Will Joe Biden be the Food Tech President?

"We're here for another editorial podcast. We're gonna go around the horn. We have with this gin marston jen. Hello chris albrecht are you. I'm good how you doing mike. I'm doing well. I feel like today's this week is a little more relaxing than last week. Which i know about you guys kept hitting refresh. My browser to get news. Don't have to do that this week. just a little bit of a relief on that regard but the the food tech news is actually pretty hyper active this week and i feel like there's been like three or four stories around mcdonald's in the new plant beefburger alone chris the mkx plant. Can you tell what's going on with that dude. I have no idea. It's kinda crazy. So they announced yesterday they had some investor virtual investor day. today were recording on tuesdays. This was monday suddenly like. Oh we've got this thing called plant. So this is a notable for a few reasons. One of which being mcdonald's has sort of sat out here in the us anyway on the plant based burger craze so whereas burger king introduced impossible whopper last year and white castle has it's impossible sliders and even burger king had an upper. Kfc had dipped its toes in with some pilots on plant based chicken. You hadn't heard anything from mcdonald's than they had run some tests with something. They called the plt eighties. Kid makes me think of pyti but the plt up in canada which they did in conjunction with beyond. Now here's where it gets interesting. Because in the announcement yesterday they said. Hey we're making this plant Which on its own makes you want to say macpoilin for those people who watch the it's always sunny in philadelphia the The so this mc plant burger is coming next year But they didn't say who what they said. Actually they said developed Culinary team made by mcdonald's for mcdonalds so hearing that was like okay. they're making their own. They tried beyond didn't do what they wanted to do. So they're making their own and then a lot of people reported this right so beyond stock took a tank took a dive yesterday. Because they're like. Oh you're not be doing it for mcdonald's and then mcdonald's came around and said oh actually you know actually rephrase this so mcdonald's center around a clarification and let me just because this gets crazy so their pr person sent me calms team. Sent me an email saying in the same way. Mcdonalds has not run its own farms. We are not manufacturing plant based meat for the client platform notice. It's a plant for platform about a food We will rely on our suppliers the third leg and mcdonald's three legged stool blah blah blah blah blah. Right then it says mc beyond meat was our testing partner for the plt plant based burger in canada and we have not announced which suppliers we will work with on mcclymont so clear as mud like cagey cage. Yeah well and then beyond came out yesterday and said hey actually. We co created the plant and You know they were but that was on their own call. Mcdonald's didn't say anything about it right so The but beyond said beyond meat and mcdonald's co created the plant based patty which will be available as part of mc plant platform. But they don't say going forward. That beyond meat is the supplier right. So this may sound muddled because it we're still trying to figure sort through the news it does sound like there may be implying it but there's no definitive i did I think you may be posted in the slack. The picture of the beyond beyond meat stock in lewis. One of those pictures were it. Went off a cliff around eight. A m and win. There's a curfew Around at all of a sudden jumped back up like it was a huge like And so i. I don't understand the kgb's mcdonald's wants everyone to think that they do everything themselves. But like we know they don't grow their own potatoes or simply naito they. We know that they work with the we know they don't own a cattle. The work with farmers wasatch secretiveness. I i don't have. They ever co branded a burger before I don't think so no so. I mean that you could say that for anybody like i don't have white castles. That are burger. King has ever done that but you know they look at impossible. Burger right with the impossible Beyond the big. Doesn't i mean burkey has impossible right rapper. And and i guess from mcdonald's perspective maybe thinking well there's not a lot of differentiation if like all of a sudden a bunch of other fast food restaurants are having beyond meat in their burgers I think maybe they just wanna claim that it's uniquely felt for them I don't know other than that. I can't really feel why. I mean i think then possible walker was developed. Fairly uniquely for them. I mean it. Has that weird kind of gross x-ray on like that a grill taste or that flame royal tastes that his uniquely burger king. Impossible has Which makes me think they've spray somewhere chemical on it but But i i get it and by the way mc plant can we just discuss the name a little bit like myself walked in. He goes dead. Mcdonald's has a new plant burger called mc plan because he goes. I started laughing. How dumb the now. This is my teenage son. So yeah it's not playing well the number that it is has it said. It's like so absurd. You can't forget it

"Let's go to my friend, sandy Naito. Hey, sandy, welcome to the show. Thank you. I I'm wondering from behavioral standpoint, what your thoughts are on older golden retriever, a single puppy litter just want everything. And I will tell you he's not neutered because he's a show dog and the dog. And unfortunately, I hope that Casey opens their minds and allows. Are you can use you? But you can you can show. An annuity dog obedience. Correct. But he's in he's been shelling confirmation, obviously Norma big fan of neutering for several reasons, not just the, the moral reasons, but it's just healthy for the dog as well, but that's a decision you have to make now in terms of humping now, we have a dog that's been around a lot of other dog. She's been shown, so I want to explain to people that humping dog doesn't mean the dog is sexually active, okay? A hunting dog. I, I always top people at the dog is humping leg. Don't feel flat. Find your leg that attractive, okay and you don't have to coach hours and play dog magazines either. What the dog is displaying by humping lot is he's displaying dominant behavior. So it's not unusual fray female dog to help other female, a female, doc, a male dog or another male another mad dog and has nothing to do with sexuality it strictly a show of dominant behavior. So what happens often when a dot com someone's leg they shake the dog off. He's just getting the dog more excited. So the bottom line is I wish the dog was noted, but he's not when the dog is becoming are coming to a situation where starting to your leg. He needs to get some basic authority, right? Than in their stop. Whatever you doing leash. And collar Cam five minutes of his basic training, Stanford laminate, if that's what you do showing him in the show ring conformation, and just basically work it out. At that point, then let them go, again, if he starts, again, to same thing has to take place, if you're consistent about it, it will stop I promise, but again, it's not sexual babe. Sexual behaving your case, because he's not neutered, but again because he's around so many male dogs, so many other female dogs. So there's a little sexuality taking place here, but the majority of it is, basically caused by dominant behavior. So again, don't shake them off. We Chicago comes out some basic training at that point, and your problem should be resolved, and your basic training. I'm sorry is doing what whatever basic commands. You know, sit stay down. Calm I whenever basic training, you've done with him. Even just stand for examination. You, are you showing him. Do you have a professional handler? He's been with a professional handler, I show him myself. But I've worked in the veterinary field most of my life, and, you know, my I is like you said, and the veterinarian that I respect the most that, you know, he's still he's at the age where it's going to change behavior, but we're not worried about behavior but listen, did you ask the vet about prostate cancer that you ask the vet about to stick your cancer what since since the newest information on that again, please I, I work at a veterinary hospital? Information coming.

Although at the Saint Louis blues in their story how they came in the NHL Stanley Cup last night's pretty mazing. Nobody picked them to win. At one point. They were a laughing stock of the NHL, and that's when a Saint Louis guy name Scott berry, who happened to be in Las Vegas for some sort of work trip decided, you know what I'm going to show some civic pride. I'm gonna put four hundred bucks down on my last place hometown team the faint Louis Blues. What were the odds two hundred and fifty to one man made this bed at the Paris hotel and casino on the Vegas. Strip put four hundred bucks on the Saint Louis blues to win it, all when they were two hundred and fifty to one. What does that mean? That means last night when the blues won game seven on the road in Boston. My man, Scott berry was the winner of one hundred thousand four hundred dollars one hundred thousand four hundred one hundred thousand four hundred dollars said one thousand no no no no six figures, here, one hundred thousand four hundred bucks as ING he had a big viewing party at his house, and I big make house party and they were recording themselves watching the game. "Ask show today. We're gonna talk about the undertaker Goldberg at Uber showdown. We're gonna talk about the Abhu sheet NATO match from the one super card. Trust me, you'll like it. And we're gonna talk about WW stomping grounds. We're going to get all this stuff. But before we get there, let me introduce sitting right next to me is the one and only Jonathan Bartlett, illustrator extraordinaire and bigger big time wrestling fan. Hey, doing man, I'm doing great. The pencils are down paint is put away. I failed out of x t school. I, I don't know I'm here, I'm ready to talk. Let's do it Hilbert. Jim is on the line. Yeah. You doing Jim? I'm great Jim right? Before we went on the air, gymnasts Friday afternoon, paper views the way with future, WWE's latest Saudi Arabia boondoggle super showdown. Part, two was this past Friday, and I will say, if you want to say, one really wonderful thing about that show. It's that it's fun to watch a pay per view at your desk at, like one PM, or two PM, or whatever it was fully agree with that. I mean I just got a second screen and my in my studio twos. I have two massive twenty seven inch screens and one is plenty to make work on when I'm when I'm painting a similar setup. And so I'm just like I mean I'll put network on sometimes anyway. But to have like the live pay per view. It feels like a treat. Oh, yeah. Now only that pay per view was maybe some. Different now. I'm just getting. I mean, it wasn't happy bad. No, it was surprisingly watchable in that I think can of is the. You know, the way these things are gonna go. Yeah. I loved it. Yeah. I think that like in general from guardians Ewing habits. It'd be interesting to see them try that out more. I know they've done some other like you know how big big time how show type things on Fridays Saturdays. And I don't know. I just feel like maybe I'm just I live in a weird cloistered world appear in, you know, the online publishing bubble where this sort of thing is easy. But, like I feel like the world has evolved, just in the past, like five years, the distance between mythic about it, like five five years ago, I was so sneaking out of the office to watch March madness games on my lunch break at, like a bar down from down from the office share. And now when March madness comes on, there's just like people just turn on TV's. Yup. And put it on your, it's on people's TV screens. And you just kinda hot from office to office, washing stuff, or somebody sets up a big triple screen, and yeah, and almost doesn't matter anymore. This idea of, it's a symptom of the, the. The, the consumption culture at a lar- at large. Right. That why wouldn wrestling fit into that now funnily enough. It's only because of time zone differences that this occurred, there was no plan. No, of course. But I don't know there's something to that, whether it's, it's worth really picking apart or non but yeah, I always liked to. I mean, I like going to live like raw tapings, or whatever, in LA when I was there because they would they would be at five o'clock. You know, you just sort of kick off work early and journey down, and then when whenever the show I mean, pay per view, when, when the paper views over the sun still out. Yeah, it's, it's a nice time different time for Jim what time without have been one. Like what time was super showdown? It started at eleven a oh, that's just great perfect early football game since fantastic. All right. So anyway, I guess we should talk about the show as it actually happened. I wanna talk about a bunch of stuff. I'm like all over the place this week. Weeks. Yeah. There's nothing like sued driving WB consumption. I think the aid of you thing is like expanded. My, my horizon made me like Hungary to watch like lots of different stuff. Oh, yeah. We just had the what the anniversary of the end of verse of Misawa's death. I guess, and I and I ended up, I'm guessing that's why we both like Massawa this week. And so, I was watching much his stuff today, just like wow. They old Noah stuff. I mean there's just great. I don't know. Just follow Dr death. Steve Williams around YouTube. I guess is my advice to everybody. But let's we're, we're gonna talk about the Koto Bucci Naito match that just a minute. It's again I know for all you people who are complaining. They don't talk WWF. I have a reason to talk about it, and you're gonna be interested to hear it, but I, I saw goodbye WBZ showdown. I mean, I guess we can spend spend all this forward into run smack down and stamp. Grounds as Jim wants to call it as we go, if, if it matters, who sows beat the revival in a match that didn't really matter because the revival, then fought those and the WB or the raw tag team champions writer in Hawkins on Monday night, raw the revival lost as showed out within one on Monday night to become the new champions, being friend of Shane McMahon of. That's right. Had has benefits. Right. I guess also trying being wooed in real time by WB management has its benefits too. So anyway, the revival. I wonder they can make a wonder if if, if fans will turn on them if it is perceived that they're getting pushed because the BBC's trying to resign them. Isn't that sort of why we hate Brock listener has too much leverage? Like we want Ryan want talent. We want the athletes have leveraged. Yeah. No. Yeah. Definitely should WBZ's is like is basically booking in a certain situation because they are because not, not for purely creative reasons. Well, so we'll that's interesting. Yeah, that's true. But, you know with the way that their writing does the content right now, the fact that they, they, they want, I guess, in Linda since linked up with Shane there's, there's no guarantees that next week, there's ever even a mention of that again. You know. And so then did it did that part matter to do that stick with the fans peop-? Yeah people, you know what I mean. So there's a whole lot of that about super showdown. I'm not sure any of it mattered. And that's what we go right into Seth Ron's versus Barron Corbin, which didn't matter because Seth Ron's one but somehow immediately. Parlayed into a rematch at WWE stamping stomping grounds. You've gotten. Having of all of the matches I didn't expect to see Renson repeated for the next pay per view. This had to be like, number one on the list sh you know, I was thinking about this a lot this morning. I think Corbin is necessary. Maybe case make I don't know. Okay. Okay. So this really gets all wrapped into to Shane and heels and baby faces Belykh. He is aside from Shane, who, that's got whole other like hodgepodge of confusion with it, who is the bigger he'll in the company who do the fans hate more. And so if you're really going to, you know, continue to have them cheer for their champion Seth who else do you? I mean other than just hat letting him have great matches against great people for the sake of doing that. It's believable that Corbin is the antagonised that continues to push the buttons of the fans. And honestly, if you what he can go, I think his wrestling is underrated because of his damn vest. But I it kind of feels like he is sort of like a I'm not a stand him. But, like a pseudo stand in for when Brock and Paul Heyman aren't out there talking you know, he he's a very he's a lot. Of his value to the company, it seems like is functional. Right. He can talk he can work xactly. He's not gonna set the world on fire. In some ways, there's, there's some advantage of that. But, but honestly, I mean, I think the more interesting question is about to kind of the nature of villainy in the modern wrestling world, and I've written about it and talked about it a lot. But it's an ongoing of Lucien right now what we're seeing basically is that the top heels in the entire company are Brock listener. Who's in his own category? Yep. Shane mcmahon. And baron Corbin. Yeah. When I was thinking, you know, I was. Hadn't no written down here like can aside from those three it's like, how do you even become a he'll in twenty nineteen unless you are just inherently a loathesome person character by nature because like this with the exposure with social media with, like every you can. You know too much about people. It's almost like when you know you can't see pass Tom Cruise in his movies. You see Tom Cruise, it's like, how do you buy into someone being a jerk, or, or an evil villain onscreen when, like then you can turn around open, your Instagram account and see them on vacation with their three kids in their wife? Yeah, it's just an interesting like and so, so hopefully that actually ends up leading to shades of gray. What like we used to get or we were getting, I don't know, like ninety. The acting actor comparison is interesting because I think in some ways, it's easier for the roles that are more clearly roles right. Like I'm not. I never I wouldn't I'm not mad to see that like it is he'll heyday I was not mad to see like Rousseff wasn't actually burning American flags and his free time. And like punching American kids, because he hates the country so much trade, that's fine because we know that it's, it's a gimmick writing, and I. A gimmick probably would have never had a ceiling on it. Right. That wasn't going to be the gim. He wouldn't have had that same precisely saying the same gimmick if he made it a top of the car. Right. Right. But it's different when you're sort of like a top heel. And you kind of have to be actually hateful in this, right? I mean you have to people people throw around experts and go away heat in everything else when it comes to. Well, I mean, Shane and in barren or the two people that are here here at about hear about it the most, but it's not I kinda think you have to I wrote, I remember writing this about gender Mahal when he got when he was briefly the champion, it's like you have to seem. Hey, not just hateful. You there has to be a perception that you don't deserve what you have if you're going to get over as he'll do you think that's a historically? How it's always felt I'm trying to think just on their certainly long legacy of chicken shit heels in, like heels have to cheat to win and that sort of thing. I mean RIC flair was that for the longest time there. I mean he was he was not the first in that mold. I mean, gorgeous George was never perceived as like I mean, I never was not Jenner was not always perceived as a top fight, grappler, he used his use various underhanded means or whatever else or just, you know, look to get through matches and you can go. I mean just kind of follow the whole trail through there. I mean up to the present day, but I think by and large there were, there were plenty of. Mention Dr Desi Williams in passing earlier. I mean there there, there have been many. Legitimate heels throughout the years in different. Territories in everywhere else is always been a little bit a little bit weird about about.

"Observer dot com. I don't wanna waste a lot of time on this, but the line that Dave had last night. What's the update on a Bucci? Well, we're not sure, but he's alert and responsive. Like that's is update alert. Okay when you're in the ER at, like you may or may not make it okay. You're alert and responsive. All right. Like this is not a promising sounding update right here like going to be okay. I guess I don't know but alert and responsive able condition like if I see a guy that lands in his head and I go, what's the update and they go well. He's alert and responsive. It's like is it gives you a little walk? Is he gonna live? That's a bad sounding update. Okay. Now, listen yesterday, I rant and rave forever. Concerned that Naito or boo. She would just like die in the middle of the ring, and I feel that if they continue doing these matches and doing these spots like one or the other is going to die in the middle of the ring. Okay. So yesterday's show was all about my concern for those two particular individuals. But there is a bigger issue here. Like if you're one of those fans that just, you know, I want to be entertained like the guys choose to do it. That's on them if they die. Well, you know what do you want me to do about it? Okay. If you're one of those fans that's like your mindset. Okay. First off. I think you're out of your mind but second off, let's talk about how this affects everybody else in wrestling. It's not just these two guys. What did I have to hear yesterday? Oh my God. I, I hate Jericho in the main event, it wasn't a normal Okada match. The crowd was okay. Let's talk about this crowd Jericho in Okada, followed a will Osprey dragon Lee match. Where did it every high spot imaginable in that match and blew the roof off the place? And that was followed by two guys that they got the credit of the match by landing on their heads multiple times. I mean, yeah we talk about the, the apron spot, which may or may not have been botch. Whatever whatever their idea was. I mean it was horrifying what happened. But do they land on their heads another half dozen dozen times in that match the story of Naito an Bucci is it's two guides trying to break the other's neck? That's the story of this feud every time they do a match. They work over each other's necks, and they drop each other on their heads and necks and, and more often than not, they actually land on their head neck, not every time like some of this stuff is, is safe, but not all of it. Okay. So you're talking about a match that a follow two guys who raise the bar to that level. And you can't figure out why maybe the crowd wasn't super into Jericho Cada. What could they apostle? Done to get the crowd into their match. The level of the previous two guys who did nothing but legitimately on their heads and practically break their necks. You've, you've raised the bar to a degree where now, like in order to have a quote great match at legendary epic match. You gotta practically kill yourself. Like, that's what happened in all Japan in the nineties, and Dave said yesterday, talking about the anniversary of one of the great one of the great tag, midst of all time. Yeah, one of those guys is dead in internal decapitation like I'd have to go through the list of everybody else in the match, but it didn't end it didn't end in a pretty manner. So, and then yet everybody else having to land on their heads and do crazy things because of the bar that those guys set. It's not good for them. It's not good for the industry, and no, I'm not an old man sitting here telling you this. I mean, people were telling you, this, when they were much younger than the nineties, I was telling you this, in my twenties about stupid stuff that people were doing in the attitude era and the body count from the attitude era. Don't even get me started. On watching retro raw nitro evidence go through a list of all the guys that are dead on that show on the other show and all of those shows from the nineties, it's not good. Stupid. What you said. And argue with a whole lot of other than to say it's not true, which said about them, having to raise the bar for five star matches because Kazuko Cada is the walking example in her Oshii ton Ohashi to a different degree will throw him out for the moment. But Okada the greatest example of you could say Kenny omega, blah, blah, blah. You know, he's the reason it got six whatever Kazuko Cada to me is the best Russell in the world and has been took that torture away from Tallahassee. Omega is guessing some people's conversations. He's not in mine. And I look at Okada and I asked myself, how many unnecessary resources Okada ever taken? He is. He's the best in the world. So you raise the bar to the point where the best guy in the world can do a six star seven star match or whatever without killing himself. But that's like the guy. Well, other no more than he can do that. I mean, look, look, there a lot of other guys that can have five star matches without doing what coda Bucci and night do including Koto. Bucci in NATO, which is what makes this so extra disappointing, in what is putting this more now in which should be putting this more now on new Japan in their management because these guys are, obviously are not going to stop themselves when they don't have to do this. Guess what their matches aren't getting eight nine ten twelve stars? Just not getting that with their tap. What's happening is that's working in the opposite direction, and it's turning some people off, including us because it is so completely ridiculous. And because they are looking at what they're doing in their form in their rivalry to be the best in the exact same way that those guys in all Japan were doing it, where you're having angles where these guys Nexen heads are falling just ridiculously unnatural positions, because people go. Ooh. And they're going. Ooh. Because these guys are really getting hurt and it's completely ridiculous. It's person says it's safe to say a w new Japan of a working relationships and say, he ws, allowing Jon Moxley to being the absolutely not, there's no working relationship. It's farther apart than ever Jon Moxley signed a deal with new Japan. And then he signed a deal with all eat wrestling, and the contract, he has allows him to do Japan Jericho's contract allows him to do Japan, Kenya mega contract allows him to do Japan, but they're not working together at all. Go the phones you're on the air. What's going on? This is Jack Montano. Do you think that Roman reigns is like the worst book tough guy? I a face of the company in though does e history. No, I don't think that they actually have done a good job booking him as a top guy. But the fans did not accept him as a top guy until he contracted leukemia. But they, they did everything that you should do with the top guy with him. But the fans didn't accept him as a top guy. That's very different from trying to think of who a poorly book top guy we'll see bought back on at the end. I mean they're crying. I mean think about like CNN punk like seeing punk was the champion and he never headline shows, and he never headline wrestlemainia. Mean you could argue that see and punk was a worse book, top guy than Roman reigns was Reagan zeros, title, rain. I mean that doesn't even count. He wasn't like the top guy but he he was he had the secondary title. But I mean you know, a guy who has the main title but other guys are still headlining shows. Above him. I mean that guy is worse book than Roman reigns. Has been. Well, I mean would seem punk ever like the face of the company. It's like John was still. No, he was never faced guy. But no, he was a fake be like, you know, in the group photo with Orton and mysterious and some other guys. But he wasn't that face. I mean for crying out loud Roman reigns was the face of the company when he have the title. So no, he is not the worst booked, top guide, there's ever been. Okay, thanks for answering my question. Yep. Thanks for the call. All right. Let's go to the phones you are on the air. What's going on? Yeah. What's up? All right. So I was out the impact in Richmond tapings on queen's. Yup. And. Have you heard about the guy that's been a tie Dockery? I have known her. Oh, no. Though the fan. All right. So you gotta you gotta find on Twitter. I'll probably send it to you. This guy was arguing with, with her, and just he started he started he was, you know, he was talking all that to her, and eventually came face the face. And, you know, he kept going at it won't the buck, like a dog, and she just slapped a beer and, and he just he lost his spit at her, and he got kicked out and I wasn't there, but I was at queens. And I think that was the same guy because that guy kept flipping the bird at her. So I'm thinking I actually sent a message. I told you I think that's the same guy. So I think that guy had the same guy from Portland. No from from what, what was it on a night? You can't miss thousands of twenty three hundred arena is the okay. Yeah. And I was that the impact taping on Friday on Thursday and Friday in that happened on Friday night. I think that's the same guy. Yeah. So it's crazy. So well anyway, so but, but don't shows with I think those the best shows I ever have went better than any WW show. Because the pace it was excellent the pace was so good. And that's why I want to ask you, do you think raw Bethnal should be taped? Thanks for taking the call. Well, I wanna thank you very much for the call. I mean everyone should know my theory by now. I mean it's impossible because of the length of raw and smackdown. But to me, rush would be taped four straight weeks in a row and smackdown. She'd be taped four straight weeks in a row. So Vince can't come in the following Monday and change everything like he's going do for he's going to be stuck with four straight weeks of story lines because he's tape four show. It'll never happen. It could never happen. But we we've seen this year. Still in two thousand nineteen it does not matter. If the show is live or tape is gonna do the same number. We've seen that this year. The spoilers don't mean anything to the audience watching raw right now, and if they were forced to take four straight weeks and television, it would be significantly better show because it would be four weeks of consistency. And then, of course, you know, you take the next four weeks and everything's out the window. But at least you get four weeks consistency as opposed to now where you barely get consistency throughout the show from beginning to end. So we got a fantasy book ways to like rain Vinson, and protect them from self by doing it this way, just completely ridiculous. Righty. Oh my God. So I deal with this one during the break. All right. We're back.

Why are people so anti-Russia?

"What is it about Russia that continues to wind everyone up so much? What do you think why will the Anga the alarms? Rick the ruthless draw twice light a great power with a vassal of nuclear weapons will for five years. Now, certainly since the outbreak of the Ukraine standoff, February twenty four hop ventilating pundits and politicians on left. Dan, wrought have been warning the bear is on the prow. And that led me Putin is destroying democracy all across the globe as a result, and many of you have heard me say this all too often on this show and elsewhere the Russia fobs have spread exaggerations about the Putin fresh which fuelled hatred and sewed misunderstanding. My next guest today agrees. There is he argues nothing peculiar pathological. In Russia's behavior. It is simply protecting legitimate security interests in the Baltics its near abroad and the Middle East, and it's objectives. Limited. Steven Cohen is professor emeritus in Russian studies from in while you in Princeton, and he's the author of the wall with Russia from Putin and Ukraine to Trump and Russia gate. That's just out stave. Welcome back to between the lines. Thank you. Tom grand to be with you. Now, you'll critics all too often denounce you as a Russian apologised in a Putin. Stooge? What are they continued to impugn you'll motives when you have decades of what many people argue is rigorous intellectual experience in this field. Well, it's become about me in the last five years as you say all this slurring of me, but it's a more general problem. Generally, speaking, anybody who has a public platform in the United States today, and they're not very many of us and very few public platforms available anymore who tried to take? Let's call it a balanced or objective. More storks view of Russia, particularly American Russian relations are being slurred. How do we explain this? Well, Russia has always been talk sake in America. I did a calculation the other day, and I was surprised myself to discover that one hundred years of American Russian relations there have been seventy five years Cold War out of the hundred. So that's a subject where thinking about maybe not today, but this is not unusual. But I think what makes it so severe today is it has to do with Putin the Russian leader since two thousand and in a word, I put it like this. There was. The expectation among American political media -letes when the Soviet Union ended Russia would become a subordinate partner of the United States in world affairs, and it looked for a decade or less in the nineteen ninety s like that might be the case because then Russian President Yeltsin was weak needy and President Clinton took advantage of him in a kind of soft way that made it sound like a friendship, but the resentment was building in Russia. The resentment produced Putin could have been much worse. And I think it's the reaction to Putin primarily the sense that the American media political elites were wrong when they thought that after the end of the Soviet Union, the United States alone would determine world affairs when Russia reemerged on the world stage. It was a shock. A bitter disappointment and much of that continues to influence American thanking today about Russia. And about people's touches me who say this is not a bad thing when need to deal with it. And there are a lot of good possibilities. But we're not taking those possible. Well, of course, you like many realists such as George Kennan, the intellectual architect of the containment doctrine and not hang forty seven in the non hundred nineties you both among others oppose Naito expansion. But remember Steve at the time. Many Republicans end Democrats believed strongly that the expansion of the Atlantic alliance. Eastwood's was a benign move. Well, tom. I mean, if I find out where you live, and I come over to your house with my home as my buddies. They're all carrying. I doubt that calms. Go to say, Steve, why are you? So benign. It's preposterous.

Italy’s Crackdown on Migrants Meets a Grassroots Resistance

"There's a very hot issue, of course, which is preoccupying a of people here in Italy as it does in other parts of Europe. And that's the issue with Mike Gration immigration asylum seekers refugees beat irregular migrants polls consistently show here initially that sixty to eighty percent of Italians put this is one of the top priorities. And yet you seem to be going gates public opinion by advocating a more open policy towards refugees and migrants justify that. In fact, I don't advocate for a more open policy. I just advocate for the respect of human rights. I think this is the basis where we have to agree what the league wanted me to be perceived. It's like the one of the open door policy. This is it costs them fake news. The put into debate. I always say that we have to get access. To the territory to those who are in need of protection because this is written our constitution, and our lows, I also say that those who don't have the permit to stay in order to enter so the migrants economic migrants they should be expelled. But respecting the rights because they are human beings. But I mean, you know, Mary aboard gaze of the league in two thousand thirteen set of you. Because of course, I should say that you were chief spokesperson for the United Nations High commission for refugees, fourteen years until twenty twelve so very steeped in this issue of refugees. And he said, you are a perfect example of the global lazy bleeding hearts that dispense advice left right and center without having a clue what's actually going on with immigration and asylum seat. I have no clue if I have no clue working fourteen fifteen years for the UNHCR. I don't see how there. To speak at this. Is this a Maria Borges? Here's your he's very well known. No. I think I know what I'm talking about. I'm talking about the respect of our constitution, and the respect of our lows basing, I touch with public opinion. But you know, it doesn't take a little out of touch with public opinion. And people say we don't want any more. And even now Naito Salvini, interior minister has said of these forty seven migrants all heading towards Sicily. They're not going to be allowed to descend. Yes. In italy. Because we have been was he sings it the dumping ground for all these regular migrants coming into your motto Salvini is everyday speaking about migrants is obsessed by migrants is not doing is. But. Fallen voters, and they voted him in we comment. He believe more and more popular, we entirely an electric of good strategy. But if you minister of interior you have to do something else. He's not doing his job as a minister of interior is not tackling. Mafia penetrating detailing economy is not focusing on. Exploited workers is not focusing on violence in the stadium is not working in so many issues with. Traded arteries with flex voters concerns, and he says in answer to your point about human rights. And so on he says, I am willing to host women and children who are escaping from war. But all the others. No. I mean, that's fair enough, isn't it? My phone's irregular migrants coming to Italy in Europe, economic reasons, they're very different from refugees. He's saying I won't turn away refugees fleeing persecution. That's all okay. Is very good in inventing inventing in emergency. Every time there is a boat with rescued people at sea, which has to land everytime is so good in creating an international crisis. But is it normal that eaten at continent of five hundred million people, you know, you have to spend two weeks in negotiating with the prime ministers ministers European institution in order to allow forty nine people to disembark, isn't this ridiculous? So we're losing the sense of reality. This is not a way to manage to give answers to migration. This is just the way to make propaganda, but you are failing to get your message for aren't you to the electric because public sympathy lies with the arguments espoused by Salvini, and for example, when you say Italy with his aging population needs migrant labor, we need Mike. Labor here to care for the elderly and Sony. Several tens of thousands every year we need to absorb that. People are not buying that argument. You know, they got the are. There are reasons why we are in the situation because I think people fear fear the future people fear those who come from far away. And so then he was very good to exploit that fear. You know, he's a raising fear every single day, despite the fact that the arrivals decrease of eighty percent every day is a putting aside anxiety. Invasion invasion during the election campaign. He promised to send out from me. That's it's warding to a spell six hundred thousand irregular migrants is said in front of me in a TV debate in few weeks. I will send six hundred thousand migrants. So none of them were expelled because it's very difficult. You ask divert the attention. The landing, but your immigrant population has doubled from two point five billion million to five million in the last ten years. So now immigrants former by eight point five percent of Italian population. Scipio people look around them and see. But nevertheless, the point I put to you is why you're losing the argument when you say look talion economy needs migrant labor, Peter not listening to you. Why not why not because what I try to say. It's I- reasons I give I tried to put this into the contest. So you need to think about it. While Salvini is just a, you know, making his Logan, very simplistic. Why are you gonna make a slogan? A simple slogan is your cousin when things go bad. You need is Cape Cod and Cape Cod. Savini is migrant. We are in a time when you know. We are in the period of the hate in politics. And the policy of hates the politics of aids. The politics of aid knits, escape got and escape. Good are migrants or European institutions. The fact is it's not only migration that you'll lose any argument center-left politicians such as you be the social Democrats in the Czech Republic. The social Democrats in Germany in the Netherlands, the socialists in France only losing ground to the anti-establishment parties populist parties, whatever you want to call them. And they are the ones who are really on the March. Why are you using the battle with the electric? Yeah. I think they are responsibilities here which can't be ignored inequality. Inequality is raising in various countries in Europe. And it was really under estimated impact of inequality into this aside. So. So I think that there was not a proper management of the globalization and the consequences of a globalization. So the markets were left alone to do whatever they thought it was fair, but they don't have to. They care of the social equality, this politician work. So I think the left wing forces really lost a lot of time before understanding that was need to react against the inequality, which you people are you? Yes and ineffective ineffective. So also Stanley directive. Your measures are saying when we were with the find two thousand and eight and the price is right in two thousand five hundred quite financial crisis. Okay. So the governments of the EU and institutions the European institution decided ECU this cure district. Ended up to kill the passion because thirty measures where they Terry. Because they blaming the traditional left because traditional left in in different countries. Griselda didn't protect them. You buy this as at public is spending when you cut public spending when you cap pensions when unemployment goes up do enough populists the anti established anti how this reform capitalism to make it more responsive to anybody's needs. They're taking your clothes. I'll tell you what. Dr Daniel potasium political. Scientist says there's a crisis of the left in Italy at the current coalition government has introduced the basic citizen's income for some of the poorest in Italian society an initiative, which will cost some ten billion euros introduced a basic payment of seven hundred eighty euros a month. That's the kind of thing that you would traditionally be doing, and we we had already kind of allowance of four people. But of course, more money was needed to cover the older needy people. So. We the previous government. I was not in government. I was the speaker. But the previous government the previous governments in the last legislature China to cope with this. But it was a too little and too late. So now, we have the European parliamentary elections in may. Yes. And more than seven hundred seats in the European parliament and the president the populist party's anti-subversion parties have about twenty percent of the seats looking at the polls that rejected to do a lot better. Now have twenty five percent or so they make it of the scene. So what do you think will happen now in this kind of debate that we're having abound inequality? Yes. Who's going to be mental Beira? Well, this elections are going to be crucial for the future of Europe. Because it's the first time where you have anti-european forces, which are quite popular in embarrassed countries. So I think. We can as a progressive forces be. Consider this election business as usual. We have to organize ourselves because I see these populist nationalist that they've tried to organize themselves at international level Salvini is very active. Auburn too often. Yes with others. So I think what at least as far as Italy is concerned. I made a proposal. We can we have to join forces all the left wing parties have to join forces. But. Oaken izing a new project so giving giving those who are disappointed those who were didn't coincidence have represented anymore. Yeah. A lot of segment of society is which abundant. Left wing parties. Okay. We have to put day issues at the center of our European agenda issues and keep them representation. So we have to do you think this will happen? The next I this realistic should happen. If we want to survive if we want to put a bit of hope because otherwise if we go each party for itself, we already know we have lost. We know that there is no hope so hope for the centre-left era eve, the centre-left doesn't understand the importance of this election. And if doesn't understand the importance it has to make a new project with new faces fresh faces fresh broad new issues and put at the centre tackle inequality. This is the core of the issue. We have to understand that. If we don't act to reduce the quality. There is no future for the left wing

No body covers the Indiana statehouse better than our very own Eric's Berman, Eric so today, I understand that they're discussing for broad. I'm gonna need a little bit of background on this here. Okay. So you might remember this started coming out in twenty sixteen. And there was further discussion the last year there was a fertility doctor in Indianapolis who had been doing artificial insemination for close to forty years, and it came out in two thousand sixteen to the way he had been doing that will not using sperm donors as he had told his patients. But in fact, he was using his own. Ooh. Good. And and also Hickey so, you know, twenty sixteen they started discovering at are still discovering, incidentally up to this month discovering, all these people they're over fifty so far who discover their half siblings. They are all they all had him as their biological father. They had no idea these are adults. Now, they have no idea until the last couple of years it developed this is where the story resumed last year, Jerry curry looked at this very teddy prosecutor's office and said, I can't prosecute this. There is this is awful. We hate this. But this doesn't fit any of the existing statutes the doctor Donald Klein didn't pleading guilty to obstruction of Justice for lying to investigators from the licensing board. But there was nothing. They could do about the act itself. And so that's where the legislature comes in with a Bill that would do that. And they vote on that today. They ended up on that today. It is out of committee. He is awaiting a hearing waiting a vote on amendments under Senate floor that did not end up getting call today. So it's back on the calendar for Thursday. And we'll see if they move out of that. What else is being discussed today? Correct me if I'm wrong when I believe there was some sort of sexual predators and punitive damages Bill. Correct. Also got pulled off the calendar and should be back on Thursday. What that is. You know, takes your picture Harvey Weinstein, essentially, this is a Bill that says if you are charged with criminal sexual misconduct, not not purely a civil case. But if you have been at you've committed something that rises to the level of the crime this lists the cap on punitive damages if if someone sues that sexual predator, the reason it didn't come to a vote today is because the Bill as written says if you are charged criminally couple of senators raised objections, which they'd overlooked in committee. But they said, hey, wait, a second people get charges stuff all the time that ended up getting acquitted this at least say convicted there was agreement with the with the bill's author vanita Becker from Evansville. Hey, wait, a second year, we probably should change that. So to do that they've got to back up a step in the process. So they'll do that. They'll look at that again on Thursday. Thursday. "He's getting the the big old push. He's he's been rocket strapped to speak in the parts of another podcast that doesn't but. Yeah, it's it's I don't know. I thought it was really interesting. I would love to have a lovely chat with Gedo. And be like what's that all about? I don't know. I'm not the biggest Jay white found. So I'm being I'm being petty. But I see the potential. Yeah. They did a good job with the during this match putting over the story about why he you know, about why Gaito and Jay were aligned how what this meant for Okada and yelling match, and I I don't know if necessarily I'm feeling Jay white. This is my first experience actually watching matches. So I think he's a interesting experiment for some reason. I wrote down sexy. Billy Kidman and leather as a description of him. Man, never going to unseat it. Exactly what his character is. But the same time, you know. I mean, he's he's he's an interest. You know, it's to be interesting to see him on the on the come up. Yeah. They did a good job of of telling a story as to why Okada might be at his full speed. But while still making Jay look strong announces did a lot of legwork on this won't even though it was a great match. I enjoyed what I was really excited. See rain Mako caught a back 'cause much as I've loved crazy 'cause they love the no pants. People need parents. I I enjoyed it. I enjoyed the match. I'm just like, I don't wanna watch Jay white take the place of full my vessel. But that's on me. And I will work through it. Like, you say, I still have China how she on Okada Naito to enjoy so this'll wrestle friends who may no longer be new Japan. Kenya? Mega drops the GP heavyweight title to Hiroshi Tallahassee. We touched briefly. How do you feel? This would rank if if this is indeed his last match part of me feels like maybe he will resign probably not. But it just feels like when when all the reports are definitively say well that was his last match. I always automatically trained as a fan to go. No way. Was this a good swansong for him in that promotion, if this was his last match, which I'm also not super convinced it is, but we'll see because I feel like every time after a wrestle kingdom. They're always like can use leaving soon. Kenny's leaving soon. Guineas leaving soon if this was. His last match. I think it was. I think it was a great match. I think it was a perfectly good way for him to leave. But I mean at any point until he decides to stop wrestling when Kenny leaves anywhere, you're always going to feel like he had more to give Kenny our expectations for him are very very high. Yeah. Because he is so amazing. I guess is what I'm saying. Yeah. It was hard for me to enjoy it as much as last is not because it wasn't a good match and not because ton Ashi is an incredible because it was amazing to see him. And again, I come and tasted such a good job of of putting this much together and selling it to the story of it. But because I was so invested in the Kenya. Who caught a storyline for like a year for more than a year that had they gave you so much more. Because this is what I Japan does better than anyone else. They tell these long long long term stories, and I invested in that so long whereas I've been invested in this for such a short time in compa-. Harrison. I mean compared to WWE storyline. It was like, you know, fucking were pace. But I just didn't feel as involved, and I was so surprised to see Kenny lose his belt so quickly. But yeah, that's still so many stories to tell I I am. It's a first time in a very long time. Like was he go to go? Just tell me. 'cause he still has story here. He could have Sirri it a W could have sorry in w e by all accounts, they've made him very generous offer. We'll see the only problem go into all elite fit him for me is like what's he gonna do?.

"Out today? I certainly think it's the best thing if you can do it. I have two other rescued cats and. Known each other for a couple of years now, but your book how to get your to do. Title is how do you do what you want? And I don't know if I'm missing something. But so they they were both. They both lived on the streets for a bit of time. And the one cat lived on the streets for a number of years, and he's really great with people, but he will walk up to my other cat and and start wining and then get closer and closer because she lets them because she just lays there saying Hello who are you? And but then he just his whining gets louder. And then he just watch her. And then he will actually, you know, take her down and and try to bite her. So I'm not quite you know, he's fixed. He wasn't fixed until he is there any bloodshed. Is there any bloodshed on not that I have not that? I've seen a lot of a lot of for the house a lot of her and my other I'm protective of. My other cat because she has cancer. And so I just I'm, you know, more protective Naito Mont anything. I don't want him to draw blood. So I'm just not sure if I'm missing something. But you know, it's very first of all let's take it from two points of view, and people can understand this number one is the the attack that's being the aggressively cactus being the aggressor expect a lot of time out on the streets. More time a cat spend out on the streets. The more time they have this incredible instinct to survive, and that means being really possessive means being really territorial a never ever ever their social streetwise never ever kind of turning your back. So even though they've been together for a while. It's very possible that every once in a while he just kind of goes to that cat, and it triggers something off in his head is if maybe this cat wants to take over that could be part of it. The other part of it could also be sometimes a cat will detect the helmets of another cat. And that would cause they're not in your case. They've been together too long. What I would be doing at this point is I would just be making sure. That you keep the assertive cat as.

"You'll have to listen to me. This is the most important day on up you from the minute. I walked Naito you what I want always ignore. I I was having so much anxiety watching that because her mother like I thought her makeup looks great. And obviously when you're getting makeup put on it's a process it takes layers. There are things that you have to do in her mother was just nagging nagging nagging about like the way she looked and wants to make up on there's not much you can do. So like all that nagging was really I mean MJ didn't seem to face. She was kind of just like, whatever. This is my mom used to this the whole time. I was like oh my God. Is she feeling okay? Like I wanted to go in and help 'em to resume kept trying to step in a little bit. And be like everything's fine. You know, and like I wanted to be that person for 'em J in that moment. I know it is amazing though, the effect vita has on people because I think if it had been someone else may. Maybe the makeup artist would have snapped back with something. But she just looked close to tears, and like you said Raza was trying to figure out like, even the I think the lady who was trying to make sure everything happened on a time schedule. She was trying to figure out how to properly, you know, rain, Vida, it mess with the mother of the bride. I mean that is like the one position where you're like. Yeah. How do you confront that person? You know, crazy. Okay. I don't know if we actually saw how much vodka did m j end up with it didn't seem like a lot. It didn't seem like allies at the only vodka. She had. But that's the question. They're more shots. You wanna Shaw? Yes. 'cause did that help with the relaxation. Right. Because I think you do need a couple of drinks. But typically, it's more like champagne. Light. But I mean, she went straight for the vodka. I mean, I don't I can't blame her. I mean, if maybe that's why I was feeling all anxiety because I wasn't drinking vodka watching this always the issue. That's how she got through it. What did you think about her walk down the aisle? I know I this is why this is my one is so important because all these people has been to a wedding before. I know I love home. This is not a concert. You must come down the aisle. Go to groom waiting last hour and a half. What you decide to make your way out? I know I know I can hug and kiss afterwards. Reception. I mean, here's the thing. Like, I've been a lot of weddings at this point. And a lot of them are structured the same way. It's walking down the aisle. It's the procession. It's the music. It's the calm. It's the piece, but I really liked that. She just did not care at all. And was taking her time saying, hey to people being like, don't look good. And like, they're all like Iago. You know, I really think injecting your personality into leading even in the ceremony part of it is awesome. I think it's important to do that like I feel like weddings should have more personality, and like usually that shows in the reception and those sort of things, but like why not make your ceremony more interesting. I mean, she was already an hour late brain which granted I think you're allowed to be late your own wedding. That's understandable, an hours pushing it a little bit, you know. But I mean, why not why not make it your own?.

"And so the boxer we grew up in jersey. And so Russell Stover was bigger on the east coast. And I'd like sees was probably bigger on the west coast. And so. My dad would get those boxes or Russell Stover candies with all the next ones and everything and they go out on a Saturday night. My step mom and my dad and right on the box. My dad, even in Penn would right? Don't touch do Naito with the explanation that didn't stop grantee angry, and she's still going to lift it up slowly make sure that that little white piece of paper in between make sure that's back onto and son of a gun. Sometimes I take too many. I'd leave an empty rapper in their gosh. Darn it in the man. I mean, one time I got busted man and the old man he gives me this punishment. I thought for sure this is awesome. I thought for sure this is the greatest punishment ever my dad's like all right jackass. You wanna eat all the chocolate. You you can't you can't listen to an owner here. Here's the box eat the rest of the box. I'm just thinking to myself God, this is the greatest man, I should have this punishment of fishy. No water. Nothing just added. And it's probably like forty. Pieces, and I'm like eight or nine, and you know, there's always those three or four crappy. Well, have a good boy. Boy, do they even make. Yeah. There's always like that that one percent in the world that actually could actually handle that one. And sure enough that would be in the middle of why you're trying, but I mean, you get three or four caramel based ones back to back and all of a sudden your mouth is exactly you're just you got. No, no water. You get no saliva. You're pretty much done. And my dad loved him because he knew he knew it's going to take it all these like great. He's like, I know he'll bounce off walls, except he's going to be second. Sure. Enough after about I'd say about a good seventeen pieces. Yeah. That was that was it spelled doom. You know that was good. So the the rug actually survived the. Extracurricular activity. Washed in hot water in the machine and survived until. Sixteen and a half years old and went to a Kager with my buddies. And so it was four towns went to our high school west Essex club in north jersey. And so two towns is was actually it was Fairfield North Caldwell Essex fells in Roseanne Essex fells with a little preppy town real small town. But everyone that lived there. Don creaky the goes, I mean, all the very ritzy, you're not add money Bank big time. So it was Roseanne and Essex fells versus Fairfield in North Caldwell or or one of the a I think that's might have been Fairford Roseanne against north quad one.

"Go i don't know what sam talking about anymore he just keeps obsessing over new japan is if we watch it every week who has got the time so i think there's even more people that watch russell kingdom for that but because of that the stories that get told within the night and within the matches and the reaction that the crowd has to these wrestlers is even more important meaning that guy's watching or people watching naito verses okada at russell kingdom on new japan world here in the states at least a lotta people are probably sitting there figuring out like they're figuring out who their favorite guy is as they are watching a lot of people do and it was clear if you kind of watched the match even in the video package that was happening before the match you couldn't understand the language where you could understand through the visuals what was going on and you can hear the audience and you've it even watch the presentation anybody that's watched new japan at all before probably had a similar feeling to me which was you know oh cod is great but we've seen it before like okada is doing what okade has been doing whereas like this is naito's moment right this is this is naito's spot to be the guy this is his this is the the night that he gets crown especially since they put this match on after jericho omega and when he wasn't crowned when okada won the match it was a bit of a letdown and that's not usually what happens at a russell kingdom russell kingdom usually gets it right i mean in a it looks different like a russell kingdom show verses any other new japan show like i came on your we new demanded the live shows on access the uh the beginning of the united states titled tournament and it with its it took place in california i talked about that and talked about how the production value just wasn't quite there there was there was missing elements the crowd size doubted i.
