"Later but i did see the responses to the announcement and it was like. Oh don't lose the two games and now they're canceling everything. They can't against gardner webb. They cancelled a win. Let's be honest. If they had a upcoming game against gonzaga or baylor or based on what. I saw thursday night san diego state and they cancelled the. That's the place to say. Oh do do loss to michigan. Stake dude lost illinois. They don't want to take another law. They cancelled one. Game against gardner webb. Mike shuster mike's retires with the win column. It will be one fewer win then what he would retire with if he didn't cancel this game so they're not running from anything other than the virus. They're not running from basketball. They're not running from gardner webb. They mike genuinely doesn't want to play. These games. didn't wanna play any of these games. I think for lack of a better phrase is putting his money where his mouth was after the loss illinois. I saw that a lot. Hey my she's jessica if you're wondering whether you we should be playing and you don't think we should play and you're taking sort of subtle shots at the ncaa. Then nobody's making you play. You don't have to play. I saw a lot of that which it's accurate is. I do think there are certain schools where it's not up to the coach if the or the president says play you play. But nobody's telling my jesse what asked to do from a scheduling perspective from anything perspective. So when people countered what mike said after the illinois laws with. Hey if you don't wanna play don't play. I thought that was a totally reasonable point. And this was mike stepping up a day later. Saying you know what you're right. I don't have to play so we're not going to. And i do think that is in some way leading by example if you have real hang-ups about what we're doing and how we're doing it then if you had the power to not do it then don't do it. And that is what he decided to do. And it should be noted that and we've talked about this before we talked about this in the offseason might suggest you'd never wanted us to go about this this way. This isn't somebody taking two losses. And then saying you know what. I don't know if we should be playing this. Is somebody saying i don't know if we should be playing right now. Who was saying. I don't know if we should be playing right under these circumstances all summer. All preseason was the leader on the acc coach zoom. 'cause who insisting let's try to. Let's just play each other. I i'm telling you as a check mike. She says he wanted to play. Acc only schedules conference only schedules. That started later. Perhaps in january obviously he got overall one way or another but he did not want to play in november and december and he is also somebody who has taken this virus seriously from the jump. He didn't bring their players back to august. You know most players are on campus in june. They didn't bring their players back till august. He didn't want to do what he's been doing. And then ultimately he decided. We're not going to do it anymore. I have nothing but respect for the decision would it have played better if he would've said in the preseason the has given us a schedule we'll play that schedule but we're not doing anything outside of that schedule yes. It would have played better if he'd done it. That way. as opposed to doing after you lose by double digits illinois. But i just i know from talking to people that he was always against this and i have nothing but respect for him deciding to pull the plug on what he pulled the plug on. Which again was one. Game against. Gardner webb one game against carter web. But it's duke. Its chassis so it's going to draw a lot of attention there and this coming after what he said i will. I will add that i did. I didn't expectedly here from some coaches and even an administrator about all of this on thursday and then even into friday morning got a couple of texts and there are some that agree entirely. Wished my chassis And and some that. Don't i mean. The administrator started his text. Message to me with a jerry maguire. Who's coming with me gifts. And that's in reference to if you've seen the movie where jerry maguire quits his job as an agent at the firm and then no one comes along with it so it was kind of like myisha skis kind of an on an island here. Another coach said it's a bad look from the most powerful coach the game. I'm a big proponent on the mental health side but the idea that these kids are quote in jail and quote is ludicrous. they are in luxury. Apartments getting free catered meals hooping challenges for sure. Come on man more of those as well and i also got a text from that says mike understands this as well or better than anyone else. Duke is taking every single if he wants to take off one game. That's totally his right and everyone's just going to attack him. 'cause he's coach k. So there are opposing opinions on both sides of this as were to be expected. Now let's get to nato. Who on thursday had media availability. Obviously it was done over zoom. So he was at a day but he's taking questions from the media. This is one minute. Fifty eight seconds long. I'm gonna play for you in full. This was how oats mediaeval ability went. And then obviously subsequently his quotes went viral. You know your opinion. Do you think if coach k. and lost the two nine conference games at home. If stop saying that okay. I just wanted you to say that me. So i look. Here's my deal on it. I think we'd have a whole lot more problems. If we weren't playing games. Like i mean everybody talks about co. Here's the thing if covid so bad all these. I'm i'm trying to do my best to keep the mask up. I've already had covert. So i don't even i technically have to keep it up. Nobody can get it from within the hundred and fifty days at the ncaa's recommended. I see all these other guys that haven't had it in their mass down the game. It's like they got a chinstrap on so if they're really worried about covid you'd think they're mask could be up the whole game right like so. I think some of them are are using. No we should be playing in my opinion. We one hundred percents should be playing baseball. Nobody talks about the mental. I there's a kid out of detroit and went to another high major that i just talked his uncle the other day because is is causing plate for me and detroit. He went to a school somewhere. Mental health issue came home because he was quarantined for weeks on end when he got there. Like what what are these guys going to do. If i got three daughters i they. They need to be in school. Like.

"And we're gonna use that like I said, you know, we will go all we we have players from South Carolina, North Carolina on our teams up the buffalo. So I I don't think that obviously, we'd like to keep our footprint around Elba in Alabama for sure and around here. But then if we if we need to go get players that whatever position it is from wherever it is in the country. And that's what we're going to do. To get this program up to well, we need to get it to coach. Finally, I know you got a lot to do, especially from staffing recruiting standpoint. But these are according to many troubling times in the sport of college basketball with the the apparel controversies and the trials going on. And it seems like it's it's hitting many different places. Would you address that in terms of the kind of program you have run in the past and the kind of program you hope to run it Alabama. Yeah. I mean, that's definitely something. That's been talked about a lot in the news. It's a great question should six years ago as ice school coaching Romulus people knew that there's nothing going to be done with any my players there. We kept everything above board and clean. I top one hundred players that played for me. So I didn't even want to get into the game. As far as the division one game following on the coattails of a player. I wanted to get in on my own, you know, merit. So to speak. So when I did get in. I was recruiting at ball, and we're going to run a clean program. I part of me in my wife, talking if we were gonna and even my age, I've got an agent when we spoke, and we made it real clear that if the place at a tradition of cheating, and that's what they needed to do to win at that. We weren't going there. I didn't want to be part of it. I didn't want to be a spot where they expected you not that the administration anywhere would expect you do that. But whether it be who surged owners, whatever, Well, I I didn't want to be involved with that. So we had a great place that set up the buffalo at the level. We were at nobody's paying for any of the players. We got. So it was no temptation do that. I was comfortable there after talking to Greg Byrne other speak, you know, and I think there's people that are doing it the right way in the SEC and doing it at a really high level. I mean you look at. Guy like Rick Barnes. I mean, everybody in the business associates on the open up, and he's a great guy, and he's not for taking it stuff and number one of the country for a long period of time this year. So I don't you know, and you go back to where I was at Michigan like he lines as clean as they get runs. A clink. Those guys are nationally ranked top by programs in the country. You don't have to do what some people have been trying to do to win at a high level in this game. So we're going to do it the right way made it crystal clear to everybody we've talked to that. We're not going down that road. And I myself I don't wanna go to sleep at night thinking about doing things wrong way. It's just not how I've operated ever in the past. And it's not how we're going to have to rate here. Coach, congratulations. Thank you very much for coming on. No, Trish at you have me on Paul. It's a pleasure to meet you soon. Thank you coach. Thank you coach a NATO letting us know a little bit about himself. And let's be honest. We don't know. Very much other than he has a very successful resume and Greg. Byrne liked him immensely. We'll take a short break. We'll talk a little bit about one of those coaches that coaches mentioned Rick Barnes as the vol's are playing in under an hour. Thank you for listening to the Paul finebaum show podcast. The Paul finebaum show airs weekdays on the SEC network beginning at three eastern..

"And I blocked my phone number. I call them and say, hey, I'm Greg I do research on coaches, and I and I asked him a series of questions and see. Where the conversation goes. But when I was able to reach out to his former student athletes, the responses I got about him or outstanding. And how much you know, these tough on them. But how much cares about him and his wife? Crystal was very genuinely emotional about thinking about leaving the young men at the university at buffalo, and I really appreciated the genuineness so that in and the response not only about coats staff, but his entire family was really was really remarkable quite moving to be Franken and. I Jeff here with our from our staff with the on on the search. And I I we were actually supposed to go somewhere else yesterday to talk to another coach. And I said, you know, I talked to president bell best Saint John chancellor disag-. I we got our guy. And and so just his passion about about college basketball and the whole package of what that means. We were we were thrilled. And we're very we're very excited now as her coach today, certainly. It's always fascinating to do this. And you've done the number of times both here and elsewhere. Is there is there any compass that you use subscribe to as you're doing this? Because you you you you can get carried away by somebody's personality. But there are other factors. Of course. There are I think I think Paul one of the things that I've found to be in common with the best coaches. I've been fortunate to be a part of the hiring process on is one. They have their smart. Their two are good communicators three is they have passion for working with young people in intercollegiate athletics. And what that means for you want honesty is so important that that that says report bar what you do and the integrity part of it. And nobody's perfect. Every you know, we're all we're all human role flawed. But where there's some of those core values, and it, but there's different ways to do that to coaches that probably most people don't. No. But some of our fans do is our men's and women's golf coaches JC, well McCotter Potter, they could not be any more different as far as how they approach what they do and their personalities and Jay is bouncing off the walls and make his reserved, and and very very structured and everything and they're both extremely successful coaches. Because those things I mentioned earlier about being smart, good communicators, and all those things that they have those foundation the foundational principle to allow them to be great coaches. And so I'm looking more for those foundations. But I think there's a lot of ways to do that and have success as a coach. So you know, you seem different models. No matter the sport. And so really as long as you keep those foundational ideas in mind, I think you have a chance to have success and have different coaches that will work even at the same place. What are the expectations for him and of this program over the next few years? Well, you know at Alabama we want to compete for championships. And quite frankly, the last ten years we've only been to the NCAA tournament a few times. And so we want to we want. It's not like tomorrow, we're expecting to go in and ASA championship. But we are expecting to to have the ability to go compete in the tournament. I think for Alabama to make the NCAA tournament year in and year out is a very reasonable goal..

"He he decided he was going to do it the right way he wasn't going to cut corners. He was going to build a team from two and three stars story as well known by now others chosen different paths. This league is getting a lot better. But with it. There has been plenty of scandal this year to go around as well. Yeah. Yeah. There's certainly been a lot of programs put under the microscope, and you talk about doing it the right way. And, you know, the common denominator for me, whether we're talking about basketball, or or even football right now with what I think could be a George national championship program as you've got to have that catalyst. I look at Tennessee. And you've got to have that special guy, and that's special guys grant Williams, and I saw that a couple of years ago, you know, they almost beat North Carolina on the road a couple years ago, and you look at grant Williams, and you watch the way he plays the game. It's kinda Barkley asked. You know, he's not the tallest guy. But he's still physical and athletic. And you just see that kid porn himself into every game down to the final second. And when your best player is your hardest worker you've got a chance to be special. And I think that's what's happening at Tennessee. And you know, these championship programs, again, the common denominator is having that special guy that Cadillac. List that leads the way my grid. What is Mike you knew? Of course, we will get to football. I it has been an overshadow spring so far because of the amazing run by SEC's school. So update us on how that national championship is doing and Athens. Well, they're not a national championship program. Yeah. I thought I just heard you declare them. I said I said I thought they had the potential to that. It's been it's been a few years since they won one. Well, you know, Paul you're I know where you're going with this. You know, and rightly so Georgia had four players face charges were arrested within the last month. And you know, you had a guy that was accused of slapping somebody outside of a bar backup defensive back that that you've never heard of. They had another guy that got ticketed and was found not to have a a valid licenses license had been revoked and so he was arrested for that. That's too. And then there was some skirmishing downtown Athens last Saturday night that apparently turned chaotic. According to the Athens police department, and there were a couple of Georgia players involved in that one an incoming freshman was involved, and then another one a receiver Tyler Simmons, a guy that that I think that George is going to have to really rely on this year. So that's not good. And that's where you've better find that leadership. You better find that catalyst that I was talking about that guy that can lead from within. Because you know, these coaches are sitting at home on their couches on a Saturday night or they're out recruiting. They're not walking up and down the streets. Trying to police teams have to police one another in these situations. You know fans are and when others have gotten in trouble, Georgia fans or quick to point out and raised..

"And even Joe leave. I think at the time during all that while it was wrong as the interim came out publicly and said he was a candidate that he's you know, he's basically applying for the job. I you don't get that feeling in this situation at much, you know, in part of it might be because Tony was on a staff with will who might you know, being obviously a little hot water. And in might, you know, might be in more high water later down the line. So you don't don't get that feeling that much. I don't let me end with of predictions because I do agree. And and I know you're doing your best you're very reporter. But there's only so much any of us know right now. Now. But perhaps you have an opinion will Wade will will be the coach at LSU next year number one. You know, I it doesn't it. It seems like it's going to be very hard for the tea parties to to mend you know, to repair this relationship because you got to remember, you know, when will put out that statement Thursday before they asked tournament LSU, Termine Oprah. I mean, he basically chaff tie the university and its leaders for suspending him, and then he called the action inappropriate VIN LSU came back and in. Instead, we'll we'll have an admitted that he didn't do anything wrong. I is this public back and forth that to repair this relationship. I just don't see it happening. And Secondly, and perhaps more important what your level of concern in relation to the NC double A after we'll Wade appears in court in New York next month opening up a a major investigation into this program. Well, that's another good question that I don't, you know, I don't know the answer to. But certainly, you know, the NCAA has been in Baton Rouge. They'd been on the ground here. They were involved. And all the devante, smart interviews. They wanted to be involved in the interviews will Wade in that's part of the reason he wouldn't talk to LSU didn't want to be in the room at the so all that kind of Kells me a lot. I need to know. You know, if if a coach is is to afraid to speak with the NCAA present that that's probably all I need to know about what could come out later down the line. And it's probably not good. Yeah. Because I think it's a given that if you're a coach in good standing, and you do not cooperate with the NCW. You are suddenly in very poor standing, right? If if. Yeah. Right. If you if you if you know, you're innocent didn't do anything wrong. Then usually you would you would come in and talk, you know, so in that's the way I think a lot of university leaders at L. Hugh trio, you know, they one of them told me it was a pretty big red flag that that will would come in and talk in. That's why I just think this entire situation is going to be tough to a pair. Finally, you mentioned your article about Tony Benford and and the fan reaction. What what specifically are are LSU fans bothered and concern by in relation to what you have written. Well, I just you know, it's a it's a positive feature story on a guy that not allow a lot of people know much about you know, so I just kinda wrote about his life and his career. And there's some quotes in there from his mentor is about how he deserves a second chance at a head coaching job. And you know, LSU fans are are are not excited about the possibility of you know, him being hired. I guess even though the story really doesn't suggest that I it's it's weird. I it is a it is a fan base that like I said, I've I've not quite so it's all about we'll wait. It's all about. We'll wait for them is what you're saying that that's correct. If you're not if you're not writing something positive about we'll come back. Don't write anything at all things be. Well, hard to please LSU fans these days than always great, by the way. How do you think they're going to be doing the tournament?.

"So yeah, I think the Kentucky's benches shorter I think Kentucky is going to compete in the SEC. But I think Kentucky is gonna lose out Saturday to the fighting ROY Williams who has an year under the newly contract it really well is on four. So it makes no difference because then never going to. I mean, he's viewer ROY Williams in your name was on the floor would still make a difference to have a contract. I guess it's not like they're not gonna pay him. Right. Right. Right. They got him on a cheap bit got way. Cheap. All right. This last one I have for you guys nine pm Saturday night on ESPN two number one Kansas number eighteen Zona state, the wolves Fargo arena in Tempe. Arizona, Dan who you have. I'm going to take just because I'm going to believe in Bobby Hurley that he is building a program. And if you are building a program, and it is a high major program, then you guess what? Guess what? Then you. Go ahead, and you beat Kansas without us Buki vase bookie was playing that say Kansas because I'd always pick Kansas. No matter what I'm going there Zona state. And I think you're gonna see coach I think you're going to have to make a decision on the rush the court because I think you're going to see at the storming the court will happen in Tempe. And you know, what as the Commissioner? I'd say if our state wins that game it totally legal Kordestan quiz, Kansas number one in the country. One of the things is if you're number beat number one of the country you can start the now there's a qualifier. If if it's not sold out not sold out. You cannot rush the court. Because of its not sold out. Then it's not important to enough people who rushed the court. So stated you wanna rush to court. If you beat number one Kansas something out if you got like ten thousand fourteen thousand fifteen thousand seat arena. It's just I'm sorry. Did stay in your seats and clap and be happy with the win. Having said that I think this is almost like a six seven and under gate. I both teams play really fast. Both teams have really good guard play. Both teams are have some young backward. Guys lubes door it absolutely killers. Allen cheat them transplant state is is very very good. I'm going to still go with Kansas. I think Kansas just they haven't played well in a while there do even with this undersized lineup to have a good game. And I'm gonna go Kansas. Figuring out a way to win this go you always take the field against Kansas. I know I'm setting you up for later. Although right now the field. I'm dean wades out for Kansas state's out. I'm going to tell you the biggest competition to teams station Okla. Oklahoma Iowa State when they get healthy because they have terrific guards. And they've got a lot of them. And he see us get better. Now. TCU is getting better. They started up. Hey, before by the way, speaking Iowa State before everybody jumps on me. I don't like Penny Hardaway guess what? I rip Steve Prohm to for the way he acted against the fricken, Iowa Hawkeye. So get off me already. I'm going early. Get off me before people have a chance to get on me. Yeah. But I mean, it's it's just the way it is. You You know what I mean? know what I mean? What else games things so gay? That's it. We we've just we. CLA Ohio State Saturday before you got to have a junior junior reference who you liking. You know, what is your horribly as Cincinnati? I mean, usually played at Cincinnati hater, totally different style. The fighting Steve Alford two let's face it. Their team has some deficiencies. I cannot imagine the losing third game in a row..

"Semi-final even wanna talk. Hey. Always goes back. Leroy dockage. That's just the way it is in something. Interesting your style of play different. I mean, you guys defend hell out of people. But as fast as you guys play some teams talk about running and attack, and like, you do get that thing up like in a New York minute. Is that something that you've always done is? That's something that this team fits like you guys. You guys are entertaining. Because of how quick you bring that thing onto defense. Yeah. It's coach cooked at high school Detroit for right outside. You turn Romulus like your time. We got on air. But I you know, I had athletes back then it'd be like the play fast. So we I used to go down went down to watch TV Brown. Memphis when he ran training camp with the grizzlies and they played fast. He kind of started the drink some pace back in the NBA when it got really slow and learn a little bit from him a little bit there. I I like I like coaching that way. I think kids like playing that way. And I think we can recruit to that. Because guys wanna play that way, and we've got athletes people. So we might have been more than streets, you pay something more athletic than Syracuse. I don't I don't disagree with. From one to seven. I thought we were better to be. I mean, they've got percents. Try a pro and battles. Obviously, really good. But after that, you go three through seven I'd take out three through seven, and you guys. And we guard we guard. I mean, that's different. But like our guys we've got two of the best defensive guards in the country. So when devante Jordan, Dante Carruthers get into you. And we can turn you over and get out in transition that that's when we're playing our best basketball coach, it's a blast watching your team and congratulations on your success and Marquette that'll be another entertaining game. Because both of you guys are going to go at it. And it's going to be pretty good. His minutes on the bus right up. I just finished watching the candidates day gala job forty five on it. And they're the number two ranked defense in the country right now. So it's not like he dropped forty five on savannah state or somebody put him on a pretty good team. So we got we got our hands full night. We'll good luck look phone watching it now. And I I agree with Dan. I mean, you guys just take care of business because you guys are you're a team that not only will be tournament. But your team that I'm sure people won't want to see in their brackets. And that's always a good being a team that other people don't wanna play against as always a good thing. Appreciate the become as as great going from two former coaches, Dan, appreciate your support of the MAG. Both you guys so enjoyed watching. Both your teams play to us. The only game. I ever went to Duke Virginia Tech went in there and beat him in overtime. I don't know if you remember that one. But I was sitting right there. It was unbelievable loveless. Both you guys. Hang just. So you know that earlier in that year bowling green went into Virginia. Now was it that Don watch it that on here. How? Guys, hold on scheduling dial data. What though that was about? I you don't don't don't start that the that's a little fantasy that day baggage as and it was by the way, let's say, you know, that it was illegal basket. It was my first year at adversity attack. It was illegal basket like a coward. He ran it took his team off the court. I did to leave. Before the officials could actually get it. Right. I mean cowardly by that talking about cowardly at they were all showering. Buffalo. Yeah. That was at buffalo crowd. We don't wanna talk about that would coach we will talk about your grab. Thanks..

"Maybe maybe they had one since at work, but was just a high majors on the road. Yes. So I like did they you know, and they were a team that beat Notre Dame. When Notre Dame was top ten in the country last year, and they've got just about everybody back. So it's gonna be good Lee. You know? And I I think I mean, should I think we're ranked like nights in the country last. I what if you took. Everybody's average net. Ranking. I think if you go to ten Tom I think it was like the ninth ranked Lee chimp on to switch a pretty good league. Antler is great. Well, it ninety nine believe in Serbia. Can then went to the the Sweet Sixteen. They were last at large. Maybe that's changed. But I don't think it has. And I think this year is look I'm gonna I'm gonna beat the drum. Nobody what because you know, coach. I mean, it is not easy winning the MAC term. It's not easy when they turn kid. It's a shot and you're out. But I think you guys have put yourself in the best shape of anybody. No question to be in the terminus time, the MAC, it's two teams. It's it's it's it's time that opens itself back up, and you guys are doing a great job Yar agree. And and you're right. It's been subservient to pave that was the last night been a twenty years. I just think with what we've done already haven't even hopefully we can go in and get a win at Marquette. But let's say we we don't I mean, we played as many. Yeah. Road games against mean. We we played three I is on the road will want to out three. But if we lose tomorrow night. So I don't know what else you'd asked us to do. You know, obviously, we gotta take care of business. And the conference you can't go in and lay an egg. You know? But I think we will guys are pretty mature. You know, barring any entries, we stay healthy. We should have a quality conference record. I think we've done enough. And like you said, it's it's not going to turn amounts shoot. We we almost lost the Toledo in the mayor championship last year. And they their their best player couldn't play in the game. So, you know, it's no telling what happens, you know, might be postponed. It said, you're you know, who knows what happens. But I think we've done in often if you look at some other so-called, high major conferences some of the early down this year. So I don't you know, I'd be disappointed to see four or five teams from some particular high major copses, and I don't wanna get into too much 'cause I made some people mad with my comments after a alternative win last year. But if you get the drift I'd be a little disappointed if they took four or five teams, some of those conferences it didn't take to ours. Send me. Whenever you're mad about. I'll put it out there man in. I'll be your mouthpiece brother because entity. Hopefully, Marquette, right? Well, send me whatever propaganda. You went out beforehand because I'm not going to mess around with you guys. Have you guys have earned the right to be where anybody else in the country is right now, whatever you think about anybody in America and the NC double A tournament at this moment. Whether it's Duke, whether it's Marquette, whether it's K, I don't care till you guys have earned the right to be in the exact same conversation. And by the way, JD cows made the most horse bleep call in America in ninety nine Zerbi beat us in a.

"And then there aren't even dates available. Because of what everyone else is. Doing scheduling at at that level. You know, Dan, Dan was longer. And I was a beach state is absolutely brutal. But it's much more difficult in today's environment. Because of the number game league games that people play just makes it brutal moving forward. You get through this part of your schedule. You get an elite play and one thing about your conference. Obviously you've become Duke you become the Duke of the MAC in that year the biggest game on everyone's schedule. And and and your the kind of the red letter game in terms of if you can beat buffalo. Let's face it. You know, that's going to be a quality win make give you a chance to get in that large like look at Toledo. Who's having a good preseason? How do you get your guys to flip the switch from Syracuse Marquette this ride that were on to the grind of your league? Which is probably the most level playing field in terms of travel and and teams. Yeah. Good point to bring up last year. We we didn't have quite the success revenue this year non conference, we didn't have less Clark you'd eligible till till the Syracuse game this is first one. So we were close we picked Cincinnati really close plate. Syracuse tough like Texaco, we didn't gain win. So then are you know, we knew we had to come into conference play. And we didn't have any yet lark spin lash. And we'll we came in and went when eight notice start conference. So I think guys really locked in. They won't be cured. Really understood it this year, it's gonna be a little different. We've had a great non conference. Now, we're going to have to turn the focus to to the conference play. And I think it's a maturity factor that guys can't overlook teams. We should we went to northern Illinois who ended up finishing last in the MAC last year. We lost at that place. You know, we we didn't shoot it. Well, from the free throw line that goes to overtime, we lose. They you know, they put it on social media. They sit you're right. It's kind of like do they celebrated like they like they made the? Final four after they beat us at at their gym. So you know, that we kind of told our guys that's what you're going to get either as best shop. Then I kinda flip it with our team. Like don't we want? Everybody's best shot because at the end of the day, we need to be tween our best basketball March. And if you're not bringing your best shot in March in you, don't boring college basketball. So when we go into the back tournament, we're going to get everybody's fast shot dead. Well, let's get used to taking everybody's best shot every game in January and February. So we're used to playing at a high level, you know, against everybody's best shot throughout the course of the conference season. So I think he turned into a positive, hopefully, we can take up enough conference wins and what we've done in nine conference. We get an at large bed, but hopefully, don't beat one. But if we do offer done enough to get one. Hey, Nate when you look at the MAC, you know. You can't have nice year bowling green had a terrible year. Then they got going little bit Easterns played. Well, they got the same kind of what do you see? Toledo's playing really well like you say you look, Amy. We're obviously rank everybody's talking about us. But if you go look at the MAC as a whole, it's actually really good. I mean like you say Ken state without they played some really good Beadman and Bill that one the Bill. Yeah. Vanderbilt they got the win. They played MO teams talk. I mean, I think Toledo still only had one loss by member. Correct. So and then eastern been a little bit disappointing. 'cause everybody's projected them be really good. They're super talented. And I don't know if they just got a new guy side, and they kind of moved James Thompson little foreign of five. I don't know if it's taken a little time. But that's on. It's like Syracuse version two point zero like with rob Murphy comb from Syracuse. So they make it tough to score on is gonna be a legal and ball state. So I think ball state's only losses are if I remember, right?.

"And the other thing is like he's a tough cover whether you gotta starter Orel backup in. But it's every every teams backup big it's impossible for them to guard up. So when you bring him off, you did the big the bigs are a little more tired when he comes in. Or you got a backup big one of the two, and it makes it impossible for him to guard. And I think we don't mind telling crazy plan well enough that he allows us to bring Nick off the bench just to get a good enough guide and start and then when you bring him Carruthers both in and they both play so hard in the physical. I think you're right. It kinda changes the way the games being played when they come off the bench. Coats. I've been in you spot. You got a good team. You gotta team you want to set up to make the get may get a run in the NC double a term. Everybody wants you to schedule harder. But it's not as easy as people think to get anybody to play particularly after last year. Now, you have a great schedule was it easy difficult setting the schedule up and his anybody in America coming to buffalo to play. So we already had the West Virginia game and the Marquette game signed before we beat Arizona. Nice. So that was done. I don't know. I don't know December January last year. So those those were gone, the the Syracuse wanna actually talk to Fe I am at the final four when we played them last year too at their place, and our PI was, you know, top thirty. So with the way the quad one quite to all networks. Syracuse beating us at their place last year may have got them into the tournament. So if you guys remember, they were really really borderline on the mobile everybody question why they got in. But they they had a one win against us at at home. Even though his own game for them are PI was high enough. So so he said as long as we'll play you plans every year. I'll see if he you know that after this year. Yes, we saw. So he scheduled us after it beers on it just because it helped him get in the tournament. He thought it was a good game for them. So those are those three three by games guy. Then after that, you're right. It was almost impossible to get people to schedule series and let us especially come NAR place. So the only way we got really was southern Illinois, and we had to we had to go to their place, and they came to our place in the same year. So as nine conference in a home and home within the same year, which you don't see that often. But it was the only way to get a decent old game against a quality opponent. And then obviously that the MTA gave San Francisco on neutral site, which which I think's gonna end up being a real quality went come March force to the hardest thing right now is all the power five twenty games. And then you get the twenty games, and then they got an exempt event they got a made for TV game. And it's almost what what is difficult in scheduling for team as good as your team..

"Your poise Massenburg responsible for that is a team thing is that who you are. I mean, we know we don't turn it over a ton. We turned it over a little more than normal. It gets them. But we will we when we open the game up there in the middle of the second half. We got to lead. We we didn't have a turnover for like twelve and a half minutes about the fourteen minute. Mark all the way down to a minute and a half to go on a game. We didn't have a turnover. So I think taking care of the ball getting buckets in transition. And then like you said, you know, I think as the game went on it kind of happened last year too. We weren't great against zone early. And then it what war on you kind of get used to where you can get the ball in the middle of his own guys kind of subtle in against it. We know eventually we started making some shots, then get back to you know, sometimes you just miss him. So I taught guys that law of averages plays into you know, comes into play here. You might miss on open ones early. They could talk to hit them here. Eventually. Yeah. You talking about Santa Lanta zone. I think part of the things you can't simulate zone really in your practice with your. Second unit. So like once you see it and get a feel for the length and how high hard at high. They come out. I think it changes. But it also changes when you put Nick Parkinson again. I mean that dude is different bringing him off the bench. I mean, really changes the personality of your team when he comes in because you guys crush them on the glass, and I know that was important to you. But Brigham Perkins off the bench. What goes behind that? I mean, it kind of started. He came off the bench is freshman year and played pretty well. 'cause we had you know, guys that had it on classmen. And then he was in and out of the starting lineup. You know, he he's matured a lot over the last few years. But he. Yeah. Points relaunched his mind urine air, and we we where he was starting. You know, kinda got to make a statement bring him off the bench, and then he's playing well. And then I start to think about it. Well, even violent he kind of picks up foul so him and Carruthers both come off the bench, and they're both a little more file thrones. And the rest of the guys at the referees are usually trying to establish themselves out of the gate. You know, they're gonna make sure everybody knows who's in charge of the first four minutes, and the you know, sometimes you can pick up cheap one while they're doing that. If I can save him, a file all the referees are stablishment it, and I can actually play more minutes than I. Could as a starter that goes into play?.

"If he's not on a court. You know, what you're a little bit more tach? You don't have you don't have to get as far off to help. All right. You know, you can bluff in a gap and get back to your man and still contest shot. So just the threat of that big dude on the block that left block put so much pressure on your defense. And then it also enables you defense, leave your Kansas. The be a little bit more assertive and have a little bit pressure. And and that young backward is not since playing really well Grimes has struggled a little bit. And you know, they're playing trolley more a little bit more. It seems like but they're like six four and under team right now. And they they do great stuff. But they're not they're not for sure not the same team limit. Let me flip it. You know, we're going to be talking to NATO ch- later on Syracuse. Underwhelming. No one makes a play for anyone else. They don't get anything easy. It seems like they're always playing late into the clock. It just seems like that that they don't have the toughness. They gave up eighteen offensive rebounds to a very good. Obviously buffalo team. They're not what we thought they weren't. They were very good set against the highest state. Yeah. I'm telling you. It's a really good win. Yes. They were very good. So, you know, how this goes sometimes people don't know these names, but guiding Bart FOX is a producer guy. Yeah. And he all he does is does games for BT. Any is games for us. He has a million games. He has unbelievable sense. Tax me. He's doing the game buffalo Syracuse. He goes. Hey, watch here. Syracuse is winning by like five he goes guaranteed Buffalo's going on a run and sure enough they went on a run. I'm telling you why. Now when you see Syracuse up-close, you're unimpressed the game against Ohio State. They drilled a boatload of threes. You started making everything Seth. Well. Guess what is you said? Nothing comes easy nothing inside. I mean, what are they going inside two percent who sets gotta wanna go in for set once show people what he? Can't do and hang out on the perimeter. Right. You. So there's you know, it's like Purdue almost it's like, all right? We got nothing inside. We got you know, guys that can make shot or to whatever. But they're not a look this isn't, you know, Steph curry shooting a basketball your hit or miss with these guys. And I promise that bay go in some games because his bay high many win games. But man is at right now unimpressive team set, and and you know, we're gonna talk to Nate outs. But I thought they were more poised than Syracuse particularly down the stretch got better shots. I thought NATO tes and his staff did a great job as good a job as I've seen of not putting the ball in band spots against his own. They whipped it around. They went in and out quickly with it. I thought they were more athletic than Syracuse. And quite frankly, I thought they were tougher than Syracuse. I thought they I thought they were tougher and I think putting that Perkins kid in the middle of having those four guys on a primitive pass it and make plays. They're more of it. You know, everyone says possessions, I get a kick out of the position list thing. I'll tell you what. Position. This is in my opinion. Nevada's position lists Buffalo's position lists those guys they have skilled players at all five positions. And it'll be interesting to watch what Syracuse has going on. So, yeah, we'll be back in a minute with buffalo head coach NATO but first a word from him skies. Sixty six percent of men lose their hair by age thirty five that's a big problem. When your hair's going back on defense. The thing is when you start to notice hair loss. It's too late. I can verify that all of a sudden, you know, I'm coaching a Colombian the stuff is just coming out in a shower. That's an issue. It's easy to keep the hair. You have them replaced the hair you've lost. How will you feel a year from now if it's business as usual up there? Why guys to sit back and watch the hairlines move backwards when they can turn to.

"Yup. I looked it up the other. King of the internet. I know I well, I'm bored. My life is boring. And I like to, you know, make it interesting. He will be if if he coaches, I don't have it here in front of me. I wish I did. I went we should've talked before the show, and I could have had this. But I do I'm gonna look it up as we're talking actually. But I do believe that he can get fifty right now. Yeah. He'll get two thousand easy. No. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Sure. So I think that's pretty cool. And and that's great. So that was one thing but on top of that so two weeks ago, he was the worst coach in America. But they gave him an eight year extension, which is interesting, and he was doing a terrible job and his team, and then Gonzaga comes in and people say with North Carolina upset that know when you play at North Carolina, and it's all of a sudden he had his team's attention. It seemed to me, and I know Luke maye is much better at the five into four. He becomes a match up nightmare at the five not as much to four. But it seemed to me that the ball was moving better. Look carolina. Get back. On defense. If you play them rebound the basketball. All right. I think those and it handled what I call the junk, you know, which is the traps in and three quarter court traps and stuff out of timeouts in the back taps and all the stuff they do on free throws. But they looked really good. They looked. They looked final four national championship. Good with the energy and how they played and they're still developing an identity when you agree with that. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah. And you know, Seth when I when I watched that game. And I'm sitting there thinking man as you said a week ago they were the worst coach team in America a week ago. You know, ROY needed to go the team couldn't play. And then you get nine days of practice. And next thing, you know, I thought they were just better than I mean, let's let's be honest. I mean in that game. I'm not saying over the course of the year, they're going to be I don't know who knows. But in that game, if you were going to say to me, all right shirts and skins who's the number one or two or three whatever team in the country is no question. You said North Carolina right now, we're not seeing the best of. Gonzaga. They've played no riddle schedule playing without Tilly declare them out Crandall. It seems like Perkins can get worn down a little bit hilly, obviously changes a little bit. And I was talking to few the other day. And he said the hardest thing for him is he's a freighter practice different practice because they can't afford another injury. Don't be afraid coats. I'm just I'm just I'm just the messenger. I am just the messenger. But and they've had a rough road. I mean, they played you know, they they've played a brutal preseason schedule. If you think about who they played whether whether it was Tennessee, whether it was obviously out out in Maui, whether it was Washington going into Carolina. So they've put a good schedule. It's amazing how within a week's time. You can go from obviously life is wonderful or life is miserable to the other side. Boom, just in New York. But that's kind of like basically a microcosm of your life, isn't it? Yeah. It is. Yes. Believable just saw shirtless picture of me that somebody. And I'm like come on. What did you take that picture down isn't an ad? It's like come on you doing a Weight Watchers profound doing I'm doing a whole sculpting. And I'm like coast as you just go to the gym workout. I stop eating. I lost eighteen thousand in. That's like come on people. And I know you've got a cool scoping head?.

"The game. Is scheduled because Rick Barnes and tubbies relationship, but they had a packed house against Tennessee. There's a good energy and people are excited about Nef's basketball. And I I think that whole act, and I I really believe it was an act was just to galvanize the fan base that you know, what I'm going to draw a line in the sand. I'm not backing down to anyone. I don't care. We're not the little sister to the Tennessee. But the the deal at the end was was just plain wrong. And then you know, what message you send in your team. I mean, let's see I disagree with that. I disagree with that. I I why is it. Always what message you say. You're mad you talk and players like it in the way, you go. I mean, why is it always about the kids the poor kids? Well, the poor kids like you just said, you're you're you don't the situation you gotta play or anymore. Yeah. And you can't just you know. Yeah. I go back and forth on a part of me is like good for good for penny. Hardaway doing it. The other part of me is what I said earlier. So I'm I'm conflicted on this. So you're complaining I'm more than I am. Because seriously. It's always like when somebody does something. Oh, the poor kid look when I was I was. eighteen years old. And I was playing at Indiana. I can handle whatever was thrown at me from coach night. Whether it's in season on the brain getting a ball off my face or him saying swearword in press cowards in matter me one bit. So I am conflicted part of me is like all right Hardaway and Miller like act like adults, and the other part of me is I don't really care if you wanna cuss out another coach and make this interesting that's five I'll tell you this are they playing next year. I played an accident. Tennessee, no doubt about watching. And they're going to have good players. And like, I said, I think that you know, he look these guys seem like their plan for him. He's freeing among and crazy and the Klay crazy play while. That about it. So that was one interesting thing. Interesting thing last week was I a couple of weeks ago, you know, ROY Williams who just got a new eight year contract. He's sixty eight. So that'll get him to. I think seventy six not mistaken. Our guys is don't let it go. Good coach. I mean, it's all first of all this rival leaves really. Here's my thing. Does ROY Williams really need a contract? I mean, his name is on the court. But here's the court. I like like do you really? I mean, like they're not getting rid of ROY Williams eating co-chairs long as he wants his name is on a court the next day, by the way, you know, your your top five in the country having this great current class. And we think you want to go, but my is on the court. I mean, it's not like, so I mean, it's a nice gesture. It looks good. It's good for recruiting. I guess I mean, you know, but let me ask you this different. Seth let me ask you this. They gave him a contract extension. I just read this this morning. He's not one of the top twenty five paid coaches in college basketball. No now, how's that possible? It's kind of like the Notre Dame football coach is not one of the like the highest pay. Coach's right. It's just one of those things honor just to coach there. No. I just think that you know, I think it's one of those things that okay? It's not like he's not well paid right? He's been there. A long time. That's his school. I think they get him on the cheap because he loves the place and he came back. And I think that I don't think at this stage. That's as important to him as he really is kind of ingrained in North Carolina. I think he's appreciative of the opportunity coach myth gave them and the and what he's done with the opportunity, and I'm not sure that's as big a thing because he's still making a lot of money. Yeah. But I mean like th- the eight year thing, which is I it sounds good. At a let me ask you this. I don't know how many wins. He has right now. Like would like thirty a year or thirty twenty eight a year get him two thousand..

"I'll tell you one thing this stuff going on to college basketball, Nate oats coming on his show and obviously coming off a great win against Syracuse. But you know, one thing about basketball, this some storylines stuff going on your last week saw an interesting game against Memphis, Tennessee. And you know, you watch that game on fold Memphis at home. I sell out since I had hair on my head a good atmosphere. Good energy. But Tennessee was just better. They were tougher. They were more physical even with Jordan bone on the bench. Maybe one of the most improved players in the country. Bowl was terrific last night as well. Tennessee prevails kind of going away, but then press conference and all of a sudden penny. Hardaway basically goes off on Rick Barnes. I talked to Rick Barr yesterday. And it was about flopping and reports in mentioned anything about flopping it got a little testy like kind of rivalry games. Get testy. Rick was joking and asking his is is play by play guy. You know that game was pretty wild. I said well, you ready to take on their radio guy. Like, just joking. I mean, come on. Can we can we laugh a little bit and penny went into his press conference? In went off on Rick said, he didn't teach flopping while you watch the video. There was a lot of flopping in that game. But besides that. And then as he was walking off he dropped the old left bomb on Rick Barnes. And here's the I got no problem with you defending your players, and it's a good move galvanizing your fan base. And you're getting everyone behind you. And you you protecting your players you want to do that. That's fine. But if you got a problem with another coach. Hiccup the phone call the dude and talk to him man to man, and when you're walking off out of a press conference under your breath, dropping an f-bomb about your opponent that just beat you when you're five and five. I don't get it. I thought it was classless in my opinion. I thought it's typical. I mean, look typical of this when I saw it was Mike Miller and Penny Hardaway in a plain looking like two guys trying to play coach, you know, when they got the job there in sweats. They rent a private plane looking like two little kids playing coach. I'm not surprised by anything that happens coming out of Memphis. I think penny Hardaway's now, look you can recruit. But you gotta be able to coach these guys. And then the comment get they f outta here by by heart. Well, we'll Barnes wasn't there. So where's he getting out of their Barnes? Hanley great. And if if you don't like Rick Barnes that's on. You look you got your brains beat ice till coaches in the MAC at the means, look if you want to beat me by hundred beat me by hundred if you talk about me talk about me, but don't like Emotiv, I beat you by hunt it and don't wind motive, I take with you. And if we got a problem, let's just talk about it. I don't know. Memphis is trying to come back making move pennies trying to be the new hip, you know, whatever guy with Mike. Miller. And when I look I'm not surprised at anything that happens out of there after I saw that picture of Miller and Hardaway in an airplane in there coaching used to be a profession where guys even though the yelled they screamed they were above being like players, regardless. And and you know, what the truth of the matter is I got no use once they win some games. Good for them. You know, they have to be kid coming next year. Someone crude in the country. So we'll start paying attention to him. But you know, if you're going to be a coach in college basketball act above just being like a player, there's a respect factor to thing. There's no doubt about it. And it's the professionalism fact that thing and look they can dress the way they want and low. I mean, you know, what his teams play hard and seems like their shots elections and very good. But they're trying to create a style of play, quote, unquote, MBA style. I have no problem like a coach your team. Yeah. I don't like how they went behind tubby Smith's back. They get the job either. But let's face it. You know, what they got a packed house against Tennessee?.
