Khun Start production again, Pro sporting events can proceed with Without Spectators, universities and colleges can reopen, but there is still no plan for other schools in the fall. Governor Cuomo will also have to decide went to reopen some pretty major things here malls, movie theaters and gyms. Officials say you've done a great job but remain vigilant where your mask, keep your distance and distance and be wary of out of state travel because there are so many covert hot spots all across the country right
In New York, Nassau deficit may hit $749 million over 18 months
"Fourth of July is when we look to the skies for fireworks, but another kind of red is being seen, especially in Nassau County, where the usual revenue including the mall money is not rolling in a mall in Nassau County, is a big money maker for the county, but without the sales tax revenues generated by the stores at the mall because it remains closed by the governor. Because many stores around the county was shut down. For months, the county is facing a big deficit nearly $750 million. The county executive Laura Curren says she plans to help close the budget gap by asking the county's financial control board to refinance $285 million over the next two years. On a brighter note, however, for residents, county run pools and splash parks are reopening on Friday and 1/4 of July special vintage military carp. Raid will be taking place in old
Curran To Cuomo: Let New York Malls Reopen In Phase 2
"The governor's decision to keep malls closed is not going over well in Nassau County WCBS reporter Sophia hall tells us what the county executive Laura current has been pushing for malls a big revenue maker to open in phase two now the governor says they will not even open in phase four I will continue to advocate for laws to be able to be opened I have been speaking to a mall operators they have very good protocols detailed protocols about how to reopen safely with social justice education PP they clearly want to protect their workers he says the mall's employee so many people are saying forty percent are people going to food pantries and food banks people are still out of work there's a lot of in security financial and security as for gyms in movie theaters also not re opening as originally thought in phase four protocols in the gems you know movie theaters I understand people might not even want to go themselves so you're going to have natural social distancing there someone who is really likes the gym for physical health or mental health myself I am very disappointed that we're gonna you know have to wait a

New York City beaches open for holiday weekend, no swimming allowed
"A few days at the beach is typically a no brainer for Memorial Day weekend needless to say it is a little bit more complicated this year some beaches are open some are restricting who can go others are restricting what you can do there here to tell us where new Yorkers and new Jerseyans can go to welcome the summer wireless socially distancing is WNYC's Karen Yi and the Jake often hearts of Gothamist Karen Jake hello hi David it it it there is still so much we don't know about cope with nineteen but many epidemiologists say that with social distancing precautions in place heading to the beach does not pose a large threat for people in low risk groups Cameron let's start with you governor Murphy said beaches would re open for the holiday weekend is that right yes that's right so Murphy has said if speech is re opened they need to limit the amount of people on the beach and enforced social distancing so it's really gonna be up to each municipality to decide how to do that and what parts of the beaches or boardwalks to re open so remember not all of the beach is closed during the pandemic some have already re opened and some remain partially close and it's equally as complicated in New York City right Jake governor Cuomo joined New Jersey Connecticut and Delaware to open up the beaches but mayor bill de Blasio technically won't open up city beaches that's right David New York City is fourteen miles on public beaches are technically close what that really means is the beaches are closed to swimming sports picnics many of the social things people go to the beach for but you can still walk sit on the beach or even dip your feet into the water up to your ankles the idea is to discourage nothing Yorkers from going to the beach so it's not over crowded what about beaches on Long Island to Jones beach the Hamptons these are very popular spots for new Yorkers or they could be an option many all island beaches will be open this weekend but they're not exactly rolling out the red carpet for us New York City residents several towns including East Hampton have plans to limit or entirely banned outsiders from their shores that's led to some regional contentions of Nassau County official had to walk back in down and out of towners on Nickerson beach after my colleague Sylvia Chang points out that beaches that receive federal funding must be open to the public the state run beaches like Robert Moses in Jones beach will be open to everyone but they're restricting capacity to fifty percent and governor Cuomo says people could be turned away from parking lot as early as ten AM single parking is always a problem and beaches in both states Karen tell us about the Jersey Shore is parking to be restricted even more than usual yes so again it's gonna come down to home rule it's New Jersey right so it's gonna be up to each town since sandy hook which is run by the National Park Service is limiting parking to fifty percent and so is island beach state park which is run by the state mayors have told me that they're gonna be announcing reminders on loudspeakers there's gonna be civilian ambassadors patrolling the boardwalk there's gonna be a lot of signage but really it's gonna have to come down to trust trust that people will do the right thing and act responsibly what Jake in New York City you have reported on members of the NYPD enforcing social distancing measures in physically aggressive ways in the subways and on city streets can new Yorkers expect a large police presence on the beaches what is the plan for monitoring resource can definitely expect to see a major law enforcement presence this weekend and why PDP stale has been up thirty percent they'll be joined by parks police and thousands of social distancing ambassadors similar to New Jersey if things get too crowded the mayor says they may even put up fencing literally barricading the beaches anyone who tries to swim will be ordered out well in New Jersey some mayors are concerned about not enough police presence on the beaches Cameron that what are you hearing I spoke two point pleasant beach mayor Paul Kenitra and he's very concerned about this so his speech is partially open not the boardwalk so this means that Jenkins beach is also gonna be close but the biggest problem for him and re opening everything is that he says he can't hire the seasonal officers who normally boost up as police force during the summer because all the training academies are closed so for the things that are open for the part of each that is open he says this weekend will be a test run for whether the precautions they've implemented will work we need to see how realistic it is to have our badge checkers wearing the mask and gloves and in hot weather we need to make sure that our lifeguards are able to you know the date people and do things appropriately with the set up that we have one up one down on the lifeguard stands in with the new half the filters for their resuscitation devices so the mayor said there's really no playbook for this I mean everybody is really trying out what works for their particular beach okay so if people can solve the puzzle of finding an open beach what happens when they get there will there be open public restrooms or boardwalk restaurants open for food pickup so curbside pickup is allowed for nonessential businesses take out is going to continue for restaurants a New Jersey recently allowed to go cocktails on the public restroom issue again that's going to depend on the town whether they decide to open those or how they apply limits to that the one thing that the state is encouraging is that everyone wear a mask right and it's the same thing in New York there will be some to go through the options available re sparked beaches are is open many of the vendors on Coney Island and they'll be some bathrooms and Porta potties starting this weekend and finally you keep in mind the water's going to be fifty five degrees not exactly swimming weather even if you are out yeah I think that's gonna keep a lot of people out of the water we'll have to hear much more about how it goes this weekend WNYC's Karen Yi and the Gothamist reporter Jake often hearts thank you for joining us thanks
New York to Let Visits Resume at Some Hospitals
"One governor Cuomo has announced a pilot program over the next two weeks to let hospitals in the city Westchester and Long Island accept visitors again officials in Nassau County could offer elective surgeries I'm also says Memorial Day ceremonies can go on as long as they involve no more than ten people this is an important tradition many people lost their lives this is important to many many families all across this state and nation it's important to the veterans that they'd be recognized and I think we can do that and I think we can do it safely comma says vehicle parades are also fine the governor says Albany and the capital region can be again re opening New York City the Hudson Valley and Long Island are the only regions of the state that remain closed comment was also pushing a bill that would block businesses from laying off workers if they have accepted government bailout

WCBS supporter. Sophia hall with anchor Michael Wallace on this Sunday's afternoon up. Well, it'd be for employees who have access to a hotel or motel room and two guests personal information. For example, the person who works at the front desk, and housekeeping, and that's a county legislator Kvant Abraham says he has heard just too many awful stories from across the country of women getting sexually assaulted by employees in hotel or motel rooms, and although here in Nassau County. Thankfully that has not happened. The police Commissioner says there are numerous reports of thefts in rooms. And also reports of identity theft any opposition to this county. Yes, the opposition comes from those who believe that even though someone committed a crime in the past that does not mean, they should not work at a hotel or a motel, but the legislator says he believes in second. Chances and there are many other jobs at hotels and motels that don't involve having access to rooms. Plus, it would be for really the management to decide. So for example, if you were convicted of stealing something from a store back in nineteen eighty two let's say the management may say he or she has not had any problems since and they wanna give them a second chance. So they would give them that front desk job, this idea of background checks for hotel or motel employees. So is this a new idea or is this already in place somewhere, according to Abraham's? This would be the first of its kind law in the entire country. It has been introduced in Pennsylvania and Florida, but it's not law there yet. So if it passes here in Nassau County. Yes, it would be the first of its kind. Have you heard from the hotels at all? What are they think of all this? Okay. So there are hotels in Nassau County. That are currently already doing this a couple of Marriott hotels Hilton hotels. They're already doing this. So they're applauding the idea. But there is one hundred hotels and motels the Nassau County and a lot of them are not currently doing this. So it would be mandatory for those who are not interesting. Okay. "Doctor Citron was there when the funding cut I turned to be willfully naive or out of the loop. So I didn't know was coming to an end, although I think that knowledge probably was available. I think what it became public to our patients. It was a couple of months before it actually close. There were still a clinic, but a lot of the time it was just one doctor seeing patients, no social workers. No nurse practitioners know infusion room and it was moved to a location that was kind of like hiding book in a library, moved to location wherever numerous other outpatient services were seeing patients. At the same time. I called up sickle cell specialists all over the country to talk to them about these centers and why they closed. They spoke about this decision in a way. I. I wasn't used to hearing doctors talk. They were frustrated. One doctor Johns Hopkins said, holy cow, what dumb idea. When you came here, how many people were working on cycle? So I was the director of myself Dr. Katharina Manetti is in charge of the sickle cell program at Mont. If your now she's been trying to build the clinic backup over the last few years. And I have dial you that my beige in here, the one that remember they still beg me and they said, Dr mini. Why don't we have them room? So you still have patients who talk about? Oh, I do. I do. I really do. Yes. I do have patient that they're still remember vividly the infusion room. What? What was it about that place that makes them like keep asking for it to come back? I while it was immediate access to care. Secondly, was the sense of home that would not be judged or mistreated or considered addicts. Dr. Minniti says that I h d funded these centers because it wanted to research better treatments for sickle cell. Even a cure, but you cannot do research without care. That's what this fundamental doin their stamp. A decade after these centers closed, here's where things stand according to the most recent data. We have the median age of death for adults with sickle cell hasn't changed for four decades. Men die around age forty one women die couple of years. Later doctors can't be sure, but I think it's because comprehensive care is so hard to find. Cassandra Dopson that nurse who wants treated prodigy. She remember seeing him one last time. She says he just collapsed on stage during a show. And I remember saying to him, why don't you develop an organization where you are the manager and you get other people that don't have to saying you don't have to sink 'cause you're gonna get dehydrated, you're gonna be sweating like a horse. You're gonna be trying to run around those stage singing and you're gonna collapse. I remember saying that to him because you become so dehydrated. So you are worried about his health when he was storing that? Definitely. 'cause I know that he was on toward like hundreds of lay days a year Lee? Yes. And that's one thing you cannot do you have psycho. He a set that he loved what he was doing. Any did say that he loved music. He loved rapidly sending a message to the world. I think the message could have been. Send on a different platform. You know, without you trying to kill yourself. See worried about him, dying young, it it really. I was so heard when I heard that he died. I, I literally had to stop just praying and cried because he was in his forties. Is that young, it's for now for six out patients. It should not have happened. When prodigy died. All of Cassandra's concerns came true, but that's not where our story ends, not yet because in two thousand eight, just as all these centers were closing, changing the lives of countless sickle cell patients that same year prodigies life was also turned upside down. Next time on the real nece prodigies up north trip. The real production of WNYC's studios hosted by me, Christopher Johnson and Mary Harris, our editors Christopher worth..

"Dr. Citreon didn't really wanna talk about prodigy, but the sickle cell center that he would talk about he spoke about it almost wistfully. It was like a little day hospital. There would be six beds. There would be nurses, nurse practitioners, and there would be at least once position. Available on call or physically available. Usually what Dr sit in his calling day hospital was what's known as an infusion room, a place. Sickle cell patients could get intravenous medication. It was from about eight in the morning or nine in the morning until about four in the afternoon or five afternoon. Sickle cell patient was in pain. They could just call up the center unbelieva voicemail message. And the first six people who called would have a bed. They would be called back first thing when the center open and there'd be told, your bet is reading come on in I, I would be a first call first serve basis. This clinic solve the problem that all sickle cell patients have, what do you do when you're in terrible pain, you've taken your pain pills, but you still aren't getting any relief prodigy had gotten used to going to the ER, but doctors and nurses in the emergency room weren't necessarily sure what to do with sickle cell patient. You could see it in those medical records that were filed in court. He saw new. Dr every time they struggled to know how to treat him. The people here knew just what to do. And so at the end of the shift, which is about eight hours, they could leave without having had to go to the emergency room where tanking troll is much more difficult to accomplish and the patients liked this. But here's the thing going to ER all the time. It's also really expensive. The lifetime cost of treating the average sickle cell patient is nearly half a million dollars mostly because of all that time in the hospital and at the sickle cell clinic, patients could avoid all that and the staff. All of us had very direct personal relationships with the people we were taking care of. They knew us, we knew them. It was pretty personal. I mean, the the one story I heard was that there was a moment where you talked to prodigy about. His opioid use. Talked about it. Off. He. Well, yeah, I did what I wouldn't do which to talk about, but. Okay. She, he. He was true to himself. He whatever he said. He believed whatever he said that he would or wouldn't do whatever of what I might have suggested that he should do or should do that he didn't agree with. He was willing to take the consequences and he would do it. I don't know what a smile on his face. Exactly. But he would do it with a clean conscience of us. You know, strong heart doctor Citron's got a lot of patience, but clearly prodigy had an impact on him. I should probably stop it. Yeah. Yeah, it just I think this simplified put as any walk. The walk. Very smart person to. Yeah, that's what everyone says everyone's like he was like deep. Despite all the good this center did for sickle cell patients in two thousand eight, the NIH withdrew funding for this center and all of it centers around the country..

"So I did know off him, but I didn't know who he was like, I'm not a rap star Admira. Cassandra Dobson is a nurse who treated prodigy even gave me a CD to give to my daughter. And so when I gave it to my daughter h- you know, prodigy, I said, who is prodigy. What is wrong with him? Why the hospital? I never told her confidentiality. She does. He have sick, and I said, I don't know. I cannot discuss that with you. Prodigy was sent to Mont VR in the middle of that probation violation trial. This was one of just ten comprehensive care centers, Priscilla anemia in the country, and all of them were funded by the national institutes of health. These centers were established when Nixon signed the sickle cell anemia control act back in nineteen seventy-two Cassandra. She worked at this hospital for years. She ended up really liking prodigy just not the first time they met. He was so angry. I will never forget that. He literally took a table. You know, the nightstand the patient nightstand and just threw it at the door towards the physician and myself, and I went, oh, no, you're not gonna do that. I said, what is the problem? He was kind of on, you don't know what it's like. I have Sukosol disease. Wanna f me up, and I said, I realize you're may be in some pain, but this this is not how you show pain. That it help that you also have sickle cell ups. That's one thing I told him Cassandra herself was diagnosed with sickle cell when she was nine years old and I said, do you know I have sickle cell disease? Whose know what type do you have said? Well, I have the worst kind. I said, I think I have the same as you, you know, but you don't see me Karen on like that. This story about prodigy throwing table across the room under seems to have almost expected this kind of behavior from her sickle cell patients, some patients because they don't get the attention that they need from the healthcare workers will carry on in a manner that is not conducive for a normal person. So they will have these temper tantrum was like a two year old. They'll have a temper tantrum because I want what I want when I wanted, and you're not giving it to me, I'm this is what I want, and that's what he was going through..

"At this point. The judge seems to be the only person involved in this case who's actually arguing against prodigy. Again, this is in the court transcript. The judge says, quote, if the district attorney is not gonna object, I'm objecting and I'm sustaining my objection. Eventually, he ruled against prodigy sentenced him to one to three years in state prison. It just didn't make any sense to me except for the fact that was bias. Later prodigy would call this judge the most racist judge in Nassau County. Actually, he calls him Archie bunker, but you know, I asked Risco if racism is what she saw when she was in that courtroom and she shook her head, maybe he just thought the kid was full crap and let's face it. He was no angel. So I can't say why the judge acted that way can't say racism. It could have just been ageism. You know your rap on. I don't like rap. Risco says, just think about when this trial was taking place. It got started just as to pock was killed in Vegas. And by the time it finished biggie was dead to wrap wasn't exactly positive back. Then you might as well said, rap criminal. So it might not so much about race and more about he was rapper, and he was young. When this judge looked at prodigies medical records, he saw something really different than what Risco saw or what prodigies lawyer saw any of those lawyers arguing in front of him. So I asked someone else totally to translate these documents, Chris pain morphine. Court. You can read them. I was like, I don't think you can read it scratch, but I can read it. His name is Dr Wally Smith, Helen. Have you been treating sickle cell taking care of sickle cell says nineteen eighty four. Dr Smith researches sickle cell. Any takes care of about four hundred patients at Virginia Commonwealth university. He the early ones seemed to just say walkout just what that meant. Walkout can read that word left AMA that means he left against medical advice. So in these records, you really can see inside piece body. He keeps getting these bone scans scans clavicle his left leg, his right arm. All of these bones are severely damaged. He has what's called fishmeal vertebra which is when your backbone is literally wearing away. One doctor told me like it's kind of like they're, they're rotting. Yes, that's a good word. Rotting is a very good word truly is curry in every long bone all over the body. I asked while I explained just what was going on here. And he said, you can think about what's going on in peace body, sort of like a heart attack. But in your bones, it makes no oxygen is getting to the bone, so deep. AAC Mark. Marquardt Lewis game is what leads to heart attack. This could be thought of as a bone attack. It's just no pain. Mike you've ever had before. It's knowing deep doesn't go away until the schema itself goes away that can take days to weeks. Peers also getting something called acute chest syndrome. This is one of the worst side effects of sickle cell. It's actually one of the leading causes of death in sickle cell patients who are his age. Acute chest is basically a crisis that occurs in the lung itself. The blood vessels of the lung essentially get sickled, but in them t- tell me about that. If he if you had four instances of acute chest, what does that mean? That's a, that's a harbinger of a bad. Thanks to come. Each one of those could have killed him. When you listen to prodigies music, one of the things I p is known for is being a storyteller, and then you look at these medical records and you see his body breaking down. It's a whole other story about prodigy that most of us don't know. Can we talk a little bit about, you know, at this time ninety five ninety six. He's early twenties twenty two. What is that time period like for someone with sickle cell is Phil. You know the first time I talked to Dr Smith, he told me that one of the biggest problems of being a young adult with sickle cell. Someone like prodigy at this age is that you're just not cute anymore. The way you.

"Dies in Las Vegas after a drive by shooting. I cried like my mother cry when Marvin Gaye died in their obituary. The New York Times called pock rapper who quote, unquote personified violence to pock spent years trading insults with east coast MC's begin puffy mostly but mob deep to even made fun of prodigy's sickle cell with his song him up. Don't want you got. Back the fuck up. You get smacked the puck up. When two pods died, mob, deep had just released their own track that aim straight for two parks head. Gotcha. Now you. And within a few days of all this prodigy shows up in a traffic court in Hempstead Long Island, it's the kind of place you're usually in and out of an day. But instead he got arrested, this is the moment that that probation violation finally caught up with him. So I got hired to deal with the violation of probation. Well, apparently this pissed off the judge and that's where these medical records come in the ones we've found years later in that Brooklyn courthouse earth filed them because he wanted to prove that prodigy was too sick to show up to his probation visits and too sick to show up for court prodigy MRs. Hearing after hearing. And if you look at those court documents, you can see just how skeptical the judges about this whole case. Actually, let me just read to you from the transcript. The judge says, you know there has to be an end to this thing. When is that going to happen? Is it going to happen in my lifetime or your lifetime or the district attorney's lifetime? I actually actually remember the assistant district attorney helping me because she was not happy with what the judge was doing. This district attorney, the one who helped Irv. It was Risco. I didn't learn to laughter you supposed to. Have, I don't know, go along, I guess. On probation cases because you know it's really probation saying this person did wrong and you're supposed to do what probation asks, but. Put ever reasons. Just not my nature. No. Now risk was supposed to be prosecuting prodigy, but she saw those medical records all those hospital visits and she felt for him the judge didn't. And the judge was saying, I mean, I think having the second most of me was when he said, I read the medical records, and, and so I remember reading it said. Patients resting comfortably and the judge said. Oh, that meant he was faking before, and I said, no, it meant he was suffering before then. Now he's resting comfortably. He wanted me to use that as evidence that he was not in pain. Prodigies lawyer Irv tried one more tactic. He got a doctor up on the stand to testify about sickle cell, and he asked the physician if getting locked up could actually be dangerous for someone like prodigy. Now, the judge seems angry. He basically asks Risco to object, cheer members, thinking to herself. If you want to object, you come down, take a pay cut. And take my job and object. Otherwise, I'm going to do my job and you do yours, but I'm hoping I didn't say it out loud..

"Hey folks. Before we start, we wanted to check in about the language in the realness. You're going to hear some offensive words, especially f bombs and in bombs. Our team talked a lot about how to handle this. And in the end was struck a balance between recognising how loaded in -fensive that languages and telling prodigy story the way he told it, okay, here's our show. You know. People think you should be defense, attorneys, why you prosecute? Oh, you're, oh, sell out. This is this woman I met named Risco mentioned Louis. She spent years as a prosecutor out on Long Island. She's black. I've actually had a blog woman on a jury old black woman, smaller smile saying Hello, and she whispered in my ear you, you sell out you trade. That was that was funny. She don't owe me, so I don't care what she thinks. She's tough when you shake her hands. It's it's a real handshake. And she decided to become a prosecutor specifically because she wanted to be the person in power. Would you rather be the person begging full-power all the bid? The person can make the decision about power. I want to be the person who gets to weigh in. Risk made prodigy when he was just twenty two years old. She was prosecuting him for violating probation. A few years earlier had been arrested with a pistol in his pocket. Like you heard in our last episode, guns were starting to become a big part of prodigy's life. He was involved in a shooting at a record label. He was sneaking guns into nightclubs for this first arrest. He was sentenced as a youthful offender. All he had to do was make time to check in once a month with his probation officer, and he did that for a while. But then we got famous and then he stopped showing up. Is probation officer, put a warrant out for his arrest, and eventually prodigy ended in a courtroom sitting across from Risco is just an upcoming musician to me who could be big. Okay. I mean, but who then meaning to me, this is one of our first cases in county court. While we were talking at some point, she stared off in the middle distance craisins case came back to of talk to herself off Mike. Now. Just saying that to cases in my life that I recall this one and another trial I had that will kinda pivotal in my life. What makes you recall them both to the to the share anything. I think seeing the humanity of. The defendants. What Risco saw was prodigies medical records, physician's notes, blood tests, the number hospital visits. His lawyer had filed all of that with the court because he wanted to show that prodigy had been too sick to meet with his probation officer and when risk got a look at these documents, it totally changed the way she saw prodigy. I think as a pro, you know what it is prosecutor, you never get to see a person's life. I read about his illness. I read about him. Being in pain in the hospital? I read about him. Writhing in pain in the bed. I read about him. In a courthouse in downtown.
