That I thought it was an easy name and Vince is trying to tell me when we got married I got married to him when I was eighteen years old and And I thought missiles joking when he asked me to marry him and I was like Ooh I'm standing there getting married it was weird but. It was he asked a Wendy's like, let's get married. I was unsure. Okay thought he was kidding. And I show up and all black. And my wearing combat boots and I stopped down the aisle two hundred miles an hour and I was like, let's get this done. Then I started laughing. Then we were married and everybody. "It's Peter King hosted the aptly named Peter King podcast dropping every Wednesday. I chat with big football people. Now I've added a second mini dropping Monday mornings capitalizing football morning in America column. Listen all right what could go wrong. That actually should have been the name of my podcast asked what could go wrong. What could go wrong? He's important Welcome to the ASPIRINS podcast I'm your host Nate Bryan with steeler. TART Steve thanks for being here. Thank you thank you say Exciting Red Eye Monday after late night home from Phoenix. I'm impressed you look Pretty Wide wide-eyed. You look pretty good yourself. Probably neither of us as good as Denny Hamlin who wins at Raceway to advance to the championship round and joined his. Teammate Kyle Busch I. He made Mark Drake's junior and Kevin Harvick and I'm glad you're here stevie because it feels to me like Chris. Gabe Hart is the Steve Waugh Tart Denny. Hamlin that you were to orange junior in a way because downgrade the poor guy that no I mean I see pro series. Yeah Chris Gebhardt and any have found a way to do it on their own. Think you saw it with the swagger. I disagreed with the final pit. Call soon as it happened. He had a huge gap of lap cars. He could've put on four tires. I can't say he would have been the first off pit road. He could have been the first car. Pit Road maybe only beaten by the twenty one I would take that position every day. Gebhardt stood there made the call and and then and then kind of let his guard down victory lane after and said Yeah. My heart was pounding. I didn't know if that was right. Call but that's what we were going to do. And that's what I did and you know what. Listen I have no problem saying I disagree I I disagree and I have no problem raising my hand and saying you know what I apparently was wrong because two tires did work and it was impressive and toback to your original statement. Danny you know just believed in it and made it right and that's kind of been emblematic. I think of why this relationship is work so much. In the reason the gay part reminds me of you with Dell junior is gay bar comes in a and he has this accountability. He has this. We're going to do things differently. WE'RE GONNA hold everybody to higher standards not that. The team wasn't capable of winning or continue championship it before but there was something missing and then he talked about it a little bit yesterday that they're not best friends off the track but clearly the professional side works and Gabe. Gabe heart believes in him. I think the way you believed in Dale Jr. at a time when juniors conference was low I think Denny's confidence was a little bit low cut off last year and it's worked well between them completely. I think gave heart believes denny at times more than denny may believe in denny that's Not a placebo man. That's real. I mean. Sometimes people that are extremely skilled talented and whatever they do lose their way and forget why they're so good at something and it's hard for us that don't have that skill to explain it. I can't drive a race car I I can't. I'm not a professional athlete. So sometimes that lack of ability helps me appreciate their ability helps me remind the driver you you really damn good. Look at everything you've done and Denny Hamlin this year on the track off the track in the media on social media taught top to bottom inside and out is a different style driver. Then he wants was the one thing he didn't change which I actually like is. He has the superstar superstar swagger. Yes some don't like and pick on them and it's fine if you don't like it and he's okay if you don't like him which I think is great but you know sports heroes become heroes. Because they're not immortals they're they're bigger than the people cheering them on they act bigger than and Denny's that guy right he's got the Jordan man. He'll take a picture of his plane. He'll tell you how how good he can be not boastfully but confidently and I actually think in today's sports we need stars like that. There's GonNa be a group that don't like it they're GonNa like the Ryan Blaney kicked back. You know trucker hat and a cold beer and that's Great Cheer Ryan Blaney. But there's a group that I think you earn for some swagger and if you're looking for swagger you kind of have it well we got it. We got both ends of the spectrum yesterday from Denny Him we got it certainly. During the race the way he dominated the way he took over over controlled at the second half overcame nearly restart problems and one onto tires at the animal. And we'll get to that call in a minute but we also heard it from him afterward he was telling us on one hand. He's got this by the book. Fly Right Kerchief. We're doing things differently this year and but then he's also telling us any ham when that. Hey I stayed in a mansion in Scottsdale League with Kyle Larson Ricky stenhouse junior and last night we played tennis until one. Am One am the night before. Maybe the biggest race of his career to date. We mentioned he's got that swagger obviously it works for him and gave heart despite being who he is sort of. I think understands that. Yes we're going to instill this accountability in this team. But we're still going to let any kind of be who is is in some ways right. Grace coaches coach their players to their strength skill sets in preparation. And that's not linear. It's not the same for everyone you know. Oh I think it's funny that they all work for coach Gibbs Right Super Bowl championship coach for any football team. If anyone listening likes football it takes Such a variety of skill sets talent and personalities to have a successful fifty three person roster in the NFL level. And I really feel that. That's what we're we're talking about here right. People can question how denny prepared doesn't matter as long as Gebhardt feels that his driver's doing what he needs to do and then he feels like he's doing what he needs to do then I'm not sure they really have to answer to anyone else and it takes. Success helps a lot of this right if he goes out there and runs bad. They're like yeah well maybe should have been up to one in the morning but you get to a point where I mean. He's done this a long time. He's almost forty years old. He's won a lot of races. I don't think we can. I don't think it's fair. Appear to press judge how he decides to prepare this point. It's easy to question a younger driver who hasn't found their way. Then had you know we talk about the the disappointment of the Chamie. Amy Chip that got away. That was nine years ago. You know it wasn't one or two. Yeah there's a lot of races in nine years almost three hundred races. He's run since then and I don't think he he has a problem talking about got it. Yeah this is what I did. He doesn't have a problem talking about it. All Actually WanNa get to that and gave heart heard what Denny Hamlin said Friday to us in the media center essentially saying. Hey I'm okay. Hey with being the new Mark Martin. I'm okay we don't win a championship this year. I expect to win one. I want to win one but if I get labeled ended my career as best actor driver best driver driver maybe never to win a championship. Like Martin I'm okay with that and gave heart Kinda took a little bit umbrage that and said wait a second like and this is where I think. He's got this belief in him that I I think Dale Jr. that change that and change the direction of that team. It feels like gave heart. Did this year and you yes it helps when you open the season by winning a Daytona five hundred. But what's it like. I guess for crew chief to hear that I appreciate the candor from Denny Hamlin on one hand and that ability to be secure and himself but on the other hand you probably want him to say. Hey of course or something to be angry if I finished the career without championship right and most important is I just want to drive their no that it's more than the race fans listening. You know his his team. Here's that his competitors here that the people he's GonNa have to raise with and against here that. Yeah so you know I. I think we're down. I had so much success as we preached authenticity. I am not Chad. I talk a lot more A little bit easier going. I don't have perhaps the same sort of Straightforward fired up demeanor in the garage area. You know it's a different approach. which and it took me years of my career to appreciate that? That's okay I can be me. I can't be a better version of Chad. He is the first version jabs. The Guy Right right and I think that's that's what gave heart saying and that's what Denny's saying and that's what down I learned about each other's this this authenticity of let's celebrate what we have for. Strengths let's admit what we have for weaknesses Mrs. Let's truly admit it so we can work on it. And that's what I see out of the eleven. Is that the areas where I thought they were weak. Some some mental mistakes putting themselves sells behind during races. They are starting to dwindle. They're you know they they don't get behind is often. They run up front more they are more prepared in practice. The feedback feedback looks instantaneous. They they improve their cars so whatever magic that gave her and Danny have found together. It's working and it's going to be I said this for it's it's impressive so the Daytona five hundred is bigger than anything I've ever been a part of and I was thankful I was able to win one. As a crew chief in Denny has won two. Is the driver yet. I feel the Phoenix Wind was the biggest one of his career. And I don't hold that I qualified that because I don't want to you know people think it's easy to say. No no I know. Oh what. He's one I've seen the resume and I don't think it would have been that big. If he would have had a good Texas and came in twenty four points up in Phoenix. Dad No big deal. I mean you know it's a good win but we'll just put that kind of in the list but the fact that he self admittedly made a mistake at Texas by himself. There's no one else around him. Starting right away. It wasn't the track too slick. It wasn't this was not one time. Did you hear what the grass needs to be fixed at Tora. Micah all of the no ways that could have very easily cluttered the quotes they didn't he said. Yeah I messed up. If it's GonNa take a win then we'll win guaranteeing but more stating the fact that that he was going to bring everything thing he could bring to the table and I I was impressed. It was not straightforward. They lost track position. A couple times Martinsville they lost. It never regained it at Phoenix they lost it and he meandered ended his way back to the front and it was like he was mentally ready. When that's final stage flu he was gone? The first stages you saw good eleven but nobody jumped out and said going to be great and there was a moment in time they green flag that final stage and I think it was like okay no more guaranteed yellows no more points. No more BS. We are about one hundred and something laps from a trophy by and he drove to a twelve second lead. Yeah of course the Ghana or the gunman's problems had something to do that as well. I WANNA get to that but I. I just wanted to put a bill on on the game in tire decision. And as you mentioned I mean when that caution flew denny Hamlin stay composed he trusted in the fact that my teams put in two tires on when the guys who put four tires on and Gabe Hart said. Hey we he said pre-race Danny said this on her post race. showed it to Kyle Kristen. Dj that Gephardt told him. I might make the call that causes this race. But we're GONNA have a list of plays there were GonNa call if certain situations arise so gay partisan analytics guy doesn't long has a great story today on NBC. Sports DOT COM talks talks.

"I heard he had strep throat. Strep throat, the other week, what's what's his attendance Ben and Nate Bryan giving a minute I went, I think preface it with as a good worker when he's here and then they stopped and they went Sherry about fifty percent of the time. I said, well, he works three days a week ever talking about, no, no fifty percent of time. And I'm like, come on. You're just a hard ass who wrestled Montana, I I need. I need some pussy input Brian's with a why. No. I said, Brian won't eat anything Brian. What are we talking about. About half about fifty. All right. Well, color to guys who aren't impressed. You should impress, but I don't even judge anymore. I just want to know what people want out of life. What is what is the plan I would have grabbed onto this thing? I would have pitched a cot in the past by one of the race cars, like I'm not leaving and who wants some coffee, not. Get away with. Also, my play was always like, I'm going to see if I can get a year in before these people figure out a worthless piece of shit like a super lazy sack of shit. I'm gonna see if I can get in a good clean six months before my first him and I gotta go to Dennis on Monday, and then I'll just smoke pot on Monday, but I need to put in like, I need to get a good clean, six months to I fear. Then I can start with the outdoor festivals that go into Monday and Tuesday that right out of the gate. Oh. Thank you. Not in the first, not in the first two and a half months. Push it back a little bit. Now, do you look at this as a challenge? I'm going to change this. I don't care like. All right. This isn't placement efficient. Everyone gets to make their own rules, but understand you live in the same gravity. I live in and it's not going to be kind to you. So have it your way, do whatever you want show up when he won. Don't you up, but eventually this shell. It will manifest itself in a sort of negative thing, and it will affect you will not affect me temporarily like Nate's add like, well, sometimes we do need him and he's not. He's not here. So that's a temporary thing. But eventually it the big pictures is you not me, I'll I'll be right, but it's just weird. And it's also. Something I've realized two, there is no mount of talking. There is no mount of like, we're gonna sit down. We're gonna have a one on one. I'm going to explain to you that, hey, man, I'm middle age, your kid when I was a kid, here's what was going on. I know it's going through your head now, but I'm telling you ignore all those impulses come here. Impress some people in really focus, and you could be in five years running this place. You know, whatever. I realize none of those conversations ever ever were not only that it seems now like a lot of talking only does. It goes the other way, pushes the other way you want to be in the know. Yeah, the talking is not falling on deaf ears, volume, unresistant ears. Yeah, there's a lot of that. But in this in these cases where people are asking you for like employment or money or whatever, they will say anything in the moment because they're the ones who come to you for job or for money for car for whatever it is they'll sit there and you'll go, okay, but here's the UCS you may. But here here the terms, here's what we're going to be looking for, and then it's just quickly just unravels into who cares and who knows what it's all a part of just it's not him, it's I'm nineteen, and this is how this, how we roll and also for a lot of people. And I think we've all been there at least once at some point they're not asking for a chance to prove themselves to you. They're asking for a favor. That's the way it looks and all I want to say to everybody. Look no further than you know eighty six year old GM Corolla who asked me to buy bed because he doesn't have bed money, bed frame. There it is done room is way too small. I wouldn't make it, but I could break it off in his apartment those stairs, whether you're that old man or your young man, my nephew..

"That was like two hundred dollars that there's a thirteen hundred. We didn't buy new Furniture's. No, so anything. So I'm going to try to work this out where she does something hands me a tool. I don't know. So trying to get everyone like engage show, I said, go with your mom and go find carpet and go bring home. Some paints go, you know, get involved doing things. So anyway, when I was nineteen, I had a strong sense of, I gotta do something and. I don't know where opportunities you have. I don't. I don't know what the opportunities are. The the economy was insanely horrific. If you look to nineteen eighty three, you will see that that that the rates that I remember going home same as like an get nineteen percent on t. Bill. That's how crazy they Conway's nineteen percent on a three year. T-bill insane and everything was insane. There were no jobs anything and my parents, and that was a little before that. But there were no jobs I, there was no anything. And I was just like, I don't know how any of this is going to work, and that's why when I got the call to dig ditches for seven bucks an hour, I'm going gonna go in there. I'm going to press the shit out of these guys because it was a one day thing. We need you for one day to do this labor for one day, and I was like, you're going to definitely call me back tomorrow because I'm gonna show you how good I am. Anyway, smash cut to two thousand and eighteen in the new breed cats with the new world order. I had a. I got three nephews there all kind of finding their way and the door. One of their fin. I, I always kind of sit around and I wonder why my phone doesn't ring like, I don't know why people don't call and go, hey, I want your advice on something because you seem to have a few things for your out. No one really asked me. I don't. I get a couple little home improvement automobile advice once I don't get life advice, knowing that has me life questions or anything, and they don't ask for jobs or anything. And I'm like five was young and I knew this version me. I'd be one to check out the cars and wanting to know what's going on and how how get Volve and blah, blah, blah. So I had at some point, the phone did ring and it was my nephew, and I sit come over on a Friday. Tell me what you wanna do to, hey, we sat for a good hour and a half and talked and whatever. And I said, look, you're young, you're you're nineteen years old. Were making movies left and right around here we got projects coming out the wazoo. You stay close to Nate Adams over there and. By the time you're twenty five who knows? You could be running this this joint, but you know, but it's not gonna just happen. You have to, you have to do it, but it's stop fucking up. Our I will fire your ass. Well, that was a full five weeks after this conversation. So I said, but you know, you'll decide whether it's going to happen now. It's not gonna just happen because you're here. You're my nephew, you're gonna have to learn things. People are gonna have to like you. They're going to, you're going to handle responsibility, and but the good news is at nineteen hell twenty-five or still a kid, and you'll put in six years around here. And if you're good, you'll be having office, you'll be making documentaries and doing God knows what and who knows what the vine. So couple little run ins and tardy few times whatever. But I was shooting some stuff over there. And I said. To Nate Bryan should. What is my nephews batting average? Like what is he supposed to be here? Three days a week. I don't see him here all the time..

"He then they then loaded up the van of course with it and then didn't bring it back to the show then i walked into the shop psa and all the molds were in the shop laid out on the floor and i sit in everyone's tripping over them and i said why are all these modes on the floor and they said gary brought him here and sean told the take them back gary loaded them up into the van yeah and they said all right that sounds like a waste of time so far it's cost me eighty dollars or something but uh fine but now how's that explain them being on the floor uh and nate bryan needed the van to go film something and they had to put their equipment in it okay okay so now take this stuff and put it back in the van and then go do it that don't leave it in the van and their nine pickup trucks year could anyone of thrown it in the back and when brian was unloading it cody of dead uh uh we want to deal with answer would be on the fucking nabil up and talking shop it would have been on pay us marginally put in the back of rob struck a let rob drive it over here rush crashed what the fuck oh man yeah chris talk so now i'm going to the other shop and i'm going to say yes it's a nice eke are now backup the trailer hook it up the something put it back to the battery out and put it back in the trailer and then park the trailer again sean shouting somewhere as well that see you would probably look pretty good and we have that discussion but trailer is in close yeah and it buttons up in its watertight literally just park in there and leave it yeah okay yeah we can do that that's what i wanted but also its one could ass one could ask and then there's always robbers like.

"Britain's folded asked earnings and podcast i'm heroes nate bryan this is part two of our special episode this week speaking with several drivers during tuesday's preseason media tour as noted in the previous episode we took whatever time was available in the case of claim boyer that unfortunately wasn't much because some of the schedules fell behind on a very busy media day that's no one's fault it happens but i still wanted to include everyone that we got audio on regardless of the length of the conversation so that you can hear a sample of what some of these drivers mindsets and tones are entering 2018 so in this episode we have william byron eric all merola trevor bayne michael mcdowell aj allman dinger and clint boyer i also had a good conversation with defending series champion martin tricks junior seau stay tuned for that next week it'll be a full length episode lots of good insight that i think you enjoy into furniture a racing which martin playfully described as a band of misfits also on the rise in for guests are david smith these statistical guru who runs motorsports analytics kurt busch which continues are three year run of having the defending daytona five hundred winner each year as a guest on the podcast and i'm sure that we will have waugh tart who is of course the most recurring guest on the nascar nbc podcast the fact that i hope he is quite proud of i'm sure that steve you'll be stopping by before the 2018 season begins but now will get things started with this episode with william byron who talked about what it's like being the new kid in the cup series and already having some 'cause i stalker fans william byron you don't really struck me as someone who gets nervous based on your results of years than nascar but is there anything that you're concerned about going into your first cup season his you know i would say just the excitement in all the challenges that you face especially gone into it with my first race being the daytona five hundred that's going to be exciting and also nerveracking in itself and i think.
