How 'Broadway Joe' redefined the NFL
"Com. Hey history lovers. I'm Mike Rosen world with retro pod a show about the past rediscovered fifty years ago a few days before his team took the field as huge underdogs in the super bowl. New York jets quarterback Joe Nemeth known and then and forever as Broadway. Joe arrived at a Miami Hotel in a Turquoise Cadillac Nemeth known to sometimes show Eh Games. Still drunk from the previous evening's activities. was there to accept an award. The quarterback sat on the dais next to his companion for the evening. Mr Johnnie Walker wrote Mark Kriegel in his two thousand five biography when it was his turn to speak Namus said I'd like to personally thank all the single girls in New York for their contribution. This was pure Broadway Joe tipsy free willing amorous and so was the cockiness that emerged from his whiskey. Soft lips later the jets will win in Sunday and said `I garin teeth. I the colts win by a large score. Today I'm GonNa say Baltimore Colts by a score of thirty five to ten. I think New York to win forty one thirty one. Nemo's prediction wasn't just hockey. It was really New York over forty one called the his opponent. The the Baltimore Colts were seventeen point favorites nameless knees were beat up. The colts have the second most potent offense in football in the best defense. Some were predicting a blowout. They said that it couldn't be done. But it has been near. The Third Super Bowl could gets one sixteen to seven was named most valuable player. Performance wasn't all that stellar. He didn't even throw a touchdown. But in critical wrote the moment itself took Namus fame and pro football's popularity to different planet in fame's pecking checking order. Nemeth suddenly outrank Sinatra. The biographer wrote. Actually at that moment he outranked just about everybody who wasn't a beetle doc attendance around the NFL Sword Soda TV or ship particularly with the launch of Monday night football the following season. The League made sure that Nemeth in the jets played in that inaugural game he's going NBA. Joe Name. After George Sauer for the touchdown everyone wanted a piece of Nemeth especially reporters profiles of Nemeth for the nineteen seventies equivalent of Click Bait legendary columnist. Jimmy Breslin wrote a famous story about Nemeth For New York magazine entitled Nemeth All night long in it. He compared the quarterback hanging out at a bar to Babe Ruth hanging out at a bar. I saw ruth once when he came off the golf course and walked into the bar at the Old Bailey side course in queens president wrote in one shot. He swallowed the mixing Xing Glass Ice Chunks. And everything else. He slapped the mixing glass down instead. Give me another one of these things kid. The place went went nuts. It is the same thing when you stand at the bar with Joe Namath. Life went on like this for awhile not surprisingly Nemeth endured his fair share of busted relationships drunk driving charges bad business. The steals fading playing ability in then of course fading fame drinking was the biggest problem. Nemeth was an alcoholic alcoholic. He settled down in Nineteen eighty-four marrying Deborah. mays woman he met at a voice class with her insistence. Nemeth was able to quit drinking a few years later but after they divorced in two thousand Nemeth began heavily drinking again leading to one of the ugliest and most embarrassing moments of his life during a jets game in two thousand three Nemeth wearing his old number and obviously heavily intoxicated intoxicated was interviewed on the sideline by ESPN reporter. Suzy Kolber he answered one of her questions in a truly shocking way. What does it mean to you at now? Team is struggling kiss. I couldn't care less about the teams throttling Nemeth apologized and entered Rehab. Namus is seventy five years old. It's easier for him to look back now on that improbable win and understand and just how much it changed his life and sports forever. I think about it now. He recently told the New York Daily News. But at the time time I

I thought the saving Nemeth one two punch was as good a beginning to the show. We've ever had it's up Keiko. We watch lost a lot. I know what's going back. But I want to say something about Nemeth if I could Paul absolutely anyway, somebody Oreta was come out next mission game. Religion feel Joel night with the plan. I mean that was a big deal, but not now nobody wants to get caught near a preseason game because they are mostly a colossal waste of time. Greg is up next, Greg? Thanks for the call good afternoon. Good afternoon. Paul thanks for taking my call. I thought the Joel Namus interview was really a compelling when he talked about the what it took to finally get him to realize he had a problem in start turning his life around. And it's amazing. When you hear people do that any walk of life because oftentimes what we hear in a lot of people is the opposite. They never get to that point. And then they die at earlier age, and we miss out on their contributions life and their families, miss them. And I just thought it was nice that Joe was able to get help and continue on to be able to tell his story because. Would have been a different story twenty years ago. If he tried to write that book, then yeah, no, listen, I've been around Joe quasi times lately. Not this your today. But in in in the last few years, and it's it's fascinating to see him. Because he's he's still to me Greg the same guy that he was back then but to listen to him today bear, his soul and do it willingly. He did that to help people. I think I believe he has a new purpose to try to. And he didn't he didn't. He doesn't need the money. Didn't did do this book for the fame. I think he did it to let people know that even even Joe Namus fell down as far as anyone can go. Yeah. And I I agree. And I remember watching that broadcast when that incident with Suzy kolber, and it was just kind of surreal at the moment. And then to realize what was going on and. There. There was a documentary about him at come out somewhere around that same time. And in a realize that you know, whatever he was wrestling with he still hadn't been able to conquer it. And it's a day to day struggle that he acknowledged today that he has to live with. But now he's got help and support and he's on upward trajectory. And I just think it's inspirational when you know, people of anyone can tell their story and live to tell it. Thank you. Greg ready to appreciate it. Why Nita is up next one eight a good afternoon? Welcome to our sheriff cry. Good acne into you. I won't kill this been best poker? Mccue fe. Thank enjoyed hearing from coach saving and Joe Namus wonder if mealy was released in a hoax. So the ethical releases of new work that comes into play because one of my directors. He he was using as he was stringing together a bunch of quartets four shorts together from his earlier work, and then releasing them feeders from quick money grants. So those don't count in my okay, cool. Minor some heavy hitters of great directors. And I have to that are no one that's only a streak of three to six four two weeks of seven as I'm excited to hear your list because four is my most okay, go also we're gonna we're gonna you're gonna have to. I mean, I'm gonna I'm gonna test your. I'm gonna put you to the test. Without you think some of these hot streaks all that one doesn't count. I'm sure that I'll have some if you got seven because I I did a lot searching house the congra- that's not going to take too much research. And I ended up I did a lottery did more for this episode that everyone say it's up there with Sundance speaking of which we lose sending a couple of weeks very excited about that. I'm sure also for our patriarchal, I know some of you are new patriots scribes because we are doing more. And I finally got that patriot app. And I'm doing those they call call call them lens video little videos little snippets almost are doing this. So I've done three so far. And what you do is you go over, and if you're a patriot member I'll as you do like samba just jerked it is that what? Popstar never stop stopping jerk session or whatever. The film ball ones are all Africa's Esther wants to that are very random as you can imagine that for the film. What you do is you get the patriot app. First of all. And then you log in a lot of money zero that's free. But if you're five dollar or more patriotic member of this program, you can get little what I've been doing alma, Wayne, the theaters on my way out of feeders things that I'm upset about or just thinking about you, all they're all I got is one just now on the way in here promising myself to be a nice boy because it was one of my one of my New Year's resolutions to and I'm like it was kind of pep talk to myself under put it up on. The patriot laugher mation Logan was also saying that if the best way to listen to the bonus content, whether it be spoiler episodes. Yeah. Whatever's on patriots nice and easy way to play them. Okay. I like that. I start doing these two this brand how about when we do going into the movie or come out of the movie, you know, a little ten second thought or whatever pre flick shins. It's kind of that's been used. Okay. Plenty times three fashions. Well, I mean, we can use. But don't act like you're branding that. "This year, we don't necessarily know how they're gonna check to like a swing like Filipinos formation to the boundary. I couldn't find it anywhere. I went to four games of film trying to find good twelve personnel rents very limited. Right. And so we're not necessarily going to check. So if you figure out how they're going to check in game will then you can start setting up formation of motion. So as to ensure you get al-shabaab backside and then to me every third and five plus is three by one set alshon to the backside. And if they're going to give us an were given the football. I tweeted this out the eagles win this game. L Sean Jeffey has more than a hundred yards receiving period. I would be shocked if the eagles win this and Sean doesn't have a big game. He needs to for the way that they are going to. When you run match coverage match coverage is not designed to take away the outside receiver match coverages designed to take away. The inside receivers the tight ends. The slots those guys who are going to struggle with match coverage because no matter which way, they go. There's going to be a defender. Waiting for them. That's the point of the match they wait until you break. And then they cover you know, which direction you're heading the outside receivers is late coverages. So even though Philadelphia's been running office personnel, and their titles would very strong, and they're still gonna give they're still going to be fine. The little stuff whatever the big players are gonna come on the outside, Sean Jeffrey and the Nelson to a smaller extent as well. Al-shabaab got to be the one who wins in that regard. So yeah, the jet motion to hold Khalil Mack. But if they spend into it, you got the backside match if you want to be able to on those place to interesting notes on that one of the follow up on what you said, the twelve personnel. I saw the same thing. We're seeing statistics out there that are saying that the bears have seen either the least or close to the least amount of twelve percent of the snaps per sharp of balls. That's Warren sharp shot at one eight percent of the snaps. They've seen on defense. This season have come out of twelve personnel. They lead the league in snap seen as eleven personnel at seventy nine percent the next closest seventy-one. Let me tell you right now. I. I watch a one game of rice Callahan. I don't want him playing eleven personnel. Do the stud. I don't get it Asia. Namus Eddie Jackson. You wanna be working inside that not society are exposed Danny trevathan coverage. He's the only one who's bad in coverage. That's it because they have linebackers that can cover two. We'll we'll talk about that. And the other thing I wanted to talk about was that checking to when you see copper wine, and you see a one on one coverage on the backside with house on Jeffrey, our our friend, Marc Scofield who is my co host on the QB SCO show here on bleeding green nation just wrote oppose for pro football weekly. And I got a chance to look at that. And it's funny. He sent me to gifts before he published that peace and both gifts are Nick foles looking out to Al Sean Jeffrey. Yes, putting his open palm down to his right with his right hand taking the snap. And then throwing it to Sean Jeffrey, he's giving the signal of this is you, bud. This is all you. If you go to my falls post on bleeding relation. I talk about the. Faith rose at Nichols ability to make it how he's willing to use his outside receivers in one on coverage. The there's a third down conversion against the Rams I'm for like twenty six yards. It was a huge like gas lighting play for eagles Twitter. This was when we were in the throes like Zakar get ninety five targets game. I'll gets three and big downfield target. And if you watched foles Nick foles looks up at the stat and looks alshon and looks back at the defense like your UC. It's just it's just to leave. There's no way anybody else coming over. And then he's like, yeah..

Like I, I remember I remember I don't remember Joe Namus as jets player, but I mean, I know Joe Nemeth was a football legend. I don't know how great Joe Nemeth was at Alabama off the top of my head. Well, in bear Bryant's offense. I don't think they look, nobody put up stats away quarterback stats now, like what? I, I don't know if Ken stabler was better. I don't know if Bart Starr was better. Like I just off top of my head. I don't know that. Violate any Davis with that question. And I'm gonna say we look up Jimmy. Okay. Wanna hear Joe Nemeth scholar stats. Sure. He played three years in he completed a fifty four point. Three percent of his passes for this is his three or total. Now two thousand seven hundred thirteen yards. Twenty four touchdowns and twenty interceptions yeah, here's the. Here's the problem with some of the stuff. It is so skewed. I'm gonna rattle off the top ten passing leaders of Alabama history. They're all almost all guy is you've been around in our in our careers. Yeah. I mean, I think the answer before it would be AJ McCarron right? It goes AJ McCarron John Parker Wilson Brody Crowell Andrews Zahle McElroy j. Barker Scott hunter who is before us, but I remember him a little bit. The NFL Jalen hurts Freddie kitchens and Walter Lewis, where I remember as. As a kid watching some I'm gonna make the this might get me on the hot take all fame, but the row don't do it. His career tour is already the best quarterback albums ever have. All right, fine. He's the best quarterback in the sport right now. Can we say. Have a better backs. He's the most talented quarterback that Alabama's the most talented border back obvious ins as well sounds a quarterback they've had since I've covered the sport. I don't wanna go pass. Never ninety is the most everyone quarter he is. He is, you know, headed on the track to be all Americans lashed Heisman candidate slash. So he's more talented than Joe Nemeth or Ken stabler. That's more talented guys. You studied up close. You spent hours studying in a dark room at three in the morning with a Cup of coffee in a pack of newports by just college players in general, are more physically gifted than they were in the nineteen sixties. I'm sorry if this is the part where you tell me Eric Dungy's more talented than Jim Brown. We're gonna end this podcast right now that is such a strain. Where did you. Would that because we were talking Syracuse and you're just crapping all over guys from like the sixties and seventies and fifties. And yes, sometimes generational talents or generational talent. So you is a generational talent. By the way, this is coming from somebody who is not ready to buy into the hype after just the national championship game was one half. Let's see how he does after that. They guy you're the most incredible to us. That is right now. Let me load up. Chris means always excellent nineteen stats from the weekend. So I get this right, ready for this. Just about two on third downs. This season is thirteen thirteen for two hundred ninety eight yards and six touchdowns on third downs. Yes.
