"We do now know the sixth seed in the Western Conference. The Utah Jazz because the Oklahoma City Thunder went on a 25 to form run. Then they knock down a three with 11 seconds to go. They just stunned Miami 1 16 1 15 So the Jazz are the six IGA Thunder and Rockets will meet around one. We start the second half Clippers and Nuggets once again with John Barry, Here's Marquess. Can we gotta look at that one. Like most Scala George is talking about his ears were burning. That's right. What a shot he made to you about. Okay? What a great job, Billy Donovan. On this year, he has a wife who's up for a coach of the year. Meanwhile, that means as Kevin said, Utah is locked into the 60 and very likely could be facing the Denver Nuggets in Round one. The Denver still has a chance to beat out Clippers for that to seed at halftime here, it's an eight point Denver lead over the Clippers. J. B. What adjustments? Those clips need to make the second hand. Well, let's get with Paul. George. Get him going. He's three of 12 in the ballgame. Make three, therefore, for 16 and then finally I talked about in the first. I think you have to put a bigger guy on Jochen. He could just dominate a small post he sees right over the toppers passing angles. You have to put a big on your He's got 15 points, six assists in just 16 minutes. Big 12 to move forward with plans for fall football season

"Danny Yesterday was a tough day for a college football fan like myself getting a chance. The last couple of years. The host thes Chicago's college tailgate show on Saturdays with Jonathan Hood in Adam Abdullah. I love college football. I love our local teams, and I love professional sports. But there's something special about the pageantry. The passion small college towns that burst into hundreds of thousands of people on Saturday afternoons thie games, the football games itself very exciting, and usually you get to see something on a Saturday in the fall day. I don't usually get to see in an NFL game. Maybe it's a high scoring affair. Maybe it's a great comeback. Maybe it's hitting a nine team teaser that you set up throughout the day that that makes you a bunch of money. It's It's what I do in the fall is I love Saturdays. I'd live for Saturdays. Yes, Very. The news of the Big 10 postponing all fall sports until further notice, and as the quoted here says in hopefully in the spring was disappointing. And then the Pac 12 follow suits and they postpone all sports until the start of 2021. So the key there is. The Pac 12 is postponing football in the fall in fall sports but also college basketball usually starts at the end of October, which the Pac 12 is telling us. They won't start college basketball on time. They will postpone that 2021 It was sad. It was disappointing. We have reports from the Big 12 that there are plans that they continue to head forward and they are planning on playing football. The has been out, saying that their medical reports have suggested that they could continue to play football. Notre Dame is plan planning on playing football in the fall in the sea as well. So Any your thoughts hearing that the Big 10 the Pac 12 that both pulled out of fall sports for collegiate athletes, and in the fall first, I think it's incredibly sad for guys like you and I people listening to us that just love college football, you know, college football season doesn't go off this year. The only sport we're going to have in the months of November, December is the NFL. So we have to really cross our fingers at the NFL. Get this right Or else we're gonna have no sports. Because the MBA is going to be done. The NHL is going to be done. Baseball is going to be done. It's sad for Spectators that liketo watch it. It's incredibly sad for the young athletes. I mean, you know they they've worked their whole lives to get to a point where they're playing sports at a collegiate level. And now to have this ripped away from them is devastating. And I understand How they feel. I understand that they want to play. Listen. When I was 18 to 22 years old. I made a lot of dumb choices, and I probably would have wanted to play too, with a pandemic going on. But I do think that the Big 10 made the right call. I think that The liability issues. You have all these players on all these teams putting themselves in harm's way to play a sport that's making schools. Million's upon billions of dollars. They're getting nothing but a free education, and that's still something but you're putting them at risk. They're not employees like in the NFL. They're they're doing this. To provide themselves in education, But they're also putting their lives on the line to raise a lot of money for their universities. I think it was the right call. I don't know, necessarily if the Big 10 needed to rush to it. You know what happens if the Big 12 pulls this off? They say they're gonna have a nine and one so nine conference games, one nonconference games. What if the Big 12 pulls this off? And they have a successful football season is the big 10 Then sitting there looking like, boy? We we acted too soon.

In the Western Conference. We already know that huge him is the number four seed, or at least a phrase that Justin is in the 45 game because the Rockets lost to the Pacers today Wanna wait for Indy with the wind? They are locked into the 45 game as well. Toronto did beat Billy Billy, though, of course without Ben Simmons. They also play the second half without Joel Embiid. Because of a wrist injury. Good news was X rays were negative. Celtics and the Sixers will be coming up in the 36 match up in the Eastern Conference from the playoffs begin. As for the Western Conference, the Los Angeles Lakers they are the team that are looking a little skittish in the bubble. They've got three wins and seven games. The question posed to Rachel Nichols. We in danger of seeing a non Laker Clipper Western Conference finals. I mean, the Lakers have potentially an incredibly tough playoff draught here. They could see the Blazers in the first round. You know, they would still be the favorites, but the place is an incredibly tough match up there a dangerous a seed, and then potentially, the Lakers could be looking at a rocket. Second round matchup, and then if they make it past both of those, then they could see the Clippers in the third round. And if they make it past all of that, they could get a bus or Raptor team, you know, and in that order Celtics, I mean that, you know, well that our heat like like Al, those teams being like some final matchup, So I think the Lakers have a potentially extremely hard road ahead. We'll just have to see and we'll see what happens. Well known for the Western Conference playing who gets that eight seed coming up. On this weekend Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Eastern time on ABC television. The eight and nine seeds will be decided tomorrow between Portland between Memphis, San Antonio and the Phoenix Suns. Spring League football tourney to play in bubble

"That. I was reading an interesting story. This just hit There's gonna be a Spring league in football. A 16 football tournament in Las Vegas. They will start in October. And they'll use a bubble concept very similar to what we're witnessing now in the NHL and N BA, the teams will be stocked mostly with players that have been released by NFL teams. And also 20 to 30 college players from FBS power five schools that either decided to opt out in 2020 or had their season's cancelled. Interesting. They'll be 228 players 38 players per team. The law be housed in the same hotel will practice and play at the same facility. And they'll be quarantined within the air quote bubble. Would the woods? That would be Brian Woods? Who is the Spring League? That's what they're calling it. The Spring League CEO. Said that Events will be funded internally. With the possibility of recouping some money from a broadcast agreement at a later date. Interesting boy. Somebody very opportunistic and I don't know. You put something together that big that quick on how they're going to play in October. But how could college players being the bubble? When are they going to school dropped out guys that would be done their job. They're not going to play it all right if college football's going to cancel the season So they're not going to go back. There's going to be some players ago. Okay? I guess I'm done done going back this spring League. That's what it's called Conduction annual monthlong Siri's of practices and games. A showcase talent to the NFL and CFL scouts. It also hosts several other smaller and more frequent player showcases, most recently, a four day event in Denver last month. I didn't even know about this. The spring leagues bubble schedule this fall calls for 10 days of practice starting October 7th. Followed by nine games between October 17th of October 28th. During games the league will ban huddles. And limit each team to 19 players, three coaches and three medical staffers on the field or on the sideline. The remaining 19 players and all their staffers will be stationed either in the end zone tunnel. Or off the field entirely, and will be called when needed. Disinfect intense we placed on both sidelines. Three game officials will be assigned to clean the game ball. "And then for Denver. It's simple. You gotta play some sort of defense. They're giving up 124 points here in the bubble. They gave up 109 before they got here in Orlando. They have to show a little bit better on the defensive end. If they want to make a run next week, when the playoffs start to the starting line up there Being announced on the floor right in front of us right now, about 70 feet below us. Banks. or It's something myself and my team we listened to you guys all the time on on just fly sports It's got a requirement for anybody that works for me to listen to your podcast though. They'll thank you. Yeah. It's awesome to have you. I mean, I know every time we've talked or I've I've just more and more intrigued by what you do. Because I, know you're not like you're not all over social media. You know you're not. You're but entire, I've just like I am. So I wish before I left. California could've stop by and really excited that chat about your. Your your insight into your system and how before we get into that I'm curious to like and I like getting into this for especially for people who have who see things in such an expansive way. But what was your gateway into coaching like what got you interested in it, and then what were some really big milestones in changing the way that you thought about your process? Yeah I, you know quick Reader's Digest version is. A pretty good athlete grown up back East right and had scholarship offers and was fortunate enough when I was in. Eighth Grade. To walk in the YMCA, fine little dungeon part where all the tough guys athletes working out in in. There was a level five Olympic lifting coach, and saw me with my little fitness books working out and said Hey kid Chimera. I WANNA teach you how to really train and while I was in eighth grade I started training with. Professional, athletes Olympic, athletes learning how to snatch clean squad sprint hurdles. Everything. So was a amazing experience for young kid be pulled into that kind of culture right away. Top properly. And then after. Know went into finance world business world is kinda miserable, but I was always getting fathers and guys played college football with call me when Scotty? Knew so much about this stuff. Helped me, I got a contract or my kids to a scholarship, teach him and I was doing it on the side and just fell in love with it and started growing in saw business opportunity, and then got called sportsmed guy in Toronto like the work I was doing and went up there and started running its clinic work with NHL guys in Canadian Olympians and stuff like that. It just grew from there kind of an organic way of. Loving it as a young young kid. Being, lucky to have someone mentor me and saw how it changed my life, and then fell into coaching. I feel like you're not the. For, some reason the finance and I didn't like it, and then again, the sports perform I. I've heard that story before I. Don't Mac Shakers on here had that too, and I feel like I've heard others. Maybe I do feel like that that like systems kinda thinking or do you think there's any thinking and finance that is helpful for sports is just make quincy dental you are. I think it's I think it's for competitors. We'll always WANNA look at measures of success. And that's kind of a natural thing. Until you realize I work, I work hard to get something and I realized I. Don't like it when I get here, that might not be success but I think finance is a challenging. Competitive. And and you know with detail and all these little nuances you can take and I think that attracts people to feel they wanna feel successful right, and then you realize you're sit in front of a computer all day long. Yeah. I. Can totally see that. Makes that makes sense I. You're speaking of success to ask the first thing. It's official question. I had and I just I guess, I, felt like starting with this rather than jumping right into the six lanes but. What is success in sport mean to you or? Yeah. So. What it used to meet. Right. So we all have these objectives and goals right, and we think that success when we meet that, we're going to be successful when feel successful yet, what happens when you need it? How long does they last for me? It lasts maybe five minutes and then I'm spending the next stuff in saying, okay. GotTa, start grinding now for the school and realizing that my daily experience wasn't great. So, success for me sport or any endeavor is your daily optimize experience that's sustainable over time. So if you're an athlete of Your Business Guy, whatever it is, if you're living your dream, you're loving your days, you're making a contribution feeling fulfilled. Ben. That's success to me. And so that's how I look at it when I get an athlete that. Wants to scholarship, but he's loving the training loving where he isn't high school having great teammates. Great relationships performing on the field. Every day is not future. You know obsessed all the time that successful to me. That makes sense with the process, right? Like. So often we just look at this. What's the goal? Win The Akron serve get the scholarship, but then, but then what I mean. Eventually it just. Eventually. There's think an emptiness. I mean, it's Nice Scholarships for sure. But at some point you get to the top and. Maybe realize you're on the wrong ladder something, but it's Where I've dealt with the most Olympic athletes after an Olympic year while they struggle. Mightily, they struggle with purpose with focus with what it all means. Up the disappointment of even if they got a medal, did feel as good as they thought. But the daily optimal experience their love in their life in the training or joining, they're enjoying the relationships are building that seems to be sustainable

Brewers fall late to Pirates after squandering 4-run lead

"Pirates play the brewers last night it was. Four to one excuse me five. The one pirates going into the top of the ninth, it was five to five after the end of nine, and it was sixty five Milwaukee at the end of eleven, the bullpen, leading one get away a particularly Michael, felise and Kyle Creek eventually driving us, never asked us was charged with the loss he got the task of pitching in the extra innings where they put a guy on second base with nobody out to start things. Baseball's gimmick associated with its restart partway, a couple of home runs from Com Moran his second and third of the season and they. They got Gregory Allocco into the lineup. He came off the code list and served as the H.. The pirates sent Jason Martin and outfielder to the tune of training camp to make room for PA- Lago on the Roster Bucks'll try to get against the brewers tonight Josh Lindblom. Against Derek Colin, it'll be Holland's first appearance in a Pittsburgh uniform on the field, but not his first notable achievement. He took care of that on Sunday and Saint Louis when he got thrown out of the pirates, cardinals game while he was sitting in the stands, not playing, he got heaved for arguing balls and strikes. "It. Like I love the colors I love you collars look great. The colors are great. The logo looks great. I can get used to crack in and the one. You're think is a good one. It is different. It is distinct and the one expectation that I think we all have a bow. Seattle at this point is that everything they do is going to be new is going to be progressive is gonNA surprise a lot of people whether it is the name which is very nontraditional, whether it's the first you know green arena climate pledge arena. Everything they do is going to be different. We expect that they're hiring policies progressive the way that they are going to do business as progressive I. Just hope that it doesn't stop now I. Don't think that it does but what does do Elliot selfishly since I have conceded sasquatch. Bang the drum for different colored ice for Seattle Oh my God. I knew you're GONNA. All all our producer I wrote down actually I got to tell you I wrote down. When does jeff come up with the different colored? Ice Oh my God yeah. I'm telling. Pretty, it'd be this early. It will put it this way Jeff. If one team's going to do it, it's going to be this one well. They WANNA. They're promoting. They have the green arena, so do green ice here you go. Here's your chance. I'd love to see if the NHL allows this you know. It reminds me a lot of the raptors. When the raptors came in new, there were a lot of people didn't like raptors and I remember. John Bits of doing an interview on the Fan with Bob McCowan and John. biddle said Bob. What do you think of the name and he goes Bob? Said I hate it and John biddle said good. That means that you're not in our target audience so I! Don't care what you think about it. And the other thing, too, is you talk about the team? Look at their twitter feed now that we have a name or strategizing all the ways to draft your favorite player. Yeah, like there are people in the league. Telling me I'm sick of these guys already sold. The rivalries are building. Yes, rivalries are building so the other two Jeff I I'd heard was. I heard the amount of meetings over the small details were unreal. The color of the is how many is you know I didn't realize I saw the video. When you look at the logo, the S has tentacle through it. like that black line is the tentacle of the cracking, and there was one person who told me that They weren't so sure about this until they saw that video and I have to say identify with that. When I saw the video and saw that that's what that black line was supposed to be. I thought that was really cool. What are the things about the whole reveal by? Seattle is the security around at the secrecy around. It the lack of leaks. I thought for sure that by the morning of the announcement it would be out there and confirmed by somebody I'll tell you the one thing that I learned from one of maybe if not my favorite movie of all time jaws. Is this Don't show the shark. Secret that movie is they don't show the shark until much later on. Don't show the shark and the one thing that Seattle did in this entire process is. They didn't show the shark like sure. There was a temptation there to extend the metaphor. Show the shark, but they didn't do it. Even in that video as everybody is going through this pruder's style frame by frame by frame, trying to look for clues I gotta give it to Seattle Man. They didn't show the shark at all. One of the big conversations I heard after they decided the name was. What's the Mascot GonNa look like. Well and that's when you get the rivalry about DETROIT WITH DETROIT. Yes, it looks too much like a traditional octopus. It won't. There's no way it will. No of course not, and they also said like the Jersey, the crack and has to look. Not like a WIMP, it can't be a wimpy cracking I. Don't know enough about mythological creatures. I'm not sure there can be a wimpy cracking. Does it exist I? Doubt it every movie I've ever mccracken. They're pretty nasty, but they definitely talk about that. We can't have a soft cracking. So the jerseys were revealed the branding is revealed and Tim Leiweke, who's a CEO of the Oak View Group was on hockey central with us. The day of the announcement and he let something slide. Let something slip. That was pretty interesting. We spent more time going back and look at the Metropolitans. In the fact, they won the Stanley cow, so we spend a lot of time looking at that history and tradition. I won't spill all the beans, but I'll tell you. There's a third and Fourth Jersey coming. Eventually wore on her that legacy in that tradition. Hundred Seventeen team. Of course when the won the Stanley Cup I would imagine that if they're winking at history that hard, and I think that they will. That will probably see Abana raising on opening night while you're going to do something special rate. I think they'll do a number of the special things on opening night I would imagine that would be one of them. Yes, and you know a nice touch too here. We are here here. He goes, SEATTLE. Here's here's a million ideas here on this podcast. HAP Holmes was the goaltender for that Seattle team homes played on a number of Stanley Cup, champions real good goaltender born in Aurora in the Aurora Sports Hall of Fame, died relatively young I think it is early fifties in Florida, but he wore a baseball cap. I think it might have been the first goaltender in the NHL to ever wear a baseball cap. It would be nice if they did something with HAP Holmes and abate. I don't know what it is I'm just doing this off the top of my head, but if someone is wearing a hap-. Maybe it's whoever the goaltender is for. The opening ceremony wears a HAP, Holmes baseball hat that would be a nice touch for the. Hockey nerd like me out there. WHO DIDN'T GET SASQUATCH well? One thing I looked up was to Seattle have any retired numbers and they don't. Remember when Ottawa came in had an old retired number. Frank Finnegan, and they honored it. But Seattle, I can't sense that they do. Okay, so now. Seattle's job is to make this team to create this team out of nothing not unlike what Vegas went through most recently. Do. They have a friend in the flat Cap Seattle All I. We talked about this last week. I, think they're a huge winner. In the new CBA their job just became. If easier is the right word, but I they gain some real advantages and. A few teams have said that to me that the mistakes Vegas they were going to avoid them now. Circumstances have dictated that someone's going to have to make them, and it's a huge advantage for them. There's no question from a financial point of view Elliott. We just mentioned the flat cap here second ago. Given the economic realities NHL NHL is going through now, and we'll go through in the next couple of seasons I know. I opened up by saying how important is Seattle team, but I'll ask it again from an economic point of view to this team, not just become where the more important teams in the NHL team thirty two new infusion of money. Well there's no question that that's true and new infusion of enthusiasm to the Batman, and daily made it very clear and their negotiations with the players that ownership cash flow was very important. They got expansion money that players don't share in from Vegas and there were some owners who thought they didn't get enough. In terms of the system stuff, edgy arbitration that they wanted, but one of the things they could be sold on was that they've expansion money coming in, and that's their win, and that's cash, so there's no doubt that Seattle's big for a lot of reasons, and the other thing too is even before this. There were people who were predicting. Predicting that Seattle would be a top ten revenue team in the NHL. They're gonNA need that. They're merchants already hot negative. That's one of the reasons. It didn't get out because it's not ready at right me, you can order stuff, but I learned through this process that one of the ways that logos and names get leaked Jeff is that you have to share them with vendors or you presale them to vendors and things like that. They didn't do it this time. They didn't do it this time day. Kept it all close Alright talk, congratulations, seattle you now have a name in the NHL has team number thirty, two, welcome thirty one..

"Only one thing is made me happier this week than that. That is what's a you can replace laid on the line with Lyle old-line. Omega, that's so annoying by try of Lyell road land, and telling you man, you will never hear that song by triumph the same way again. That's true lyle. Okay here we go. All right quick shift edition of. The podcast we're going to talk to Steve Mayor the chief content officer of the NHL, but first these story of the week the Seattle thirty two's have a name. They are the Seattle cracking before we drill down and getting some of the. Pacific says a Sandy Atlantic about this. How important was the events of this week for Seattle for the NHL? Like how big a deal is this for the League? It's a huge deal and first of all. It was a fun topic Jeff. Life is hard for people right now. And that was a fun couple of hours. The reveal the video, the look at the Jersey. The name like whether people like the name or didn't like it. They were kind of laughing like Whoa. That's really off the board and I know you don't like it. Because of the nicknames that can come from it, but I love it. It's different. It's different for hockey. It's a step out of the. The normal, it's bold. It's it's a change. It's a try it something new, and I think hockey badly needs that. There were a couple of interesting things I've found out in some conversations number one when they were talking about the Jersey with the people from Adidas one of the things they were saying is we have to imagine what it would look like to lift the Stanley Cup? In this Jersey we can't think that it's going to. To look terrible to lift the Stanley Cup in this Jersey and I liked the Jersey. I liked that way of thinking i. think that's very big. The other I heard that was interesting, was that they chose the name crack and I, and then they went about the identity, the logo and the Jersey and the like the story line of the cracking, and there were some people who heard the name and they were like, are you? You, sure about this, is this really a good idea? And then they started to see the logo and the identity behind it, and they bought in and a lot of times when expansion teams come in. They won't reveal the name the logo end the Jersey at the same time they'll do maybe name and logo at once and Jersey later. This was a win because they did all three at once and I think that's sold people. I think they had to do it that way. And I I think you're right and to the point like we've talked about before I, wanted sasquatch. Works on a whole lot of levels, but again as I pointed out on this podcast before I've realized, and I've been dragged kicking and screaming into this realization that not everything is for me, and that's okay now. I don't want to I gotTa WanNa shoot an Arrow and then paint a circle around it after it lands I. Don't WanNa. Be That Guy Oh. Yeah I, liked it all along cracking his great. Oh a homerun tape measure, but at that reveal. I didn't hate.

"There's GonNa be a rethinking of a lot of this stuff based on what happened the trade deadline because we've only seen ten games dylan. Mellow in Winnipeg like we've only seen like what like ten games of Ilya Kovalchuk with capitals it's it's incredible to try to wrap your brain around what these teams will actually look like not only the mysteries of what shape the guys are in coming back, but also the mysteries of how these pieces fit. Because we don't even know, we didn't even get a good run with them. In some of these cases, it's GONNA. Be Great. This seeming everybody can stay healthy. I guess last night. Lastly, how do you feel about the sort of the moral implications of return to play during global pandemic? Oh, boy you know the players talked you. I'm basically taking my my thought process from them as a seems to be at some point, you've got to trust the medical people, and as long as that's happening, and as long as it seems as though the NHL is being really quite thorough, based on the documentation and everything on on the protocol at these guys are going to be following You know power to them I. I do have concern I'm going to be one of the last guys back in restaurants I promise you that Greg but The NHL seems to be doing the best. "There are certain issues where you know. He certainly on the right side of it, but he's got that complicated. Pass and I. Don't think jets fandom is a monolith I think you're gonNA find people on all sides of that, who so may never forgive cane, and some may see him as a leader right now. I've been guilty of. As anybody and tried to make Winnipeg Santa Monolithic at times and dealing with some of these issues in the past, so it's a very good point. All right moving onto the aforementioned trivial issues. At the heart, the heart trophy I wanted to have you on specifically, because we've been talking about the Hart Trophy on this episode, we've been talking about our air and we've been talking about Nathan. Mackinnon and we've been talking about the on dry settled but Winnipeg. Jets have maybe one of the more complicated candidate Ceram VP. Depending on what your mileages for goalies winning MVP in Halibut. So, where do you stand on on his candidacy? Sell me on it or tell me why we should stay away from him as a candidate for MVP. Well I think the only reason to stay away from. It would be You know a discomfort with goaltenders winning the award or perhaps you personal attachment to the cases for pr or even dry Seidel but in terms of how unique goaltending it as a position within the NHL, great teams can be swamped by poor goaltending. Average teams can go. All the way of goaltending gets hot. It might be a little bit unfair to consider this, but goaltenders are the most important position of the game in terms. Terms of contributing value wins above replacement all those sorts of things, and then you get to the season, the Connor Hellebuyck had where he's stopping an incredible amount of shot volume, an incredible amount of shot quality. Nobody gave up on expected goals than the Winnipeg jets did this year their bottom five by shots scoring chances all of those things well, and if you're outside of your organization, looking in, you think okay well. You know they've got those star forward. There's a lot of things that you might like the. The defense might be suspect, but you know they're right on that playoff bubble all year long. That's probably what you expect. The truth is corner. Halibut was shelled this year. And if you ask folks in the organization about what went well, answer number one is always con. Hello Book I think. There's a case to be made that. He is the reason when it takes in that nine seat. He's the reason they have a shot at the playoffs at all and the more that you focus on Winnipeg's own zone. Zone I I I'm not sure there's a more valuable 'cause in the NHL in terms of on ice performance, then putting a team on your back and getting them into the playoffs. That's an incredible threshold for me based on what he has to face, and the thing that I always find interesting about his candidacy Because occasionally you Kinda veer off into the narrative aspects of these candidates. Rate is the idea that what like Winnipeg lost? What was it four out of six defencemen coming into the season Real good one real good one, Druba. So you you look at that as well and and what he was playing behind in, it's it's. It's stunning again this season that he had. Absolutely I. Mean True for sure Tuba and Morrissey were Winnipeg's, you know matchup ready pair throughout lassie's and the year before when Winnipeg beat Nashville seven games. Handled Johansen Forsberg and Arvidsson which is their most dangerous line so peak winnipeg involves Morrissey and true playing important minutes Morrissey goes from trueba all that kind of chemistry with down to Tucker. Pool Man, who's mostly been in the NHL or injured for the last couple of seasons, but that's drop and suddenly there's an entire matchup brady pairing. That's Kinda struggling. Neil comes in. That's good. Good but Winnipeg Losers Dustin Buffalo into what's going on Tyler Myers is gone. Bench had begun to take on a bigger role as things have gone as well and so credit to the jets and their attitude, and the amount of pain and shot blocked all those things that the jets defenseman Lucas Visa, an Anthony Potato and some of the newer faces typically further down the depth. Depth chart pushed into some pretty heavy duty in Winnipeg. Credit them. That doesn't change the amount of work. The Corner Halibut had the amount of zone time in Winnipeg's and whether that's on the PK whether that's even strength, the amount of shots from right between those dots in the center slot Miss Coverage. These things happen and Connor halibut ability. He led the NHL by a country. Country Mile in goal saved above expectations based on shot quality, and so credit to the team i. mean the attitude is good inside the room. Things are right, but That doesn't change the amount of pucks yet to stop. Yeah, it's fascinating. Is there another word that you've got your eye on? That's you're you're sort of interested in how it's going to all play out. the two and I'm sworn in I'll defer to you on which one of these is more compelling, but for me Romeo sees quest for the Norris because I. I know some folks don't think of him as premier defender, but his impact was massive and then also the selke where you know I think there's an argument for less heralded players like an Anthony Sallee to be near the top of the selke voting, but then you've got old stalwarts like ea and and Burger on as well mark stones. Always you know close in in that group as well and I think that's one in both cases where a person's interpretation of what the award is supposed to be often dictates how people vote. Yeah unless your interpretation is that it's supposed to be Patrice burs. Ron's every year then. A Gray area what that? Looks like I. Agree I think both I think all I think out of. Outside of the VEZINA. Every word is up for grabs. The Jack Items to me is really fascinating in the sense that I mean to me I. Think we know with the work he did in Philadelphia should be a little bit head and shoulders above, but you could make the argument for a lot of other guys to for that award as well It's a it's a fascinating ballot up and down outside of the Vesna. Imagine the GM's are gonNA. SCREW UP! But you're right on the Selke like I think Sarah's got the numbers. I think there's going to be one of those. Katrina is now being I. think framed in that drew doughty sense of. Here's the guy. We preordained a win it this year, but maybe he's not the best defensive guy, but maybe we should give it to him. Anyway, you know. When won the Norris? Even worse. Yeah and that's sometimes how these things work out. Man especially on the defensive end where everybody like you said has their own different interpretation. Last thing the the Winnipeg Calgary matchup. We talked to Cam Talbot on the PODCAST. Recently about what a bummer it's going to be to have this playoff series between these two teams played in a vacuum. It's hard to imagine what this playoff series looks like without the Sea of red without the white out. How do you see this playing out like what what do you? What do you think about Winnipeg's chances against this flames team? Oh I think it's pretty much right down the middle in terms of You know I'd say this is GonNa. Be a compelling one. A coin flip of sorts. The easy thing to do would be to look at connor hello books season, and look at you know. Cam Talbot Season David, riddick season and say okay. Winnipeg's got the distinct advantage in net and I. think that's true, but in a small sample like five games I mean the amount of balances that can completely change the course of the series, no matter how goaltenders playing that. As much as goaltending is in Winnipeg's favor and goaltending can dictate series is anything can happen and that one is so compelling that me. If there's even one bad giveaway behind the net one odd bounce, it'll change the goaltending narrative in an awful hurry the other thing that I'm really curious about, and this is something to to really pay attention to about Winnipeg the. Addition of Dylan to mellow just before the trade deadline, I think just a moment ago I was talking about Josh Morrissey needing to go from Jacob Trueba to Tucker. Pool and figuring out new chemistry with somebody who is not as strong of an NHL player. Morrissey was able to play with domed Mellon his last few games that coincided with Winnipeg's winning streak to run into the pause, and it coincided with full health on the jets as well as soon as you give more mellow and then Neil. Peon can Dimitri Kulikov was the other parent plane top four minutes. demelza appearance almost gives Winnipeg in entire new pairing and gives Morrissey a boost. He hasn't had all season long as well so Winnipeg's. The defense suddenly for the first time looks like it could handle top four matchups, which is good. 'cause Calgary's top six is obviously very powerful. Yeah, it's fascinating seeing like you said I mean..

"I guess the first question would be less been asking all our guests today. Your reaction, the last dozen days in hockey, as the sport confronts its own sort of racial inequities. Wall also having hundred over one hundred players comment on. Police, brutality protests and the things that are going on in the world. Yeah I think my lens for it. I mean it begins with the Akeem loose story at the Players Tribune continues through a few other comments, but as you know in Winnipeg, Blake Wheeler hasn't been one of the more outspoken athletes in terms of hey, you know racism is real. It's something that's affecting people outside of the sport inside the sport. Well, he he said he had. He's had a lot to stay. In support of evanger canes say McCain has been talking about racism and hockey, since the two of them were teammates back in Winnipeg and I think the thing that is really special about the way Blake Wheeler is approaching it, and hopefully this means the way that Winnipeg is approaching. It overall is he's not doing. Doing it in in a way that scores, social media, points or you know conveys a sense of optimism, the stuff that he's posting about doing real personal work and we had a forty five minute zoom call with them the other day he was talking about real lurks, starting at home, and then and talking with family about that and I think that's one of the. The more unique things is that you know if if this is going to change, a policy is GonNa get better of society is going to get better I gotta start in the family in the home in the community with individual work and I liked blake. We lose leadership on particular in that and the other thing that wheeler did that. I thought was fascinating. Because I don't think any other player has even come close to it, is he? PUT DONALD TRUMP's. Name in his mouth and talked about trump talked about Bernie Sanders, and talked about kind of dancing away from the idea of this being a political debate, and saying that the in the sense of like. Fica keeping people alive and equality shouldn't be political issues, but also saying hey, listen man, go to the polls, and and vote with your conscience on these issues. If you really care about them, and that's a step further than almost any other player took this year this in these last couple of weeks. Yeah. I. I agree with that. That was an interesting line that he had to that. You decided to walk. I would say because he says you know it's not about Republicans. Not About Democrats not about politics, it's about human rights, and they're human beings being treated on equally, that's not a partisan issue, and then later he says and remember you know you gotta take it to the ballot box and that's not just nationally, so there's there's a connection made that if you WanNa, make the leap that that you know he certainly passionate views on it, and it is. I think it is political because of of how things are structured, but he also I think new is audience and knew where he was out in terms of walking line. That's delicate. I think and in this game in the scope of the NHL landscape to the fact that he would do that and the fuck it. He would even specifically talk about police brutality as well I think he's I think he's almost unique, and he certainly on on the front edge of. Of that among NHL players, yeah, if you had to kind of put it in a pyramid right like top of the pyramid is is sort of you know putting making it political than next stage down is actually addressing police brutality, and then the rest of it is sort of the things that you've seen all these other statements that have been a bit more of a populist stand think than than addressing some of the real issues that are being brought up in these protests. One last thing on on these issues. You mentioned a vendor Kane. Look I think we all have a complicated relationship with Vander Cain. With the things that he's done off the ace including violence against women and I don't think Winnipeg's any different, insofar as a complicated relationship with the Vendor Kane. Have you gotten a sense of how jets fans or the city at large is dealing with his ascendance to being a leader on these issues. And even to the point. Where like you said Blake Wheeler kind of outlook. We should have listened to a vendor back in the day when he was here when he spoke out about the stuff. Yeah I think you hit on the head. In terms of the, it's a complicated relationship and I think Winnipeg House, their complicated relationship with event hurricane I mean he was cast out. A sensibly for for locker room issues. We know the money phone incident, and there's what you just referenced as well in terms of violence, and if it may be tough for for some to see his words on this issue without trying to what about it a whole lot well, what about those other things that? You've done wrong? I? Don't know that that invalidates his perspective on racism in hockey at all I don't i. don't think that's necessarily it, but I can see the founder kind of struggling with it. There's the omnipresent. Of Okay, evanger King Booed PTA. Sue Band gets booed and Winnipeg is that because their star players is that because there's a hint of racial of racism in that as well and I think most just founds will attribute it to the quality of players. They are perhaps a little bit I mean there's been altercations between safely and sue ban on the ice and Winnipeg we'll. Of course. Its memories Evanger Cain wanting Elton whatever the bachelor. Exactly ends up being it's it's a gray area right?.

"Conversations that they certainly weren't having the past at least publicly, and and that's a that's a great first step so I know they can certainly do a lot more just in terms of that. It's least nice to see them addressing and obviously you know. I mean racism and hockey is very deeply entrenched like as a society, but I mean it extends to to so many different factors in so many different levels including whether it's you know European, players or anyone that's basically outside of North America, and that's something that that hockey has been H. O. I should say has been very. Reluctant to kind of publicly acknowledged at least even though it's been something that's been percolating for a long time. Did. Move on you. Differentiating between NHL Hockey I think it's an important lesson going forward for. All right, let's get some of the words. This is of course. The NHL, awards, Bonanza episode of ESPN and ice. How are you untangling the Hart Trophy debate this year? I feel like it's been years since we actually watched hockey so I had to do a lot of a lot of research just to kind of jog. My memory in terms of what actually happened the last time we were watching. These guys play and I I know you and different this a little. Little bit at least we have in the past, but for me. I don't really take a team. Performance into consideration gearing man missing the playoffs doesn't preclude you from for winning an award in my opinion, I I understand that the logic that you know if you're gonNA miss if you're missing the playoffs, anyway the great season. What did you really ultimately accomplish? I. Just think listen. We can't have it both ways. We Up Hockey, ultimate team sport where no individual is greater than the whole yet At the same time we WANNA punish individuals for being on a bad team here. Even though isn't an individual or so I'd rather focus on what the the players in question could control and so with that in mind especially this year I think it throw the. He'd want your Android just like twenty four teams or basically making the playoffs at this point by the time we have to the down we have to. To vote, so it's really tough to untangle that, but I think it's a it's A. It's a very fashion discussions and I sent my sort of logic team. Last week we'll hear writing about this site, but I think the are tiny cases incredibly interesting, just based on the effect the adding here in New York on his team when he was on the ice versus when he was offered. I agree with you in Aaron. Very compelling case what would be your case for not dry in this situation? Being that he won the art Ross? Well I, don't think too much. Is Dodger title as much as it is just what? Did I think the dress idol thing some context important because I think you see the forty three goals one hundred ten points in seventy one games. It's certainly impressive and to counter to. All of that is and we're GONNA get this only talked about the doors and John Carlson, but it's wild scraping that he's creating on one of the whenever he's on the ice boilers are bleeding. All that all kinds right back and it's basically sort of neutralizing all of the that they made or evening out now what I'll say to that is I think contact is important because address idol. It's clear that part of it has to do I'm sure with what they're asking him to do. When he's out there. Both in terms of the ice time burden in mcdavid have because the lack of depth on a team and. And also, because if they're not creating offense at team, probably creating offense so I, think they're asking them to maybe cheat a little bit offensively and quiet zone a bit sooner whenever they see an opening there so they can create those time there too I, WanNa they're known for, and so sometimes that lead to coming back the other way and backfiring, so all of that needs to be taken into account I think. Sharing that he's the second, most valuable player is certainly not a knock the him although I know that. Will probably take that especially after everything that's going on with mcdavid the past couple years, and how it feels like we are kind of moving the goalpost now in terms of playoff, who agility factor in their candidacy? You mentioned the Norris. is going to be a real tough one. You already have some canaries in the coal mine that. Athletic I think it was and I. Think Nhl Dot, com have cast their lots. NHL Dot Com for Carlson I think Yossi was the overwhelming winner in the athletic Straw straw-poll. Where do you fall on this one? Because you have to say that in talking about Kucherov last season, Carlson's offensive year this year is one of the best we've seen in the last thirty years and I have a hard time unpacking that fact from the idea that maybe he isn't the best all around defenseman this season. Yeah, I mean it's certainly fair like. Like seventy five points, jump off the page and what he's done creating offensively and I. Don't think he's as much of a passenger on power players. People make you believe because I. Think some of this stuff does with his vision. Quarterbacking opened up a lot of those opportunities for Ovechkin because that's documents on so forth but I. It's it's similar. Nice I! Don't like it when you look at the actual effect in terms of all the models and. The impact he has. He gives back a lot of what he creates offensively defensively whereas you'll see. I don't think the gap between them. where he has sixty five points, and he actually had even more goal score than Carlson by one. Is Big enough to justify overlooking what you'll see, does and the neutrals. Oh, how? He impact everything when he's on the ice at five on five, and so what he did. Especially with Alex Missing Goes Twenty Games after his concussion and in the winter classic and sort of how he carried that team was really president the volume for an too i. mean he's I most offensive shots by a mile. Who's playing nearly twenty six minutes a night, so he has a lot of those similar. Or checkpoints that calls and hit with pity were sort of defensive drawbacks for me I think that of put them slightly over the top, but I understand that people feel like you know. We often just look at point whether it's not the now. It feels like we're. We're trying to make these other arguments against Carlson's. It's tough man, because like I feel a certain obligation to vote for Carlson because of what happened to Mike Green. Trying to right that wrong, but then again I think the difference is that green at the time also had an analytic argument in the sense that the possession numbers when he was on the ice for very strong and I don't think Carlson has the same sort of underlying argument if you if you kind of you know open up the hood, a little bit on them. That debt green had on his outstanding offense season, so yeah, the wind's blowing towards Yo see and i. don't necessarily think it's an ill wind The callers one that I get asked about every single day when I do radio hits because people are fascinated by especially in Vancouver. You Team Team co-winner team Kale on this one. Day Yeah I guess. Now slightly leaving the Hughes just purely because I felt like he did. Not More, but he did roughly the same as my car with slightly less to work with I. Think you know if you look at the way my car was used and the fact that he's got this sixty three percent opposite zone star rate heavily shelter, and he was himself, but because playing more than half minutes at five on five beginning out, there is kind of a safety blanket for him, and so he was a great spot..

"Sue. Craig tell us about this announcement that commissioner Gary Bettman and the NHL made on Tuesday. Essentially first and foremost there are seven teams. Who Season is over? And the Gary Bettman closed the book on the NHL Regular Season for purposes of nomenclature recordkeeping in NHL Awards. Two Thousand Nineteen Twenty regular season has been deemed to be completed. So the you know the bottom. Seven teams point percentage. Wise are done and that means there are twenty four that are going to be part of this return to play scenario. There's GonNa be a play in series of games involving you know portion of those teams. And then you're also going to have a round robins for for some of the teams at the top of each conference. The top four teams in each conference were claim automatic berths in the first round of the playoffs. They will play interconference. Round robins each playing the other three teams to determine their respective seeds in the first round and on top of all of that. The the commissioner also announced the draft lottery for the teams. That didn't make the playoffs. And even that's convoluted. This is a bit complicated. As if what? I've already told you hasn't been and I apologize for that. Draft Lottery will determine which clubs make the first three selections in Twenty Twenty Nhl draft and it will be conducted in one or two phases. So Gary Bettman makes us announcement and then we were all just spending the next several hours trying to make sense of it and even now having a hard time explaining it going through it all. It's it's pretty crazy all right. So twenty four teams will have a chance to win the Stanley Cup. What is the rationale behind the twenty four team format to cut it down to sixteen teams? Which is the traditional. Nhl Playoff format because regular season hadn't ended rate so this now gives an opportunity to some of those teams that were separated by decimal points to continue playing. And also if we're just being very pragmatic about it by expanding out to twenty four teams your including teams the Montreal Canadians. The CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS THE NEW YORK Rangers. And the these are big market teams. That I'm sure the NHL in an effort to recoup some money here and by having those big market teams in your satisfying some TV demands. You'RE GONNA get more eyeballs on this tournament and then you know you're you're still able to have some form of the traditional sixteen team. Nhl Playoffs by having this qualifying round which essentially each conference is going to have four best of five series to get into that sixteen again. Already sounds complicated. When I say it out loud well and it was pretty clear from Bettman's announcement that this isn't something that's going to happen overnight and there are still significant health concerns. What hurdles are still left to clear before we actually see hockey again? This is important to distinguish could be because This was heralded as hockey is back in the. Nhl Has a plan to get it back on the ice. The let the record show in this Kobe crisis. It was the National Hockey League. That was the first pro sports organization in North America. To say we are coming back is there is a plan but this is more. Here's the plan. If we get back on the ice in Gary Bettman and Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly Were pretty careful not to put real distinct timelines because the schedule of our return to play will be determined both by developing circumstances and the needs of our players. You know this is a multi-phase effort to get back onto the ice in team still aren't even at phase. Two in phase two is small workouts in in the home cities. They're hopeful that can begin in early June and then it would go on to phase three. Which would be training camps for these twenty four teams in the NHL PA in the NHL? Still haven't really agreed to what face three looks like. And that's even before we get to phase four. Which is the hub cities where these games are going to be played so there is still a lot of hurdles to cross here for the NHL to get back on. The ice in a Batman was hesitant to talk about dates but he did say that a late July or early August start was possible. Do you think that's realistic? Here's here's what I'll say about dates attaching Gary. Bettman said this. When he was talking to the media any time we tried to attach from day to something at this point. We're just guessing what if we have cases in players test positive. I know they said okay. If we have one or two cases we're just going to isolate that player in in move forward but if it's more than that they're going to have to hit pause on this thing so as it stands right now knowing what we know you can see a scenario where they are playing in late July but whether or not it's actually going to happen. I agree with Gary Bettman. You're you're just guessing you know we've seen in major league baseball for example that the players and the owners had a lot of trouble coming to an agreement on restarting the season. What have the dynamics been like between the players and the owners in the NHL? Yeah I will give the NHL NHL PA a lot of credit here because he's two sides that haven't always gotten along particularly well and return to play committee which is the NHL NHL. Pa are both represented on that you have prominent players including Toronto. Maple leafs Senator John. Taveras Connor mcdavid so the players definitely had a voice so this has been pretty lockstep between the PA in the NHL to get this done. And and I think that's a big reason. Why there they were able to make. This announcement is both sides. Seem to be pretty motivated to get games in to conclude the season and I give them credit. We'll so craig after all of this time off. What quality of hockey can we actually expect to see? When the playoffs eventually do begin. I mean I know there's been a long lay-off but I'm cautiously optimistic. That the actual hockey being played if they get back on the ice. I think it could be really really high quality hockey for this reason. Normally when you get to the play offs. It's a long grind of a regular season. Then each seven game series ends up. Just being this battle of attrition like the Rules Change You can hold. You can be playoff. Hockey is completely different. So that by the time these teams get to the Stanley Cup final. They're basically limping in in. Its whatever team is healthiest tends to do well? In this case now these teams have had a chance to rest up. Guys that were hurt at the end of the regular season are now going to be back on the ice. They're going to be fresh so I think it maybe just the optus me but I think the on ice action. If they do play. These games could be as high as been in years in the playoffs because he's player's GonNa be well rested ready to go and in your opinion which teams benefit the most from the expanded twenty fourteen field. Who Do you think got lucky here? You have these teams that were on the bubble that still are going to be part of the draft lottery but could win their laying round and I think those those are the benefactors right so you have a team like the New York Rangers. The Chicago Blackhawks. That you don't know if they were GonNa make the playoffs and now they've been given this opportunity without potentially losing a chance of the draft lottery. So I I look at those teams as real winners in this scenario. Because they're they're almost getting the best of both worlds and and you sit there and you look at Iran one matchup and the oilers are fleeing Chicago Blackhawks in in the blackhawks. Who knows if they're going to make the playoffs? But they still have this veteran team with Jonathan Taste and Patrick Kane and Duncan Keith. And they know how to navigate a playoff game in so they're playing this really young Edmonton oilers team with Connor mcdavid. So they may have been gifted an opportunity to go on the surprise run and and maybe rekindle some some championship. Glory from years past may have existed. If all of this had happened while on the other hand there are playoff teams. Here that you.

"Your next trip is closer than you think. What's in your wallet? We're going to keep taking your take. Let's let's squeeze what we'RE GONNA get a couple in here are you excited about the NHL return triple eight say ESPN eight. Eight eight seven nine. Three seven seven six. You can friends over to watch or do you not care where are you on the return of the NHL David in Florida? What's your take great? David what's your take on this high I can't wait and I'm excited. I mean I don't watch hockey. Ever since I grew up in Pennsylvania watching Eerie Panthers Eerie auditors and now that the penguins it I. I can't wait to get past the Canadians do we on the flyers. We don't to say at least we'd be the flyers talk about that that's awesome. Thanks for your take on. I think for hockey fans. Everybody's so excited to get back hockey. I think is less likely to put some of the Asterix on fans with two in California when he calls he gets into. What are you got? What your take on this one. Hey Good morning from the west coast You know what I consider myself. A moderate poor hockey fan growing up in southern California. Just wasn't the thing to do because there wasn't ice around you've played ball any kind of ball you nothing nothing to do with the pot so I mean I probably about ten miles from where the ducks play. I couldn't name one duck player. I'm probably about twelve miles from where the kings play. I might be able to May one current player but when the playoffs start. I'm watching it. 'cause it's an exciting sport that it just seems everything type stuff and playoff hockey great That's where I stand as far as the sport as an avid sports fan. I think this is the greatest thing the NHL could ever do. Because you got guys like me who waiting for any kind of sport. That now are going to watch hockey instead of Korean baseball at ten o'clock at night on the West Coast. I watch hockey now. You know so it's GonNa bring more fans this is a great thing for the NHL. Yeah she you said it well and I think especially what Greg Kinski pointed out earlier that they're talking about a little bit of a March madness approach where games are because they're in the same arena there being a staggered throughout the course of the day. I mean you're giving me hockey all day. That is going to be spectacular. We're going to keep taking your take your triple eight say. Espn eight eight eight seven nine. Three seven seven six hockey's not the only event that continues to try and figure out a way to come back one event that is back is you have see Woodley. Joined I take before his Friday. Night fight obviously before fight night. It should say on Saturday. He was on today talking about the testing the returned to action and what he expects Saturday. Check him out with Dominic Foxworth Max. I think it's for the sport I think in the only way that we should be able to compete is if we have the test nobody wants to go in there and compete with somebody that come Sunday that they tested positive Nineteen they have to go home to your loved. Ones Your family you know. I think they're doing the right thing. Even if you leave the premises in your now like within the the the hotel on the hotel environment you have to get tested again so in playing games. How do you feel generally about being involved? In the only sport that has actually put on matches as actually existed really since cove it since social distancing at least in this country. There's been a golf charity matches and stuff but at the major league level. Ufc is the only one to have staged events and though one has come a couple of. Come before you your early on this. What does that feel like to you? I mean is different. Because we don't have you know eleven people on the field or going to have a huge T. Like some of these other sporting events and you'll see usually needs like three hundred people to producer event. But they've cut that in half and obviously haven't apex. They've got the ability to do a lot of production different rooms. So is just unique that we can go in there and then obviously is one on one so for me. I was training so hard. I've been training since November fight March April fighting beginning. May so I wanted to get this. Perform Sow Sabi training. My blood off and I just WANNA kick somebody in the head. Yeah so I want to take it into the octagon look. What can we expect from this fight with? You have over year layoff. And you have a lot of pent-up aggression it sounds like. What can we expect out of you guys specifically in the first round? I know your last by you. Want in the first round. So what can we expect? It will be excited.

"This morning about whether or not the players are going to be still into this when they get a good sense of how much is to go into it and he says look these guys. WanNA COME BACK. They WANNA FINISH THE SEASON. But they're only going to do it if they feel it's to be safe enough for them and their families so with that being said it's a great point on that ESPN NHL analyst regular Shinsegi joining us. I take care take. I'm Jason Fitz. What level of excitement should hockey fans have today about the actual return of real playoff hockey? Well Yeah let's park all that other stuff for a second. It's very important and it has to all be figured out before you can get back but dude we're GONNA have seventy seven percent of NHL teams involved in a postseason. That's insane like the format they've come up with where you know seeds five through twelve or playing five game series to determine who then moves on to the traditional sixteen team. Stanley Cup racket. That's going to be a blast There are some really intriguing matchups there and it gets a lot of teams like the Rangers. The blackhawks the Canadians. That would be outside of the playoffs looking in. We're not for the expansion to twenty four teams involved in the postseason and even figured out a way to give their top teams. The top four teams in each conference of by essentially to the round of sixteen but still have them play meaningful games example in the Eastern Conference to Philadelphia Flyers of the number four seed. They're going to do a round robin of the top four teams in the conference. If the flyers win all three games they play they jump basically eleven points in the standings to become the top seed over the bruins. So there's a lot on the line even in what is essentially a by for the best teams in the conference. It's a really fun. Inventive format and it's like nothing we've ever seen in on top of that you're talking about a bunch of teams that are going to be. Well rested that healthy and not completely drained from an eighty two game season like reduce other play offs So this could be an unprecedented level of competition on top of an impressive level of teams in the postseason. You mentioned that it's really an interesting angle to this is rest versus Rustam. I saw Bucci on with US last night. Talking about one player he talked to that hadn't skated in ten weeks. So we're that line. I mean. What kinda hockey are we going to see when this starts well first off? If you're into wagering bet on the team with the most Swedes. Okay 'cause the guys in Sweden had been skating for months on end and in some other places they've been able to stay on the ice But in North America. For the most part yeah. These guys haven't been able to get on the ice for for several weeks. It's one of the reasons why there's going to be a slow ramp up. I mean the the the the format Gary Bettman talked about yesterday is going to be something that we'll probably not gonNA see until the end of July Because you're GONNA have to start getting these guys back in training facilities. Get them back on the ice. Get them back into game shape then at the beginning of July we're going to ramp up to maybe three weeks of actual training camp To get these teams ready and then by the end of July they'll be off into their to centralized hub locations twelve teams a piece to start playing this postseason format so I agree. Like conditioning's going to be a real key All everybody getting on the same page is going to be real key but it does seem like the NHLPA was able to negotiate. Ample time got to happen over. The next two bumps talking to greg wish about the return of the NHL. We're going to take your take. Just a second triple eight say. Espn eight eight eight seven nine. Three seven seven six. I'm Jason Fitz Greg. You mentioned hub cities and this has to be sort of the great question. They give us a list. That's fairly massive on potential hub cities any favorites in your mind. Oh Yeah Vegas is a clear. Favourite wants the NBA of moved off Vegas and its plans for restart the NHL Kinda seized on behind the scenes. That's been a speculative favorite. The one of the two hubs cities. Not only because of of where it is. And and obviously where a player in his family out some fun away from the rink but also their capacity for accommodations Facility the the arena being right on the Strip and within walking distance of of some hotels I mean it. All kind of fits what they're looking for So Vegas is definitely a frontline. Then the real issue is are they going to commit to having one of the West one of the East could they have two locations in the West and have the Eastern Conference teams get house? They're the one real interesting one to come on late was Los Angeles Which still has a lot of lockdown provisions in place in Los Angeles County and Orange County But the insurance Family which operates a lot of the arenas in the National Hockey League apparently put a bit in to be one of these hubs cities and the NHL is certainly giving it a lot of attention. So be a situation where we have Las Vegas and Los Angeles is as you places that the NHL chooses to restart its season. Can I be shameless? Home of her second. Ask why Nashville. Didn't I'm going to my show? Come on a wise national. Not On this list Greg. That's a good question I don't know. And in some cases it's whether or not the cities themselves put a bit in like for example I'M A Jersey boy New Jersey Newark Man. They have an arena with a practice facility attached to the arena. There is no better situation. You could possibly want that plus hotels in the area. The whole thing But the devils never put in a bid because they secret their state situation wouldn't sync up with the time line for what the NHL looking for as far as restrictions being lifted so and a lot of cases it's whether or not these like the Olympics where you put a bit in. You're going to be considered you didn't put a bit in then you're not on the list..

"Very very hypothetical but the NHL the NHL Players Association the NHL and NHL Players Association meetings are taking place in which they plan on discussing a possible return for the twenty nineteen twenty twenty NHL season and playoffs in the one idea that seems to be floating around as a potential playoff tournament that would take place in North Dakota North Dakota in the middle of nowhere because there are fewer people yeah one location that's being mentioned for this possible finishing of the of the regular season and playoffs is North Dakota several sites would be necessary but the Ralph Engelstad arena in Grand Forks North Dakota makes sense it is the it was the host of the two thousand five World Junior Championships the twenty sixteen world under eighteens and ends it is the home of the NC double a is fighting hawks they say it is a very impressive facility that's pretty much out in the middle of nowhere and I could see that being the thing they're they're scenarios being talked about the same way with the with the NBA body gonna do we gonna start testing everybody every day a gas remember when we were like oh they're not going to have supporting you know they're gonna have games in front of no fans would we would we kill right now for a game in front of fans yeah it it is wild to think how fast this thing progressed in the sense of I remember believing so seeing Italy in going okay there's no way we would never you know we would be playing in front of empty arenas right in for like a day that became a possible reality and then you know before that could even come to fruition that was shut down and and here we are so you know if if it's shipping our athletes out in the middle of nowhere to where nobody else is in having the play sports for the rest of us is what needs to happen I think we're gonna get to a point where where that's got to happen trump said on Saturday he talked to everybody he was on a conference call with every single leader of every single group and he's talking about getting back to work he said in a press conference look for the NFL NFL to start on time I hope that's right I mean he also tweeted out this morning light at the end of the tunnel that was it that was the tweet okay I'll take whatever I think wherever he can find hope right now that just a day after the Surgeon General who had been you know one of the guys who is somebody accused him of down playing it in the beginning he seemed to be more worried about you know S. seeing Donald did you know Donald Trump often in giving us the fax yeah yesterday he made a couple different appearances on TV and he had a possibly some of the starkest warnings we've heard yes and yet in regards to the next week in regards to the covert nineteen great Surgeon General okay this tragically fitting that weren't talking at the beginning of Holy Week because this is going to be the hardest and the saddest week of most Americans live quite frankly this is going to be our Pearl Harbor moment R. nine eleven moment only is not going to be localized it's going to be happening all over the country and I want America to understand that but I also want them to understand that the public along with the state and federal government have the power to change the trajectory of this epidemic is trust do you find that careless I mean did did those words seem like maybe not the best idea I wish look I I'm sure these people all choose their words very carefully sometimes to me it doesn't seem like they choose them carefully enough so when I first saw this I thought oh my god that's going to scare a lot of people we we talk often about you know the the fear mongering and how not to get caught up in it and you know we want to make sure we're walking that line yeah but then in the same breath we sit here we have conversations about how seemingly nobody's taking anything seriously we've got young people who still want to hold on to their you know their social life by doing all the things they're doing we can't get old people you know who should be most worried of all to stay inside so do you think when they say things like that it's to get those people who don't seem to get the head to get the hit I hope so but I don't think there's any reaching those people that doesn't mean they shouldn't try yeah I mean I did to me I I think I'm over I'm over being mad at for people for for doing things that seem real scary right if the truth is the truth I don't think people are going to realize until there it's in our backyard it's still your neighbor in your apartment complex your neighbor at home or somebody one of your relatives dies I don't think that you know outside of those few things I don't think the average person is going to be touched enough but that's just my opinion saying things like this might get a few of those people to to act right totally agree of this kind is going under the radar a little bit Christopher cross a staple here on through gravel live here and you know usually every Friday known for his Grammy Award hating with hits like sailing and Arthur's theme all tested positive for the corona virus and he is saying it is the sickest worst illness he's ever had in his entire life Duran Duran's bassist John Taylor announced he added as well he beat it already but he said it was like the worst flu you could possibly imagine yeah Christopher cross released a statement saying I'm sorry to report that I am among the growing number of Americans who tested positive for the cove it nineteen virus I'm not in the in the habitat of discussing medical issues on social media but I do so in the hopes this will help other people to understand how serious and how contagious this illness is he does gonna say this is possibly the worst elements I've ever experienced sixty eight years old yes I mean he's he's he's out of the it's not out of the woods and he has had some freaking phenomenal songs I need to see people like Chris Cuomo you know the brother of governor Andrew Cuomo he was on CNN saying he has had the worst night of his life he chipped his tooth from shivering so much and was hallucinating because of the fever the cable came along with covert nineteen thought he talked to his dad right is dead yeah his dad dad he thought he was seeing.

"And I've no idea why owned this Villa Nova t-shirt you didn't even go to Villanova even go there in your conference then stater. No no through. Don't even know anyone who went. There was a thrift shop. I think I stole it from home. My little sister is probably one of her friends. Yeah the way things go on a life's great mysteries. You broke news for the podcast grew. Ju Ju Ju to choose FITTING SIREN. What's going on with the NHL Unemployment has the NHL is temporarily cutting all league office employees. Pay By twenty five percent. This is obviously due to the ongoing corona virus pandemic. The hope I was told by League office employees is that this would prevent them from making any layoffs during this uncertain time. So that's obviously a positive but the sense I got is this comes a day after the New Jersey devils became the first known team in the NHL to cut their employees pay. I know right as I got this deuce out. The Montreal Canadian said they're making massive cuts but laying off sixty percent of their employees. I'd believe there was massive pressure from the club saying. Hey if we're going to do this we need some leadership and we need some guidance in the NHL needs to stand with us and do the same thing and show solidarity and so that's what they did need like you said the Canadians layoff sixty percent of their staff. They have a fund six Million Dollar Assistance Fund that Will Enhance Employment Insurance Benefits Aka unemployment for period of eight weeks. Insuring employees will receive eighty percent of their base salary during this period so essentially a twenty percent salary cut which is sort of almost in line with the NHL did with its employees the devils and the sixers announced that they are also dialing back their salaries pay cuts to employee's is four day workweek. Twenty percent pay cuts For those employees and then also I guess the leadership of those teams are also taken some some pay cuts as well voluntarily voluntarily. This all comes in the aftermath of yesterday's board of Governors. Call us the podcast Tuesday which I don't think like you said it's coincidental. You're going to see more and more teams probably taking more aggressive action. One week after trying to figure out how to pay part time workers at the Rena. We're GONNA see the other side of that coin which is dramatic Salary and workforce reductions as the NHL heads into a period of uncertainty and again after the call. I mean what was communicated there. What's the time line that they're getting? I mean the thing that we heard emerge from it. Yesterday was the idea that we could have games in July and August and potentially play a Stanley Cup finals. September was one of the things disgust so I think when these teams start looking at that calendar saving themselves all right. What do we need to do to get our house in order to not bleed money all over the place as it comes to the three months potentially away from the rink totally and I think you know the problematic part for all of everybody for all of everybody entire world is not knowing how long this is? GonNa last and I think when we start to see moves like this we get a sense that they're starting to listen to the scientists and listen to the doctors and understand. Oh Yeah when we said that thing about. Nhl Players. Getting back into team facilities weeks time that was a little ambitious and probably premature the thing. I'm really curious about is. What are the discussions? Like with regards to what? It's all going to look like when it gets back. And what are the priorities? Is the regular season a priority? It seems like it might be if they're talking about potentially playing games into September that they want to get everybody back on the ice and play a few more games and squeeze out some more revenue from regular season games. Even though you wonder who the hell's going to buy a ticket to a regular season game with the economy being the way it is and if you're if you have a playoff team in your town why on Earth would you buy a regular season ticket. You know you're gonNA save that over the playoffs right so and that quite sure what's going on there and the thing about this regular season stuff that I find kind of troubling. It's quite obvious that in some cases Boston Buffalo being two of them. That teams aren't paying their part time staff as long as the Games haven't been canceled. That's kind of a problem for me like if we're going to diddle around with the idea that we're going to still play regular season games at some point let's costing people money people that probably need that money at this point right now and not have teams just going to be like will three months from now when they finally cancel the game coach. Jack they made a fifty the money right now you know and so the other thing too. Is that if you're someone who has money tied up into hockey tickets and you're saying to yourself boy. I'd like to get that deposit on a sweet back or I'd like to get those couple hundred ducats. I dropped from my family to go to a regular season game at the end of March back. He can't get that money either. Because teams aren't refunding anybody as long as the Games are only paused and the third party ticket companies like STUBHUB and seek. Aren't giving money back as long as the Games are just paused. It's only through cancelation. That refunds are triggered. And so as long as we're in this sort of let's finish out the regular season mode which to me. Logistically is stupid to begin with. Then you're actually withholding money from people that could probably really use it right now given all the uncertainty you know we see the NHL being so hell bent on finishing some part of the season. There are one of the few leagues that were talking about it right when it happened. And now we see when it's just twelve days into this pause and they're already talking about they're already doing cutting employees salaries by twenty five percent of why it is important to them that said they also need to realize that their hamstring so many people like you said and I think this entire thing shedding light on how employers treat their employees. And we're GONNA come out of this a lot wiser and maybe a lot more cynical. It's possible yeah now WANNA be coming out of. This is a question a lot of people are asking and frankly whenever I think of breaking hockey news. There's only one that I go to and that is renowned baseball announcer. Joe Buck who was on. Espn radio owned. The Michael. Kay Show in New York on Monday and dropped this nugget of information on the air. It's funny you know. One of the aforementioned daughters of mine is dating a kid who plays in the NHL To go back to the NHL. And I know that the players have been told that when they come back if they come back it's GonNa be a week of some expedited camp and then they're going to jump right into the postseason And I don't know how the formula works you know in the NBA. I I would. I would hope that the NFL schedule itself isn't Affected but I. It's everything's such an unknown. Nobody can look at you in the eyes and say here's when they're going to start clan again. Nhl Camps would open for a week and then straight into the postseason courtesy of the National Hockey League player. The Joe Books Daughter is dating emily. So if you know anything about Saint Louis a small community and the bucks are saint. Louise people obviously text my friend from Saint Louis being like you know I. I stopped one of the daughters and her instagram's public and I'm going to hold rabbit hole and the other one's private. It must be this girl. I text my friend. Who is she dating? And I call you and I'm like Greg will figure this out I've got people on it. You're like what Christian pitcher kids. 'cause you Fisher from the Arizona cowed. Now listen when we get into work stoppages. I'm a wily veteran of having covered the o-5 lockout and the two thousand twelve lockout. This is when you start getting into my friends a janitor at the arena Easter that he heard kind of stuff and the crazy thing about it. Is that one out of every. Ten of those stories is absolutely true but he did. He did In the NHL and asked. Have you communicated this plan at all to the players in your giant conference calls? There's like one hundred guys in the line and the NHLPA sadly said No. This was not something that was communicated from the Players Association. So either the coyotes players have gone rogue by the way. If you're the coyotes player don't we'll be buying into this minicam playoffs thing. You'd be lobbying hard for the regular season but this information collected by Joe Buck spread about on the ESPN radio airwaves. In New York. Alas not official company line from the NHL Players Association. But we. Emily and I are committed to track down. Every news tip and lead comes our way you know. I A lot of twenty five minutes on Instagram. This morning. For this all right. We'll say this is my first guest here today. I will say the I guess I just want to say one thing in a minute though. I'm getting a lot of questions from friends from random people when the NHL is going to start again what it will look like like that. I think the bottom line is nobody knows not even the NHL. They're going through a bunch of models and some of those models are probably leaking out and being communicated to the Christian fishers of the world. But the truth is we have no idea where this is going to end and we have no idea what it's going to look like and and we come back. We come back to one thing and this will be the mantra on this. Show it all has to do with when people can travel and when people can gather and until. We have clarity on both of those things. We got clarity on anything all right time. Joining us on the line is coach. Doug Tara of the Cornell Women's hockey team and at the time that their season was cancelled cornell was the top ranked team in the country and coach. I just have to ask you. When did this I come on your radar of you know? This is something that could affect your season. How did you get the news? What was it like telling your players where we just finished our. Ecac tournaments on Sunday and then when the star of the week Monday Tuesday we we gave them off and then I think it was maybe Wednesday night when started to see I think it was the. Nba cancelled Their game and were suspending the season and then the next day the Ivy League get suspended All of their sports going forward But at that point we weren't really sure because we were out of ECAC PLAY. There was no more ivy league play so we were waiting to see what was happening with the NC Double A. We only had two weeks left and it was all. Nc Double A. Tournament. Play so Originally you know middle the week on Wednesday. We thought we'd be playing on Saturday with no fans in building and that's how we were proceeding and then Thursday fifteen minutes before we were both to have our team meeting and practice Our Administrator Anita Brenner came in and told me that That the game had been cancelled so we didn't have a whole lot of time before we were going in to meet the team so that was pretty tough conversation going into that practice. What was that conversation like? What was the message you gave them? It was difficult because we weren't really prepared. I mean Probably about an hour earlier I had been meeting with my assistant coaches and we were going through practice and We were planning meeting on penalty. Kill and all of that and then you know we were kind of on edge because he saw a lot of things getting cancelled so you know in the back of our mind renew. It might happen but we also wanted to proceed as if we were playing the game and so really hadn't prepared anything. As far as conversations with our team went so went in and you know tried to as much as possible put a you know a positive spin on it but I said but I said you're probably not going to hear a whole lot of what I have to say right now and also the quite honestly where we're in tears You know and I I said at least we were able to experience most of our season. You know. We really only missed the last two weeks. It's it's the most important two weeks but But we got to have. I'm really special season feed. That was unprecedented for us in Cornell Women's hockey going undefeated and ECAC Regular season And doing things that we'd never accomplished before we had never finished the ranked number one going into the NC Double A. Tournament. So we've had successes here over the fifteen years but We had never gotten to that level. going into the tournament so Tried to point out all the positives that we were able to experience and all the moments that we were able to experience throughout the year and And get in you know and and looking at the spring sports. They weren't even able to to have their season so In some ways we were fortunate so there is some talk in the NCAA about offering eligibility or relief For players in spring sports for seniors. Who GOT THEIR SEASON CANCELLED? And I know there's some discussion about extending that to winter sports as well considering your postseason was cancelled. What's your opinion on that? And do you think that's something that your seniors would want to take of? Yeah we We met Right after About practice as well and The next day and there were starting to be conversations circling that they were going to give an extra year eligibility to the spring sports and An extra year for seniors on the Winter Sports..

"In you're right though it's never like I've and then if it expands beyond that we have seen like and the world championships is interesting because you mentioned the I H F. I sang at fast. So I don't mess up the acronym Via cancelled six tournaments. But they didn't cancel so far the two signature events the senior women's and senior. Men's the men's is in May in Switzerland Switzerland's a country that we see now is being affected. Bill Daley said I can't imagine we would put a mandate on saying guys can't go because all gets NHL employees but it's not NHL sanctioned event talked to some GM saying how would you handle it if you're player wants to go over there like what would your course of action be. Yes I like the the the notion I got from the GM's because I mean this isn't there. You're very strategic. So they lean pretty heavily on with the League recommends so even if the League says look we can't ban players again. This is in our event or whatever we can't make these unilateral decisions if they make a recommendation even if it's like you know no international travel for the employees or whatever that may be that was that was part of the memo that went last week there. Was you know a a portion of talked about the employee travel? I think the GM's are GonNa lean pretty heavily into whatever recommendation from the League. I mean that's you know I don't know what else you do this to other things that can affect the NHL in the short term one we heard about the stick shortage the potential sexual urge when the Bauer factories. Were shut down. Stephen Wine Report of that story. Bill Daley told me that bad has been find. The League was on top of it. It's no longer issue. But what is an issue? Is that sound like the? Nhl is going to go to China next year and they had gun. Preseason games there in two thousand seventeen and twenty eighteen They were going to go last year but couldn't do it because of scheduling arenas and they didn't have anything firm yet. Bill Daley is like now because the virus like it's been really hard to firm plan so that seems unlikely. I'm curious in your opinion. Like what other things are. We not thinking about what this could affect. Yeah I mean that's a great question so he so when I was looking over some of the the you know the memo and some of the League recommendations like the. Cdc is saying you know if it's in your community. Don't have large gatherings you playoff game. A large gather accurate liquid is more large gathering than a sporting events. A practice gathering. Yeah like what? Are you even thinking about that was at the NFL combine last week? And I'm in your. Did you go to prime? I know I would.

"The NHL will have the schedule for you and looking at the standings we were earlier there are some good races I mean that's really not surprising given how even the league is I know it's maybe sort of counter intuitive or something if you just think about the Sabres but metro is really tight one to six specially two to six Washington just a little bit of separation but only four points really good there the Pacific is even better one to five is four points for Vancouver down to Arizona though those teams in both cases just a bad week would put them into into some trouble so what I'm you know good for them I guess right having their fun Sabres are ten out then they still do have again just to say right they still do have the schedule looking favorable with this game tonight Columbus again we just be auto was drawn on the auto was coming up Pittsburgh in Winnipeg at six games before the trade deadline which is the twenty fourth so a week from Monday less than two weeks away now and we've been all over it they have a pretty good pile of unrestricted free agents to be players that may not have much or any trade value but I think a guy like Larson maybe also Gergen sins or both I think they both come in under two million Bucks a year that that cap stuff is pro rated for what's left in the season it's about a third at this point it'll be less by the deadline those should not be players the teams have to tough of a time making work financially and I think they both have value especially Larsen Larsen has just kind of been stuck in this role where the team he plays on here year after year can't really score and sometimes he's put in positions where it might look like they need that from him but really not the player is on balance Larson I think is a good depth bad for a good team and so if the Sabres were so inclined I think the trade there makes sense and I might expect it even depending on what the each sea of sea being the future with each other and then where it gets interesting is when you start to look at guys who are not on restricted free agents because those are kind of the easy ones for a team likely to miss the playoffs rated Montour is interesting for this an RFA course wrist the line is always interesting for this but that's he's got years that a bomb at over five million dollars and you know you have the usual sort of consternation about his play I guess at least that I sort of subscribe to can a team make that work this late in the game salary cap wise with the Sabres could not take on a player with that kind of salary without moving even more than that off their team and of course Reinhardt I see of course because we've talked about it so often it's not something that I would assume at all with the Sabres are really pondering but you have a team that's been losing for years and I just think on that could in that kind of a situation you could justify almost anything and that's what really came to pass with Ryan o'reilly Reilly gave a press conference that kind of so everybody's minds racing about his future and I think maybe the Sabres panicked and they also didn't really want to pay if you look at the timing of it all they had to get a bonus coming he was traded the day before that money would have been do so very interesting in tough circumstances you know really make up leave a bad taste in miles about Riley leaving the sabers of course he's gone on to great success with the cop in the Conn Smythe trophy last year with the blue so I just think when you have a team that's been losing like this I'm I'm reluctant to rule out anything when it comes to trade talk about core players I don't know I don't I think I would not be happy probably hang up what the rest of it looked like before if Reinhardt were to be moved but they just don't want to rule it out ray deadline again Monday the twenty fourth the Sabres should be getting a couple of forwards back in the coming days but not by tonight we have shows coming up shortly here from the locker room will hear what how he looks at his status you're coming back from injury first though Jimmy V. C. who has got its eight goals some time on the top line over twenty five minutes of ice time in the game on Sunday he Reinhardt Michael just off the charts we came to playing time in that game here's the seat with Britain Wilson well Jimmy obviously was a tough loss on Sunday but how do you guys look to bounce.

"Had to have the NHL and have college football in the of the NFL all of that in full flight taz is it a scenario now are your for your item so we said let's see what exactly when the NBA starts the game more of a center stage look right right maybe it's a case that you know the the year of the popularity will rise here or or the ratings will rise across the association maybe the maybe that is indeed the case I I don't know that answer but I I will say that you know when you look at it I do know number of of my friends have had a hard time getting in to lead this year and get into the association and get fired up about it and they don't really have a great tangible reason as to as to why they just tell yeah yeah you know what what we'll see exactly what happened maybe it's the team that there's no great team that you have to chase maybe that's the reason why but I do think it could work for them in the end task because I do believe this our when you get to the NBA playoffs as much as right now you see the ratings are bad if you get to the NBA playoffs at wide open as it appears it's going to be that's going to work for the league I guess you're gonna any it because you're gonna be able instead of looking at like four five teams that could maybe win the NBA championship per couple years was to write it was the cavs with lebron and it was the gold state warriors those are the only two teams that you look at inside those the only two teams are going to championship if your probably will run down a list of seven eight nine teams that could win an NBA title of everything goes right when you get to the NBA playoffs and I do think for the league that'll work for right you know I do I think once we get later into the year like you said towards the post season the numbers of go up and and it's also for the hard core NBA fan that's maybe listen was saying in the thing I've got one that's going on what what are these guys is just correct the number we all correct the ratings are down but this is not the fright was this isn't a new trend I mean it just seems to be kind to be getting a little bit worse each year that goes by like meaning that early in the year numbers are down but it does seem like it's getting worse as more time goes by right it builds up all meant to be season does go along but want to hear from you at eight five five two one two four C. B. S. eight five five two one two four two two seven are you concerned about the ratings being down for ESPN TNT you would you be concerned if your Adam silver the NBA commissioner in terms of where the league is right now to begin the year you sad it's not that big of a deal when I hear from you eight five five two one two four two two seven eight five five two one two four C.
