"Wildfires burning in eastern central washington are not only keeping firefighters busy. They're keeping wildlife specialists like the folks over at pause in lynnwood on their toes. Dr nikki rosen. Hagan is a veterinarian for the nonprofit and she joins us this morning to talk about all of the work. They've done so far this summer. Dr rosen hagan. Thank you so much for your time. Absolutely thank you for having me. So how many animals do you typically treat during wildfire season. So to be totally honest. We have not seen any cases like this before. We haven't had any animals that were known victims of wildfires. It's entirely possible that we've had animals that have been displaced as a result of the fires. But i don't think that we've ever seen animals that come in with very obvious. Burn injuries as a result of this. This is a really novel thing that we're dealing with this year. So tell us about the animals. You're tending to now. So right now we have admitted a total of four Black bears That had been injured by the wildfires. And the first one came to us at the end of july and she was her face and ears were pretty badly affected and she had mild moderate burns on all four feet and at the time. We kind of thought that this was going to be just a one off We took care of that bear for several weeks and she did really well and we were feeling really good that that would hopefully be a one and done and then we got the call that there were there were more affected. Well dr rosen against since you say you typically don't treat animals that have been injured in wildfires How do you go about tending to them. Yeah so the good thing about wildlife medicine is that a lot of it is very new. A lot of us is just figuring it out as we go and even though my colleague dr grows night obviously both went through vet school and we learned all the basics. We did not learn necessarily how to treat wild animals so managing burn. Injuries is something that we do learn veterinary school and so we both did have the basics of how to do this the challenges how to do it in animal that i can't just go into physically hansel right. We can't just go in and hold these bear cops james their bandages and give them their medications so that has been a little bit challenging to figure out the best way to keep the tissue protected. Apply appointments needs to be on there and then get the medications these animals and so it's been a lot of sedation where we have to either sedate or fully anesthetize these animals in order to do this safely effectively but so far it's been going really well okay so it sounds like the cub seemed to be responding to the treatment. But what is the interaction. Been like when you do have to deal with the cubs when they are awake. Come when they're dealing with the pain of their injuries and being in an environment they know nothing about. Yeah exactly so One as far as dealing with that. These bears are so resilient and they are just. They're doing really well. They're moving around really well. They're eating everything they're playing. They're doing things that you would expect. A human in their position would not doing as far as interacting with that. We are geared to get these animals back out into the wild. Having wild animals be familiar and comfortable with humans is is is definitely not in their best interest so the enclosures that we have the man we can shift them between different enclosures with guillotine doors and so they are not regularly seeing or interacting with people when we have to sedate them. You know that's a little bit of a challenge. That's a bit of stressful process. But it's usually fairly quick And so and they bounce back quickly sedating. These animals frequently is is hard emotionally. I think got me on the whole team here. But the bears don't see much worse for the wear they're continuing to do well and they bounce back from these procedures. Really quickly okay. Well that's good to hear. What are your concerns about this wildfire season and others. We've seen recently. The concern is that in addition to the loss of the wasatch animal lives in injury to these animals. Is that now. we're losing habitat. We're losing land and certainly fires can be natural right that they are part of a cycle and the earth is resilient and things about stack and recover but when they are being such a fast rate. I think the concern is that the turnover time is not fast. Nothing so these animals. I think are losing more habitat. In addition you know humans. We continue to encroach on their natural habitats. So they're continuing to get cramped and crushed together in and losing a lot of their natural space and so we're seeing more and more conflicts essentially with humans and domestic animals which is increasing our numbers here as well. So what's next for the cubs we keep these cubs in care through the winter and then once the snow melts enough up in whatever mountain range going to than than they'll be released and as far as learning things we don't have the ability to replicate what what mom and dad teach them depending on the species but what we can do number one we will end eventually when these fares are healthy hopefully combining them altogether so they'll have playmates that interacts russell which is practice for for fighting defending territories. And things like that and we spend a lot of time hiding food and putting it in logs in you know burying it in buckets that have dirt leaves and things like that so that they learn that they need to forage and search for things in the wild or so we're not releasing him out there without the skills to survive. They absolutely can't do that. All right dr. Deke rosen hagen. Thank you so much for your time. Thank you so much..

The visit comes as the State Department works to evacuate more Americans and others from Afghanistan, an official travelling with Blinken tells reporters of the US facilitated the safe departure of four Americans overland from Afghanistan, and the official, who asked not to be named, says the Taliban were aware of the operation and did not impeded. U. S personnel were on hand to greet the Americans, though the State Department wouldn't say where they arrived. The news broke as Blinken arrived in Qatar to thank this Gulf nation for offering temporary shelter to Afghans heading onward to the U. S and other countries. These are people who traveled from Kabul up to Mazar in hopes of getting on one of these planes. They are saying that the Taliban are not giving the planes permission to take off. Arizona is set to become the first state in the country to end a longstanding practice used by attorneys of dismissing potential jurors without having to explain why. As NPR's Cheryl Corley reports, critics say so called peremptory challenges are used to exclude jurors because of their race. Potential Jurors can get dismissed for cause. If there's doubt they can be impartial. With so called peremptory challenges. Attorneys have a set number of times they can strike a juror without giving a reason. Arizona appellate Judge Peter Swan and a colleague asked the state Supreme Court to eliminate the challenges. Swan says there's no ignoring what often happens during jury selection. The defense strikes white jurors disproportionately and the prosecution strikes jurors of color disproportionately, Swan says A U S Supreme Court ruling that called solely using race to dismiss jurors unconstitutional hasn't solved the problem. "Cc has been entrenched with some of the firefighters in our region this season and even he's feeling the fatigue not just from watching these men and women fighting literally for their lives but also because he's had to watch the potential. That's hit too close to home in all. This is obviously my home as well. And so you oftentimes ask yourself. When is it going to be my turn to say. Humidity rendered the ashes. I went out to blue river which was affected by the holiday farm fire last year and then just a day and a half beginning on that labor day. The fires ravaged that entire valued at one point. We thought that we here in eugene because the fires just happening east of us we thought the fire could potentially spread an affect our community. We'd have to pack our bags. Labor home behind than worry about our pets. Thankfully that never came to it but we did have like a week and a half of just dance. Heavy smog where everything was easy orange grayish color and the sun. Which is this glowing red or it was very surreal. This kind of the some delays fog is kind of surrounded the entire valley and when the rains finally came and cleared out. The sky could see blue sky again. I almost cried. Because i had never gone so long. Just worried about my health out of my children that of my that's my neighbors and saying the landscape bathed in such a surreal glow and distilling be particulate matter as he moved through aerosol. Dance you could. You felt like you're walking through veil and to this day. I still occasionally have waking nightmares about those gray skies and that bill orange orb in the sky. It was just really unsettling so. Brian painting a picture for us from his perspective. But how are firefighters coping. I caught up with brian after he spent time with cruise in central oregon at the middle fork complex and the firefighters are really at this point on the wildfire calendar dealing with what was called cumulative fatigue Firefighters are trying to stay focused on the task at hand and also take care of themselves. But you know there's just a lot of factors out there that they really have to struggle with. Will you say trying to take care of themselves. What are some things that they are doing to help them get through the day to day grind of battling the fires dealing with the successive heat that the region has seen here lately. It's very difficult to describe. A daily routine of you will for firefighter. I did talk to lauren. Durocher who's the public information officer. It isn't much better nick. Bond is the state climatologist and he joins us now with more good morning. Nick glad to have you here. It's not like people have didn't either tomato plants. You know the drink. Some water that they need and so forth but farmers east of the mountains residents. I mean the situation. There is just absolutely incredible. They're especially the dry land. Agriculture is in as bad a shape. It's it has it's ever been and that's It's not just due to the heat wave. We had at the end of june but mostly because of the deficits in precipitation that occurred during the spring of course made worse by the hot temperatures in in there with regards to those on temperatures wall we after the extreme heat in the puget. Sound lowlands in everywhere. We moderated somebody. It has continued hot in the other parts of the state not necessarily record-setting but still well above normal. This was what the second driest spring on record at least since records were kept back in the eighteen hundreds. Yeah that's right so going back well over a century the second riots spring when you're gonna consider march through june and Just to give some numbers there. Statewide averages we only received about six inches of rain. Where normally it would be eleven inches during that time. As a percentage of normal is even worse in the lower elevations of eastern washington. So what are the latest forecast models chevy about the next three months. There's no sign of any monster heat. Wave of anything. Like we had at the end of june but after some More moderate weather you know here the few days and maybe into early next week. It looks like it's going to the warm up some and again. It doesn't look like there's going to be much in the way of precipitation given the conditions Expecting early start the fire. Season bats coming true. And unfortunately it's probably going to be a long one two and what about the predictions for a la nina in the winter months. Are we still on track for that and will do anything to. I know. there's nothing we can do about what's happening right now. But yeah that's right. The conditions in the tropical pacific are now favoring more probably a weak to moderate lining. Yeah than not It's affects are liable to be kinda later in winter and what's really important in these kinds of situations is win. Our fall rains. Start and they're what's going on el nino la nina. You know the price of one hundred percent cotton socks. None of that seems to Determine just win. Those rains start. And so that's something that you know. Attorney General Merrick Garland announced today that the Department of Justice is suing the state of Georgia over that state's controversial new restrictive voting law. Stephen Fowler of Georgia. Public Broadcasting is here to join us here to tell us more. And Stephen what exactly is the argument that the Justice Department is making here? Well. The Justice Department is saying that the 98 page voting law that was signed earlier this year contains several provisions that are intentionally designed to make it harder for Black Jordans to vote that includes a ban on government entities, mailing out absentee ballot applications, limitations on dropbox uses and a narrower window to request an absentee ballot. And they say all of this taken together is in retaliation for record turnout record black turnout in the 2020 election. Does the challenge affect the law right now, as it is? Well. There are currently now eight lawsuits pending challenging Georgia's different election law. Virtually every part of it is being challenged, and so it will take some time for those things to be sorted out. All right. Well, this is the first significant move by the Biden administration against the number of new restrictive voting laws that have been passed by a Republican led state legislatures all over the country. Do you think this could be the beginning of something larger? Absolutely. What we saw from the attorney general. Today was a note that the Justice Department was going to use every available tool and their arsenal and every aspect of voting law to examine these changes that Republicans put forth after the 2020 election. And they say that Georgia is the first of potentially many that they're going to look at to see if these laws hold up to the scrutiny of the intended results or if they were actually disenfranchising people. I was finishing up a the first year of my distance group at a couple of folks in a distance mastery group and so we went online. And i thought well geez. Maybe we should be doing this all the way. I mean with with a new group. Because i wasn't willing to take on resident students who would be in house and didn't look like travel was going to be an option so with the help of student who's very interested in woodworking. We put together online lectures and then figured out how to transform that and to into an online mastery program of weekly classes and Yeah we've been running about else since beginning of october. So maybe maybe middle of october anyway. It's been great. The biggest challenges me to produce videos. Yeah technology i'm not a technology guy and and so You know the audio feedback and getting the cameras. When i have row halio with me It's great because he's he handled the camera work. I was just spinning my wheels for for weeks. But I totally understand that I would go out into the woodshop into. Do some work and I just wasn't focused. You know and when that happens, you start making mistakes and it's on. I need to walk away from this right, and but slowly getting back to it, so it's nice yeah. And putting in another few hours on A. Month long project. He's finishing things and. Those little victories I think are important these. Out Definitely and you know when we complete a project. The new things for the woodworking school, and and how you're. Taking it forward in our current situation. Well I've been thinking about this for a long time. And that is doing some online classes and I was thinking of doing some episodic things where I would. Talk about. Some topics so I bought A. Place out in the country several years ago and it's a mess and there's tons of work to be done. And I was sitting in the shop there one day, and I said. This is, this is my fifth shop a set up. Maybe I should talk about that, so that's. Sort of where the idea was born for me, I thought well. I'll do a series of videos. On setting up shop. And then pandemic it and I thought well. Time to.
