsible or who whoever whichever people were responsible for this they were acting from an interesting place and what. I would consider a good place but it also for the people who have been indoctrinated in that system is incredibly painful. It's incredibly disruptive. It's it's what happens when pain reaches a breaking point and it hurts everyone around them. And i think that that's easy to overlook but also should at least be touched on. Yeah i i was even thinking like when i read this particular opinion piece I was thinking about the the recent riots. That happened the united states after a george floyd s murder and And then i started to even ponder on the riots to happen in the sixties specifically in what's And after that Those riots that happen a the president lyndon johnson created the or appointed a panelists off for the kerner commission. I don't know if you've ever heard of it But in the kerner commission He tried to find the most middle of the road. Folks in order to kinda figure out. Why are people rioting. And what can we do about it as as as a nation and you know one of the things that they said that because i they said well these people are just riding because you know they they just want a riot they. They're bad people. They they like burning down buildings and and ruffling feathers and and being agitators right there anarchist but when the action when they actually did their investigation they discovered that the reason why the right is writing was happening was because of poverty and institutional racism that was driving inner city violence and they came to the conclusion that massive government spending and shifting resources needs to happen in order to actually quell these particular sensibilities. And exactly what did not happen. And i even remember in one of our other source articles where of the catholic church actually signed an agreement promising to raise twenty five million dollars to compensate Tens of thousands of other survivors of residential schools for emotional physical and sexual abuse. Malnutrition cultural say mean and systematic violence of basic human rights. And i want to say that twenty. Five thousand twenty. Five million dollars is not enough. Not it's certainly not enough and not a lot for the catholic church but not right because and here's another thing they don't have to raise it. They have it and they want their parisioners to do it though. That's the thing they want. They want the cadre able to donate it to them so that they can then Regard for the victims of the horrible cry. But the here's the thing they they okay so the same diocese that actually agreed to this..

You'll be you'll be good you'll be good and to my immediate left is. Our guest has for the week nate smith. Hey how are you. Hello green cynthia. Thank you for having me. I'm actually really excited to finally be on the aca show. That has the best music. So it's it's a little bit prague. I'm a little bit punk so i am. I am really excited. I'm ready to get into this stuff. Well i've been accused of being a little bit of country and a little bit of rock and roll. But i'm asking your all class in we all love rock and roll so you know. Put another dime in the jukebox baby. That's right that's right. And i just love how just continuously role with these particular puns. We're going to be needing them as the course of the show goes But if we will let us go hop right into it shall we. Let's yes let's do y- yes do that. Let's start with a spotty and a little bit of shit internet's say internet so this particular article actually comes from fox news lovely. The world's most trusted reliable wealth source of news ever lovely and we're not biased where we actually farm our material from even fox news can get a little bit something something and this particular one is actually entitled experts sound off on the media's negative or absence coverage of religion incomplete at best and also like to point out that there is a colon between religion and incomplete pun intended. I know right. I know so. I'm just gonna go ahead and read this a little bit from the article. If i so media experts argue that the fourth estate take on the fourth states take on. Faith is tenuous at best and often tainted by politics particularly in the light of a series of reports on biden's catholic catholicism is brought to capitalism that is not a word in a washington post was written last week for describing biden as deeply catholic in analysis of the us conference catholic bishops boat to advance a push by some church leaders last week to draft a formal document on the meaning of the eucharist in an apparent attempt to deny and pro-choice or i'm sorry in an attempt in an apparent attempt just attempt but an apparent one to deny biden and pro choice politicians communion. The catholic church opposes abortion as the taking of human life quote again and again the corrupt media. Just don't get religion. Fox news commentator mollie. Hemingway repack replied after seeing the washington post described biden as devout the same weekend. The new york times described pro prances as a liberal when tweeting out in link to its reports on the catholic church and Boertien and you know what i think. I'm just gonna go ahead and football it over here. i'm about to do a hail. mary do. You see what. I just did there all right rack. Which here so okay. So one of the things that i thought was really interesting about this article in particular is where they source their information from Because you're dealing with the faith and freedom coalition and the media research center so the media research Research centers the nineties and basically exists to provide favourable analysis to conservative causes. So when we pull some of their numbers and look at kind of the way they broke them down starts to fall apart And so even even their inline citations like The conservative media research centers. Tim graham said that the media can't have it both ways. The central point is this liberals want to separate church and state but they seem unable to let the church make internal decisions that affect their political standing. That's not what the story is about. That's an exact reverse worries about. But they use the poll quote from a friendly source to reframe it as a liberal attack on the church rather than conservatives within the church disagreeing about the state of a person's faithfully in their weaponising the no true scotsman fallacy against the president of the united states and by proxy the boat and then blaming us for it. That's what i think is interesting about this article. Oh my goodness you know when you just pointed out. The portion and ocado chuckled. A little guffaw came from me when i read about They seem unable to let the church make internal decisions that affect their political standing and unlike but they've already utilized internal decisions to actually affect a lot of standings including trying to When i talk about kid right but that's a whole nother story okay catholic. We're going to touch on that. A little later we are. We'll get there. Yeah we we totally are but nate. What did you think of this particular fox news. I'm with rags and that the whole thing was just a really disjointed poorly thought out piece of writing But i i thought to myself. Oh my okay. Well if the liberal media so bad Let's look at fox. News is coverage of religion. So i'm like all right. Let's i went to fox news. Which for the record is the first time in my life. I ever knew anything but yeah it's true it's true. I live in a bubble. What can i say So i i go to their New site and I'm looking at the headings right. Like politics sports All the normal headings one would expect to.
