AJ's Childhood Was Shaped by the Egos of New York Sporting Heros
"And sometimes I think, no, sometimes I know my childhood was shaped by the egos of the athletes and the legends who played for New York teams. And made their predictions come true. Put it that way. Imagine I'm a young kid, right? You know, what the fuck was I? Ten years old, 9 years old. I'm wearing a Joe Namath, New York jet, Jersey, and then he tells the world that he's gonna beat the Baltimore colts in the Super Bowl, and when he did exactly that, what do you think that did to a little boy like me? What do you think, what do you think? I don't know what part of the country you're from, wherever you're listening, you could be from another part of the world. But if you were from New York during my era, let's call it 19 70 to 1990 or whatever. We had some big gigantic egos that fueled our New York teams. And by doing that, they fueled a lot of boys like me. Then what do you think ego meant to me back then? It clearly meant that it was something that I had to possess to achieve the impossible because I saw my heroes doing it.

"That's where, if you say, okay, I just want somebody to tell me why is Nick Foles not playing? I mean, I'm not making him out to be Joe Namath here, but he does have success. And he has success in the Super Bowl. And I just think that guy's at least proven. You got a statue. Yeah. And more importantly. He's got a statue of himself. That's how good he is. Yeah. And Matt Ryan is a statue. Yeah. And he's slower than his statue. Yeah. But I just keep going, all right, what's going on here? Because you're not going to play Nick Foles. All right, we'll talk to Steve Tasker about what's going on with the Buffalo Bills. Yes, he was there something else you wanted to add. Oh, no, I was just ready to go down the rest of the poll question. But we could move on. Oh, okay. Whatever you want to do. The rest of the rest of the poll question with backup quarterbacks? Yeah, yeah, 'cause we really just got to the two. We could just do those two options if you don't know there's other teams. Teddy Bridgewater, the dolphins. I love chatting. He's high end. We have now, where do you put people like, say, Jacoby Brissette? He's kind of a backup, but he's a starting backup right now. Or Jimmy Garoppolo is a backup quarterback. But he's starting. I think this is current situations. It's fluid, like a grapple is now the starter and will be the backup. Yeah. And then we're probably going to go to the backup with rims. If Matthew Stafford wofford, John wofford, instead of Matthew Stafford. Eagles, your boy, Gardner minshew. I think Gardner minshew is a starter in this league. I do. You know, what if we kept it there? Bill's cold dolphins eagles. Sure. Why not, right? Why not? Yeah. You can do whatever we want. There's no rules. No, it's my show. I can do whatever I want. You make it up. And people think it's scripted, so we've already, you know, we know the results of this when it's all said and done, don't we? Hold on. Are you ready? Yes, we do. That's true. It's like a screenplay that the dynamics get every morning. And they have their lines there that have been scripted out. We got some writers from Hollywood who help out. Ten 45 fritzi chokes on himself a little bit and everyone laughs. Yeah. That'll be coming up a little bit later on. We'll get to your phone calls, emails, tweets, before we take a break. A person I worked with at CNN many, many years ago, Fred hickman passed away, and Freddie was 66 years of age. I know there have been a lot of tribute so I can only tell you firsthand what it was like to be with him and Nick Charles. But I don't even know. Is that the title of the song? I just want to bang on the drums all day. I don't even know the title of it. I'd be bang on the drum. Bang on the drum? Yeah, bang on the drum all day, Todd Reddit. But don't people get they make the mistake with Baba o'riley where teenage wasteland wasteland. I love when they play teenage lateline. That's a great song. Do you have, do you have the I just want to bang on the drum all day there, Marvin? I thought that'd be the cue for you. Yeah, thank you. Now you are. I would rather not work. What about greatest acting one hit wonders? I got one. Crocodile Dundee Paul Hogan. Okay. I don't know his second best movie that's not crocodile Dundee two or three. Was he in other stuff I don't know. Okay. I'm gonna guess no. Yeah, so how about Mark Hamill? Star Wars. He never really did anything after that, did he? No. That's a pretty good one. About Gilligan from Gilligan's island? Strong. Okay. Yes, Todd, you got one? Some of those Star Trek characters. Here we go. Wait, hold on, here we go. Here we go. I heard it. I don't know what the instrument is. But I'm having a damn good time. Is this an organ? Are you just happy to see me? Todd Rundgren, Friday at 5. Here we go. Yeah. Come on. Who's not having a good time? All right. Other one hit wonders. I did see a list that had Joe Namath on there as a one hit wonder, which I think that's stretching. Is Tim Tebow? One hit wonder. Too long of a hit. His hit was too long. It was four years. Plus the NFL, he had like a 6 year window relevance. Okay. Let's see. I'm up for an actor. Edward Furlong. Terminator two? I'm not familiar with his other work. How about icky wood? Icky shuffle? This is a funny one. A guy named Alex Winter. He was the other guy in Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure. Okay. Okay. He's dunkleman to Seacrest. Too soon. He had it. He had it. I know. I know. But does that work Seacrest just said, I'll take it from here. Or did dunkleman say, you know what? I don't think we're going anywhere. This isn't part of my art, my journey, my craft. My million. Leon Spinks. Lance spinks, one hit wonder? Mark fidge marked the bird fidget with the tigers? He was great for it felt like two year rookie of the year, mid 70s, David Tyree buster Douglas, anybody else that we're missing. I have an actor. Remember the actor young kid who played the journalist in almost famous? Yeah. He was really good in that movie, I thought. Yeah. Everyone loves a movie, Cameron Crowe. Yeah. I don't know what he's done since. I'm sure he's been in some movies, but he really nailed that role. And how about the Jesse Eisenberg? He's been in a few things. But social network is, there is no second on his list as far as what he's known for. Yeah. Well, that's where the one is so big that no matter what you do, you're not going to read. Like Haley Joel Osment. You know, he might have been in other things, but he'll never taught that. We might be underappreciated zombieland one and two. With Jesse has. Oh, okay. I would never. Yes, Marv. What about Jamal Anderson that 98 falcons team? He was on fire for that one year. The dirty bird? Yep. And it's always a dance. Like Iggy Woods had icky shuffle. Yeah. Icky shuffle. And then icky, after his career was over, would deliver meat to your door in Cincinnati? I think he went door to door and he would do the icky shuffle. I think. I'd sign up for that. Yeah, so like a club like a meat club. Yeah. Don't deliver your meat. And he would do the icky shuffle. Yes, Don. He's in some commercial, I don't know if it's for insurance or whatever, but they call number 60 two. He said, that's me. 62 would pick up the meat. The inky shuffle in the supermarket's pretty funny. It was a big deal. Yeah, see. I didn't realize this, but Mark Hamill has quite a fan base. Uh oh. Actually, he's quite an accomplished voice actor. I hope you know. We're not making fun of our camera. He's one of the biggest franchises movies. He's one of the best characters of all time. Too late scene. It's like I said something about Taylor swift. If you say something about her, then I'm mad at you. Yes. I wonder who's had the biggest hits so far away. Look at Henry Winkler was a font. It's one of the most famous actors in America in the 70s, but now he's on Barry and he's getting like, it's like his book ending his career with a really good role. Barry is so good I started watching season one again. And I said to Bill Hader, because I texted him, I said, hey, just getting in character. I rewatching season one of Barry. And he said, I promise I'm going to get you in season four. I said, okay. I don't know what role, but bearing. I hope she's in four gets picked up. That's going to be awkward if I'm like, hey. How are we doing? We didn't get picked up. Let's see. Alberto in Chicago. Alberto? Hey, how you doing? Good. Now that you're just talking about berries, I've got two berries for you from the early 90s running backs Barry word. Oh. Yeah. Barry foster. Baylor's in the chiefs. How about Christian oye? The Nigerian nightmare. Azusa Pacific. That early 90s. Oh yeah. I love me some Christian okoye. That early 90s Kansas City Chiefs with Barry word to your mother and Christian okoye. Word up. Yeah, that was a fun short run. Yeah. Let's see. Keith and Portland, hi Keith, what's on your mind today? Hey, just some of those funny names. Yeah. 25 years ago, we had this guy in our HR department. And we won a prize off of radio station, his actual name was dick puffer. Dick puffer, okay? I'd go by Ricky puffer. It's like a pothead. You a pothead puffer? I think I'd go with my middle name. I think. Unless he's got, I don't know what would be worse than dick puffer. Let's see what else do we have. David in Virginia. Hi David, what's on your mind today? Hey, good morning, Dan. Good morning. Tell us. Yeah. True story, so teacher way back in the day by the time I got her, she was soon her 60s. And the way she liked to pronounce it was miss rockson box. But of course everyone else and Virginia with the accent. It was rotten box. Well, there you go. All right. Thank you, David.

"Hey, Keith, can you have a mobile camera with you? Can we just walk down the hall and find the culprit? Yeah, I'd love to see that. I'm watching. Let's have it. Let's have it, man. I don't think we're going. I don't think I hear it anymore. No, you know, yesterday, for example, I thought, was that on the phone with the collar? But now I was on every car you had to I knew I had to be on your part of it because it wasn't on the car's part. I think we have rectified the situation, Jim. Well, at least I had a crazy show again. It took Keith because nobody keeps a professional wrestler. He's behind the camera right now. Nobody's messing. Well, again, I had to save the show. I mean, is anybody going to mess with this guy right here? I thought, would you acknowledge I had to say the show one more time? This time I do owe you because you did say it. Well, we disagree on the name of these you because there's no way it can anywhere near us in anything in athletics period. Serious. I am trying to narrow the argument. I mean, I would take Joe name as overall, yes. I think he meant more to his team because I didn't Cam Newton for all the good things that he's done, and he was brilliant in 2015. I know people that are played with Cam Newton and he could be a problem as well. Joe Namath was never. Did he ever, I don't know this, but did he ever win a Super Bowl? No, he lost the only Super Bowl he's ever been in. One of the biggest moments he sought during the game and after the game about Cam Newton did a lot of damage to his career after that Super Bowl because he was non communicative of he had an opportunity late in the game to die for a fumble and he didn't. And I think and again, I'm not taking anything away that he had a really big career, but Joe Namath Hall of Famer, Cam Newton, I think will struggle in that regard. You better believe you're struggle. You better believe your struggle. It's not a great player. He had a good year. I want to thank you for saving the show. Well, I thought you owed me. How about send me a little cup or something? I mean, you told me we went down, you owe me a couple 100,000 for how I've done the show, but you won't ever send that, I know. Well, if you could ever accurately come up with a number that we owe you, then we'll negotiate. Okay, I'll tell you the number. I've had 30 people at least in the last ten years. Tell me this. And you probably heard it too. They say Paul OG millions for how you helped him get where he is. That's what I've heard. So I'm not going to ask for a million. I just asked for a couple at least 30 people, right? At least 30 people in the last ten years have told me that. I am going to sound like a lawyer here, Jim. But I need to because it's hard to get that kind of money. I'm going to ask you to get every one of those 30 people to swear to that. Well, you know, I can't do that because you know I can't because I emailed me or they have a conversation. You can tell you're good friends with your buddy. You suck up, buddy. Willard Willard from rat land, which is a Tennessee land, which is a dirty bunch of people. Yeah, William from right around Knoxville, we know where he is. Okay, well, Jim, I'm just asking, can you give me some of those names of some of those 30 people? Can you name me one of those people? I'll get back with you, okay? I know that's all right. Even allow you to do that. It sounds like a lawyer. Okay, thanks, and we're up against a break. I asked he answered. We were up against the break. We are going to get more to your phone calls right after this. Street games and they were almost like sport extensions of the block party. It wasn't just about basketball. It's about culture. "Blake bortles. And they went from like three wins to ten and 6, like who saw that. And you know what that was that was like, there were defensive there was a defensive coach, which I think Robert Solis is a great pairing because I love his offensive system that he has with before. I think he'll get better. As a play caller, he obviously was a young guy doing that last year. So he'll get Bill improved. I love the system, but I think that Yahoo Solomon Thomas, you had some of the pieces on the defensive, so I didn't play great towards the end of the year on defense, but they will play better. Robert will put together a great defense. And so those kind of jumps happen. They just randomly happen. So it doesn't, I mean, it's not like something that you're going to say, you're not pencil in the jets for 12 wins. But you know what? They could do it. They could easily do it because that kid is fearless. Zach Wilson is absolutely fearless. So for me, I'd roll the dice and that's why I said what I said the other day. It was Joe Namath and we were talking about how he guaranteed the victory and I just said, you know what the jets are. I've been high on the jets since the draft. Obviously since watching their young players play, I love Robert sala and maybe maybe I'm a little biased there, but I like a lot of their pieces. So I'm excited to watch them play football this year. David Carr, my colleague from the NFL media group NFL total access 11 year vet and the NFL joining me here on the rich eisen show. We just talked about how deep the AFC is this year, no deeper pool than the AFC west easily the toughest division in football. Now that Russell Wilson is there and so many other new additions from Khalil Mack and JC Jackson and we all know how many people have entered this division, Kansas City, less tyreek hill, but so on and so forth, they have gotten a ton of talent on their team. That said, David, do you know who I have chosen to beat all of them in the AFC west this year? Are you aware of that? If we're vibing the way I think that we are. But I'm going to hope that you're speaking about a team in Las Vegas. I am speaking about a team in Las Vegas. And I've gotten a ton of crap for it. But I for putting the jets in the playoffs, rich. You know what? I don't know if we understand if we knew we're scratching each other's backs in a way, David, but we kind of are. Because I do love the addition of Chandler Jones to go with max Crosby. And then devonte Adams to hook up with your brother again. It's such a rarity to have a quarterback wide receiver relationship that's new, but not new at all, right? So a rare and it's been something that they've tried to make happen for 5 years now since Devante signed his contract extension several years ago with the packers. Derek was pushing to get him there and devonte was really close, man. I mean, a couple of years ago, they were really close to making that happen. And so for it to actually happen. I remember I was sitting on, I was actually sitting on set at the end of a network when it went through with James Jones. And James was obviously sad because he's a packer. Right. But it was almost surreal because like you said, it never really happens that you absolutely get to pull off something like this where guys that have known each other since they were essentially teenagers get to play. And obviously you've gotten to the points they've gotten your career and now find themselves back together. I look at the Raiders and to kind of validate your point. When I try to look at them, you know, just objectively like how is this how is this going to work out? And from a quarterback standpoint, I always look at match ups. That's what this league is and we hear that all the time, but it literally that's what it comes down to. And so you already have in foster rose said this to me the other day. He was out here working out with some of the kids in our high school team and he was out on the field right here, about a hundred feet from at and he said, you already have two guys that are basically unguardable. Hunter Renfro and Darren Waller. They just the unique matchup issues for the defense. And now you add devonta Adams. How do you cover them down? So that's the main issue. And Derek's as good as anybody. If he has a quality that is elite, it for me, it's the ability to recognize what the defense is in, what they're trying to do and get the ball as quickly as possible to his best matchup. And that's what he does. And now he's loaded with an offensive play caller that that's all they've done for 20 years is find matchups and exploit them. So I don't necessarily see a situation where the Raiders are going to go into a game and not have a favorable matchup on the outside. So anything can happen, the trench is obviously full Mac and the charges have done up front. I mean, they're a formidable. So they're going to have to protect, but I mean, from just a play, player standpoint, I love their chances against the biggest anybody. So why does your brother and devonte Adams vibe so well, do you think? I mean, because again, you knowing their history and how much they mean to each other personally, you might be you might have been one of the few people not totally shocked that Devante Adams leaves Green Bay and Aaron Rodgers and back to back MVP seasons to go to a totally new spot. So fill in some of the blanks if you don't mind. No problem. I mean, well, I think that from the moment that they got together in Fresno, it was a unique situation because devonte devonte came to Fresno and visited there and basically signed the president's day because of Derek. And so from the moment that they met on his recruiting trip, they hit it off. They just have a unique bond and their best friends and devonte even before they made the move to Vegas. So first of all, in the Bay Area, he bought a house right next to Derek. They worked out in the off season, they trained together, even when devonta was Green Bay, same thing. Derek moved to Vegas, devonte moves to Vegas, and this was about a month before the whole thing went down where he joined up. So they just had a unique bond. They've always gotten gotten along well. I mean, and then the chemistry on the field is, I think the biggest thing. So there's guys that are quarterback friendly from a wider cheaper perspective. There's guys that you like to throw to. But then there's like this different levels that these guys have always had. And I asked Derek after their first workout. As official teammates, again, we Las Vegas. He's driving back home. And they're both in the car together. They FaceTimed. And so I said, how'd it go? And Derek's like, every ball is 6 inches in front of his chest. It's just a natural thing. So he understands devonte. They also share that affinity for Devante is very confident. He's very confident receiver and Derek every receiver that Derek has ever talked to me about he's compared to devonta Adams. Every receiver. He's like, he does this like Devante. It's always been that way. So I think that's the biggest thing. They have affinity for each other's ability. Derek loves devonta athleticism has always felt like he's hands down the best receiver he's ever played with. He said that since he was 19 years old and it hasn't changed a decade later. So I'm excited to see these guys play together man. It's going to be it's going to be awesome. I'm excited for the country because when they're at Fresno, a lot of people saw them play. But I'm excited for the actual NFL family and community to get a chance to watch these guys because it's going to be a blast. Wow. David Carr here on the rich eisen show..

"Throw a fantasy football bleak? Jock Peterson slapped by Tommy Pham of the Cincinnati reds. Will Smith style. Wow, dude. Earlier on the show. From NBC sports Boston, Tom Curran. Still to come. NFL network insider, Ian rappaport. Plus NFL network analyst, David Carr. And now. It's rich ice cream. Our number two of the rich eisen show on the air my colleague David Carr from the NFL network is going to be joining us in about 20 minutes time to back his statement yesterday and support of the 79th birthday of Joe Namath making a guarantee on NFL network that the jets are going to make the playoffs and I need to kick the tires on that a little bit. Also see if inside he can give me to see if I'm smart to place my full faith and football credit on the Las Vegas Raiders to win the AFC west this year despite the significant improvements. Made in Denver and right here in Los Angeles with the Chargers and the chief still being the chiefs despite Tyree kill wearing a dolphin uniform. You're going to battle with the Raiders. Right now I feel it. As long as they stay healthy going into the season. You got Darren Waller. It's tough to guard him. Tough to guard him right away. You got Renfro moving the chains. First and Renfro, right? So it is called or is he third Renfro? What do we call him? What's his nickname? I don't know. You call him third and Renfro? So what it is? Because he creates first down. Third and Renfro is what it is. Okay. So you got him on third down. It's tough to guard him. Oh, and then they added devonte Adams, right? Oh, heard of him. Right. And then max Crosby has all probability, right? That kid, right? Now you're adding a 100 sack career guy and Chandler Jones to the other side, right? Right? If I'm not mistaken, he's there. Okay. Josh mcdaniel is calling the place. He's going to be there. Got it. Okay. Got it. We talked about now or one with Tom Cohn who's calling the police and New England once this season hits, not like now mini camp plays. What's that mean? For the Patriots. Well, that guy is now in Vegas. So we'll kick the tires on that with Derek Carr when he joins us in about 18 minutes time. So did I say Derek, I keep doing that, don't I? David Carr is going to join us here on the program. David, just don't do it always on. Some stupid. Well, I mean, they're both David. I know but I know, I know who I'm talking about. The first name. I just lose myself in David's dreamy hairline. Kill for that hair. Yeah, tell me about it. So David Carr is going to join us in about 17 minutes time right here on the program. So a couple of weeks ago. Boy, this is all we talked about. The statement that Nick Saban said in front of business folk in Birmingham, Alabama, that hey, you know, the NIL world is crazy. It's topsy turvy. It's nuts. It's wild wild west, and you know, we're still about the student athlete here and giving people the best opportunity to succeed, not just on the football field, but as an athlete and then he went deeper into the problems of the NIL world. And then start a name and names. Including that of Texas in them said they bought their players and their current recruiting class ranked number one bought all their players. What he said. That's the phrase that he used and that set off a whole to do, say to the least, when Jimbo Fisher stepped to the podium in College Station, the very next day and just laid waste. I mean, I think we had the exclusive soundbite of him stepping to the podium back in that day and telling everyone to say hello to their little friend. I think I deleted that one. Why would you do that? I got space this space that you know, it's not a one day thing. It's not a one day thing. I think we should have that from now on. Any coach that steps to the podium and lays waste to anybody who's just say hello to my little friend. Say hello. Well, so and then Greg sankey, the SEC commissioner said, hey, everybody piped down. Pipe down and we'll get together and start talking about solutions. The solutions isn't to name call and save and went on the radio the next day and said he shouldn't have named names and he apologized and Fisher saying he's not ever talking to Saban again and won't even take his call. I don't even take his call. 'cause he's got like you walk ask God walks on water, what he's done in his career and so on and so forth. Fully intimated that Sabin's a cheater. Well, the SEC coaches gathering the spring gathering first in person gathering for this group of head coaches went down in the state of Florida yesterday. And they met in a room together, lane kiffin was the first one to hit the microphones, by the way. They opened the doors, minutes after the doors of the hotel conference room swung open. This is according to Mike rodak of Alabama dot com. Minutes after the doors of the hotel conference room swung open, lane kiffin stepped to a lectern and said, I guess the best way to describe it is our group is more professional.

"A bit behind the lead pack, but ahead of the second pack, and he just kind of waited for Cameron wurf to catch up to him and paste himself off of Cameron. Got off the bike and then just killed the run. Just crushed it. I mean, he was what was he like four minutes back on the bike four and a half minute, four 46 behind. Finished almost 5 minutes clear. Did his, I think he did a two 38. He just worked his way through the pack. I don't think he took the lead until mile 18. That's right. And he averaged 6 O two miles running 6 O two per month. 5 20 miles around mile 20. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. And the amazing thing about all of this is that he did it with a virus. Like he was not a 100%. No. I mean, his coach said he was 90%. Gustav couldn't even start. Right. Yeah, they had the same thing. And didn't Olaf say that if it hadn't been the world championship, he wouldn't he wouldn't have started. And he vomited right before the race and vomited afterwards. He looked like he was vomiting right at the end, right? When he got there, yeah. Yeah, Olaf said that he would not have started him if it wasn't the world championship, but then the fact that he rocked it so hard. I mean, I just love the way he finishes these races. He shows so much emotion. The same thing in Tokyo and just like, you know, he wants to be the best. And it's fun to see an athlete that admits that. And then these guys called their shot. Olav had said in the article I wrote about these guys that it's going to be like taking candy from a baby to win the Iron Man world championship. I mean, that's huge words for someone who at that point hadn't even done a full distance race yet. Yeah. And so to see that kind of, I guess you have to go back for old timers. Joe Namath and that kind of thing, like the Babe Ruth, call your shot. It just doesn't happen. It's very rare that it happens. Commentators do it, but athletes tend not to do it. And coaches tend not to do it, but they did it, and they backed it up. It's pretty amazing. Right. When you say it out loud, and then you back it up. It's amazing. It makes for a pretty great story. And I think this is just the beginning. I think so too. It certainly is setting up that way is 26 years old, I believe. And then gustave is also right there. And we'll see what he's got. I mean, shout out to Lionel Sanders for an amazing finish. I mean, just an incredible he's an animal. And it's crazy that he can run as well as he does because he's got this wacky form. Yeah, I love it. I love his form. He's got an amazing backstory. I've been trying to get him on the podcast forever. Because his backstory is unbelievable. And now he spends a lot of time training in Arizona, but he's from Canada and traditionally he spends most of the year in his basement where he has an infinity pool and a treadmill and his bike on a trainer, and he never leaves this tiny room, and he does all of his training. And his base like in a small pool with like a treadmill. Yeah, you know those little pools where they have a circular current or whatever. So it's literally like this setup that's just, you know, in this room, essentially, no, no, in Canada, Canada. Where it's inclement, most of the time, you can't ride outdoors. So when it's snowing outside, he's just in this room for like 9 hours a day. Crazy training. Now he does, I think he spends time in Palm Springs and in Arizona he does lots of camps there. So I don't know how much he's doing that now, but there are these amazing videos that tell the Cox made way back in the day. They are like a day in the life of Lionel Sanders, and he's just in this room. Just like, and he could suffer, you know, he just pushes himself clearly. So hard. Clearly. Also, shout out to Cameron, we're this guy for people who don't know. It's just an extraordinary athlete. He is a pro cyclist, a domestique for ineos. And he's been living in Europe, riding races for this team. And he just got back from racing Paris Roubaix where he helped his team win. He was the domestique supporting Dylan van Burrell, who took the win and left that and just goes right to saint George to compete in the Iron Man world championships. He's like, I haven't swam at all. He hasn't been focused on Iron Man really at all. And shout out to Cameron for being a semi Calabasas native. He spends a lot of time out here training. He was out here training with Garrett Thomas, who was the 2018 Tour de France winner. So he's a bit of a temporary local out in these parts. Nice. And if you're out riding your bike, you probably have seen him riding around. Get him into the studio. I'd love to have him on. So Cameron, if you're listening next time, he's swing through LA. Let's make that happen. Shout out also, well, two other one last thing on Christian. He's the first to ever win the Olympic gold and the Iron Man title in a calendar year. Right. So that's amazing, only the second ever to have both, but I think there was several years between Jan winning the gold and then winning the Iron Man. So it doesn't usually happen that quickly happen for them. Shout out to daniela ree for 5th world title. She finished an 8 hours and 34 minutes. Third most titles ever. On the woman's side, she won by almost 9 minutes. Right. And in the women's race, the big omission was Lucy Charles Barkley who did not compete due to an injury. So awesome, why don't we pivot now to our call with Christian and his coach? Oh, love Alexander boo. Live from the Denver airport. There they are. The champion. How are you guys doing?.

"Given, not even close, right? And I don't think that that feeling right now around here. It's just not a good feeling right now. I mean, there's major losses this week and I don't think we really know the extent of fournette and Mike Evans and how and when they'll be able to come back and at what capacity, right? So, yeah, I think there's major question marks and I don't think that there is this like, yeah, we're going to skate on through and it's going to look like last year. I think it's going to be far more challenging than it was a year ago at this time, even having the experience of being together longer. I know you're going to run to the facility. I just want to remind everybody to follow Sarah Walsh on Instagram, Sarah Walsh ten. What is that your soccer number from college? Yeah, it's not going to work. No, like, in 7th grade, I'm my whole life. Every once in a while when someone took ten, it was like a big problem, you know? Freshman year of college, someone took ten, big problem for me. So you still have it in there. It's a little braggy. No, what do you mean? What do I have what in there? That tends my number? Well, you know, like, hey, I played sports. Is it bragging? I didn't say I played well. Is it bragging to say sports? I was asking, I wasn't confirmed. I'm not. It's an open ended. And you can see her awesome twins. The videos alone are worth follow. When you look at so. I do. I like your kids. I like kids. Everybody knows I like kids. Just not that much to buy a couple. You know? Yeah, no, you're actually a really good with kids. Kids love me. Yeah, they do love you. They like climbing on you. Remind you. Yeah, I mean, I would say of the two I'm ranked higher with your daughter than your son. But I don't know it's been a while, so. It has been a while. Yes. Down here this oxygen. You're just very busy. Yeah, I saw a jet ski conference down there that I was interested in. Buying one just attention. Guys just put on their hats and polos and talk about their jet skis and stuff. And I was like, that's something Tuesday, jet ski conference in Tampa. That would be funny to go to. Like for our entertainment purposes and be like really fully invested in jets decompositions. I'll go. When I went to Disney, one of the 6 times by myself and I hosted the Joe Namath of thing because I think greenie pulled out in like 7 other people. But you knew when ESPN was like, is there any way you can fly like today to Disney to host a sync with Joe Namath? And apparently Joe Namath also was like on his way to Disney to host this thing for ESPN radio. And then his guy last minute was like, hey, Joe doesn't want to come, and they were like, all right, we'll double it. And we're like, okay, see you in a few hours. They knew the play. Have it all mapped out, have the whole thing set, and then at the last minute you're going to pull out and then see what kind of money you can get. It's called the Snoop Dogg. And so then I flew down and then it was, I think the thing was the next day, so they put me in the princess suite. Yeah, the yacht, whatever they call it like whatever the peers are by the water part. There's like a yacht section or whatever. So I go, all right, you know what, I'm gonna go out for just a little bit just to see what it's like mid week. And I went to not jelly roll, the dueling pianos. I went to this other club. And it was all like people on a corporate retreat. And I think it was for C two or ski to forget. And these people were fucking tanked because they were just like right, they were let loose, Sean Paul was going and people like adults were just making out. And it wasn't even midnight. It was hilarious. And I went back to my princess suite. So there you go. Jessica conference coming up. I know I got to double check the dos here because yeah, they're C do, is it both? Is ski do the one that's in the snow? You know how it makes sense. It makes sense. The one in the water? Well, here's the deal. Both are accurate. You're right about terrain. I think it was pretty self explanatory, so I feel a little out loud stupid right now. But what I'm saying is I don't remember who's conference it was. So if it's a C two person that doesn't like that I'm branding the company is some wild orgy at the Disney yacht club. It could have been ski to. I forget who was what? I just remember everybody was wearing their shirts and everybody had all their company hats on and it was a free for all. It was just like people you could tell. This is the one year you get away from everybody. I can tell. And there you go. Did you ask anyone to come back to your princess suite? No, I had like, I don't even think I had a full course light. And I was like, I'm out of here. I'm out of here. And I had stuff to do. I had an interview Joe Namath the next day I had to be hot, had to be fresh. All right, thank you, Sarah. See.

So it's kind of interesting to see someone like Lady Gaga celebrating another artist that is who she'll say is bigger than her, which is Britney Spears. So the big news on Friday, Britney Spears conservatorship comes to an end after 13 years, Brittany is free, hashtag free Britney. Everybody took to the streets. Lady Gaga jumped on Instagram with a picture of Britney Spears that she had from I believe the VMAs and a few other events that they've come together. And she goes, I have loved Britney Spears, her whole career. I looked up to her admired her for strength. She empowered so many people and still does. I couldn't be more happy for you today. You never deserved what happened. Thank God for today. That's what Lady Gaga put on the Instagram. And of course, many people love the fact of that and Britney Spears says I love my fans so much. It's crazy. And best day ever. So it's kind of interesting. It's kind of like day at this point. Day three of Britney's new life. What will happen? How will things work out for her? How will people watch how people treat her going forward? It will be a very, very interesting thing to sit back and watch and see what happens. Good for you. It's also two you forget Britney has been around so long. She started so young that she's had an impact on so many superstars lives, including Lady Gaga. You think of Lady Gaga and Britney as contemporaries. No, no, no. Britney was there a good ten 15 maybe 20 years before Gaga. And so to see somebody like Gaga, who might be one of the most respected people in the music business today to see her talk about Britney Spears, just goes to show you the impact Britney's had. It's easy to dismiss Britney as a pop princess as silly, no, no, no. Britney changed music change celebrities and even stars like Gaga are looking up to Britney Spears. They're nicest of the day and now our naughtiest of the day. Nori nori nori and naughtiest of the day is any one of us who has settled who has settled in live Chelsea handler is urging her fans to never settle. So she's paying a tribute to her new boyfriend who she said is somebody that has quote renewed her faith in men. She said the following quote, do you know how hot it is to have a man who's turned on by my honesty, my strength and my confidence? Someone who loves the fact that I'm not going to take anyone's SH, you know what? Any more is an intimidated or emasculated by my fairness. For anyone who is still looking for their person, I promise you they are out there. Be patient and never settle for anything less than you deserve your person is coming and sometimes they've been standing in front of you, your whole life. Don't settle people. If you settle, you'll never find the one because you'll be with somebody that you shouldn't be with. What do you think? You're not the second type. No, you want to be happy at the end of the day. It's so easy to say, like, I'll be happy and you really can't live it until you live in the moment. You know what I mean? Until that moment hit you, it's all just talk. And then all of a sudden you have that aha moment of, I get it, you know? There's someone listening right now. They would be like, whatever. Yeah, it's just talk. But until you experience it yourself, then you have that, wow, you know, Chelsea handler was right or rob Schurter when he was telling me, was right. So it'll happen. Do we all know, do we all know when? No. We don't. But eventually it will get Chelsea, took Chelsea really long time for this to happen to her. I have to admit before I met Bruce, I was dating a guy called Colin in Scotland. It wasn't right. He didn't make me happy. I didn't make him happy, but it was easier just to stay together. Right. Had I not have broken up with Colin, I would have never met Bruce. So everybody out there, the reason you haven't found your people, your tribe, your guy, your girl, might be because you're wasting time with people that just aren't the right people for you. So what rob is saying is if you're with someone break up with them right now if you always somebody that doesn't make you happy, honestly, you're not going to find anybody that's going to make you happy until you do it. That's what I think I'm saying. Yes. Hey quickly, let's have a moment of Rory. Before we go, you get a rob you get a rub, you get a rub. There was one time in my life where not an opportunity passed me by that I didn't use to make myself feel worse about myself. I used to always compare myself to people that were richer, more handsome, more popular and more perfect than me. Then the forward answer changed the way I started to look at my perceived imperfections and because of the forward answer, I realized, you know what? They're not imperfections. I am perfect. I know on performance there's a side of needed knows i'm onstage performing with in four people and that's the kind of oppression and it's a thrill we get on what we do it. Well it is. We don't feel good about it but we don't we don't want 'em up you know you go back after because you appreciate that opportunity and you enjoy. I enjoy it so much. So i had a chance to exercise Still being on the field whether the boards or in the theaters yet and test. Time to go out there. You know heart starts beating you back curtains you know you start getting excited getting adrenaline rush For several years in in that area was the blessing. And it wasn't. Because i thought about it it was about. I think it's so right like it's an adrenaline rush. It's the butterflies that you missed the game the first snap your under cer. I mean like you're playing tough defense and you're like oh man is going to be a heck of a game you get the first napper. I hit like those things. Like i think what you're saying is right like you get to go out and you wanna perform but like that you'll never like sometimes you just want somebody to hit you. Say okay i'm ready. Let's go at first game. When i was a sophomore starting against georgia. We didn't score on for his drive. Or whatever and i came over I was nervous. I swear i never been. I've never felt that kind of pressure before nervousness whatever Leaving the locker room going on a rant man. My head was pounding it though bad. How was so tense. Every i had was hounding we got down to the bottom of that runway started go onto field and the data million dollar alabama band started plan. Dixie you talking about getting fired up and going out there you know and it will first quarter. I play well. And i come off the field doing yeoman down on on the bench there and i sit down and coach brand comes oh. He sits down beside he puts his hand up on the back of my neck ear and he starts squeeze in my neck. Boy if you ever come off the field like that again. I'm gonna kick your ass fact the pennsylvania's for you note and i trust the coach. I'm not pissed off at you or anybody else does offer myself. And he just looked at okay and he got up and left. But that was the truth. I was i was anger myself. Man and and again we went out there and we won that game the pressure. It's fine that's the adrenaline we launch. But then have chance to get feedback that is literally people smiling enjoying hill. Please everybody would never gonna please. Everybody know ally but we'll give it a shot right exactly exact so joe. Tell us what you're like. When there was a calming down before this delta's ahead come up and been vaccinated at all. I was Went up to present an award at the aesthete's in new york. You know fly in stayed in a hotel. Man did guy in and out. But i just use the hologram of you like at the hall of fame when you come out in the locker room your favorite things. I love i go when i take people over. 'cause you know we're in pittsburgh we're not that far. And i said you gotta see. Joe come out in the holographic image. It is so cool in that locker room. That's a wonderful spot man that guess. "We were lucky hours. Lucky i look at. I all of your career guys. I don't know how man i wouldn't have been able to make the transitions. I don't think you were able to make. She had play for chuck. Knox with the latte loss. Ram and i love chuck and his wife surely man. I met him when he was a junior high basketball coach in elworthy benson main junior high basketball coach. Yes yes and he went on of course to become head. Coaching pro ball but he was also the offensive line coach. New york jets when they were recruiting me or talking lay informed him so we had a few years together with the jets and one of the things that i was kind of felt bad about the judge. He left us. He moved onto a board pain. Job you know better. These guys make a lot of money in all So chuck had moved right right after our third year. Maybe two buffalo. And we got joe spencer with the heck of an offensive line coach. Who and we win the super bowl championship at year. So i wish chuck it bene- part of that. He was a part of it but he just wasn't there at that time. While you know. I think everybody moves on. And that's the hardest part of sports right that you feel like so like when i was in washington. I had my quarterback. Coach was cam cameron and cameron. I were just in sync. Everything i knew like he taught me so well and i respected him so much and then he moved on to take a head coaching job somewhere else. And you feel like it's probably like when you left. We've or when he retired right. You lose that part and you're trying to find it again. It's really hard to do. It is hard to do and if it were easy anybody could do it out aside haven because it's hard as me. We won't try to do it all of that story. That's true so i have A question from a friend of mine. His name is steve. Can't steve has been the voice of washington their basketball team. You know it's been. They've had a couple of names. But i've known him since i played with the redskins so i was texting the other day. And tell them that you're gonna come on. He said got jobs like one of the only guys he's interviewed. He knows all the guys sunny. Sam a buddy your them. Also i said what would you ask joe and he said. Can you ask joe for me where he got the confidence to guarantee that they would win that super bowl. That's what i always wanted to ask him at. So that's my that. Steve buck ants. Down in dc when it asked you that question. If you don't think you can annual that was monitoring first thing coach. Brad told her school. Rallying what what are we gonna go. I was teed off actually but did say thank god for two weeks. The media people were talent. Everything you couldn't avoid seeing it or hearing it with the rates being high number your underdog like this at all I and a guy it again. In miami touchdown club banquet. I leaving a thing. They recognize the. I was down there with our media. Director frank ramos. God bless boys around but franken our down there and as i get up to the podium guys back at rule y'all's we're gonna kick your so low. Wait a minute listened and after two three weeks. I got news for you buddy. We're gonna win the game. Guaranteed and i was. I was at him like arm. Telling the world this guy right here we all. And that's whatever came out and you can imagine gusts. Nah look on frank's face afraid. I didn't look at frank. Got it well enough by that time. Though fourth year yet again i had a lot of leeway and education from the president of the jet team. Initially a fella named david a sunny word. now listen were balloon. He was in show. He was in a lot of businesses but he had gentleman lou. Bosserman had music corporation. America had all these movie stars in everything and and the government said you to break up at conglomerate. Whatever will miss the word that ended up coming back to jersey from jersey Brilliant man and they found out that harry wismer and the titans were sale for one million dollars so Along with four other guys put up two hundred grand piece it. But the jets franchise missed literally said stars sale tickets. I'm gonna help you joe. You're gonna help us this together. He would get me on the tonight show he would. He knew dry cars that he no fretted according to the network leaders. Yeah wasn't all ago thinking you see sunny word in how he handled meet. Those first three years attaining around manhattan to different restaurants you know if top spots introduced me to people considine you know these guys and he had one with that than i did. I could play. And i wanna play. But i was naive. I was ignorant. What really he was doing with knowing that he's helping me. And i didn't realize it so much at the time but i really learned to love the man and his wife and mr mrs wherever they were the reason that i i grew in new york and winning. Of course got you know. It helps everything right. Yes absolutely so. Mr warburton help you go from beaver falls joe to broadway. Joe is what you're saying. Well vowed it yes He again you think you can't you want and he'll let me make things big. He got me opportunities. And i got an education judo's opportunities didn't do all of the things as well as i would have liked to have done but i did learn from so you know we keep trying to approve. Yeah yeah no exactly. And so he was a big was he a big part of the merger the afl nfl merger. Because i know that's like there was a lot of like when you were going through that you're afl and then he goes to the nfl and the nfl teams. Were given you guys a lot. Of flack about oil. They're not real pros ernie grunfeld and you guys come out and smack them. You know what happened When we had five owners with the jazz. Mr leon has a wonderful man. He's not with us anymore. Son johnny is in his family. But doesn't own the jets at this timing. Johnny need head had the sale sale Anyway mr has had a disagreement and They got envelope and put in. They're paid for the other guy. Share mr heads. Outbid missed the word lennon missed. The word wasn't an owner when we went into that ford season in one a we were still together as friends to miss their heads would come to the hospital. Not just what. I was in there but when every player we had was in there he would go into the hospital. Visit with them The hospital was on park avenue. And that's where the has led. I wanna thank you so much for sharing. Take it some time and sharing your story I have a good friend. He's a little older than me. He grew up in long island. And i i said okay. I got a call rick. His name's rick giusto. Rick was a lacrosse player. Didn't really played football. He was an all american lacrosse player. Virginia and i said rick what do you remember about joe nemeth right because i wanted to get somebody's i wanted to hear from somebody that kind of watched you knew what you know what he said i thing he said. He said he didn't mention football or anything he said. Joe nemeth broke barriers for me as a kid. And i was like really he goes. Yeah i said what do you mean he goes well. He just did things that nobody else was doing you. As far as the media goes as far as just being out there and doing different things and he said he was such an idol to us. Not only on the football field but everything you were doing off. And he said. I remember joe used to come to our camps and in long island you were just he all. He said the same thing. You're just so gracious. Such a great guy to be around. And i said well. Thanks rick that means a lot. And i can't wait to tell joe that story so really had some complimentary things and it wasn't you know i thought he was going to say okay about both three or whatever but he talked about you in everything else besides football. Well please get rid by best man. And i tell you i went. When i visited maryland guston on a football visit. They let me watch maryland. play either virginia. Wake forest in lacrosse. Yeah it was the first time. I had ever heard of the sport or resolve resolves for and i thought wow look at these guys. I became such a fan man. I'd be watching the long island teams on television new york. Those kids were great it lacrosse. Yeah that thing about a guy with that. The debt sticking his hand. They're able to wax of buddy away. Jimmy brown used to play. Well jimmy brown's like you changed the rules about everything lacrosse. You know what. I mean like he you know he would just run. They just put that stick on his chest and run through beaten. I always said if we would have had lacrosse growing up it would have been such a fun sport to play. It was everything that we liked. It was baseball. football basketball. Is movement passing vision hitting no. It was all of it. Yeah i was never real keen on the hitting partner getting here say So when people ask me what my favorite sport was. I tell baseball. I liked basketball. Not my so. I love football. But football's a tough a tough physically mentally well. I'm like you. we all have knee issues. We have other injuries. Football takes its toll on your body all the time and up when those rests weren't blowing whistles fastest when you you know definite now doubt better today than ever. The athletes bigger stronger faster. That's great we've learned from yesteryear just like baked coaches now of nick sabin. You know he's learned from the coaches ahead of the paul brown or whatever you work with ballot check to cleveland. You know these. They go back in history and they've learned the good. Lord did a wonderful job with the animal. We are no physically mentally. But these bodies aren't designed to play that sports ye- i heard a story about like you had like such an innovative knee surgery while you were playing but you weren't quite under right and you had to show where your knee was hurting or something where you're bone. Spur was during the surgery. Well actually coming out of it gone. I didn't have a problem with the doctor. Nicholas knew where my problem was by moving it around until you go inside and doctor nicholas mentioned this to the time until you go inside and not absolutely sure what you're with and we did the surgery. When i woke up after surgery gaza i had a cast on from ankle to my thi- and standing next to bed were was my three brothers. My three older bribes and doctor nicholas was down at the end of it. And i say you know. I'm glad to see my brother's benepe. Still a little bit foggy. Right doctor necklaced started out exercise. How we had to start working on quadricep muscle right get the legs throng again. Yes and yes any takes my leg and he picks it up by the he'll he has my right knee in the air. A right leg and he has the joe. We're going to start now. A we're going to start now. He's i'm gonna move my hand away from your. He'll and i want you to hold that leg up there guys My three older brothers standing there you know i had to really try. I really try out like that was bursting blowing our away. Man is struggling to have shaken little while they're in of not anymore but if my three brothers hadn't been i wouldn't last that long. That's that's funny and you've played with. I mean you played your career with a lot of injuries. And i think in super bowl three. You played with a broken thumb. Is that right well. it wasn't broker. We never did x-rays well we didn't know what was wrong. Right hurt like hell. That's all i do things. You just didn't know it. I had pulled back. Foulon rosh will. We did not extend of it. I couldn't quite the early on a couple of weeks before. I couldn't quite put the kind of pressure with the hand with thumb. Maybe it would distract me. And then the game one time end up bumping a helmet had come off the field for player veto. Winning their bama man veto loved him. He was a great teacher they rally. Yea so i. I think that we've all been through that and all the struggles that we went through growing up and you see our families like you talk about it starts at home in toughness that there's so many times when i would get hit and i'd be laying there and it would just hurt and i just think about my dad be like i'll i hear in my head was get your ass up off the ground right. That was what. I heard like an all sorted home like we were talking about. How many what was that like. I mean i know you've played through a lot in your career a lot of injuries and all that what was that. Did you have that voice in your head. That was telling you that. Start with the good lord. Yeah give me a chance to get very to go at a. I was very religious since I i knew i had to try. I knew i had to try. I didn't like the alternative right. I wouldn't accept not doing it so to speak you know. Some people have injuries. They don't have a choice. You can't go on. But i had with the the knees in the hands of shoulder. Three torn ligaments of picking up a middle linebacker on six came from six blitz up the middle man just came clean so just laxed boy. I get the ground at right shoulder. That was three ligaments but.

"Those coaches. Like i looked up. We've eubanks and i started like a thinking in my head. He looks just like my high school coach. And like all these memories came flying back of high school. And and what harry did for us. Harry's a hall of fame coach and the pennsylvania you know he coached many kids and you know we didn't have a lot of athletes. I mean i played football with nineteen kids. Mit beaver falls. But we didn't have like crazy amount of athletes but man. Everybody gave one hundred percent. Well we were lucky. We had a little league team be reformed to go out and play chip. Law ellwood city. You're someplace around there but we were fortunate with the adults. They love football man. You know being twenty eight miles from pittsburgh steelers you were big fans of the steelers and the rooney's of course everyone the family. Yeah you know that was the thing too about growing up says that we didn't have a lot of channels but everybody on sundays. In the fall we go. Play our football games in winter All of us everybody from the whole town would come. We play football but you had to be home by one to watch always was always the thing. I tell people that all the time everybody would come to play football. And then we'd just to be home by one o'clock yet it'd be to go to church. Eight after church gold chains football back. In my mind's eye man sitting there with my dad seeing body lane the detroit lions play in chicago. And i would call passer. Ron like i knew what i was doing just so but we watched religiously every week i. It was great might so my dad was one of fifteen kids right joe and and every christmas it was like one day you go to one brother sisters house the next day it would be the next so you didn't have people just coming in your house all the time so i remember when we go to their house i sit in front of the tv and watch the game right. I wouldn't even care like well. My one go ahead a lot of train. So i'd go look at all the trains. He added his basement but then it was always watch football. You know and for me. It was like dan files. All these guys it was it was just football's always been in my blood. It was great neighbour falls high school. Geneva college pittsburgh steelers when it was football season we then it was wonderful so i was pretty you know when i started reading. I saw that you were thinking about maryland as well like they recruited pretty heavily. Yes i really like maryland. They had coached there named tom nugent. Who come in with the offense. He put the i formation lee while he was at florida state and he was just a full of energy. I really liked him It was close enough to home on three hundred miles away that you could get back. And there were some western pennsylvania guys. They're all marty schottenheimer. God bless he left us too soon but he had to get. It adds ragga neat. Marty moratinos down in aliquippa matt. So i really like maryland. But i didn't measure up intelligence wise. Your college board scores. I messed up on the college board. Scores wasn't sharp enough and coach Believe called coach bryan it alabama and told him that i was still out there. Alabama had sent to coaches to be During our season coach. dude hennessy. In charlie bradshaw coached went on to beat the head. Coach you kentucky for a while to to coaches came. They came to talk to me and it was in the afternoon before basketball. Gay and i couldn't understand him. They really had this other bro. Y'all know at First of all basketball season. I wanna signing basketball right and so that's what transpired then then getting recruited by other schools in travelling around I ended up signing with five different Universities you could do that at the time As long as they weren't at the same conference right so i. I wanted to play baseball. I really wanted to play baseball. And you're who is your idol in baseball roberto clemente man and man mutual. I saw one night snap in the box and right for still run but then at the bottom of the inning down long it came up and they'll get is a straight game home run. Oh my gosh right after that. Yeah my uncle. Joe used to take me up to the pirate games You got to go to forbes field. Oh yes yes. Yes i did. Grow kid mazza. Rossio was such meeting room. Yeah and playing off football player tournaments in. Oh yeah that would have been. That would have been a treat. I actually interned with the pirates. After my senior year in college back in three rivers when it was three rivers and i loved it like i got to know everyone my dad used to fall asleep with a transistor radio on our glider on our porch. Listen the games. All i could see myself sitting right there beside radio right there beside the radio. Yeah exactly milwaukee. And i think who is our face at a perfect game gone were like twelve innings tendencies and the game ended up. I don't remember howard ended up Sydney just leaning against that radio as close as you could needed to upset. My mother was messing around worth. Not were the gabi playing. He'd fall asleep on a glider because he just worked at double or something. You know i'd cover them up and go to bed and he'd sleep out there all night. I was just this kind of how we grew up. You know. And i just think like i was just researching you know and thinking about where you grew up where i grew up how similar it was. Obviously a never won the championships. You did but I think it's just amazing like kids from this area. All kind of were similar back in the day like our dads ramiro geisen and like if you were a kid that had any promise you know. They didn't try to push you towards the mill. Like my dad like most people went to ppg or alger. And i'm sure in your town. A lot of people were meant to go to the steel mill. But if you had some promise the whole town kind of got around you is that. Did you feel like that happen. To beaver falls a little bit with you because you were such an incredible athlete absolutely an either falls. You know the people whether in support city whether it's wherever other places man. They're prouder players their time. They want to win. Yeah they were for us all the time and the when we even messed up off the field sometimes police force. Say you know you. You've got to behave yourself. You've got a game coming up. Friday night when i was more afraid to go home to my dad then the police tall. Yeah you just pray and your mom didn't say anything to your dad. Oh please yes because that was a good him work in the coming home and take care you too but You know it's just those stories that pushed us through. And then you get alabama. I went to tulsa and oklahoma. So i'm thinking god you have far away from home. I went far away from home. Where your town. Your people couldn't come see you and the media wasn't the same you know. Our games weren't televised. Like probably your games like alabama played on national. Tv a lot but that.

"The competition for sure. Well i think it's it. Sounds like you were a lot like me. 'cause i grew up Half mile from our football field in high school. When i was a kid. I remember. we'd sneak under the fence so we didn't have to pay for the ticket which was like seventy five cents or something right. Read sneak under the fence ago. The friday night games in just the energy and the people that were there there was nothing. Like 'cause the whole town kane. Yeah you have the fast. We had offense that we kind over instead of under geneva college you know we played it feel that the geneva had up there and gone through friday night games man. I wedged guys playing joe walk. I don't know if you remember why he was a great halfback. It'd be befalls. And i watched him man. When i was a kid growing up and he joe went on of course. The pro ball became coat. But i just marveled at these guys. Aching played foot on friday nights watching them to halftime guys will go behind the bleachers and play free for all we did too. Yeah yeah yeah that was no pad but the guy that got the snow or whatever it was everybody ran half of the tackle. Oh yeah. I mean i just i always tell people that growing up like we did in having a community like we did and where you played every sport i learned to play basketball because i got coached in it just because we did. There was no rest. Nobody like you call it your own fouls and you kinda you still friends. After the game it was great. I mean i miss those days a lot. I knew i couldn't play basketball. And goes guys from feral and share came down falls manning as cats play washington to washington all our basketball teams. We went to successful is really. We wanted to be. But i loved basketball. They would probably youtube. Where man when you when you could done outwards one of the highlights of my sporting life was in college between my junior and senior year. I got the two handed married young. It was what i did basketball. It was great back in the day. The music be playing the cheerleaders and all the kids from school would be in there. And he's we had a great little gyms and you'd run down to the music and doing the lineup drills remember all that was just so much fun i remember and then you've got all your buddies had nicknames the unicom by the real day they all had nicknames. Yeah and i i remember. I wasn't a real boy scout but went joined the boy scouts because the meetings were in a gym under church. You know in a church basement. We can play basketball right after meetings and stuff. But i wasn't a real good scout. And somehow i didn't make the grade man but we played indoors in the winter. Time a little bit. Yeah you didn't get a lot of patches. You're saying when you were in the boy scouts and shot a lot. A lot of free throws probably and the other thing. Joe is that we had Coaches right you had. Your coach was coach bruno right and we had in football. My coach was my wife's dad. And that's how i met. My wife was to him but He was divorced wife and she lived with her mom so i really didn't know her but he was. He coached football for forty two years. We ran the wing tea in high school. And i never went through harder practice in my life than i did in high school. It was just like and you. I mean think that's part of being tough to what what are coaches put us through and then they were mentors and i know you're coach introduced you into the hall of fame which tell me a little bit about that will go back lifetime you know. I started with the home in how our family tree this. I can't put enough emphasis on. What my high school coach larry. Bruno brought to the table when he came to be befalls high school in my junior year. coach bruno was terrific. Put it that way and we wanna championship senior coach. Bruno is an all american. Football player himself has but package geneva college and he ended up being selected the plan. East west shrine game geneva. That's pretty you have and that. He was a magician to get on average titian and stuff. And that's how we got the ball handling down the section in the backfield people used to take the quarterback. We've made the big faith but we had a fullback named burt curse debtor went on to princeton and played birth. He carried a hey get a pocket out. Like that and clamp down. Just no but i still had the ball in his tuck it in and he's the one that sola buffet lot of people think the quarterback fakes the running back and always ask and then i go to high school coach brutal. I get to go to meet at work. Play for coach all bear bryant at alabama and. I had never even heard a coach bryan before that. Yeah i i watched alabama play penn state in the liberty bowl late fifty nine or sixty. I think alabama loss seven. Nothing but but i liked the way they play man and Then i saw coach brand kind of leadership. I was there under and discipline. You know coach brought on coach bryan. If you want to play all you do the other things in life i and measure opt-out a wanna do it and then i get into pro ball. We've you ban who have already won a championship in the nfl. Is paul brown. Hubel i mean did the football guys. I was so lucky to have those kind coaches even had even had Coach new holds there for almost a full season. But what he did. Leave with me with He was brilliant coach. It just like code saving maybe college. Football or pro. Sports was not their company tea so to speak. Yeah and they go back to college in gado. They just wonderful. Yeah i had. I had coach saban as my coaching. When i played for the dolphins be. I mean i'm not gonna say anything. But i understand what you're saying like the pros probably word for coach saban but definitely college is a little different. The story for him obviously has been super successful. Your alma mater.

And i'm like. I wanna beat these guys bad and i swung tore my rotator. And oh man. Yeah but you know. I don't know it hasn't hurt my golf game. So i'm okay. I'm right on the edge of giving that sport up playing the worst. I've ever played in my life and i haven't played actually for about six months. Now so what's worse like thrown an interception or having a bad round of golf intersection with the pain. And you know we usually talk on a show about how we grew up. I mean i came from a big catholic. My dad was one of fifteen kids right. There's nothing more catholic than that He was a guy to he worked at. Ppg And talk to me a little bit about how grown up in beaver like the friendships. You started and then ruin. You really started to fall in love with sports. wow is early as i can. Remember volleying in love with sports ivy. Larry like three buddies at one across the street. This way one across the street now and between the forest. That's always plays them kind of ball whether we're getting on with so up para socks in old pair of socks It with a broom stick in the backyard and just love sports. I remember going up to the high school games. When i was a kid on a friday night with the hangman from the lawyer added a i think i learned early on in watching that Not only fun but whenever you want. We were happy. We were competing different parts of town the projects which were just little north of beaver falls. Though we'd go play them at the game team. You know i learned this. The air's gusts We don't do much on our own. You know we're gathering. Sports is a great teacher. And you learned. It's not all about you on time. You know you get humble. Many times you get not bound a lot of times Hopefully with the right education oaks pushy. Get back up and keep gone so. I love western pennsylvania. Man you know all about it. Oh my gosh you know. People always ask me like what makes quarterbacks from pa. so tough. And i said you know for me. It was my dad. My dad was distant toughest guy i've ever met. He was the youngest boy. He was the third youngest kid he said you know. He was in the korean war. Because i never had a new pair of shoes until i got to the army. You know and and so. I've seen that guy do crazy. Things like take a chainsaw across his hand and and just keep working. And i'm like dad. You gotta go the merge room. He's like we'll do it after. I get done with the job and i'm like and so when i tell people what makes us tough. You know our our parents and the people around us were tough. That's kind kinda help pittsburgh. Is you know you just My brain here again. It starts at home life if we're lucky enough to have folks around us our environment our family law and it can guide us in the right way We're very fortunate. I had a family of that nature to i had friends. It didn't quite have that kind of family. When we were growing up through life i understand are grown to know and believe that it starts at home most of the time and boy. Our families Louder support yet. You know it was amazing. that what they did give us and so. I'm sure you've played all three sports. You know we didn't grow up in pittsburgh. We have soccer and lacrosse and all that we had football baseball and basketball. That's all i ever played. That's all i can remember. You know. Guess i tried ocoee. I tried get not is to on that cox a couple of five bars and all man. I can't do this. Pittsburgh didn't have a professional hockey team back. Then we grow football basketball and baseball. Three seasons man and Athlete i love making the transition into all of them and there's not one of them that i disliked. You know i. I loved all of them and Football by the way people Over the years would ask me about. My favorite sport did always didn't go to football. I tell him. I don't like getting hit riding. How 'Broadway Joe' redefined the NFL
"Com. Hey history lovers. I'm Mike Rosen world with retro pod a show about the past rediscovered fifty years ago a few days before his team took the field as huge underdogs in the super bowl. New York jets quarterback Joe Nemeth known and then and forever as Broadway. Joe arrived at a Miami Hotel in a Turquoise Cadillac Nemeth known to sometimes show Eh Games. Still drunk from the previous evening's activities. was there to accept an award. The quarterback sat on the dais next to his companion for the evening. Mr Johnnie Walker wrote Mark Kriegel in his two thousand five biography when it was his turn to speak Namus said I'd like to personally thank all the single girls in New York for their contribution. This was pure Broadway Joe tipsy free willing amorous and so was the cockiness that emerged from his whiskey. Soft lips later the jets will win in Sunday and said `I garin teeth. I the colts win by a large score. Today I'm GonNa say Baltimore Colts by a score of thirty five to ten. I think New York to win forty one thirty one. Nemo's prediction wasn't just hockey. It was really New York over forty one called the his opponent. The the Baltimore Colts were seventeen point favorites nameless knees were beat up. The colts have the second most potent offense in football in the best defense. Some were predicting a blowout. They said that it couldn't be done. But it has been near. The Third Super Bowl could gets one sixteen to seven was named most valuable player. Performance wasn't all that stellar. He didn't even throw a touchdown. But in critical wrote the moment itself took Namus fame and pro football's popularity to different planet in fame's pecking checking order. Nemeth suddenly outrank Sinatra. The biographer wrote. Actually at that moment he outranked just about everybody who wasn't a beetle doc attendance around the NFL Sword Soda TV or ship particularly with the launch of Monday night football the following season. The League made sure that Nemeth in the jets played in that inaugural game he's going NBA. Joe Name. After George Sauer for the touchdown everyone wanted a piece of Nemeth especially reporters profiles of Nemeth for the nineteen seventies equivalent of Click Bait legendary columnist. Jimmy Breslin wrote a famous story about Nemeth For New York magazine entitled Nemeth All night long in it. He compared the quarterback hanging out at a bar to Babe Ruth hanging out at a bar. I saw ruth once when he came off the golf course and walked into the bar at the Old Bailey side course in queens president wrote in one shot. He swallowed the mixing Xing Glass Ice Chunks. And everything else. He slapped the mixing glass down instead. Give me another one of these things kid. The place went went nuts. It is the same thing when you stand at the bar with Joe Namath. Life went on like this for awhile not surprisingly Nemeth endured his fair share of busted relationships drunk driving charges bad business. The steals fading playing ability in then of course fading fame drinking was the biggest problem. Nemeth was an alcoholic alcoholic. He settled down in Nineteen eighty-four marrying Deborah. mays woman he met at a voice class with her insistence. Nemeth was able to quit drinking a few years later but after they divorced in two thousand Nemeth began heavily drinking again leading to one of the ugliest and most embarrassing moments of his life during a jets game in two thousand three Nemeth wearing his old number and obviously heavily intoxicated intoxicated was interviewed on the sideline by ESPN reporter. Suzy Kolber he answered one of her questions in a truly shocking way. What does it mean to you at now? Team is struggling kiss. I couldn't care less about the teams throttling Nemeth apologized and entered Rehab. Namus is seventy five years old. It's easier for him to look back now on that improbable win and understand and just how much it changed his life and sports forever. I think about it now. He recently told the New York Daily News. But at the time time I
