"The Maison with Kevin Nation. I love it. When sometimes, the business conversation goes off in a tangent talking with a business associate, the other day and we were talking about a restaurant. He woke with that just coming to America have locations on like the Washington DC area, have some in Chicago but really nowhere else around America called Nando's Portuguese chicken that started in South Africa back in the eighties. Very fascinating and he said, hey, you can go get the sauces in your grocery store. So hopped online and look and see if the Public's right down the road. The one, we shop at every week, we can pick up these Peri-Peri sauce, has the only problem they've got like, six or eight to try and well, I want to try them all but one of my whole bottles of them all because I don't know if I like them. Almost wish. There was a way to test sauces. When you go to the grocery store to get samples, almost like a taco sauce packet, to be able to try at least once just an idea. I love coming home, New combinations to put on whether it's chicken, or burgers or turkey, or whatever it is. I love sauces, although I'm excited to go try some of these new Peri-Peri sauce has probably been to my grocery store shelf for years, just didn't know to look for a job.

"You'd find that depending on the paypal and this there's a lot of confining factors in that but most people wouldn't use it because they'd just be like whoa i don't have a reason to use these and if they were the kind of person that would use the aqa regardless of how they would use it if they never go given that they would use pain compliance in some other fashion and then of course we can talk about abuse and totally. Like i'm with you. That's a really good point. Bring after a rosy. I hadn't really conceded that for sure is that there's a detachment it and there's that impersonal nature of the call. And i think even some of the best china in the world that i observe not actually capable of being impersonal. Lay still whether your shoulder deep soul something. There's some sort of indicate. I think it's very rare. Lucky people talk about the hand of god correction. I don't think very many people pull that off. Federal i think that they they telegraph in one way or another in fact a really cool video dots video. Goi giving an unfair correction via the goal and the dog responding coined And so it kind of took away. The took away the ability to that. There's no way they can make the connection like. I'm quite sure the doesn't understand that. A radio frequency transmits from the hand. But what he understands is when your hand. does this. why. Nick gets hurting. And if you don't have an arm then you won't be out of do that. And that was the connection. The dog made it was a fantastic video. But y- hey like when certain animals get fat like there's a little heavy that she is the doppler. Yeah total so. I think it's a really interesting conversation. It's got so many layers to it. And i don't have the right answers to it other than that. I am really scared of to speak to that legal standpoint on that it should be training. Should be a gateway you have to go through before any of these tools are available to you. There's many reasons while. I'm opposed to that but but that's kind of one of them. There's nothing that you're not going to be out of. Stop it in the same way that there's illegal guns illegal drugs there's trafficking make things as illegal as you want people find a way to do it but then you make once you say to someone. Hey you're the bad guy because you do that then. It's really hard for them to become the good guy even though there is a path to doing that right like even though you just say all you gotta do is these mandates like fuck you you already seven the bad guy now. I'm the bad guy. And that's what we sometimes say with. I think that retribution point something that you spoke about their nando. I think sometimes people say that punishment is reinforcing to punish out for sure that can be the case but we come. we sometimes leave out that it's negative reinforcement to punish show and so the long that it's the relief of negative reinforcement because i'm changing behavior. That's been grinding at me for ages and so then by the time my punishment like that is highly reinforcing to me. Because i stop at and that's where people tend to go into that retribution standpoint. And that's one of the reasons. Why i like to think in talk sort of holistically about things because i think when you say to people if you punish your door which you guys anyone we associate with but when you say to people when you punish.

"She will see with you and she will have that same emotion with you and that's empathy whereas for me. It's taking like literally years. Because i read a book that said it makes you a better parent the more empathetic you be and i was like. I don't have any of that so i'm gonna fucking develop and like for me in order and i'm pretty good at it now. I have to go through some complex shit. Be empathetic with some like when someone is upset about something that i can't share that we do. I have to create an entire fictional reality for myself to travel down where i can get that upset and it's usually got to be. The situation has to be so ridiculous and this might be that somebody is really different from in their upset over fucking nando posting that on a bad person right and they lose their mind over that right and they really upset about it and you know in my over it and in order to have empathy for that person. I have to create a fiction so outrageous that i can feel the same emotion that feeling and i am totally able the sympathy straightaway boom. I can sympathize with you. you've misunderstood. he's the situation. You're upset but to feel empathy for them. I have to create these nonsense reality and it can take me minute sometimes to come up with these bullshit story that can put me into their shoes and understand it and really truly understand it from that perspective and then go like aw i now feel what you feel. It's a different reason. But i can feel what you feel. Now i have empathy have empathy with you understand. I can. I can work with you. But like i say my dog does that in a fucking instant paypal one of my dogs. My other dog doesn't give a shit how you feel right if you come into my house kind of low and defeated and you like that my ripe. You like. that's goto a just jump on you and start trying to mount you and you and he'll be like you'll wake i'm going to take advantage of this whereas my other dog will lay in your lap and be like all like i'm gonna help you through this. I will feel it with you. So i think it can be a really individual thing. I think the emotions that does will feel is going to be really individual in that. I'm sure that like with your history. And endo which we haven't even touched on. He bought me and you'd have a wonderful time yet. "But coming back to what you were saying. I would i would beg to define and again it comes back to looking. Dog saw are as a species when we look at them as a primarily. A social species really cooperative facials. Acc and i would say seen evidence of dogs putting onto a message for longer fricks an even jealousy. I would say. Because i definitely had situations where particularly one of adults would hold a grudge and we'll hold a garage on another dog days and you've had experiences Wet dogs have held grudges for weeks and then waited for that opportunity to take out when the other dog i can see at brigham and to bitch is some todd. Physical sometimes hold grudge against one of one of the dogs going for and doing something without done for war or go for training. We don't know that's why definitely the but the flip side to that is like when you have a lot for me people. Let's hold on if you lose a dog. do you let your other dogs. Go and see. The body laid compulsive. The dog said troy and is slightly on faulk my life. They go over and i know that. There's no kind of nothing while Fucking blubbering mess on the floor. Chapin leaving and so on. They've definitely a difference there between humans on not suggesting that doctrine the sign. I just don't underestimate the blaze. i don't think anybody does. I think that most people who have been involved in this field for a long period of time understand that there is far more than what we comprehend and you know. I believe it was chad mccann. Who said it. And i bring full statement is that we're on the up to date as far as sciences allowed us to be so as pat and i were talking about this not too long ago about into the future where we can get by metric readouts and really start to understanding delve into where a dog is feeling and make that more measurable intangible. I think one day in the future that will definitely exist. We will be able to get a job at a rate at but right now with limited on. Fm our technology and science studying whatever they choose to investigate and put money into. They spend time studying. But then you've alerted us to the point which we accept as well and understand is that this is not a perfect environment. This sometimes is an environment which is convenient to the scientists and to the people who measuring data. So the problem is that we've got some evidence. But there's still a lot of limitations around that and i think people are really different and therefore individual dogs would be really different. So you talking. Just their nando about jealousy being a advice emotion and then joe. Rosie used the example of like a more complex emotion. That would be more difficult to sort of come to being empathy and that could be really different between people like myself now. I'm quite capable of empathy. Where you know maybe five. Six seven years ago i was completely without it like i didn't didn't really even understand what that was could understand sympathy like i could see somebody else's situation and go. I understand that you are upset because of your situation. But i couldn't feel they're upset nece whereas my dog is an path like if someone comes over to my house and you've been having a bad day she will take that from you..

"Why we're kind of messing around. With their hierarchies stop preventing different social things from happening. And we're putting docs together. That would never be together Be we've we've played. God massively with evolution of this collection of dogs live with us companions and so i think the result of that the then even true to their own species behavior. Because we've we've brought them into something that is dependent end at You've to office in a way that no other species in the world is and it's very very difficult to clean how that really makes an artificial heritage affects the the reasons that they feel things. I think that does probably fairly confused or feel things. All fatty conflicted. Certainly in terms of how they feel because they've got is what has formerly been actual and is natural for the vast majority of species on one hand and then they've got how they were bred and how they've been rights for the past many many generations on the other hand and today as t- things connected anyway so i think it's really hard for us to any ross. "So we're talking about and scientific acknowledgement. What about the layering of emotion. Because we touched on that earlier on before when you were talking nando do you believe that. We have corrupted data effectively through emotions. Pointless to skinner. Didn't believe that you could measure emotion. So therefore to remove that component gave him a much clearer picture of a specific set of data. But i think we're not doing justice to the dog to not include emotion though there is especially now the science where they using our right machines to carry out. Scans on dogs are white. That kind of thing. Some of that needs work as well. That's progressed ford. A lot. and what sunny. When i first started to china and we weren't allowed to talk about emotions because we have an anthropomorphic. Dogs we were treated him not humans and now is fast becoming less and less day were because as long as we acknowledge. A dog is a dog. Then it's unkind to understand that they have the same biological makeup in the brain. The we now different components might measure differently. Night obviously have a larger olfactory bulb and different different under stuff. The fucking and is eleven. Which is a fucking watermelon. As long as we can as knowledge those differences and don't take it to fall. I'm not talking about people. Treating dogs dogs they to me to him way. Actually we can stop studying. Dokes as sent him brings as opposed to rats in his books can maintain intense human emotion crompton signs a hundred percent. Yes that's why you need to let let me just really quickly. Because i do definitely wanna that cover the human fucking up science as well as i definitely want you to throw the grenade of the worst science. You've read recently but i don't what i was hoping to just sort of touch on because you brought it up and it's something. I've been meditating on quite a lot. Recently is there was a time in skinner's time where we couldn't measure emotion. There was no way to do it and so it was easy just to take it off. The table is the blackbox. I think he called it right like what happens in the box we do not. And so now we can dairies effective ways of measuring motions and the very basics so we it turns out a lot of the things that we said. All when people say globs me would say all your anthropomorphic. Nothing ever said that word correctly my and and now we go. We'll like there's people who are now going fuck you. My dog does love me. And he's the evidence right. I'm curious to hear from you guys. "That is music by Nando Cheetah rela. Well, it's actually music by Mozart, isn't it? But Nando Catarella has turned it into something very much his own. The catalogue aria Mad Amina catalogue away, Cuesta! From Mozart's opera Don Giovanni. The story goes that Mozart wrote about hearing people on the streets, singing some of his melodies. I think that was in Prague, but if you can imagine People singing Mozart on the streets of Naples. That's probably what it would sound like with all that traditional South Italian drumming and percussion. Nando Cheetah rela. Before that. We heard a song by Michael Nyman, The English composer called Profit and loss, which is based on an earlier Michael Nyman piece called in raid on Giovanni, which in turn is based on that catalogue aria by Mozart. And I think in this entire five parts, Siri's of mostly Mozart Fringe Festival shows Nyman is the composer that we're hearing more of than anyone else because he just Mozart has been a deep well for him of inspiration and of actual source material. Which is my way of saying Expect Mohr of Michael Nyman tomorrow night on our final new sounds program in this five part series. And in Queens in Queensbridge Park. The pianist and toy pianist, Sugar Bendel set up shop with with her toy piano and some electronics to play an early piece by the very young Mozart. And that was a world premiere that written specifically for this Monday afternoon performance as part of the mostly Mozart festival, So here are two pieces recorded live outdoors, a queen's Bridge Park. A Nobel Prize winner in economics uses AI to make poverty research go even further

"Nobel Prize winner. Who uses a I to make her poverty? Research go even farther from American public media. This is marketplace tech. demystifying mystifying the digital economy. I'M ALI WOULD S S. Thirty flow is one of this year's winners of the Nobel Prize in economics. She and her colleagues one for their unique approach to tackling poverty. They tried to break up. Huge problems. Blooms like immunization or educational opportunity into smaller problems and then the team comes up with questions about what might work and uses randomized controlled old trials which are traditionally used in medicine and hard sciences to compare the impact of specific approaches and then says do flow. The team uses artificial intelligence ends and machine learning to deploy the findings of their research in the most efficient way possible. Here's Esther Diplo. It's gets learning to a deeper level if you want. It gives you one one more level of faction which is to say not just whether the program is effective on average which you can get from the experiment but where the pork is the most effective and and therefore where a government was limited budget would want to expand it and it's very useful because otherwise the government will be saying well. That's nice incentive affective but down expensive. So what am I going to do. How choose where to put them So that's where meshing learning really comes in. Do you worry about data integrity like we. We know that sometimes algorithms can reinforce bias. Do you worry that errors could be introduced by governments who are working with data sets that may be just reinforced. The old oldways I do worry about device that exists in the algorithm. Not For the moment because they are so underused in governments that I don't think there is any damage that they are doing right now but certainly for the future the algorithm tend to reinforce existing biases. Because they're learning Tom. I'll previous experiences and one of the things that we need to be. Active about is to make sure it doesn't happen. And that's where I think he'd say essential essential to not think that the use of any artificial intelligence is going to be a substitute for policy-making and my full thinking but it it has to be a compliment is cost a barrier cost of accessing this technology or creating these algorithms for developing countries and their governments. I I think it goes into your Pussy Direction. One of the big values of larger access to a digital data processing to the gory them and to Just better way to handle the data in general and to process the data the government have. We'll actually reduced cost to not increase them. Then I don't think cost is the constraints what is the constraint is more the amount of talents like we need people who are excited to to walk in this area and are willing to join government to put their intelligence to the surface of this type of work so for example. When Nando Nila Kenny from INFO ABC's joined the government to start in a sense the crazy project old giving every single Indian person unique identification number? Well that was tied with biomarker identification. This might have sound like a completely crazy plan. But because it he had this intelligence and he's where we there'll and reputation he could actually make it happen and infrastructure that has been built on. The business of the unique system is not without flaws issues but as being unbalanced confirmational for many of the way that India is now delivering the bleak services to. It's four member much of your work in developing these trials has been about as you put it finding the right question and asking questions that contest in opposition to other ideas. Do you think that there is a time when some of this machine learning or these predictive tools could actually help you generate future questions. I don't think so. Neandertal Spears Were Surprisingly Deadly

"This is science Americans sixty seconds science. I'm Christopher Dodd Yata time three hundred thousand years ago the scene a herd of horses struggling in mud a short five meters away, a group of early Nando tall hunters throwing volley of wooden spears towards the animals, and then probably coming into an injured horse, and then perhaps finishing it off with thrusting spear on Emeka milks a paleolithic archaeologist at University College London. But there's something not quite right about that classic scene. She says specifically the Neanderthals spears may have been more sophisticated and more lethal than we've given them credit for which would alter that. Ancient Tableau, we believe that Neanderthals could have thrown them from farther away that that would have allowed them to approach animals that maybe weren't disadvantaged, and they wouldn't have necessarily needed to come right up close to the animal to kill it off. With thrust. Some of these. Shots with throwing spare could be lethal to animal like that. If they hit in the right way this revised assessment of Neanderthal weaponry began with the crafting of spruce timber into replicas of an actual three hundred thousand year old spear. The surface was finished with the same kinds of stone tools used to make the original milks, then recruited six male javelin throwers to Chuck the replica at a hay bale at five meters. They struck the target more than half the time at ten to fifteen meters. A quarter of the time, but from twenty meters just one in six throws hit the hey, I mean, it's still not amazing. Accuracy. I have to say I was hoping for better though, she points out that the javelin throwers aren't trained to hit targets. Something Neanderthals may have been more skilled at and the experiments suggest the weapons were at least capable of sailing much farther than had been thought and high speed video of the throws proved the spears could strike with deadly force. The research is in the journal scientific reports the crafting of these ancient spears also suggest. Just some degree of intelligence, a concept of or intuition about balance mass and design, for example, whoever crafted these ancient spears use the denser, lower part of the tree trunk for the spirit tips intended to strike prey, but we still don't know which Neanderthals use this beers in battle. I want to emphasize that we chose male athletes rather than female athletes. Not because we don't think that women were playing a role in hunting. But because we needed a homogenous sample, but I'd be very curious to know how women did in terms of accuracy, perhaps another round of tests with women throwers can address that. Thanks for listening for scientific American sixty seconds science. I'm Christopher dot.

A 400 year battery

"Hi everyone. There's an old saying that luck happens when preparation meets opportunity and there's no better example of that than twenty sixteen discovery at the university of California Irvine by doctoral student. Maya Li fi after playing around in the lab, she made a discovery that could lead to a rechargeable battery that could last up to four hundred years that means longer-lasting laptops and smartphones, and fewer lithium ion batteries piling up in landfills. A team of researchers at UCI had been experimenting with Nanno wires for potential use in batteries, but found that over time, the thin fragile wires would break down and crack after too many charging cycles. But one day on a whim. Psycho did a set of Goldman wires in magnesium dioxide and a plexiglass like electrolyte gel. She came back a few days later and said, it's been cycling for thirty. Thousand cycles that kept going on for over a month. This discovery is mind blowing because the average laptop battery last for about three hundred to five hundred charge cycles. The Nando battery developed at UCI made it through two hundred thousand cycles within three months that would extend the life of the average laptop battery to about four hundred years. The rest of the device would have probably gone kaput decades before the actual battery, but the implications for a battery that lasts hundreds of years are pretty startling. Two years later and battery tech is growing in leaps and bounds with the adoption of fast wireless charging and lower battery requirements from our devices. It's already easy to forget about power storage, but we are now on the verge of a battery revolution that will see our phones last for a week on a charge and two naval very. Small batteries to power larger devices at it seems like the future is going to be built in Nanno wires

"Homo sapiens ruled the world. There were various subspecies of humans. The most well known being the Nando tells scientists have long believed that there must be in a certain amount of intimate going and interbreeding between the species. Now bone fragments belonging to a female who died around ninety thousand years ago have been found apparently belong to two distinct human groups. The end towel and a little known subspecies called the Nisa van, not he Warren is one of the reporters from the scientific journal nature. He told Jillian keen more about it. So there's this cave in Russia, wherever the scientists have found remains from ancient humans including Neanderthals, but also this other group of humans could add an incidence. So in this new study, the scientists looked at. Single bone fragment that came from this cave and they extracted the DNA sequenced that the unite. And they found something really surprising. They found that it was a hybrid. So it's mother was Neanderthal, and his father was a Denise Yvonne. And that's really exciting because it's the first time that anybody has ever found this first generation hybrid from these two distinct human populations. Neanderthals we know quite a lot about Denise Evans, not so much, what do you know? Well, very little actually. So they've only been for the Nathan specimens found, we know they had big teeth, but not a whole lot more than that. But that's one of the reasons that this study was so exciting because there are so few remains out there to O'Reilly. Find a hybrid kind of suggests that that mating between Denise Evans and and Neander, those was fairly common. Could it also perhaps explain the demise of Neanderthals that maybe they would just intermingled out of existence. Yeah. I mean, that's that's one of the theories that scientists have put forward in terms of the demise of Nanto's Denise vans. Perhaps they bred with knowledge with each other, but they with us and we do know that they did breed with us because you know, a lot of us have traces of Nancy DNA in our genomes. If you look at certain populations of people in southeast Asia, they also have a small percentage of Denisov Indiana. So one of the theories that scientists have is the yet maybe maybe it was the result of that kind of intimately because the counterargument that by intermingling, you can make a species stronger rather than weaker. Yeah. I mean, this is something that I talked to some of the researchers the I interviewed for Panetta gather this story and Faye suggested that actually, in some ways, it's possible that these kinds of hybrids could sometimes have been weaker. They may be were infertile unfit in some way which could explain why when it comes to Denise vans and Amanda, at least they didn't become. One population as where they remain these two distinct populations, even though they were both around for hundreds of thousands of years. And when you talk to those research to get a sense of something really significant with excited. Yeah, absolutely. Everybody, I talked to his very excited about this. The authors of this study that I talked to, they told me that when they first came back with results that seem to suggest that this offspring came from two different human populations. They couldn't believe it. I felt I must have messed up the analysis in some way, but no, everybody is very excited.
