"And I don't know what the people behind the scenes. I mean, we saw mister Yale wood on sidelines hollering and screaming at tuberville during the game. Oh, sure. But you know, it's interesting. Somebody said this today, auburn's biggest rivals aren't Georgia and Alabama, auburn. That's exactly right. And it's sad because I love all of them. I've always been a fan that just I just decided to be involved with Friends, but this kind of stuff. But every time auburn goes outside the family, so to speak and brings in an athletic director, it doesn't work. I saw this in the 90s when they tried to bring in somebody. I can't remember where the guy was from. He was Colorado or Washington. It doesn't even matter. They do much better when they have their own and why do they want their own so they can be controlled? It's that simple. That's exactly right. I mean, when you've got a guy like yellowwood, on the sidelines, in the coaching box, hollering screaming at the head coach while he's sitting there watching the game calling the game. That speaks for itself. And auburn has done this to every coach from Carrie bowden own. They've gotten into their personal lives their personal lives have been thrown all over the Internet, not in the public. And I'm just kind of sick of that kind of the one thing about the program. And I don't know that I don't know fact from fiction. There's no way I could right now. But. I have rarely seen somebody just manufacture that, okay? Oh, yeah. There's been some help. Yeah, there's missing mail. There's something. If you just make up something out of whole cloth and say, okay, I'm an I grab pictures of you. I know and you're like going sometimes the most innocent people sound the guiltiest when they're accused of something, because they're in shock, how could you say that about me? There's no way Jimbo's ever done any of this stuff, has he? No, no, absolutely not. Why more number one? Thank you very much. Good to have you on. Trey is in Tuscaloosa, a hell of a trade. We're doing well. Thank you. Okay. Hey, Paul. You know, this auburn and Brian harsh and stuff. It has directly affected two people. And it has helped one in my opinion, and it has hurt the other. This is definitely help Pete Golding. He has no longer the talk of the show. I blame him for well, what he's doing in northport, Alabama when he got arrested. I don't know. If you've ever been to northport, I don't know what he was doing in North Korea. Well, but is it possible that he lives in northport? He could possibly live in north Paul. I don't know. I've been in a couple of those bars up there in my younger years and I've been in a bar with two table bars and people and everything else. But you know who you know who has hurt the most sliced bread. Sliced bread. Sliced bread, by the way, is texting me nonstop. Where are you going to mention my name again? Well, I'm telling you Pauly. And what about what about bro Bible? Yeah, him too. I think you need to get both of them as gassed on Paul. See if you can't hunt them down. I.

"Thank you and welcome. Hey, Paul. Thanks for taking my call. I'm an Alvin graduate 1981. I've got pictures of past elementary Henley. I've even got a picture of you down in my bank. And my father. He sent me a picture about three years ago. I've got it. Wonderful. In a prominent place in my bank, you talk about the players behind the scene the boosters. I would imagine mister yellowwood is one of them. I would imagine mister apple is one of them. Can you enlighten the average panel? I would say this Barry and I don't think Tim Cook is someone who involves himself in this type of meddling. And I say that knowing him moderately well and having seen him recently. I can believe that. But I would say, yellowwood would be sitting at the head of the table. And that makes perfect sense now. This is the first coup attempt without pat die. So this is a little bit different. Well, I would imagine I would imagine the banker man in Montgomery is no longer a player. You know who I'm talking about? Yeah, no. I think you're talking about Bobby louder. I think Bobby ladder probably is more of a player than he wants anybody to think. But I think yellow wood is really where the action is. He was. Yeah. And there's been a question. I know at one time this son, this has been many years ago as some of like a walk on and he was like down on the sidelines and stuff and they kind of had to say both. You don't need to be doing mister Arthur blank down here on the sidelines when your son is just a walk on. So I kind of figured the other wood is probably the one behind most of it. Yeah. But beyond that, I mean, I don't know. I don't think there really many names to matter because that one you mentioned. Pretty much takes all the oxygen out of the room. Well, I hate it. I hate it for the man. And the elephant aroma is the accusation is going on. And I'm not going to say what it is. It was discussed earlier. If it's not true and this is what's being drummed up by these people is totally unfair to this man and his family. But if it is true, then you pay the price, but if it's not very right, we don't know. And I mean, there's not a reporter that has been on this program tonight. And that's three of them who don't know what that elephant in the room is. And they all know more than I do. I don't know anything. I mean, I sit behind a desk here in punch book. And I was on vacation in Mexico with my wife. I know there would be a miserable trip. Yeah, no, I was thinking about that a minute ago. I hope coach Harrison is getting a lot of relaxation wherever he is. And I hope if his is true, he's got police protection because if it was my wife, he would probably need it. But hopefully those rumors aren't true for his family. And it wouldn't be my wife. She wouldn't have gotten on the plane with me if it were true. I understand. But it's a statement that's not true. And I feel sorry for this young lady as well. If it's not true that all this is being drugged up just for money behind the scenes, we want to get our guy. That's not right. Well, Barry, thank you. And I do hope when harsh and returns and in the interview last night with Chris Lowe, he addressed things on the periphery. He talked about the assassination of his character is total BS. Now, what was he talking about there? I'm a big believer, and I've asked questions of coaches before and they never talk to me again. In this realm, it's a very difficult thing to do, but I think when there is this much conversation about something, you're better off either addressing it head on or letting the chips fall where they may. I'm Ann is up next. Paul I agree with that totally. You dress it head on and deal with it. If it's true, you deal with it. If it's lies the depths that people will go, who knows? Let's talk about the players. The players say there's a lack of communication and understanding on his part to put it kindly. But it seems to me these kids are going to school on scholarships and you might want to believe it's their responsibility to have part of that conversation too. And it didn't always go their way. And if he's a hard ass, he's a hard ass. Now let's just and the players leaving in the portal and that kind of thing. Actually, the portal was designed a long, long, long time ago, but there just was no Internet and all these people run in their face. And that was when Bear Bryant was running them out like crazy, then it junction. And if you're not tough enough to play for the man, then go somewhere else and find somebody who will cuddle up to you. But it's football. And what do you think about that? What do you think about the conversation? Both ways. No, these kids have some responsibility to step up to the place. I will tell you, man, back in my reporting days, which is a long time ago, I could find a player to pop off on a coach and I did. I was I mentioned one case earlier. You didn't need to be a great reporter to know who the malcontents are and to go right to them. And just like I think you have to measure the credibility of that, just like, I don't pay much attention to players who go on social media and defend their coach. If they're on the roster and they're intend to stay, their course are going to do that. That stuff does not really matter. Unless there's a specific allegation which I didn't see or hear today well, I think I heard slay boss say it and you've said it before and we can not talk about it. Auburn H their own worse than any other school in this country..

"He said, I know you're looking at Tennessee. Tennessee came down to Tuscaloosa two years ago, closely beat him. They brought and I might have these numbers wrong because they didn't have any scholarship limits in 1963, but he said they bought 55 players down to Tuscaloosa and play 40 of them. He said, last this year, we went up to Knoxville. I took 70 ball players because I wanted to experience a 100,000 people. And he said, I played all but four of them. He said, now you can go to Tennessee and sit on the bench Sean. Or you can come to Alabama and play. And he turns his head and he burps in my face because he didn't want to burp and calibrate his face. He wasn't drinking. He stands well he just got through with dinner. But I guess he stands up and he starts to walk away and he turns around and he comes back, and he said, you will name a heavy trouble coming out of that pit anyway, boy. Now do you know whether he did that or not? I've never heard this story before. Well, I heard it from another coach back then, from Jerry claiborne. I don't think you did. No, I don't think he did it at Alabama, but I can bet he did it at Texas a and M. Anyhow, that was you could feel that guy. Wow. I agree with you Garth and I've been around them all in my brief career. And he was the most imposing one of the most imposing people I've ever seen. And I think a lot of it had to do with his size. I mean, he was just a big guy who walked in a room. I met John Wayne, not long before he died. And he reminded me they were very similar. In fact, when the Bear Bryant did a movie on bear, he ended up getting Gary Busey to play him. It was a terrible movie. But Brian wanted John Wayne originally, unfortunately, Wayne was too sick and near death. Hey, thank you for the call. That was fantastic. We are heading to a break. We have a guest coming up, and then more of your phone calls as we wrap it up here on a Friday afternoon..

"The pride passion then pageantry of college football lives here. This is the Paul Fein bomb show our four podcast. And we have reached the final hour of the week. Someone asked me the other day. What do you guys do in the off season when the games are all over? It must be pretty boring. Well, already this week, we have had Jimbo Fisher call out lane kiffin and Nick Saban. We had national signing day yesterday we had a top assistant in trouble with the law and today we have one of the 14 SEC coaches according to several experts hanging on by a thread. This is not some message board rumor. These are three of the best and the brightest marks Chris Lowe, both of ESPN and John to talk to you they will dot com. All three said they don't think Brian harsh and at auburn will survive. Brian has only been there one season. He has 6 wins. He has had 5 coordinators. He has lost more than 20 players to the portal. And who knows what else? Let's get back to the calls. And check in with neckbone who was on the phone. Hello, neckbone. Hey, Paul, I love the show, man. I've been listening to you for years since you were on the a.m. and Montgomery. Oh, thank you. It was the best color by the long shot. She was great. I remember one afternoon listening to you and I had to drive the Clinton because the a.m. died out, but you had rush pros on your show denying the extramarital affair and from what I'm seeing on the message boards there is a cute girl that was a boy as he stayed cheerleader that supposedly Carson's has been involved with and just wondering if he would come on your show and talk to you about it. And make sure I understand you correctly. You're asking me if rush probes will come on the program to talk about. And they're done that with Russia. Well, yeah. On the show. Turn out rush wasn't exactly killing the truth that day. The question let me say this Brian harsh has been on here many times. In fact, we talked to him in late December. We had two interviews with him in auburn, the week of the iron bow. I talked to him right here, and then I talked to him again the next day on SEC nation. So he is out of the country according to Chris Lowe, who was with us earlier. I hope when he comes back, he will come on this program and address his job situation. I love the show, Paul, hello. Thank you. Thank you very much. That's a good word. Thanks sir. Kind of a cigarette after that call. Wow. That was felt like I was I was in a Chinese prison there, big integrity, interrogated. Wood dog. We go from neck bone to whoop dog, only the best names on this show. Yes, sir, mister Paul. Hey, I got a question by the NI. I heard Nick, just not too long ago and you explained the way that set up with the players well. I guess my question is, when I hear Jimbo say, that's knowledge is out there and documented how much these players get. Is that true? Well, it is theoretically documented by every university, at least those who are doing it above board. So that's my next question. And I guess all the concerns and banner back and forth is that a and M kind of went below board in paid a lot more than what's published or documented? Well, again, I think Jimbo Fisher flatly denied those allegations. But yes, those were it was suggested by a few people that everything out there wasn't exactly kosher. Okay. So I guess I guess what to get to the bottom of it someone would have to go in and kind of dig and do an investigation to see if that's happening kind of like what SMU went through. It was illegal. You mean you don't believe Jimbo Fisher when he said that's not what they're doing? No, actually I'm a 70 graduate of a and E and my do believe him, but I kind of would like to know the truth as well. I'm an Aggie fan, but I will tell you this dog and call me naive. I believe him too. I don't think anybody would go out there and say what he did. Should he be were he doing something nefarious? People have done that in the past when they were misleading, but I think Jimbo is a straight shooter. I do too, and I appreciate that honesty too. All the colors are kind of just saying that they're guilty because they're rich. And I don't really go along with that. Anyone who thinks that this is some outlier story doesn't understand Jimbo Fisher and doesn't understand Texas a and M, you're more of an expert than I am what I've been there enough times to know. That is a magnificent university that's got an infrastructure built within it and around it that is that is better than almost any other school in the country, especially when it comes to the alumni base. And nothing should be surprising out there. You're right. I totally agree that is an upstanding universe to have a grandson there right now. And I really do believe that he's an honest guy that this isn't some kind of scam. They're doing some lender underhanded. So I appreciate your explanation about this and thanks for taking my call, Paul. Thank you very much. So we have gone from neckbone to what dog I just looked down and unfortunately, I just can not find anything. After neckbone and whip dog, what would be the next best name we could go to? Cat daddy squirrel. Handsome Joe. Legend. Unfortunately, the shriek ends at two. Let's go to Garth. Who is up next? Or does it end right here? Hey there. Yeah. What an honor it is to talk to you all been listening to you for years, watching you. And you were on this show like Jeter played shortstop. You made the look easy and by God, it's not. Well, thank you. But sometimes when you get a dead spot, if ever, being a journalist, I wish you would explain what this show is. If you met somebody on Mars has never seen it, this is not just on a sports talk show, but anyhow, if you would do that, you'd be in a journalist and can explain it. What the hell is this thing? Short story. That is a great question. Go ahead. What now? Could you do that? I can't do it. I can't do it off the top of my head. It would be too complex. Yeah. Yeah, I know it would be. So, but you're good with words and think about that because there's something about this show that's different. I mean, they're playing it up in a big market up there that play an excerpt from it. I don't hear you playing their exerts. But anyhow, I'm an old guy. I'm 75 years old. And in 1963, I grew up 7 miles from The White House in Virginia. And they had all metropolitan in that area, Washington, D.C., southern barrel and all of Virginia. And I happened to make that team. And they had a banquet in December. And I went to it. And in walks, Bear Bryant could be the speaker. He wasn't announced. I ran later in the book there that he was there because Robert Kennedy flew him up there to integrate the conference. But anyhow, you have to be there that mind and he came in and he spoke. I don't remember what he said. I was all on. You could feel the man when he walked in a room. And I'm sitting in the back and next to me up against the wall was a kid named Jay calipers, who was the best running back in that part of the world. And I have to be sitting right next to him on the end of the table. He was at the head of it up against the wall. After dinner, Bear Bryant walked straight to him and I'm staying there. He leaned across me so he could get up in his face. And he said calibri, if you know what's good for you, you'll come on down to Bama. And calabrese, I couldn't have said, he said, well, I understand you put boys at pits down there in Tuscaloosa and whoever comes out gets to start. And Brian said, then you said, well, these countries son will lie to you. But he said, let me tell you the truth..

How the Name 'J.John' Came to Be

"Folks welcome back. I'm talking to canon Jay John. Now, what's that all about? Before we get back into the book, canon J John, you go by J John. It's a great marketing idea, because there's no other Jean, but what, how do you come to be forget about cannon? We'll get to that in a moment. But Jay John, what is this? Well, Eric, your Greek, guilty. I'm Greek and my naming Greek is yanagi yuan is. And if you translate my greet name into English, it will be John's son of John. So when I kiss you one is you honest. So when I wrote my first wait, you're first name is yanaki. Yes. Now I've never heard that. Yeah, nagy says John and Johan is his son of John. Well, Yanni's or iwan is John. That's right. Janae is like the diminutive of John. It's like Johnny. It is. So my brother's name is John. We call him, you know, Yanni Yankee, whatever. Okay, so you decided living in England to keep things simple to be able to communicate this. You're never going to pull off this yanagi's thing. No, so I Anglo size my name and then when I wrote my first book, several decades ago, I just had this idea, oh, I'll just call it J John. But I never ever dreamt that the book would do really well. And then that person J John was being invited to go and speak. So I never intentionally decided. But so then I did. And it stuck. It's a bit like C. S. Lewis, T.S. Eliot, DL moody. Yeah. Yeah, EJ metaxas now. It's not gonna work. It's not

"nagy" Discussed on Dual Threat with Ryen Russillo

"Is it the best coke. Ever try it i. I had a question about matinee after we threes disaster and justin fields. Because i mean that was the biggest story that was really big store. It wasn't even l. a. beating tampa bay Aaron rodgers of what he did after garoppolo got his team ahead. That was an unbelievable sunday. Night game i think the chargers chiefs thing. We're gonna spend a a lot of time on that game of mitchell schwartz former chief offensive lineman so as a lot of headlines stuff but it felt like the most reaction and this is a point that i've made throughout preseason and everything is that bears fans angst about justin fields status with the team. I just got to a point where i was capped out i was like okay. I got it i got it. I don't. i'm sick of reading about this. Like every single fields. Preseason game was this just on it. But i guess. I don't know that i really respected. How bad this whole deal was in chicago with quarterbacks and we know what the history is never good but i watched a good chunk of this game because i was fighting with direct. Tv for three hours to start my day. So i had two games to choose from then head to go back and watch more of the red zone stuff. So i watched this game and i guess i can't help but i guess yeah. I laughed a little. I laughed a little. i'm sorry I laughed a little at all of the justin fields. People because just feels didn't look like he was even close to ready but by saying that that could then be turned into witty. You pro- nagy and let me just say this loud and clear. I am not pro. Nagy okay the nagy thing has worked if he didn't have a job at the end of the year. I would not argue that. He should have kept his job I wasn't even a big mitch. Trubisky guy is very clear that the staff bailed on mitch at some point. But i also think mitch had his own limitations. A quarterback those kind of limitations. That are gonna lose games when you start trying to go a little further into the season. But i i would work it out this way in my head that go. What if the whole time when everybody was mad at nagy about playing dalton and saying that feels was ready. What if he was actually tell. The truth feels wasn't ready and he didn't look ready yesterday but he also. I don't know who would have looked ready in that situation because offense locally had nothing to do with him so this is not anything. that's that's complimentary towards nagy. It's simply this. It's what if he was just kind of saying. Hey we got this guy camp. Every day he came from an ohio. State offense where the line's always going to be better than everybody. They're going up against. Hasn't deal pressure all that much. The receivers are all pros and now the first taste that he's going to get a real pressure real adversity. We ready for that so we want to give it a few weeks maybe a month or two or whatever There is also a part of two. I think people got really grossed out about it because the senate i- football broadcasts were collins worth was basically saying this is the whole game plan and it was very pro nagy and even i was turned off by that. Even though there's nothing about me that's attached emotionally to any the chicago outcomes. So and the fact that nagy was like i'm gonna like i know you all want the fields part but i'm gonna make you watch andy dalton it wasn't somebody else it's i'm gonna make you watch andy dalton before. I let you see justin fields so all of those things make a lot of sense in why people took it so personal and then you have the result we had yesterday. I don't feel it's gonna be great. I don't know if he's going to be bad. I have no idea. And i'm not gonna use yesterday's and example other than to repeat the point. What if nagy was right about not being ready Others would argue. Nagy hasn't been ready All season long because the numbers from them offensively or joke. The bears right now are averaging three point three yards per play fused of any teams who three games over the last fifteen seasons There are there are numbers. I'm going to get to a couple of other numbers a little bit later. But it led to. What i think is now a new submission although i think locally nagy was on the hit list but i think nagy's now on the national hate list and that is cerruti and i've been doing this is really cerruti idea but it was just basically. There's a hate list of nfl head coaches that have generally hated by the national media. I wouldn't say was just local. So who are the names that you're kicking around because now we obviously have to have nagging to this. Yeah it's national media. It's it's a lot of twitter. Two and nagy is probably just outside. But i have five guys. I didn't go ahead of him that instantly. Everyone roots against no matter. What kind of success. They have one cliff kingsbury to good-looking. Didn't think you deserve the job number one for me by landslide too. I have urban. Meyer meyer for a million different reasons And i'll leave that dan campbell. That guy is old school. Knuckle draggers you could possibly find. He is everything like he is the antithesis of what like you know the analytics group thinks you should find it a new that coach and i think people will say you know have have For him to fail from day one even team is actually playing pretty him. Zach taylor of thing to kingsbury although like you know. He's just oh okay. This guy was a coach. Sean mcvay for like one year now. He gets a head coaching job. I think people thought that was unfair and they root against him and the last one is a little bit different. I think it's jon. Gruden hundred billion dollar contract. He was out of the league for so long..

"So i think. Usc should go get a nfl coach. I think name image likeness is going to be a little bit of an avalanche the next decade and these nfl coaches are not control freaks. They've dealt with players getting paid. They're very comfortable with it. They've got owners in the nfl. they're not in the. I have to control everything. Business i said doug peterson to me matt. "nagy" Discussed on Mornings with Keyshawn, Jorge & LZ

"Well i'll say this You know. I think you know in jordan from some of the comments. Before i'm my family is a big basketball family. We love we love groups and we're all about it but when you have in a professional athlete honest that had the type of Season that he had and to finished the way he did but yet to have the You know intellectual ability to make a comment like that that is so powerful struck me and and i just think too many of us do exactly what he said. We live in the past. We worry about the past. Were concerned about the future. And we forget about we forget about what's going on right now and that's a problem and so that hit me in the fact that you you can't you can't control what happened in the past You need to worry about what's going on right now that that just that speaks every single person in this world and For our team. That's what we're gonna do. We're not gonna worry about two thousand eighteen nineteen twenty and we're not gonna worry about two thousand twenty two. We're going to worry about right now This year and today. And when you do that it just makes things a lot easier because then you get into all the what if what if this. What if that. And that's it's it's too there's too many hypotheticals and it's just wasted time so we're not gonna do that. We're going to focus on today's practice. We're going to have great conditioning tests this morning. We're going to have a great afternoon practice. And then we're gonna learn some some places and get better today so that we can practice good tomorrow and If we stick to our guns on that Every every day throughout the season. I think things will happen and i just think it was a powerful quote and then something that like i said my four kids can can learn by and it's pretty cool coach when you look back to some of the struggles offensively would be fair to say that the lack of a run game was something that plagued this offense in these last few seasons. And i know you have a desire to really activate that run game. I heard some interesting quotes from you recently. As recent as i think yesterday when asked about your belco running back or turning him into that belco running back and david montgomery you said you wanted to try and get him. Twenty carries a game and look at the numbers from last year. Only derrick henry had more than twenty carries a game with twenty three. Do you truly feel like that's doable. With a guy like david. Montgomery wall again for for me. I would say that the run we understand how important the run game is in every team in the nfl would love to be able to to run the ball Whenever they want to. Because it just opens up your your play. Action passes it protects the offensive lineman. So they're not setting you know. Vertical sets on on seven out of every ten plays and and then also It gives you your defense a little bit of a breather too because you have some some time possession the last couple of years. There's been some games where we had some good success of being able to run the ball and you can see when you're able to do that You're gonna win some games and there's been other other times where it's just been more of a struggle so that you know that number twenty has been brought up and and you're right i mean there's there's not many backs that get twenty carries and usually when you are a lot of the fourth quarter before minute when you're getting extra carriage that we're more concerned about the efficiency of the runs and i think the other part of this too is just the amount of trust that i. We have a coaching staff in our teammates and david montgomery and these other and the offensive line and and trying to build build. That shrank with lanka's blond coach so We understand the significance in the importance of it. And it's something that we want to definitely try to groove. I think david is certainly up for the challenge. Sure talking to matt. Nagy head coach of the bears on keyshawn jay williams zubin in the morning on espn radio and on espn news. He's joining us on the goodyear hotline coach. The offense i know has been a big focus. But let's go to the defensive side of the ball new defensive coordinator and shonda cy. Someone that's been around this team for a really long time. And i know you wanna obviously get the most out of your guys. How can he do that. Yeah i think number one. That you know sean. He's he's come up through the ranks of worked really hard at learning a lot of different defensive systems and You know vic fangio being a mentor a great mentor for him was one of the coaches that he's learned through and And then of course also with chuck pagano being here last year in previous coaches. He's been through the number one thing that i really feel from coach deci right now is just his his his knowledge and his feel of how fit certain schemes at certain times and i think you know everyone says well. He's never caught a game before as defensive coordinator. But that's that's for a lot of us coaches and The thing that i really noticed about sean is is. there's a lot of. There's a lot of trust that. He builds within his coaching staff and the players as to when he's teaching he's an excellent teacher He has a great teaching background. And i think the way he communicates to the players makes it really simple and then they're able to play fast so It's going to be a really A good test for him training camp as we go through our practices for him to be able to test when he's gonna call certain calls at certain times But we're really excited about having him be the defense coordinator and look to the future coach. I know you're very excited. Get out there and prove what you guys can do this season. Did you have that same level of excitement when you found out. The green bay figured out their quarterback situation. Ha- i'll tell you what it's been a. It's been a whirlwind of an off season across the or sure at at at at the different places with with the quarterback positions in the end again Dream bay is obviously Very successful football team. Rogers hell of a quarterback and and so we we For us we gotta make sure that we just continue to just do everything we can to to Battle every day and know that we're gonna talk division with a lotta even though obviously him come back makes it more difficult for sages. We're we're going to be looking for say just myself khalil. Mack is gonna get after this season. That's all she wants me. Yeah i would love. I would love a repeat j. about mateen in that first half at limbaugh. That's for sure. Hey coach all right. Thank you so much for the time this morning coach. You really appreciate it. Enjoy the first day of practice at training camp. Hopefully i'll catch up and.

"In is an interesting time in chicago because it has been a long time since the chicago had a very high caliber quarterback jordan. You like to always poke fun at this. How long has it been every time i listen to the bears. It's a sin lachmann conversation. Did you watch play. I didn't watch lachmann play. But i always hear about sid lachmann. I would love to turn on a bears national broadcast and not hear about sued luchman because the quarterback position has been finally figured out here in twenty twenty one so maybe this is the year that will finally figure that out because the bears did jump ahead. They swapped spots with the giants and they went and took Their quarterback of the future. I believe which is justin feels but they still have qb one. Which is andy dalton. Right now on the roster. We're going to ask the head. coach of the chicago. Bears here momentarily matinee gi. What is going on with that quarterback position. You're listening key. Shot jay will zubin. Who's presented by progressive insurance. Guests will join us on the good your hotline. My name is shake or not. He is jordan cornet. I actually am from chicago so i like to call the bears. My my team. That i cheer for you've kind of jumped on the bandwagon with me a little bit. I'm a big fan of the organization and the people in that organization treat and my wife and how they they become more transparent with things. So yeah i root for the bears. I lived in chicago for fifteen years. Matinee he's always been really good to me very fair to me look forward having a conversation with him and learn more about this team because there are a lot of questions not on a regional local level nationally people that like this league curious of exactly how these bears are gonna look. It's so funny. Because jordan and i you know we obviously watch football together and andy. Dalton obviously played for the bengals for a really long time. My husband's team and now he's playing for my team in the chicago bears. So i feel like we're very familiar with andy dalton although not in a bears uniform yet was with the dallas cowboys last year so we will see how this obviously transpires is. The bears are in training camp right now. we are happy to welcome in head coach of the chicago bears. That would be matt nagy joining us here on the good your hotline. Good morning to you coach. I'm so happy to talk to you. It has been a minute and i know That you know this but just to let everyone know obviously hosts this show with my husband here. And i've been telling them all morning long. You know coach when you say something you mean it and what you've been saying is that andy dalton is does have the edge over justin feels and will likely be the week one starter. Can you please tell my husband here why that is correct. First of all. Good morning chez jordan. Going to be on here. And you know i think for us One of the things that we've done here and then ryan pace. His general managers really create a lotta great competition and Obviously with us going ahead and moving up and drafting just in There's a lot of excitement. And but there's also that plan of the process of how we want to go about with this and you know. All of our coaching coaches on staff myself included. We've had really good. Oakham communication with andy with justin with nick on our. We're going to go about it. And i think the number one thing we've said to them is if you guys just worry about just trying to be the best quarterback that you can be and focused on today on on just doing everything. The right way. great things are gonna happen for all of us. And that's that's where they're at. The beauty is that they all understand that they agree with that. And it's a it's a really healthy room right now. In today's day one they and they had their conditioning tests this morning. And there's gonna be a great competition in all the positions but obviously the focus is going to be a quarterback and andy has played a long time in this league. He's had a lot of success He understands You know where where this city where this organization We're we're all at us coaches with justin berate now in is the starter in the back up and and they they accept that they understand it but they're competing their tails off. It'd be the best be coach. I i don't know if you had a number set for the over under and how many times we'd ask about the quarterback position but like you said it's naturally the focus. It's a quarterback driven league and their question marks at the quarterback position With your group right now. So how can justin fields win the quarterback. Well again you're right. I mean over under is is obviously pretty high territory. We we we. We all understand that Right now we just had our big team meeting last night. And i think what's exciting for our team and for our family here is just knowing that where we sit where we are that. It's very it's going to be the focus of the quarterback position and It's it's for. Justin for indie for nick Those guys that that's not a part of the process for them and trying to figure out or watch every rapper be concerned about every throughout their literally. Just trying to digest this offense and have successful place that we could win. And so i understand the you know the outside and everybody wants to know You know a lot of different questions and get questions answered but for us really. That's not our focus. We're just gonna let everything play out in regard to every position competition-wise and and andy coming in Being the starter taking over this hot oh and coming in here. They want to training camp and show on all these guys. It's like to be a leader and then for justin to be able to learn from from any Again when i say. The room is healthy every day. That we're in these meetings Andy dalton was doing everything he possibly can to help. Justin just as when. Andy was a rookie trying to get help from the guys. You've learned from the same with nick. So our focus right now is is trying to be the best offense. We can be with those quarterbacks and then of course on defense to get that thing back on track and and trying to put a team together while win talking to matt nagy right now. The head coach of the chicago bears listening. Mckay jay z. On espn radio and on espn news are a coach I know last year probably didn't go exactly as you had plan. But i heard something that you said. That was interesting. And the fact that you wanted to hang a janas into koumba quote up on all your kids doors and the essential root of that quotas when you focus on the past. That's your ego. And when i focus on the future that's my pride and i want to focus in on the moment in the present. And why is that quote so special for as you approach this next season in the.

"Sec network where they don't care here's the point with the with the cowboys and i get it. I understand why people hate it like i do. But you hate it because you love it. That's like the notre dame. Grab your life. That's how it goes. One show without mentioning goes bengals are gonna come at some point to mark my words when we can talk about that. I mean jay z van on. Espn radio and on the espn news on your espn app. And all you gotta do is tell your smart speaker play. Espn radio my name is shay cornet. He's jordan cornet and joining us in studio. Is marcus spears. Espn football analysts here. Former nfl defensive end so we're diving in all things. Nfl of course talked a lot about the giants. Let's move to lamar jackson. Lamar jackson was on the lounge podcasts. Which is ravens the ravens podcast network. And no he wasn't necessarily talking about what he wants to do on the field but perhaps what he's wearing. Here's lamar jackson. Noble already told. I said we win the super bowl. I'm going to number one lau one who really risen i number ever. My dad told me number one getting number one. Because that's the best the best and they always dealt with me now eight when i went to college and then my mom told me as theraflu beginning so it was like dang this new beginning so i kept a kelly. Macos asking me if you want one number one which is good. Because i knew stanford now know is is. I want to retire number eight. I wanna do that here at missile. I want to win the super bowl with number eight number eight committee do the same thing with one so he wants to go ahead. J just curious when your quarterbacks talking like that as a a guy here quarterback come out saying stuff like that i. I didn't take issue with it. But i don't know if you should take issue. Is that not being focused on what you need to be focused on coming into the year. They know me know he. Man bro. Like we okay. I was having this conversation yesterday. When you're lamar jackson. You do what the hell you wanna do. You say what you want to say you earn that like that. That is not a you know in particular like us as athletes. You gotta earn the right to say things and do things. Aaron rodgers just became the head coach. Gm greenback because he earned over sixteen years. He he he is the he might be the pull the owner of the team at this point but the bottom line is when you think about lamar and what what i love about his story. And what's so fascinating. Lamar has done it his way since the beginning like this new mom is his agent. You know how many people were tell you don't do that. That's not smart. Lamar dances to his own drum man and i respect that about him because as much as we talk about playing basketball on the plane. I mean playing football on the playground. And he shouldn't do that as much as we talk about. When he came out oval sitting in that damned draft room forever and people passing on him. And i'm looking at the film from college. Like what the hell are you passing known right and now we get a point where he started talking about. I want to retire to numbers. Okay that's great. That's right number. Who dad who was number one in eight. Oh that's lamar jackson. And that's some new name ray lewis. They used to play. The bottom line. Is man when you look at what he's been able to accomplish. And i'm not talking about the mvp season. I'm talking about. How his teammates respond to him right like and that's to me is a big part of the quarterback spot in the leadership role. We talk about leadership culture. We cliche it so much. everybody don't have it. Lamar when you see player. Speak about lamar. Jackson is high is high regard even got like tape take mark year And yeah marking or talking about you. Know trust and talking about him being the mvp. Those are veteran guys. They've seen a lot so he he is that type of respect and i want him to retire to numbers i review. You're really feeling you approach. You told them. But i think that speaks to. It's an athlete mentality. And i'm not trying to separate so we can talk about this stuff from the same perspective and be equally. Sharpen our analysis but there are certain things that lean towards. Yeah that's that's that's us. That's how you have to approach this thing to get to level has got to to get to a level where lamar's at currently you have to have that belief system but again there's equity involved if lamar came into the league like baker mayfield came in and talking like that. We're going to analyze that differently. But lamar wasn't talking like this when baker mayfield was talking like this upon first arrival. That's the separation. That's the differentiator. I hear you on that all right. So this opens the floor for another question here now jay and i were talking about this Marcus before you got in during a break. So these are the quarterback from the two thousand eighteen draft. Lamar was in right. And so this is a big year for all of them. And so here's the question which one of these guys is going to win a super bowl. I will be lamar. Will it be baker josh allen. Sam darnold josh rosen in there and i can't even draft class draft class allegedly lamar baker. Josh sam of those four. I would assume. We'll take sam out because we just don't even know what sam darnold is going to be right now carolina right and obviously he wasn't who we thought was going to be at the jets. So let's remove darnold so lamar baker josh allen really and and look it so my pick is cleveland the winner division but it also i have them as adarkar super bowl contender And it's so hard for me to say there. Because i love baltimore like i loved ravens. Play for them. They gave me some checks. I love people that gave me checks a segment all share. I think in but when you look at what's been built right and you look at the jump. That cleveland may but not only that the decisions that andrew berry is making their general manager like. That's where start. Y'all li like let's go. Let's go down the time line right and this is what i tell people all the time. Now obviously the players got perform denver went out and got payton right like the saints went out and got drew brees You look at you. Look at what tampa just did right. It starts with decision making and they are in a great position because decision makers in cleveland decided we don't we don't put the best football team out there instead of trying to draft the number one quarterback seventeen years in a way. Maybe we should surround him. If we when we take a guy number one maybe we should also go in surround him with other elite players all over the field cleveland. The cleveland browns. I said this a few months ago. People went christ. The cleveland browns have the best roster. Nfl one through fifty three fifty five when they owe hilty this the best roster in the nfl you look at dominant guys on the defensive side..

"Bears head coach matt. What did he do man. Nagy insisted that. Andy dalton would be the bear starting quarterback for week one his quote. And i'll read it off for you. Andy dalton has our starter. Justin is our number two. And we're going to stick with this plan. You just got us. Trust the plan. Yeah you got to set. The budget magician strikes again. I got a bunch of cards right in the right the fi. You never know where they're gonna go. Man thanks matt wasn't there was something about going around saying it's fun to throw his very him. Say there's just there's no outcome to where where there's no area where yeah scenario. Fields is the starting quarterback. And look. I i get you told andy dalton some things when you coerced him to join your your team but as the head coach of an nfl fan. Did i hit you in. The i know no good you look like you've laze bleeding if you're the head coach of this team and you're not leaving at least a scenario where justice fields as your week one starter. You're being a bad coach. Yes there should be a scenario where you allow a player to beat out another player so the best one play

"And another team and their actions. That aren't making a whole lot of sense now. Are the chicago bears and head coach matt nagy because this week matt nagy came out and obviously he's in a win or else win or lose your job type of situation in chicago but nagy came out and essentially committed to andy dalton as a starting quarterback this week which is just bonkers especially when in the nfl draft. You traded a future first round. Pick to go up and take justin fields out of ohio state number eleven overall justin field as your future. Even if matt nagy and gm ryan pace. Aren't there certainly hoping that justin fields shows enough. This year this season not just to save their jobs but to position the bears to go back to the again and maybe win a playoff game and show that there can be some promise with this quarterback in that franchise and i think the justin fields has that ability. I think that when you watch him he can make all the throws. He's won a lot of games at ohio state. He's not your typical state quarterback he committed to penn state transferred to d- committed to penn state rather went to georgia faced a lot of adversity in georgia overcame at ohio state. One big games has all the arm strength. has all the accuracy can throw on. The run is mobile. And you're gonna put him on the bench holding a clipboard behind. Andy dalton

"In waiting. And so I think man like Matt Nagy calling plays for Justin Fields. Oh, boy, that's exciting. And Andy Dalton. Again can execute and isn't going to be horribly, screw up and do just awful, awful things. He's going to be solid and make decent throws and not going to allow anybody. But again, Andy Dalton's not going to miss wide open receivers and if he has people, why do when he's going to throw them the ball? That's kind of. All you can ask is the guy that can execute me somewhat accurate, that's when Andy Dalton can do so, I am really, really excited to watch. Matt Nagy coach this year, see what it can do. And I think people are about to change their opinion about Matt Nagy and go. Oh yeah, it kind of having a good quarterback does matter just a little bit. Watch what? Matt, Nagy does with better quarterbacks this year. We'll see if he can't coach Andy Dalton or Justin Fields then fine that's fine. We can say like people can be critical of Matt. Nagy dog you know what? You're right, fair enough. But I don't think it's fair to judge. Matt Nagy on Mitchell trubisky and Nick Foles who couldn't even win the job in Jacksonville. That's what I'm trying to say. I cannot wait to see what happens with Matt, Nagy in Chicago Bears with their new starting. Quarterbacks, I guess with their new quarterbacks. One of them will start and then another will eventually start, but they got two new quarterbacks and I cannot wait to see what happens with Matt, Nagy, moving forward with. Okay, let's shift gears. I did not think I would talk about this subject at all, but.

Washington releases Alex Smith following quarterback's Comeback Player of the Year season

"Quickly. I have some news that has just come in from adam. Schefters twitter feed. And it's not a surprise but the washington football team has released alex smith. Who was this year's choice for the nfl's comeback player of the year overwhelmingly. So he has been released. They save almost fifteen million dollars cap space so in an off season. Where does shawn watson might be available. Dak prescott might be available. Russell wilson might be available louis. How interested do you think teams will be alex smith as he becomes available now. I think alex is a tremendous mentor. I think alex would be a tremendous bridge quarterback at this point in time these people are going to really try and connect the dots between him in chicago given his familiarity with matt nagy and that system that they run in chicago like it was in kansas city. I don't think that's a that's the option that they're looking for but look. I have nothing but infinite. Respect for alex smith at any team would be better served having him in their in their quarterback room for sure.

How the Tampa Bay Buccaneers upset the New Orleans Saints to advance to the N.F.C. championship game.

"Drew brees tom. Brady eighty five years worth of quarterbacks second quarter at six three saints and then dan fish huge mistake by brief. Yeah first of all the internal pressure and second of all the physical. Play at the line of scrimmage by murphy bunting getting physical with the receiver michael thomas undercutting that outraged by drew brees. That throw was a huge tone. And that. I love the to mike evans big body in the red zone. Stay in between the quarterback and defensive back touchdown tampa bay for cash in ten six tampa ensuing drive seats trying to respond. This is james winstons. First career playoff past and dan take a look at the triggering. Yeah love the beautiful design and then trey smith leaking down the middle field. But this is really about everyone paying attention to alvin kamara. Watch the tailback in. How many blocks defenders run that way. They lead tricon smith on blocked out here. You big cat. Take great play designed by matt. Nagy that sean payton carries over to yesterday saints thirteen. Ten is the advantage there. Bucks get a field goal. So we're tied up at halftime first. Possession of the second breeze to smith again beautiful. Throw we've seen so much by drew. Brees that incites thought. Fade carry into the sideline touchdown new orleans but then later in the third dan. This play changed the entire game. It's incredible winco junior yet. Tampa new orleans wins. The right they get that slant because it's man coverage but just watch that right hand come in on that back side punch to finish that playoff for tampa bay's defense. That ball bounces right to their defender to huge turnover for them saints turnovers and the bucks cashing in. That was the story of the game. Here's brady that's leonard. Four bucks tied up at twenty cook knows. That mistake was critical. Comes another one dan. Although this one clearly seems to be miscommunication yeah really. It's really just trying to get a vertically route to evan chimera out of the backfield but what happens is never liked. Does a remarkable job of playing with vision onto drew brees patient and then no wasted movement snaps drives on that football before kamera ever turns around and drew knows that was a terrible decision. Saints third turnover leads to this brady takes it himself. Tom brady giving the bucks a thirty to twenty lead. Only the rap isn't excited about it and one last chance now. Desperation time for freeze. That is tipped in the air. And that is all she

"Do you think that the right direction for the bears would be to. Maybe put all their eggs in one basket and trade for the shawn watson or completely changed their mentality at the quarterback position. Well i kept them all. I would keep mitch. Because i when you look at mitch numbers and that's what i'm trying to figure out. What are you valuate. Mitch on if you look at his numbers this year. From the standpoint of touchdowns the interceptions and completion percentage and you know he. He played winning football. I mean you know it's gonna be aaron rodgers absolutely not but if they're gonna get you the playoffs and now you gotta get into the playoffs. Now you run the football you play defense and you got a chance to go to the super bowl. That's my personal opinion. Okay but now. Here's the issue you're going to you know if you're let's say gonna make the trade for veteran quarterback because and this has to play into it. I mean george mccaskey's smart enough to know that the clock is running on that defense. They have in my opinion another year or two. And then it's going to be. Mac is going to be over the hump. You're going to have quinn. You're going to have to obey then. All of a sudden that they're they're they're an old group and their contracts are up and now you re starting from scratch right there. So you know i i i guess what i'm making the point is that you know if they want to get the most of this defense. They need to do it right now. A s a p and so. I think that's probably should've played into this decision. But now if you are. Let's throw out a veteran quarterback. If you're matt ryan and atlanta or matthew stafford detroit Are you gonna say you gonna pick the bears over the patriots because right now. No i mean and right now. The same thing with assistant coaches. I mean whoever this defensive coordinator coming in if they bring somebody in there not to give them a three year contract because it right. Now it's it's throughout the league the handwriting's on the wall. They have to win this year. Everybody's fired that's that's a tough spot. I very very tough. Spot for ryan. Pay matt nagy to be into it because there's a lot of jobs open. We're guys are starting from scratch. And they're not on the last year of their deal so i think you've gotta look at the coaching end of it. And you gotta look a veteran player. That might have two years

Bears plan to keep Nagy, GM Pace for at least 1 more season

"The Bears are keeping coach Mad Maggie and GM Ryan pace for another year. The team confirmed it this morning, Chairman George McCaskey saying Maggie and pace are growing in their roles, though he said neither received a contract extension. They also acknowledge the Bears need more production from the quarterback position, but did not go into specifics.

Bears announce coach Matt Nagy, GM Ryan Pace will return after 'impressive' finish to 2020

"Apparently matt nagy is going to make it to next year. The bears are gonna keep him the head coach. The general manager ryan pays. Who may have been more maligned than nagy. Decline the fifth year option trubisky. But it's still an option to bring him back in some way our jeff dickerson who covers the bears is essentially reporting. Nagy and pace will be back. Our dan orlovsky is voicing his opposition. What has matt nagy done as for his a an organizer as far as a leader as far as a person with foresight within their organization to say yes in that head coaching role. We love them. Now we're going to allocate some of the play calling responsibilities or the offensive viewpoint. Who are we going to give that to. And what has matt nagy done within. That building approve on great in this role. I understand what dan is coming from. But i think in this situation. He has a winning record. Chuck pagano is retiring as a defense coordinator so he's got to his staff and his thought process in his thinking. Maybe there's a guy or two out there that is really good at calling. Plays really good at putting a system in place to make. Whoever the quarterback is going to be in the future for them successful. So i'm okay with them taking a look see. They just went to the playoffs. So you take a look in just poo. poo it. because you've got to restart things all over again when you completely blow everything up so give it a shot in twenty twenty one see where it's at. He's going to be before you make that decision and that move now mr bisky mitch. Trubisky is jockeying for position to come back and be the chicago. Bears starting quarterback again. Now maybe there's a small deal there because they didn't pick up the fifth year option. There's a small little deal. Maybe there's a two year deal. That is a proven deal that he can now show with a new office coordinator his abilities that he showed in north carolina and made them take him as a number two pick overall.

"For one, the Bears defensive coordinator is retiring. But the bigger news from now multiple sources of bread Biggs the trip had it first. The rumor flying around the NFL right now is that the Bears will retain general Manager Ryan Pace and head coach Mad Maggie into 2021. That's what folks working in the league have heard. We'll see if the team is something this evening, but that is the chatter that is out there right now. "Hope to become just the second team in 30 years to reach the postseason After enduring a six game losing streak. Head coach Matt Nagy says his team is eager to prove that they can do it your competitors, and they know that they can play a lot better, and so they're motivated. I don't think it's all for them. And it's more about just going out and doing things and playing fast, you know. So you see, see guys like You see guys like Khalil like like I came like road Kwan, you know on Danny, and there's a bunch of those guys that their pride and they care about how they play this game, not only for themselves, but for their team. "Kansas city with six consecutive playoff berth. Clinching the spot with what was narrow win over denver mahomes yet another three hundred yard passing game with no turnovers elsewhere. Kirk cousins kept the vikings in the playoff hunt. Three touchdowns helped erase a double digit deficit before dan. Bailey kicked a game. Winning field goal in overtime. Vikings back to five hundred and then is mitchell trubisky and the bears ten point lead late in the fourth quarter fumble leading to a pair of lines touchdowns and the bears lose again their sixth straight defeat after starting the season five and one and that was the conversation. That was focused on quarterbacks rex. Where your mind goes because the bears and that defense had a ten point lead in the fourth quarter. What yeah no. If you're the real deal then that game's over regardless of stupid play by the quarterback trubisky and and the play call the questionable. Play call at that situation. If you're that team the grind clark and i have been on those teams games overdue. It's flat out over if we're gonna show you how good we are. How great we are i instead that team right. There gave up four hundred fifty yards to the detroit lions. Yeah you really that good forget about you wanted your own i did. You never liked the eighty five bears. Well guess what you can't hold their jockstrap. And i'm sick and tired saying that you're good defense. Most talented deep dang danger. Don't play that. Yeah i see look. This is a team that a few weeks ago. I remember we were talking about the defense looking side. I'd the court the offense because they're struggling so much and again. They're in position to win the game. I'm getting so sick and tired of you. Guys talking out of both sides of your mouth. What do we always say. We wanna team to be together. We want total chemistry. We want complimentary cal not a bears fan not embarrassed land complimentary football. It sucked to what we want. Is it this. Why matt nagy was was brought to chicago so to offense defense would be on the same level you have it and get it and you wanna be right. This is not what it used to be. It's not what it even. Starting the season as being is not what we saw on thursday night against the tampa bay buccaneers and the question was asked early on in the season. It does this eventually wear on. The chicago bears defense. That's an excuse because of the field. It's those eleven players that are coach to play defense at at our coach to stop people. "Here's part one well as promised extremely excited about today's guests a guy that I guess I kind of knew since my rookie year and two thousand one I think he might be the only person I was ever a member of Turgen ization with in the scouting part of it. At least it's kind of funny, we never really talked about it, and really ever only had a couple of conversations, but he is now the executive director of the senior bowl does a terrific job there. I mean, the senior bowl has just taken off and he didn't outstanding job this past year and was a scout for almost twenty years before that he is Jim Nagy, Jim, what's up man? Iran. Sorry about, hey, I gotta start with this because I go over this all over this all the time with matinee being from where I'm from in Pennsylvania. Nagy nagy. What are we going with? I go Nagy because it's easier you know, I'm not one of the I could go the other man. Really? Honestly, it whatever whatever's give you I'm fine. I'm not gonna I'm not gonna split hairs over it. I'm good. It's funny, because that's been like a major issue in Chicago, where half. The people say, Nagy half the people say Nagee, and I guess Matt told people it's actually like, hey, like Nagy. So it's actually even if it's even harder. It's in between. Well, if you go back to the motherland in Hungary, it's pronounced nudge. So, yeah, it's kind of obscure name here in the United States, but it's actually Smith. If you go over to Hungary, it's the most common surname over there. So. Yeah, we'll, we'll go, what whatever works raw down. All right. So I wanna start Jim we're gonna make this a two parter because I wanna to do a whole episode just on the senior bowl and what an event and business. That's become. "Have now you have my goverry. So they have their pick guys in now, basically, Matt Nagy just go to work. And work your magic, and let's get to the Super Bowl. He moved up fourteen spots pace did from number eighty seven up to number seventy three fourteen stats up. They gave up a fourth round pick and next year in a fifth round pick this year to move up for teen. And they got six this year, so the confusing, but when you do the numbers, which I did for on the draft pick chart value thing, whatever they, you know. Meshes out measures. I'd just about equal, which is, you know, not that that's the ABI L Endo. The only thing you can look at it. But I know they use that. Or they use different sources was closed gonna do. They do at the end of the day. I don't care. Right. If they if they pick guys that are going to help the team win. I don't care if they gave up an extra pick. They wanted the guy that they wanted naturally they did. And you know, Matt Nagy wanted a guy Ryan pace one at a guy, they moved up get them. And what happened basically is it was three spots after the Rams took a running back in one spot before buffalo took one. So maybe they were concerned that buffalo was going to grab their guy. But you know, what we've learned when he wants his guy who didn't care, right. I'm getting my guy. I'll move up. I'll do whatever I have to do within reason. Hopefully, he actually said earlier in the week that there are set a running back that was the one guy I pasted pay. No attention to the Bambi. We're good at running back. We're fine which told you that's what they're doing. Right. There's a good chance that they will find another one right people thought they would go after running back. They did. And now they got four more picks today. We've got the draft coming for you at eleven o'clock. That's why we got a quick to our show. Jim everything in fourth a new number excuse me. A for a new number six in the two existing sevens. Right. Yeah. Four six seven seven. Well, we, you know, we like to talk fans, I was wish read somebody right now that could actually.

"You know, whatever, you deem is being the range with which you know, he needs to be paid. If you're not comfortable paying him there. And you think that you have another alternative that will give your team a chance both short term in long-term to be better. Then I'm all for the go ahead and do it. Go ahead. That's fine. I'm just saying as an overall blanket philosophy to say once a quarterback reaches upper echelon status, you just gotta let them go ahead and walk down the road and find the next guy because of this will hamstring your team as far as you being able to get other guys. I think that that's ignorant. I don't I don't think that's true. But if if the Sokoto bears of Matt Nagy feels as though look I can do better. There's someone I can get my hands on who was going to do better. Who's going to open up our offense more give us a better chance to win regardless of where where we drafted Mitch in regards to the fact of how important this position is look then go ahead and move on. I'm all for it. I'm just saying case of Russell out. It is. It is good. It is. But you don't see that takes confidence in your eye for you know, being able to evaluate your own on it. It takes confidence in your eye to be able to evaluate people on the outside who you're going to bring into your organization. It takes confidence in your ability to extract. You know, the best play you can possibly extract for them from them. Once you get once, you get them that means that you have to be confident in what your own program in which your own teaching protocol is the strength of your coaching staff to strengthen the players surrounding this kid. It takes confidence a lot of things in quite honestly, I think that that kind of sums it up for me. I don't I don't think people really have confidence in their programs, otherwise they wouldn't constantly be looking for easy ways to try to. To try to construct football teams in ways in which they could, you know, I guess this cover their rear ends and say, look, this is the way things people are doing things right now. This is the way I'm going to do things. And if it doesn't work out, I can just point to the fact that well that's the trend right now. That's the way. And and that's what seems to be happening. As far as quarterbacks discussion. The trend is an in the prevailing wisdom is in the narrative is you have to have a young quarterback in that way. You can destroy money at the rest of the roster and you increase your chances of being successful. And it just it's not that simplistic, it's not it's case by case. And as you mentioned with Mitch Trubisky. It's going to be that's going to be a very interesting case because I think that could go either way it really could go with them. I I mean, I think after the season if he's stays at the same level of play lost your he's a young guy. So I'm not, you know, who knows they should definitely at least draft draft in develop. They will be entertaining other options. There's no there's no question about it. If he doesn't and as far as like this veteran a conversation. I think you're right. Like it is on the team to draft and develop around the. Veteran and there's no better example than this things who again should have been in the Super Bowl last year. And it's just so funny how these small sample size in the NFL dictate. Our how we talk about trends when the right call is made. And it's we had to veterans..

"Or that we live in the matrix or whatever take your pick. You know, there's only this thirty two head coaching jobs in the NFL, and several of them are kind of entrenched for some time. And yet you'd look no further than Larry wisdom's young protege that Nagy take new for the team that this guy. Larry wisdom grew up living. Yes. That's that's that's a crazy twist of all right is Larry grew up in suburban Chicago. Matt did not know this until he got the bears job had no idea that Larry was a lifelong die hard. There's fan who you know. Love the eighty five bears couldn't stand. Mark Trestman central. Seriously. And all of a sudden, you know, this man, who he you know, becomes friends with kind of helps send on this journey. It all comes full circle, and he becomes the head coach of his favorite team, which is super super cool. And you know, he he told me about, you know, coming here last may, and you know, they went to dinner, and you don't want to house hall, Matt showed him all around. And, you know, saw the, you know, everything, you know, the pictures of pay and everything that that, you know, building. And just you know, it was amazing. And and he and he said to me he goes, look he goes, of course, it's super cool to have a friend of mine who's the head coach of the bears now. Right. That's awesome. But more importantly, he's I'm excited that that Matt Nagy as the coach the bears, and I know this guy, and I know what he's about leaders skills. That's the guy. I want coaching my team, you know, even if we were never friends, and I didn't know him. He's the right guy to help my team get to where I wanted to go, which is super cool. So the last question last you is as a as a bears fan speaking of of bears nation. We've let the dust. Settle the now that you can have a nice healthy chuckle because the eagles lost. Do you agree with what wisdom said as you close the piece, which is quote, I can't wait to see what happens. Absolutely for sure percent. I do you know, I think through the course of the last couple of days with you know, Vic Fangio taking the job in Denver. There was some uncertainty as bear Spanish who would still that spot. I will tell you. I think Chuck Pagano is is a perfect fit. And I think him and Matt have similar leadership styles. And that that couldn't be any better in the defense will be in really really good hands. It'll be it'll be interesting to see what Matt does now with another year where he was Mitch Trubisky. If you think about it, you know, not to not to put these kinds of expectations on Pat or on Mitch, but that had a full year of working with was Mahomes before before Mahomes had this incredible year. He had and this is his first year working with Mitch. So I think there's some expectation that he will be even better next year. And if that's the case. Still in good shape. The one thing obviously is you know, they were they were pretty lucky this year in terms of injuries. Nothing. You know, Eddie Jackson missed I honestly the season. But you never know what's gonna happen in that regard. And you know, if your quarterback blows out his knee or something Sokoto back or whatever everything go up in smoke. But at least it looks on paper. They look really good team. And he looks like the right guy to lead that group through what will be a much more challenging schedule next year for sure Mitch Trubisky, and Matt Nagy in my opinion for a little bit more hope than for example, lovey Smith and Rex Grossman. Bye. No, no question. No question. So I think I think part of it too. I think you know, Matt. If they're smoking to say to be critical of him. I think he was a little bit too conservative with his offense at the end of the year. Not wanting not wanting Mitch to make mistakes and put them in a spot that would sort of threaten that really good defense. And I think Mitch has the ability talents who we saw that last. Dr do a lot more than I think he was allowed to do 'specially late in the year. So I think another offseason them working together and understand each other. I think you know, metal take those handcuffs off and you'll see a team. That's hopefully, you know, just as explosive on offense as they are as dominate defense. Now, his former employees his friend who being the one stomping along the Soldier Field sideline leading his favorite football team. It's a real wisdom says for Larry to be a diehard bears fan. Just how crazy life is Nagy added. Wisdom hadn't been waiting long when Nagy walked into the restaurant in may he gave Nagy hog and told him he had two things to get off his chest. I told him one year not all that wisdom laughed your work in progress. And to we sit down people's heads are going to sweat on loci way. Somebody's gonna ask for autograph? Probably my autograph just deal with it comes with the territory, just go with it. And we can get through this dinner over the span of a couple of hours nagging wisdom, joked laughed and reminisced they talked about family, and faith and Nagy's ideas on how to build a winning culture with the bears and they reflect. It on the unlikely path that brought them to this point. It was a very serious agenda. Wisdom says are Castelli I had to give him all those trick plays. The next day Nagy gave wisdom tour of Halas hall since then wisdom is followed this bear season as closely as any keeping in touch with Nagy through Tex along the way, and he can't believe the bears are three wins away from the Super Bowl things in large part to the man he met in Lancaster that night trying to put football in his past. I'm so excited for Matt. Of course wisdom says, but I'm just as excited as a bears fan we wanna Super Bowl, and I know he's wired elitist there it won't be because he's waving a magic wand or calling the right plays. It's about his leadership skills inner strength and his ability to get the most out of the people around him. I believe in Matt now just like I did ten years ago. And I can't wait to see what happens joining me now is ESPN's wage raise Wayne once again, thank you making the time. We waited a week here. The dust is settled the while the term double doing it to Chicago fans like yourself is a four letter word. There is something I wanna point out to you. Well as a huge Boston sports fan. And of course, now in twenty nineteen clearly universally hated people need to understand that. For there was a stretch of time as we would say decades where the Celtics were pretty good. And then everyone else was a disaster. And they were terrible. And the thing is it's one thing to not win. But it's one another thing to not win. And there's no hope the difference here with the Chicago Bears as I feel that for the future. There is a lot of hope. The seeing as a fan Zo, Mike is as I said, a friend of mine there will not be a more enjoyable bear season with this group, then the one that just ended. Yeah. And the reason is next year will come expectations and at some point along the way they will lose a game. They shouldn't lose Mitch Trubisky. We'll have three interceptions in a game. He shouldn't have had three interceptions and the whole world will look like it's ending. I mean, I I would argue that the unexpected twenty fifteen cubs now, obviously, you know, take winning the World Series aside through the course of the season was more enjoyable than the twenty sixteen team just because of those expectations. So yes, there's hope but with that comes the idea of you darn well wanna make sure they delivered given the

"Pitch. Ten minutes into that dinner. Wisdom realized this was far more than a favor for a friend wisdom found Nagy authentic personable smart confident he loved his communication skills. And he was drawn to his sense of humility and coach ability all the things people love about him. And Chicago came across that night. Wisdom said after three. Hours of conversation. Wisdom got to the point. I said to your has to me for a role in which you have absolutely no experience. Wisdom says a role that hundreds of other people would want how can you possibly make the case that it would make sense for me to hire? You Nagy didn't flinch he promised to out work and out anyone in the company. He told wisdom do everything he could learn cell and eventually become wanna keystone, custom homes leader's wisdom liked everything. He heard but worried about Nagy returning to football. His passion for the game was obvious. But Nagy promised his playing days were in the past. He talked it over with Stacy. And they agreed. This was the best move for his family to build a successful business career and volunteers coach on the side after two more meetings. Wisdom offered Nagy the only position he could give a nagging lack of experience a commission based sales job. But with a growing family at home Nagy needed a consistent income he negotiated a salary of one hundred thousand dollars a year. No commission wisdom. Agreed. It was instinct and guts, not exactly good business. Wisdom says I was building for now in the future. And that's why I was willing to take the risk. I believed in Matt and what he could do for our company long-term says Nagy for Larry to jump into my life and take care of me the way he did. It was just special. Sometimes I believe people are brought into your life for certain reasons, and he did that he took care of me. Football comes calling. Nagy spent his first four months on the job learning everything he could about the keystone custom homes operation in June two thousand nine he was finally able to represent the company on the sales floor and impor- weeks amid one of the worst real estate slumps in fifty years Nagy manage to sell six homes I began to see this vision. I had for match potential starting to come true. Wisdom says but a month later football came calling again, one of Nagy's, Delaware. Teammates Brett VH was working with the Philadelphia Eagles and invited Nagy spent three weeks as a coaching intern during training camp Nagy hit intern with the eagles the summer before. But now life was different. He was a few months into a promising new career. He had promised he was done with football. How could he ask for three weeks off these reminded Nagy of the ramifications of saying no out of sight outta mind? He explained I always looked at him as a leader. And a guy who had great ability to communicate and deliver. A message said. VH now general manager of the Kansas City Chiefs. He was one of those guys who instantly prompted to my mind knowing him as a leader competitive and a player that he would be able to transition those skills over to the coaching side Nagy called wisdom explained the opportunity apologize for even bringing it up. He made it clear that if wisdom didn't want him to go, or if it would in any way jeopardize his standing with the company Nagy would say no family was the priority wisdom instead said, yes, I saw it as a business development exercise. Wisdom says I figured he would come back and beyond fire selling homes, I told her to go and get everything out of it that he could. And when it was over come back here and get back to work Nagy did just that with an asterisk when quarterback Kevin Cobb. Sprained a ligament in his knee and training camp. The eagles quickly signed Nagy to their eighty man roster opposing teams cried foul insisting Philadelphia was roster. Stashing by signing a coaching intern who had attended meetings and thrown passes during training camp drills. A day after Nagy signed his contract was next and when his internship ended. He was back selling homes and never I second that I have the thought it would happen. Again, was them says go chase your dream eight months later Nagy set in his office in the converted garage of spec. Home working on some closing papers for a sale when his cell phone rang the area code red two one five Philadelphia on the other line was Andy Reid offering a fulltime job as coaches assistant with the eagles for forty five thousand dollars a year. It was a huge pay cut mostly grunt work, but he'd get his foot in the door. Retold Nagy talk it over a Stacey. That talk west did two minutes before Nagy could accept. There was a phone call. He had to make it was a little after ten thirty at night when wisdom cell phone rang during a late dinner, he saw Nagy's number and assume there was an issue with a customer wisdom stepped out of the restaurant two blocks from his home as wisdom listened to Nagy explained the opportunity. Ity with the eagles. He could sense the uneasiness and his voice he said something about not wanting to let me down. Wisdom says he was uncomfortable with breaking the commitment. He had made I told him that you did the integrity thing he were straightforward and honest with me, there's something bigger going on here. Oh chase your dream. Neither one of us knows where it's gonna lead go. Chase your dream Nagy took the pay cut and bet on himself for a year. He woke up at three thirty in the morning and drove one hundred miles each way from Lancaster to Philly some nights he would just sleep in the eagles offices. He tried to soak up everything he could from read and the entire Philadelphia operation. He did a lot of the dirty work in the grunt work for. Andy says Riddick whose office was just down the hall from Nagy. I said in on a lot of game plan meetings. He'd come asked me a lot of things that I said I saw versus what he saw. I knew he had a great football mind says Nagy, I was the assistant to the assistant once I got in the door. I knew I would make it
