"In that group yet again, teenagers a seven year old girl, she lost her life. Natalie Wallace, just playing on the sidewalk at 1/4 of July, a party gathering near her home outside She was shot and, ah, there are a lot of issues here. There are a lot of solutions that are being proposed. We talked about the home monitoring issues. We'll talk more about that with Sergeant Pete coming up, but I want to talk about this because you know, there's also this issue about interrupters. And what are they? And there's so much discussion around this now as people search for solutions. And what are what are interrupters. What did they do? And how effective has had been. Let's ask somebody who knows it's Tio Hardiman. He's been doing this for years. He's the executive director of violence. Interrupters, Teo. Thanks for calling into the show today. Appreciate it. Let me ask you though, this Tio straight out of the gate. What? How do you react to what you're seeing on the streets? Right now? We've had several straight weekends with a lot of problems, a lot of violence and a lot of innocent lives lost on our streets. Gun violence is Chicago's, although, although the place for example, it's not all gang related. You have lot of interpersonal conflict. The spirit of revenge is pretty high in Chicago. Right now, you have a lot of people living on the edge, like on a scale from 1 to 10. The anger skills wanted 10 people on 10 which means for any slide in facts, and people are willing to take a life. If you bump into somebody, some of some of the communities here in Chicago it's unfortunate, but it continues to happen. You know, I met with Superintendent Brown stopped in for a few minutes in regards China office, Um, services sort of Chicago police upon it in the area of training police officers on howto mediate conflicts on the front end and not showing up that might get killed all the time. I think it's very important, but that's what's going on with the shooting continued. Gun violence in Chicago is just all over the place. And, yeah, you know, I hear I hear more and more people is they bring up solutions they talk about Let's get more violence interrupters on the street. I'm hearing it when I watch National news. I'm hearing it here locally. I'm hearing it as a front and center and you've been doing this for an awful long time. Tell us what it is. You do, Teo and how effective it is. Is there any measure of his effectiveness? Without a doubt the the problem is this here, OK? I'm the creator of bouncing about this nice to me. The director found out what you know that everybody tell me it bounced, but they're not talking about Tio Hardiman. Starlets interrupted, and it's a method to my strategies. When I implement the bouncer up the initiative so far this year, we must have mediated 30 conflicts on a front and that could have turned deadly. That's bloody conflict. 30 live and what I would like to do it with people when they admit and violence interrupters they have. They have to think about Teo hard and maybe cause if you don't have to create a overseeing the efforts did you make feel quite a bit and that's what's going on. Right now. The Department of Justice evaluated the effectiveness of the violence interrupters a few years ago and show that we get results when I was his C spine and let me bring you up to date, the 2020 right now I work in the community known at the West Haven community near West Area around the United Center. We've gone like 45 something days without without a shooting over there because I've been reaching out to the young guys in the area. They have a co existence ruled over there right now, in the midst of all the violence going around going on in the city, we've been pretty cool over there. You know, we're taking it one day at a time. But there's been a 45 days of stretch without any shoes and killers in that area so far. Well, that's that Zohra news. So is it is it the funding is that you need more funding to have more interrupters and more neighborhoods. Is it the effective implementation of the program? What would you need in order to really Make an even bigger impact. You don't need funding, you know, to a degree, but I would like to really meet with Mayor Lori Lightfoot. And just give us some advice. I'm not looking forward to fund me. I'm not looking for a job. I just want to give her some advice because I truly believe that they're going about things the wrong way. Let me explain if you have 1200 options in a community, extra police officers, you have a lot of programs in the community. But if you don't have the right and 10 of them being in the community, other than just President, you're still going to miss your mark, the important to understand what's going on underneath the concrete jungle. I'm somewhat like all you have to intercept whispers in order to get on top of stopping the shooting on the front end, So just having presence is not enough. We need officers that are fully trained and know how to detect and prevent conflicts on the front end, So that's what I'm strengthened. And that's what I would like to do for the good city of Chicago. So I'm hoping that the men would actually meet with me one day, but if not I plan to keep working anyway, but it's like having Michael Jordan stumbled on the bench in Chicago, but not bringing me to the table. Yeah. I mean, it certainly seems as if you have shown success in this area cast. You know, I heard the police Superintendent David Brown. He gave a news conference couple hours ago, and he talked about how the types of crimes we're seeing right now, largely driven by young men and gang violence that those are some of the toughest ones for police to deal with. Because so often no one cooperates. No one. You're there already knows who's behind it. Nobody turns anybody in. They deal with it themselves on the streets, and they deal with retaliation themselves within their own sort of bubble. And what you do is you try to get into trying in front that because you know, too right. You figure out who's done what and who's going to be retaliating and and that's where someone like you steps steps in Right without a doubt and with him. Also, we have a model in Chicago. Nobody talks about when the Kwan Maidana was basically killed by Jason Van Dyke, the police officer know everybody shut the city down. And then we thought there has been a 85% reduction in police involved killings of after American man in Chicago if we would take that same motto and apply that model to regard system sustain. Demonstrations staying protest against gun violence in Chicago We might get somewhere where we can see a 15 70% reduction and then allow my Vulcan eruptions, the work the streets, you know, instep, the West Birds, immediate, more conflict. We may be a big reduction, but right now It's hard to just blame it on what the superintendent is talking about, because Chicago had a game problem for the last out a way back to the Al Capone days, and from the 19 seventies, up to 2020. We've had a lot of homicides in Chicago. But there was some years there when I was directing ceasefire that we get the homicide down 25 cent in Chicago and also we reduce some of homicides in some community by 80%. When when we were woken. When we had a full of team in other ways out, Okay, So that's what I'm recommending right now. For the city of Chicago. You only have a few seconds here. But I do want you to weigh in on this rather prickly issue, But I've seen you be very out. Spoken about it. You're you're calling on black lives matter. To use some of their force and their power and their voice to get more involved in this type of of shootings of young Children of black Children in general, gunned down in gang violence. Not everybody agrees with that. But you feel pretty strongly about that Black lives matter. So so being at a black lives matter, all lashing mounted in.
