This is the story of a guy who struggled to be a good son and accidentally became a great dad. The film focuses on how a father and son worked to transform America's pastime from its dusty traditions to a totally different ballpark experience. Their story also includes one of baseball's most disastrous promotional stunts of all time. On Skype, vulture critic Jen Cheney offered her review of Saint The of Second Chances. This movie focuses on Mike Vek, who was the son of the famous baseball team owner Bill Vech and he eventually came to own the Chicago White Sox and they were really pioneers in the field of baseball promotion. They would start to just do giveaways and theme nights and things that really hadn't and done been on a regular basis in baseball or sports and that are now just commonplace to us. Unfortunately, the case. This was the first idea after doing a disco night one night to do Disco Demolition Night. And as we know, that promotion did not go well. It turned into a riot. It became sort of a symbol of people we were acting the club scenes where disco started. Black people, gay and lesbian people were really the pioneers of that movement and that felt very discriminatory, even though that was not the intent. And so the film looks at what happened there and then how Mike kind of came into his own again in the minor leagues. It's a really, really entertaining film and really fun to look back at all the crazy things they were trying to do. Also this weekend on Apple TV, the docuseries the supermodels. We're learning a bit more about some very familiar names. Yes, there are four episodes of the supermodels. All of them have dropped on Apple TV+. And this is really focused on the careers of Christy Turlington, Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell and Linda Evangelista, who were all friends during that time. really And it's looking back at the history and how they navigated this world and the fame that they walked into. Because you forget, they were very, very young. I mean, Christy Turlington and Naomi Campbell were doing Vogue covers and they were like 17 years old. So it's really interesting to look back at it from that perspective through the lens of now and sort of all the fame that they were navigating at such a very young age. "Perhaps people will suddenly see through whatever I've done and then they'll realize that actually I shouldn't be here. Certainly as a young man as a young model sort of trying to make it in that industry, it's not like you're trained to be a model. Right. And certainly back then, that was when I started, which was in the 80s. It was nothing. It wasn't even training. I haven't had to become a photographer. So then learn how to become a model. And so you really felt out of your league in a way. And there are times when I remember doing a show for Chanel at the Louvre in Paris and I was literally in a room with Karl Lagerfeld and Naomi Campbell and the list of names of who was in that show. It was a who's who of every single supermodel of the late 80s early 90s. It was Claudia Schiffer and it goes on and on and I remember being in that room and I was one of only four male models. The male models in general are considered to be sort of have been considered historically as the accessories in fashion. We're not really the main affair. We are sort of there to be a prop to the women who are selling things mostly selling the clothes. What have you? We're somehow a part of it. Unless, of course, you're selling men's fashion. But there isn't as much. So it's really a woman's world. And I was in this show show as a prop pretty much. I was actually to carry the models on our shoulders down the runway. So being put on our shoulders, we had to walk them down, runway in Paris. One of the biggest stages in the fashion world in front of everybody, the world's press and heaven forbid we drop a multi-million dollar supermodel of our shoulders. So the intimidation was quite high. First of all, the room of perfection was ridiculous, but then you realize the more you get to know everyone is that everyone is also insecure in their own little way. The moment you can get past that. And get past yourself actually. And realize that anyone's looking for is really to be made is to laugh. Okay. And she's been working at it since then as she competed on. Britain's got talent of few years after junior vision and went on to win the second season of malta's factor in twenty twenty which is the pathway being. Malta's artists of eurovision once contest was cancelled. She was reselected internally for twenty twenty one. This particular song was the last one to debut during selection season and it is currently one of the favorites to win the contest. Malta has not yet won eurovision the finished in second place in two thousand two and two thousand five. It would be a pretty big deal if they're able to close this even if it doesn't happen destiny just signed a worldwide record. Deal with sony. So she'll be okay justin. What were your thoughts on this track. First of all. I was surprised. Multi even had an x factor because that is a tiny country. I'm glad that they do because it's a pretty good song looking to lyrics again. I think it is a female empowerment track. But it's one of those things where it's like yes queen get it. You don't need no man that sort of thing and i'm all for that. That's kind of my vibe. Twenty four seven any way you know just being like yes. Yes girl be walking on the street and i want to hear that from people. That's the kind of song that i want to listen to my airpods. Walking down the street as people try to bother me and i'm just like no thank you. I'm too powerful for. This is a little cliche in that way. Though there's a lot of size that now in the ether and i think there is the risk of course of it being a caricature of genre of song. It almost got there. But i don't think it fully went pass up line. I watched the video and one of my favorite comments in the video from this one person who said how many hair cells would you like me destiny replied with yes only changes changes and i'm just like yes. I wanna see all the sides. Honey show me everything you got it but by saying that it's become clear that they're trying to pack in as much visuals as possible to attract people towards it so i think it's doing a lot and it's almost too much but it's a fun song so i don't think we need to necessarily take that seriously i liked. It was fine. I would pretend to be naomi campbell on the streets of winnipeg where there's nothing happening eating a donut of big oil. Maybe and just living my best life. I feel like when we first talked about this. I didn't have a whole lot of thoughts other than i like it a lot. I'm not sure that. I have any further advanced thoughts. It's a real good song. I think is my favorite out of the semifinal. It is one of the favorites for reason. It's very strongly written two things that had come to mind since we chatted about this. We had talked about how last year the song that was chosen for. Destiny didn't feel like it fit her as a person i remember discussing. It is feeling like martha wash song. My initial reaction to this one last time we chatted about it was that this felt like a eurasian version of lonzo and in both cases. I think that's just a dearth of comparison factors for black female performers. One thing that a friend brought up that. I had not thought about that. I don't think is necessarily to the detriment of the song but as someone who knows a lot about the last decade of eurovision if lyrically and mattingly this is too similar to toy it's in the same space and one of the things that popped up. Is that dna from sweden. Apparently did not make mel fest with the song and so it got scooped up by destiny's team. It does feel like a swedish take on what toy was doing toyko very aggressive in its approach to its subject matter and this feels lighter it was something that had popped up that i found very interesting to think about. Yeah it does feel very familiar number of ways. The toy comparison didn't strike me until you mentioned it. It's kind of reminding me of songs that rupaul's drag race contestants. Oh it's a lip sing song. Honey eighth yeah. It's definitely a lip sync song but also sort of tracks that they release after they are contestants on the show but a good quality one. This one doesn't feel as disposable. Some of those tracks can be. It's making me wonder if maybe that is part of the strategy the ven diagram of drag race fans in your vision fans is probably a circle or very close to so i can understand if that is somewhat intentional on its heart but yeah i don't know if i if i have much more to say about the song that hasn't already been covered does a really good entry for malta. I think it is a great song for destiny at so much better than last year's by only concern is the end of the song where it just kind of peters out. There's the last horn break. And i don't know how that's going to be staged in a compelling memorable way and hoping that they're able to do something that kind of continues the momentum from the build going into the last chorus. There are songs that we've discussed today. Where i can't see the triumphant final performance. This accurate wins. I can absolutely triumphant file. Performance of jamaica's exuberant the vocal lines. All over the place because they're trying to not completely burst into tears. The video itself was the kind of thing that i think stefan from. The 9, 11 and country to combined, So she's out there. This is for her. She lost. And it's okay for us to say to Democratic candidates to democratic nominees. And let's be real as I record this. It's still April. Were still in the primary. It's okay in April to say. Hey Joe Biden I wanna make sure you actually have an agenda for US okay. Like that's not an let's be real did he is not making threat. He is saying that we all deserve to have a presidential candidate. That has an agenda that actually represents our needs. Our concerns are our biggest issues and that they have to have a plan. And we wanna see it because what we've seen for most of our lives is presidential candidates who desperately rely on our vote but have no agenda for us have no plans for us. They plan on being generally nice. But we need something more than general nicety like we need people that have an actual policy agenda for the concerns and issues that we have and I'm grateful For diddy who didn't say. Hey I'm not voting for Joe Biden he just said Hey We're at the stage. In American history where the Democratic candidate needs to have a serious agenda for black folk and anybody who looks at this situation says otherwise is ridiculous and I see other people saying. Hey He's saying that from a place of privilege I don't I don't understand that. No He's saying it from a position of authority of somebody who generally doesn't go into making a deal with somebody unless the deal is good for everybody in what we want to understand is HBO. We're GONNA make this deal with you. Not only where you are the Democratic nominee but where we go all out to make sure you win the race. Exactly what are you going to do? And if that's a problem for you saying something like that then we need to have a big conversation like we need to go deeper if saying that much Riles you up. And gets you frustrated? Then you have probably been eating crumbs under the table for so long that you are used to people over promising and under delivering. You're used to not getting anything like the U. S. just the standard and so I see a lot of what I think are just outrageous. Criticisms of what he said I think people understandably so so badly want to defeat Donald trump that they are afraid to even ask Joe Biden for favor and is lying. No no we can do.
