"So we're happy to be joined today by Brendan Collins and Pablo Puentes of make path. Thanks for joining us today is. Yeah thanks. And you. So, let's start off with the the really broad question of what is make path. Path is a spatial data science. Shop we focus a lot on open source tools, and we bring our passion from various domains. To gs and we aim to build. Inclusive communities around you as tools, and specifically we have a project X. Ray spatial, which focused on roster based spatial analysis, we combine a rationalization pipeline with a set of universal functions which apply an. To Rosser data and also are named in ways that Gif professionals recognize things like surface analysis tools slow hill shade, aspect on these are the names of these tools in the s domain that people recognize. And we offer those tools As a python based library that anybody can access read the source code to and contribute to. We we take open source tools, and we help solve our clients problems by applying open source to their their specific domains. These these domains are very diverse working in areas from healthcare to environmental conservation. Finance Natural Resource Management. We know that geography and the science of of place is very important, too. Many domains and we find ourselves learning about these different domains as we apply open source geospatial tools to their challenges. We we basically bill. We love building open source, really powerful tools, and then if we have clients are like. Hey, what else can we do with these tools? Can you help us apply these really complex problems and what he help? So, how'd you guys come together as? Building this new path path. That was that was bad, wasn't it? Sorry. That's okay well. It's all good. We'll take it. So I WanNa talk about what you've been doing before and how we can. Yeah so I got involved in GSA in the mid to thousands being the S. lab manager for the Center for Sustainable, development, which is a kind of environmental science group in Central America. Working a lot with agriculture. And then moved on to work. As part of the team at the Nature Conservancy looking at site selection for projects in the red area red in this context is reduction in emissions from deforestation and I. Ever Dacian where Zeh countries that have high carbon output can find carbon credits in developing nations to incentivize them to protect vertically sensitive ecosystems, tropical forest is a great example of that, so a lot of these projects occur in in the main tropical forest areas of Brazil Democratic Republic of Congo Indonesia the top three countries for tropical forest. So using I was using DIS to help. Do Site selection to maximize dollars spent? Two or environmental protection through the conservancy We Pablo night. Live in Austin We started to connect in the music scene. Both of us are musicians songwriters. We go out and play open open mics and so that's how can Pablo and I met, but then we quickly realized that we had a lot in common apart from our music background, and over the years as we would spend time together and hard about things it just made sense to get together in work together as a 'cause. We were hitting the same problems, but Pablo represented us. More! Experience on what it is to create a company and create a culture and I represented a bit more of the technical side, and so we were good partners in kind of coming together, 'cause we represent those different areas. in filming kind of some of some of the. The rounding out the breath of our skills, really we we both. We both think we are easy to find and the other one is a really great fun. So I came out about I came out of Stanford about ten years ago, started a company So I had a lot of experience. Products Scaling a company and I. Really liked. What Brennan was doing and we teamed up and I bring a lot of experience again with the company building with a product design had to think about about by these projects and I've always had an interest I don't have a detectable background in jazz. She fired his. I've always had an interest in it. My Dad was a biologist and we would always go on these. I've been looking at maps since I was five, and and we'd go on walks in the new-look onto poverty maps and understanding vegetation maps so I guess I've been training for this for a long time without even knowing but done now. It's a little bit of my. Time and I love it the physical world and data to to solve problems in the s really exciting to work together and. We've been applying for some of these tools and really really interesting ways, and I'd love for brethren. Talk with it. This is a blog. A very big piece we're working on. That's coming out on the next, Tuesday! And it's A. It's a real world application vary timely of these told rags, these tools, a really cool powerful but the story of Man on the Moon is man on the moon, not N-, not necessarily rocket as cool as. Cool as Mathis, the the real story. Is that the the the the impact that has the? and Ny Brandon. If you WANNA, talk a little bit about the story that were published using the x Ray, spatial tools and data Cheddar I think that's That's a great example of some of the things that we do.

"How like how the direction you went into journalism is like I mean I even in the future. I feel like politics. I mean you did the mean. You broke the meaning that Bloomberg was paying the mean. People like it's all merging into your world. You have like the Big Dog New York Times. Like editors coming in and check like what? What's that like being in like a real like newsroom? In a before now you went into quarantine them our looking at your like my life was it. You get put into like real life like forgiven news where you're in meetings were like what. Where am I talking about dot? Yeah it is weird to be near Times I never. I mean I tried to be a full time reporter about this stuff for years in the audience. Wasn't there yet so it's been cool I've been. I've always advocated for this sort of section of Internet with Spencer. Like I think it's like you kind of realize you know. People are spending more time on their phone and take it seriously. I I will say like I don't know my editor at New York. Times is very chill. His name is Cory C. Guy and he was like an old school gawker editor. And he's just very he's the he's the only person that I think. I could work for a New York Times because he gets it he. He's more time on. Tick Tock than I do so he he just Kinda like understands it But I've done other stories for other sections in it's been you know different but everybody everybody at the. Times is really great and people. Respect your like authority on a certain beat so I feel like it's really collaborative they're like it's it's honestly awesome like everyone is really great. So it's cool. Why does your editor posts if he's on ticked like The Washington Post Guy? Yeah while Corey like older and has actual like manager responsibility. I know Dave from DC. Dave was really big on vine he was a really big viner like back in the day. So it's funny to see him as a Ted talks are now. What are your favorite talks? Do you like what would you like suggested you? Do you like more skits? Do you like the dances. Like what do you think makes a take talker successful? Will you can be Tony Different niches. Like you could just be like a satisfying video to talk or do a lot. I kind of like the ones that are like riffing on Mike Lake. The more Mimi ones are like making fun of events and stuff. I don't know like the World War three ones or whatever was happening. I have not seen all we get is just like really. That's why we you've been la. Take Talk I wonder if it is like Geo tagged the Chinese government knows. Oh do you know my sources at Snapchat told me? Oh I don't even know Calicut take talk first off. There was an a tick tock has crazy level. It people don't even so they have facial recognition on like in the APP. I mean I was so advanced. I haven't tried to like pitch it back but like the algorithm is using face recognition type stuff. I pass what we've been. Yeah sophisticated I mean I. Adam Asari said on stage Internet last year. It's like them who's the C. Of instagram was like it's the main I think it's definitely what they view as like the main innovator in the social space now these all Chinese engineers it they just bought out the best of the best of everywhere. They have the best everywhere. I'm but it's but it is based in China and I think bite dance. Has this very intense work. Culture the product team on that APP and doing which is the Chinese version is like unparalleled in so tick Tock in China is way more of a e commerce platforms So Future. Us version could end up being way. More like where you can sell like. How does that work people sell stuff on? Tick Tock already. There's no right like you said there's no like e COM functionality going in China which is the Chinese version of tick. Tock has a little bit different. It's a different people. Use it differently than here. Because you're we have instagram youtube and different APPS. You know so. It's like position differently. People use it more for like sharing everyday moments too but yeah I mean I. I'm sure they'll build in some sort of commerce stuff eventually because the money is in our Charlie. She has the Dunkin Donuts Cup very obvious. She sips if she drinks it. She goes she used to go in there like she used the Dunkin donut. I wanted her. She better gotten like millions from Dunkin. Donuts which is not talked about. And if you know you don't have to air it out for the mountain view. She gets these Dunkin things like that should be millions. I hope they didn't get her before she had. Wwe But actually she's a UTA. Wow Chunk of your money and agent. Well I mean they could make her get a big. You know Bursa what she would have said to her. Damn versus an agent with I one hundred percent were parents seem very on top of that weight. Is that viral tick tock of showing all their family mansions that fakers that real. Oh I haven't seen it but I'm sure that's fake. Oh because somebody's like each of the Blah Blah Blah's house SPA These mansions. I'm sure that's bake. I just don't believe speakers like Charlie's bedroom I you know. I don't know she's from Kinda. It's not for not for the photos of was the viral but their kitchen looks huge. Their living rooms all accused here. I mean I don't doubt that they live in a nice place for sure like Charlie grew up in Fairfield county. But you know I don't know I haven't seen it of all their matches but I am skeptical of like anyone that tries to like investigate like that type of stuff. Her Dad was like an entrepreneur. I love all hurtig talks. They feel like she's a good and their dad take talk. You know what? That's what I love about. Take Talk It really. Is family oriented instead of families shunning so instead of like a lot of people at that age? Don't WanNa be with their family. It's not cool. It's like actually. It's cool to rain your mom in and like do something together. That's what I I'm convinced. This is my conspiracy which it's joke conspiracy but artemis like that. Imagine right now if the quarantine didn't have tick Tock I feel like people will be going way crazier but at least it's giving everyone chance to get famous. Maybe and working on my tiptoes comes from China. I know we're not calling it. A Chinese glue gun hired to say it's not as not a Chinese so to say but it did was from Wuhan saying maybe it was a marketing knock. Jk Bad joke. Like yeah you gotta put that on talk and have you seen the little kid. That's like a conspiracy talker. He has all the conspiracies to send him to you. There's this shoot. I can't remember his name but he does. All these conspiracies about Tek talkers and they're all like really crazy but they're kind of funny and it's like stuff like that then you with the all your exer- free time now that you're in quarantine make another like Taylor's playlist of like tick talkers the fall like 'cause you get a comedian. Thank God for your twitter. Which is this Cher? Why had it to talk instagram account? I just never updated anymore. I need to get better. Obviously I don't think the new vine sadly is kicking off our side. I always want people have success so bite. Yeah I delete that. Delete if you like it. I think you know bite is independently run. It's you know I mean when talk launched. They launched them billion dollar marketing budget. And it's owned by the most valuable startup in a world. Which is this Chinese. Tech conglomerate. "To avoid the subways it's entirely possible St John's in NY you are switching to online classes only Juilliard is canceling performances to prevent the spread of coronavirus and number three it's off to Capitol Hill president trump is expected to pitch a plan today to give Americans some economic relief amid the corona virus out this could be really interesting and maybe very helpful depending on what happens go to Steve import buyer CBS news White House correspondent and do we know what's going to happen Stephen well we don't deserve matter of fact the president said yesterday in the briefing room we will we be going to Capitol Hill to make this patch well it's it's not on the president's schedule came out hours after his briefing room appearance so we're trying to get clarification but at the moment the indications up on Capitol Hill from our sources that they they don't expect the president to come today despite what he said yesterday but here's what he did say he said that he's going to ask for a cut in the payroll tax he's going to ask for relief for affected industries like travel tourism airlines cruise lines and help for hourly wage earners so if they have to call in sick they can be made whole the president's economic advisers are expected to go to Capitol Hill and we'll see if the president joins them but for the moment it's not on the public schedule the White House released just before midnight last night and at the heart of the matter is sick time and whether or not that time off if you have to work from home or whatever would be paid or not paid and who would pay for it public health experts say that it's increasingly important for a public for employers to give workers flexibility to reduce the spread and it's one thing if you have you know if you're full time employee and you have some kind of sick leave benefit right even people who undersell quarantine are being told to stay home for fourteen straight days will in most cases that exhausts the entire allotment of sick time people might have for the year if they haven't already use some yet they'll certainly be out of it by the time they're self quarantine is up and if you are an hourly wage earner a part time worker and you have to call in sick or you work in sort of a casual environment then there's no guarantees so this is something that the president spoke vaguely of yesterday we don't know for example how much is proposing to cut in the payroll tax that's the six point two percent tax on the first one hundred thirty seven thousand dollars in a person's income it funds social security and it was last reduced in this country in twenty eleven and twenty twelve by two percent right now it's received a lukewarm reception up on Capitol Hill when Barack Obama was president Democrats sought as it an effective way to stimulate the economy because the payroll taxes paid by all workers even if they don't pay an income tax and did the the reception now on Capitol Hill is to say well we're not sure this is necessary and by the way we don't want to raid the social security trust fund to to deal with this problem right now so we'll see how this plays out but the president is promising some kind of a major package to stimulate the economy and it's really aimed at shoring up the stock market and and at a swishing the concerns of investors and that is the biggest thing right now thank you Steven Portnoy airport traffic and weather together every ten minutes on the eight sponsored by New York department of environmental protection you know Billy never idols and Tom In something that the entire scientific community as well as the vast majority of the rest of the world agree is an existential threat to all of us. That has to be addressed by all of us well there's a simple political explanation. Which is that the chief of staff Johnson new one this political fight within the White House but I think you can also ask well why was the level of support of the political and. Public support for Resolving the problem not strong enough to overcome the will of yeah of one Man Who Wasn't even the president and I think that leads you into some larger questions about our ability to grapple meaningfully with a problem of such enormous stakes. And, problem ramifications wouldn't be felt, for decades Rican generations we talk about the effects of, climate change we're talking about civilizational death. And I don't think we like looking, at, that in the face and so we do whatever we can not to By nineteen.
