"We were on michigan. That game because i do michigan was the best team. You actually called it up before. I did though adam so i'm gonna give you some credit for that about five six weeks ago. Idaho illinois michigan. You had michigan. Illinois ended up being right about that so congrats them at but michigan is the best all-round best ball team in the big tent. That is one hundred percent for sure and You know they have to many matchup nightmares really but at the same time. They could have bad games and as far as the tournament. Big tennis so well rounded as you said at. I can't take a favorite right now in the big ten but ohio state. They are much better than i thought. Coming into. this season and ohio state is going to be a favourite Coming up this week here and Against michigan state. I'm sure we're going to get into that game. Yeah definitely we'll definitely get into that game and get into a few of the games in the big ten conference in ohio state. I mean we've harped on this point a lot here on the show about teams that shoot a lotta mid-range jumpers not really teams that we wanna back. And i think that is a problem for ohio state as they go forward in that they are a good shooting team. But you know if you don't do well in those midrand shots and it's such a big part of your game that can be a significant problem for you in this one and done format so i think state is the type of team that is very good but if they get bounced early in the big ten tournament if they get bounced early in the ncaa tournament. I probably won't end up being that surprised. And that's a distinction. That i think at this time of the year. You absolutely have to make me think about iowa. For example iowa one of the best offensive teams in the country. second in adjusted offense efficiency. According to tour bec- they are terrible. Defensively and at some point in this one and done format. That will come back to hurt them. So that's why when you're looking at nc double a. Tournament futures conference tournament. Future stuff like that. You want a balanced profile and for ohio state and iowa. They just don't really have that to the same degree that some of the other teams do where book i mean. They're near the top five teams in the country offensively but defensively. They leave something to be desired. So as we get into these later in the season situations and specifically postseason play where you have no margin for error. Those are teams. I tend to worry about quite a bit. What i will say about ohio state. Is they take less. Mid-range jumpers than they did a little earlier. I believe in hassle metrics. They rank in the top ten before. They're now in the top thirty forbids rates jumper. So i mean for attempted not talking the percent they make them talking for attempted so they've improved a little bit on that so that's a good thing for ohio state but yeah i when it comes to tournament teams you want some balance and he wanna star. You wanna start. That could take over when it's needed. There's a couple of big ten teams. That don't have that you know. Wisconsin is one of those teams. They don't have that star that takes them to the next level the united star that bills them out when they're up three in there too nervous to hit the final shot. You know you stay away from those teams for sure. But i completely agree. You want some good balance when it comes to these tournaments like somebody that would be a concern for a team. For example of luga. Garza gets in foul trouble early in a game. Then then what happens to them. You know i mean they. They have a lot of different scoring options. But is that premier mismatch down low for this team to wear you know if he winds up having to sit out ten eleven minutes in the first half something like that to avoid getting that third fall in a one and done format. That's really concerning. So these are all things that you want to factor in the equation as your maybe starting to put together a little bit of an ncaa tournament portfolio speaking of teams in the ncaa tournament. Couple of teams. That probably need. Tonight's win to feel more confident with their chances indiana and rutgers now of course being in the big ten they may get some preferential treatment when selection sunday rolls around but tonight's game would definitely be an important one for either one of these teams to get rutgers. Eighty three and a half point favorite here in this one. Total one thirty two and a half so this spread. I hate to say it but his. It's probably exactly where i'd bake it. And it's i guess you can call it a road. Revenge spot for indiana. But when rutgers faced indiana they were so desperate you know we were on rutgers game and they happen to pull off the victory. Thank goodness but neither teams decorated shooting the ball very middle of the road. Indiana's better at threes thirty four point six percent to thirty one point eight percent but rutgers shoots the to a little bit better fifty one point nine percent Field goal percentage to forty nine point six total field. Goal percentage both teams equal and rebounds indiana averages a little bit better Points per game. I think one or two points per game over rutgers but you also have to factor that rutgers was injured a little bit. This year in indiana really wasn't so i mean even sit out you know the the spreads perfect is exactly where i bake it. You know you can't bet every game but you know when it comes to some of these bigger conferences. sometimes you just have to pass this game on passing on. I have a slight lead. The under. Because i think the game at about one thirty one so i'll give a slightly to the under this one but unfortunately nothing big yeah. It's a tough one at one. Hundred brought up on monday when we talked about. This show made a lot of sense. Is that this is a very important game. I mean i think rutgers is on the plus side of the bubble. I think they would get in at this point in time. Indiana i'm less sure about but one of the things that kyle mentioned earlier in the week and as i said this total sitting thirty two and a half. Is that the more important. The game the tighter the two teams kind of play. You sort of try to play as mistake. Free as you possibly. Can you know we talked a little bit before the show. And you and i were having a discussion not related to sports betting per se about new your individual risk profile and how much risk tolerance you're willing to take on a you know in a given situation when it comes to sports you're talking about a game of this magnitude your risk tolerance is low. You wanna make sure you're going through your offense going through your best sets going through the things that should give you the most success and these are two teams that they don't really fly up and down the court for the most part so you've got a situation here where to me. I think both of these teams do try to play as mistake. Free as possible and win. The stakes are high in those types of games. It does kind of point you in the direction of the under. Yeah and i think that's why a lean to the under and also if you look at their free throw percentage indiana rings. Two hundred ninety. I sixty six point.

"Just all right. Let's transition to this. Ncw football thing. So bring up the ncw. Football was on startled playstation. Two thousand two think there was a dozen one but we'll start with the two free addition. It started one. But i was gonna thousand three so from two thousand two thousand fourteen. There were twelve editions of the game. Okay and there were. I'm trying to see how that is. That's about twenty four twenty. Two ninety overall players ninety nine is the highest rating. You get in a game or an nc double a game and three thousand three. There was one that has a four. There was two thousand and five. There was four on and on and on so i go through this list of the games coming back. We're celebrating but once we get done with this list that i read you were me and jack and if you have anybody just throw it out. You weren't involved in the planning here because you depending meeting. I have a list of about fourteen players. Since two thousand fourteen i think would have been nine overall. I will do. I will listen to your list. And i will say i agree or disagree and then i'll add some if i need to okay. Katie is closing the door. Because there's people this place is a zoo. One o'clock you're right. I've been watching some of those. It's something it's something it's something it's a good way to put the luckiest show. I ended up. I just kinda fell backwards into that one. Sometimes i have no idea what you're talking about. No what he's saying for sure. Yeah very talented people on there on the actual show you know. Usually i don't either all right So is this. are you reading a different list new. I just pulled up ahead of time. Like heisman. Voting for the years. Look at katie. Okay success i gotta sneeze sneeze. Okay do my thing. Bless you for such a big man. Yeah the very feminine sneeze. Go hell okay. Two thousand three e j henderson linebacker four maryland was the only ninety nine overall. Two thousand four roy williams or received from texas. Chris gamble defensive back from ohio state. Two thousand five mike. Usc marcus spears. David pollack announcers now dare johnson linebacker from texas two thousand six matt line at reggie bush and matthias keyword neca at boston. College i is. We be surprised if like there's the developer. He was great in college. He was he does that ninety nine. Ers didn't have great careers. But like gaines. adams was a beast laurent. Landry mason crosby kicker back on how. Many steroids was laurent landry. Alessia sam baker. Dan connor same baker kind of escaped my memory a ticker center office. Wyman two thousand and nine. Tim tebow james nitish two thousand ten. Sam bradford jermaine gresham in oklahoma. Tim tebow taylor. Mays safety usa none in eleven to twelve andrew. Luck two thousand fourteen. Cloudy those are your ninety nine overalls. I do not understand how it works so to be nine overall. You have to come into the season with a lot of accomplishment already like there are certain players. I two thousand fifteen derrick. Henry had an incredible season won the heisman but the year after he was gone so he didn't return to the game after his big huge breakout. He didn't return to the game. Rg three didn't return. The game johnny mandel was an overall. He should have been nine overall. I mean that's the biggest snub in two thousand and thirteen. That's actually fucked up. Fourteen for him it would have been fourteen. Nobody cenex no wait. Hold on. he wanted chosen at all. It's a year ahead. The game is a year ahead off season. You would have been playing two thousand thirteen two thousand thirteen hundred day. This fox graphic did it. No no yeah. It's going by the year of the game. it's about a year of the game but not the number landon not play college football. In two thousand fourteen. He played thirteen. he was in the fourteen game. It's going by the year that game. No no that's not right. That's not what i know. He played in fourteen. No that's right. Yeah right now. We're right that's right. So johnny should have been chosen wrong right. John should have been right now. Right yanni got fucking eighties right now. I know katie's been right. The whole time only didn't opening every show. Maybe by not saying anything was no she soon as the wrong. Those are the players and those are the years ours it did. Johnny gets snubbed into this is a great youtube show. I do love. The ron utah. Podcast i thought. I think it's going well so here. It's just thirteen or not. Just okay shit. It was so simple to answer. Alaska the fourteen game up. It was the thirteenth season fourteen game. That's when he got the highest chosen twelve right but he came back and thirteen thousand and twelve game was two thousand thirteen. I don't understand. He won the heisman. two thousand twelve. Yes the game in two thousand twelve. Thirteen came back in two thousand thirteen. The game was two thousand and four. Okay yes i follow. But i don't think that that graphic doing that. It is okay. Okay all right. We're we're all on the same page. Now he got snubbed in two thousand fourteen all right so since since the game has gone away. Two thousand thirteen season two thousand fourteen year. Yes we've had eight seasons. Here are my players. I believe would've been ninety nine nine nine or one hundred. I've i wrote them down or so just players. It came to my mind okay. Okay penn state running back saquon. Barkley would have been a ninety nine overall agreed the year. Everyone the heisman trophy. Lamar jackson quarterback louisville would have been nine nine overall. I would almost make the argument. He might have been one hundred never. There's ever been one hundred ever. Yeah but lamar jackson. You wanted to you. But you're saying he would be one hundred. I think that he could have been. Yes maybe more than. I think he was the big year though. Yeah when of combat he would have been and the way that he played that year all right video game literally on the overall. Trevor lawrence benign overall Potentially one hundred for two. You keep saying there are no. I know but i like the idea that we are going further. You're going above and beyond to. I always see that wind relaxed. Here's a couple. I messed up into this big f. So jameis winston. The he won the heisman would have been nine overall justin fields. This year coming into this year. He had fifty touchdowns three interceptions last year. He didn't have as good a year coming into the year. I think he would have been nine. Can i and this is my ignorance of the game. This is my ignorance. Why would he have gotten nine overall. But johnny who wanna heisman. Didn't who led the sec in rushing quarterback question. I have no idea why. Johnny manziel wasn't he. Didn't i think maybe his accuracy on game wasn't as sharp as justin feels probably would have been with fifty touchdowns three interceptions. I think i'm not the middle i. I'm just curious. Why just in fields would get that night. But somebody two thousand fifteen. Zeke elliott would have been ninety nine a great.

"Tournament format the nc double a. Announced that any team personnel traveling to the tournament and coming into contact with participants which is players coaches staff and administrators must have seven straight days of negative test results before they even traveled to indianapolis. So you're going to have conference tournaments. Which right now are scheduled to end the saturday or sunday before the ncaa tournament begins the ncaa tournament. Against the first four on thursday in the first round starting on friday. If you're trying to steal your team is in the tournament are you can play in the big east tournament. I mean. I know there's still a lot of differences of opinion on cove in nineteen how it should be handled. How it should be mitigated how it should be treated but given what we know about cove in nineteen you tell me what's better knowing that your team has to test negative for seven straight days before they even go to indy. What's better flying to a neutral site playing at a bunch of games consecutively or staying on campus being a bubble like environment and not going anywhere until it's time to leave for the ncaa tournament if you're travis steel. Are you taking your team to new york playing. Who knows how. Many games being in hotels being on a plane or hanging out at going into a bubble quarantining working out on your own mitigating risk. And then going up seventy four indy. I know what i would do. The whole whole seasons being played so we can have. Ncw tournament and it's cool of an event as the big east tournament. Is i would apply the same thing. Here to ohio state. i could use other schools. Kentucky's not gonna the ncaa tournament. Without winning the tournament. You see is not going to the ncaa tournament without winning the as he tournament to me. This question is more about if league. Tournaments happened if conference tournament. Take place and you've got a team that's in. We're good we're in. we don't need you know. Maybe you're playing for seating but that tournament the conference tournament is not going to determine whether or not we're in are you can apply knowing what the rule is. A kid can't play on friday or saturday of the ncaa tournament if he hasn't had seven consecutive days of negative tests. Where are they more likely to pick up over. Nineteen staying on campus being in a bubble quarantining being with just their teammates or jumping on a plane staying in a hotel and playing a bunch of games in consecutive days.
As Broad NCAA Change Awaits, College Football Is Facing a Recruiting Reckoning
"Is national signing day. Better college football reporter out there than our next gas. Ross dellinger from sports illustrated. He has written today about the ever. Slow changes of college football especially under the heading is brought into change a wage college. Football is facing a recruiting reckoning ross. Great to have you on and it seemed like a normal day nick. Sabin got all the siamese and everybody else was left to watch but Before we get to your piece just your reaction on a fairly quiet national signing day. Yeah it is. I think we're probably going to see more of this as we as we go through the year too it's just it's signing day is going to be quieter in quieter In already worst pretty quiet because the december national signing period but now you throw all of the transfer portal stuff With coaches holding spots for transfers and in the bigger news has been has been transfers. You know so not only did the early national signing day in december Kind of cake Take the spotlight away from the old school signing day but now you have transfers doing the same think at last check do we have. We have a number on how many tennessee players are in the portal. Well the number. Last week when i did compilation for that story you mentioned was nineteen And i figured there'd be tops in the nation but they are not They're number two Western kentucky has twenty one players in the portal freight a freight ask. What's going on there. But i'll look into it after you're off the air. Let's talk about your piece today. And and every time we talk to you you you you. You have your handle on on where college athletics is. And where is it going so look ahead as you report have reported on this subject and and what is likely to change in the future right. It's to put it simply politics. It's a mess It really is a messy situation right now when it comes to roster or management's It all starts because of the the influx of transfers. You know when when there were reports were out there that the ncaa was gonna pass the one time. Transfer exception and allow allow players to transfer without that one year sitting out penalty. Obviously players jumped in the transfer portal and their or at least by my count around thousand scholarship players. Transfer portal and about fifty percent of those Do not have a home right now. There could be hundreds more joining the spring and the summer when the dog officially pass it and they will pass it by april Shane lyons The d. one Oversight football oversight chair tells me they will pass it by april so you'll you'll have a bigger influx. What happens there when you get more transfers out there. They had fewer and fewer homes to go to You you've got transferred from the power. Five paul dropping down to the group of five or the fcs. 'cause there's not any room and then there's some transfers and the poodle that won't play football again. I mean that's been documented In fact i wrote about in lsu player who two years ago with no transfer portal in. Never play football again. Because there wasn't a spot for them so and wives and their spot because as you mentioned scholarship limitations. The ncaa has the schools can carry eighty five scholarship. Players can sign twenty five new players a year only can't get go above that twenty five and because of the influx of transfers there's talk of increasing or just in some way that twenty five man spot because what a transfer does all there's so many of them What happens is if you if you get a transfer day. When they leave that school they. They're in a way penalizing that school. That's an open scholarship. That school cannot fill In an adjoining their new school. And they're taking up a to precious twenty-five chinese you know initial counters. They call them. So there's a lot of issues for sure going on
John Chaney, iconic Temple University basketball coach, has died at 89
"Some sad news to report here. Legendary temple university head coach. John chaney has passed away just one week after his eighty ninth birthday. Cheney lead the owls to the ncaa tournament seventeen times in his tenure with the team including five appearances in the elite. Eight as we look at some of cheney's accomplishments vince. What's your reaction to hearing. The passing coach chaining. It said it's tough for another legend yet again and His energy and what he's done for temple university easy. He's a legend and he will be missed of. I cannot remember ask off air. Who was getting into fight with. He would do anything for his team and I was recruited. I've got an opportunity to talk with him. And his his knowledge of the game. He makes you feel comfortable. His love for people in a people gravitate to him. So it's just sad to see and go absolutely. I mean one of the most genuine human beings. I ever met and especially in high school when he was recruited me and he came down the old country. Beaumont texas on me. Just the nicest guy in the world but straightforward. Oh you can tell. They wanted the best for his players. He didn't have a hidden agenda. Everything bottom was was genuine. You could just tell people with good hearts and his spear rubbed off on you soon as he walked in a row. And we're on the miss them and you know it's just hard because it seems like every day waking up losing a great a great iconic figure that ties the game that inspired so many people in this world especially in the basketball world and coast saying they will truly be missed. No question about it. Legend a pioneer right. I mean his what he brought to that school and what he did for african american coaches right and what he did just in general for the african american community can never be overstated like he. He is a true legend and pioneer. In every sense of the word and of course our thoughts are with the cheney family and all his former players and fellow coaches as well and the temple family
Michigan State's NCAAT chances kaput? Who winds up with No. 1 overall seed?
"On thursday night gonzaga beat san diego ninety sixty two so the top ring zags sixteen to no second ranked bears fifteen no deadly. Somebody asked me a question on twitter yesterday. So let me present it to you if zaka and baylor both inner selection sunday undefeated. Which team is the number. One overall seed in the ncaa tournament. I- address this exact thing in my power rankings. This week baylor's the number one overall seed. That's not going to be up for too much debate. I don't think baylor will have at that point. Accrued many more quad one wins and road wins tougher opponents in gonzaga. So i don't think it will be up for much debate and that's before you even get into the question of whether or not Those teams have not played in their league tournaments. I think you're right. The question was presented to me about the number one overall seed the instability tournament. And then about whether i would adjust the top twenty five and one and i will not adjust the top twenty five and one i if i will not drop gonzaga from number one unless it loses. And that's been one of my kinda rules since i've been doing this job. I don't punish number one teams unless they actually lose. The only time can remember. Doing it is win duke zairian cam and who was the other guy that played with them. Norlander see if you can remember this time that team duke zay on camera. tish yeah. He's from canada. Third third pick in the draft of first team. All american show trae jones. Trae jones was on that team. But it wasn't him jack white. It was not yet check why it was not the third pick. Javelin delory in the subsequent. Nba draft. His name was started with all our in the next letter was j. rj. They call him rj. Oh i think i've heard this guy You're gonna have to help me with the last name though. Rj bay. That's right that's right that's right. Yeah that was The yeah he was the other player on this. So that's the only time. I can remember dropping a number one team without the number one team. Losing just silly to have anybody other than duke number one after that performance against that opponent on that stage. So i've done it before. But i will not do it. In in this scenario to punish gonzaga without losing would be to punish them. Strictly on league affiliation. And i won't do that but that said you're exactly right. Both schools have five quadrant. One wins right now. But according to the net the current net rankings baylor has six more quad one opportunities in the regular season. Gonzaga has just one so baylor could end up and likely would end up with basically twice as many quad wins as gonzaga. So i agree with you on selection sunday. If both teams are undefeated baylor based on the resume would be number one overall seed regardless of whether the people and the top twenty five one or anything else actually reflects
GameStop Stock Soars as Reddit Investors Take On Wall Street Bets
"Stop the video game retailer. Stock has rallied over six hundred eighty percent this month and in the last couple of days the stocks volatility has pretty much everyone talking. So what's going on. First of all game stop is for the average mall going consumer dying brand a relic of simpler times when we used to have to physically go to the store and wait in line for the newest call of duty or for the latest harry potter book. So it's no surprise. That game stop has been a target for wall street shortsellers its demise has been foregone conclusion. So short and game stop. That is betting that game stop would continue to. Depreciate could have been a good bet except short-selling is risky and your losses if you lose that bad or basically limitless since there's no cap on how valuable the company has bet against could become so even riskier if stock you've shorted starts going up. You can essentially cut your losses without getting too in the weeds market mechanics here. When a lot of short seller's designed to cut their losses on a shorted stock. That's now suddenly going up it triggers. What's called a short squeeze. Demand goes up. Supply goes down. Price goes up more shortsellers. Try to cut their losses. It's a vicious cycle and one that can result in massive losses for their shortsellers and giant prophets for those who've invested in the stock on the way up which is when a popular reddit. Forum called wall street bets figured out that game stop was the most shorted stock in the us markets. It wasn't hard to convince reddit users in the forum to buy up enough stock in game. Stop to trigger that short squeeze making retail investors of bundle and sticking it to the wall street big guys in the process. This was all encouraged in many ways by high profile investors with a hefty social media presence. Jamaa only petia tweeted that he'd bet on the stock increasing himself cameron winkle voss of the winkle vi- suggested he might go along on the stock and must only tweeted that he was aware of the situation just aware of the situation in game. Stop took off again. In after hours. Trading and to wall street bets credit. The plan worked amid game. Stops rally shortsellers on wall. Street have accumulated over five billion dollars in losses year to date and that includes nine hundred million loss on monday and one point six billion lost on friday. As you're about to hear hedge fund. Melvin capital took an enormous loss on the bet so much so that rumors of bankruptcy were swirling on that wall street. Bet sub reddit. But the founder of melvin told our own andrew ross sorkin. The rumors aren't true. Here's andrew now some breaking news this morning on this game stop story. We've been reporting all morning. Having talked to gay. Plock into runs. Melvin capital gay. Plotkin saying that. Melvin capital has been out closed out its position in the stock force. That company was Firm i should say with short looks like lost a ton of money but short that company up through Before the end of the close yesterday but Gabe saying that They got out yesterday afternoon. Of course the question is what happens now. Game stop a game. Stop shares Melvin capital had to take in an additional close to three billion dollars in new capital citadel. Coming to the rescue along with point seventy two. This is a remarkable saga With game stop so many of these investors no really no longer really investing on the fundamentals of what's happening against up but more just continue to push up the stock and we've seen so many folks like you on musk. Go take to twitter about it. Chihua- polly fanning the flames. So there's a lot of fan fan. Flame fanning taking place right now big questions about regulators where they are what they should be doing a lot of criticism and critique online as saying that if you think manipulation what do you think wall street is doing everyday to us the retail investors so. There's a sort of a pop psychology dynamic at play. And i think we're all we're all learning and try and understand what it means but also what it means in the future for the ability of retail investors to get together on places like read it and other places Form an army of sorts and try to push up The stocks in in certain cases like this. So i'm at a loss for words. Joe i really am where are the regulators and is this just the beginning situation. We all do have a lot to say on this but you you obviously have a lot to san. That's interesting but obviously the plane with the calls. And you're you're seeing calls that are one hundred dollars out of the money going for nineteen dollars and things that you've got markups going from two billion to twenty five billion. Obviously everything you're saying we understand. This is this is a game obviously and these guys. When i put five dollars on a ncaa game that. I don't care that much about that's the same as jemaah putting a couple of hundred grand on some calls or lan or any of the guys were talking about this. I think it's kind of responsible. The kind of laughing about it laughing all the way to the bank. But you know there are market makers that have to take. How'd you like to be short some of these calls. Can you imagine being short some of these calls. Especially if you're not covering i mean you can lose. You can lose ten times your money. Unlike a regular investment where only lose one hundred percent. I mean this this this makes this makes bitcoin look like t-bills if you think there's speculation and crypto when you when you look at something like and now they're looking for the next mark right they'll find another game stop once they're done with game stop but in the meantime there's gonna be blood all over understand why i understand why elon musk is doing it. He hates the shorts. They've you know he's right. Thinks it's a game where he's playing a game to understand he's playing the game too. I don't understand why tomatoes doing this. I don't understand why the winkle loss guys doing this. I mean this is i. It's nothing about me. Said too much money it and if you if you think people look unkindly at the wealthy at this point like wait till you see what happens with with the retail investor who gets sucked into thing and gets caught in the trap with who can't afford to lose the money like these guys are doing. I'll tell you the thing there. There really is a merry band of retail investors. Out there both already but increasingly and this is what i think even more concerning i spent a lotta time night reporting this out but also spending time on the in some of these rooms there are places people are going out into encrypted rooms onto telegram onto signal where they where they effectively are planning their next raid. Where they're trying to look to say. Okay where can we do. You know who can we take down next. In this case it was capital that they were seeking to take down. That's why i think the news today that they're out maybe potentially a turning point. I don't know. I don't. I don't know what turns this stock back into some kind of a normal
Hawkeyes can't back up their lofty ranking, suffer humbling loss to Indiana
"Leg. I think we might need to revisit. The word realistic. The definition is as follows. Having were showing a sensible and practical idea of what can be achieved or expected. I bring this up because on wednesdays. Podcast i asked you if you believed indiana had a realistic chance to win at iowa on thursday night you said no. I said no. Just didn't seem like a sensible or practical idea of what can be achieved or expected and for at least three reasons. One iowa is clearly better than indiana in the season to iowa would have the best player on the court. In the form of luca garza an three iowa was inside carver. Hawkeye arena where it inner with a nine and record. Obviously you know what happened next score indiana iowa sixty nine not n- is roy j carver famed industrialists rolling over in his grave. Norlander what was it like for you to watch and unrealistic thing. Become a reality late thursday night. Miriam webster defines the word regret as sorrow aroused by circumstances beyond one's control or power to repair. That game was out of my control. It was out of your control of conduct or an event giving rise to regret undesirable unwelcome. And as that game played out and as it got into the second half. I thought this is interesting. This is look this indiana getting a good win. I was really going to take this loss all right. You know what this is. This'll be something good to talk about on the. Oh wait a second. What did we say at the end of the last podcast. We said too much did we. Did we call it a little too far. Yeah did i have someone tweet at me. A link to the definition of realistic. You bet your ass. I did congrats indiana fans although you might be super conflicted this morning here because obviously you want your team to do well. Obviously a decent portion of you just love basking self loathing when archie miller doesn't performance walls coaches. You'd like you got a good win here. This is the kind of win. That's gonna get you into the ncaa tournament. like i. i think the hoosiers someway somehow they're going to be in that incident tournaments if it's because of a win like this. Are you suggesting that was a cpap win was well. They're not maybe it was. How about a vaulting win. They might not have been in prior to this game. Get the win vaulted. And that's even better than the seat. Bump vault vault launch it right there like a catapult right over great job i indiana i gotta figure this is probably a top five win of the season considering iowa's a top five team in the metrics. It is a game on the road again even though it's not a true true wrote environment. It's still a so. This is one of the five wins and think anyone has had the season and india. It wasn't like the squeaked it out they got it done. They beat an iowa team that i checked late last night. I'll bring up right now. Yes i was still third at ken palm as we report this podcast on friday morning and the win by twelve so a wonderful job. Clearly you know. That's the kind of game if i speak to. The hawk is real quick. And you're right. I actually have in my notes cover. Hawkeye's rolling over in his nest. Not his grave. He's really covering his nest That defense there is obviously problematic for iowa. That's the that's the kind of game. Where whether you're a fan. Or just a bit of a skeptic of the hawkeyes early this is why i don't know if i can take them to get to the final four. I still can get there. It was just a disappointing performance. What you see on on thursday night and what was your primary take away. Okay let me tell you. I experienced this indiana comeback. So obviously we we. We have a new president now and the country has been an interesting place to live in recent weeks and a guy with the high school with who was like a genuinely good guy but we see the in completely different ways In probably every election of our our lives. I've voted one way. And he has voted another and so he reached out to me and he said hey. Listen i i want to try to better understand like i keep hearing people say you know you need to listen to other people and i want to try to understand in an and you can see if you would it. Be okay if i reached out to you every once in a while and say. Hey well what do you think about this. What do you think about that and he. Here's what i think about this. And what am i missing. And i thought it was like a sweet gesture and so i said sure. Of course i'd be happy to talk gone. Eleven biden voters chatty to you like that by the role of the roles are reversed. And i said you know what i of course and anytime you wondering why so. Why does gp think this way. Or why do i think this way. And you want to bounce off of me. And i'm here of course.
Los Angeles Lakers' LeBron James: 'It would be great' to visit White House to celebrate NBA championship
"Talking about the championships of the west and actually champions of the entire nba. The lakers now with the current president. That is in office currently leaving office on the twentieth of january. The brian james and the los angeles lakers have actually had talks. A visiting the visiting the white house after president elect joe biden takes office. Now this is going to be something amazing because the last time actually we saw a we we saw a team visit. The white house from the nba was actually in november of two thousand and sixteen men. That was a while ago. And yes it was lebron. James and the cleveland cavaliers. So right now. There's been a drought of players. It's actually going in and visited but they said that After january twentieth pendant on how things they may be going go ahead and doing so right now with the first half of the season that scheduled already out is not showing that washington has a home game with Against the lakers to go ahead and give a broad and opportunity to do so but they have not released the second half of the schedule as of yet a lot of things that are taking place with covid nineteen and seeing how they are responding to the pandemic with life outside of the bubble. The are waiting until a little bit closer towards the second half of the season to go ahead and get that released so we are waiting on pins and needles and hopefully that does
Tennessee Issues Statement on Termination of Nine Employees and Jeremy Pruitt
"Tarrant tennessee. No parting of the ways. No resignation fired. Jeremy pruitt after an internal investigation the chancellor of the university chancellor plowman earlier today the personnel actions. We are announcing. Today are an indication of the gravity of what we've discovered today. Athletic director fomer and i issued termination letters to the following assistant. Football coaches brian. Nita meyer and shelton felt also four members of our on campus football recruiting staff additionally our director and assistant director of football player personnel and finally a football analyst quality control coach. So what are what are Council has told us is it. We're looking at level one and level two violations. I don't know yet yet. Exactly how many or exactly the specifics of it the chancellor earlier today and we have the live coverage here blake top. Mayer has covered the story from the beginning and he joins us early evening from knoxville blake. Good evening thanks for being with us and before we get to specific just describe. What this day has been like in knoxville. Well obviously the big news that we've been waiting for call for a probably at least a month now and in the the question for at least the lack last week or more has been. Is jeremy Going to get outright fired for cause or is he going to get fired with a settlement for reduced by out. I mean i. It felt like inevitable that a coaching change was coming. And we've got the answer today. That pruitt's being fired for cause. Tennessee does not intend to pay him. One cent of his twelve point six million dollar buyout also included in the four. 'cause firings Were systems. Brian eater myron shelton felton in the termination letter to jeremy pruitt tennessee chancellor plowman outlined six four. 'cause provision of jeremy pruitt's contract University believe he violated and of course all stems to be ongoing investigation into sweeping recruiting if violations That have occurred or are believed to have occurred within tennessee's program during pruitt's watch like so many things unpack the chancellor said. She threw her own program under the bus. And i understand the tendency to pile on but having covered many of these before as you have. That was really unprecedented address. That if you don't mind it's obvious that the chancellor is frustrated beyond frustrated with the the amount of malfeasance that i think she sees within the football program. I mean these. I think it's fair to call these sweeping violations. And what she believes they're going to be major violations. stemming from the football program She she mentioned that she was stunned. By both the number of interactions and the number of people involved in the infractions. And so you know. It doesn't leave tennessee in a great position to come out on the other side of this and say you know hey. Nca take it on us there. There really wasn't that much bad going on here. You know you've seen a lot of athletic departments kind. Play that card with the ncaa play hardball with the ncaa and say that they weren't breaking rules. I think tennessee is is quite clearly taking me approach of Of admitting its its mistakes. upfront here Firing the people that believes are responsible for the mistakes and then going forward is going to have to pivot and try to likely self imposed penalties and hope that that can fend off Some of the harshest punishment from from the ncaa but it does leave it in a difficult scenario here as it goes forward not only with the ncaa but as it tries to hire and athletic director and it tries to attract a football coach.
NCAA Men's 2021 March Madness Will Take Place In A Bubble In Indiana
"This spring sixty eight. Men's basketball teams from colleges and universities across the country will gather at indianapolis for march madness that includes athletes coaches and staff along families and press. The organizers goal is to create a bubble similar to what the nba did over the summer. Indianapolis was already set to host the final four this year which nc double a senior vice president of basketball. Dan gavitt says made it a logical choice. We knew when we made the decision to come to one geographic location. Having as many of those venues in the city of indianapolis in marion county in particular was important for the health costs to be very similar. Gavitt says the city's long history of hosting sporting events should help the. Ncaa is headquartered here in the city. And there's enough venues. Hotels and transportation teams will stay in the four downtown hotels all connected to lucas oil stadium. One of the six sites to be used for games but the move will likely be a financial blow to cities that were set to host some of the games this year including lexington dallas dayton and san jose. The decision is welcome news for the indiana lodging association. It's president patrick. Tam says last year it's all twenty percent of restaurants permanently close and two thirds of the hotels facing bankruptcy. Now news is is indicative of the best news for hotels since march. This is tremendous news for a lot of people that have been out of work or they now be called and talked with end. The demand for rooms could increase the nc double a. decides to allow fans to attend at a time when indiana's averaging more than seventy deaths per day from covert nineteen university of california berkeley epidemiologist. John's schwartzberg says is important to put public health before sports news standpoint. There's every reason recent plan for it if they have to have every reason for cancelling it is. Things aren't fanatically but state and local officials like governor. Eric holcomb argue. That india can handle thousands of guests. And keep them safe will have the place spruced up and ready to go. Just like we do for the indy. Five hundred just like we do for final four. This is the only time that i hope this ever happens. And i say that. As the potential host of all these gains college basketball's march madness is scheduled to start march sixteenth and run through april fifth for npr news. I'm samantha horton in

All eyes are on Justin Fields. Can he handle the pressure?
"Teams around the nation that I have an inside track on. I don't have one with Ohio state but I believe with an outsider's perspective looking in. I I would imagine it had to be a year of growth off the field for Justin Fields because he's at all this Heisman hype he's gotten all this attention. He's been everywhere in the media and then against Northwestern he had some back in Northwestern the Indiana game. He held down the hall a bit too long. He tried to make big plays he tried to I think Force plays downfield rather than throw the ball the way And I thought that those were those mistakes he made against Northwestern Indiana. We're kind of a really kind of a the all the pressure from the media manifesting and a guy trying to deliver on our expectations that have been laid upon
Why ESPN is killing it with college football right now
"New Year's Day in the college football playoff semifinals, Ohio State beat Clemson, 49 to 28. And first of all, it's a fun game to watch. I really want to give a shout-out tspn something. I very rarely do the presentation of the game. Awesome, the whole game felt epic and I mean that the hype package before the game. I was so excited and then I really was glued to my TV. The first half of this game was amazing the second half drug on a little bit as a Ohio State pretty girl was going to win but shout out to ESPN and they did a great job and it's kind of kind of shocking actually like this game was so well done by ESPN and it's like it's such a superior product to Monday Night Football, which is all done by ESPN. It's like like why can't Monday Night Football be as good as this was I don't know maybe maybe a playoff atmosphere helps. I have no idea. But every time I watch a really hyped up big intended college football game on ESPN. It's really well
"ncaa" Discussed on What A Day
"ncaa" Discussed on What A Day
Interview With Stanford's Dick Gould
"One john wartime here this week. Sports illustrated tennis podcast. Hope everyone is doing well. No pro tennis events this week but a lot of scrambling behind the scenes trying to get a schedule for twenty twenty one as corona continues its blaze through the draw or the calendar As it were right now it looks like the australian open is going to start on february eighth. That's three weeks later than usual to count for quarantine remains to be seen. It looks like indian wells unfortunately will Cancel for twenty one or at least be postponed. Perhaps until the fall. Miami is a question. Mark will Pass on more news when we have it. Maybe they'll be more clarity by the time you listen to this podcast. Meanwhile today Two great guests very different In terms of the significant age gap. Here but i suspect They would rather like each other I guess dick gould. Who was the men's coach at stanford for almost forty years stanford one seventeen. Ncaa titles under coach gould fifty those players were all americans. He of course coached a Curly haired kid from long island. John mcenroe we talk a bit about that. A bit about the state of college. Tennis tickled sort of the john. Wooden figure who didn't just win a lot but it also is a paragon of virtue and the next person to say something ill of him will be the first. I would submit a glaring omission. He's not in the international tennis hall of fame. But this is a good conversation. We talk a lot talking about mcenroe. Talk about International players in college tennis talk a bit about head injuries as he is the vice chairman of a nonprofit Teach aids which creates health. Ed technology and is paying special attention. Head injuries Good conversation so here's the golden. And after him. We talked to brandon nakashima. Who took intro in between segments. So here's coach. Gould how are you do it. How you feel like everyone. I question we all ask. Is that have you your twenty twenty those. She's been good so far and You guys guys have been affected a little bit kobe. But so far would survive it and It just the families good The main thing for me of course in the so all those good but it's really effective. I working night stops stanford. Three years ago. I've been working on concussion case for nonprofit and and for video so pc and youth football and below the installaion stuff and it just a fulltime job. He can't go in the office. Fortunately everything we do is zoom so if one presumes john we complain about but where we eight million with you Know your it's allowed us economy to To keep functioning and some lab. I want to ask you about that especially well. We could jump too far ahead. But i don't know if you saw the decent. La times yesterday about the the stanford volleyball player. And yeah i did. I did see that actually. My granddaughter was director operations volleyball for eight years. During that time there's two sides to every story you know but it was a concussions are not uncommon vibe. I you know you go up to the spike in the bog. In your hands or you hitting the head and it's our first soapy. See was artistic swimming synchronized swimming. Believe it or not Gushes in that and everyone thinks football. But it's it's it's just amazing and very on another sports we'll talk about I can only think of one. I can only think of one instance off hand in tennis but roller to. I could remember we had a cup. We're we're doing a story law where people talk about the story on the got them. Whatever most of them are athletes about half icicle have college and we have a couple of ten stories in their kids. Get hit with a wall. In ben people are more settled some than others and it just I james wake of course one. But then there's a lot of slipped and fell much display lawyers for the usda all. I didn't think well. I've ever azarenka once. I guess you're right yeah exactly. There was an eight figure settlement mining. Something exactly i wanted to I said blah blah. I wanna talk college. But i also i'm just curious i wanna hear more about you. I mean i. I feel like everyone knows everyone knows dick. Gould stanford coach for more than forty years. It occurs to me. Maybe gula man. That's what you may come on side. You are often described But this is. This is someone who grew up in my hometown. It's near and dear to you. You're the john wooden college tennis. And some of that is about longevity and titles and wins and losses and some of this is about the lessons you imparted ana players. Who i'm sure you know. Speak glowingly of you. But i'm just curious. I don't know anything. i was telling somebody recently. I were you a player. How did you get into this crazy sport. I really don't know much about you. Pre stanford how did you actually come to us. We'll flamboyant and my folks didn't play it all from california. My dad's a form. And and i had a horse to ride all the time and a young kid and and my mom said well you're gonna take tennis wheels. The white freaking shorts downtown instead of my jeans and lee is what are you talking about. So do you wanna ride horses somewhere. Yeah what are you gonna take a less. And you may remember a gal on nancy. Chafee kind of eric mayor of She was maybe top ten in the world and her dad was my was the guy. Give me the lesson. you need everything. I did equate with those four. it was You step into the ball like rocky marciano steps of the bunch. You watched the ball. Come off the record lake road. Kind of what's coming on the pitches everything all of a sudden. It wasn't says he's it was a big thing and he made hitting a ballroom exciting. And i always worked in the summers but impl- sherman's but i i went to stanford and played on a team there and Got pretty good bye last year and Those days olmert sparse. I was but i. I got fairly good but there was no circuit And so you go out and play shamateuritism Do anything and nothing to show for it. And i had a job teaching offer. And i took that job in high school. And and and that was my vocation coaching in the absolutely love. It and it's been you appreciate my guys. I'm doing a book. Not a stanford. Tennis john but on either standing brilliant leadership on coaching in general. And it's i had guys who go to are still alive.

"The first year coach of the houston rockets concerning his disgruntled holdover star. James harden silence said he intended to give harden quote his space and then quote. I'm confident that he will be all in unquote will bun. Are you equally. Confident that hardware will be all end absolutely not. I don't believe that for a second. And by the way. Tony i said this to you last week and you say wait a minute. He's under contract for two years. And that's true and in most industries that would give the employer the leverage but not in the nba tone. We're a star like hard in the city like houston which has to have a star or they wouldn't come to the games. They have a star player. If james harden says i want out and sticks to it and he's out a couple of weeks they're going to have to trade. James harden not know at this point somebody in houston his sydell yet. We can make it uncomfortable. The only person is going to be uncomfortable is somebody not named james harden who made forty million last year and even if out half of this year is still going to be in line for twenty million. So james harden. They won't be comfortable. James harden is going to be playing elsewhere. So i'm gonna go point by point on that what they might say as. We just traded for a star in john wall and what the owner might say is. I'm getting crushed in my businesses which restaurants hotels and if james harden wants to sit out he can sit for the next two years for the duration of his contract. And i'm not paying them a dine but let me go back to the top of the story because i had brian windhorst on my podcast this morning. And like you said they're going to trade james harden. They're going to trade him. He said look at what they got with john wall. They gotta draft pick. He said they're gonna accumulate draft picks. And that's going to be their strategy. I would just say this in regards to stephen silence. Why don't know. I don't know how much standing he has mike. Because the person or persons that james harden and russell westbrook wanted at first were tie lou and then they wanted john lucas the owner tillman for tita. He wanted jeff van gundy and ablaze. Didn't want jeff van gundy and westbound so silas i. I don't know how long he's got when nobody seemed to want ever tony. That's a great point but even if he had some stature the nba player unlike anywhere else in professional sports even baseball with some guys have forced their way out these stars the biggest stars globally other than a handful also soccer stars who forced their way out of anything. They don't want those guys have all the leverage town and harden. Has it and you say for tina could just not to pay him. He ain't go up to do that if all his other businesses are hurting he gets a houston rockets in a position to be productive. When this thing is over meaning the pandemic so i. I don't see to be in that tough guy. I guess the hope is the john wall will come in there and be with james harden once but what i was john walsh college teammate. Boogie cousins is also on houston. What do they say. Oh we don't need him. We do ourselves well. We need this guy for. They can't do it themselves but maybe they can go to. Hardly say listen. Let's give this a shot. Maybe they can. Change hardens mind management. Ain't gonna change. It will accept with the trade. The other guys perhaps could do that. Let's move to the possibility of ohio state being ineligible for the big ten championship game. The fourth-ranked book is already missed games with illinois maryland. A cancellation by covid ridden michigan. Next week would leave. Ohio state one game shy of the six required to play in the conference title. Game was concert. Athletic director barry alvarez told the detroit news the big ten my need to revisit the rules tony would revisit be fair to everybody else in the seats. I believe i had this one right. I believe that three or four weeks ago. I sat on this very show. And i said if ohio state doesn't get to the magic number they'll change the magic number because they want to be an playoffs data. Wanna give all the money from the playoff to the sec and the acc and by the way they should want to so the big ten will do what they've already done. Make a rule tell you how great they are and they care about science and the care about the students and they care about everything else in the world but now we're going to play and they shouldn't play because people went to college to play football getting the games you can get in. I'm not angry about this. I just saw this coming tony. You weren't the only one. Let's pat ourselves on the back. So much i i was a person who's pretty intimately familiar with. What goes on in their conference. Said they will change it. They'll have to change it. And i think they should change. It is somebody who would rather see indiana or someone else on the eastern side of the winner's bracket come a couple of saturdays from now in indianapolis. I'd love to see that. But that even i really love to see it because it wouldn't be fair. Ohio states the best team in the conference without question and they ought to have the chance as defending champions at least a couple of times over to to prove that to defend that championship and make it in the name of the big ten conference to said playoff. So no i don't i don't even hear a pushback you know not having been in the midwest much lately but i don't hear any push back to that so yes you were right but you're right with a lot of other people so if if ohio states gotta get to six just find some teams in the big ten. That haven't played ohio state already and say you're going to play ohio state and if they can find six then make the number for whatever number you make it. Make it so that ohio state is eligible. Where the big ten got in trouble. Mike was making rules that make them selves. Look good and then they have to change the rules. Just go play football. That's what we want to see. yeah. I don't disagree on that. We're not gonna go back to the whole history of it because i don't see people making rules that make themselves look people make rules it with what they've got at the time and if you need to change the rules say hey change rule so shut up all right. Yeah i for following the sec. In anything that comes to higher education ever never. But there's another conference but.

"If possible to to reduce the chances of players doing it we saw high profile hold out with Ezekiel. Elliott this year that worked out for him in other one. We're seeing Melvin Gordon here. That obviously obviously hasn't worked out for him yet. Teams are looking down the road. If you're the New York giants saquon Barkley in two years could be in the exact same position Ezekiel Elliott just was and you don't WanNa be in a position from where you don't have him for training camp so it's it's another issue of control right. It's not money it's control owners. Versus players and the owners in this case are seeing some control erode because of the success of these player holdouts and the willingness of these players to engage in them and they want to do something to discourage and we talk about control. You're also talking about players now. Demanding Trades Allah Jalen Ramsey says he's sick we should acknowledge that but Adam silver's dealing with this in the NBA and he says it's a scourge scourge. How are they looking at it in the NFL well yeah if it got to the point where the that's their fear is that it turns into the NBA where players can go wherever they want but I mean I think the genie's out of the bottle here I mean players understand their value on a level that they didn't use to and they recognize their power on a level that they didn't use to and if you're a star player you have some leverage and we're seeing guys is flex it. I don't think the owners will succeed. In getting draconian penalties for holdouts put into the next day and I don't think they'll succeed in convincing star players that they have to stay put just because that's what their contracts says Dan. Thank you for joining us. I pleasure thank you. We were able to exercise some right here. Get your free right here just in case now turning into basketball Monday the NCAA level charges against the University of Kansas and it's basketball program including longtime coach bill self the NCAA says Kansas is guilty of a lack of institutional institutional control language for serious violations. Bill self came out swinging response this statement saying in part no secret that there's tremendous tremendous pressure on the NCAA to respond to the Federal Court proceedings involving college basketball in its haste and attempt to regain control the enforcement staff has created a false narrative regarding knee me and our basketball program for more we welcome ESPN senior writer Mark Schlabach Mark. We can talk about bill sells define in response the response from the school itself very much the same terms of tone absolutely seating no ground here whatsoever. What does that tell us. It's about the way they're going to approach this over the course of the ninety days they have to respond Jerry. It's clear Kansas has bill selves back. They Avid coaching staff back. I think there is some skepticism not only Kansas but other places around the country that the is actually gonNA come after a blue blood programs program like the Jayhawks in the past the enforcement staff the committee on infractions as an shown a lot of teeth when it came to the most successful programs most accessible coaches inches like bill self and I think given what transpired with North Carolina with the academic standing on the lack of penalties in that case I think it is involved in a lot of schools data coaches directors to your father. Does this speak to a strategy as you suggest that look. They're not going to touch us. We mean too much then the NCAA right now is in perhaps in historically precarious position being assaulted on all sides whether you're talking about the courts sports the FBI you're talking about if not the NCAA itself but it schools in the policies at those schools. We've got legislatures. New York and California trying to pay athletes elites is feeling perhaps on the part of the schools that the NCAA's week and we don't have to bend now but I think there's an assault on amateurism the amateurs model I think there's been a massive shift in public perception that these kids should beginning paying in some cases regardless of getting out Howard getting paid you know see where it goes with these new laws in states across the country but you know talking to coaches which is around the country. They tell me you know if rules are in place we have to follow the rules for nothing else competitive balance and I think we're GONNA you know I. I think we'll just have to wait and see is not. Nothing's GonNa come to an end anytime soon. Kansas and the other schools involved in this probably aren't going to get in front of the committee on infractions until you'll next summer or a spring twenty twenty. There's a lot of silk play out if the school continues to back him to the hilt is bill self safe here are his assistant safe bill sell safe as long as they don't get hammered aw made it clear that they're going to support him and they don't think that he was intimately involved in these payments to players. There is no proof that he was was involved. There are text messages between he and Adidas consultant. TJ Gas Nala says any real guys. You can infer what you want with with that but you know it's GonNa be interesting because it's a it's an interesting strategy by insane forces staff suggested the Adidas consultants like Tj Gas Nola were boosters for Kansas. Jayhawks attorneys are GONNA attack that argument as well and of course because of the time line here. We're not expecting any ramifications on the upcoming season for the Jayhawks expected to be one of the best teams in college basketball mark. Shaw aw we always appreciate your insights. US Olympic women's ice hockey team also in the b-block today new USA Today report about the NFL and how team screen coaches for allegations ends of domestic violence or more precisely how summit failed to do so this of course against the backdrop of the League's insistence that it will hold players accountable in the post ray Rice Erin for more. We're joined by Rachel accent. She is the reporter who wrote this story and reported it for USA Today. Rachel what what is your reporting uncover about the due diligence that's taking part in the league and with individual teams certainly certainly showed that it seems to be lacking we looked into the backgrounds of NFL coaches in the league last year and we found issues with domestic violence easy easy to spot in public records and we don't did not find an excuse me a lot of due diligence on the part of the team's perfect example Schuyler Fulton who you you showed was a receivers coach for the bucks last year. He had an arrest for domestic violence. The charges were later dismissed after he completed a pretrial diversion in but the records in that case indicated multiple women expressing fear of him that he had had threatening behavior in then in two thousand sixteen exte- a few years later he was working Juku and the school there was warned about behavior that was similar to that yet when he was hired by the bucks a a few months later they don't seem to have called the coach that he worked for their and we know at least two of the women named in those records contacted as well it we're talking about. We're not just talking about a couple of examples. You wrote about several examples in your reporting again in this story in USA. Today and you ask the League you you went to Park. Have you so to speak and ask them well. What do you have to say about. These guys getting hired despite this in their backgrounds. What did they say. What was the response well. Of course we asked for Commissioner Roger Goodell he was the one who five years ago in that press conference in the wake of the where he writes case promised League would do more that it had a role to play here. They declined our interview requests for him. Ryan McCarthy a spokesman for the League told us that the vetting of coaches is entirely up to the teams they know so that they should be vetting them but how they do that there's no role for the NFL to play Brian McCarthy said I asked. Is there any sort of guidance or policy. There is not so the League has taken a very hands off approach in this area well beyond saying that it's up to the teams and they should be doing the vetting if they asked us. We'll so help them. Out was any anything else expressed about. Perhaps this isn't the way it should be done. These guys shouldn't be getting jobs in the NFL bill. Well our question was how much did they seek to know this. We don't know the answer because the team's avoided talking to us and then how did they assess it every every expert that we talked to on domestic violence including Rita Smith who is an advisor to the league said it would be best practice for these teams to seek and know as much information as they can and then they can make an assessment. Is this someone we want to be part of it. We're GONNA sation how they dealt with these issues.

"Welcome outside lines. I'm Jeremy Schaap later in the this show report on the domestic violence red flags the NFL might be missing when it comes to hiring and the NCAA takes aim at the University of Kansas but I in our big story the Washington redskins a once proud team that is now accustomed to misery this is Dan Snyder's twenty first season as the owner of a franchise that had had been one of the NFL's elite which hasn't won a home playoff game in twenty years last night. Washington fell to Owen three and was blown out by the bears the reality starting to sink in with the underperformance of a defense that was thought to be solid going into the season or not just to deepen the entire football team Jay GRUDEN. I think he's on borrowed time here in Washington a performance like this tonight on Monday night football the offense has largely been lifeless penalties the owner Dan Snyder he wants better with an owner who's extremely unpopular not coincidentally also extremely unsuccessful for what does it mean to be a redskins fan. These days Washington Post sports columnist varies for Luga has been all over the dysfunction in his latest column asks the question. What is this season even about all right bury. So will you answer that question for us now. Well I mean we can break down the specifics of a football game and why they lost on Monday night in embarrassing fashion but I think what that Owen three start gets to are the macro questions about this this franchise who should be the coach does that even matter. The Dan Snyder is on his eighth coach Jay Gruden. Should they immediately turn to a rookie quarterback who's going to be minding that rookie quarterback teaching that rookie quarterback going forward with Twain Haskins and what is the front office structure their Bruce L. and the team president has had a variety leave responsibilities with his over his decade with the team. None of it has led to success. He's fifty nine in eighty in his tenure there. I think any sort of minutia look the redskins right. Now is beside the point you need to look at the major questions about this franchise right minutia to focus on just one game like last night's blowout route but at this point in time when you look at the arc of Daniel Snyder's ownership over the last two decades are we at the neigh- deer in which would be saying something you're talking about a franchise that in midstream of one season called in an offensive coordinator to take AAC overplay calling who had been running Bingo Games at an old folks home the week before and I'm barry exactly exactly so I I think it's like it feels like they're all the time around here because as you've said it was a once proud franchise the people who are in the core of the fan base in their forties and fifties he's who were raised as Redskins fans under gibbs and Rigaud and thighs men and all that are trying to raise their kids in that way and it's not working because it's not fun to go to the to the stadium. It's not a pleasurable experience. You have very low expectations that you're going to get a good product winning product and it all turns back to the owner her who has not produced a single eleven win season in his twenty one seasons as owner. I mean it is amazing as you say Berry. It's five winning seasons in twenty seasons. That's it's three ten win seasons and two nine win seasons. He's never had a team that you could characterize as excellent. What is his is self awareness here. Does he recognize deep down. We all know he grew up is a big fan of this team does he does. He know that he's a failure. Here's an owner. It's really impossible for us to know because he is so walled himself off from the public. There's never an expression of I am the owner of this team. I care about this as much as you do fans in and more it is on me to fix it. He doesn't put himself out to say those things he does. Not Put Bruce Allen his self selected team president with a link to those glory days whose dad was George Allen the former redskins coach he he those people never expressed abreast publicly what they think the direction of the franchise is and should be they leave whoever the coach in the moment is hang them out to dry and say this is what's going on the Trent Williams hold or this is why we made this draft pick. It's really an odd odd state of affair. Here's the thing right in the NFL. The League is built built in such a way. There's no relegation like Europe. If you have a lousy record you get high draft picks. It's there's a salary cap. It's built to prevent this kind of you've continuous misery. You would think there would be a breakthrough if nothing else just through sheer luck and that's what's mystifying about it we now. It's not a small sample hillside anymore. It is the twenty first year of his ownership. They are on their eighth coach and it's what leads me to believe that anybody who's in this environment as the head coach can't be judged in the job solely on what he does here because no one has succeeded and I'm talking about Mike Shanahan two-time Super Bowl winning coach who came here and failed Joe Gibbs who had won the super bowl's here came back and couldn't get them further than they had been Everybody okay who walks in the door walks out tarnished in some fashion as you said berries for Luga just said eight head coaches to playoff wins Berry. Thank you for joining us. Thanks Jeremy and is very just mentioned the season of discontent. It's continuing for Trent Williams. It's been playing out in the media since early. June when left tackle didn't and show up for the first day minicamp by holding out. He's calling himself millions of dollars finds. Mr Earnings he was dot forty thousand dollars per day missed in training camp now his miss game checks accounting for more than six hundred thousand dollars per week when considering loss bonus opportunities through week three the overall tally climbing climbing into the four million dollar range in the meter is still running for more on Trent Williams to hold out left tackle for the Washington Redskins we welcome in our ESPN ESPN NFL insider here Dan Graziano. I thought I was going to see on the Monitor you sitting right here with what's going on with. Trent Williams. Of course there wasn't just it wasn't just money. There was surgery as well spring and you look that graphic you guys out four million dollars. Obviously this is not just about money or else you no he'd be there. Yes there's two years left on his contract and maybe he wants more but my understanding and Trent Williams and his people have been extremely quiet on this. It's been tough to get information but my understanding thing is that it's tied to that. Medical issue had in the off season. He has issues with members of the medical staff. The training staff of the team doesn't want to be a part of the organization as long as they are. Dr And he's willing to sit out until they trade him or whatever he's made a lot of money in his career. It's not like he needs this so so far he has held firm and said. I'm not going back there and that speaks with getting out in terms of the culture around the team. I mean if you have a former number one number four overall draft pick who's been that great for. He doesn't want to be there anymore for how much they need him. We watch the game last night. I mean obviously that's a tough test against the bears front but Trent Williams is one of the top four or five left tackles in the game and that may be underselling or selling him so yeah it would make a huge difference to whatever they're trying to do on offense right now be at case keenum be Dwayne Haskins talk about Dwayne Haskins plays. I'm sure they would rather have their left tackle before they do that so yeah. He's he's one of the very best players on their team and they miss him. It's nothing you were talking about holdouts of course in the NFL but it seems like the trend has been accelerating accelerating and your reporting tells us that the front offices of all these teams Park Avenue. They're getting fed up. They want to try tried to address this in a strategic way. What is the thinking now. During the current round of collective bargaining negotiations owners have proposed strengthening ranking the penalties for training camp holdout at this point. You can be fined forty thousand dollars a day for missing camp. You can find a game check for missing a preseason game. They want to make that even more severe ear..

"At the same time. College athletes were gaining a new type of leverage. The growing doing voice of athletes through social media was giving them a voice that they really had never had before and more athletes started speaking out not just about wanting money but needing it for instance. Kansas is Ben mclemore talked about an impoverished childhood where his mother sometimes had to sell food stamps to pay bills and you know Kansas is one of the most storied and richest college basketball programs in the country the University of Connecticut garbage as Napier said even amid the media glare of the final four twenty fourteen that he sometimes sometimes went to bed hungry because of NC rules restricting how many meals schools could give athletes. I was like I said this hungry nights. I'm able to eat and I still got to play tomorrow mark capabilities and sometimes it's that way it really was striking and I think his message so resonated because it was amid the setting that remember is earning the NCAA apparatus itself almost two billion dollars. People were really were very outraged. I mean race must also play a role in this because many top players in the air black including I think every player that we've talked about so far and they're often playing at majority white universities so it's their labor really that's earning all the money that they're not getting a Sharon Orrin. Yes it's true that at high profile at like departments generally football and men's basketball teams generate most of the revenue and those teams in many cases are predominantly African American so there is this notion that african-american athletes are helping earn this revenue to essentially support support the rest of the athletic department and yet not being able to share in any significant portion of that revenue themselves and how is the incidentally responding during in this period when athletes were speaking out well you know they really did respond in cases where there was a public outcry so for instance when when Napier talked what about going to bed hungry dancy very quickly changed its rules and allowed US schools to offer unlimited meals for athletes which in hindsight is sort of a no brainer as incidents like Napier's got attention. The outcry wasn't just a one off. Public sentiment was actually changing in two thousand thirteen seventy one percent of people agreed that a scholarship was compensation enough within just four years that number dropped by ten percentage points but that does mean that sixty percent of people still support the NC double A.'s position and among its supporters are some former players. I I feel like I have a little credibility knowledge about this because when I was at the when I was at the University of Florida I think my Jersey was one of the top selling jerseys around the world last week league former quarterback. Tim Tebow went on ESPN one of the most prominent broadcasters of college football in made an impassioned case against California's new law and yes. I know we live in a selfish culture where it's all about us but we're just adding and piling it onto that we're changes what's special about college football fan we turned it into the NFL advocates for keeping things the same like Tim tebow argue that money would skew recruitment high school recruits would just go or they could make the most money but the woman who co-authored California's bill was listening to a different argument Nancy skinner as Berkeley Democrat and she was inspired by hearing a speech she heard a few years ago by sports economist Andy Schwartz who has been pretty active in criticizing. NCAA and its rules curbing athlete compensation station. I think she just saw a chance to change something. You know when this bill was first introduced. It had some opposition. There were some people who who voted against it. It's it's been modified slightly since its introduction but the interesting thing is that as the NCAA has pushed back more and more lawmakers have voted in favor of this bill so oh in fact it's possible that the NCAA pushed back galvanized California legislators and prompted them to vote it through unanimously which they did and and how is the NC Double A. responded pretty forcefully. It sent a letter to California Governor Gavin newsom calling the bill unconstitutional. It's basically said you no hey we're working on this issue and we should have a chance to find some workable way to allow athletes to somehow benefit from their name image and likeness us and I think that legislators just said you know. Essentially we don't trust you and we're not. GonNa wait so here's our move in its letter the NC Double A. urged the state to reconsider the bill the NCAA also reaffirmed its long standing position that athletes are students not not employees.

"I gotta ask you carbohydrates sheet of integrity is now developing it's changing rapidly as the clock the hours. The you know, what is the sand that goes through the hourglass? It's all happening. It's evolving as tie, and it goes, really fast. I mean, you think about it from noon on Thursday. You know, you have sixty four teams by the time. You get the Sunday night you're down to sixteen. It goes very quickly. But I mean, tomorrow's like deja vu. We got a little wash rinse repeat? My thing is I'm already looking ahead with this sheet of integrity to some of these games that are already sat like, Maryland LSU. Are you leaning any direction in these games? Also, Minnesota Michigan state Murray state, Florida state Auburn Kansas already on the docket for Saturday. Yeah. I mean, if the Kansas team that I saw today against northeastern shows up against Auburn on Saturday and the Auburn team that I saw today shows up I think Auburn is gonna be in for a lot of trouble. Now, I liked I picked Auburn to win this game. But Kansas doubting. Well, not dowdy. But because Kansas is not look good all year. Right. They played northeastern today. Fairness. I thought would give them a you know, a game. And they didn't in the second half. They got their doors blown away. So I'm a little nervous about the Auburn Kansas game. No doubt about that. The other games. Look, I I'm still on LSU. Even though it's Maryland instead of Belmont. I'm still going to be on them. So your analogy over Maryland. Yeah. I'm still going to be on Michigan state. Even though it's Minnesota instead of Louisville. We're going to be there. And I'm still going to be on Florida state to beat Mary Murray state. So I mean, everything's pretty much status quo from me, I've lost anybody yet Murray state could be the loyal ramblers of twenty nine thousand nine you think that they're the team. Everybody wants to go. They could absolutely do that. I mean, Florida state for the first what you wanna say thirty thirty five minutes today. Vermont gave them a hard time. Vermont was that was a single digit game almost the whole way between Vermont and Florida state today. So and Murray. I think the catamounts are really good team. Right. But they don't play the kind of material that Florida's stage dealing with marriages say this you gotta be reminded by more than. The line was telling you gotta win that game by at least fifteen if you ask me, your Florida state. You're in the ACC, you're banging with the heavies. Some people think you're the one of the top seven teams in the country. I I would think most people think they are. And then you're messing around with Vermont. Now, I get it. It's a tournament game. So everything's different is pressure through the knows. What's crazy is watching these kids? You know, obviously when they lose these coaches, and it ends so quickly. It's like I mean, it is literally the door slams, and you're like shower boss flight home, it's over. I mean, it ends really harshly for the losers and the winners. Go back there. Room shower. Go watch another game, then go back to the hotel and get ready for breakfast. And and another day of practice, and then they'll play Saturday, so Friday, they get a chill the most and have fun all day and the other ones, you're going home. It is crazy tournament. So I was on an idea asked me about it was on five ninety. They asked me. Did you hear that guy? I heard a little bit of it. Yeah. Did you hear what I said about? They asked me if I think if this was my favorite sporting event. I didn't I did not hear that part. How did you respond? How do you think? I responded. Because it's such a huge gambling event. I'm going to say that it was definitely up there for you or at the top. But it was it at the top. I don't know. NFL playoffs for you. Cia Stanley Cup. What's wrong with you? Before. Because because I'm looking at it from shrank lately have you not been getting any leg on. What is this? Did you hear what he said to me football? What did he say baseball? Mean what I'm saying is our hockey this guy, you remember this guy. I thought this was from gambling aspect that from favorite sporting event. That's good. I once again rattled off the importance of the Stanley Cup over women and children good. So, you know, the the penguins go first, and then, you know, everybody comes after that say thirty four seed comes in close second based on her twenty years with me. And then, you know, the kids are twelve and. What are the fifteen and twelve almost? So there's fifteen and twelve years, so they go three four, and then you know, dog five but penguins, number one suppress, Doug. Even makes the top ten. I'm surprised I should probably put the Steelers in five and then dogs six even with the pirates before the dog come to think of it, pirates, scissors a hoosiers. Nine now behind the dog. You gotta get rid of that dog. Listen to you. You gotta watch bloodline strew the dog ranks higher than the pro baller. Cannot believe this guy. Honestly. I just I just broke into a full on sweat. I have a full body. He I'm having. I'm having like a palpitations avenue. A heat thing like a stroke heart arrhythmia, I'm having like a skipped red mea like worse than going to the prostate exam over the lustrous Carver high and the great hockey fan that he is the I'll see biogas the captain of all captain and Tonelli's this guy doesn't mention I honestly thought you were talking about gambling is unbelievable. I don't know what is happening here though. This is thought you were doing like a gambling. Figured it had the tie the gambling. I mean, wouldn't that be also the best morning of gambling this? This is better to gamble on talking about there's a game every night for two and a half months. I'm betting on. And I bet on that on. Plus minus on those first four days of the NCAA tournament are gamblers pag on plan is that like you get a free phone at the at the phone when you get a new cell phone buy one get one free. I give you a little plus minus goal and a half little Jimmy. And then you got your boycott likes to play that we're in Vegas. He plays at grand salami. There's nothing better when I see him at the bar in the morning, and he's like, I got the grand salami role today. Hello. It was fun being in Toronto. One other note, they do their updates. They start with hockey. God bless him. It was like a religious experience for me. The sports gas started with hockey news. I thought it was great because all we ever get. Here's the same crap. No disrespect to you. Mark. I love you. You're fantastic on the show. And I've always liked you. I'm a big fan of yours. You know, that's true. But honestly, you've never lead with hockey one since I've known you. And if you did you'd be fire, which is why I've never lived. You think he'd slip one and at one thirty in the morning one nine maybe. But he won't do it. Because he knows what will happen. I mean, this guy that runs this place of you, even talk hockey gives you the business. Thin ice as it is. About hockey Jesus Christ. No one's talking about. Man that bad. "I don't get to see them too. Too much until they get into school. They, there's only a handful of kids that were talking about for sure that are really elites that I said could be lottery picks, I'm, you count them every year and others. There's some kids, maybe some second or third year that have gotten into that. But coming out of high school is only Cup. There's very few LeBron James, let's face it, but there's a lot of very talented kids, but they're of a limited number and the NBA's not gonna give money away. If you can't play, they're not going to suspect your ability. This could be for years, although they knew stockpiling as we've seen to where, why is he leaving? You know, they want to get to meet or real financial rewards at the end of that which he contract. So I just think that's a big move forward guy feels he's good enough and there's an opportunity. I think that takes the pressure off a lot of certainly the NCAA a lot of programs for sure. I, I completely agree. Raff you, you excited about the coming season helicopter advertising here on the beach. So like -centration with a chip, they. Yeah, I, you know, it's funny. We always talk about the blue bloods and I just think was great about the NCAA tournament is that we have seen, they don't necessarily. They're not handed championship either because you if so many programs were guys are three and four year guys, sometimes five that have played together the little more mature there little more resilient. There's just have a, maybe a new compensation plane together. We're tough mindedness, but the excitement every year is become something special, obviously, but the level of talent at a young age, what's just it's just totally credible. I can remember using years ago where he's only sophomore, junior or senior, you know, vis if kids come in, they are ready. They are talented and I and I think part of it is attributable to that. Hey, you circuit where they've competed. They've developed the confidence is not reading about somebody's competing against them and they, they feel there is good if not better. So this is I, I don't think this condemnation totally of the summer league of the is is warranted, and I think just keep moving in that direction where adds some things, the lead them that didn't work. Let's see, we can do better. And I think we'll see a consortium at some point of of all the group free. We've alluded to join this podcast that you gotta sit down and make it better and make it as good as you can make it and just eliminate those that want to play by their own rules. Basically. No, I think you're, I think you're dead on and hopefully, you know, the incidental, a looks back in tweaks this and adjust this. And obviously what they did was well intentioned and hopefully they look back in and just are constructive with this in in. In really make the initiative to to try to get this better in the best way for every kid possible and not just the top ten kids that are that it seems to be focused on. So I appreciate your time in. I'm looking forward to seeing in the season. Chatted with you..

"So you know, I understand that the difficulty of having that in every sport and what what it's like because each especially sport is is a little bit different. But you know, I definitely think it's a big. News and as always of the NCAA little bit a little bit funny news. Yeah. I mean, there's some, you know there's something behind it, right? Like there's no way they're just benefiting the student athlete, but at the same time, if you're a basketball player right now in a Suming that it just stays with basketball unless it moves down to football as well. Like wouldn't you just declare almost every single year when what? What do you have to lose at that point? Yeah, and that's where when I read their at Casey, you do roll your eyes a little bit because there's all these Tatyana that you've got to be approved by USA basketball. You've got to be quote, unquote elite deemed by who, and you know, to be able to have an agent or able to declare, and you know, my question would be why can't everybody makes the decision to enter the draft indoor go back to school? I mean, I, it's a win win situation. If a guy goes undrafted in football. So letting go back and play college football and the team NC double a. wins too because they're getting one of their best players back. I mean, it's just 'cause it makes it just makes me money. I mean, that's that's the thing is like, you know, I was so pissed off when I woke up this morning about the North Carolina shoes, even though it's a rule like, listen, if these guys are giving gifts and they want to sell them, that's capitalism. That's the whole thing. And I know it's ridiculous to say that, but it's like everything makes too much sense. Like if you wanna sell your autograph fine. It's your likeness. And I know again, we've talked about this on this podcast, the NCW full hypocrites in John. Johny you in a witness that up close and personal at am they just don't do anything, right. So even when they do appear to be doing something right, you know, benefits them more. They're hard. But I mean at the end of the day, they have all the power, you know these guys, that North Carolina don't get a chance to play some of them for four games. It's wild for doing something that you know, obviously being in a situation like that, you know, you're selling your shoes, you're doing things like that chances you get away with that or very slim, just just the way that the shoes were how how it was, but the day, you know, these kids are obviously, you know, it's a struggle for money, whatever your college you know for for a lot of these guys to. So to get any opportunity, you have some no money in your pocket and be a little bit more comfortable. A lot of these guys will jump at the opportunity to do that, but north end of the day, it's unfortunate. You know, some guys are out four games some guys out to and I saw somewhere. There's like a total like twelve to fourteen guys, which is which is nuts. It's insane. Well, and the the whole argue. With that. And I mean, argued probably get this a lot when you talk to guys that are coming out of college, it's like people wanted to Claire for the draft for different reasons where if you come from a family with money or you don't like their bunch of different reasons why you would wanna go play professional sports. But to me, it's like, okay, if they're in college and they don't have a lot of money and people really care about them in that moment and they want their autograph or they will take a championship ring and give them free merchandise or whatever it may be, why not let them do it? What does that hurt the NC double a. because it's their own likeness is and they could only be relevant for those four years at their in college. We'll tell you what the bigger money that the NCW's after that they captured the TV bunny shoe money. I think one of the things I laughed at was, you know, they're allowed to have agents now while they're in college or high school to help them..

"And then in April, two thousand ten trust replies to the Email the same day and says, thanks, I will get on ace app JT meeting Jim tressel. Okay. So then the emails continue and they're like, look, this is really bad like you've gotta talk to your guys and figure this out and trust applies. I hear you, it's unbelievable. Thanks for your help. Keep me posted is what I need to do. If anything, I will keep pounding these kids hoping they grow up. That's April two thousand ten. So then in June, it continues this trestle. In this one, local former Buckeye local attorney talking about what's going on. And honestly, I was going back to this time line today preparing for this podcast, like I kept going man, trestle lost his job over this and eventually he loses his job because he lied to the NCAA, but is my wrong for thinking that head coach. In that kind of program that y- hey, man, what's your players doing this really stupid thing like most every coach, and I think most of us, like if you were told immediately and I'm not talking about domestic violence here I'm talking about simply, hey, your players doing something really stupid, hanging out the sketchy tattoo parlor and they're selling jerseys and stuff like would you immediately call the NCAA you probably wouldn't now, maybe it would in the aftermath of what happened with trestle. So this goes on for months. Okay. And then trussell makes a couple mistakes here, but I can understand why he made this one at the end of two thousand ten. He just signed an annual NCA certificate of compliance form indicating he knows of no violations as reported the school. Any knowledge possible violations I would imagine given the the lack of depth that this story at this point that most coaches would you sign off on that certificate if you even signed the thing. Okay. Then the US attorney's office notifies Ohio State officials that it's been discovered similar state memorabilia during a raid of this tattoo parlors home and as the items were stolen day later, the. Athletic department is informed the list of dozens of items released later, estimates value, twelve to fifteen thousand dollars. So that is we're took. We're looking at seven, seven months later. Okay, stay interviews, six players. It's prior. It's the running back Herron posing the receiver. Mike Adams, the offensive lineman defensive lineman, Salomon Thomas defensive back Jordan whiting and gene Smith the at the time. Thanks the players and says, look, you know, thanks for letting us to you compliments on being honest and forthright. So then I'll state turns into self report in the NCAA declares six players ineligible, which also was comical because the NCAA notified of the Ohio State program of the five game suspensions for the five players for selling all of this stuff that again was found after a US attorney raid on this tattoo parlors place. Okay. And then they said they have to pay the charity, the equivalent of the money and services they receive. So whatever they got paid for all that gear that have been give that to charity. But and if you remember this comical thing that the two thousand eleven Sugar Bowl against Arkansas, all the players were allowed to play in that game despite having five game suspensions. And I think the tagline on that was for the integrity of the bowl season or for the bull system, and everybody was going to be kidding me with this stuff. And it also reminds me and I know what's going to happen as soon as I say, this much Auburn fans are gonna. Tell me how wrong I am. No, you're wrong. Cam Newton was suspended. No one knew about it and then was reinstated for the SEC title game when they smash South Carolina. And I remember being that's when I first started thinking sports like, oh, wait a minute. I was maybe naive before maybe skeptical, and that's when I started becoming even more skeptical. I'm like, wait a minute. The NCAA just announced that they reinstated somebody that they never announced was suspended with the Cam Newton, his father and that whole investigation. Like that's weird like, oh, guess what? The CBS SEC title game this weekend..
