"Games in Minneapolis. Stay tuned Guys hate number four. Sharks and Jose Sharks had a busy trade deadline, shedding five players, not part of their future, picking up minor league goaltending depth and acquiring three draft choices, Murph over the next two drafts, But then they went out and they looked awfully flat Last night. They stunk it up against the Ducks. Down in Anaheim. They copped up three first period goals, and that's really all the ducks needed down there. The Sharks lose a game 40 kind of asleep. We're kind of like the mirror image of the Giants game last night, the Sharks in the NHL awfully quiet as well. All right. Polly number three sports story. Well, the Oakland A's we gave up on him at 11 in seven. And you know, I found a little something there after their two in Houston. They got their third straight yesterday 9 to 5 over Arizona in Phoenix, so they're not dead. The A's a dead yet now. Unfortunately, for those of us who enjoy.

COVID-19 outbreak pauses Vancouver Canucks' season

"Elliott firstly before we do anything on this podcast. Let's just all send our best to everyone in the vancouver canucks organization. Everybody around the nhl feels awful at what the vancouver canucks are going through right now and elliott as we tape this podcast record this podcast On a sunday evening. What is the very latest with this ongoing situation. Well look the covert list expanded again. On sunday night sixteen players listed on it. And you know we should mention that just because you're on it doesn't mean you have it but one of the things that the nhl has basically assumed here is that it's going to go through everyone and even if it doesn't and you hope it doesn't you automatically assume it does and that's the way they look at it when it was going through dallas. That's the way they looked at it. When was going through buffalo. And you know there's been some debate about white symptoms. That players did or didn't have. I'm not getting into that. I think that's crazy. I think that what we have here is that we know it's the variant The brazilian variant. We know there's a player jas horlock who had covert originally last march and now has it again. So there's a lot of things to be concerned about here. We know that not everybody had symptoms. We know that some had symptoms more severe than others and that the ones who did have the severe symptoms. Unfortunately they went through an awful lot. Like basically what i've heard. Is that the roughest outbreak in terms. Of what the players went through generally considered to be buffalo's i think for those players who did have symptoms. This one has been considered rougher than that

Let's drop fuck off. Due to covid-19. Keep why don't you tell us about the Canadians? Sure the Canadians have Paul Byron and Brendan Gallagher as their alternate captains, but instead of an a I use an e and the Canadians had quite the offseason. That's right. Why don't you tell us about the Leafs? Sure the Leafs play for Toronto after five hundred years without a ring. John Todd bars gave them one in the bubble. When his Puck hit the post in the bubble and the Leafs had quite the offseason. That's right. Why don't you tell us about the Jets? Sure the Jets have already been eliminated from the playoffs to reduce travel and the Jets had quite the offseason. That's right. Why don't you tell us about the Flames? Sure the Flames play in call Gary which is what the referees do offer the sponsors do when they have a question about something. And the Flames had quite the offseason. That's right. Why don't you tell us about the Oilers? Sure boiler. I barely know her the Oilers have the best player in the world. They also have Conor McGregor and the Oilers had quite the offseason. That's right. Why don't you tell us about the Senators? Sure. The Senators are frickin nasty and are going to make some real noise this year and the Senators had quite the offseason age. Nope didn't need to now it's time for who has the best shirts off. Who has the best shirts in the NHL I think goalies have the best shirts because they're nice and big and can fit all of their pads this year. The NHL is doing reverse shirts to reduce travel. Now. Let's have our friend Jeff read one of the most important rules of NHL. Rule 9.6 helmets all players shall wear a helmet of design material and construction approved by the league while participating in the game either on the playing surface pro players or penalty benches a player on the ice whose helmet comes off during the play shall be assessed on minor penalty. If he does not exit the playing surface or retrieve and replace his helmet properly on his head with or without his chin strap fastened within a reasonable period of time it is reasonable if a player who is making a play on the puck or who is in the vicinity of the puck and engaged in the play at the time his helmet comes off takes the opportunity to complete the play before either exiting the ice or retrieving and replacing his helmet if the player returns to his Players Bench to be substituted for he may only return to the ice during play off the helmet with the chinstrap properly fastened no player May exit the penalty bench during play without a helmet with the chinstrap properly fastened should he do so the play shall be Soft ones. This team has gained control of the puck and a minor penalty shall be assessed to the offending player a player who intentionally removes an opponent's helmet during play. She'll be assessed a minor penalty for roughing off police. See rule 51. When a goalkeeper has lost his helmet and or face mask and his team has control of the puck Place. She'll be stopped immediately to allow the goalkeeper the opportunity to regain his helmet and or face masks when they using team has control of the puck place. You'll only be stopped if there's no immediate and impending scoring opportunity this stoppage of play must be made by the referee when play is stopped because the goalkeeper has lost his helmet and or face masks the ensuing Faceoff shall take place at one of the defending teams End Zone Faceoff spots. When a goalkeeper deliberately removes his helmet and or face mask in order to scare us a stoppage of Play the song. Play as outlined above and assess the goalkeeper a minor penalty for delay of game if the goalkeeper deliberately removes his helmet and or face masks when the opposing team is on a breakaway the referee Shayla ward off a shot to the non-offending team and the shot shall be taken by the player last in possession of the puck if the goalkeeper deliberately removed his helmet and or face mask during the course of a penalty shot or shoot out of town. The referee shall award a goal to the not offending team now. Let's talk about the West. Tell us about the Ducks. Quack quack quack quack and the Ducks had quite the offseason. That's right. Tell us about the coyotes the coyotes go back. And the coyotes had quite the offseason. That's right. Tell us about the Avalanche. The Avalanche goes down here and the Avalanche had quite the offseason. That's right. "What's the very latest. Like i know this is very fluid and changing and what you say now is not going to be true five minutes from now but his as best you're able to to grab and try to grasp some water in your hand and not let it slip through your fingers. Where are we at. I think we're in the grinding stage. There grinding away at the protocols there grinding away at the schedule there. Grinding away at the setup the divisions temporary realignment there grinding away at the transition rules. All of this stuff and you know basically people have been telling me it's endless. Zoom calls trying to figure it out and the players in the league decided that they're not going to touch their ask ro. They said they weren't doing that. But in order to to a greater deferments they said we consider certain things one was not this upcoming season but next season which is twenty one twenty two extra five hundred thousand dollars on the cap. Another five hundred thousand a year later and the league wasn't willing to go for that. I know they suggested compliance buyouts but as long as the players didn't have to pay for them and the league wasn't going for that. I think that one thing that also had been talked about was could individual players. Say yes we're willing to defer even if the whole group didn't agree to it but that was way too complicated and it didn't go anywhere so they didn't go anywhere on the financials and now they're you know they're grinding away. All the other stuff taxi squad. How big the is going to be if the ross twenty five people. How does that affect the cab house. The realignment gonna work first. Minnesota was in the pacific and then saint. Louis was in the pacific. Minnesota was out and then they were talking about saint louis and minnesota going to the pacific and dallas going into the central division. Apparently dallas has said. You know we'll do whatever but they laugh the pacific a few years ago to get back into that that central time zone so they're happy <hes>. With doing that. I know the players were hoping to vote end of the weekend maybe beginning of next week and the league sort of middle towards end of next week. I think that's what everyone's kind of aiming for so as you mentioned off the top. They're the latin packing that you mentioned that they're not touching the financial some conversation about it. And will you do this if we do that. But ultimately that remains the same and they move onto the return to play. All the protocols involve is this the rare case. And we'll do this all under the umbrella of the current incarnation of this. Nhl goes back to. Oh four zero. Five and bob good now and the salary cap etcetera. Is this the first case that we've seen where the nhl pa dug in its heels. Didn't give in didn't budge and one. Here's why i'm not giving you a yes sooner or later. This bill is going to get paid. I think this generation of players could say yes we won. We stood strong. We agreed to a deal. We didn't move from the deal. Though thing that the commissioner is right about from what he said publicly is that it's a fifty fifty deal yup and at some point in time the bill has to be paid and the biggest issue. The owners have is cash flow. This is why some of them are really upset. Cash flow is going to be down in the league. Because there's going to be no fans in the building. This year will not be fifty fifty. It's going to tip towards the players. Probably the most ever. It's going to tip towards the players and the escrow that's going to be collected is in no way going to be equal what's going to be owed. Yup it's possible. After this year the players are gonna. Oh the owners more than a billion dollars as a matter of fact depending on who you locked talk to. It's not just possible. It's likely i'm just being careful. 'cause i'm getting my math from everywhere else and i haven't sat down and done it myself. But it's likely that they're going to owe them more than a billion dollars and the problem. Is that the schedule of that. Pay is slower than the owners would like. So there's gonna be some cash flow issues so they're unhappy but what it means is. Is that the cap is not going to go up. Maybe for the entirety of this. Cba yup so that affects the players and the other thing is at some point in time. This money is going to become do. And what's that going to mean like their owners right now. Who are saying their concern. Is that this six year deal. There's a time where it gets triggered to seventh year if the losses are at a certain amount and they will be so after seven years the players are still gonna hold the owners money and that's going to become part of the next cba and what that's gonna mean and this might send us all into retirement. Jeff is that six or seven years from now there's gonna be one hell of being negotiated all because the owners are gonna come into. Its saying you owe us hundreds of millions of dollars and the players are going to say well we think part of it. Some of that should be forgiven worried about this. This is a long term thing. But i can tell you the owners are thinking about it now and the league is thinking about it now so the only reason. I say it's not unequivocal. Yes for the players is that there are some players playing now who are going to be hugely affected by this. What was the line that you used on me on hockey central. Oh this is <hes>. Travis ajax sang jack hughes. Yeah you're going to pick up this bill and that's definitely part of this so i think the current players. It's a win the guys who won't be playing in six or seven years. It's a win but the guys who will be it's not a win historically though is just as an aside. I mean bob. Good no talked about this in the four. Oh five negotiation salary caps always pit player versus player. Because you define a pie. Everyone fights for their piece of it so it shouldn't come to any surprise that again. This is the players association. Saying you know what if anyone's going to get stuck with the bill here. It's going to be the kids. The rookies amongst all the players that are capped. And everybody is the rookies triple capped. You know there's a team salary cap. There's an individual players salary cap and there's a rookie salary cap as well. This is the history. This is the history of <hes>. Of the of the nhl or and happens in in every sport is always the guys that are coming in like. Listen shane right. Hasn't played a single game in the nhl. He's affected by this decision. Yes absolutely and you know if go back. Fifteen years. The highest paid players in the nba or the picks glen robinson number one. Pick think nine hundred nine ninety five sixty nine million and the people in the league were like we're stopping this. The veterans are said. This is crazy so they came up with the nba rookie salary cap. You look at the nfl. The quarterback so used to be taken to the top of the draft. Anybody got taken to the top of the draft huge deals. The veterans said. We're putting a stop to this and they did. That's the way it works and it's not just like that in sports there's unions all over the world that do this kind of thing they take care of the current worker at the expense of the future. One it's not unusual and that's exactly what happened here sooner or later. This bill is going to become do okay so you talked about how this to the grind time right now in the nhl in the players association trying to get this thing hammered outs <hes>. I'm curious about a couple of things here on vaccines in a second <hes>. But in the summer players were allowed to opt out. Now is a much different time. We didn't know as much about covid. Nineteen as we do now. We knew the we are heading into unknown. But was the bubble entire landscape. Can we just didn't know there were questions. And there were certain risks as some players opted out in. Everyone said no problem we understand. How much is opt out an issue right now boy. That's a great question. I think we could see some retirements. Yep i think the other thing is how comfortable do some people feel like playing if you watch the news and don't live in a cave or read the news. We are two or three months away from the vaccine. starting to have a real positive effect on society. We probably won't have full fans until next season. Dr fauci said a week ago. The next league to begin its season with full fans will likely be the nfl in september but were getting closer however these next two months. They're going to be ugly painful

"Yourself by taking a virtual walk around at many don't see. This is a CBC podcast. Back Old. School. Six on Monday, the bubble is about to burst on the longest NHL hockey season end tonight, or Wednesday with the awarding of the Stanley Cup in normal times remember those normal times a new NHL season would just be starting. What would that actually look like? We'll get to that in a moment but first, let's deal with what the League has just accomplished. It's a lot emily. Kaplan is the national NHL reporter for ESPN emily good. Morning. Good morning, how's it going? There were great predictions at the beginning of this bubble season that this was going to be a disaster in the making the playoffs would fall. Apart of this is going to work there will be positive covid nineteen cases, and there will be no Stanley. Cup handed out. Those were all proven wrong. Are You surprised? You know I am to an extent. I do think that the NHL made a series of great decisions throughout all of this one of the things Gary Bettman and his two Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly did was wait until the last moment to decide planning logistics for this tournament and that allowed them to it. I'm from the United States specifically Las Vegas where they wanted to go, and there's a high incident rate to. Canadian. Cities but they really did a great job in consulting with infectious disease experts and local government officials to make sure This was a safe environment for players and by being a safe environment, I mean, essentially this was we talk about it being a bubble. It was a very tight bubble describe for people who haven't been paying attention. What kind of environment players were living in what you would see from the outside Yeah, so there's two bubbles that were going on initially one was in Toronto the other was an Ed Minton and they pretty much lived and existed in the middle of the cities around the ice rink and what the NHL did was established fencing and security around areas and each of the cities that included not only the ice arenas that they were playing in but hotels. One or two restaurants and that's about it. In Toronto's bubble, you know the my major league soccer field was included and that was some area for players to walk around But here in Edmonton where now the tournament is consolidated the hotels are connected to the arena and there's a days players don't even have to go outside and don't see the sun or breathe fresh air. With the number of players what life in the bubble was like how did they describe their experiences? you know I think unequivocally, players say they felt safe They felt like the safety measures in place were good There's no place that they felt You know more comfortable in this global pandemic Then in the bubble that said when it came to fund then amenities they felt like the NHL over promised a bit on what the experience. would be like there are several gripes from the players That were not as advertised weather excursions they could go on but the biggest gripe that players have was that they felt misled about their families being able to join them and largely that wasn't able to be true. One of them described life in the bubble is a bit like being in a prison. Yeah. There's an area in the Vinton bubble that players began referring to the prison yard and I mentioned that the hotel and arena are connected. So players don't have to go outside, but there is a courtyard outside however it's a cement courtyard and it features several picnic tables that are socially distanced that black fencing around it, some spotlights, and there's the Tim. hortons truck a food truck that players can go to look. At photos of this area and I have, and this is supposed to be the common areas where players hang out If he does look like a prison yard, you mentioned photos and we know a little bit of what these players are doing because as tends to happen on social media, there were pictures that were shared of some of the players who were partying was that an anomaly or was life in the bubble one big party. You know it really wasn't You know there was definitely some alcohol to be had There was bars included the bubble. These are professional athletes. They're adults sometimes that's the way they choose to unwind. They've also been apart for five months and it kind of felt like a reunion like I said, they were isolated from the fair families. All they had was each other But and when it came down to, this is a tournament and they were all looking to win the Stanley Cup and players players told me that while there was alcohol president there was we'd present that was a go to for a lot of guys to be able to fall asleep they really you know doing that kind of stuff for recovery especially, the we'd dummies. A guys would take it after a game to make sure that they could fall asleep at one am and get eight hours of sleep instead of maybe staying up four or five am and dealing with and SOM- in other factors like that. Those lovely moment in this had was out of the bubble, the people perhaps on social media. Last week John Merrill Defenseman of the Vegas Golden Knights. The team got out of the playoffs he got to go home after almost two months away stuck in the bubble. And he and his wife Jess surprised their young daughters when he got home. was. Girls. Surprise ever or what? All over he cried. But. Did you win no, I'm home. He's hiding behind the garage door as the garage door opens and they come running in you talked about being disconnected from their families. How much did that way on Clare's? Wait a lot players going into the tournament we're told by the conference final round, their family members would be able to join them but once they got to the tournament, they felt like that promise wasn't kept and the NHL and NHLPA kept moving the goalposts and ultimately it came down to an issue with the Canadian government which did not I offer an exemption for it's fourteen day federal quarantine like it did for the players but the players felt like the NHL NHLPA which organizes tournament kind of misled them through the process wasn't transparency the process and they end didn't fight for their. Families to be a part of this and that was really frustrating for them because they mentioned there's so many factors that were uncertain stressful and an isolating throughout all of this to be told that your family's conjoined you at some point and that had taken away in the middle of it That's really difficult. We just have a minute or so left what happens now I mean, can they do an entire season? Nobody knows whether fans will ever be allowed back into stadiums in you know in the next year or two? Can the League do an entire season in a bubble or bubbles like this? No, it can't and there's a couple different factors why one it's expensive to there's going to be pushed back from players. Their experience wasn't exactly ideal and they're gonNA, want certain things to be amended I. DO BELIEVE THE NHL is GonNa take the same approach that they took with a return to play and wait till the last minute possible to make a decision next season because the world in reality around us is changing so fast but as of now, Gary Bettman the Commissioner has said December start date January as possible we'll see just how late it slips. The players you.

"It. Like I love the colors I love you collars look great. The colors are great. The logo looks great. I can get used to crack in and the one. You're think is a good one. It is different. It is distinct and the one expectation that I think we all have a bow. Seattle at this point is that everything they do is going to be new is going to be progressive is gonNA surprise a lot of people whether it is the name which is very nontraditional, whether it's the first you know green arena climate pledge arena. Everything they do is going to be different. We expect that they're hiring policies progressive the way that they are going to do business as progressive I. Just hope that it doesn't stop now I. Don't think that it does but what does do Elliot selfishly since I have conceded sasquatch. Bang the drum for different colored ice for Seattle Oh my God. I knew you're GONNA. All all our producer I wrote down actually I got to tell you I wrote down. When does jeff come up with the different colored? Ice Oh my God yeah. I'm telling. Pretty, it'd be this early. It will put it this way Jeff. If one team's going to do it, it's going to be this one well. They WANNA. They're promoting. They have the green arena, so do green ice here you go. Here's your chance. I'd love to see if the NHL allows this you know. It reminds me a lot of the raptors. When the raptors came in new, there were a lot of people didn't like raptors and I remember. John Bits of doing an interview on the Fan with Bob McCowan and John. biddle said Bob. What do you think of the name and he goes Bob? Said I hate it and John biddle said good. That means that you're not in our target audience so I! Don't care what you think about it. And the other thing, too, is you talk about the team? Look at their twitter feed now that we have a name or strategizing all the ways to draft your favorite player. Yeah, like there are people in the league. Telling me I'm sick of these guys already sold. The rivalries are building. Yes, rivalries are building so the other two Jeff I I'd heard was. I heard the amount of meetings over the small details were unreal. The color of the is how many is you know I didn't realize I saw the video. When you look at the logo, the S has tentacle through it. like that black line is the tentacle of the cracking, and there was one person who told me that They weren't so sure about this until they saw that video and I have to say identify with that. When I saw the video and saw that that's what that black line was supposed to be. I thought that was really cool. What are the things about the whole reveal by? Seattle is the security around at the secrecy around. It the lack of leaks. I thought for sure that by the morning of the announcement it would be out there and confirmed by somebody I'll tell you the one thing that I learned from one of maybe if not my favorite movie of all time jaws. Is this Don't show the shark. Secret that movie is they don't show the shark until much later on. Don't show the shark and the one thing that Seattle did in this entire process is. They didn't show the shark like sure. There was a temptation there to extend the metaphor. Show the shark, but they didn't do it. Even in that video as everybody is going through this pruder's style frame by frame by frame, trying to look for clues I gotta give it to Seattle Man. They didn't show the shark at all. One of the big conversations I heard after they decided the name was. What's the Mascot GonNa look like. Well and that's when you get the rivalry about DETROIT WITH DETROIT. Yes, it looks too much like a traditional octopus. It won't. There's no way it will. No of course not, and they also said like the Jersey, the crack and has to look. Not like a WIMP, it can't be a wimpy cracking I. Don't know enough about mythological creatures. I'm not sure there can be a wimpy cracking. Does it exist I? Doubt it every movie I've ever mccracken. They're pretty nasty, but they definitely talk about that. We can't have a soft cracking. So the jerseys were revealed the branding is revealed and Tim Leiweke, who's a CEO of the Oak View Group was on hockey central with us. The day of the announcement and he let something slide. Let something slip. That was pretty interesting. We spent more time going back and look at the Metropolitans. In the fact, they won the Stanley cow, so we spend a lot of time looking at that history and tradition. I won't spill all the beans, but I'll tell you. There's a third and Fourth Jersey coming. Eventually wore on her that legacy in that tradition. Hundred Seventeen team. Of course when the won the Stanley Cup I would imagine that if they're winking at history that hard, and I think that they will. That will probably see Abana raising on opening night while you're going to do something special rate. I think they'll do a number of the special things on opening night I would imagine that would be one of them. Yes, and you know a nice touch too here. We are here here. He goes, SEATTLE. Here's here's a million ideas here on this podcast. HAP Holmes was the goaltender for that Seattle team homes played on a number of Stanley Cup, champions real good goaltender born in Aurora in the Aurora Sports Hall of Fame, died relatively young I think it is early fifties in Florida, but he wore a baseball cap. I think it might have been the first goaltender in the NHL to ever wear a baseball cap. It would be nice if they did something with HAP Holmes and abate. I don't know what it is I'm just doing this off the top of my head, but if someone is wearing a hap-. Maybe it's whoever the goaltender is for. The opening ceremony wears a HAP, Holmes baseball hat that would be a nice touch for the. Hockey nerd like me out there. WHO DIDN'T GET SASQUATCH well? One thing I looked up was to Seattle have any retired numbers and they don't. Remember when Ottawa came in had an old retired number. Frank Finnegan, and they honored it. But Seattle, I can't sense that they do. Okay, so now. Seattle's job is to make this team to create this team out of nothing not unlike what Vegas went through most recently. Do. They have a friend in the flat Cap Seattle All I. We talked about this last week. I, think they're a huge winner. In the new CBA their job just became. If easier is the right word, but I they gain some real advantages and. A few teams have said that to me that the mistakes Vegas they were going to avoid them now. Circumstances have dictated that someone's going to have to make them, and it's a huge advantage for them. There's no question from a financial point of view Elliott. We just mentioned the flat cap here second ago. Given the economic realities NHL NHL is going through now, and we'll go through in the next couple of seasons I know. I opened up by saying how important is Seattle team, but I'll ask it again from an economic point of view to this team, not just become where the more important teams in the NHL team thirty two new infusion of money. Well there's no question that that's true and new infusion of enthusiasm to the Batman, and daily made it very clear and their negotiations with the players that ownership cash flow was very important. They got expansion money that players don't share in from Vegas and there were some owners who thought they didn't get enough. In terms of the system stuff, edgy arbitration that they wanted, but one of the things they could be sold on was that they've expansion money coming in, and that's their win, and that's cash, so there's no doubt that Seattle's big for a lot of reasons, and the other thing too is even before this. There were people who were predicting. Predicting that Seattle would be a top ten revenue team in the NHL. They're gonNA need that. They're merchants already hot negative. That's one of the reasons. It didn't get out because it's not ready at right me, you can order stuff, but I learned through this process that one of the ways that logos and names get leaked Jeff is that you have to share them with vendors or you presale them to vendors and things like that. They didn't do it this time. They didn't do it this time day. Kept it all close Alright talk, congratulations, seattle you now have a name in the NHL has team number thirty, two, welcome thirty one..

"Only one thing is made me happier this week than that. That is what's a you can replace laid on the line with Lyle old-line. Omega, that's so annoying by try of Lyell road land, and telling you man, you will never hear that song by triumph the same way again. That's true lyle. Okay here we go. All right quick shift edition of. The podcast we're going to talk to Steve Mayor the chief content officer of the NHL, but first these story of the week the Seattle thirty two's have a name. They are the Seattle cracking before we drill down and getting some of the. Pacific says a Sandy Atlantic about this. How important was the events of this week for Seattle for the NHL? Like how big a deal is this for the League? It's a huge deal and first of all. It was a fun topic Jeff. Life is hard for people right now. And that was a fun couple of hours. The reveal the video, the look at the Jersey. The name like whether people like the name or didn't like it. They were kind of laughing like Whoa. That's really off the board and I know you don't like it. Because of the nicknames that can come from it, but I love it. It's different. It's different for hockey. It's a step out of the. The normal, it's bold. It's it's a change. It's a try it something new, and I think hockey badly needs that. There were a couple of interesting things I've found out in some conversations number one when they were talking about the Jersey with the people from Adidas one of the things they were saying is we have to imagine what it would look like to lift the Stanley Cup? In this Jersey we can't think that it's going to. To look terrible to lift the Stanley Cup in this Jersey and I liked the Jersey. I liked that way of thinking i. think that's very big. The other I heard that was interesting, was that they chose the name crack and I, and then they went about the identity, the logo and the Jersey and the like the story line of the cracking, and there were some people who heard the name and they were like, are you? You, sure about this, is this really a good idea? And then they started to see the logo and the identity behind it, and they bought in and a lot of times when expansion teams come in. They won't reveal the name the logo end the Jersey at the same time they'll do maybe name and logo at once and Jersey later. This was a win because they did all three at once and I think that's sold people. I think they had to do it that way. And I I think you're right and to the point like we've talked about before I, wanted sasquatch. Works on a whole lot of levels, but again as I pointed out on this podcast before I've realized, and I've been dragged kicking and screaming into this realization that not everything is for me, and that's okay now. I don't want to I gotTa WanNa shoot an Arrow and then paint a circle around it after it lands I. Don't WanNa. Be That Guy Oh. Yeah I, liked it all along cracking his great. Oh a homerun tape measure, but at that reveal. I didn't hate.

"There's GonNa be a rethinking of a lot of this stuff based on what happened the trade deadline because we've only seen ten games dylan. Mellow in Winnipeg like we've only seen like what like ten games of Ilya Kovalchuk with capitals it's it's incredible to try to wrap your brain around what these teams will actually look like not only the mysteries of what shape the guys are in coming back, but also the mysteries of how these pieces fit. Because we don't even know, we didn't even get a good run with them. In some of these cases, it's GONNA. Be Great. This seeming everybody can stay healthy. I guess last night. Lastly, how do you feel about the sort of the moral implications of return to play during global pandemic? Oh, boy you know the players talked you. I'm basically taking my my thought process from them as a seems to be at some point, you've got to trust the medical people, and as long as that's happening, and as long as it seems as though the NHL is being really quite thorough, based on the documentation and everything on on the protocol at these guys are going to be following You know power to them I. I do have concern I'm going to be one of the last guys back in restaurants I promise you that Greg but The NHL seems to be doing the best. It's a can, and that's all we can offer I. let everybody know where they can find your stuff. Well of course, yeah, I'm Murata. Passion it's at the athletic dot. But I gotTA. Tell you like. It isn't important award because it does put the spotlight on guys that struggled through things to keep playing this game and inspire others. and to me top of the ballot. This year is Bobby Ryan I. Mean I think of anybody who? In life beyond this season has gone through as much as Bobby Ryan has gone through thrived played through it. And as dealt with some demons this year, and trying to get some help for substance abuse, and then comes back and has one of the quintessential moments of the season. where? He gets that ovation after the hat trick. He stopped my ballot and wouldn't be surprised if he's not top of the ballot for other people. As far as the rest of the ballot, we shall see the joy of doing this have got some time to mull it over. Break down the numbers and listen to people that are exponentially smarter than me. "There are certain issues where you know. He certainly on the right side of it, but he's got that complicated. Pass and I. Don't think jets fandom is a monolith I think you're gonNA find people on all sides of that, who so may never forgive cane, and some may see him as a leader right now. I've been guilty of. As anybody and tried to make Winnipeg Santa Monolithic at times and dealing with some of these issues in the past, so it's a very good point. All right moving onto the aforementioned trivial issues. At the heart, the heart trophy I wanted to have you on specifically, because we've been talking about the Hart Trophy on this episode, we've been talking about our air and we've been talking about Nathan. Mackinnon and we've been talking about the on dry settled but Winnipeg. Jets have maybe one of the more complicated candidate Ceram VP. Depending on what your mileages for goalies winning MVP in Halibut. So, where do you stand on on his candidacy? Sell me on it or tell me why we should stay away from him as a candidate for MVP. Well I think the only reason to stay away from. It would be You know a discomfort with goaltenders winning the award or perhaps you personal attachment to the cases for pr or even dry Seidel but in terms of how unique goaltending it as a position within the NHL, great teams can be swamped by poor goaltending. Average teams can go. All the way of goaltending gets hot. It might be a little bit unfair to consider this, but goaltenders are the most important position of the game in terms. Terms of contributing value wins above replacement all those sorts of things, and then you get to the season, the Connor Hellebuyck had where he's stopping an incredible amount of shot volume, an incredible amount of shot quality. Nobody gave up on expected goals than the Winnipeg jets did this year their bottom five by shots scoring chances all of those things well, and if you're outside of your organization, looking in, you think okay well. You know they've got those star forward. There's a lot of things that you might like the. The defense might be suspect, but you know they're right on that playoff bubble all year long. That's probably what you expect. The truth is corner. Halibut was shelled this year. And if you ask folks in the organization about what went well, answer number one is always con. Hello Book I think. There's a case to be made that. He is the reason when it takes in that nine seat. He's the reason they have a shot at the playoffs at all and the more that you focus on Winnipeg's own zone. Zone I I I'm not sure there's a more valuable 'cause in the NHL in terms of on ice performance, then putting a team on your back and getting them into the playoffs. That's an incredible threshold for me based on what he has to face, and the thing that I always find interesting about his candidacy Because occasionally you Kinda veer off into the narrative aspects of these candidates. Rate is the idea that what like Winnipeg lost? What was it four out of six defencemen coming into the season Real good one real good one, Druba. So you you look at that as well and and what he was playing behind in, it's it's. It's stunning again this season that he had. Absolutely I. Mean True for sure Tuba and Morrissey were Winnipeg's, you know matchup ready pair throughout lassie's and the year before when Winnipeg beat Nashville seven games. Handled Johansen Forsberg and Arvidsson which is their most dangerous line so peak winnipeg involves Morrissey and true playing important minutes Morrissey goes from trueba all that kind of chemistry with down to Tucker. Pool Man, who's mostly been in the NHL or injured for the last couple of seasons, but that's drop and suddenly there's an entire matchup brady pairing. That's Kinda struggling. Neil comes in. That's good. Good but Winnipeg Losers Dustin Buffalo into what's going on Tyler Myers is gone. Bench had begun to take on a bigger role as things have gone as well and so credit to the jets and their attitude, and the amount of pain and shot blocked all those things that the jets defenseman Lucas Visa, an Anthony Potato and some of the newer faces typically further down the depth. Depth chart pushed into some pretty heavy duty in Winnipeg. Credit them. That doesn't change the amount of work. The Corner Halibut had the amount of zone time in Winnipeg's and whether that's on the PK whether that's even strength, the amount of shots from right between those dots in the center slot Miss Coverage. These things happen and Connor halibut ability. He led the NHL by a country. Country Mile in goal saved above expectations based on shot quality, and so credit to the team i. mean the attitude is good inside the room. Things are right, but That doesn't change the amount of pucks yet to stop. Yeah, it's fascinating. Is there another word that you've got your eye on? That's you're you're sort of interested in how it's going to all play out. the two and I'm sworn in I'll defer to you on which one of these is more compelling, but for me Romeo sees quest for the Norris because I. I know some folks don't think of him as premier defender, but his impact was massive and then also the selke where you know I think there's an argument for less heralded players like an Anthony Sallee to be near the top of the selke voting, but then you've got old stalwarts like ea and and Burger on as well mark stones. Always you know close in in that group as well and I think that's one in both cases where a person's interpretation of what the award is supposed to be often dictates how people vote. Yeah unless your interpretation is that it's supposed to be Patrice burs. Ron's every year then. A Gray area what that? Looks like I. Agree I think both I think all I think out of. Outside of the VEZINA. Every word is up for grabs. The Jack Items to me is really fascinating in the sense that I mean to me I. Think we know with the work he did in Philadelphia should be a little bit head and shoulders above, but you could make the argument for a lot of other guys to for that award as well It's a it's a fascinating ballot up and down outside of the Vesna. Imagine the GM's are gonNA. SCREW UP! But you're right on the Selke like I think Sarah's got the numbers. I think there's going to be one of those. Katrina is now being I. think framed in that drew doughty sense of. Here's the guy. We preordained a win it this year, but maybe he's not the best defensive guy, but maybe we should give it to him. Anyway, you know. When won the Norris? Even worse. Yeah and that's sometimes how these things work out. Man especially on the defensive end where everybody like you said has their own different interpretation. Last thing the the Winnipeg Calgary matchup. We talked to Cam Talbot on the PODCAST. Recently about what a bummer it's going to be to have this playoff series between these two teams played in a vacuum. It's hard to imagine what this playoff series looks like without the Sea of red without the white out. How do you see this playing out like what what do you? What do you think about Winnipeg's chances against this flames team? Oh I think it's pretty much right down the middle in terms of You know I'd say this is GonNa. Be a compelling one. A coin flip of sorts. The easy thing to do would be to look at connor hello books season, and look at you know. Cam Talbot Season David, riddick season and say okay. Winnipeg's got the distinct advantage in net and I. think that's true, but in a small sample like five games I mean the amount of balances that can completely change the course of the series, no matter how goaltenders playing that. As much as goaltending is in Winnipeg's favor and goaltending can dictate series is anything can happen and that one is so compelling that me. If there's even one bad giveaway behind the net one odd bounce, it'll change the goaltending narrative in an awful hurry the other thing that I'm really curious about, and this is something to to really pay attention to about Winnipeg the. Addition of Dylan to mellow just before the trade deadline, I think just a moment ago I was talking about Josh Morrissey needing to go from Jacob Trueba to Tucker. Pool and figuring out new chemistry with somebody who is not as strong of an NHL player. Morrissey was able to play with domed Mellon his last few games that coincided with Winnipeg's winning streak to run into the pause, and it coincided with full health on the jets as well as soon as you give more mellow and then Neil. Peon can Dimitri Kulikov was the other parent plane top four minutes. demelza appearance almost gives Winnipeg in entire new pairing and gives Morrissey a boost. He hasn't had all season long as well so Winnipeg's. The defense suddenly for the first time looks like it could handle top four matchups, which is good. 'cause Calgary's top six is obviously very powerful. Yeah, it's fascinating seeing like you said I mean..

"I guess the first question would be less been asking all our guests today. Your reaction, the last dozen days in hockey, as the sport confronts its own sort of racial inequities. Wall also having hundred over one hundred players comment on. Police, brutality protests and the things that are going on in the world. Yeah I think my lens for it. I mean it begins with the Akeem loose story at the Players Tribune continues through a few other comments, but as you know in Winnipeg, Blake Wheeler hasn't been one of the more outspoken athletes in terms of hey, you know racism is real. It's something that's affecting people outside of the sport inside the sport. Well, he he said he had. He's had a lot to stay. In support of evanger canes say McCain has been talking about racism and hockey, since the two of them were teammates back in Winnipeg and I think the thing that is really special about the way Blake Wheeler is approaching it, and hopefully this means the way that Winnipeg is approaching. It overall is he's not doing. Doing it in in a way that scores, social media, points or you know conveys a sense of optimism, the stuff that he's posting about doing real personal work and we had a forty five minute zoom call with them the other day he was talking about real lurks, starting at home, and then and talking with family about that and I think that's one of the. The more unique things is that you know if if this is going to change, a policy is GonNa get better of society is going to get better I gotta start in the family in the home in the community with individual work and I liked blake. We lose leadership on particular in that and the other thing that wheeler did that. I thought was fascinating. Because I don't think any other player has even come close to it, is he? PUT DONALD TRUMP's. Name in his mouth and talked about trump talked about Bernie Sanders, and talked about kind of dancing away from the idea of this being a political debate, and saying that the in the sense of like. Fica keeping people alive and equality shouldn't be political issues, but also saying hey, listen man, go to the polls, and and vote with your conscience on these issues. If you really care about them, and that's a step further than almost any other player took this year this in these last couple of weeks. Yeah. I. I agree with that. That was an interesting line that he had to that. You decided to walk. I would say because he says you know it's not about Republicans. Not About Democrats not about politics, it's about human rights, and they're human beings being treated on equally, that's not a partisan issue, and then later he says and remember you know you gotta take it to the ballot box and that's not just nationally, so there's there's a connection made that if you WanNa, make the leap that that you know he certainly passionate views on it, and it is. I think it is political because of of how things are structured, but he also I think new is audience and knew where he was out in terms of walking line. That's delicate. I think and in this game in the scope of the NHL landscape to the fact that he would do that and the fuck it. He would even specifically talk about police brutality as well I think he's I think he's almost unique, and he certainly on on the front edge of. Of that among NHL players, yeah, if you had to kind of put it in a pyramid right like top of the pyramid is is sort of you know putting making it political than next stage down is actually addressing police brutality, and then the rest of it is sort of the things that you've seen all these other statements that have been a bit more of a populist stand think than than addressing some of the real issues that are being brought up in these protests. One last thing on on these issues. You mentioned a vendor Kane. Look I think we all have a complicated relationship with Vander Cain. With the things that he's done off the ace including violence against women and I don't think Winnipeg's any different, insofar as a complicated relationship with the Vendor Kane. Have you gotten a sense of how jets fans or the city at large is dealing with his ascendance to being a leader on these issues. And even to the point. Where like you said Blake Wheeler kind of outlook. We should have listened to a vendor back in the day when he was here when he spoke out about the stuff. Yeah I think you hit on the head. In terms of the, it's a complicated relationship and I think Winnipeg House, their complicated relationship with event hurricane I mean he was cast out. A sensibly for for locker room issues. We know the money phone incident, and there's what you just referenced as well in terms of violence, and if it may be tough for for some to see his words on this issue without trying to what about it a whole lot well, what about those other things that? You've done wrong? I? Don't know that that invalidates his perspective on racism in hockey at all I don't i. don't think that's necessarily it, but I can see the founder kind of struggling with it. There's the omnipresent. Of Okay, evanger King Booed PTA. Sue Band gets booed and Winnipeg is that because their star players is that because there's a hint of racial of racism in that as well and I think most just founds will attribute it to the quality of players. They are perhaps a little bit I mean there's been altercations between safely and sue ban on the ice and Winnipeg we'll. Of course. Its memories Evanger Cain wanting Elton whatever the bachelor. Exactly ends up being it's it's a gray area right?.

"Conversations that they certainly weren't having the past at least publicly, and and that's a that's a great first step so I know they can certainly do a lot more just in terms of that. It's least nice to see them addressing and obviously you know. I mean racism and hockey is very deeply entrenched like as a society, but I mean it extends to to so many different factors in so many different levels including whether it's you know European, players or anyone that's basically outside of North America, and that's something that that hockey has been H. O. I should say has been very. Reluctant to kind of publicly acknowledged at least even though it's been something that's been percolating for a long time. Did. Move on you. Differentiating between NHL Hockey I think it's an important lesson going forward for. All right, let's get some of the words. This is of course. The NHL, awards, Bonanza episode of ESPN and ice. How are you untangling the Hart Trophy debate this year? I feel like it's been years since we actually watched hockey so I had to do a lot of a lot of research just to kind of jog. My memory in terms of what actually happened the last time we were watching. These guys play and I I know you and different this a little. Little bit at least we have in the past, but for me. I don't really take a team. Performance into consideration gearing man missing the playoffs doesn't preclude you from for winning an award in my opinion, I I understand that the logic that you know if you're gonNA miss if you're missing the playoffs, anyway the great season. What did you really ultimately accomplish? I. Just think listen. We can't have it both ways. We Up Hockey, ultimate team sport where no individual is greater than the whole yet At the same time we WANNA punish individuals for being on a bad team here. Even though isn't an individual or so I'd rather focus on what the the players in question could control and so with that in mind especially this year I think it throw the. He'd want your Android just like twenty four teams or basically making the playoffs at this point by the time we have to the down we have to. To vote, so it's really tough to untangle that, but I think it's a it's A. It's a very fashion discussions and I sent my sort of logic team. Last week we'll hear writing about this site, but I think the are tiny cases incredibly interesting, just based on the effect the adding here in New York on his team when he was on the ice versus when he was offered. I agree with you in Aaron. Very compelling case what would be your case for not dry in this situation? Being that he won the art Ross? Well I, don't think too much. Is Dodger title as much as it is just what? Did I think the dress idol thing some context important because I think you see the forty three goals one hundred ten points in seventy one games. It's certainly impressive and to counter to. All of that is and we're GONNA get this only talked about the doors and John Carlson, but it's wild scraping that he's creating on one of the whenever he's on the ice boilers are bleeding. All that all kinds right back and it's basically sort of neutralizing all of the that they made or evening out now what I'll say to that is I think contact is important because address idol. It's clear that part of it has to do I'm sure with what they're asking him to do. When he's out there. Both in terms of the ice time burden in mcdavid have because the lack of depth on a team and. And also, because if they're not creating offense at team, probably creating offense so I, think they're asking them to maybe cheat a little bit offensively and quiet zone a bit sooner whenever they see an opening there so they can create those time there too I, WanNa they're known for, and so sometimes that lead to coming back the other way and backfiring, so all of that needs to be taken into account I think. Sharing that he's the second, most valuable player is certainly not a knock the him although I know that. Will probably take that especially after everything that's going on with mcdavid the past couple years, and how it feels like we are kind of moving the goalpost now in terms of playoff, who agility factor in their candidacy? You mentioned the Norris. is going to be a real tough one. You already have some canaries in the coal mine that. Athletic I think it was and I. Think Nhl Dot, com have cast their lots. NHL Dot Com for Carlson I think Yossi was the overwhelming winner in the athletic Straw straw-poll. Where do you fall on this one? Because you have to say that in talking about Kucherov last season, Carlson's offensive year this year is one of the best we've seen in the last thirty years and I have a hard time unpacking that fact from the idea that maybe he isn't the best all around defenseman this season. Yeah, I mean it's certainly fair like. Like seventy five points, jump off the page and what he's done creating offensively and I. Don't think he's as much of a passenger on power players. People make you believe because I. Think some of this stuff does with his vision. Quarterbacking opened up a lot of those opportunities for Ovechkin because that's documents on so forth but I. It's it's similar. Nice I! Don't like it when you look at the actual effect in terms of all the models and. The impact he has. He gives back a lot of what he creates offensively defensively whereas you'll see. I don't think the gap between them. where he has sixty five points, and he actually had even more goal score than Carlson by one. Is Big enough to justify overlooking what you'll see, does and the neutrals. Oh, how? He impact everything when he's on the ice at five on five, and so what he did. Especially with Alex Missing Goes Twenty Games after his concussion and in the winter classic and sort of how he carried that team was really president the volume for an too i. mean he's I most offensive shots by a mile. Who's playing nearly twenty six minutes a night, so he has a lot of those similar. Or checkpoints that calls and hit with pity were sort of defensive drawbacks for me I think that of put them slightly over the top, but I understand that people feel like you know. We often just look at point whether it's not the now. It feels like we're. We're trying to make these other arguments against Carlson's. It's tough man, because like I feel a certain obligation to vote for Carlson because of what happened to Mike Green. Trying to right that wrong, but then again I think the difference is that green at the time also had an analytic argument in the sense that the possession numbers when he was on the ice for very strong and I don't think Carlson has the same sort of underlying argument if you if you kind of you know open up the hood, a little bit on them. That debt green had on his outstanding offense season, so yeah, the wind's blowing towards Yo see and i. don't necessarily think it's an ill wind The callers one that I get asked about every single day when I do radio hits because people are fascinated by especially in Vancouver. You Team Team co-winner team Kale on this one. Day Yeah I guess. Now slightly leaving the Hughes just purely because I felt like he did. Not More, but he did roughly the same as my car with slightly less to work with I. Think you know if you look at the way my car was used and the fact that he's got this sixty three percent opposite zone star rate heavily shelter, and he was himself, but because playing more than half minutes at five on five beginning out, there is kind of a safety blanket for him, and so he was a great spot..

"Very very hypothetical but the NHL the NHL Players Association the NHL and NHL Players Association meetings are taking place in which they plan on discussing a possible return for the twenty nineteen twenty twenty NHL season and playoffs in the one idea that seems to be floating around as a potential playoff tournament that would take place in North Dakota North Dakota in the middle of nowhere because there are fewer people yeah one location that's being mentioned for this possible finishing of the of the regular season and playoffs is North Dakota several sites would be necessary but the Ralph Engelstad arena in Grand Forks North Dakota makes sense it is the it was the host of the two thousand five World Junior Championships the twenty sixteen world under eighteens and ends it is the home of the NC double a is fighting hawks they say it is a very impressive facility that's pretty much out in the middle of nowhere and I could see that being the thing they're they're scenarios being talked about the same way with the with the NBA body gonna do we gonna start testing everybody every day a gas remember when we were like oh they're not going to have supporting you know they're gonna have games in front of no fans would we would we kill right now for a game in front of fans yeah it it is wild to think how fast this thing progressed in the sense of I remember believing so seeing Italy in going okay there's no way we would never you know we would be playing in front of empty arenas right in for like a day that became a possible reality and then you know before that could even come to fruition that was shut down and and here we are so you know if if it's shipping our athletes out in the middle of nowhere to where nobody else is in having the play sports for the rest of us is what needs to happen I think we're gonna get to a point where where that's got to happen trump said on Saturday he talked to everybody he was on a conference call with every single leader of every single group and he's talking about getting back to work he said in a press conference look for the NFL NFL to start on time I hope that's right I mean he also tweeted out this morning light at the end of the tunnel that was it that was the tweet okay I'll take whatever I think wherever he can find hope right now that just a day after the Surgeon General who had been you know one of the guys who is somebody accused him of down playing it in the beginning he seemed to be more worried about you know S. seeing Donald did you know Donald Trump often in giving us the fax yeah yesterday he made a couple different appearances on TV and he had a possibly some of the starkest warnings we've heard yes and yet in regards to the next week in regards to the covert nineteen great Surgeon General okay this tragically fitting that weren't talking at the beginning of Holy Week because this is going to be the hardest and the saddest week of most Americans live quite frankly this is going to be our Pearl Harbor moment R. nine eleven moment only is not going to be localized it's going to be happening all over the country and I want America to understand that but I also want them to understand that the public along with the state and federal government have the power to change the trajectory of this epidemic is trust do you find that careless I mean did did those words seem like maybe not the best idea I wish look I I'm sure these people all choose their words very carefully sometimes to me it doesn't seem like they choose them carefully enough so when I first saw this I thought oh my god that's going to scare a lot of people we we talk often about you know the the fear mongering and how not to get caught up in it and you know we want to make sure we're walking that line yeah but then in the same breath we sit here we have conversations about how seemingly nobody's taking anything seriously we've got young people who still want to hold on to their you know their social life by doing all the things they're doing we can't get old people you know who should be most worried of all to stay inside so do you think when they say things like that it's to get those people who don't seem to get the head to get the hit I hope so but I don't think there's any reaching those people that doesn't mean they shouldn't try yeah I mean I did to me I I think I'm over I'm over being mad at for people for for doing things that seem real scary right if the truth is the truth I don't think people are going to realize until there it's in our backyard it's still your neighbor in your apartment complex your neighbor at home or somebody one of your relatives dies I don't think that you know outside of those few things I don't think the average person is going to be touched enough but that's just my opinion saying things like this might get a few of those people to to act right totally agree of this kind is going under the radar a little bit Christopher cross a staple here on through gravel live here and you know usually every Friday known for his Grammy Award hating with hits like sailing and Arthur's theme all tested positive for the corona virus and he is saying it is the sickest worst illness he's ever had in his entire life Duran Duran's bassist John Taylor announced he added as well he beat it already but he said it was like the worst flu you could possibly imagine yeah Christopher cross released a statement saying I'm sorry to report that I am among the growing number of Americans who tested positive for the cove it nineteen virus I'm not in the in the habitat of discussing medical issues on social media but I do so in the hopes this will help other people to understand how serious and how contagious this illness is he does gonna say this is possibly the worst elements I've ever experienced sixty eight years old yes I mean he's he's he's out of the it's not out of the woods and he has had some freaking phenomenal songs I need to see people like Chris Cuomo you know the brother of governor Andrew Cuomo he was on CNN saying he has had the worst night of his life he chipped his tooth from shivering so much and was hallucinating because of the fever the cable came along with covert nineteen thought he talked to his dad right is dead yeah his dad dad he thought he was seeing.

"And I've no idea why owned this Villa Nova t-shirt you didn't even go to Villanova even go there in your conference then stater. No no through. Don't even know anyone who went. There was a thrift shop. I think I stole it from home. My little sister is probably one of her friends. Yeah the way things go on a life's great mysteries. You broke news for the podcast grew. Ju Ju Ju to choose FITTING SIREN. What's going on with the NHL Unemployment has the NHL is temporarily cutting all league office employees. Pay By twenty five percent. This is obviously due to the ongoing corona virus pandemic. The hope I was told by League office employees is that this would prevent them from making any layoffs during this uncertain time. So that's obviously a positive but the sense I got is this comes a day after the New Jersey devils became the first known team in the NHL to cut their employees pay. I know right as I got this deuce out. The Montreal Canadian said they're making massive cuts but laying off sixty percent of their employees. I'd believe there was massive pressure from the club saying. Hey if we're going to do this we need some leadership and we need some guidance in the NHL needs to stand with us and do the same thing and show solidarity and so that's what they did need like you said the Canadians layoff sixty percent of their staff. They have a fund six Million Dollar Assistance Fund that Will Enhance Employment Insurance Benefits Aka unemployment for period of eight weeks. Insuring employees will receive eighty percent of their base salary during this period so essentially a twenty percent salary cut which is sort of almost in line with the NHL did with its employees the devils and the sixers announced that they are also dialing back their salaries pay cuts to employee's is four day workweek. Twenty percent pay cuts For those employees and then also I guess the leadership of those teams are also taken some some pay cuts as well voluntarily voluntarily. This all comes in the aftermath of yesterday's board of Governors. Call us the podcast Tuesday which I don't think like you said it's coincidental. You're going to see more and more teams probably taking more aggressive action. One week after trying to figure out how to pay part time workers at the Rena. We're GONNA see the other side of that coin which is dramatic Salary and workforce reductions as the NHL heads into a period of uncertainty and again after the call. I mean what was communicated there. What's the time line that they're getting? I mean the thing that we heard emerge from it. Yesterday was the idea that we could have games in July and August and potentially play a Stanley Cup finals. September was one of the things disgust so I think when these teams start looking at that calendar saving themselves all right. What do we need to do to get our house in order to not bleed money all over the place as it comes to the three months potentially away from the rink totally and I think you know the problematic part for all of everybody for all of everybody entire world is not knowing how long this is? GonNa last and I think when we start to see moves like this we get a sense that they're starting to listen to the scientists and listen to the doctors and understand. Oh Yeah when we said that thing about. Nhl Players. Getting back into team facilities weeks time that was a little ambitious and probably premature the thing. I'm really curious about is. What are the discussions? Like with regards to what? It's all going to look like when it gets back. And what are the priorities? Is the regular season a priority? It seems like it might be if they're talking about potentially playing games into September that they want to get everybody back on the ice and play a few more games and squeeze out some more revenue from regular season games. Even though you wonder who the hell's going to buy a ticket to a regular season game with the economy being the way it is and if you're if you have a playoff team in your town why on Earth would you buy a regular season ticket. You know you're gonNA save that over the playoffs right so and that quite sure what's going on there and the thing about this regular season stuff that I find kind of troubling. It's quite obvious that in some cases Boston Buffalo being two of them. That teams aren't paying their part time staff as long as the Games haven't been canceled. That's kind of a problem for me like if we're going to diddle around with the idea that we're going to still play regular season games at some point let's costing people money people that probably need that money at this point right now and not have teams just going to be like will three months from now when they finally cancel the game coach. Jack they made a fifty the money right now you know and so the other thing too. Is that if you're someone who has money tied up into hockey tickets and you're saying to yourself boy. I'd like to get that deposit on a sweet back or I'd like to get those couple hundred ducats. I dropped from my family to go to a regular season game at the end of March back. He can't get that money either. Because teams aren't refunding anybody as long as the Games are only paused and the third party ticket companies like STUBHUB and seek. Aren't giving money back as long as the Games are just paused. It's only through cancelation. That refunds are triggered. And so as long as we're in this sort of let's finish out the regular season mode which to me. Logistically is stupid to begin with. Then you're actually withholding money from people that could probably really use it right now given all the uncertainty you know we see the NHL being so hell bent on finishing some part of the season. There are one of the few leagues that were talking about it right when it happened. And now we see when it's just twelve days into this pause and they're already talking about they're already doing cutting employees salaries by twenty five percent of why it is important to them that said they also need to realize that their hamstring so many people like you said and I think this entire thing shedding light on how employers treat their employees. And we're GONNA come out of this a lot wiser and maybe a lot more cynical. It's possible yeah now WANNA be coming out of. This is a question a lot of people are asking and frankly whenever I think of breaking hockey news. There's only one that I go to and that is renowned baseball announcer. Joe Buck who was on. Espn radio owned. The Michael. Kay Show in New York on Monday and dropped this nugget of information on the air. It's funny you know. One of the aforementioned daughters of mine is dating a kid who plays in the NHL To go back to the NHL. And I know that the players have been told that when they come back if they come back it's GonNa be a week of some expedited camp and then they're going to jump right into the postseason And I don't know how the formula works you know in the NBA. I I would. I would hope that the NFL schedule itself isn't Affected but I. It's everything's such an unknown. Nobody can look at you in the eyes and say here's when they're going to start clan again. Nhl Camps would open for a week and then straight into the postseason courtesy of the National Hockey League player. The Joe Books Daughter is dating emily. So if you know anything about Saint Louis a small community and the bucks are saint. Louise people obviously text my friend from Saint Louis being like you know I. I stopped one of the daughters and her instagram's public and I'm going to hold rabbit hole and the other one's private. It must be this girl. I text my friend. Who is she dating? And I call you and I'm like Greg will figure this out I've got people on it. You're like what Christian pitcher kids. 'cause you Fisher from the Arizona cowed. Now listen when we get into work stoppages. I'm a wily veteran of having covered the o-5 lockout and the two thousand twelve lockout. This is when you start getting into my friends a janitor at the arena Easter that he heard kind of stuff and the crazy thing about it. Is that one out of every. Ten of those stories is absolutely true but he did. He did In the NHL and asked. Have you communicated this plan at all to the players in your giant conference calls? There's like one hundred guys in the line and the NHLPA sadly said No. This was not something that was communicated from the Players Association. So either the coyotes players have gone rogue by the way. If you're the coyotes player don't we'll be buying into this minicam playoffs thing. You'd be lobbying hard for the regular season but this information collected by Joe Buck spread about on the ESPN radio airwaves. In New York. Alas not official company line from the NHL Players Association. But we. Emily and I are committed to track down. Every news tip and lead comes our way you know. I A lot of twenty five minutes on Instagram. This morning. For this all right. We'll say this is my first guest here today. I will say the I guess I just want to say one thing in a minute though. I'm getting a lot of questions from friends from random people when the NHL is going to start again what it will look like like that. I think the bottom line is nobody knows not even the NHL. They're going through a bunch of models and some of those models are probably leaking out and being communicated to the Christian fishers of the world. But the truth is we have no idea where this is going to end and we have no idea what it's going to look like and and we come back. We come back to one thing and this will be the mantra on this. Show it all has to do with when people can travel and when people can gather and until. We have clarity on both of those things. We got clarity on anything all right time. Joining us on the line is coach. Doug Tara of the Cornell Women's hockey team and at the time that their season was cancelled cornell was the top ranked team in the country and coach. I just have to ask you. When did this I come on your radar of you know? This is something that could affect your season. How did you get the news? What was it like telling your players where we just finished our. Ecac tournaments on Sunday and then when the star of the week Monday Tuesday we we gave them off and then I think it was maybe Wednesday night when started to see I think it was the. Nba cancelled Their game and were suspending the season and then the next day the Ivy League get suspended All of their sports going forward But at that point we weren't really sure because we were out of ECAC PLAY. There was no more ivy league play so we were waiting to see what was happening with the NC Double A. We only had two weeks left and it was all. Nc Double A. Tournament. Play so Originally you know middle the week on Wednesday. We thought we'd be playing on Saturday with no fans in building and that's how we were proceeding and then Thursday fifteen minutes before we were both to have our team meeting and practice Our Administrator Anita Brenner came in and told me that That the game had been cancelled so we didn't have a whole lot of time before we were going in to meet the team so that was pretty tough conversation going into that practice. What was that conversation like? What was the message you gave them? It was difficult because we weren't really prepared. I mean Probably about an hour earlier I had been meeting with my assistant coaches and we were going through practice and We were planning meeting on penalty. Kill and all of that and then you know we were kind of on edge because he saw a lot of things getting cancelled so you know in the back of our mind renew. It might happen but we also wanted to proceed as if we were playing the game and so really hadn't prepared anything. As far as conversations with our team went so went in and you know tried to as much as possible put a you know a positive spin on it but I said but I said you're probably not going to hear a whole lot of what I have to say right now and also the quite honestly where we're in tears You know and I I said at least we were able to experience most of our season. You know. We really only missed the last two weeks. It's it's the most important two weeks but But we got to have. I'm really special season feed. That was unprecedented for us in Cornell Women's hockey going undefeated and ECAC Regular season And doing things that we'd never accomplished before we had never finished the ranked number one going into the NC Double A. Tournament. So we've had successes here over the fifteen years but We had never gotten to that level. going into the tournament so Tried to point out all the positives that we were able to experience and all the moments that we were able to experience throughout the year and And get in you know and and looking at the spring sports. They weren't even able to to have their season so In some ways we were fortunate so there is some talk in the NCAA about offering eligibility or relief For players in spring sports for seniors. Who GOT THEIR SEASON CANCELLED? And I know there's some discussion about extending that to winter sports as well considering your postseason was cancelled. What's your opinion on that? And do you think that's something that your seniors would want to take of? Yeah we We met Right after About practice as well and The next day and there were starting to be conversations circling that they were going to give an extra year eligibility to the spring sports and An extra year for seniors on the Winter Sports..

"In you're right though it's never like I've and then if it expands beyond that we have seen like and the world championships is interesting because you mentioned the I H F. I sang at fast. So I don't mess up the acronym Via cancelled six tournaments. But they didn't cancel so far the two signature events the senior women's and senior. Men's the men's is in May in Switzerland Switzerland's a country that we see now is being affected. Bill Daley said I can't imagine we would put a mandate on saying guys can't go because all gets NHL employees but it's not NHL sanctioned event talked to some GM saying how would you handle it if you're player wants to go over there like what would your course of action be. Yes I like the the the notion I got from the GM's because I mean this isn't there. You're very strategic. So they lean pretty heavily on with the League recommends so even if the League says look we can't ban players again. This is in our event or whatever we can't make these unilateral decisions if they make a recommendation even if it's like you know no international travel for the employees or whatever that may be that was that was part of the memo that went last week there. Was you know a a portion of talked about the employee travel? I think the GM's are GonNa lean pretty heavily into whatever recommendation from the League. I mean that's you know I don't know what else you do this to other things that can affect the NHL in the short term one we heard about the stick shortage the potential sexual urge when the Bauer factories. Were shut down. Stephen Wine Report of that story. Bill Daley told me that bad has been find. The League was on top of it. It's no longer issue. But what is an issue? Is that sound like the? Nhl is going to go to China next year and they had gun. Preseason games there in two thousand seventeen and twenty eighteen They were going to go last year but couldn't do it because of scheduling arenas and they didn't have anything firm yet. Bill Daley is like now because the virus like it's been really hard to firm plan so that seems unlikely. I'm curious in your opinion. Like what other things are. We not thinking about what this could affect. Yeah I mean that's a great question so he so when I was looking over some of the the you know the memo and some of the League recommendations like the. Cdc is saying you know if it's in your community. Don't have large gatherings you playoff game. A large gather accurate liquid is more large gathering than a sporting events. A practice gathering. Yeah like what? Are you even thinking about that was at the NFL combine last week? And I'm in your. Did you go to prime? I know I would.
