Fresh update on "natalie portman" discussed on Piecing It Together Podcast

"Closer with were two, thousand, four And E yeah. Those two and it was kind of in the wrong I think that's why. I. Remember. That was a time where just like a lot of these movies were coming out that we're doing different things with relationships and also showing different characters in these relationships like Natalie character in garden state kind of has inklings of like Clementine. Like not I wouldn't wanna see crazy but just a little out there and quirky and showing us a different side to like the you know the ROM coms of like the perfect. A partner or or girl who has everything figured out it's like I love that these characters like Clementine and Natalie. Portman Karen Garden State didn't have everything figured out. There were just kind of showroom and getting through life and then also a coincidentally Natalie Portman also closer. which was one of my favorites as well. just like the I don't even think I could understand it when I watched it. When I was in high school I didn't understand why I loved it so much but the dynamic between all four of them and like the mixing of their relationships and just how complicated love. And how you can hurt people as well. I think that just kind of reminds me of Eternal Sunshine is spotless mind because you can love someone a lot but you can also hurt them. which is dark I know but sorry no absolutely. Yeah. I just think it's interesting like. You know. So many people to you know different different Areas in film you know but man, do I love the two thousands that? So many frigging great movies so good. Yeah. So. What do you what point do for your specific first one? Hundred as a summer. I think that there is some sort of time for a timeline going on with that because we go back in the days of What's his. I'll just just leads character I can't remember but. You know he's going through the relationship of sort of like in the in in Joel's character where I think he might have also been thinking that Clementine. Any says it in the movie was going to save him which if you're thinking someone is GonNa save you then that's probably not gonna be. You gotta go into your relationship like as a whole person, and then you'll come together and make hopefully something even better. But no one is getting completely unlike Jerry Maguire said you should complete yourself. So and that's something you learn as you go on or maybe you don't learn it and that's why. I don't.

Natalie Portman responds to Rose McGowan's criticism of her Oscar nod to female directors

"Yesterday we talked about the fact that rose McGowan went after Natalie Portman because Natalie Portman wore a Cape add to the Oscars on which she had embroidered the names of a lot of women directors and apparently she believed were snubbed for the Oscars and rose McGowan as we mentioned yesterday called her out and said you just this lame actors he's pretending to care and you really don't because you had a production company where you don't even higher any female doctors except yourself yeah start walking your talk you're not work or super woke you're right Natalie Portman right so yesterday we were we didn't know how Natalie Portman or if Natalie Portman would respond to that and she now has and she wrote a big giant Facebook post about it are not a Facebook post I can't remember where she actually no she just made a statement to E. news and she actually agreed with me down essentially saying that it's inaccurate to call her brave for wearing that Kate she's as brave as a term I more strongly associate with actions like those of the women who've been testifying against Harvey Weinstein the last few weeks under incredible pressure it's true I've only made a few films with women in my long career I've only gotten the chance to work with female directors a few times and then she lists some examples unfortunately the unmade films I've tried to make our a ghost history and she ended her statement by saying so what I wanna say is I've tried and I will keep trying well I have not yet been successful I'm hopeful that we are stepping into a new day but my Cape is really pretty like really pretty on the right car bad expense and I am so gorgeous you guys so pretty so anyway sure how that will count by handing out that's where we are

Some 2020 Oscars Fashion Faves

"What you missed today. In the world of Celebrity News Oscar's edition low woah eight. We're GONNA get to the awards show and we're going to get to the after parties but first we have to talk about is a fast Sean. Okay we got to kick things off talking about fashion through a lot of great looks this year. I think I watched so many of those dumb slow motion like he news fashion camera things. I think now everything I look at is in slow motion. My eyes broke watching. So many of those stylized Slo mo videos or whatever anyway as far as getting ready moments I loved Zach braff posting pictures of his girlfriend Florence. PUGH getting ready. He had some like cute block and white right shots of her like with her dress on and getting ready at his house. I'm assuming she doesn't have her own house in la yet because she's she's new anyway. Did notice this in Zach Braff instagram story. In addition to posting pictures of his girlfriend Florence. PUGH getting ready. He also posted a picture of a mirror with like a cute little a post. It note reminder on it at said take your tickets. Like as if he's trying to remind foreign spewed not forget her tickets to the Oscars anyway. It seems cute normal but then I looked closer at the shot and he has used three different. Post it notes to post this message on a mirror. It's like the worst to nonsensical usage of post. It notes I've ever seen it's like he's using to post it notes in lieu of like tape. I guess but it just it looks bonkers. I highly recommend you go check out the photo of it. I'M GONNA put it on her social media accounts so you can see anyway so I guess she remembered you bring your tickets because she did show up Florence pugh or a great dress was like green and had all these tiers layers to it. It was spaghetti strap at had a little title bout. I loved it other fashion that I really liked Natalie. Portman war a Dior Cape that had embroidered on it all the names of the female female directors who were not nominated which I thought was kind of a cool statement spike Lee were a purple and yellow suit with the numbers. Twenty four stitched on the front and back in honor of the late Kobe. Bryant Kristen Wig wore this big red dress that made her kind of look like a delicious piece of lasagna. Like go all your red hot piece of uncooked LASAGNA. Pasta it was it was great. I loved it. Geno Monet had a good look. She were this like metallic hooded dress. US that I really liked. I love an actresses like bring kind of a met gala fashion vibe to the red carpet like they go over the top. I think that's fine like if if you're GONNA be famous and go to the Oscars like why not have some fun with it. You know like why. Why just look like hot and glamorous when you could look like hot hot glamorous and absolutely crazy speaking of like big fashion moments? I also loved Sandra. Oh's dress you had this giant and philosophy glittery like dusty rose gown. It was awesome in it was it just. I like when a gown takes up a lot of space in and Sandra. Oh she took up a lot of space in to me. That's fashion. Is it weird. That my favorite look of the night might have been from the child actress. Sophia Ed butters. Who played the little girl in once upon a time in Hollywood? I know it's weird. I don't like love that my favorite look was worn by a child child star. But it's true. I don't know what that says about my fashion taste but I thought she looked great. She had this like all pink. High Collar are button up. But like Poofy pantsuit thing. It's honestly so cute and chic. It's very age appropriate too. I liked and it. It's it's like a fairytale princess who is going to work as an accountant or something. It's a great is a great vibe amend to

The Life of Mike Nichols

The Life of Mike Nichols

"Ask Carter and Sam Kashmir join us now they wrote together an oral history of Mike Nichols it's called life isn't everything. Mike Nichols as remembered by one hundred and fifty of his closest friends Sam Ash. Thanks for being here. Just thanks for having US thank you. What was was the genesis of this project? Well after Mike's Death I was at Vanity Fair and wanted to do an oral history as much as we can get away with the magazine and ask had worked as a PA.. With Mike. And I knew him mm somewhat and so I thought it best to join forces and so we did this for the magazine originally and it was so interesting and there was so much material that it just kind of presented itself as a book kind of instantly. As soon as we saw together in the magazine they must have been painful to have to cut. Had it down to magazine size well. The piece was originally assigned at six thousand. Words ran at eleven thousand and still not a word practically about his theater career hear about his time at the compass. Players is a founding member of Improv. I mean there's so much still on the table Ash you're very lucky person having worked as the PA.. What did you work on? I worked on Charlie Wilson's war. That was my first job out of college. I was so upset on hangs Julia Roberts. What was that often? Yes Oh right. Of course. It was a big movie so very often. You felt very distant from where the the real real action was taking place but still. I really feel blessed who've been able to be as close as I was. So you mentioned Charlie. Wilson's war my immediate reaction. Shen is Oh my God. That's Mike Nichols. Also the thing that I think people don't even fully appreciate now is just how incredibly accomplished. He was and for so long so if we could just kind of begin with his I think I real fame fame was with Nichols and may but before we go into each of those stop. Just take us through because I think people may be associated him with the graduate and a couple of other major projects. But let's just list some some of them so people have a sense. Well there was the great success of the Nichols. and May Elaine. May and Mike Nichols as a comedy team. which kind of transformed formed Comedy really and Mike as Director. He and Neil Simon joined forces and he really kind of in a way. Reinvented invented Simon. For Neil Simon. You know with barefoot in the park and the odd couple and as of film director his first film was the Richard Richard Burton Elizabeth Taylor. Who's afraid of Virginia? Woolf which frank rich other people believed to be the maybe the best reputation of a of a stage play for film ever the graduate which was second film his second film shocking. JFK transformative you know and Oscar worthy. And then there's all all the stage work Tom Stoppard's the real thing David Raves hurly-burly streamers. Yeah camelot and S- Pamela camelot idle. I mean it's kind of prodian extraordinary range of of gifts that that he I mean. He Directs Spam Lot. I I think two years after doing angels in America for HBO. I mean that's range. I don't WanNa go too much into his early life by. I think it's important to point out that this was a person who arrived here. Didn't speak English. Not as first language goes to the University of Chicago right he meets Elaine. May let's start there. What was it that made that pairing so extraordinary? What did they do? You said that they revolutionized comedy Elaine may was the dangerous genius that entered Mike Nichols life and and changed him she was kind of a combustion engine and he was the steering wheel a little bit. Steve Martin told us the first time. When you listen to those records those bits or you know the sketches? which is he said that the that I heard irony brock kind of modernity to comics situations and things that comedians did not go? Nya such as the cost of funerals was is the time of Jessica Mitford the the American way of death. And you know I mean these are weighty subjects adultery a- adultery right the previous generation of comics from the fifties where people who came from Vaudeville and the Borscht Belt Nichols and may had a theater background around. And you know both the classical repertory but also as Improv actors and by the way they're also both at analysis and brought a level of psychological acuity to comedy that really hasn't been seen before let's just a clip of them from that period some day Arthur. You'll get married and you'll have suit of your own and honey when you do. I only pray that they make us suffer the way you. That's all I pray to mothers. Okay mom thanks for calling you very sarcastic. I'm doing my best now. You call me on on the telephone I me. I'm sorry I'm sorry that bothered you and look I didn't make you feel bad. Are you kidding I feel awful. Oh honey if I could believe that I'd be the happiest mother it's true. What do you think I feel crummy Arthur honey? Why don't you call me sweetheart? That's the one bit. That's kind of in a way close to auto biography at least for Mike that was sort of his mother in a way and and he had a difficult very difficult relationship with her. Are you know after the death of his physician. Father they were really plunged into poverty into serious poverty in in New York. He I used to have to go in the olden days to the Museum of TV and radio to watch these old clips. But now I I'm imagining that. You can see all of this on Youtube. Yeah there's a lot of great stuff and Youtube I encourage people to also look up there The award for total mediocrity that they did at the Emmys when you're in the nineteen fifties so that's just breathtaking. I just actually making fun of their own mirror. You know I mean they're making fun of show business with a successful right away. They were both part of this. Very heavy kind of avant-garde guard group called the compensator in Chicago and the two of them just clicked as their manager. Jack rollins later said there. They were like ham and eggs. They were a local will hit first then they came to New York. He signed them up his clients started booking them at local nightclubs and they were hit right away and then they started going non Jackpot and omnibus and they were hit nationally. So yeah it was. It was really just like that. It was that quick. How does it get from that to? Who's afraid of Virginia? Woolf well well they had a great success Nichols and may on Broadway at the Golden Theatre was an evening with Nichols in May ostensibly directed by Arthur Penn.. You know but not really and Elaine was just sort of tired of doing it and in a way was the comedic version of of the Beatles. Breaking up people were just. I just chop fall in. You know it's tragic. Yes yes yeah. It was kind of a loss in a way They would wind up working together. Other eventually you know as a screenwriter and director but but Mike it kind of put him in in the wilderness for a while He was really at see if we rely on a little bit. When he's got that evening on Broadway with a lame the theater? They were in shared an alley with a theater where her camelot was on stage with Richard Burton and they would kind of hang out after after the show and that's how he kind of got to know him and it was. It's essentially through that meeting Richard in that alley and threw him Liz. They were the ones who hired for Virginia Woolf. When you think about the collaborators he had the people he got to work with you mentioned Arthur panel the you know lately Richard Burton Elizabeth Taylor Dustin in Hoffman Jewels pfeiffer on carnal knowledge? It's just you know on and on Meryl Streep the biggest names and your subtitle is is Mike Nichols as remembered by hundred and fifty of his closest friends. Did He. Frequently form friendships during these professional collaborations was. He's one of those the people that everybody felt like they knew. And we're close to make exactly this actors and and many was writers really kind of fell in love with him. I mean we could have called the book seduced by Mike Nichols you know Natalie. Portman really wept recalling. Her work with Mike Sue now. Yeah and that was much later and the closer yes. Yes but also they did stage work together so they were totally devoted to him. I I mean Tom Stoppard. For example said I think his advice memorial you know he thought to himself who is there to to write for he so he was kind of an Avatar to all of these. She's tremendously gifted complicated. People and the friendships were very deep. And Very Real Maureen Dowd. Your colleagues said that he was a null coward figure with the Jersey Kaczynski past and unlike a lot of other people who had a really horrible childhoods he did not kind of wear it on his sleeve and he we've talked about it and didn't particularly want to spend a lot of time thinking about it and I I mean I think this is kind of the key to his career. Longevity Eddie is that he was. Somebody really always wanted to be living in the moment. And kind of looking forward to the next project even up until the end of his life when he had several things that were in progress including masterclass terrence. McNally's play that he was gonNA adapt for. HBO With Meryl Streep. Yeah I mean in a way. Our title is taken from a a model of Mike's life isn't everything but it's kind of a misnomer because it was everything to him. You know in a way I mean he could be difficult to and and some of the people in the booker occur quite open about yes. That Emma Thompson is one right exactly Thompson who who adored him. You know said we're not talking about some saint here so you know and in fact Mike toward the end of his life felt that he had been cruel to people and had betrayed others. You know but he did develop a music also about someone who sort of as much of a genius as he was you know he was also complicated difficult cat and felt like there were people to apologize to. Some people presumably wouldn't talk to you Elaine. May of course wouldn't what about Diane Sawyer and were there other people who you pursued and just said you know what no now. We did approach. Diane we wouldn't have done this actually without her been addiction you know and she gave us the same response that initially initially Sam Beckett gave to digital bear you know which is. I'm not going to stop you but I'm also not going to help you all that much. But when push came to shove and we needed the people such as Meryl Streep she was helpful behind the scenes and Elaine. She did. Give us a blurb. Although we didn't use it and the blurb facetiously officiously said well I I would tell you all I know. But they're going to pay me millions of dollars to write my memoirs something. You'll never do you know. She meant it as kind of a joke before before we go one final question what do you each of you. Thank was Nicholas's greatest work and then also so perhaps a personal favourite may be less known or just something new especially leaden. And why. Let's start with you ash. I would say probably the graduate. It's not the most original choice but I just have seen the movie so many times and I think that it it just has held up so much better than a lot of other youth movies of the time that it was sort of lumped in with that plus the the comedy albums is sort of where my original enthusiasm for him started. But you know I I think catch twenty. Two for example is a movie that has not really gotten. It's do. I think it's actually kind of a brilliant movie that was overshadowed by Mash at the time though it is I see no reason why the existence of Mash prevent people from enjoying it today not an easy novel to adapt to know and but I think him and Buck Henry and we did a credible job adapting it. Sam will I mean. It's so hard to choose. My mother would choose working girl in or Silkwood you know an but are you. Seeing your mother would be wrong. My mother never wrong But for me it's you know the stage work is kind and of extraordinary. I mean the Philip Seymour. Hoffman death of a salesman at the end of life using that was really just is an extraordinary unearth accomplishment. Really it brought him Full Circle Because that streetcar with the two original productions that changed his life really all right. I'm hoping that this interview. If nothing else forces everyone to go to youtube everyone to go and stream every single thing that Mike Nichols did that was available. He was such an incredible credible talent ash. Carter Sam cash. Thank you so much for being here. Thank you so much thank your new book is called. Life isn't everything. Mike Nichols as remembered by one hundred

I have I have sat next next to Andy in this room for the entire time that we've been here and he has pretty much never not had a vape pen in his hand hand awhile late last four years like once in a while. He'll put it in his pocket for a minute but pretty much all day every day. The vape pen is in fan since vape pens have been available and he has had a pen in his hand and I've been wanting to stop for a while but Kevin kept saying why why it looks so cool uh-huh so cool in fact at one particularly grumpy moment in the last three days I believe Kevin said can't he just vape again. Kevin is so supportive around you when you're trying to quit something. Dr Phil says you don't quit in a habit replace it okay so don't go gambling. Oh God yes. Let's just go to well. Were Kevin Loses his temper. That's right when he gets angry. How's how's Laurie happy is. She's happy that I quit happy that he's not home right right now to work weekends. We're all trying to share time with Andy there. You go a lot of stuff to talk anyone. Would you like to start with Let's talk about Natalie Portman. Okay delightful actress won the Academy Black Swan One. I believe that's correct yes and like we should get department. Yeah we would've podcast needed research department. I get one for the show show and then we can help us with the politics sweet smart love Rim Long Island from Long Island wish beautiful beautiful beautiful tolls and we were lucky to have her around the time that it was announced that she is going to be the new thor lady. There's a lady door which is kind of cool that is not a big marvel SORTA. Kevin you tell us I just have never heard of or is it going to be his partner. Don't know great. We'll find out that by marriage or a sister. You know maybe maybe they start out not liking each other. They don't like each other and then he shows her his hammer. Yes and then she likes. I don't think so what could be could be you know here's one of the things I liked about Natalie Portman when she was on the show. She showed she showed a `Paparazzi photo. Oh of herself eating giant eating giant Perito and she was like you know they always get all these shots on the red carpet or they take shots at me here. They Take Jake shots me. There and I don't know who that person is. I don't recognize that person but this is Mrs me. This is me just like eating eating a Burrito so that's what's on your DVR is and you can check it out and she's in this movie called Lucy in the sky loosely based. I guess yes on a female astronaut right right who you could say she gets a little obsessed with a boyfriend and she or maybe he's an ex boyfriend at this point and she gets in her car. Yup and she drives. I believe from Houston Houston. I this is what I'm going to guarantee you. This is half right and she drives across the country to Florida to see him and made it kidnap him to confront him. I'm sure while she was on her way. She just wanted to see him and then when she got there she thought it would be a good idea to put them in the trunk. and she decides that she needs to get there urgently. She can't really afford to pull over and stop between Houston and Florida so what she does is. She puts a diaper on so as things happen while she's driving. She doesn't have to interrupt your train and and when this when this story broke a few years ago it was memorable memorable because they were she was an astronaut and like you just think of astronauts not sort of behaving this way and then the diaper was like a fact in the story that really really caught people's attention so she's making this movie loosely based on it. The screenwriter decided to leave the diaper part of the story out of the film bad idea and people do not stop asking Natalie Portman about why there's no. There's no diaper isn't isn't that a great question to answer but I heard the movies great so the movie supposed to be great. She's an amazing actress. Here is leaf Natalie. Portman is an Oscar winner. She isn't Oscar Oscar in Black Swan. Yes believe we just talked about that. A little while ago. During the best folded just pulled a black swan. Yeah Yeah folded. Im indie head sitting on Andy's couch. Today's maybe that's not the same since the knee. I really am not I'm half half a man but here's a clip of Ellen and Natalie Portman Chatting Lucy in the sky. This is a true story right. It's an inspired heard by it's inspired by the sort of astronaut triangle love triangle that we heard about in the tabloids but it's it's not really telling of those people it was kind of took that idea and said what happens when someone comes back from space and it has to adjust to life on earth yeah because I would imagine that would be tricky to come back and you know have this reality when you kind of have a different perspective. Have you ever wanted to go into space oh I would love to. I think it's the coolest really really. I actually had a weird thing in Montecito. Once we were going this is where we both reside sometimes and we we're going to Oliver's you know the Vegan restaurant is so good and then all of a sudden the sky like lit up and this craft was like lynching and I was like the aliens coming. This is is really happening and on the street everyone was just standing looking up and it was SPACEX was landing there shuttles at that air force base there. You had any minute that we had aliens aliens in Montecito. I mean I was kind of exciting. Yes you worked with Pignataro my pal. I really love her. She's wonderful. She was so funny funny because I had that wig that you saw lip and so she'd always be like it's like looking in a mirror. Every time you're walking towards the same cut not really astronaut hair. She's got the cool version. I've got the lake this Dorothy Hamill version. There's nothing wrong with that. First of all you should explain because the the the original original story was that this woman drove across country to kind of confront for her or kidnap depending on version well there was deaf in the car car that it appeared like kidnapping her boyfriend her boyfriend and his new girlfriend and she wore a diaper so that she didn't have to stop on the way and we didn't do that in the right and everyone's like where's the diaper yeah very lake. Everyone's really upset to not see the diaper bill. You could actually say I was wearing it. You just didn't see it so that ends a controversy. That's next time so good line. Just say you've learned. I'm wearing when right now good. That's you don't even know what's happening. Natalie Portman is wearing a diaper right. Now everybody news do you ever struggle with late leaks what poise pads now but that would be a good spot back you you. Y See this is why he's the funny Guy Mr Funny Funny Funny. How crazy is that. We have an adult diaper commercial missile and he ever struggle to find exciting foolproof recipes that fit your diet plus fresh ingredients to make them happen if I would say what my I single biggest struggle as it would be that but then it's no longer because I found a company called plate..

Natalie Portman denies Moby's claims they dated

"Natalie Portman actress, so Moby bragged in his book that he dated Natalie Portman at one point, he, he said, in kind of a humble brag, he said here, I was in my dressing room in this movie star was flirting with me. She claims she never flirted with them. He was creepy to her. She claimed he was a creepy older man who behaved inappropriately with her. He said, I was twenty she said in his book, he said he was thirty three and she was twenty. He said, I was twenty I definitely wasn't I was a teenager. I just turned eighteen there was no fact checking hammers publisher he goes on to say, no, no, they dated any says, I don't know why she would say such when we in fact dated, and we kissed under the trees at Harvard University, and he smuggled with her, and her dorm, and then once she fell asleep, he removed her arm and went back to his hotel. So I guess they didn't do anything more. Have you heard music? Poppy happy. He's do you who do you believe here? And is this another case of we were just talking about some guy will say, no, I was mentoring her, and I was being kind can be she said no use being creepy. They both have their own interpretation of this, Joe. Well, I think this sounds well, Mobis known vegan activist. So I think is lower testosterone affected his memory. Is real beta male moved to think I thought we were dating. Now, now she just being nice to you clown, used to play guitar in punk band called that can commandos. That's right. Yeah. Vatican. Yeah. If you really want it, look, I guess, this book, he had an interaction with Lana del Rey before she was famous, apparently trying to lure her back to his place to play the piano, and she shut him down. Really good. And even the expert he's like, I couldn't tell shoes, insulting me or not. It's like dude that verbally throwing a drink in your face. Well, tell you when you years ago, if you a rock musician and you got famous part of, you know, the fringe benefits of being a rock musician was young gals in coming back to your dressing room. I mean that's and Moby was trying to ride into that. But he's, you know, he's got admit the, he's the guy him and all his friends brought in this modern era. Yeah, but, you know, okay, fine groupies, but now, he's shooting, a little high with Natalie Portman, they're, you know, okay mic. So I think so of him, he said, I'm sure she was. But it doesn't mean she was sexually attracted to him, or even if she was it doesn't mean as I remember being twenty and you know, you could be attracted to a guy in his thirties, but, you know, doesn't mean you would hook up with him. That's like Super Bowl to old, I'm doing the math here. He said in his book, he was thirty three she was twenty and they dated and he talked about. She was twenty she was in my dressing room. She was flirting with me. She. She said I was young. I was barely eighteen fifty three. She's thirty seven. I'm doing the math here that sixteen years if he was thirty three she was seventeen. Even his own story where he gets to. So we were back to her dorm. No, not even your own recollections. It don't go back to the dorm when you're definitely thirty three year olds should not be going to the dorm Eero. Yeah. No. I mean today, really are like fifteen to completing that's a good point. You made though because I remember when I was in my twenties and someone who is thirty. You couldn't believe that they were spry enough to walk like you don't have any conception. Oh, yeah. There. I mean, come on, when you first in the city and you're working with other comics. And you think in yourself how old is guy like thirty? Yeah, you still at it. He's real. Meanwhile, cut to me, I'm like, you know. Late thirties. And I'm still going, I finally get by get booked on Conan. I was like

Rockstar Movies - The Genre of the Moment

"First we're going to talk about other rockstar films joined today by my ringer colleague. And really one of the best writers about Rockstars in the world Lindsay's all Lindsey. Hey, how's it going? I'm doing really well. Thank you for joining me. You know Lindsey right before we started taping the show we were talking about what makes a kind of rockstar movie successful. And you know, there are two different kinds of movies. Like this her smell falls into the completely fictionalized. But inspire. By category, where the characters in it exists in a realm that seems familiar, but isn't real Becky something seems like Courtney love, but she is not Courtney love. And then of course, there's the bohemian rhapsody ask bio pic version that, you know, attempts to tell the truth and often is more false than the movie that is completely fictionalized for you, which makes us successful rockstar movie in which of those do you prefer. I tend to prefer the ones that are creating this whole other world that doesn't exactly exist in in the actual music universe answer, the non bio-pic ones, which are these movies that have come out in the past year that all kind of fall into that category. Pretty much all are those sorts of movies. But those tend to be my favorites. Yeah. Why do you think? So right now, we're in this moment, and you writing a piece about this on the site this week where teen spirit is being released this week. It's maximum galas story of popstar pile fanning. A star is born last October. The one. Her smell. No, I don't wanna quit backs. Lux Brady Corbett portrait of a pop star in the aftermath of nine eleven starring Natalie Portman. The aforementioned bohemian rhapsody wire all of these movies happening right now. Do you think I really don't know? I mean, one really interesting parallel that I put it out to you earlier is that each of those movies, I guess with the exception of her smell sort of are directed by male actors like people that we primarily identifies actors before directors. So that that is just interesting to me in general of of people like they seem to be wanting to say something about performance and stardom, but through the proxy of generally younger or more famous woman, and that's just a very strange parallel that I'm not sure what's going on there. But I think there's a sense right now with social media that sort of anyone can become a pop star. I mean, we. To crossover into the music field week. I will not ex- right now who this viral star who just has the number one song in America overnight sensation because he was able to use social media into becoming famous. So I think there's this sense right now that pop stardom is easier to achieve and and that if you have a certain idea or machinery behind you that you can just not your fingers and become a pop star. I do not think it's that easy. And that's the issue. I have with some of these movies and the way that they conceive of twenty-first-century pop cultural stardom, but I do think there's that sense that if anyone can become a pop star on the internet, then so can Natalie Portman are we can imagine her in that role or L fanning or something like that? There's this almost anyone can do it notion in the air right now that I think is contributing something to this. You know, we're gonna talk about some of our favorite. Versions of these kinds of movies. I think we should say that for the most part the bio pic more so than the original story tends to be more successful and the massive success of bohemian rhapsody, which is I would say an abnormality. But also indicative of kind of where music movies may be going. I think sets aside the fact that like there's something kind of dull and bland and Oscar is about the bio pic in the original story. I feel like creates a whole new world of creation for us. You know, what are some of your favorites from that John rea-? I mean, I have a very long. A couple. Yeah. The first one will I kinda was thinking in terms of these movies that have come out recently almost each of them. I sort of had in mind, oh, I like X movie from the past better, and in thinking of vox lox, I was comparing it a lot to Todd Haynes velvet goldmine.

The Rotterdam Film Festival: Champion of the avant garde

"Film festival has been showcasing the challenging the fresh on the unconventional treasures cinema has to offer. It has a reputation for being the most serious and of film this year is no exception. It's director says people are hungry for something which is different from the ordinary something that gives them the question rather than the answer. Joining me now from Rotterdam is a film critic Tara Judah welcome back to multiple twenty four. Tara. Everyone says it's a serious film festival. What does that mean? That's a great question. I mean it serious insofar as they take films seriously. But actually, I think there's a lot of good humor in good fun in the festival as well. This year, there's been a lot in terms of the themes around feeling so it's kind of hashtag feel I f f and the idea of that is to kind of look into how we relate to human stories through the feelings that cinema can give us absence has been a really. A big theme. So there's been a low around kind of spy themes surveillance. What happens when the state's watching knew when things on there who stories don't get told whose voices a quietened? So this year the theme really has been I guess serious. But also playful I would say there's a playful element to the festival as well. Is there any intention that any of these films our ever intended for the mainstreamers is this the Sigler celebration of of of the margins of cinema. Actually, I think the festival does really well is straddled both of those extremes. So they do have the kind of big films in the sense of Brady Quebec's new Volks looks which stars Natalie Portman, you know, there's the new Clinton e film highlife, which has got Robert Patterson, and it said, they're all some of those big headline films here. But it does also look very much to the God. And I think what the festival does very well is to champion the God. So it's moving from cinema as a mainstream form of entertainment all the way through. To it's kind of more moving image, gallery installation. And that's another thing the festival does is that it also has installations alongside the film program. What I found fascinating is it this film festival has been around for nearly fifty years. How is it managed to sustain so long? I think that's a great question. And I think some of these festivals reading they really do have a legacy and part of that is to do with the fact that they all building and identity Rotterdam really does have its own identity. Like, you say there is something about how seriously it takes cinema. But also how much it's willing to champion films from all across the world. So even though, you know, there's been, you know, obviously American films in the mix as well as fantastic remaining film. I do not care if we go down in history as Burian, and that's a really amazing title, but you know, the films that you wouldn't necessarily get to see in other places, and I think a lot of programs critics and film fans know that if they come to wrote to them they going to want to something that they might not see elsewhere. So one thing tower that if you didn't get a chance to go to them, but you fancied. Enjoying something from the festival. What would you what would you recommend we try and help out? So I would say there's a couple of films that are just absolutely must not MRs. I've I've just seen a fantastic Swedish film called CoCo de coca. And this is a kind of fairy tale nightmare, which I really do think. We'll get picked up internationally. So I think that will be a chance to see it. And it's all about the kind of cycles of grief, and how they descend into the innocence of hell, it's absolutely hilarious. But also, really frightening mixes Joan brilliantly, and I'd say definitely lookout for

"But it's like what I don't understand what's happening here. Right. There's the one with. Kristen Stewart where she's like, you know, like going through these like a strips of strips of fabric that are wrapping around her body, and it's like slow motion running around the Natalie Portman one. What would you do for love? Yeah. She's data Cupo those and Keira Knightley did a few of those with it just to make no, Johnny Depp. Where he's like burying something in the middle of the desert, and there's like a buffalo. I get it. Right. And he's all dressed up in Johnny Depp, scarves, and stuff on his head and glasses. You know, look with a vast looking like, Johnny Depp, burying something in the Julia Roberts abilities, the breakthrough walls. Those are controversial those are just dumb. But for some reason, I I like those ridiculous. I really like those ridiculous Cologne and perfume commercials that make no sense the Natalie Portman one kind of drives me what's the song that they use in that one. It's actually a pretty popular song that they use net commercial. Yeah. I don't know what it is. But it's like, it's a it's a song that I think was was a big hit a female artists. Saying it they use that in in the video. And then he asked the CSI, right? Yeah. So the. It chandelier. Right. Okay. Yeah. Chandelier by SIA, which is which is interesting because in. Vox lox. Natalie. Portman sing SIA songs in it. So they're like a connection between the two of them. Now. Wow. All right. Let's take a break. We got more controversial commercials to talk about here. "Hi, everybody. I'm Peter Travers. Welcome to popcorn where we tell. You. What's happening at the movies? And there's a favorite movie mine out now called vox lox, which stars my guest Natalie Portman as sort of hip swinging swaggering really handful of Iraq star. So just like you, right? Yeah. They finally found you, and they said might yourself. Vulgar, extreme self seen. You do many things I've seen you be complete psycho meltdown. Ballerina black swan, and I've seen you play different. But I've never seen you like this think you, so what was the attraction of this? Because you've never done anything quite like it. Yes. That was definitely a big attraction that it was just this role. That was so. Specifically written in had this kind of extreme character. But very true character. I thought in it. But also in the middle of film that I felt was very relevant to the moment. We're living in without being about like directly about what's going on right now. But has this mix of pop culture and violence and the news cycle and just this very kind of tragically absurd moment that we live in. Well, it's that. But maybe we should start for those people who don't know who your character is Celeste because there's so many things involved in this about you don't come into later in the movie right RAFI, Cassidy plays your character. I I think has is wonderful young actress who plays Celeste for the first half of the film when the it's sort of the birth of the pop star out of this sort of tragic event that happens, and she writes a song in response to it that makes her this kind of star. And then the second part of the film's where I come in. And I play Celeste wants she's already been established as a as a pop star and had her like Lowe's, and then is coming back, and she's having this big kind of comeback tore performance in her hometown. And and she's you can kind of see how she's been ravaged by by fame. I'm and and and what it's like to be performing all the time. Do you do perform in see did songs? Yeah. So none of this. You've just said green ons. Hi, this is easy. Well, I always think that some certainly wasn't easy. And but all of these kinds of challenges always take a certain degree of ignorance to take on. And then you you kind of know how aren't they? And you're like I can try that. And then you get there, and you're like, wow, this is really really a lot harder than I ever imagined. But it was really really lucky to get to sing songs written by SIA and work with her music producer, Chris braid. And I've worked with my husband again, he choreographed the and performance. So that was it was it was and with the most incredible dancers. So it was really a very lucky experience just loved her when she just goes to this diner, or whatever dump it was that she would in having the talk and just looking and being aware of everything that's rounder. Yes. Well, well, I think that's part of what's different about being a pop star than an actress for examples that your persona as a pop star is an extension of yourself. It's it's it's it's you that you're putting there, and so you kind of have to be that person all the time, whereas an actor. The whole thing is that we're supposed to be completely different than the characters. We play what's impressive, or you know, is if we can really transform so you know, to constantly be performing this persona is you can only imagine is really complicated. And yes, she has this extreme hair and make up and clothing. And it's it's all kind of this armor that she has to to kind of show people what she wants to show them. Which is she's tough. They can't hurt her. Like, no matter what they say. No matter what they do. She can't be hurt alcohol the drugs and everything else seemed to indicate that not true. Yeah. Exactly. Exactly. Well, the yeah. The more the more toughness people show, usually the more the more wounded, they they are the question of violence that you brought up before it's so key to it gives the movie does begin with the school shooting say anything more about it. But it's the time of. Combine it's we grow up. This is what this country..

Golden Globes nominations and the Oscars find a host...for now

"KCRW sponsors include neon presenting vox, Lux, twenty-first-century portrait of Celeste a pop megastar grappling with a tragic past starring Academy Award winner, Natalie Portman and Academy Award nominee, Jude law academy eligible in all categories opens Friday. I'm Kim masters, and this is the Hollywood breakdown joining me is Matt Bellamy of the Hollywood reporter, and Matt we have the Golden Globes nominations out today, and I cannot discuss the Golden Globes without once again, noting what the heck are the Golden Globes. I mean, this is a group of foreign press people, and they are not a big group about ninety. I think is how many there are and they have managed, you know, kudos to them to create this gigantic deal around a bunch of reporters, some of them who I think are not even fulltime reporters may not have been published for awhile anywhere that you've even heard of. But whatever they've made it into this huge deal this huge telecast. And even though it has no connection to the academy whatsoever. It is. Deemed to have influence, so I guess we have to talk about. Yeah. And the fact of the matter is the Globes do matter they're an awards body that starts off the season their their nominations are in play during the very important holiday movie going seasons. So they can be influential on box office, and they are an indicator of the Oscar nominations, and I think this year the big winner from the globe. It's gotta be vice the Dick Cheney movie from Adam McKay, which has six nominations to lead the field. Yeah. I mean vices people thought that Christian bale would be nominated for playing Dick Cheney. But I don't think it had been seen in the best picture category. I don't know if it truly influences, but maybe on some unconscious level this attention does influence, so I'll let you have that point. Again. There are some changes. I do think that the Hollywood Foreign Press has tried to do better. There has been a wrap in the past that they snub movies with African American cats that did not happen this year movies that are in the mix. This year are black klansman. From Spike Lee, Black Panther. Of course, the marvel movie, and if Beale street could talk which is based on James Baldwin story. So those movies are in and that's better one thing that has not gotten better. And this was pointed out last year by Natalie Portman and announcing the nominations no women nominees again in the director category. That is unfortunate. I don't think the Academy Awards nominations will likely have any female directors. Either least how it's playing out right now Tamara Jenkins is sort of in the race for the fertility drama private life that she directed for net. Flicks. There is Debra Granik has leave no trace, but that's considered a smaller movie, and Marielle Heller has can you ever forgive me, which is getting more notice for Melissa McCarthy's performance, and she was nominated today as well. Yeah. Of course, there's khloe show with the writer, which just wanna Critics Award in New York. So that I think might be on the academy's potentially. It's a small. Movie, but potentially on the kademi threat. Our TV is where the most controversy happens, you know, things like succession overlooked, which is a very well regarded HBO series, and you know, certain things that don't seem to make sense, but I'm just going to pivot away from that for second to talk briefly about the Academy Awards after a long delay. The academy has come up with a host or ABC for the ABC telecast, Kevin Hart instantly, there are issues on the internet because of homophobic jokes that Kevin Hart had tweeted unfortunate. But it's a very tough job the academy to find a host. And it looks like they may have overlooked something here. Yeah, he certainly popular and has a lot of movies that people love. So we'll see when that they stay with them. Thank you, Matt. Thank you. That's Melanie editorial director of the Hollywood reporter. He joins me this Monday at two o'clock on the business. I'm Kim masters, and this is the Hollywood breakdown KCRW sponsors include neon presenting vox Lux at twenty-first-century portrait of Celeste. A pop megastar grab. "Okay. First story to names that I never thought I'd say in the same sentence Natalie Portman apologizes again to Jessica Simpson. Oh my gosh. I'm stressed out. I'll read today's this story. I saw just because plus, but I didn't know what prompted okay. Yeah. I couldn't figure that. There's this story Natalie Portman is following up on her original explanation of her comments about Jessica Simpson with a direct apology quote. Thank you for your words at okay, they skipped around here anyway surfing beginning. Well, he says this now fastly, okay, Natalie comment, madly Portman made a comment about Jessica Simpson being in a bikini and how she was also like a virgin at the time in the nineties in the nineties. She was photographed into McKinney. And it was also saying she was Jin Nellie prominent things you can't do both. Yes. And then Jessica Simpson put out a very well written statement. I think I'm actually read it verbatim. Just Instagram dot com. By the way, both shutting down right now. Jackie I agree that it was eleven statement. But the red and black motif was weird like she went out of her way to put like casino colors in her statement. And I thought that was an interesting aesthetic choice. I agree. But I think she wanted to be taken seriously. Okay. And it sounds like the colors virginity like read. Really? I don't know. Right. Is the color of blood when you break your virginity? So it's all about Charing. Okay. This is what she said at Natalie Portman. I disappointed this morning that I confuse you by wearing a bikini and published photo taken of me when I was still a virgin in one thousand nine hundred nine as public figures, we both know our image is not totally in our control at all times. And that the industry working often tries to define us in boxes in. However, I was taught to be myself and honored the different ways all women express themselves. Which is why I believe then. And I believe now that being sexy and McKinney and being proud of my body are not synonymous with having sex. I've always embraced being a role model to all women at to let them know that they can look, however, they want where whatever they want and have sex or not have sex with whomever. They want the power lies within us as individuals. I've made it my practice tonight. Chaim other women for their choices in this era of times. And all the great work. You have done for women. I encourage you to do the same. I thought that was such a beautiful statement. And I read homeowner we talking about. Right, right. Yes. And betting heavily partner. Make these initial comments what why she coming up and also wise Natalie Portman still thinking about a photo of Jessica Simpson the bikini from the nineties, I don't know, exactly. Go from the G Q shoot where she looked show. Banging. So I always think about like when I think of Jessica Simpson, my mind immediately goes to the daisy Duke shoot with a little underwear denim and underwear looks so great and that was like the best she ever looked. So I understand that. Really? I think I would feel a lot better. If I knew what exact photo they were referring to you know, yet whole shoot was set. I don't know. But it the interview she said that she was confused as a teenager while she was a teenager by photo of the singer in a sexy bikini, accompanied by an article saying, she was burgeon. And then so in Natalie apology, she also tried to blame the media for putting those things next to each other. Right. And not Jessica. So I guess the point in the original interview was like as women growing up. I was given false media. You don't even know like. Really pisses me off. I don't fuck with her either. I'm Jessica Simpson. Like, no matter what the argument even was. But she's also, right? Well, I'm just because Simpson because we have the same birthday. And like, I've always felt this connection to her. And when she was at her peak, and like birthday buddies was thing, I was guess just Simpson's my birthday, buddy. And like everyone's always Chelsom me, and I don't fuck with Natalie Portman, and you'd think like her just because she's like, a fellow Jewish girl from Israel born in Israel..

"But that one is that one is good too. That's a great one. And then the exact same premise no-strings-attached bed. Well, I think me lacunas, and Justin Timberlake and more likable. They're more likable, but they're also actually funnier than Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher Natalie Portman, of course, fantastic actor, and that's necessarily funny. No, not necessarily. Fantast Natalie Portman of phantasm actor gave it like about asked. And the national was also in that movie like a bull. He was great in that seventy show. I mean, he's undeniably likable. He's looking in charming and tall and handsome. I just list absolutely physical. Maybe it doesn't him this rooms covered in posters. A love Peng. I love canon digital cameras. He those two movies were I appreciated them. I like the I like a adult like young young adult not like old people. I guess now. I'm old. But like twenty something Rahm calms. You don't get in see those a lot. At least when I was a kid. I always felt like the mom calms where people like Billy, crystal and Tom Hanks, we're like either thirty or sixty I couldn't tell when I was younger and now like, but then like when those broadcom's was so I just recently saw a very good new rock. I mean, you have any recent new ones you really liked. That's my question for you. Have you seen set it up on Netflix? So this is gonna be problematic. I don't think that was good. Wow. I know. Wow. I wanted to like it. Okay. I wanted to like it so much. I thought that it was very by the book without. Having like. Sinn do for me interesting. I liked it. Because I did think it was by the book, and I actually didn't care for the romance. Really? Yeah. I just thought it was a funnier. Calm. Maybe it was a calm Rahm comedy. I thought it was funnier than a lot of wrong calms have been lately. Like, I thought it was like Zoe deutshe and forget forgetting the dude's name right now. Who's like the handsome young other young male lead? I thought that both of them were they came across very funny. I didn't really have chemistry with each other. It is kind of weird that like the chemistry like like they were just both charismatic. But I didn't like really feel like them are of. That's the the fallback not the right word drawback or or downfall. Either. One of those of a lot of rom coms are that movie. Now that you're saying it points added a little bit to me where they. Kind of like are just together at the end of the movie, and you didn't like actually feel like you just feel like they like in that movie. Particularly feels like they just get to a point where they're like. Okay. I guess it's us we. They had one scene where they were like sharing that pizza where I was like, okay. I'm feeling something wasn't enough to get me through. And I felt like just the pizza. He's really like. Gives me cry. 'cause I wanna sausage and pepper slice. Pizzas. Kariya? These to numb nuts. And I also that the comedy was kind of all over the place like in parts of it'd be super broad than it wouldn't and this like opening like an opening seamer. The guy just like throws his phone into the bushes. And that's like very broad like people don't do. And then like, suddenly, we're back leg it was uneven to me, which is probably what I did like about it like a comedy movie where I'm just like. Wow. They're really just going for what they think is the funniest in this moment. Yeah. But also I see now how it affects its ability as a rom com yet. I don't really care, and I also felt like both bosses were. So over the top. Oh, yeah. I don't know. It was fine. I guess have trouble that I feel like that that the movie is just writing on like a girl being adorable. Yes. And I felt very much like that's what it was. And a lot of and like they did one of my least favorite rom com. Tropes, which is like they made her like really into baseball. Yes. Like em. When Harry met Sally like she's not like adorable. She's just like a woman. Right..

"The third creative partner in this who narrates the film is natalie portman can you talk about how she got involved with this project i've known her and twenty years ago twenty five years and this subject has just been an ongoing something we talk about time because you know as i was saying earlier it's not as if i reach some conclusion and then just went with it it's the wrestled with and continue to wrestle with and i i happen to like talking about it's one of the things chris just mentioned as really good point is this is not something that feels bad or is it diminishment only there things about the subject that are scary it's violent and it might require not doing things that feel good but it's actually a really great conversation to have because it touches on things that we care about kind of like tickles our brains and interesting ways but also that act of self empowerment of making changing the way that you live so that you better resemble the person you wanna be just feels really good and like students know that better than the people sitting around this table maybe because we've been we've forgotten a little bit or jade did a little bit but on high school campuses college campuses that kind of choosing to go against a mainstream that that doesn't seem to resemble you is really exciting on american college campuses now they're more vegetarians than catholics says not like a fringe you know movement this is something that's very very much at the heart of what younger people people in their teens and twenties or thinking about so anyway not only and i would talk about it and she knows writing the book and i sent her draft before i had published or finished it and which you had the draft she was really moved by it and said this might make a nice documentary and those kind of the beginning of a conversation that took a lot of time because christopher can testify to this obviously much better than i can really hard movie to make is one thing for me when i was writing the book i made a research visit but i did a lot of reading a lot of phone conversations krista get in places and you know you can't just talk to someone shows they're part of what's so powerful about the phil film are the kind of humane atmospherics looking at the face of the farmer seeing those pink lagoons really was a case of an image being worth a thousand words what we've mentioned the pink lagoons a couple times can you describe christopher what we're talking about when we say pink lagoons yes the hog industry kind of migrated to north carolina so this is a this is eastern carolina's which is you know i think the water table set three three feet three to seven feet in this area and the the it's a area that they overtook this very it's mainly you know impoverish poor rural african american community and they lack the political clout so incomes this you know the hog industry which had moved from virginia down to north carolina you know specifically smithfield murphy brown these are two big players that are in this area and they just dig big ditches and they put all of the excrement the pig shit the urine everything goes into this big what they call pink lagoons and the color of the water turns has pinker slow yep it which in your film you have some overhead shots of of of these places yeah and the remarkable there at you know when you're way up high in a in a plane looking at them they look like these pink postage stamps and then when you get closer there really an enormous size and they can do what they want with you know they put it in the that move from that you describe from virginia north carolina did that just have to do with laxer regulations north carolina yeah that's what i'm you know you know there was political clout that stopped it from happening in virginia so they just migrated somewhere else.

"The featured speaker the most memorable speakers probably oscarwinning actress natalie portman and natalie portman who won her oscar for a movie which i loathed frankly cold black swan um from the same uh directing writing team that gave you mother which is a leading away by the way with nomination for the razzie awards for the worst achievements of hollywood history for last year to film i gave zero stars to i gave two stars to black swan but i hated the film in any event natalie portman who was much better it seems to me and jackie uh last year natalie portman spoke about the need for a revolution what kind of revolution listen a world in which i could wear whatever i want to say whatever i want and express my desire however i want without fearing for my physical safety reputation that would be the world image female desire and sexuality could had its greatest expression and fulfillment that world we want to build is the opposite a puritanical so i'd like to propose one way to continue moving this revolution forward let's declare loud and clear this is what i want this is what i need this is what i desire this is how you can help me a cheap pleasure to people of all gender is here with us today let's find a space where we mutually consensually look out for each other's pleasure and allow the vast limitless range of desire to be expressed let's make a revolution of desire this is remarkable a revolution of desire and she wants the freedom to dress however she wants well the end of that then uh litany of i i want the freedom do this that she says without fearing for my physical safety so how you achieve that in other words if if a an issue telling that there are some people know i'm sure would prefer to uh walk around without clothes and if that becomes a legal for women how would women feel if it were legal for man and how would that work out in terms of at what she is talking about as a profound revolution uh look harvey weinstein uh actually had been staged precisely that kind of revolution for.
