Chicago Bears acquire Nick Foles from Jacksonville Jaguars

"Like Chicago Bears traded Ford Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Nick Foles yesterday and I'm not sure there any quarterbacks who have had a stranger career than Nick Foles everybody knows about that incredible postseason run with the eagles in twenty seventeen the rest of his resume is kind of spotty had one season where he threw twenty seven touchdowns and two interceptions the best team need to interception ratio in NFL history but that was with chip Kelly number one ship was reinventing the NFL back in twenty thirteen with the eagles he's one of a handful quarterbacks ever throw seven touchdowns in a game so he's done incredible things went toe to toe with Brady in the Superbowl but he's also had a disappointing season with the rams a backup with the chiefs disastrous contract in Jacksonville that wasn't his fault got injured in Jacksonville now he's reunited with former offense to coach Matt Nagy in Chicago so which Nicole shows up who knows and is he good enough to beat out Mitchell Trubisky all we know is falls is not scared you don't want to play against him in a big game the question is will the bears get that far where he plays in a

Jaguars trade former Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles to Chicago

"Let's get started with Adam schefter on this breaking news regarding former Super Bowl. Winning quarterback Nick foles like will be reunited with Matt Nagy on his way to Chicago. What can you tell us about? Details choosy moments ago the Jacksonville Jaguars in Chicago bears agreed on a trade that will send the bears compensatory fourth round. Pick the one hundred forty eighth overall selection to Jacksonville in return for Nick Volks. Who COMES INTO CHICAGO AND KNOWS THE COACHING STAFF? Where he worked with Matt Nagy in Philadelphia he worked with. He worked with John De Filippo in Philadelphia. He wrote with Bill Laser Philadelphia. And they believe that it's going to be a source of comfort for them to get that done and that will be a big move for the Chicago bears. They felt like they had to get a veteran. The Jaguar spoke to the colts about a trade for Nick foles. The colts decided to go with Philip Rivers. They talked to the bears. The bears get done. That trade at foals is owed a lot of money. What do you know right now about how they redo this deal to make it work for everyone? Well listen. They could sit down and restructure that contract and perhaps they do that but the deal just came down as we speak and so we're waiting to see

How to Chill Out About (and in) Your Home Podcast

"Rid of my own stuff and neutral staff makes me feel less suffocated in my house. And so my husband's clutter doesn't bug me like it used to. I know some of you are sitting there thinking. There is no bad emma. Husbands clutter will ever not bog may and that's fine you know and maybe that's true but I'm not going to believe you until you told me you've already declared your own stuff in neutral stuff k. Don't assume that you know the whole point of this conversation happening was that it was a surprise was that they were surprised as me at the difference that it made to just focus on my own stuff and neutral stuff that my house felt more under control and by my house feeling more under control that one part of clutter. That wasn't in my control. That wasn't something I could deal with. It didn't get under my skin like it used to and so I was able to enjoy my house. I've heard the same thing from people talking about how they're more willing for their kids to bring their favorite toy or legos or whatever into the living room to play with it because they don't feel this overall completely overwhelmed out of control feeling about their house and the clutter okay and so this is what I'm talking about when the whole house feels out of control when you it's just this general ambiguous we have too much stuff. We don't put things back. We don't have places for everything and then one tway coming out into the middle of the floor to get played with. Feels like Oh my word. Now there's not even the middle of the floor anymore but when the overall decluttering has been happening when you're starting to get the living room declutter down to the point where only stuff that really deserves to be in there and make living easier and more comfortable is in there then toys. Coming out into the middle of the living room are just toys coming out in the middle of the living room. They're not things taking up the last little tiny bit of space that we have. That's not cluttered. Do you see what I'm saying? And so it helps to chill out when the overall decluttering has been happening when there is just I mean. Here's the thing if you have a wall full of stuff stacked from the floor to the ceiling. It's just a wall full of stuff whether or not half of it is your husband's half of it is yours and I was gonna say an half but that does not add up. Mathematically so I'm not GonNa say it a third of is your. Let's say half of it is your husband's a quarter of it is yours and a quarter of it. Is neutral stuff. Okay that that's not going to be something he would take personally if you got rid of if you only focus on getting rid of the neutral stuff and your stuff that room is going to be half as overwhelming and I will say that. It's going to be more than half less than half. Yeah whatever the good one is as overwhelming as it was before when you get rid of half of the stuff okay. It's not just in the whole house is going to feel more under control. It's GONNA feel more. You're going to be more able to live in that space. And of course you hope that eventually he's GonNa go. Wow it's nicer in here with less stuff. I'm going to get rid of my stuff. But even if he doesn't you are able to chill out and enjoy that space a whole lot more because the math part in my brain is not making sense anymore but anyway a whole lot more just because you've gotten rid of your stuff and you're able to chill out and his staff is GonNa bug you less because it's it's not just less stuff it's also not the whole room. That's completely overwhelming anymore now. It's a section of the room as opposed to just overall. Oh my goodness we are just completely in horrible shape in this just saying okay it really really does make a difference and what was interesting was in. This conversation is a lot of different people have been telling me this exact same thing is. I'm really amazed at how much less other people's stuff bugs me. Once I've dealt with my own stuff okay because it's not just a mass of stuff and there's definitely stuff in there that I'm not going to be able to deal with. I know that for sure and you know how many times people like me people like us. We tend to if we know that three things out of the pile of fifty things are honestly truly things that we are not going to be able to do anything about. It makes the pile itself feel overwhelming and like something that we can't even get started then case a we are paralyzed from decluttering at all. Because we know that there are Steph in that there are things in this pile that are going to be. You know just hopeless that we can't even deal with but the reality is we can deal with the forty seven other things or even deal with ten other things and that overall thing is just as an overall pile of stuff is going to be less visually overwhelming and because it's less visually overwhelming. I'm going to be able to function better and Enjoy my home. War doesn't make sense. I sure hope so anyway and then obviously something. I hear all the time I say. Obviously if you're new here you may be thinking. Oh shucks laundry. She's GonNa say the same thing every other housekeeping person's is in that is Dewan load everyday. Well guess what I don't say that ever that is the complete opposite of what I say because that does not work for me. I leave the loads in there and they mildew and then I watched the same load over and over and I never actually make traction in my laundry but getting laundry under control. It affects the whole house it effects. The I mean the whole beauty of laundry day. Okay so what I do for those of you. That are new as I do. Laundry Day And that means that we all are dirty clothes get put into piles and I worked through those even if it takes more than a day. It's still one days job. Go listen to the laundry podcast. If you don't know what that means but anyway it's still one job and when it's done I don't have to worry about it till the next Monday will that right. There helps me chill out about my house so much I mean I don't sit every single day and think we all have clean underwear in our drawers. We all have cleaned drawers and our doors for the next five days came. We all have cleaned drawers and our jurors for the next four days. We all have no the beauty of it is. I don't have to worry about it. I don't even have to think about it because I know that I did laundry laundry day so I know that we have a week's worth of clothes that are clean and ready to go and I know that I don't need to feel guilty about not doing laundry today. Which helps me chill out about my house. It's when I didn't have a laundry routine that it was just always this nagging feeling of Ohio new to do laundry laundry. Oh I'm going to send so behind on laundry. Oh I have no idea if everybody's GonNa have what they need for school tomorrow. Even though I wasn't consciously thinking those things either they were always on my mind because it was always an issue in our house and so just the reality of laundry having its own routine meant that those things we're not weighing on my mind anymore and I was able to enjoy my house without feeling constant nagging back of my mind and not really sure what it is but it's laundry guilt for those six days of the week. Okay now it's like okay. I'm GONNA tackle this. So so what are the keys to all of this? I mean I'm sure you've already kind of figured it out. It's having a routine. It is not necessarily always having the dishes done as much as it is. Having a dishes routine to know that the dishes dishes are going to get done consistently. It is not about never having any dirty clothes in the bottom of the laundry hamper. It's about being able to rest in the fact and know that there is a laundry routine that laundry routine works for you and your family and your brain style and your lifestyle and you can trust and rest knowing that your family is going to have the clothes that they need when they need them. Okay so it's about those routines and then it's about decluttering. Remember the beauty of decluttering. Is that once something leaves Your House. It's not in there anymore and you don't ever have to worry about it again. It takes off of your mind. It's not something to Nagy you anymore. So decluttering has great long-term effects. Because then you don't have to move those things around anymore. You don't have to shift things anymore because they're gone. Okay so keys are identify what you can control. Okay when we're talking here specifically when I say chill out. I'm sure you've already figured out that a lot of times. I'm talking about chill out with the other people in Your Family K. Chill out and give up on making sure that they do everything. The absolute perfect way that you figured out needs to be done okay. So that's a big part of what we're talking about here is being able to enjoy your house being able to enjoy your family and not resent the fact of what they're doing or not doing that's messing everything up for you. Okay and keys there. Identify what you can control. What can you do you can do the dishes? You want to bring the kids in on that. Go right ahead. That's awesome but do the dishes whatever it takes because that is something you can control you. Wash the dish drive the dish you put it away. It's done you don't have to think about it anymore. Okay work hard on finding the routine that works for you rather than focusing on establishing routine okay so this is one of the reasons why I say. Do the dishes instead of saying. Here's your nightly checklist of things that you need to get done or here. You know I don't say do if I'm going to pick up for you go to bed. I just say do a five minute pickup. Because it's going to different for everybody. Some people have very predictable evening routines we had predictable evening routines at certain points in our lives. When we knew that almost every single day of the week we were going to be home at a certain time and going to bed at a certain time and Blah Blah Blah. We're not in that stage of life anymore and even when we were I was never good at remembering to always do the five minute pickup right before bed. Okay so instead of saying okay. I've got to find this checklist of five things. I need to do throughout the day and make sure I do them instead. Say Okay what does it mean in my personal house to keep the dishes done? Have the dishes done at some point during the day every single day? What does that mean if you work nights you know we? I talked to Elizabeth. You know she worksites and she is exhausted when she comes in. And it's not necessarily practical when she's exhausted gets home at midnight or whatever and her family is already in bed for her to say. Okay I'm going to go and do the dishes. And then she's also presenting the fact that they didn't get them done in all. I mean you know. That's putting words in her mouth. She I don't know that she said that. But anyway but but you can see how you might feel that way right so instead of worrying about that. Just say okay. What does it mean in my house? I'm just going to focus on finding their routine that works in my

It’s Super Bowl Week

"David Tyree catch Malcolm Butler picked what do you want to force always forward to is super bowls of Jim Nagy the the senior bowl Reese's senior bowl director joins us now you're the show opens up a foreman plan Jim you know I love bringing those two losses up over the four winds because they are the two of the more historic losses we've ever seen in Super Bowl history how are your partner I'm doing great intake from young Courtney yeah that that's the worst part of Superbowl time for me now with all the highlight packages before lead up to the game always showed up to play its role and you were part of obviously yes as I mentioned to both of them before we get into the game and taking us behind the scenes what it's like for coaches scouts during Super Bowl week listless codes back to the Reese's senior bowl when you go back and look at the film and practice and the guys who really stood out give us a few names for every NFL team RB well and fell fans team is not in the Superbowl a few people that that could help their team coming up next season and I wanna drafted in April yeah it's you know we've actually been doing that the last couple days in the office that would be that you could director the game week itself I I'm walking around in and you know talking to GM's and coaches and trying to reconnect with people at an end this year we had some we took some roster hits during the week so I was trying to fill it roster holster practice so we better go back to the tape but a couple of years but a bunch of players that have stood out but dental dams to wide receiver from Baylor had a great week six six three two hundred fifteen pounds what is the right of Baylor another one Antonio Guinea gold and is another big receiver from liberty six four two twenty had a great week chase Claypool with six four two thirty really good we got a Notre Dame another deep inside of all Josh you Jay really stood out you know it's a linebacker for Michigan he can play off the ball he can play Alanis courage you can rush the passer are you sure all of that during the practice week so the cool thing was during the week this this your guys we we we we voted on our practice player the week we had that we have the players do it and I I felt like that meant a lot more to them that it came from their peers and and we really have to position group they went against the most during the week so line voted on the line no corners vote in a white out invites versus so I posted those on our on our Twitter and everything so everyone could see those entry now going back to watch the tape I think the players really got it right we love talking about quarterbacks it really is never too early to start stacking your board will who stood out to you the most in a jail it hurts is obviously the big name coming into the week but by the end of the week where do you I guess you're one through three who should we be looking at that position what are your according Jaylen with it was a big name come in a week if you the big week all week you know just from is tied to the state of Alabama with our game beautiful Beale everything it up did up in Tuscaloosa I DO and had a really strong week he really did you got better you know you got better as the week went on kind of like Daniel Jones did last year Justin Herbert what the overall practice player of the week again voted on by the players that that he was the game MVP as well so just in case a minute really he lit up every day he's got everything you need the big very intelligent death politic you got a strong arm he was accurate all week in really what he showed behind the scenes with the answer a lot of questions that people might have about the leadership and I I don't know why they were questions out there about that but the time Justin he's got a he's got a really good way about him teammates really responded to him all week we put him in a bunch of different situations where you have to show that leadership he just to be just a great kid I got a talking to dad they they did a great job with this on it it made me think yet enjoyed love would be the other one throw that grow in that mix and their direct your junior from Utah state who really talented really natural thrower you know do a great ball all week we just they were so far we've just gone through the one on one at that and a little bit of the team here at seventeen got to the game yet but but Jordan had a really strong week and then in the game entity Gordon for Washington state but the offer the player the game for his side you know he was backed up Gardner Menchu last year in Washington state if you've gotten sandlot look them up all or two and then you get the game to do just make things happen so many did that on Saturday the other quarterback group is really strong this year Jim nagging at the senior bowl director here with us on it pretty fits image on ESPN radio according Cronin infer Freddy I mean if it's Simmons and an elaborate a little bit more on Jordan love because talking to a tech coach Gary Andersen a Utah state he likened him to possibly when it comes to do the draft stock the next to Josh Alan where his stock could skyrocket during Super Bowl week DD do you agree with that do you think he had that kind of a week yes interval week but I got you here right coach any any any you know he's but he's wanted a lot of places and I think that your Jordan came into the year with a really high expectations there was a lot of media types that first round great Doug Jordan enter in sort of the league so that we you know him being a junior graduate are fortunate enough to get him and he didn't have the kind of the year that that maybe a lot of people expected at Utah state I think the no the coaching change you know at definitely had something to do with it it's it's hard it's hard runner whose game the first year that's why what Joe burrow did with Joe Brady coming in for the St Louis with you know even more impressive like I don't think Joe burrows got enough credit for that he was running a scheme for the first time but you know in Jordan I think Jordan might've been feeling the expectations of of the first round step two we don't have a chance to really talk about that when he came down to mobile last week but but the judge with the Josh our comparison it is a very good one you know Josh was the guy that statistically didn't have a great last year while making that came down to to your call and let it up but we all know how that turned out he went seventh overall so could Jordan get back up in the top ten I mean I I don't know that I mean that's that's pretty lofty but he did he did everything you could do down here you such a natural pro respond watch all week so it'll just be like you're the profits worry and up but I do think it's gonna be a starter at the next level one of my favorite assignments that we do every year at the senior bowl from ESPN will go around and ask outs kind of for their take on what they're seeing it practice and since it is Superbowl week it's always fun to hear the comparisons to guys were being you are playing in the game currently it in Harrison Bryant from Florida Atlantic one of our so you know one of our reporters ask out and he said quote he can beat George cattle two point now do you see that sort of comparison you know here so it's really good the past game it really is I mean Kittles kills really developed in a such a good blocker into get Georgia's coming out of that I will program where they used the tide and a lot of a lot of scrimmage though this from a background standpoint here isn't going to be a little bit behind for work short was coming out in any not quite as big a body of George kill but in the past can definitely you know higher than what the Mackey award for a reason because he can you know he's really good after the cat he's he's really athletic you catch the ball it is really good after the catch in which you didn't really see it after you he didn't run a whole you know he did run a a lot of it run a lot of different routes and that's what the that's what the scalp got that the that this week in mobile was with him running all those route that is going to have to do with the next level and his ability to separate get open yeah I mean I think you're the couple tied into this year's group Paris and be in one of them you know a guy Bryson Hopkins from Purdue had a great week out and drop in a small school player gate and had a great week I think I think those three guys might be the you know the first three cat up the board this year what is the deepest position group that you have observed so far you know it's probably what out in again a lot of it has to do with the junior class is really strong at the top with jury duty he Nick in the engine all from Colorado I mean there's a lot of good ones but the senior class is loaded you know we had with a guy come to mobile and it is a little banged up when he got here so we had to you know he didn't pass the physical but Brandon are you calling from Arizona state is a really explosive guy I think he's going to go in the first round and then all those names I mentioned before you know it getting including those K. J. hill mile state with the guy that was voted Platt practice clear the week from his side of it from inside of the team so then it is wide receiver crew it's all going to depend on where that run happens you know I think there's teams that are probably feel like they've got it well enough where they can wait to the third or fourth round and get a starter you know maybe hit on the next Terry McLaurin who is in the funeral last year when the third round it as you guys know how to add an unbelievable you rookie year for for the Redskins so but it you know how many first rounder that'll just be you know when they start going they start calling everyone kind of panic that it it starts taking them so depending on when their run goes it'll be interesting but there's a bunch of first round talent type receivers Mr strapped Reese's senior bowl director four time Super Bowl champion Jim Nagy here with us on ESPN radio Corning Corning ami AMP at Simmons and let's get to the Superbowl you you watch that game also as much as anybody and you scouted take us

Why won't NFL teams hire minority coaches?

"Three head. Coaching spots have been filled this week. But none of those. Three coaches were minorities while the Rooney rule has been followed. Some are beginning to believe that minority forty candidates are not being taken seriously for the open jobs and anonymous African American. NFL Assistant Coach said that the League has quote finally shown. It's not the place as for black men to advance. It's ridiculous it's disgusting. We can sell tickets and make plays but we can't lead Shannon. Why isn't the Rooney rule role working? Well I think until skip this diversity thing yeah. Diversity is a great great to talk about but until you get someone the leadership position that says you know what. I don't just want to talk about it. I want to be about it so until you get older ships that actually wants to put some substance to this and this is what that you're GonNa get now if the general manager there's one general manager that's what minority and that's CR- Chris greer in Miami. There's zero owners that are it shouldn't say minorities. I guess because shot con radically a minority. But when you get the gist of what I what. I'm trying to say until leadership gets more diverse. You're I'm not gonNA have a more diverse hiring background skills. This was puzzling to be. Is that Eric. Enemy has the exact Zac job that Matt Nagy had negative and call plays any recall. Please man they can get the job. Doug Peterson sedinko plays true. Recall to play around Rivera's on but Ron Rivera was not the defensive coordinator in Philly. He he became a D. coordinator what's he got to the D. Coordinator in Chicago. You are you in San Diego. Yeah but he got his getting these enter coaching tree. Eric B enemy has the exact same job. That Matt Nagy Doug Peterson has and he's not getting opportunity is spirit but this. I don't really think that they go into it. Unless you incentivize this. Okay if you how minorities kill we maybe you have an extra three to five five dollars and cap space. That's the only thing that resonates with these owners because I get it skipped if I spent three billion. Let's just say I spent three billion dollars for a restaurant run. You Go tell me what the hell I need to cook. Cook whatever I WanNa Cook it there. And that's how they look at it. Jerry Jones spent money for this. This this mind you oh tell me why should get killed but but this notion that Oh and they brought Muhiba Marvin Marvin Lewis. He brought him in to to do that. Situation wasted the same with the giants the giants they had irebi enemy. They what Joe Judge Chris Rashard Rashard. Excuse me Chris Restoring. Yeah so now. Now we're down to one. Vacant Cleveland Reunion. I'm talking about how good already know. Angle get no frills JAYCO network skill. He already interviewed there. So you would now now the take my name off the leader and solid rubber solid. Take my name off the list. Because he's GonNa get Mad Max two and a half years if you're lucky that seems to instead that's all Jimmy can stomach now if you look at it they keep these. You look at Mike Patton. You look at all the guys they've had and these guys have had I think. Hugh Jackson stayed the longest at two and a half years. But everybody's been two years the list huge only two and a half two and a half long but you get you get these other guys you get pretty kitchens and you look at patent and you look at a I forget. Just give all these one year jazz. WE ACHE AAC CLEVELAND. That in Cleveland of the North this skill ruining rules a joke. I get it. You know minorities Cadillac. An affirmative action thanksgiving. Yeah but in -firmative action. I guess it's federal dollars. You'RE NOT GONNA get the money if you don't do this. The NFL is a is a private entity. So what can you do. What Ki- what can you give? Nfl Do not the so. I have been tracking this for a long time because one of my best friends is John. Wooten who is now the retired leader of the Fritz Pollard. Alliance and he was the driving force behind instituting the Rooney rule as I hiring practice in the national shirow all league and John's point from the start was I just need interviews because if a young assistant coach gets interviewed a couple of times times it gets reported in his name gets out there and if another owner sees that name enough over maybe a couple of years hiring cycles else maybe an owner says chee that guy. He's getting a lot of interviews. Maybe I should bring in. Maybe I should be more open minded to him. But if you're GONNA curse because if I get a a lot of interviews and I'm not getting hired was wrong why here the me getting hired cave liability with that. But John's point in the end was I'd rather have interviews than not have interests. Okay okay so let's go back to the stat that I use last week. The Institute of Diversity and Ethics In sports twenty nine thousand nine racial and gender report card for the National Football Bali. The League got actually an a plus for hiring of color. Assistant coaches right a sit a plot. Oh that's progress right. It got a deep loss for hiring head coach of Color White eight-plus assistance d-plus head head coaches. There's a big disconnect there and it shows you. That owners are fine. Oh hire two or three black assistant fine with that but nope nope. I don't want to head coach to be black. Right gives quite to the restaurant you can cook. You'll be in the bank but Michelle not the bridge. I roll up now okay so when I texted back and forth last we can use this last week of John Wooten just beside himself now. He is devastated by this this development his point was that only one. GM Chris Grin Miami. Point out is use. John's word heartbreaking because it could start with the GM right a black GM of or of color could be more open minded to say to the owner. Hey listen this guy is really bring him in. Let me let me introduce him to you right. The conduit to the owner can be stronger. Iran have I don't know six or eight black. GM right right. We've had them around the league four or but all of a sudden there's a dearth to rape Barma with Barma within Cleveland. He'd Gone Rick Smith who I know very well be in Denver. He interviewed for The Washington. Ashington John Daniel Snyder said head coach could be a head coach. Basically general manager after the Washington like who are the head coaching after the draft. The General Mattis. Okay so sometimes there is group think or shink sheep among the owners because in the end they do want to win right. And if they're looking around the League league and that black head coaches really successful they say well I want one of those. I want to go that direction right well. There was one black head coach who started to have success late in the year ear and he happened to be allied with Chris. Clear in Miami and Brian Floors off the Patriots. Well they started out all time badge for about what seven seven games fifty. Nine seven opening renders and then they basically it felt like they turned the whole roster iside down which they needed to do and then all of a sudden the last nine games they go five and four they upset the eagles and then they went to foxborough and just basically ended the season. I thought for the new New England Patriots playoff teams right. Okay so all the sudden Brian floor floor with the help of Chris greer. They're having big success. It looks like it's headed in the right drug us us but it wasn't enough of a splash to create momentum through the hiring process and right because John Wooden again texted me back with so many names he said we have so many in the pipeline. Who already started with Eric? B Enemy and Chris Rock. I think Chris Shaw Bad Year on defense but when I watch him interviewed when I watch his body language. It's a stunt man he's he's got. CEO Written all over him. He looks like a commanding officer to me. There's not enough black head coaches skip. Because because you look you look at Mike McCarthy guest job he hires the guy that gave him his opportunity coordinator fifteen years ago so you see the circle. We'll skip once you become a head coach. What do you do you go to the combine? You go to say elbow you got your drake. He goes to the coaches meeting and Yada Yada Yada and to connect with the boom boom boom right right. So if I'm not in that Lou. How do I get into loops? Because a rid of staff they said eighty percent of the jobs are never posted so in other worth people get hired somebody a friend or family member is not what you know who you know There in live the roof. It does house so to finish John. Bruton's list of pipeline candidates being AMEE. Chris Rashard Robert Sala. He threw Jim Caldwell on his list. Is Jim Colwell was highly successful zestful. Jim called wheel lost his jaw. Going nine and seven in two years Matt Patricia has nine total win and he's still got a job now he goldwell still doesn't have another job he in four years. He went to the playoffs twice in the last year he went nine and seven and they said well you know we need to move in a different direction. uh-huh and the guy that's replaced has yet to win nine total games in two years. Do you still own a still on the clock. Okay Steve wilks got one shot in time. I'm one year in Arizona and he was gone. He's now the defensive coordinator in Cleveland which probably didn't help his cause this year that much but I don't hear his name no in Cleveland right right on the list. And then there's Terrel Austin who's young stripes potential star coach and John Wootton into his list with Marvin Lewis who he thinks deserves a second shy right. Okay so Jerry. Jones did observe in qualified for the Rooney rule by bringing in. I Marvin Lewis. I think Jerry was shrewd operating waiting there. Because he didn't pick a young like like Chris Rashard type interview him because of Jerry had interviewed a young potential upcoming head. Black coach right. There's more pressure on Jerry. What was wrong with right? What's the problem exactly? He went to Marvin Lewis because he thinks Marvin Lewis is kind of old news right right. He got his longtime time shot in Cincinnati. Listen I still think Marvin did a good job job seriously. Yes okay he went. Oh and seven in the playoffs but still it was Andy Dalton Alton you re you with covering the NFL and you remember what Cincinnati before. Marlene got there was John. Carter number one overall. You Got David Cleland with the fourth. The fourth picket. You got big day to day and Wilkerson purse around the second pick in the draft year after year after a year people. Forget what I know. Marvin didn't win a playoff game. But they weren't even getting close to the playoffs for Marvin got there. No so I was disappointed in Jerry because you know my heart Hartz. I'd love to see Jerry Jones higher black head coach and I think I probably won't live long enough or Jerry will live long enough to know.

Who's to blame for the Chicago Bears' issues?

"We got a couple minutes to spend with a guy who knows his way around the national public as well as anyone I know we're gonna go Chicago's Pacific with them early in in touch on a bunch of league topics he knows the bears because easy NFL insider for the score in Chicago executive editor pro football weekly and does some time I work for Westwood One our buddy Hobart to shop to board with us here on CBS sports radio how are you how yeah you know yeah good to well not good because subject fan but you you you we do use it of course if we bear and your guys got to cover the bears and I'm sure there are nappy folks in Chicago as well their offense isn't is good is it supposed to be their defense isn't as good as opposed to being the counting isn't quite as good as it's supposed to be other than that how is the play Mrs Lincoln you point the biggest finger at well I mean it's a bit of a puzzle right now as you just said all three things and so forth and like as much special teams not as good as they're supposed to be there is no question that the talent on that football team is better than three in five minutes a lot closer to the team that you saw the last ninety minutes of the third period in the first five minutes of the fourth president was the rest of the game and yet they've been playing that way for the last four weeks and so at the end of the day it starts with the boss the head coach Matt Nagy the is the reigning NFL coach of the year you don't win those words and complete flukes you know he obviously did some things very well last year he is still relatively young as head coaches go but his area of expertise which is the offense is the biggest problem for the football team right now yeah and and probably I realized today cover in that game balls and equally big problem is the fact that you can be an offense of all he wants is the head coach of the football team yeah when you got last year was number three seed in the autopsy not showing up there what was a must win game and they clearly didn't show up in the first half the more problems than just you know the quarterback of the offenses scheme or whatever it may be and so I think a big part of the problem right now is the man that you need to stop and say okay I'm the head coach you're not the offensive coordinator will probably need to hand off his play calling duties used up by you guys on the staff who done it not capable of doing it and they need somebody running the football team twenty four seven and for sixty minutes outside intriguing way to look at it who are those guys who do you think is the top guy DD would potentially hand play calling duties often on one of his assistant coaches our senses Brad Childress who's been a head coach in the NFL is called plays in the NFL not he is not a devil okay if you will of the modern day west coast than Andy Reid talked to Doug Peterson and and met Nagy was all it was part of all that but he's more of a sure west coast guy he's not gonna be as adventuresome as neck you would be but but he has one and gone to championship games in the NFL as an offense of coach I think even a better prospect could very well be mark Helfrich course was the head coach in Oregon when they were threatening to win a national title with Marcus Mariota at quarterback he is a little more create a little more adventurous and he's a guy it definitely do it and really a guy who's been in training call numbers your spouse former movie objectives were gone who is his quarterback coach in who did get a little training during your exhibition season called place no last exhibition game to give him a taste of that so between those two guys even as it was just for a game or two so that he could focus on getting other things straightened out he's got plenty of play calling ability or at least

"Rather surprising note for the bears when the injury report came out and that is the kicker Eddie Pinheiro is questionable because of a knee injury suffered in the bears weight room a couple of days ago here's Matt Nagy ended up having it happen in the weight room but just thought that it was something that was minor and I think as a as the time has gone by in and going out there today just felt a little bit so we're just gonna you know pull back and see you see where it's at and be be optimistic and and try to do everything we can to to make sure that we're taking

"We'll check in with the down the road. Thanks very much for doing this. Thanks take care matt nagy head coach chicago bears over to you. I love that it just called out prince. That'll be interesting in practice today all right. Let's stay in the n._f._l. And in the n._f._c. we're going to play a little contender tender pretender. We've selected for and teams. You're gonna tell us if they have a path to winning the conference so let's start with his team. The bears are they contenders. Here's an pretenders. I would love to say that they're contenders but at this point they're pretenders and look at mitch trubisky. He was talking about the touchdown to check down mentality. I i need to see more from msci needs to be more consistent down the field for them to be able to have success. He's done a good job and then that defense was phenomenal turnovers. I don't know if they'll be able to repeat that same turnover it over ratio again and then lastly when you look at this thing one of them things that plagued him was their special teams last year. It cost them a playoff game. They're a great team but i still think in their the division they're going to be able to get to the championship just yet. It's an interesting division this year. Let's move onto the cowboys. We don't even know they'll have zeke but are they. A contender pretender. Stay there contender because jerry jones is gonna get these deals done. They're going to have zeke this season now. Afterwards what happens with what happens tomorrow that's going to be different but their defense is really good jalen smith bandrich. They're able to get it done. That's good enough. I think this team is a super bowl contending team and this one's interesting because there was a lot of hype last off season coming into to the season with jimmy garoppolo and the forty niners. Are you taking them as contenders and pretenders almost always pretenders right now you know they've added some guys on defensive at the ford right there from kansas city that added nick boats who's been hurt but i have to see more from jimmy garoppolo as well through five picks in practice the other day so he's gonna produce high level before i can put them. Everybody has a bad day. Okay bobbie just a really really bad day. Let's go to the vikings lot of hype again about this team but they were eight and seven last year. What do you think schwab go with the contender tender here. I had to choose them over chicago. I think this is going to be a much better season for kirk cousins. He's now second year in this offense with great receivers and feeling and digs the defense is always good cooks going to be able to run the ball the line it'll be more solidified this year after the untimely passing of their offensive line coach tony spot over there contenders for me in a big way all right not much more time before we actually know who's good or not tonight. We get a little preview. We have our first n._f._l. Preseason game tonight on e._s._p._n. Tyler murray and the cardinals was hosts. John gruden's raiders coverage kicked off the special edition of monday night. Countdown at seven eastern followed by the raiders in the cards at eight eastern on e._s._p._n..

"nagy" Discussed on The College Draft with Ross Tucker

"Here's part one well as promised extremely excited about today's guests a guy that I guess I kind of knew since my rookie year and two thousand one I think he might be the only person I was ever a member of Turgen ization with in the scouting part of it. At least it's kind of funny, we never really talked about it, and really ever only had a couple of conversations, but he is now the executive director of the senior bowl does a terrific job there. I mean, the senior bowl has just taken off and he didn't outstanding job this past year and was a scout for almost twenty years before that he is Jim Nagy, Jim, what's up man? Iran. Sorry about, hey, I gotta start with this because I go over this all over this all the time with matinee being from where I'm from in Pennsylvania. Nagy nagy. What are we going with? I go Nagy because it's easier you know, I'm not one of the I could go the other man. Really? Honestly, it whatever whatever's give you I'm fine. I'm not gonna I'm not gonna split hairs over it. I'm good. It's funny, because that's been like a major issue in Chicago, where half. The people say, Nagy half the people say Nagee, and I guess Matt told people it's actually like, hey, like Nagy. So it's actually even if it's even harder. It's in between. Well, if you go back to the motherland in Hungary, it's pronounced nudge. So, yeah, it's kind of obscure name here in the United States, but it's actually Smith. If you go over to Hungary, it's the most common surname over there. So. Yeah, we'll, we'll go, what whatever works raw down. All right. So I wanna start Jim we're gonna make this a two parter because I wanna to do a whole episode just on the senior bowl and what an event and business. That's become. But I, I wanted to kind of give people your background..

2019 NFL Draft prospects

"We're about three weeks from the NFL draft. It's been an interesting off season. If you were bears fan last season. It was interesting the bears gone out and done a lot of things this off-season than to talk about that and much much more. We bring in our guy NFL writer, Eric at home. Nice enough to jump on and Eric tonight. Everything's good. Yeah. It was just thinking these last three weeks for the drafter get a feel like any turn into here that always does every single year seems like it takes a long time here in Chicago. We've always been interested in the draft. Because usually the bears were bad a high draft pick. And now they were smart last year and traded pigs got gotta Khalil Mack. And now they've not picking until the third round unless they make a move. But I mean, I think it seems like all their other moves have been in you know, in free agency and bringing. Players in. So it's not nearly the draft excitement here in Chicago. Like, it was when just imagine if the draft was here, and it was no bears draft pick for you know, for the first day and a half down. Admit what difficult I think it would be legal to do that. The office. Like, let's about this. The bears probably will make their selection around nine o'clock. I think on Friday night. So you settle in. You know, maybe, you know, get some food get something to eat whatever it's going to be a while. I don't think they'll be moving up. They don't have a lot of picks. So yeah, it's gotta be patience is virtue for bears fans outside of kicker because kickers not real answer. When you talk about to what's the biggest need for the bears. Hang into the draft. It's a great question. You know, I think it probably, you know, I think what they did themselves. A lot of a good favor by refunding airless, you know, and just you know for a one year deal. Right. We know he's the third outside guy. But still it just eliminated one spot that you have to kinda reach four and not reach four. But you know, have to hope that somebody is at that position waiting for you in the draft. So it probably slimmed down to two maybe three or four positions. I would think running back has to be on that list. You know, I personally would like to see. Them. Get more death on the offense of line. And I think the secondary either corner or safety would be a spot they can look at and their few defensive action, the strap that I think could play, you know, cover the flight and also places safety. So there's some versatile guys in this great year for either position a corner safety, but it's deep enough where they could possibly get somebody there. So I would just, you know, spit balling kinda Dr throwing I would say those it's likely that they could be picking one of those three spots that eighty seven toys have you ever seen as I'm asking the question. I know we've all seen it. But have you? I was gonna ask you if you've seen the situation where teams running back like Jordan Howard performed relatively well and was light by many people. And but basically the head coach had no use form at this point. And that's why they ended up moving them. Yeah. I mean, obviously, totally different situation from what happened with Levy on bell. You know, those are the exceptions to the rule, but you know, it is one of those. Position where if you're not one of the elite top, you know, five or six guys in the league at your spot. You know, there's only so much teams willing to kind of sink into that dishing. I know that there have been back strapped in the top. You know, five ten picks several years, it's not gonna have this year. But it's happened. A lot in recent history or often more often than I would've expected. I know Todd Gurley got his big deal. I know other people have gotten pretty good money. That's dishing bell sign this off season. But there's a drop off, you know. And so I think if you're not special, you know, that maybe are deemed expendable depending on the system. And so you know, I can see both sides why they moved on. And I think they feel like with Mike Davis Torri Cohen, they add one more the draft. You know, maybe Ryan dollars trading Kampe preseason hero again or something like that. But you know, we'll see I think they will try to add at least one more. And then maybe an underrated free agent to add on top of that. Daryl. Patterson is. Is an interesting guy. But he's been an interesting guys come into the league. Other people have found out ways to use them and the patriots even lined him up in the backfield as a running back. Do you expect Matt Nagy to do that? Also, not only just swing passes and give them in and around and things like that. And also given the ball out of the running back position. Yeah. It's a great option. I think you know, the patriots really the first team to really unlocked at running ability. I mean like you said when he was in Oakland, you know, other places he was running those kind of gadget runs and things like that. But I mean, they line them up as a tailback and got buffalo game was it was crazy to watch. He had twenty something carries. And so, yeah, it was it was a strange thing to think about you know, a six to two hundred twenty pound receiver who could run like the wind lining up kind of power back. But he can do it. I think that really added to the appeal. He's the perfect Matt Nagy player. They'll run kick off, you know, he could be a wide receiver if you need to. I don't think he's more than. A number four. But still, you know, having that deeper out option is important. And I think that's you know, that kinda speed if Taylor Gabriel is out there, they may not have that exact replica that so it's different version of speed. And then as you said we saw last year that he can be running back, you know, in cut a break glass in case for -mergency situation. Seahawks quarterback. Russell Wilson wants a new deal. He gave the Seahawks April fifteenth as a deadline to get that deal done. Do you think he gets done in what type of deal? Do you think Russell Wilson who get from the Seahawks? So here's my hypothetical question here. Like what they let's say if April sixteenth by parents diversity, by the way. Let's. Let's say April sixteenth. They offer him. The richest TV deal of all time. You're gonna say oh sorry. The deadline. Hey, understand that this thing happened in January. We didn't really hear about it until very recently. But meeting his, you know, giving them a deadline, but you know, it just doesn't make a lot of stints. It's not a if something magical happens on that calendar day, not as some kind of contract, you know, bonus kicks in or anything else that would prevent them from getting this thing done, or if there's some kind of you know, league deadline or something like that. It's not July fifteenth and the franchise player, so it's just one of those kind of subtle threats from the from the Wilson camp saying, hey, don't forget about me, baby. You know, I still want to get my deal. I still want to get this thing done. You know, there's an opportunity for him to really cash in. And also kind of hold them hostage a little bit. I suspect it there's a good chance that gets done. But for months now there have been whispers that you know, maybe the Seahawks aren't quite prepared to pay him. What what a lot of people think he's worth it would at least entertain the idea of. What could we get you know, trade for him? Just theoretically, what would he get you know, is worth three first Thursay? We're still talking about a thirty thirty one year old guy. And there's still a handful of teams that really badly need that franchise different speaking quarterback. So I I don't know. I still think it's gonna get done 'cause that's city loves them. Even if a lot of past teammates were the biggest Russell Wilson fan. They know how much he means for the team another couple minutes with NFL writer, Eric at home and Erica week or so ago, rob gronkowski decided to retire. A lot of people on Twitter and everywhere else going, okay. The best tight end. Maybe you'll ever play the game has retired. Who's the best tight end in the NFL? Now who do you like? Yeah. I mean, that's a great question. To kinda depends what you want. So if you guys can do with grunk did which is being impact players blocker, and as receiver, you know. And and think about all the calls that were made against gronk over the years. He was kinda like the Cam Newton of the tight end position like say what that's not interference. Though, he just, you know, even with that work in Gascony was so special. I love the fact that Travis Kelsey can be as dangerous, you know, the last couple of years he's actually been a better receiver than gronk. No question about it. But he's not nearly the blocker that he is. You know, we see some of these young pass catching tight. I mean, George Kittle out in San Francisco at times has flashed like he could be the best to way tight in the league because he blocks his tail off. He's got great receiving chops. And really the only thing that's kind of held them back injuries. I don't necessarily think you can have a long career. So this might be one of those debate that we kinda have for years. I don't think there's any one guy that fills that checked off all the boxes like like gronk did. And he had injury issues too. But still when he was out there. There's really no doubt. And I don't know that that that one guy even though there are some great blockers. It's about staying receivers you rarely see both. Do you think that Jason Witten can still be productive? I don't know man this. I wanted to I know Jason Witten the player, it was outstanding. He was just so consistent day in and day. I knew what you're going to get from. He was probably, you know, he was unsexy version of gronk and that he could block and catch fast but a year off his age. I know they say they're going to come in just and all that. His feeling this thing could kind of turn south, and we could see 'cause he looked slow by the end when he was out there last time. He just wasn't the same guy. Eric, we appreciate jumping for few minutes. We'll hopefully those go to slow the next couple of weeks. We'll talk to you soon. All right. Enjoy the run up to the draft guys. Thanks. They got home jumping on talking NFL. Like Whitten wasn't good at the end. Then like fancy players, look like, wait. Hold on. Really? Like, what is she some Witten really gonna bring to the Cowboys? Here's a guy wanted to bring up to you. Because this is a guy that I thought when he got to the NFL was going to have a bigger impact than he's head and OJ Howard at the tight end. Okay. Because what we saw in college. We thought. Okay. The when this guy gets here Dowd using is just because the quarterback situation and the problems have had do you think he can still become a dominant tight end in this league? Maybe because he did it in college. And you assume that that body type in his speed is is ability to get down field. And you know, James Winstons been not very good. No. And I think a lot of people misread what Tampa Bay is doing. I don't think he's there for the long haul. I think Tampa Bay if they could find someone else to be their quarterback. They would go with that person. Yeah. So whether or not it's trying to find a quarterback in this year's draft. Or or or planning for the future? Elsewhere. But like I don't trust him as Winston do.

"Anywhere on the FOX ports at Ohio states, beaten, Michigan six straight times winner. This game wins the big ten east Michigan to win by a touchdown. It will be close. Jim Harbaugh has done. What I thought he would do which is take control of the big ten. I'll have thoughts on urban Meyer. There are some massive changes coming in college football for some of the biggest names, and we'll get to that next hour with Michael Vick. But now a decade and a half in the NFL Pro Bowl and a Super Bowl. His name is trend for the coward. Global satellite network. All right. Chicago's mad at me. Because I keep saying listen sometimes it is the coaching more than the players in. My eyes are telling me is that there's a lot of David Copperfield going on with Matt Nagy. I I mean, it is just MIR's allusion in what do you make on Chicago's offense? What do you make of it? It's good stuff. So I agree bills and whistles a lot of misdirection a lot of stuff do help. Mitch trubisky. Have success this stage of rare I'm mentioning talented yet. He's big strong as good arm. Accurate. Primary Seaver can extend plays. In fact, the line of scrimmage get yards. His athleticism moved the chains. What he's still remedial in his development as a quarterback. So Nagy a lot of pressure on himself and the other ten guys by moving them around and giving all these Frasier looks to help grace really haven't aged situations. Permits trubisky. I think it's the right way to coach young for back. You want? Quarterback to be a legend in his own mind. You think he's better than he really is the way you do that you get them cheap. Completions. Throw a lot of screens. You'll get your primary receiver open you create ways for him. So I don't think it's wrong to say the mischievous for product of Nagy system. But at the same time, it's gonna help speed up. Mitch rich mischievous he's learning curve. And and help them become a better player long-term. So Lamar Jackson. He's better than I thought he would be defeated kind of the same way. Like, I don't think he's sustainable that running. But I gotta tell you. It's got a little bit of a whip on him. He kind of moves around. The ravens did a nice job with with his game plan. Fantastic job. I mean to me, it's the it's the best backup or back that way you can have when you're stars hurt. And you can roll out a guy that you can put a whole new often out there for puts tremendous pressure on the defense hard to prepare for a lot of big plays in the running game is a sustainable. Heck, no. Running quarterback and times game in the NFL. Is this sustainable, let alone twenty seven. I watched every snap for that game. And I had anxiety watching. Toby for network. I mean, listen, he's Amar's. We're number eight better. I work. I am rooting hard..

"Playoffs. Only sixty point nine percent compared to the bears that that is phenomenal. Wow. Vikings making the playoffs. Do you think it has? This was the team. Everyone said they're locked to win the division. I mean if the Packers are sixty percent, I'm going to put the Vikings at forty percent. Twenty four percent that they make the playoffs. I think at this percentage guessing game. Holy smokes. Lanta seventeen percents Detroit. Seven point six percent teams are lasting their divisions. I mean, if you're wanted three bet statistically, you're not making the playoffs. I wonder how many one three teams have ever made the playoffs talk too. So let's take it one step further calf look at the Super Bowl odds where do the book bears rank amongst all the NFL in odds to win the Super Bowl right now. Not sure tell me. Okay. So the Rams are number one thirty point eight percent. The chiefs are number two at ten point four percent. The Baltimore Ravens are third at seven point three percent. And the Chicago Bears are fourth at six point seven percent. Now, if we match that with said the odds that we're getting in Vegas. Might be smart. The throw down a couple dollars on money one hundred to one eighty to one. What are they right now? Currently I've gotta look I'll pull that up next break. I'll pull that up. Get to what the line is out in Vegas anyway. Three one two three three two three seven six the phone number. So I spent the afternoon Halla saw yesterday got an exclusive sit down with Matt Nagy. And by the way, it is negative any G G Y. But he said, you know, I'll answer key Nagy, whatever he's not that guy. But the correct pronunciation from where he grew up in Pennsylvania people call him Matt.

"Yeah i think that's that's that's about it so be it is bad actually system and helfferich was was joking again today he was in a good mood how his fingerprints are like a little bit on the cover of the offense the playbook maybe on the back for like the meat of it this is matt nagy this is the kansas city offense with whatever tweaks he's gonna throw in there so i mean it seems like they have a pretty good working relationship and he's involved but as far as like executing the plays drawing up plays that's gonna be the head coach but i i certainly seems like he talks through bisky about this sylvie that he really appreciates the better coaching he has this year you know they kept regarding which was nice they keep the quarterbacks coach helfferich is a former you know head coach oregon he definitely knows offense and of course nagy's you know background is off and so they have they have much better coaches and then keeping regard i think around trubisky and you certainly get the feeling that he definitely likes that whenever you thought them publicly what are your early impressions of nagy like you're a guy who's very observant jd and you've dealt with a lot of coaches and ultimately none of this will matter i it will be about wins and losses and you deal within season adversity we know this but does it seem like this is a guy who's well put together and understands what he's doing in his first head coaching job.

"And yeah right yeah matt nagy had his first opportunity to get his football team out there on the field today as he was looking at them was day one of the veteran voluntary they call it the voluntary of veterans mini camp that day one of it and he was he was impressed by his offense mitch and and and coach were gone coach helfferich and as quarterbacks a ton of credit i just got done talking to mitch just a little bit ago pulled him to the side and just told them really how amazed i was how he got through this first day he was he was impressive and i i don't wanna put too much too much on them but at the same time he needs to understand it that was that was pretty good which is having not just mitch but the rest of the offense and i'm talking about the offense because we've never been together so we weren't sure how it was going to be just getting in the huddle walking up to the line of scrimmage saying ready set go and the guys all around the centers the lyman the running backs lining up very few mistakes and so that goes back to them in the meetings of understand the details when when i'm up here and i'm installing the plays these guys the there is not even necessarily all the notes they take it just i can see them connecting with them and they're connecting with me and as long as you have that now they need to be able to talk to me and tell me where they're learning so mitch and the rest of the guys and and these coaches teaching them have done.
