"I've gotta pick one bone on mcmillan and wife. Why the hell doesn't the police commissioner carry a gun question. You're doing all the shooting. He jumping off towers tackling people. Why were they maybe. Maybe because they knew he was a pussy cat. I gotta tell you one one one story. We most of the time between scenes. We go into roy's trailer and we would. We would go over the next scene and stuff but sometimes we would play cards but this one year nancy walker was a great what do you call that needlepoint. Her and rocks. I've always wanted to do that so she started teaching them something. So the rest of us are sitting there and we all learned how to do simple cross stitch. I was working on a belts and somebody else was doing the anos. And then rosie greer happened to guest star on the show. The la rams football sure. Oh thank you and His hobby was needlepointing. He would. I remember him doing on the tonight. Show and and all that stuff. So anyhow rosie and iraq sitting at the front and i'm at a table facing the front nancy's on a little van and mark read all the makeup man is there and he's tatting away. We're all we're all doing our thing here and all of a sudden the door open. There's a knock. The door opens and in walks. John wayne who looks at its needle legals in the air and turns around saying jesus christ door lock goes better. Better go after him. It was hysterical. Here here's a question from a listener for you. John marks go back. Was john considered at any point for the mash. Tv show i was. They came to me and asked. If i would consider doing it. And i said well the parts a sexual joke. There's no real store. I mean what are you going to do with it. They said yeah. Well that's what we're looking for is some sort of sexual element so i said no. They hired another actor. As as both hausky. I think it will lasted maybe two episodes but during that period of time. That's when they came up with jamie fires. Character of the cross dresser was great. It was visual. It was funny. It was perfect for that show. Did being in a hit like mash so early on in your career i mean. Maybe it's a dumb question an obvious question i mean. Did it help a lot. yes i think. In retrospect it did. Yeah it opened a lot of doors right away i I don't. I was also a bit of a snob. I turned down stuff. i probably shouldn't have And so eventually wants. Mcmillan took over the movie momentum. Sort of dwindled. I see and and i began. I think there was quite a gap there between between some of them. So you were a movie snob. Who is turning down tv roles. No movie snob it down movies. Oh d do you remember. Do you want to say which will there was one burtless. You've made burt. Reynolds and liza minnelli. Lucky lady lucky lady that i was in his church kuku direct stanley donen stanley down. That was yeah and uh but the idea of spending all day in a boat rocking back and forth with just a few lines didn't appeal to me. You know it wasn't. It wasn't the lead. Saying i don't even remember but it was a fairly substantial role but i turned it down. And in retrospect i think it was. It was a group of people that would have been good work with with extraordinary director. Sure how could it have heard. "No pun intended. I will always be to the dixie. I always you know. Always be indebted. Nancy walker for that Yeah will i certainly will be. Because according according according to people were in the movie nancy walker refused to be onset anytime valerie. Perrine was onset. Rather was in every goddamn seen so. I don't know who to thank for anything cooking. Just thank you. Just thank cocaine. Just thank your pain. Just thank you take go. Baskin robbins had a tie in ice cream flavor. For that movie and it was called. Can't stop the nuts. i swear to god oh no. It wasn't yes it was. I swear to god. And i have a picture of it. My listeners already know. We covered this year. A i remember. I remember eating. Can't stop. oh. I remember eating the condor man ice cream which is not as exciting so neither was the herbie goes bananas high scream. It wasn't very good. I know why was surprised. There was bananas in it. Because i don't like bananas. And i was like i don't want it would never mind. Nobody cares nobody cares. Nobody cares where is also really cool about this movie is that it's very grounded in reality like it. It doesn't get weird. I mean it's weird but it's not like lynch weird like you said. There are a couple of nightmare scenes or premonition scenes that the visuals are so simple. But they're so good like nikki has a nightmare and one of my favorite visuals seeing little. Kt walking which is blazing sun behind. It's just very creepy image. Like using the sun instead of night like you know blindness instead of dr for scary thing i thought was great. Even the snow got creepy again. We'll satan is the labor so Richard dying there. There's also a birthday party nightmare sequence. There's a birthday party. Seemed to that. Were never really sure. We opened with their birthday party. We there's something there in the middle though. We're somebody's having either a dream like you said or a premonition It could also be where that the children are really going like the souls of the children. The disembodied souls. The children could end up at this birthday party. You're talking about the creepy cakes. Black cake with the railing. You know the creepy cake. That's doing nothing to hide the fact that it's a perfect thing high immigration gay like i guess it's it's like a bunch of a bunch of the children were standing around and then when they were actually acting like children for once in the movie and they were they were playing and there were all there was a place for each of them and there was cake there and toys and balloons to. I have to send you a picture. I just found that they in the movie. But it's in the book again. It's that exact scene but it's in one of those woodcutting bucks. They hold it all children digging mistake and is like devilish figures all around like a severed body parts and their souls being sucked out. See whatever happened that that birthday party was when.

Think it was like this I was under the spell of about Roddy McDowell Big Dick because you know I, also I loved him he was in planet of the Apes. Cornelius. So like something you feel like you grew up with, then you're also like there's something a little queer about him. So you kind of identify with him a little bit and then I watched an episode, which is also an Amazon with commercials for some reason with McMillan and wife, which was the TV series with rock Hudson who plays the detective and his wife is Susan Saint James. Who's like twenty years younger than him? She's like a little nymph compared to his mature forty something rock Hudson. So has the good looks and then they're they're housekeeper is Nancy Walker. who was the mom road to Rhode is Hard drinking and wise cracking. So it ha- he's the police commissioner in San, Francisco right and so. It's kind of setting that queer city his wife, who's twenty years younger than him this wisecracking made and he goes over to the to the to Scotland for one episode because that's where his family was he would go there every summer and his cousin is the new laird of the castle. It's Roddy McDowell and so when he assumes the Position is being the layered like the toast was. They toasted him by saying the Macmillan and you see like the look at everybody's face. Ability life was like an repeats. Martha Raye actually replaced Nancy Walker on McMillan and wife she did. When she when she went to open up the cafe and they killed off the wife after she had two pregnancies but they never had a child and Margaret Hamilton was the spokesperson for another Coffee House, Maxwell House and so part of it is I think like the gay guys in advertising agencies like took the the divas of the gay icons at the time and they made them into brand spokespersons because there were probably hard up for work and it was easy money the other thing that was weird. Me Out of the day, the other thing that was worried about this McMillan and wife episode was that took place in Scotland even though it was obviously filmed in California and riding McDowell's character would have this this fake monster like lock next Monster Lake. And there was always room like you could only see it You know at twilight which in Scotland they called the gloaming. "Sweet. Sweet. Amanda Beard is famous for being a lesbian. Right evil add went on to do gay porn and they ask for Serandon who plays the lead vampire he's the vampire he was he played in dog day afternoon, which is about the bank robbery to pay for someone's. Gender reassignment. Surgery Hammy Susan Rice. Brother. And in the movie itself I mean he has a male familiar and they are roommates in. It's very like you know homoerotic when when Amanda Beer. So you know Amy Peterson and Charlie brewster come into the house. He's like who are these very attractive young people like he's like In both of them? Course as empire is a clear and like right around that time too. I was followed. His Post on facebook is about riding McDowell, and then one of my friends who's older China and he's like Roddy McDowell is rumored to have the biggest cock and brought in in Hollywood. I was just like. You know because most of his characters are kind of very kinda like unassuming kind of army maybe and my friend says the I actually saw it and I was just like Oh my God tell me and he said that he was at an AIDS benefit with Roddy McDowell and ride McDowell is at the urinal. So he went to the urinal next to have and he try to sneak a little peek and. God He was just like you know he was famous for his big cock. So if you're at a urinal and you have a big COP, you don't mind standing six seven inches away. 'cause you're just like, Hey, as long as you've got, you might as well show it and he's just like and enough he was packing some heat down there and how old was. This time probably sixty or something seven eighty who knows grandpa the giant The. Flawless And you know I appreciate Rodman dollars generosity that you know. Overzealous Fan would want to see his generous packages he was married. You know, but he was you rumored to be gay. He. has never come out of the calls then well, he's dead now. So you ever did was out for some reason I guess I don't think. So it's so I. Okay. Everyone knew it was gave what am I other favorite movies that I saw that I see that I watched him into recently and it just came back on Amazon was dead of winter and he plays the sidekick to like this evil doctor psychiatrist and. Mental patient and he's he's evil in that as well. That's fun while he's not even fright night and that I was told I was like I, think it was like this I was under the spell of about Roddy McDowell is big Dick because you know I also. He was in planet of the Apes. So has the good looks and then they're they're housekeeper is Nancy Walker. who was the mom road to Rhode is? Hard drinking and wise cracking. Nancy Walker shares her experience with the Gay Rights Movement

"I'm Eric Marcus and this is making a history. Nancy Walker had a type she liked the brainy ones in nineteen sixty two. When Nancy was in her late twenties she met Penny Penny was smart? It is a whip wise beyond her eighteen years and she read James Joyce Nancy was impressed. The two fell in love and became life partners by the time. Nancy and Penny got involved in the gay rights movement in the Early Nineteen Seventy S. They were living in Toronto Canada where he was attending graduate school. That's where they joined the first gay organization in the Mid Seventy S. They moved back to the US to Boston. Massachusetts and Nancy soon volunteer to work at a weekly newspaper called Gay Community News. As you know from our previous episodes the Post stonewall years saw an explosion of new gay rights organizations and along with the new organizations organizations came scores of new publications the Gay Community News or CNN was among the more prominent and influential Gay Liberation Paper with the national readership readership. Nancy was in her forties when she joined she was an outspoken New Yorker and a moderate pragmatist. It's no surprise that Nancy and the younger more radical staff didn't always see eye to eye. So here's the scene. He's the winter of Nineteen eighty-nine and I've just is travel to the Jamaica Plain neighborhood of Boston where Nancy and Penny share a classic Victorian House complete with a turret and peeling paint. They've been a couple for a long time and it shows all Nancy night. Talk Pennies on hand to offer tea chime in and help Nancy when her memory fails her. Nancy is sitting in a comfortable upholstered chair. She's dressing dark slacks and a light colored blouse which is where I clicked my microphone. I press record interview with Nancy Walker Sunday December tenth. Nineteen eighty-nine at the home of Nancy Walker in Jamaica Plains and Massachusetts interviewers. Eric Marcus tape one side one. I had gotten fed up with pretending to be straight. We'd been together nine years and we had no gay gay friends. So that's when we first went to New York and then we went back to Canada. We would just on vacation in New York went back. That must've Vince. Seventy one or seventy two. I'm not sure took us. Even though we thought we were big shots took us a long time. They get the guts to go. Remember kept finding excuses uses not to go. It's always something wrong. Finally we went and we looked around the room and so people like our grandmothers. I said what the Hell is this what we were afraid of. And that was the beginning and then we went to Canada and so I notice a little newspaper that talked about home files what they call the home of Fire Organization should. Hey let's call and see what it's about and we did. That was seventy two. We first got involved. Well he belonged to the community home. Five Association Toronto better known as Chat and what was the group's reason for being. Oh I think it was An umbrella group for everything for for counseling for social purposes. They even I suppose. Did some legal work the law had changed. The law was universally changed to a consenting adult law in Canada so they had legal advantages that we didn't have that they didn't have the socialist. Matt it's it was it. It was still terribly condemned. People were very conservative there. I remember in Canada trying so hard to get any gay gay publications to find out what was going on in the world and there was one little sleazy bookstore that carried gay papers. They had things like that but be willing to go into what was labeled and known to the public as a filthy bookstore and when we moved here there was a little note. You you know little convenience store across the street from the apartment we lived in and I walked in there and LO and behold his gay newspaper the Gay Community News. It was a quarter order so I bought this thing and I said hey look. It's out in the open. It's okay we don't have to do sleazy things to be gay and didn't know at at the time I was GONNA wind up making the newspaper and not having to pay for it. I think the reason I worked there was. I didn't want water for the news did you. Nineteen seventy six in May nineteen seventy six. What was unlikely that? What was the operation like physical kinds of people? It was unbelievable up wrong sleep flight of stairs into a big open space. That was a mess they had to. It worked very hard to get. What little materials they could? They had no money never had any money. And there were some scruffy looking people very radical people any kind of dress you can imagine. They wore a lot of the people. I knew there are now gone because of AIDS was suicide I mean the voice had long hair every kind of hair. Every kind of everything was a real mixed bag was not a luxurious place. But it was home it meant a great deal to all of us. Every view was gone. Maybe what I'm trying to say because that's how I really I felt. was that somebody else in the rest of the world not fully honest that you could be yourself and we. We didn't get along with each other at all. Even the people who had the same political persuasions didn't get along but still we knew we were among our own you know. It's like a Jewish family. You may not get along but you know this is your place in the rest of it out there is the diaspora. It's not your place. So That's how oh I felt. I don't know how other people felt about. I just know they loved it terribly. Paper had to go on no matter what and it went through hell. It went through fire. They burn the place astound once and we just moved over to a place in Cambridge. That let us use their space and we never missed a week. That paper has been continuously we published since it started in two weeks during the year. They have vacations. It's quite a remarkable achievement. It was either the end of the seventies of the beginning of the eighties and it was devastating blow. Yes it was awesome right. I guess they figured they couldn't get us any other way they were going to do. They couldn't get us that way either. What was what was the purpose of purpose? Yeah I think I think the purpose was to get out of the gate National Gay newspaper. It was the only gate national weekly. It's gone on to something. I consider me three. We need contact with each other. You know there was still gay. People who didn't know there was anybody else in the world. It's hard coming from a place like New York. Imagine that but there there are people in Kentucky and Louisiana and places like that. That didn't know there were any of the gay people. I didn't know there were gay. Men I had no idea I was so delighted the first time I met an openly gay male. I can't tell you it's a brother somebody I can love. You know there were no. I don't think about I mean I didn't I grew up in my own. Little head issue. Weiji Museum in DC N. existence. It started before I got this only three years old with a mission that she was there. A awed yes. Oh if anything was holy was G. C. N. it was a tremendous sense of mission and we loved it and protected What it meant to me was finally all my life? I said I've got this great ideas and I would like somebody to know about them so finally I got a place where I could write and other people could read it. Let's go back to the beginning of interview with you beginning questions. What were you born? Nineteen thirty five. I was born on Saint Patrick's Day and I think he's just terrific because I wound up in a city where just in the city of Boston it a holiday day on where we one flower Fifth Avenue Hospital in New York. My mother was born there in thirty. One Yeah you see. I could've been your mother. That's where would you been in one thousand nine hundred five hundred. BJ have any recollection of that on the day itself. I know I wasn't Merrick. That's lived and I was terrified throughout the war because I had a warped perception. Maybe not so walked what was going on with Jews but they were being put an ovens and all I could think about was being put into an oven so I was quite nervous wreck until the war was. She thought they might come to me. I'm sure if we lost the war I was going to get cooked. So that's part of the reason. I love this this country so much that whenever my my my ex colleagues would not the country I think eight roster I am a Jew. There's no way I'm going anywhere and when I met Jewish people in Canada they said you know you are so aggressively Jewish. There's there's nowhere else in the world. But in America Fed Jews are open about being Jewish and proud of it. She said he keeps you mouth shots. I want an awful way to lose his goddamn closets all over the world. I've been closeted about being Jewish. I got enough trouble so I was always all my life of conscious of being Jewish and being thankful that I was here and and being a lesbian also. I'm still thankful I'm here with all due respect to my I walked progressive friends. This country isn't the enemy. UH system works. It may be the newest country in the civilized world. But it's the greatest one in my opinion so you're right place. I can hear how you could be significant odds with your comrades-in-arms because they hadn't lived through the war. Aw they didn't have the really intense feeling that if I hadn't been in this country I probably wouldn't exist at. Aw

"Win You heard these references. What did you think they meant slash? Tell me why you picked this reference. So I had never heard of Colombo who we now know is Colombo's a TV series named after. Its character Columbo. Character Columbo if you didn't know that which. What a weird name Colombo? I know. It's last day right right but it's just kind of like. Hey I'm Steve Colombo like Columbus should just I dunno it's odd to me be Columbus or nothing Anyways yes I did not know what a man it's like. Get a clue kind of sounded like detective but also not a very smart person. So I wasn't some I wasn't sure but I did you. Had you ever heard of Colombo I heard of it. That's basically it. I think I might might have known. It was a detective TV series literally all I knew. Yeah so I had heard nothing but then when I looked it up I don't know I think talked about matlock before on here so I just have fond memories of like old detective shows so oh I wanted to give it a try. Maybe one day I'm going to have to pick matlock because I know exactly about as much as that as I do this well I I I I I like matlock better but we can get into more about. Why later? Sure so Colombo you guys. It is a detective show and it's lead. What does he lieutenant Colombo the Police Department? Would you know what place what city did. He doesn't take place. Then I think. La Oh okay. Thank but it's kind of here nor there I just know they have beaches and and it was a couple of hours to San Diego in the episode. I watched okay. Oh actually I'm one hundred percent sure because when Peter Falk died the LAPD was like we're big fans. He's one of our. That's which is pretty great so read that Peter faulk played Colombo Bohumil him from Princess Bride. He's the Graham. Yes as soon as I started watching it as as when I started. I started watching the show. I was like that guy reminds me of princess bride specific and I would just like is it. No it's not the inconceivable guy and then I just looked it up and Oh yeah the GRANDPA of course but it's funny honey. I connected him to a movie as a whole opposed to character So yeah he's a detective and he does his best to solve crimes times and guess what he always gets it he always gets his man or woman. True in the episodes I watched it was both times a man but you are corrected act was women sometimes. Yes men commit crimes too much surprise because in the first episode I watched He. It was a woman who committed the the murder in asked her assistant. Who is a man? How can you work for a woman Senator Times Nineteen Seventy one okay. Okay So yeah I watched a couple episodes you to And to be clear there were sixty eight episodes toto there about an hour and a half each give or take a little less summer. Little more. We'll get into more about why that was later. And it had a weird a weird series run because tennis started started and staffed last it went from nineteen seventy one to seventy eight on. NBC minute went from Nineteen Eighty nine to ninety five on ABC and in there were some one off episodes in nineteen ninety seven ninety eight two thousand one in two thousand and three. Wow Yeah so oh Colombo just kept. He solved crimes only and And we will talk more about guest stars stars but because I love nothing more on the show than to list guest stars get ready because I gotta tell you got some people show. Yes William Shatner Ed Begley Junior Leslie Nielsen. Who We just talked about on the love boat? Dabney Coleman Martin Landau from Ed would remember him Leonard. Nimoy Johnny Cash. Dick Van Dyke Drill Lozano. Oh Janet Lee Faye dunaway from Chinatown. I got George Wind from cheers. Matthew Rees Martin Sheen can control Blythe Danner. Nancy Nancy Walker and Valerie Harper from Mary. Tyler Moore show and then these are some of the This one cracks me up little richard so random and Jamie Lee Curtis Vincent Price and back to that episode with Johnny Cash. The name of that episode was Swansong Song Guy. I couldn't resist making that little connection. The Swan Kill Them. I wish that were the case. I think Johnny cash was the murderer if I read correctly in that one And actually a lot of these guest stars were nominated or won Emmys the show so in total one thirteen emmys was nominated for twenty five more. Actually Peter faulk one four times for this role and the show one Outstanding Limited series so pretty big dent in the world TV. Yeah so tell me about the episodes you watched Kyla well. I washed the hour and a half long. Who was the earth was even longer than that? It's very surprise i. It was not prepared for that either. It kept going and I was like. Aren't we added about an hour. No there's more. Yeah the second episode I picked. It might have been influenced by the fact that it was an hour and fifteen minutes but this one was like the pre pilot. I'm not sure because there was like old tunnel more about that so it was called ransom for a dead man. Sounds pretty cool kind of a cool band name. That is a good name trademarking that now. WHO's.

I did not even list. Everybody just ones that. I was like you've gotta know. These people were run here. Dang that's awesome. I know it basically anybody who is anybody was on this show except for bette davis who asked for too much money want were yeah. That's basically the one carol burnett was like sorry we didn't get her. It was too much. That's funny and in case. You're listening waiting to take a drink angela lansbury we did never yes and the carol burnett show however vicki lawrence and lyle wagoner the regulars both guest starred on murder she wrote go. I was waiting here angel- and spirits name for real look. If there's nothing else i accomplish on the the show i am going to connect angela lansbury murder. She wrote every single topic. We ever talk about thank you. Hey one more gilmore girls connection for you with with carol burnett okay. She started in the movie post grad with alexis. How nice which movie i've never gotten around to seeing but now i have a little extra incentive so asking my mom about like what comes to mind when you think of carol burnett show and she definitely said went with with the wind absolutely that comes to mind that was like a twelve minute sketch. Wasn't it yeah really long but a lot of the sketches are like five six minutes. I actually so leading up to this recording. I went through some lists especially because tim conway passed a few years ago. There were a lot live retrospectives in lists of the best sketches that he was in and of course as we will talk about. Mrs wiggins is in those lists but there there were a lot of skits that i watched that were twenty minutes. I mean y or some of them. That were longer than ten which is definitely not typical call for a variety shows today or late night sketches while and something that like i definitely noticed with these is that they are the sketches are not about current events. They're just they're situational or they're mainly people we might know but it's they're like at the dentist at the office at their house and guests come over like it's just very normal situations and i kinda like so. I feel like that's part of what makes it timeless yeah. My mom watched the slot with her best friend del and they imitated. Mrs hawaiians quite a bit for like different reasons than i was expecting. When you hear mrs <unk> wiggins would he think think i think.

"Valerie Harper it's been a long story sadly but we have a development it's it's sadly I don't think a good one how you'll remember that Valerie Harper was facing some increasingly bad medical conditions she's battled cancer and in fact we didn't think originally that she was going to be with us very long after her medical diagnosis was made public a few years back right but she rallied and the treatment seem to be working and well unfortunately at this point and I think it was last week that we talked about her manager setting up a go fund me on behalf of Valerie and her husband yeah for medical costs which was just really sad yeah you you'd expect that a star wouldn't have to face this towards the end of her life yeah yeah that's kind of where we left off that that go fund me page is live an active and open to receive donations for Valerie Harper's cancer treatment so we've got an update today think about Valerie Harper right yeah so this came directly from Tony catchy idea who is her husband through her manager Deanna in here I'll just read a little bit of it this is this is a message from Tony I've been told by doctors to put Val in hospice care and I can't because of our forty years of shared commitment to each other and I won't because the amazing good deeds she has graced us with while she's been here on earth we will continue going forward as long as the powers above allow us I will do my very best at making Vallas comfortable as possible there are two special angels on this planet masquerading as humans who live and work together that have made it possible to have all of Val's needs taken care of for those of you who have been in this position you'll totally understand that it's hard to let go so as long as I'm able and capable I'll be where I belong right beside her many many thanks for your outpouring of kindness and support Tony that just shows that a that is right in the emotional areas the I am fascinated by this piece of that statement there are two special angels on this planet masquerading as humans who live and work together that have made it possible to have all of Val's needs taken care of so I wonder if after the news came out last week about how she wasn't able to afford her medical care if somebody stepped forward and obviously a couple yep forward could very well be that that's that's what that refers to yeah now at a tough situation for anyone to go through and they who feel for valley Harper and her partner and her friends and her family in all of this yeah absolutely and I will tell you I am and I you know so little out but I had the chance to interview were back in the day and she was truly you know you say this like everybody's on their wonderful person she really was a wonderful person at least in a very small interaction that I had with her she most celebrities you know they go through this sort of perfunctory greetings when you you know interview them but she was a very just genuinely nice person and so was her husband to be fair because I communicated with him a couple times and he was just very nice to me I wasn't anybody down and it's just nice to know that there are celebrities like that who are out there and so I've always felt close to her mostly because I was obsessed with her her work on TV you know in my childhood Valerie's family which then became the Hogan family family with that Chris Gatling sandy Duncan was recently not trys get some kind of cracker we had cracked cracked job then of course the Mary Tyler Moore show hand hand roda roda which by the way if you've not watched Rhoda I have I think I still have them on all on DVD it's it literally is just at the White full taste of the nineteen seventies and sit com form when she goes back to New York after being in the Twin Cities with merry Tyler Moore and then her sister Brenda Brenda is played by the our cat what's Cavett a cab the woman who does Marge Simpson Julie Kavner Julie Kavner said Julie Kavner plays for sister Brenda in that series and the guy who played Carlton the doorman is a very famous voice actor the guy who did Garfield dole Lorenzo music yeah Lorenzo music pull that one out of thing air yeah and I'm not gonna be able to remember the guy who plays her husband doesn't matter but here's another one for you because we're just pulling out fond Hollywood memories her mother ida Morgenstern is played by a wonderful character actress who went on to play Sofia's sister in the golden girls don't come on Brad you have to know this is the golden girls trivia thing I know but I can't remember her name you know have bad recall I'm sorry I don't have the recall for you this time field out of might be hind Morganstern played by none other than Nancy Walker okay yeah Nancy Wilson Valerie Harper a true television legend and its C. we have so many memories with Valerie Harper so it's it's just pulls the heartstrings to know that her family is in pain right now and we just wish Valerie wish them all that's just so you were talking about Bradley how the Hogan family what was a call before became the Hogan family salaries family see you had fun memories of that family sitcom all one family sitcom that I used to watch a lot back in the day was home improvement in the nineties and we've got a star from that show who was coming out of his shell Jonathan Taylor Thomas where can tailor terms what hack has G. T. T. been one of the hottest teen stars of the nineties the voice of young Simba in the original line king star of bedroom posters around the great United States what you basically is like dropped off the planet but Jonathan Taylor Thomas isn't headlines today because he wants to be a union representative union represented like like an entertainment union like sag after apparently he's on their board and he wants to be on their board again and page six is reporting that Jonathan Taylor Thomas ed Asner in Elliott Gould want to be on the national board of sag after again so it was like Jack has G. T. T. been doing he's one of those lost celebrities words like he was so hot so incredibly hot in the nineties and then he basically dropped off the planet he's been you know in doing a couple of TV things here and there but otherwise we do not hear from him at all what's interesting about that is gosh what was her name entries Akkerman wasn't she like a like a a SAG after person I feel like she had some role in that so it's just it's just funny because a lot of times it's people you don't expect yeah I think that she was the president of SAG AFTRA at one point was so was Melissa Gilbert from little house on the prairie so it's fascinating it's just like that is a name Jonathan Taylor Thomas Capreol Kerr terrace is the girl who plays the woman who played Andreas occurred okay I thought that was her real.

"So white and here, the seven sleepy sneezy grumpy coaches. How do you do? I'm Johnny, you have representation. I'm the most important commercial. Infant agent, New York. What's flew the Fruit new? of the loom is doing a big odd campaign, something tells me really fit into a fair jockey shorts what a delightful icebreaker. Emme gripes, his sheer bliss in this movie. They sent her up like there's that whole when you, she's agent the first she says her on the phone is how, how are you? She's got this, this, this wonderful age. I'm sitting whoever I'm the greatest model agent. Whatever, whatever. But you got to be some sort of a villain 'cause they had this whole thing of trying to get to apartment bribes. All these crazy things happening to which would be hilarious, if you knew what she wanted, but you don't but they're hilarious voices. Right. Right over my finger is my finger operator might fingers stuck in the dial help. Should never come downtown held. Being. Have big act. Operata my fingers stuck my figures stuck in the dial. That whole telephone sequence and the whole robbery that follows shortly after is so Nancy Walker. I'm like, oh, okay. What are we doing laughing? What's going on? Walker have like a discernible style. It just it felt it felt like laugh into me. Okay, let's since week brought her up this movie is supposedly directed by Nancy Walker at it was supposed to be historic. This is the first time a woman had directed multimillion dollar musical. But apparently she didn't directed. Oh, I mean, she did she was onset like she refused to work with Alary Brian. So she would not be onset anytime. Valerie Pariente is onset Valerie Pariente is in every God damn seat. Except the climax of the movie, except the climax of the movie and. I told you watch that inter that that documentary. Oh, yeah, that definitely fills in some planks. Yeah. This fetish documentary called the fabulous life of Alan car. If I was world about whatever the hell it is. But it's Alan Carr. Thank you. It was fabulous our car in there somewhere who is the producer and out flamboyant gay, man who took over Hollywood for really short time, and then tanked and alley Hollywood eight him. Yes, it is. But without any hesitation, but the on the documentary, they're saying, like dancy had no idea what she was doing behind. Somebody said that she substituted bravado for skill. Yeah. For people. Yeah. Yeah. Yep. Yes. She was just nasty the whole time like even if the premier. From your part, she walked him. It was like high and left. I'm not said this piece of shit. Yeah. Yeah. Bad news. So it was. But that's apparently the other thing with Alan Carr was that he would cast an his movie, both sides of the camera, if he liked you didn't matter. If you had the skills or not, like he's he just wanted Bruce Jenner. He just wanted Nancy Walker because he'd like Nancy Walker didn't matter. But the fact that Bruce Jenner Caitlyn doesn't find job is one thing, but Nancy Walker did not know. So apparently the DP. Oh, really wonder though, if like that was almost a sly move on his part to cast people. He liked him because he ended up taking credit for a lot of these people's work later. Yeah. He did he did. But I mean, the whole cast process turned out to be a revolving cast Chita Rivera was involved in some point. Who to be, I think. Wow. That was weird. Yeah. Chita Rivera was supposed to be good. And birth mom, I believe an elite Newton John was supposed to play in the Valerie, Prien rut prime, then share then Racquel Welch than Jacqueline beset. Holy crap. Yeah. They had a in that documentary. They have Newton John on camera saying that she didn't like the script. Well, I get it 'cause there's nothing in it for her for her. She's a sitter, right? And puts she she was riding high on Greece. And she knew how to, to protect that. Yeah. So, and so or do xanadu so true true. She did her own bomb. But Alan Carr was the one who discovered her for Greece. He's the one that said this, I know she's just a singer, but she's the one that's the why right? So she went from cheese, the best to that ingrate. Overnights. It's all kinds of drama behind the scenes and it's all really awful you that she's the one that he wanted. Who? Out out how? Throughout the movie, there are ubiquitous grease posters, stuck up in odd places Greece posters. And then Greece song titles in. There's this one like soliloquy that Valerie, Brian does where it's all titles songs bunch of songs from crease Heidel yet. Yeah. At towards the end. Yeah. When she's leaving rot Ron's office, this time I can get that at all. It's all song titles. Take my gay card. I love to is that now Steve Gooden Burg has been he lives with Valerie, Perrine, Sam. He's fear house sitter. They're not. They're not a couple. And it's like this day they've never had this conversation before that. Hey, you write songs ice to sleep with everybody in the music industry. A really.

"Oh, right. It was its cult following was compared to that valley of the dolls. But I'm like, I love valley of the dolls. It was not so bad. It was good wasn't it? I mean she did take that women's wig, and throw it down the toilet, which is funny, and she's on all the dolls in her dolls pills, a Frenchman who didn't listen to that ups owed. But also this movie had. Gene, Kelly roller skating, which is most bananas combination of. Like, I know one needed this movie no-one anything in this movie, and yet someone many people took a lot of time to carefully in artistically, make this bonkers thing. This was the first movie Libyan Newton John did after Greece. Yeah. This is the last movie Gene Kelly ever did like what in the world like there is so much about this movie. That is insane. Please tell me how got made. Well, one I have no idea. But to here's what I learned from journal classic movies. It's actually a remake. It's a remake of the Rita, Hayworth film downturn earth, which came out in nineteen forty seven and it's about the muse of dance who falls in love with immortal. Yes. So kind of the same premise. No roller skating involved as far as. I know what's the point? And it was actually originally going to be a low budget disco roller skating film, because that was a super popular thing at the time rolling Sosa. Fuck what a time capsule roller discos. But the budget got up when they gotta live Newton John to ten million dollars. And then it eventually ended up at twenty million dollars. Don't ask me how my word fun fact. Gene. Kelly said he would only be in this movie if he didn't have to dance. He dances in roller skates through this whole thing movie, I don't know. This was his last dramatic role. So their ego it did end up making back. It's twenty million dollar budget. It earned twenty two point eight million. Box office. Okay. So it just barely made back that budget as you might expect it didn't get great reviews. No. Roger Ebert said it was a Moshi and limp musical fantasy so insubstantial. It keeps Evaporating before our eyes. It's one of those rare movies in, which every scene seems to be the final scene. It's all ins in. No beginnings right up to the actual end, which is a cheat. And. I just that's boy is that accurate. I don't know how to describe this movie, but maybe that's the best way you came. They did actually use a real auditorium to film, the exterior 's of xanadu. It was called Pan Pacific auditorium, and the Pacific classic the pain at grand prix pace if grind championship. And this was not the interior when you actually see in tears movies those had to be built because the city of Los Angeles would not allow them to go inside and shoot. It. But it wasn't a conic art deco landmark, and sadly, it ended up earning down in the nineteen nineties. Yeah. So you can't go see it today. So this movie is really where the legacy of this out of Taurean Zahn, don't say, don't say, but where the legacy of this movie really lives on is in the music, the soundtrack went double platinum in the United States. And that's because Livia Newton John really she turned these into some of her classic hits magic suddenly and xanadu. Yeah. I mean, the is pretty fun. Honestly, I know I agree. I was listening to the soundtrack on the way home, laughing and thinking, how did this movie? But as you might expect the music could not save this film. And in fact, it's other legacy is something you are probably more familiar with in the legacy of Hollywood. Yeah, it inspired the Razzies. Which, you know, are the awards that happened around the same time as the Oscars to say, who is the worst in film this year, which our friend Melissa McCarthy was nominated for an Oscar and a Razzie in the same year which is two different roles. Yeah. Anyways, Michael Beck. Our beloved a Sonny Malone was nominated for this role in xanadu, and that was his first in two of two nominations, by no, what was the other one. I don't know. Let's see. Let's see. I think it was that warrior movie mega-force, which came out in nineteen eighty two were supporting actor. Yes. So he he didn't do so well in his career. Yes. And good catch on his name. I think I called him Michael Becker earlier. Oh, yeah. It's Michael back. All right. Michael beck. But guess what? Michael Beck into too terribly. Because Taylor, I don't know if you saw this, but guess what show he starred in three episodes of? Oh my gosh. Was it murder? She wrote ES. It was I told you, there is a connection every episode of our show actually that's not how I said it. But I'm saying it now. Yes. So he did get to star in murder. She wrote so good for him there, three separate roles different years, this movie literally, inspired the Razzies. You guys. That's the whole bad. I mean it is just infamously terrible. And there was another movie that came out that same year. Apparently the two of them were both so terrible. And this is the one that really ended up taking most of the awards at the Razzies called can't stop the music of pseudo, autobiography of discos. The village people. Directed by Nancy Walker who plays Rodas mum on the Mary Tyler Moore show. What another strange connection a pass topic. So here's what I was wondering, and I wonder this about flops when they happen, like. Do the stars of the of the movies today. Like realize that's a flop, and why it's a flop, and then it should have been a flop, because some of these movies that come out, I just think are you so out of touch that you're you're in like what happened. So a living John, not out of touch, she knew. And I found interview of her from nineteen ninety five and Michael Beck like he was being interviews, like, right before just via phone and then via Newton John just talks a little more about. You know what this movie meant to her? Did you realize at the time when you were making this strip rewriting was going on that things are beginning to fall apart? I kind of had a clue win. We arrived one morning, and the directed we had lines before he came in with new lines. Thank him. In said that nobody liked them and send us home. I mean it was it was very bad. The writing was not good that the story had no. And the direct was writing the script s wind along. And then last one day. This is the crunch. I kind of got a clue from this one. I asked him what kind of music? He liked dot music. This is a musical. To that one. No. The story, the story, the music was very good about the music. It was fabulous. You'll oh and, and the dancing was great. Can you take it to the cargo fee? And there was if you look at now even this stuff that's very new in it. But the dialogue was diet dot. Dr under storyline. Didn't work on the I. How did you cope with this bombing? Well, actually, it was all right. Because I'm at my husband. And so I think that kind of made up for he's my now husband wasn't thin. But. I guess it was disappointing but the music did will the album Tidwell. So I kind of set aside myself, the total fare Phillies. Phillies chain Kelly, we'll keep you better than. What a time to be alive. Jim Kelly him so jealous. So she was very aware. I mean they were writing and rewriting the script as they went. She news bad, but she, you know, the album did well, and she was the main singer on it. So I'm sure she saw plenty of revenue from that ironically enough, though, the husband talks about they actually got divorced later that year that she was in that she was interviewed. Okay. Interesting timing, but anyway, I thought it was just interesting to hear from her just be like, yeah, it was bad. Gene, Kelly almost of the same thing. He said, the concept was marvelous. But it just didn't come off. Yeah. So I did find just just some glorious trivia that. I think really encapsulates all even talking about. Are you ready for some trivia? Oh, yes, please. So our fringing Kelly speaking of he took the part of Danny McGuire because filming was a short drive from his Beverly Hills home. Honestly it shows. Michael Beck didn't have to audition for the lead in this film that again, it shows John Travolta actually turned down the role of Sonny Malone, how different with this movie have been if it were John Travolta, plane sunny. I mean, it would have been better question. I think it would have because he could actually act and of would have been magic to see John Travolta in a Levin John together again after Greece. Yeah, I don't just say and famously receives the one sentence review in a word Zanna. Don't. Even if it didn't I love that pun. I love that as well. Plan words, I should say, Joel silver notoriously held one of the screenwriters to ransom for three days against his will the son of wooden deliver. He said, so I locked them in. Well, he still didn't liver gosh, that explain so much. Giant, lock was written under duress. Yes, it was. Dia. Oh my gosh. Gene, Kelly's character in require had the same name as his character in covergirl from nineteen forty four no wonder that's a millionaire. Millier. In my head. I was poise. Maim. Sounds perfect for him. That's why. No that one guy. What about better, gene? Kelly move there. Anyway. What about this win the queer Agra fee in the Gene, Kelly, choreographed, whenever you're away from me is nearly identical to the choreography in the title number from for me, and my gal from nineteen forty two in which he started with Judy Garland. Who I need to watch that one? Yeah. I didn't like walk to double check. But. Oh seem, I'm happy to take that one for. Things today. Yes. So basically Gene, Kelly was like, it's a short drive from my house, the same name as an old character. I won't have to learn new dance number. Sure. Why not? Eighty and just another fun fact tied in with that. So this movie is a remake of a Rita Hayworth movie he started and covergirl with Rita Hayworth. Which is where he was also named Danny McGuire. So if I don't know they're just feels like a nice parallel there. Uh-huh. Okay. Well, final fun fact. The film was actually dected into a Broadway musicale after all of its terribleness, it was, and people are like that seems really dumb, but actually, the musical was a satire of the movie. So a people liked it open to seven nominated for several Tony's and included. Jane Perkowski in the cast, whom you might know from thirty rock or unbreakable, Kimmy Schmidt. Is that the blonde chick? Cool. Somehow, I have no trouble imagining her in that role. Yeah. And there are some slight tweaks apparently in this version, the story of the musical focuses on Greek muse, Cleo, who descends from out Olympics to Venice Beach, California, nineteen eighty on a quest to inspire a struggling artist to achieve the greatest creation of his life, a roller disco. So in this version, I guess, sonny's dream is a roller disco. Now, the big band clarinetist stream. There is something else important to know about this play a huh. Someone very important to us has seen it. Can you hear me Amy, Amy Sherman palladino with the hats? Indian palladino though. We're not sure whether or not with a hat they went to go season do on Broadway. And apparently they loved it so much. They bid three hundred dollars for xanadu teddy bear at a charity. Auction immediately after the performance. Yes. And according to Mike Las yellow before you ask. Yes. Any was wearing one of her John Norma's? Dr Seuss sets. Thank you on brand,.

"Now. Fun. I'm trying to remember who the actress was because I think she, you know, the actress who played mother nature on those commercials, and they were tired of and it always ended with her like summoning destruction on earth because because someone used margarine instead of butter like every every single commercial ended with her destroying something or you know, whipping a tornado down on top of a town because God forbid somebody who's margarine. But the actress who played mother nature. She's very she's a very familiar face. I mean, everybody knew her as mother nature, but she did other stuff. Dietrich data Dietrich. This is does she have an IBM DB. Let's see here. She was an emergency. Murphy Brown NYPD blues, the golden girls. Life goes on friends and lovers. She basically one of those character actors that shows up everywhere. Yeah. Okay. But she's best known as mother nature. It's not nice to fool, mother nature. Now, I will kill you with hail. If you think I totally forgot about that jingle. If you think it's butter, but it's not it's fun. Those commercials where everywhere they were on every five minutes. Could you get all kinds of spokespeople? It back. Then man, he had mother nature killing people because they use margarine. Well, that's it. I'm going to kill you.
