Blake From Chicago Has a Burning Question for Eric

"The first question is complicated. So I'm going to read this one. Somebody writes the rest of them you can read me the questions and I'll answer it. But I'm going to read this question. This one says dear Eric, this is Blake from Chicago. He says dear Eric agonizing dilemma. I hate to bother you bro because you are very important and very busy and you dwell in the unscalable staggering heights of highest dignity, honor and wisdom. I'm going to say true. But it's not a true or false question. He goes on. He says, but I got this itching dilemma. You might want to try to outcome powder. Usually that's the first place I'd go. He says I have an itching dilemma 7 11 has a deal where you get a delicious rotisserie hot dog with all the trimmings, chips and a big gulp for 6.99 or you can have a chili dog cheesy nachos and a super sized slurpee for just 7 59. Which one should I choose? Which one would bond hoffer have chosen? What about Martin Luther, Augustine, thanks. And you know, I just want to say, this kind of, I guess, you know, deep philosophical question. I just want to say, kudos to you, Blake from Chicago. Because a lot of people are unwilling to take on tough questions like this. Which one would bond hoffer have chosen, I think we can say without any question he would have gone for the chili dog and the supersize slurpee. I wrote a big book on bahn hoffer. I think I know what I'm talking about. I'm just going to leave it

What about having some some personalized nachos not personalized but like individual chips. That have been topped the in a sufficient way. They're all put out on a rack and somebody goes along like an assembly line puts the proper amount of each ingredient on them. Tom you dumb fuck. I was going to bring this up. "Try to describe it at all. You put some some cheese. I'd recommend monterey jack pepper. Jack cheddar Probably not any velveeta. I'm not a huge fan of man. Get it is fine. I like just other things. Some chopped white onions there. Okay and then when then you do another layer of that or another two layers of all of that Like cannabis as the whole thing. And then you you cook in. The onions cooked down a little bit. Yeah nice. they're not like raw in like when you have running on something and you you bite into kind of like that. That's a little too much alike on a hot dog or something but if if you heated up with the hot ingredients i think i think you're and to be clear. I like ron jons on some things but it but it does overpower other flavors. This list i saw they also had garlic. Which which i think a long eurolines if you like kind of spread it out yeah put it in the guacamole. What i absolutely put it in the refried beans. You know you. there's plenty of dr do within. yeah Tomatoes diced tomatoes. Yeah i mean same thing as pico needles. Okay yeah as like a nice little flourish may be but i wanna get them wet and then this. I hope you'll you'll agree with me. Splice also suggested ranch dressing. Are you anti ranch years. My position on ranch ranch dressing is for putting on things that you wouldn't want to eat otherwise but if something's already good don't put ranch dressing on it it's unnecessary. I mean it serves the same purpose like ranch and sour cream would be yes silly proposition. But i'm saying like i like using ran. I like chips with french. I mean i guess. Chips are good without hedge. But like one of my. I don't do this usually but Times where i've had pizza crust that i could dip in ranch. Nice pizzas your favorite food. But you don't eat the crust. No i will eat the crust. I mean there's been times at least when we were roommates. Yeah you would not well. I've grown up a lot since phantom But if there's like some ranch now that you're over the hill if there's some ranch dressing to dip that cross in. Yeah yeah that. Chris crust up some. Yeah oh the. I mean there there you go. There's another point ranch. Dressing is all wet. You're adding too much wetness And we classifies loaded nachos. If you see that on a menu. I think that is a good sign. that it's not just going to be the sad. It's not gonna be bullshit it's not gonna be either melt a little bit a gross cheese congealed or some some cheese sauce. The the guacamole sauce. And yeah you know like biz dislike. Oh we're going to. We're going to throw in the kitchen sink here you might ir. It's on it all really given to like an authentic mexican restaurant Place near me Does a real good like anytime you get like anything vegetarian. There's some there's there's there's some carrots in it. I've never worked surprisingly well. Yeah carrots on nachos not as rare as you would think. I've never seen it so i think it's pretty rare. Yeah notches hey what can i do. Well i wanna eat nachos. I was gonna say i feel like what loaded nachos menu communicates to me is. You're gonna get more toppings than ships here..

"I'm doing the doesn't mean it. Makes the whole endeavour Healthy i li- i like broccoli. Yeah careone also. How do you feel about nachos on making like irish nachos fries or tots with all the stuff. I think that's nice to to wet too soggy. Well you gotta eat it with a if you have to eat it with a four clone saying ones that you don't have to. I mean everybody can do those different too. You can have some real nice crispy fries or crispy tater donnie. If they're the waffle fries. Yeah oh yeah. That's nice right that but also it's like you know at the. You're substituting one of the two ingredients that defines nacho like that's a different that's tooth fries that's dangerously. That's treading dangerously close to those kfc bulls where it's like. Yeah we put everything on top of mashed potato survey where it's just like that's gross. Yeah yeah you don't want anything to potato e the chips serve as a as a means of getting cheese into your mouth I finally oh. I think you skipped then. I'll say my. I just want to talk about the the cheese. I didn't want to dwell on you. Were done talking about toppings. Yeah let's see let's hear some things Well here's one of my favorite some nice Scallions ninety that was number. The i skipped over that it's number four. I'm gonna have to lie about things. I love tom. csa this week. I got scallions. That were this log. Tim scallions from csi and then My girlfriend would put them in water afterwards. Too many scions. We know what to do with them. And kill me to ask my wife to stop putting the scalia in the water in the in the window. It's free food though it just no. Well then we're going to have to either. We're going to do that or we're gonna cancel our cspan membership because like too many scallions at home. It's a good problem now. I'm with you one hundred percent. I think scallions again. I have cheese sour cream. Pika scallions is number four. Which also is why i think salon tro like get outta here. You got a nice screen. You know The type thing on there seats. It's it's very different. But i get it. You know. want to pretend that tastes. Like whatever i saw on on the thing i was looking at They suggested they had onions. As as a potential topping do green onions you want something light. You want or light ingredients. That are going to load things out. I love onions. We've gone on the record. We're both onion boys pro onion but you know like chopped onions on there again. I think it adds to the wetness. You know you know what. I would recommend doing what here. Here's my all right. You get a cast iron pan Put a layer of chips You put some refried beans..

Yeah and then they all yeah and they come with like congealed or just cheese sauce. Nacho cheese sauce mhm and like a Like a to smooth guacamole and they're like here's your laws guacamole out of a tube. Yeah yeah in those cases it's like just don't put guacamole at all. And now you're telling me you like not to us more. The pizza is why don't why into business with you. A fair point. That's a fair point. But i don't wanna be i'm not i don't want to go into business if you're going to constantly be testing me with these tricks it's a look if if you consider that a top trick the pass than it. Will you have no idea the kinds of tricks. I would poll while rang a business to test you tom. There is no time to waste. I am tony about flying in these italian guys every night and i'm taking control because things could easily go off the rails here. There are a lot of directions we can go here nachos exactly so we're going to keep to a format if you veer off then back. You're driving the good ship. Ss nachos yeah on a on a sea of melted cheese so it's not chose also in melted cheese. Yeah i mean the. The ship is made of the chips but then they have cheese on them as well. They're going through the walls and they're not not just him there just chips. Yeah it's just the name of the dan. Guess what. I that was another test and other trick gives. If you're gonna tell me that they were not chosen. They had cheese on them. I would say well. That's equivalent Boat taking on water and it sounds like that the good the good ship. Ss s nachos. Sinking tom a boat. The out the exterior of a boat is wet all the time. But but you don't have just not every inch of the of the ship is covered with nacho jill. You put it on top you. Don't you know if you went to a restaurant here. I have some nachos and they give you a bowl of cheese with a bunch of chips. They dropped into the middle. He bag no that cheese nachos tom. It's a metaphor. i that's what i was telling you. That's a metaphor. And if there's nacho cheese on that ships its equivalent of a ship taking on water. What are i keep saying. "I hear that the energy at your rallies of course. I spoke at one of them but You've got really big rallies. The energy is analogous to a trump energy. I think that's right Dentist i have been overwhelmed by the enthusiasm. Men coming up to me crying saying thank you for saving california. Thank you for doing something about the crime. Thank you for doing something about the rise of homelessness. Thank you for doing something about the way this man shut down the state to the point. Dennis where a third of all small businesses are now gone forever. Many of which were only by black and brown. Asian american people. I only mentioned their race because people like avenue some themselves on caring about people like that And then i hear from women. Were telling me finally. I'm going to be able to have a choice. I can take my kid out of an underperforming government school And put him into a private school or charter. School or private school or home schooling. This is the kind of stuff that i'm hearing. And if i'd never ever imagined that it would be this kind of reception to my entering this race. I know. I know you didn't glow could you. You're just you're not an arrogant man to begin with so i. I have no doubt that this is taken by surprise and well-deserved by the way the smear campaign against you. Which is something i am used to reading about about anybody who was ineffective conservative. I'll give an example aside from the black face of white supremacy which should have rendered the author fired by the los angeles times but An example. I think i don't know if it was the new york times or or or wherever that you don't believe there is racism in america. Yeah well of course i. I've never said anything. Of course is is what. I've challenged that business about whether they're systemic racist The idea that the police are pulling people over in using voice against white people just because they're black that's been re the study. It's nonsense is what the left does to divide america to scare black people because they convinced a large number of black people. Dennis of that social justice is the primary issue in america. Not quality of schools not crime. Not where the nacho able to get a job and so they do this because they want to try and get that monolithic lactoferrin which they cannot survive at the presidential level.

"Lindsay. Did you see that. In of julian hubs fresh. Fine wine announced their partnership with the la chargers. I did back. Somebody kindly tweeted it at us knowing that. That was our kind of news. Can you think of something that goes together. Better than the la chargers and line apart from nina dobrev and julian soccer there football Because nina said in a press statement as a lifetime football fan. I couldn't be more excited to be joining forces. But the la chargers fresh fine wine promises to bring a premium luxury wine experience to the fans who love indulging in the greatest things that life has to offer while being conscious consumers with active lifestyle. Choice chargers really would not be soccer. That makes literally no sense that they would charge. Does it make more sense with football. Selling your like healthy. Fresh wine in a football stadium does not add to like the mission statement of it like stop it. Stop it. Stop getting nachos and cheese. That never gets hard. Who Killed Yvonne Layne?

"April first. One thousand nine hundred nine twenty. Six year old of on lane was found with her throat. Slashed dead in her home in alliance. Ohio twenty six year old. Yvonne lane a beautiful vivacious woman rebound in a pool of her own blood. Her throat slashed. While her children's slap she was discovered by her mother who had arrived to take her six year old grandchild to kindergarten of was a mother to five kids. David thorne was the father of one of the children although he and a von. We're not together anymore. The murder of a mother of five in her own home stunt the small town of alliance ohio. David had recently been ordered to pay child support and in his confession. Joe said that he was hired by david thorne to kill von so we didn't have to pay the father of one of the children. The motive child support thorne was ordered to pay to the untrained listener. This seems like a pretty clear cut case someone confessing in a good motive but when you start digging and talking to people and going through documents the more complicated things get and it seems like everyone around. A yvonne had a motive to kill her. I i came across the case on the website injustice anywhere which has since become a staple for my research into lesser known conviction cases for my other podcast unjust unsolved. I covered an episode a week telling the stories of people who believed were wrongfully convicted. David was one of them. One of the incredible things to me about. David's case is that it actually unknown there had been other media coverage before the attack grabbed headlines as police hunt for a killer. Dwayne poelman who you just heard in. The previous clips is an investigative journalist. Who looked into the case for three years and at the center of his investigation. Very serious question. Did the system convict the wrong man. However that was over a decade ago. And there's been no movement since i said in david's episode of unjust unsolved that this case deserves its own long-form investigation nachos twenty minutes or forty minutes. So here we are.

Atlanta Hawks-New York Knicks Series Preview

"Let's get to the four or five nacho. This one is interior. Going to be a lot more entertaining. Probably the one. Eight matchup gets underway. Knicks hawks sunday at seven pm eastern on live from madison square garden. The best place you could ever go to watch a basketball game. The knicks swept the season series. A couple of those games. You know nate. Mcmillan wasn't even the coach so they were earlier in the year but keys to the series before we get to our predictions for nick's hawks. Trade started on this one. Well i think. Julius randle has an opportunity and a strong chance at being the best player in this series. He was incredible against the hawks. During the year in three games he was over thirty points per game to forty point games. He had a game winning tip as well. Clearly i'm tap dancing right now. I'm trying to pull up these splits here. You know you mess around with your tabs so much during a show it just throws the was saying julius randle thirty seven points per game. Twelve rebounds six assists. He had the game winning tip as well. He dominated the hawks this season. There's no doubt about it. They just don't have a great matchup for him though. We'll talk about some things. They're gonna do a little bit later on. I'm sure but i do think randall is going to produce at the very least the question will be. Where do the knicks. Then get all of their other points. They've had some great shooting this season. They got five guys shooting better than forty percent i think. Derrick rose has a chance to have a really good series here but skeets. I was listening to your podcast with l g do set on the. I meant you were talking about guys. Who have tyler hero. Potential somebody to explode in the playoffs who also has a cool factor. Let me offer you. Rj barrett my pick for this season's tyler hero forty percent from three during the season. Hit some big shots late. He was at forty seven from three point line for the last two months of the season. He really heated up. the shot. seems real. And i don't know he seems like a bit of a cool customer after getting called out by anthony edwards gimme rj barrett to be the secondary star for the knicks in this series. Because they've got to figure out a way to get to basically one hundred points

The Future of Fashion Education

"So we're starting off our in the no conversation all around fashion degrees. So i think there's been a lot of who can. I say who has around fashion. Getting fashion degree is a necessity. And i think it's also personal preference but if you look at what code. Savage has done in terms of the creative arts. I know they didn't get much funding but everything everybody has done. In lockdown has revolved around creativity. Were watching tv. Or those people have art directors producers costume reading books time without all they signed. No we do then. I mean if i couldn't buy clothes. You lockdown do spend my time to stern scrolling fade by by think he's radiating polston. I mean even if two children important as for their development ought arts and crafts build curiosity creativity imagination. It's supports their development and communication scales. Like it really is so important in terms of a person's development. And and i just feel like i guess. In the olden days going back thirty four years is not particularly old. But maybe it wasn't so much of a need to go into fashion occasion. There was more opportunity the fashion. She wasn't as big but now it is so so competitive and for my experience being university you know doing the fashion retail management course. I went to university. I wasn't tidy. Sure what i wanted to do. I just knew. I wanted to work in fashion and i didn't want to be a designer. I remember speaking to a careers advisor and she said to me you call eighteen gatiss taste or so you know walk gonna go. I'm going to get i god. He did y'all And i went to a degree. She wouldn't let or she was apprehensive about leading members of not her family because her family is not in the picture Her husband blake his family. She's like i don't want anyone holding our daughter and set for you and i Which is weird. Because it's the only family that was involved. Was his family jazz. Kind of like an island unto herself. It's very odd when she was in her forties. So pretty you know. How to Increase Sales 20% Using Predictive Analytics with John Wall

"Right. Everyone welcome to digital conversations. I'm your host billy bateman and today i am joined by podcasting legend john wall partner at trust insights and co host of marketing over copy. John thanks for joining me. Thanks for having me here billy. I appreciate it yeah. I'm really excited for this man so Before we get into it we're going to talk a lot about predictive analytics attribution the your data cleanliness within marketing. But before we get into that. Let's learn a little bit about you and what you do so tell us about yourself and a little bit about your journey. Yes sure so. I'm a partner at trust insights a marketing analytics firm. We we light up dark data which is our kind of data detectives. We help people figure out what's working in their marketing. What's not working where to go next. But my career path has been kind of crazy. I mean as far as marketing tech. i've been in the startup world since about ninety seven and have gone through. This is like my seventh startup. and we're actually three years in. I mean we're well beyond startup phase. But i've kind of cycled through a number of times and then before that. My background is actually economics. I graduated with a degree in econ. So i've always come at the marketing thing from the you know the quantitative analysis side and tried to automate as much as possible. So yeah it's been a long crazy path and a bunch of while pitstops along the way but everything with trust insights is going well and then the most of what we do at trust insights originally started when i was working with christopher penn. We started this podcast marketing over coffee about going on like fifteen years now. But we've you know every week talk about marketing and tech and that has just kind of finally gotten to a point where it's brings in clients for us for trust insights. We have a reputation as knowing about keeping an eye on what's going on in what's changing because the space is so crazy and dynamic and That has helped us build a community that were able to kind of trade ideas within could talk about. What's going on with martin and it's works. Well awesome awesome. Okay so you guys do a lot of work with predictive analytics and nice buzzword. I don't think a lot of people really know like what does that. What does that amount to in the real world. So i think what was just start there so when you guys were talking about predictive analytics what are you looking at. And what can you help. People forecast yeah. The most common thing that we did for. Predictive is topic analysis. You know we'll go take a look at grab a library of terms. Our chief data scientist christopher. Penn will run that against a number of models that he has and so the most common example that we use. We have a blog post. We update every year called the cheese report where we look at all the cheeses in the market and we come up with a calendar for the next twelve months. That says okay. These are when specific cheeses are going to be hot and moving and so if somebody who's creating content for website if you're in the cheese industry you know you know that come may and june. You'd better be teeing up all your content and videos about halloo me and i didn't even know who he was a thing until i read the cheese report and as we dug in. It's a grilled cheese so it always peaks in the summers when people are looking for louis. Recipes are wanna buy hulu me. It's because they're getting ready to throw it on the grill in july and so and then you know as you keep digging into the data you'll see mozzarella's on fire around christmas time Cheddar right around new year's as everybody's doing parties Monterey jack comes in around the super bowl when people making nachos and so the idea is that by looking at all this data and looking ahead you can't predict the future and say hey we want to drop our content on these weeks because we know there's going to be demand the week following that and you know we will have had content in place for a couple of weeks before the surge. It's you know these models can be applied to anything. I mean if you have enough sales data you can look and say you know get an idea for maybe what your seasonal sales cycle will be but we often find in. Beat a be that. There's just not enough data to really get effective models going But you know as far as applying that same model to other stuff. Women's shoes we have a client that uses the women's shoes fashion reports. So they know you know six to three months out from black friday. What's going to be hot and specific kinds of shoes and and where to go. It's and it's gotten a little bit rough You know it used to be rock-solid we kinda generate models and they would just always be you know ninety five percent greater confidence interval. You know we would just know that pretty much certain covert has kinda thrown a wrench in things. There's there's been a massive change in search behavior and so a lot of markets have been messed up so it's not as easy as it used to be. We used to kind of be able to say yeah. We can definitely do that for everything. And now a lot of projects. We'd say low will look will go in there and will run some models and we'll get back to if we think we can do some predictive because it's a lot more difficult than it used to be. Yes so with covid would what are you. Seeing is the changes and just consumer behavior since Yeah in one way. It's not radically different. Really what people have been saying. Some of the state we've seen is that it's it's as if we just jumped five years ahead you know we've kind of been on this ramp of ecommerce going in this direction and eating up one more brick and mortar and suddenly as if we just jumped ahead five years into the future because everybody now is forced to go online for purchases where there's this group of people who still like to go to you know the local big to buy stuff and now they have no choice because of the toilet paper gone or they don't want to go outside their risk or whatever so that's one thing

"Back to say what needs sank. Zach now brandon and today. We are here with ben and jason from the threads. Podcast life unfiltered ben jason. Thanks for joining us guys. Thanks for the opportunity us. Thank you so much. This is kind of weird for us because usually wearing your seat and we're in viewing the guests we just got done with the podcast legit. I'm gonna tell you right now. Legit i cried because the lady prayed for us. We're we're christians and churches been shitty right now because of covid and i don't know it was amazing like literally five minutes ago ben in our bolts gearing up or like holy shit. We got a report on somebody. Else's i know and ben ben has ever been on anyone else's podcasts. Have you yes. Oh you have who eric sane. I'll that one doesn't count. He was he we were. We were on his show as paid sponsor through. That's right but anyways i've been on a few shows But never been in is duo. So i'm excited for this here. For the dynamic duo experience yes you got it so so yeah we. We've been recently. We've been bringing on some podcasters to to talk about issues that are important to them to say what needs saying to talk about the things that are often ignored in not talked about. So we we want to bring this platform to people where people feel comfortable talking about whatever it is that they need to say and not feel afraid of being condemned for their thoughts or their views or what they are deciding to talk about. You know things like that and so we get into some of these sensitive subjects and source objects. That people don't like talking about so. I want you guys to kind of bring us into speed immigrants. So what we're going to be focusing on. Today's men suck taking care of their mental health. A let it slide. And they look after their families if they're married or they look after their significant others or whatever the case may be men for whatever reason by nature are horrible when it comes to taking care of their mental health. And what do i mean by mental health. I would say the thoughts that go on in their head about who they are what their role is in the world That they may be carrying around with them. Perhaps there's even some depression all these things. Doubts fears anxieties tuition. We live in a world. That's that men are just supposed to suck it up and show up and make it happen and never deal with that stuff. And i'm fed up about it. You know yeah. I completely agree. I mean there's so many times where these the my community. I hear a lot of people say you know. Just people like people express their you know their perspective as means now and i saw one. That says a personal say. I'm good until they're in a dark place a depression. But are you are you okay. I'm good no matter what it is you know. You said you're not supposed to be crying. Your man are you out of your mind. What type of hostile. What level of hostility mrs harbor. Or you know what level of detriment comes from harboring this level of emotional expressionist being. What's your jason. Yeah i mean. I have to. You know i saw brandon. Real quick and brandon is black. And so i know in the black community. Mental health is worse in the community. So that being said. I'm kind of flip the question on you. Have you experienced that a little bit member. We're we're fellow podcast sir. So we're gonna flip it and you experienced that kind in. Do you feel like it's like that and in the black community. I'll give you this. I recently because this valentine's day coming up this sunday. yup. I saw post that Why are men now. This is from the communities from other african americans or other black they said why are men nachos yvonne times day is for women and i quote that this gay that is specifically for women and that term alienates any feminine or even you know quote unquote especially your insider liking hours of wanting chocolate or one. You can care for wanting a gift on the day. They express his love for a couple chastised to have this. Like you know. I'm about to get a gift for the first time from ivonne signs. They should i not. Should you take more money in the flowers back. There's always the joke to the serious side of really such a pivotal point because it affects. How people even correlate love and responsibility to their kids and to their why into their spouse and men not even being emotionally available for me to be you know. Do they even get so point of marriage or are they even able to sustain a real relationship with their kids so you can follow us really. Show love to the show. A love should look like you know what i mean. I think. I think they can show love to their daughters. They struggled showing love to their son's. Yes just because all. You're a man your boy. You're not so sure. Show those feelings going back to the gift of valentine's i mean yeah. Do i want flowers for my wife. I wouldn't be like oh this. Is you know you had said like. Oh this is gay which is bad to say anyways. But i wouldn't say that. I wouldn't be like oh that's weird but it wouldn't be like uncomfortable for me.

"The with kevin mason. We face the same problem on thanksgiving and instead of having traditional turkey dinner just for two. We went with lasagna. So this year. What are we doing for christmas. I'll be honest with you. I don't know if there is a traditional christmas dinner per se. I mean turkey is usually associated with thanksgiving. Sometimes they for people but mainly. It's turkey and on christmas. You can do ham and you can do roast beef and i think my sister-in-law this year is doing prime rib if i'm not mistaken but is there one meal. That's the one traditional meal you're supposed to serve. I've always been frustrated because most people serve kind of the same thing on thanksgiving as they do on christmas. If you turkey on thanksgiving you don't necessarily have to do turkey on christmas. Some people do turkey on thanksgiving and pam on christmas. But then don't you do him on easter to. It's always confused me this year. Of course it's just the two of us. So what are we doing. Well of course the traditional nachos. I don't know why took my wife. And i about a week and a half to figure out what we're going to have for christmas dinner. We didn't have an answer. So the first thing i can think of low of course nachos makes no sense at all but i'm looking forward to it.

Food Justice

"I i would love to hear you talk about you know. Five years ago or for this work was really such a central part of your life. One days weeks look like and was it sort of a slow transition to being so daily weekly constantly active in food justice or or was there a moment where things really changed overnight. I five years ago. I really started to shift working in compliance and like research basically wanting to be more involved in community health in public health stuff. And i started to get more involved than nonprofits. Who do a lot of culturally relevant to the food workshops around la understand food in different ways and the just kind of got super curious going to like health conferences and the progression was slow. But i knew. I was hunting for it. I'm like there's gotta be some way for me to plug in with a skill. Set that i have to make an impact when i met outreach groups doing this That completely shifted. That's that's when i was like okay. This is where i wanna be. I scaled down my interest and kind of try and understand academics of health in really really doing more groundwork and two thousand seventeen start to literally make burqas britos and my kitchen and going out on saturday morning with with with the crew and like handing them out. And that's when really like. I started to turn because i start to see in person what was happening scarborough nachos in food but like public health wise just so many things just kind of colliding and it it matter that i saw it in person in matter that i had a team of people to bounce ideas off of so that we could figure out different ways to build support making homemade meals for folks Grow that was beautiful. I was doing that for like months. But i felt i started to feel like there was something else that was walking. I love what we were doing. But i felt like this isn't enough like i'm happy to be going out there and and giving hot meal i love to make for folks making them feel like loving care for but there's gotta be another piece that we can do because i was like this isn't enough. Something's data change without this people out there trying to figure out the policy and everything else attached so why the city has failed our house neighbors for people who are listening to this far from la or who are kind of far from this work. Maybe you can talk a little bit about services not sweeps and explain what is services not sweeps at this point where coalition of about forty plus different organizations became together about two years ago basically creating demand for the city to provide different services for an house neighbors and basically just not use criminalization and sweeps to take care of our homeless problem in los angeles so sweeps meaning like literally clearing away places where people have been living correct. Yes yes in the beginning. It really was us just as a coalition of different organizations in los angeles coming together. It's like based on the expertise of of different folks within the coalition that we came up with a list of demands because homelessness not going to go away anytime soon and we just wanna make it easier also better for our neighbors to be able to survive we figure out the housing solution for it and all that owes a model created to ed really led by an housed leaders within our coalition has a lot of our work is also informed by them very much that includes my work fisher and food. And we're still continuing right now. Where a lot of work is sometimes. We'll be attached to efforts in from from vietnam or from from different folks it's evolved so much especially under The i personally feel. The city has become more harsh neighbors in. That's been like a nightmare to try to. Fight has also been very vocal of politicians. Not putting their names were few district bution because almost like virtuous person but like no you like are pushing for sweeps almost like violent acts against humidity. But then you're gonna tell me that you're you know you're trying to see them on one hand and then you're you know you're not caring In the other. And so it's almost like feels like such a patchwork way for politicians to make themselves look better and i mean none of that right. Who can say not like. You're not doing good thing for giving someone like a hot meal. You know about groceries but i feel like historically politicians especially in local government used that too so that they don't do their job.

I know that a lot of our listeners are going to get a lot from you today. A lot of things going on especially in the last six months i mean. You've you've graduated with your masters degree. You started a new job. You got engaged. Congratulations thank you. Thank you and you actually have your first blog post on psychology today so a lot of exciting things in the last six months It's been an exciting time. So let's go ahead and get right into it. I kinda wanted to open up the floor for you and ask you. Tell me a little bit more about yourself. Other than what that introduction. You know what i did with the introduction for all of our audience members yes so i mean you covered it pretty well introduction. But i'm from new jersey born and raised. I'm currently still living. Where i grew up in marseilles town Just getting into the field of social work and starting my career in my free time. I have a adorable little rescue dog that keeps me busy and keeps me on my toes. So yeah i mean. I just happy to be here talking about my experience and my rite aid and My my career at this point. We'll good good i. How did you actually decide to get your bachelor of arts and psychology and criminology. What made you decide to go that route so it's actually a funny story. I started college as a pre med neuroscience major and then i realized that there was a lot of science and math involved in that that i was not interested in so i but i still really had a passion for mental health in the brain and all that stuff so the next logical step seemed to go into seem to be to go into psychology so i switched my major psychology and began taking some courses and saw that there was an overlap between mental health and the criminal justice system and some of those common themes among the two fields and so i added a criminology degree as well and of combine the two and got to see some of the overlap and it was an incredible combination of studies and field work and just a really good overall experience. Based on our research on the website we are seeing more of the that overlap with criminology and psychology or and more of those Psychologists are needed in the criminal justice system as well. So it's interesting that you chose that route You know the next follow up. Question is what is you know. At what point did you come up with the idea of becoming a therapist. Yeah so that is something that didn't stand out to me at first. I wasn't really sure what i want to do. With my psychology and criminology degree. I considered going into the fbi. Some sort of police criminal justice work and then ultimately subtle settled. It's not the right word. But i made the decision to be therapist and go into clinical work based on my own experience in therapy. And i think we're gonna get into that a little bit later but my own experience in therapy and my good dot experiences with different therapists really motivated me to want to get back. Beat up person for someone else. Because i've had very good therapist and are not so great therapists over the years. Not just kind of comes with the territory but it really motivated me to want to continue studying psychology understanding it understanding people and being a person for others to connect with the actually interesting that you brought that up. If you don't mind i'm gonna go ahead and share my screen. And i'm going to share one thing with you and the audience and i liked your tagline here and you should see the psychology today website here in. Here's your most recent blog post. Why showing emotion as a therapist is okay sometimes and if you notice on the left side. Your tag is gabrielle. Ferrera therapist who sees therapist. Tell us a little bit more about that and how you came up with that idea. Yeah so. I actually got that idea from a book. I read earlier this year. I think i've been late last year. Actually and it was a book by lori gottlieb. she's a psychotherapist and author and also as speaker and she has a memoir called. Maybe you should talk to someone. And in that memoir she about her own experience as a therapist and also her time that she spent going to therapy and that book really resonated with me and it was the first time that i had connected so deeply with a therapist who also goes to therapy themselves. And i knew that a lot of therapists go to therapy. And it's something that were encouraged to do in grad school but reading. That book really made me feel like it was something normal and it was something nachos normal but an asset it was a strength to be in therapy myself and also be on the other side being in that helping possession.

A Conversation on Nigeria's uprising

"A video of a man apparently being killed by police goes viral. Protests breakout grow, and spread even internationally. Calls for police reform get better and louder. The police react violently protesters are killed. Off It's too familiar story and this time it's happening across. Nigeria. The focus of the protesters fury, it's a group called the specialist Anti Robbery, squad, or SARS secretive outfit with a long-running reputation for brutality. Stop Stop. Stop killing. It seems clear that Nigeria's people have had enough. President Muhammadu Buhari has already made concessions, but the protest mood hints discontent that stretches far beyond police reform. These have been completely widespread protests taking place in most of the major cities, not least in Lagos, which is the main commercial hub Buju, which is the capital. Jonathan. Rosenthal. Is The economists Africa editor. It is the biggest rising in. Nigeria in a in a very long time. So it seems there was a lot of pent up frustration before this about the police the really has been an and frankly this goes back a very long way that the protests of Tatton's really deep well of anger against the police and in particular against the special entry robbery squad, which was set up in the one thousand, nine, hundred, ninety s many's tackle violent crime in logos. And this has been a particular target because of its brutality people have seen as sort of absolutely faceless and an accountable. Amnesty International looked into it and they found that just in the period between January two, thousand, seventeen may two, thousand and twenty. They found more than eighty cases of abuse torture extra-judicial killings and found that they've been absolutely no accountability no attempts by the Nigerian police force to police itself, and so how has the government responded to all these protests? What you've seen as really two faces of response on the one hand you've had. Quite a violent response by the police of police have fired into protests. We believe the two people have been killed by the police that there will serve reports of police using water cannon, tear gas being protesters, and the like, and the very same time this has been happening. You've had the government's trying to come down almost the side of protest saying that they would dismantle police unit that they would redeploy the offices elsewhere and prison Bahari has has spoken to. This is just one step in our immune. To excessive. Loser. In order not sure that the parameter duty of the police and I look for some agencies. remains. The section of lives and loudly hoods up people. Let's there will be investigations civil society and Human Rights will be involved in this to cry up to bring accountability bring greater oversized to policing in Nigeria, and that seems to be giving the protesters what it is we're looking for. It is a first step of what the protesters want. The they've been I is quite skeptical of the school. There is a very, very long history of. Police violence and police abuse many years people in Nigeria would call special police, units, kill and. Previous protests have been match with with previous promises to reform units and to bring in more accountability. So I think there's a lot of skepticism by protesters about whether the government will follow through. That south has. Has. been dissolved different words to need disbanded and dissolved this year we're not funding for the same lies. Okay. The second issue is that they are are concerned about. The much broader issue of pleasing injustice and rule of law than just this special anti-robbery squad. There are calls for Vesa Training for police officers, much better judicial oversight, and frankly also just better pay better training and more effective policing. In that regard, it seems to be a real echo of what we've seen in America and elsewhere in the world this year. It really has. So when process brockhouse initially in the United States on black lives massive movement, there was a lot of empathy and sympathy within Africa broadly, and one saw both ordinary people and leaders of States speaking out on this issue, the year twenty twenty remembered for the massive groundswell to push back. The frontiers of racism. Under the umbrella. Hashtag black lives matter movement. As a country that has known to well the and wish of institutionalized racism. So Africa supports the demands. Quickly in Africa in the sense that. A lot of civil society groups and just ordinary folk in Africa would see their leaders condemning what is happening in the US and yet. Overseeing police, sources that we're frankly as as violence and dangerous at her across many parts of Africa. There's really been this upwards of support Nachos for black lives matter but turning into into anger at their locally sing. Of course, the SMI- Jaren issues has also taken off. Nigeria has a very large, very, very active, very vocal diasporas. We've seen protests taking place else when that's been brought in some international stars cut each on up a John Vega have been speaking on this issue.

Why some dems dislike Reid Hoffman

"Might, be here at recode centers on tech billionaires who they are, what drives them, and what exactly they spend their fortunes on. And these days one answer to that last question is politics. So I, try and chart the gusher of billionaire money flowing. Into American. Elections. Often in secret. Joining me on the show today here is my editor at recode, Sam, open hey sam hey teddy. So last week, we published a story from you about one of these billionaires read men, the founder of Lincoln Board member of Microsoft, a major democratic political donor. So I think this conversation is a chance for us to talk about why out of the many people in Silicon Valley could be covering why did we focus on hosman? He's not really a household name the way that Mark Zuckerberg are Jeff Bezos are let's talk about what makes him an interesting character in Silicon Valley. Yeah I mean he someone who? Has. A ton of. Money. But more. So is one of these people who sees himself as a quote unquote thought? Leader Right. He sort of coins terms that are used in startup land. He has a podcast which has tons of listeners and he's basically sort of cultivated this image as one of the good guys of silicon. Valley. And in the last four years, he's taken his billions of dollars net worth and decided that he wants to become the tip of the spear of Silicon, Valley's to oust trump and he's doing exactly that Nacho spending his own money but sort of serving as a port of call for all Silicon Valley so that's why we thought focused on Reid Hoffman. As a way to talk about the bigger story, which is the politicization and the new partisan ethos that has taken over tech over the last four years. One of the things that we talk about early in the story as we talk about his donor table and I think that gets at this idea that. He's Gathering his fellow billionaires to take action as well. So can you tell us a little bit more about the donor table and how it works and this big money machine? He's created for Democrat politics in. Silicon. Valley sure. So Hoffman is not just putting his own considerable net worth into this. A lot of the secret sauce of political fundraising that happens you know oftentimes in the dark at private meetings is the art of getting other rich people to do the same thing. As you to create leverage. This is someone who started linked in all about creating social networks to drive professional change and stuff like that. So Hoffman has basically created this donor table, which is a fancy way of saying a bunch of his rich friends getting together to fund the same stuff. So Hoffman has some political help and there are people who are other billionaires who maybe don't have fulltime political help who turned Hoffman they say, Hey, read what are you funding? Can I? Get Out essentially and read in turn will frequently challenge other Billionaires Ju to do the same thing. So sort of what this creates is this network of rich people were funding. The same nonprofits are the same super pacs or the same candidates behind the scenes and what the ends up creating is some organization really well funded others don't and no one really knows this donor table exists, but it's sort of is how big money politics works, which is you know without full Disclosure and accountability and transparency. But read is sort of the node of this new political network something I'd like us to talk a little bit more about is you know there are billionaires all over the country on both sides of the political aisle pouring money into the twenty twenty election and you know I think it's important to cover silicon valley in the billionaires here. Can you explain a little bit more why Silicon Valley is of particular note why are we focusing on? Tech Billionaires. People Reid. Hoffman when we cover politics and money in two thousand twenty. So at the core of read bins takeover of the Silicon Valley money machine is this tension that re dispensing millions of dollars to house trump and yet lots of Democrats hate him and the reason is Hoffman doesn't just want to fund the Democratic Party in the traditional ways he wants to fund Democratic Party in a very silicon valley way funding start-ups that might compete with the democratic establishment. Of State Democratic parties which are the backbone of the National Democratic infrastructure. Hoffman has basically declared a war on the Democratic Party establishment and that sort of has obviously made a lot of Democrats. uncomfortable. He's willing to fund things that push the envelope that some people have ethical concerns over. It's not as easy as well. Re Hoffman spending his fortune to hours trump. There's a lot of uneasiness about him and that makes them a fascinating character the fact that how? Democrats. Both accept his money with open arms and celebrate him. As you know a bore against what he sees a fascist threat at the same time, he's being very critical people who've made their entire careers about being a professional democratic political operative and a lot of ways. Obviously, this gets at a broader criticism of Silicon Valley, which is the respect expertise. They think they know everything I think a lot of Democrats feel that way about Silicon Valley in. But SORT MINNESOTA symbolize this bigger debate about whether any of these silicon valley people know what they're talking about when they enter a field that is not business.

"Tiffany would be in the kitchen gathering the food and I would not running out with a Vat Adam as you got in the parking lot like eating it their hand. What's his name from the office? And Chilly Oh Pool in the parking lot and she's just like just being really happy interesting. Black Ski mask just rolled up over her eyes. She's just like Oh. I thought I had that cheese. I Oh God God the things that they do have cheese all right moving on. Oh golly totally derailed while is chatted with Audrey as they both got high hi and Spain. Her guard down bit by bit when they were done wallace through her to the ground and demanded the combination to the safe at Taco Bell. She didn't know what the combination should was so he asked about her personal account as she had just returned from vacation. There wasn't a lot of money in their wallace was frustrated so he did what he does. Oh No put the Boston joke. Honor no drag her to the bedroom and raped her. She was frightened and begged him not to hurt her. He continued to rape her and ordered her to get dressed when Spain turned her back. He put the chokehold on her again. As she lay unconscious he tied a nightgown and shirt to make a makeshift rope and strangled her to death. Oh my God the sky. He put Spain's body in the shower wash doll evidence and then put her body on the bed on his way out. He stole her credit card. That's terrible idea that bad. No don't do that. Ah that bad that no good. No please no these O- obviously the similarities between his last two murders of or excuse me the murders between Hawk Doc. In Spain were very similar. Very striking Both victims were young black attractive women who were killed in their homes. They both worked at the same Taco Bell. And we're both killed. Oh by ligature strangulation. They were also both robbed of insignificant amounts of money. The murderer washed off both at the bodies and both home showed no signs of force industry industry free entry indicating that the victim knew the murderer the investigation into Spain's murder by the police however records no connection to any other recent isn't murder in Charlotte case was considered unsolved. Six weeks passed and Wallace kept to his pattern and went to visit the home of Valencia. Jumper a friend of his the sisters once again. He talked his way in telling her that he needed to talk. Someone about a fight. He had with his girlfriend after talking for awhile. He suggested that jumper call McKnight night his girlfriend to tell her where he was when she turned her back Wallace choked her dragged her into the bedroom and raped her. He then choked her to death with a towel. Here's where things start it to a switch up a little bit. According to his confession he soaked her body in Roma wait. What why he then put some pork and beans on the stove and turned on in high? He took the battery out of her. Smoke detectors struck a match and lit her body on fire. Oh my gosh foster. A WOW VACA why flom Bay I think is the word you're looking for. That's not an escalated. That's going off the rails. I I think he's been off the rails. I've killed dividend. That's bad to say right now. I'm sorry Rebecca kme. I hate also with Humor K.. That's why I'm here sweets. Edison Rebecca I. Don't I needed that this topic. Thank you very much. Okay never ordering dessert with you. My Diet is going to be on point next time we Oughta town together. I'm just GONNA stick to this box of candy. I haven't seen either of you. Order are things on fire has been option was the next point on your own before leaving. He did take some jewelry off of her body which he later pont despite being in troubled by tests showing that Jennifer did not die of carbon monoxide poisoning which is generally how someone actually dies in a fire Giss or finding any evidence of inhalation and through any suit Shusha stuff in her Airways county medical examiner. Michael Sullivan ruled the cause of death to be thermal Komo Burns saying that. She was lit on fire so quickly. That's what killed you dying from smoke inhalation. Anything that like has like if the pot had caught on fire on the stove yeah and she was passed out in bed. She would have died from carbon monoxide poisoning or smoke inhalation versus the actual fire got it His decision effectively ruled the death accidental. Although the victim's injuries were not consistent with an accidental death he ruled it undetermined her death would have prompted did a more thorough investigation which may have shown jumpers sure cause of death ligature strangulation so if they had actually noted that it was not accidental told they would have done further research and realized that she didn't die from the fire so I'm mad at Wallis Matt this police station whose not paying attention at all to anything anything they will realize that the batteries were out of the smoke detector will remember there seven guys handling all? I don't condone. What they did was covered in Rem? That might that might leave a smell also basically they just did like a very very minor. I don't even think they did an autopsy. I think they just did like a medical exam was apartment complex. I'm not sure because I'm not sure about what is this. Nineteen Ninety four ninety three ninety. Four Yeah Yeah I. I'm not sure. What the apartment complexes I think we're actually still on ninety three? I don't think it probably wasn't ever systems. Would've been a thing right now. I think it was a home because he said that they were removed. The battery artery out of the smoke detector. Well May I do that. But I'm saying it wouldn't have been like a sprinkler system fair because he's saying he had his arm to smoke detector but anyway so they just did basically a very minimal investigation Russian because just like a little more investigation would have shown the strangulation marks. The battery being removed the fact that she was literally covered in Rome at that time they thought that the case was isolated slated because it didn't match the previous murders because he's escalating and it wasn't a Taco Bell employee. Yeah do you want to know what Mr Michael Sullivan had to say about about it during the trial Michael Sullivan who is a medical examiner. That said that it was thermal burns. No 'cause he's Douche nozzle too it was just a bad judgment call on who of not doing any further investigation into her death. No Sir you get reprimanded now. I wish you would have been reprimanded. He did then. He remains the county's medical. Oh my God. I don't like that don't like that. Why why why are you going to bring us facts? We don't like thanks. I found them. They were interesting. That's how we got Phallic festivals. That's not a good reason. Also why we have a show. Thanks for the wine. Iraq I thought you might need this one. Thank you thank you So five weeks later on September fifteenth. We are so in nineteen ninety-three dropped in on Michelle Stinson then another friend from Taco Bell. Oh my God I didn't even think about it I stopped at Taco Bell. On the way that's why I have such bad heartburn. It it's not sympathy heartburn could be and also my husband do the fact that I laid like flat out on your floor for forty five minutes candy and then had red wine and then more gaining and and I'm old and fat. It's fine that's not true. It is on both accounts older. You are the oldest behind you. I am you're not. She is your baby. AP Here's the baby baby sweet. That's why you do all this. Technology discrepancy technology stiffer. We all three of us are millennials. Let's talk about Wallace. Let's so he dropped Michelle stints and a friend of his from Taco Bell. She was twenty years old and had two sons ages one and three. No you can skip. Get past this when he doesn't do anything to kids in this one except for leave the motherless after talking for awhile. According to his confession Wallace gave her hugging told her he wanted to be with her and to have sex with her and that she should take off her clothes. She told him that she was sick so he demanded to see the medication she was taking and she he couldn't find anything to show him so he then raped her on the kitchen floor and then put his infamous Boston show but decided for some reason to run to the bathroom for a towel. You'll pay attempted to finish the job with the towel. But she continued to fight her life basically. He then stabbed her four times in the back with the kitchen knife. Oh No Using a wash cloth he wiped his fingerprints from everything glass that he had been drinking out of the phone which somehow got ripped out of the ball. The door the walls the floors everything thing at some point her son her three year old son woke up wandered into the kitchen. Wallace blocked the body and told him to go back to bed and then flees the apartment. He threw the knife in wash cloth over the defense near the back of her apartment. Her children however did discover stimpson's body when visiting friend knocked on the door and the three year old told them that their mom was asleep on the kitchen floor for my heart is broken and shattered into a million pieces thank you would you like wine. Needed chuck my wine all do like Laslo note. And we'll be ed to perfect drink break open Kentucky. Look so good old buddy Sullivan determined that Michelle. Simpson died from her stab wounds. Good job with ligature strangulation as a contributing cause is is not known if the investigation conducted by the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department established. That Wallace was a friend of Stinson. Although everybody knew that he was it did come up that she frequently I ate at Taco Bell where he worked but no official connection was made this infuriating so this note.
