"Nvidia successful from the beginning is the company builds chips to solve important problems and the that are tailored to those particular problems so when invidia decided deep learning is the most important thing that we're going to be using our gp's for the next step was to customize the architecture for deep learning and volt has the first fruits of that effort and so the computational capabilities of volta are really astounding you know one voltage ep can run at over one hundred twenty tariff ops when you're training model and that's you know about ten times faster than the the speed that you would get on our prior generation gp and so that's that's a really exciting capability how does the architecture for something like volta differ from something like graphics volta is different in a lot of ways from our previous gp is it's just a lot more focused on compute workloads so especially the memory subsystem has been beefed up to handle the kinds of data patterns that that are required in in a lot of compute workloads it also has a lot faster injure arithmetic which is really useful for addressing math and more i would say complicated workloads where you need to do a lot of indexing math to figure out what data you're gonna load and operate on so the whole architecture has been revamped and then in addition to all those other features we added tensor chords which are essentially matrix multiply units that can do small matrix four by four by four matrix multiplications and the thing that's really great about tensor cores is that they dramatically reduce the energy cost of reading and writing the operations from the register file because the majority of the work happens inside of this bigger chunkier unit and you don't have to be constantly reading and writing all the intermediate results to register file and so that dramatically reduces the energy required to do a matrix multiplication which then makes the processor dramatically more efficient.

"But if you have a cpu that needs to do the you you hit diminishing returns on number of course in your cpap pretty quickly if you're doing something like photoshop or the some of these like video rendering tasks you can get a lot of benefit from it but there's a reason why most laptops are probably stuck around two to four maybe a couple more cores because you just actually don't see much benefit from it because you know you can't if you're typing a document you there's no way to lake you know spellcheck the next word 'cause you haven't type that yet so you can only took one word at a time or you know there's the number of things that you can and then you know the writing software that can kind of synchronize all these cores is is difficult as well so yeah right you hit some diminishing returns on this cpu but the the gpu it's it's it's a very very good task for that so that's why approach has worked really well there and that leads into the big renaissance has been happening and this convergence of gpus and what nvidia has been doing and what had been happening on the academic computer signed side of deep learning and what we've touched on in the past but from nvidia his point of view deep learning is an incredibly new and great way for them to sell more gpus because deep learning as we've talked about you have this massive amount of data that you want to load and sort of.

"I guess the one one sort of big thing is most people know about intel and that they have intel inside and it's this cpu and then there are nvidia graphics cards and the gamers have these cards and they put them into their machines and they make their games possible and like xboxes and things will have invidia processors in them so can you sort of share a little bit of the engineering or sort of behind the scenes of what makes a cpu better for the cpu things in why gp was even necessary sure sure so the the cpu is probably the the main thing people think about when the when they think about the chip that runs a computer um you you really couldn't of modern computer without it it's the central brain that does all of the it runs all of the programming that your whether you're right you're so for you buy or you know whether you're using a browser or whatever everything is is running mainly through the cpu and then eventually we started farming some graphics tasks out to this thing called the gpu the graphics processing unit and as you can imagine graphics is pretty repetitive so you've got let's see however many pixels are on your screen so if you have like you know a thousand pixels across by five hundred pixels tall which is not a real resolution but for the sake of argument that means you would have like what like five hundred thousand pixels and you you know you compute them all one by one and you do this over and over and over again and for when you get into like however many times a second you refresh like your refresh rate if you're doing it sixty times second that means you've got to process all of this and compute what each pixel we'll be in each of those 500000 places.

"In most spheres of life doing something leads to results that we hope or pleasing but you feel like you should be doing something but i think that our record now shows the benefits of as you said alison buying and holding and holding and holding so there are any number of stories that i could tell right now and i'm tempted to tell like my greatest hits of all time which would be maybe amazon which has been an awesome holden holden hold from three to over a thousand so that's been an amazing investment recommendation for our members but i i decide let's go a little bit more recent this is still a by and hold and holden old but nvidia so nvidia is a fascinating example of this this is a company that i think many of us may have heard of these days but nvidia kind of years ago was making graphic cards for pcs so for gamers for video game or is like me you would try to get a really nice nvidia car to drive the graphics part of your computer that would make the games awesome and over the course of time the business has conceded to diversify they start turning these from graphics cards into being the processing units four the machines and then they took their graphical processing units and they started to do things like hey let's put him in cars and as things become more autonomous for cars we can be driving that and by the way i is showing up and we can we can help with that and and tesla tesla's beautiful screen that you have we can we can participate there and so nvidia today is a monster it is an awesome company but here's the story some of the numbers so i first recommended on april fifteen th taxed day two thousand five it was at six dollars and sixty one cents split adjusted today so in today's terms it was at six point six one.
