College Basketball: Schedule, Latest COVID-19 News for the 2020-21 Season

"The NC Double A. has voted to keep recruiting visits dead in bands until January first. So you cannot visit players till basically next year. No scrimmages or expeditions at all this season so you know how? Basically. You have those I guess scrimmage Games whether teams or those tournaments exposition expedition tournament basically. They won't be a part of the season. Regular season capacity has been reduced by four games so Now season will not be as long as the season was already like thirty two games. I believe it depends on the conference in the team, but it wasn't as long. And teams can start practicing as much as twelve hours per week starting September twenty first? So those are the things that come along with this restart. Obviously, the season was initially scheduled to begin November tenth, but obviously, it was pushed back and said, they wanted to make share. where it was where we were. Overall. So obviously you can tell the instability is definitely trying to. Get sports rebounded backup and going, and you know obviously. That's really been big that they're able to get the basketball season on a certain due date. Obviously. Now, the big question would be scheduling which I feel like some coaches and some schools are trying to do right now trying to figure out how we WANNA prayer schedule how do we want to make our schedule? If the season does move forward as scheduled. Now, there's on November twenty fifth. There are eight early season tournaments scheduled to take place in Orlando Florida and it will provide teams like with a bubble like atmosphere like the NBA Wmba Nhl has successful used to play. Amid pandemic. Around thirty games per year. Is What they're GONNA pay for regular season but obviously depends on each state, each college guidelines everything like that. So I think that's that's big. Obviously? You know if you remember Mike conceptually said as he stressed the importance of the big dance on appearance of ESPN NYQUIL when he said. We we're the thing that the incident blaze much concerned about because men's college basketball. In the term, it pays for for something like it produces ninety eight percent or more of the money for the NC Double A.. We need to have the tournament. We can't have it where it's two years in a row and you don't have the NCW. Obviously sketchy can chefs he and his fellow AC coaches proposed an exclusive edition of March madness allowing all eligible one programs to participate in the event. But obviously, the NCAA senior vice president of basketball said that idea was not under consideration. But basically, as you know now we now have. A. Start Date. You know when the scenes coming back. And it's very excited for people who Miss College basketball. Because Obviously College basketball I'm sure we'll be loved this year. Just as much just because we're having games. I'm assuming with the arenas they might not have fans I'm assuming. So I'll know if we're going to have any fans this year those games but briefly, but I'm but I think they were GonNa try to have fans at March madness because of just again how much. Money That it brings in. So. Obviously, that's going to be the big deal they're.

Big Ten Football Will Begin in 2020, Reversing Earlier Decision

"The big ten season starting officially October. Twenty. That mass. Guessing a little bit of a small base Ga- I mean, the big thing is the daily testing. What will it mean for plays you've declared early and you have an agent though because some some players who realized that you know if you're at Ohio state and you're not gonNA play, you might get your agent get ready for the draft, and now in theory if you've ever signed with an agent, you can never play college football again right so hopefully, something can be worked out because this is an exceptional. That, surely, well, currently there isn't, but obviously, we're in uncharted territory. We've never had never to deal with this situation before. So the NC Double A.'s can have to think on its feet. The big ten will felt pressure from parents, players and other leagues but make no mistake they wanted to play football they. Awesome. There's been talk as if the OH, they don't. They don't care they. You know they don't take football seriously anyone think likes if Michigan Penn State doesn't care about playing football. It's worth so much money to all of. Them it's great that coming back. We'll see if the PAC twelve can do. It's I I remember speaking to a couple of months ago and you asked me how confident I was the NFL season stall on time as normal and whether college football would and I was a hundred percent positive the NFL week one would start as normal. Absolutely note faith that college football would be able to see college football is still in a state of flux. It's a much more complicated situation than the NFL you can just keep these thirty teams. Following the same sort of. Glad to see the big ten back. But it's going to be hard for any of those teams to make the national championship because don't get to play as many games as the other conferences.

Philippines deports US Marine in transgender killing

"His anger in the Philippines after President Duterte a pardon the US Marine who had bean serving time in prison for killing a transgender woman in 2014 Joseph Scott Pemberton has been released on deported just over halfway through his 10 year prison sentence for the killing of Jennifer Lord. I've been hearing about the crime and the impact of the pardon from Nomi, Fontana's Thie, executive director of Gender and Development advocates, Filipinas and LGBTQ rights organization in the country. On the night of October. 11 2013, which was a Saturday transform and Jennifer Louder, met the American Joseph Scott Pemberton at a bar. They agreed through check in a motel a little over half an hour later, the US Marine leaves, and when the motel clerk checks in on Jennifer Loudy, he finds her Dead with her had in the toilet and her neck blackened with strangulation marks, and apparently she died from drowning. So because of that, wass as fiction by drowning, and he was convicted and sentenced to 10 years in prison. Yes, A year later, after a trial was held, Scott Pemberton was convicted. Ah, home inside in spite of the charges brought against him being murder, So it's AA degree lower. Murder and he was in jail for a six through 12 years, although the maximum for home so I could be up to 20 years, but he appealed his sentence. So it was shortened to just 10 years. So I'm here. He would have served just a little over five years and now he's being pardoned. Released. Sent back to the United States. What is your reaction to that? This is something that we do not accept. This is something that we will mouth primitive and something that we will never, ever forget, because the legacy of Jennifer loudest keys is that it is the first case in the Philippines at the successfully put an American serviceman was committed a crime in Philippine soil in jail. Convicted and jailed in the Philippians. So this means for almost a century that the Philippines has been a colony and in a new colony of the United States since Spain, which first colonizers handed our country over to them in 80 98. So many American soldiers have committed crimes in our country and have never been convicted, have never been put in jail. And what what is the significance of this for the trans community? For the trans community. This sounds are loud and clear message that the president is an enemy of the LGBT of the trans community and the LGBT Q our community in the Philippines and that in spite of his pronouncement that the president has been vocal about supporting LGBT Q. I writes in the Philippines, but this action proves didn't understand what LGBT Q I rights are and this interrogates his claims that he is a friend of the community. Yes, because his record is pretty Good, isn't it? When he was vice mayor of Davao City, he encouraged a council to pass anti discrimination ordinance that protected the LGBT community. He said that he was against bullying gay people. He has Made other comments in support of the the LGBT community. But you say his actions speak of something different. Yes, and those actions in the past or his record as a chief of Ah, off our city here in the Philippines? Is this a ruse? For me? It's It's really a Machiavellian. It's a very cunning politician, so he does things that will make him Popular to the people. But isn't it possible this? This is about broader diplomatic relationship with the United States, one that he has said different things about but ultimately he's decided that pardoning this American soldier was the right thing for the Philippines. We don't know for sure. And at this point everything will these speculative because as things stand it, for example, that the Democrats win and the NC Trump, who is friends with their and Where does that leave him in with Americans, But at the same time, we also feel that for the many human rights abuses that have been committed under his term, the president now has to find allies in the community of nations so that after he steps down, he will have those powerful friends to rely on for support because Certainly he will be held accountable for all the human rights abuses that happened under his term. Naomi Fontana's executive director of gender and development advocates, Filipinas and LGBTQ Rights Association in that country.

John Thompson took a chance on hapless Georgetown ... then worked a miracle

"Jay Bilas here because there's big college basketball breaking news this morning the death of John Thompson Junior age of seventy eight, one, thousand, nine, hundred, four NCAA championship winner the first African. American. Coach to take team to the men's College Basketball Championship his best player is now Georgetown's coach his son John. Thompson the third eventually followed him as head coach as well with Craig there in the middle giant for what he did for Eric African Americans in a giant with what he did in the game. Jay joins us on the Shell Pennzoil performance line this morning Jay good morning for those that may be too young or don't understand the scope of what John Thompson Junior meant to college basketball. How would you sum it up? He was a giant in in basketball both literally and figuratively, and he did so much for the game not only on the x No side that you did a substantial amount there. You know his Georgetown Teams especially when you got nineteen, eighty, seventy, nine, eighty through the early nineties they were a force and the best defensive coaches in the history of the game, his teams were very disciplined. Very smart and very together and that that's why they were so great defensively, it wasn't just that they were athletic. they were smart and disciplined. And almost went to the final four in nineteen eighty when John lost a a one point game to Iowa and that was lute Olson's first final four and lute Olson passed away a little earlier last week But John, Thompson. was that he was also fought for social justice before it was it was cool if you will. Think. You'll remember back in the eighties there was legislation by the NC double called proposition forty two. That put in a entrance requirements and they were disproportionately affecting African Americans and John Thompson and a game I. Believe it was Boston College got up before the tip and walked off the floor and protest with a towel over his shoulder and and you know he took a stand and took a stand on on multiple issues He was not always popular because the things that he was saying that time was really uncomfortable for for people to hear. And you can imagine I mean are people are uncomfortable. Now think how it was back in the in the late Seventies. Early Eighties one John Thompson was was setting a standard and with standing up on social issues. He he was a, he was a a great great person a man of of really high character and You know you don't want it to get lost what a great coach was but he was also a great man.

"Tell me a little bit about what you're doing at NC tra-. So the premise for what we're doing. Really. Emerges from what I said a moment ago, which is this last decade has been transformative in parallel onto feels very rarely talk to each other. We've already talked about the advancement on the machine learning side than the ability to build incredibly high accuracy predictive models. In, a slew of different problem domains If you have enough quality data on the other side, the biologists and engineers have developed a set of tools over the last decade or so that each of which have been transformative in their own rights. But together they create I think a perfect storm of large data creation enabling large data creation on the biology side, which when you feed it into the machine learning piece, can all of a sudden give rise to a unique insights and so some of those tools are actually pretty special and incredible. Honestly. So one of those. Is What we call in DC pluripotency cells, which is we being the community not we didn't see Tro, which is the ability to take skin cells or blood cells from any one of us, and then by some almost magic revert them to the state that they're in when you're an embryo in which they can turn into any lineage of your body. So you can take a skin cell from US reverted to stem cell status, and then make a Daphne Neuron and that's amazing because that definitely Neuron Carey's might genetics and if there are diseases that manifest in neuronal. In rural tissue, you will be able to potentially examine those cells and say, Oh, wait this is what makes a healthy neuron different from one that carries a larger genetic burden of disease, and so that's one tool that has arisen a different one that is also remarkable is the whole crisper revolution in the ability to modify the genetics of those cells that you could actually create fake disease not disease because it's real. Disease but introduce it into a cell to see what a really high penetrate mutation looks like in a cell and then commensurate with that there's been the to measure cells in many many many different ways where you can collect hundreds of thousands of measurements from each of those cells. C can really get a broad perspective on what those cells look like rather than coming in with I know I need to measure this one thing. And you can do this all at an incredible scale. So on the one side, you have all the capability for data production and on the other side, you have all this capability for data interpretation. And I think those two. Threads are converging into a field that I'm calling digital biology where we suddenly have. The ability to measure biology quantitatively at an unprecedented scale, interpret what we see, and then take that back and right biology whether it's using crisper some other intervention to make the biological system do something other than what it would normally have done so that to me is a field that's emerging and will have repercussions that span from. Environmental, science biofuel bacteria or algae. The do all sorts of funky things like carbon dioxide out of the environment. Better crops. But also importantly for what we do better human health and so I think were part of this wave, the starting to emerge and what we do is take this. Convergence and pointed in the direction of making better drugs that can potentially actually be disease modifying rather than. As many other many existing drugs just often just make people feel better but don't really change the course of their disease

Despite Widespread Pain, Economy Remains Strong Selling Point For Trump

"The president's approval rating remains low. He gets higher marks on the economy than other issues. That's true. Even now with almost thirty million people collecting unemployment benefits as Republicans focus on opportunity at they're convention the economy remains. One of the president's strongest selling points. NPR's Scott horsely reports. It takes a certain amount of Hooda campaign on your economic record when the unemployment rate is in double digits but that's exactly what president trump's been doing. You see the kind of numbers that were putting up there unbelievable best job numbers ever three months more jobs in the last three months before in boasting about the big job gains in May June and July trump conveniently omits the historic job losses. In March and April so far the US has recovered less than half the jobs that disappeared this spring this morning new numbers showing the worst unemployment rate since the Great Depression a staggering number and the worst since the Great Depression worse than anything we have seen since the Great Depression ordinarily a recession like this would be crippling for a president seeking reelection look at what happened to George H W Bush back in Nineteen ninety-two despite his popularity after winning the first Gulf, War Bush's economic approval rating plummeted to just eighteen percent during what was in hindsight a relatively mild recession unemployment that year peaked at seven point eight percent but that was enough to send the president packing. That famous line from Bill, Clinton's adviser James Carville doesn't seem to apply to trump the president's economic approval rating has slipped since the beginning of the year, but it still hovering near fifty percent. So what's going on what's going on is the memory of the economy before the pandemic Republican pollster with air says, many Americans are still judging trump on the economy as it was six months ago before the coronavirus took hold here, it was rolling unemployment was at historic lows. The economy was in great shape before the pandemic killed it presidential approval ratings in general don't swing up or down as much as they used to as Americans have become more locked into rigid partisan attitudes. But Gallup's Lydia Saad also suspects many people are giving trump a pass. When it comes to the economic downturn, they're more concerned about the pandemic NC the economy is just a temporary symptom. SORTA like a hurricane something that's happened is come in it's created all kinds of havoc. But it's going to go away to get back to normal. That's how Mark Schneider sees it. He retired from the Navy after twenty years on nuclear submarines, and now runs an advocacy group for nuclear power. Last week, the S. and P. Five, hundred stock index was heading for a record high Schneider tweeted that the trump economy is unstoppable. The recession he says will soon pass but just steals temporary. Pause Kinda, paused economy as opposed to something mucking the system as he drives around his home of Chesapeake in South Eastern Virginia Schneider is confident that a lot of people feel the same way I? have yet to see a single biden sign in my entire city. I haven't seen a bumper sticker seen anything by him, but there's trump flag flying everywhere. My forecast is, is that trump's gonNA take a single landslide airs the GOP pollster is not so certain despite trump's solid grade on the economy air says, it may not be enough to save the president come November, the corona virus has driven out. Everything else trump's overall approval rating is considerably lower than his economic marks weighed down in part by his handling of the pandemic until there's a solution for the corona virus air says, it's going to be difficult for the economy to come roaring back.

The DNC and RNC are going virtual. What can we expect?

"So actually the coronavirus pandemic everything has gone virtual. We covered all digital conferences like Tho- launches, apples, WDC. In DNC are completely different animals Taco bell expecting to see well I. Think it's GonNa be a very, highly produced. Event just like it normally is but it's GonNa be really different because you know when they. When they usually do this, you've got like thousands of people in a huge arena you know you have people talking. And they're they're mostly talking to the to the people, the viewers and the audience. Sitting at home on their couches. Anyway. But you have that vibe you have that you know the people cheering it's it's like being in a live sporting event in a sense you know so like that's going to be lost a bit. Yeah. We've we've had instances with like the the NBA right they put up digital boards with with people that are virtually in I've watched the most games. It's definitely not. It doesn't really replicate the feeling of being at a game where the ambiance there I imagine a lot of the energy that would have been in those conferences have people been there. Is really kind of sucked away, right? Yeah and you know and that's really political conventions are basically like cheerleading events right? You know it's like the party faithful as there you've got these delegates from all around the country they're like really Gung Ho for their party and their candidate and they wanna like. You know just cheer their heads off and it's you know. So you know I think that energy is going to be a bit different but I'm also curious to see like what creative things they come up with right like like you mentioned the NBA thing like like are they going to do something like that? You know I mean? It'll be interesting to see how they approach it. Yeah. Have you got any kind of indication on on what they might do to create that excitement that is would be missing from having all those folks there. Yeah. So the the DNC they they have been, they've definitely said that they are going to try to involve people like regular everyday people. So I'm wondering if it is going to be something NBA like right where they have screens. Right there. But we'll definitely be having some like. Some people getting beamed in from all across the US whether it's you know. Politicians or or just SORTA your regular everyday folks who are like either live on video and a lot of like these pre produced videos people have been they've had this campaign where people are able to. Send in their videos like with prompts like I know Joe and talk about like why they're excited about Joe Biden and that kind of thing. So they're going to have that SORTA interspersed throughout the program. So it'll be interesting to see like how it all Kinda comes together. To DNC specifically, what what is that? GonNa look like will anyone actually be in Milwaukee? So there will probably be like a skeleton kind of crew in Milwaukee like I've heard that that Tom Perez, who's the chairman of the DNC was still planning to go to Milwaukee to gavel in the convention officially. But the big speakers you know like Joe Biden, who's the presumptive nominee he is not going to be there he's going to be somewhere in Delaware. Now, they've said he's not probably going to do it from his basement. So some place else in Delaware. In the Wilmington area where he lives. So that'll be interesting. I wonder how they they might dress up whatever venue he's in. You know like he was speaking with. Kamala Harris. You know the other day they've had actually a couple of speaking engagements and they've got the flags everywhere but like the backdrop didn't really look all that interesting to me. So it'll it'll I wonder how they're going to you know jazz it up so that it looks cool. How's the Brokaw can work? Yeah. So the roll call and by the way like I got to go to the convention in two, Thousand Sixteen, the roll call is pretty cool. Just in general when you're there in the room, there's like this vibe all the people stand up and they say, you know I'm from South Carolina and they were the whatever state and we pledge our ex delegates to. And so it's like an exciting moment. So it's going to be totally different this time 'cause they're all not going to be in the room but I you know they've said they're. GonNa. Kind of pop around all all the states and so you're probably going to have people from those states. Doing their call and I'm sure they're gonNA do something jazzy about like. You know I'm from Delaware. So it's like Delaware the first state in the nation. Allah. Probably say something like that I don't know. So it'll. We'll see. We'll see what about the NC I know there was a lot of back and forth about where was gonna be in whether it was go digital What is that GonNa was so that you know I think that's still to be determined right? Like they're still they haven't put out a whole lot of information about like what it's GonNa look like exactly. So I mean I want I wonder if some of this might change in the next week but. So far they are. Going to have a very reduced crowd in Charlotte. President trump will not be there to accept the nomination. In they're gonNa have like something like you know three hundred or so delegates there. So you know I don't know I don't know if they're going to try to do some things kind of like in in the arena although I think that would look pretty. bleak. If it's people, you know space really far apart. So I think that's still Kinda to be determined with what they're going to be doing it wear for folks who are watching these where can you check out the streams? So the DNC they've announced a whole bunch of places like you're gonna be able to stream, it live on youtube and facebook and twitter and And then the convention is officially you know airing from nine to eleven every night and all the broadcast channels will have it for the last hour. And and then they're gonNA have it on like TV and Roku and so they were going to be a lot of opportunities for people to stream it or. Even, to SORTA catch it on the networks got looking at some of the other challenges I mean we talked a little bit about the lack of energy. But what are the potential pitfalls who going virtual? Yeah. Well I mean we've all been watching. You know some of these cable news shows lately right like in sometimes you get like the guests who are like pixellated or their screen freezes. You know so I think that's going to be a challenge. You know you don't want somebody to be mid-sentence and all of a sudden they're face completely frees up. So that'll be a challenge. Yasser. Don't want it to look like a really boring call. With. With everybody with the bookcase in the background. So I think they'll have to figure out ways to to make it look interesting and you know. And not have any sort of technical glitches.

What are coaches and players willing to sacrifice for a college football season?

"We started the show with how much money can affect your decisions in the pandemic. So what if you're a college athlete who scholarship depends on your ability to play a sport? There wasn't really. Anything. That gave me assure you though camps increasingly we've seen college athletes speak up for themselves. Yesterday a group representing a thousand big ten football players wrote a letter blasting the NC double a. for not having a nationwide plan for keeping athletes safe through demanding testing from third party mandatory quarantines for someone even presumed positive and penalties for anyone who violates protocols or fails to report violations well Unfortunately, we're back together today to discuss what I would deem a significant increase in positive test, and there have been reports of players behaving on safely at review. Of the contact tracing the primary source, the spread appears to be an off campus party. But when you read between the lines of this letter, they're really suggesting even if there are rules in place, we don't trust the people in charge to follow them think about how much money college sports bring in even if there's no one in the stands, TV. Packages bring millions for a big university. If one positive test means you gotta quarantine the entire offense of line would you maybe think about just telling that student to stay in their dorm and keep quiet? There was a story coming out of Colorado yesterday that is on what some football players it Colorado State University are saying some athletic staff to the school president has now launched an investigation into accusations that coaches are telling positive players not to report. and. are threatening your playing time. If you preemptively quarantine, there were reports that they're contact tracing with being was being finagled. that. They were not social distancing Salem understating thaddeus says, nothing comes ahead of athlete safety but just for peace of mind the NC Double A. is now saying, no athlete will lose athletic scholarship this year even if they choose to sit out the season.

Fighting COVID-19 vaccine fears

"First. Up this week, we have sciences editor in chief Holden Thorp. He wrote an editorial on Corona virus vaccines this week high holden closer great to be with you. So your editorial starts with the positive. What's the good news? Well, the good news is that in just a short period of time since we got the sequence of the novel Corona Virus, the International Scientific Enterprise has done an extraordinary job at describing the virus. It's genetics, the structures of all of its component parts elucidating what happens. To our immune systems when we get infected with the virus at describing neutralizing antibodies that can be used therapeutics and as developing vaccines that can be used to and so I really hard for me to remember a time where in such a short time science has done this much on a particular problem on. So many fronts all across the world scientists in working together. But as you rightfully point out in your piece so much of this effort, this excellence has been overshadowed by social and political issues. Can you talk a little bit about the ones that you call out in your piece the I think that the fact that the people of the United States in particular but it is also true around the world can't come to a consensus about the fact that we should be using public health measures like masks and distancing to suppress the virus. While we wait for science to come up with these solutions I think has become such a powerful issue in the media that it's over shadowing the progress. That sciences making and so at a time that should be really a triumph for science and all we have achieved, and of course, there have been some twists and turns along the way. But at a point that really should be a time when science is being celebrated it's completely overshadowed by the partisan political, debating about who's responsible for the virus and what the best steps are too mitigated between now, and when we get the vaccine rolled out scientists public large, they're seeing vaccines as the solution and. Not Been Smooth sailing on the vaccine front but there is progress. What's the status right now of vaccine development just a general overview. There are a lot that are m phase three clinical trials. Face. One of the most high profile ones is the Madonna Mr Rene Vaccine, but there are other vaccines around the world that of already made it to phase three, and so the chance that one of these would read out in December or early January I think is quite high as probably sixty day trial and you can't get everybody enrolled all at once but we're getting to the point where we're gonNA start seeing some phase three date on these and if the phase one and two any indication than when folks are vaccinated, they're going to generate a robot. Immune response and eventually will be able to show that that provides protection against the illness and would take a really something unforeseen if that wasn't the case so far. So good is what a lot of people would say about where we are in the back and we're really further ahead I think a lot of people expect about this time. There are some concerns. Now, for example, the US had this project called option warp speed, which I guess gave the nod to a bunch of companies to go ahead gave some money but that wasn't exactly a transparent approach to picking. Vaccine, candidates yeah I think first of all, the name of Operation Warp speed has been pretty unfortunate. Warp speed is something from science fiction. It's not something that exists in this. Up It's only got fictional antecedents. On top of that, sending a signal that we're going this fast may some people to doubt whether the vaccine is going to be safe enough, and then within operation warp speed I feel for him on this because they are trying to partner with the companies that are going to push the vaccines the furthest the fastest. But there's been a lot of chatter about whether it's been transparent and whether it's been equitable, the way that they have selected the different vaccines and so that's Just inevitable I mean you have to work with industry on this the government doesn't have the ability to produce hundreds of millions of vaccine doses and The industry partnership was always going to be there but we know once you have that then naturally that causes some people wonder whether things will be done in a in a fair way Now, I see some parallels between the fight against masks, people wearing masks, her social distancing and vaccine hesitancy or fear or refusal of vaccines. And this is going back to before the current crisis in two thousand and nineteen the WHO declared vaccine hesitancy one of the biggest issues worldwide this is a problem that was around before the coronavirus pandemic, and now we're seeing mass hesitancy. Are you concerned that there are going to be vaccine has NC issues as a coronavirus vaccines come online. Yes, I'm very concerned about that and I think a lot of other leaders across the American federal government in particular have voiced concerns about this. We've been dealing with the ANTIBAC- Movement for quite a while. Now, it's based on impart on an unfortunate apor that was retracted suggesting that there were dangers causing autism from vaccines that turned out to be wrong. But one of the things that happens in these kinds of political struggles is that the side that's using this information kinda doesn't care whether it was a reprint peer reviewed article or was an article that was retracted. If it helps their agenda, they'll push on. That and so we've seen a lot of anti vaccine movement before this. That's a being stoked with the idea that somehow sciences conspiracy to deprive people love their freedom or to enrich science in some way none of that is founded but that's the kind of thing that you see circulating those very same forces have been undermining the public health experts on masking and social distancing and estimates of the severity of the virus, and now they're perfectly positioned to undermine the vaccine, and that is a scary thing because we need to get enough people vaccinated that there's enough immunity out there in the population to stop the epidemic.

Okay Good Missoula city of they call it the Garden City. And I'm like that's that's just New Jersey but is it New Jersey. They call it the garden. I know I've been there on all of the turnpike signs that it's the garden state and then you look and you're like that looks like a refinery but okay garden than I'm used to but we're not here to criticize New Jersey. Yeah alienate any people here. Who ARE FROM NEW JERSEY. Half Your Guys. You've got everywhere. Wow all right. What's answer some questions from our listeners? Or in this case our viewers and listeners. Because all these questions came from you and the way that we're going to identify you as your ambulance song. Some people may be new to the PODCAST and they don't know what that's a reference to. I had a million dollar idea or maybe someone else added an ice stolen. It's hard for me to remember. Sometimes and the million dollar idea was that instead of having that annoying like really piercing siren when you're in an ambulance which is a terrible thing to hear when you're sick or or in crisis you should have an ambulance song that you prefrontal and then if you ever find yourself in an ambulance they play your song. The whole way. There they loud is really loud and so people know to get out of the way but also you get to listen to a song. That's better than than the actual ambulance siren. There are some problems with this million dollar idea. We don't need to get into all of them. Want to people have pointed out to me but it's a fun thing to dream about it is. This would be part of my if I ever wrote a dystopia novel. Believe you me. Everybody would have an ambulance and it would cost so much like everything in the healthcare system. John Let's answer this question for Abby and Ryan whose ambulance song is shake it off by Taylor Swift. GotTa have some good vibes going. In that situation they write. Hello this is abby and Ryan. Art Question is have either of you ever come across an odd topic or strange fact while doing research for one of your books and if yes what did you discover and was it ever added to the book I so I had seen in my book that takes place several scenes that take place inside of an airplane where there's no one in it and the and things have to happen in the airplane so I called a man and his twitter was like airplane Guy. I basically hank finds his experts. See I tweeted. I was like I need someone who's like an airplane guy and then some of the airplane. Guy Responded. Hey Hey yeah no totally. An airplane guy. Like airplane thing happens. He's on the Cable News. Call him up and he. He's like a professional airplane guy and so I got on the phone with them. He was super gregarious and like open to helping me out. However I wanted and I was like I need to know how you might get into a plane not through the door and he was like let me tell you a story and I was like Yay Nita Story. So he wants wants an airplane. The door got stuck and I don't think there was anybody on the plane at the time. Yeah and so. You need to come out needed to get into the airplane. But the door won't open and so he told me how you get into an. Which is you crawl in through the nose landing gear and you crawl up there. And then there's like a thing where you unscrew all the bolts and then you can get into the airplane. If you're ever walking around like a seven thirty seven you can see the bolts in the floor in the front galley that he can crawl down into the landing gear from. I can't remember the words landing here right now. I also frequently do this where I learned something and then put it into a book in fact my novel. An abundance of Catherine's is essentially just a series of things that I learned stitch together into into novel form but But but recently. With my guys. The antecedent reviewed. Sometimes I'll discover a fact that I like so much that I'll be like I think I've got twelve hundred words so that I can justify telling people that the most recent example of which is that. I reviewed Pineapple on pizza for the interviewed because I discovered that in the nineteen sixties. Pineapple on pizza was invented in Canada by Greek immigrant. Who was working at a Chinese restaurant and who is inspired by Chinese cuisine to put a South American food on a traditionally Italian dish which went on to become most popular not in Hawaii but in Australia where astonishingly nationwide. The pineapple is the number one topping on pizza pineapple. I'm not convinced by your applause. It seemed it seemed. It seemed not to be one hundred percent of the people. Yeah it's a very divisive topic. I was like man given that fact. I've got to find twelve hundred other words to say about up on because I wanted. Tell that to people. It's good man. I want pizza now. Canadian Bacon what is Canadian is a Canadian. Of course it's not. Of course he knows that yes. Bacon has no nationality. Very true belongs to the pig pig bacon. Thank you take that away from them actually. Just leave it on would probably be their preference. All right. I told you is GONNA be a lot of emotional whiplash all right. Hey what's our next question? They come from David who's ambulance. Song is I don't know what that is You know it's like a chant Gregorian chant. Okay I mean. It's it's about her dance song. It's not a bob as an education an education major in his final semester of university. I'm prepared to teach English in high school and I'm slightly afraid of not being the teacher that will inspire my students. What teachers inspired you? The most in your education over the years. And what did they do to help you see their subject as tangible worth engaging with outside of just the requirements not a giant killer nor a sling slingers simply David but David was just simply David until they were like. Hey there's a goliath you need to fight so you never know and you are going into the education system so you will have your share. I first thing I want to say about. This is like you don't have to be that thing for every student. That is not how it works. It's not like we all come out of the education system and we all picked like everybody who had Mrs Grant Thinks Mrs Grant was the one. I think that we all find our teachers back. No matter how inspirational my Algebra teacher was that just wasn't going to be the person for you know for. I actually have a lot of friends. Who would site are Algebra teacher as like the most inspiring most one teacher? He was a great teacher. It's just you happen to be teaching Algebra two to which I am not inclined for me the people who made the biggest difference so when I was in school I often felt like I was being asked to jump over a series of arbitrary hurdles for no reason like they do in hurdle races. You know like whenever I watch hurdle race. I always think to myself if they just removed the hurdles. This would go so much faster. And that's how I felt in school. I was like now. They're gonNA make me jump over the Algebra to her and now I have to jump over the American History Hurdle. Why because the hurdles have been placed here by forces so much larger than me that I cannot begin to imagine them and it also felt like quite arbitrary and it felt like the main thing I was trying to do is to get a piece of paper that said that I had learned enough to be a grown up and the teachers who mattered to me where the teachers who were so passionate about what they were doing. They were so passionate about their work about their subject. Matter that somehow that passion became infectious and I began to see it not as a series of hurdles but instead as an opportunity an opportunity to understand my place in the universe and understand the universe an opportunity to understand how in different periods of history people have communicated themselves the ideas that matter to them the questions that mattered to them and and how to have conversations through space and time with the magic of reading and things like that. That was the stuff that really got me so I think for me. It comes down to passion and finding a way to hold onto that passion. Even when you're around students who if they're anything like me are super difficult and can be kind of annoying. Yeah and I think that like being open to that kind of passion in front of a bunch of maybe somewhat intentionally detached. In order to protect themselves students can be difficult because like they. They are in a world to some extent where they have to protect their identities. Because like it's not easy and high school or Middle School to be a person and so I think a lot of the sort of aloofness that comes with high school was a protection. Oh yeah like breaking through that. It feels definitely feels like if you show the world. You're you're vulnerable bell. It will devour you because I felt that way throughout middle school and then through most of high school by the way if you're in middle school or high school right now and it's and it's great that's I'm so happy for you and if it's not great it's it's okay and I am. Sorry that sucks but I promise it will get better. High school was temporary. You will not always feel the way that you feel in high school. I feel like the biggest achievement in my life and a lot of ways was making it to adulthood. I'm extremely extremely proud of that. In all I ever want to talk about when I see old friends is. Oh my God. Can you believe that we're here? This next question comes from Meredith. Who would like to hear highway to hell by? Acdc while they're on the way to the hospital meredith is working Darinka. John Says Meredith. I'm working at NASA THIS SEMESTER. As an intern awesome. So I'm like zero point zero zero one percent shore that they might be hiding aliens somewhere at the research base. I will be at. I want to be on the lookout. In case we are living in that. Very small percentage chance the universe. Can you help me come up with a game plan? How do I find the potential secret aliens? Where might they be? What if my one of my co workers is one of them in fear of inevitable. Heap Death Meredith. I mean first of all that shouldn't even be in your top thousand worries now. It should. Why disagree yeah know what you gotTa do so the main thing let me get out my pen gotta add you? Don't even have a list. You haven't even finished your top thousand yet. Have you number nine hundred ninety nine spiders crawling in my mouth?.

"And NC double a tournament CD nothing that would be with the game's main the rest of the way yeah exactly I mean they rose to fourteen huge and gentiles rankings and that's advanced analytics obviously a thing that they're probably in the high twenties still much this is a team that that when we've seen or switching their ceiling and compact anybody else around the country and these guys complete with anybody in any your weapons with so much parity I thank god that paternity here as if I was a leveraged letters gets back into game shape and and it's guys continue to play emerges they are front runners another when he won his second straight fresh rather weak under the mall was there yesterday in the cable out for sixteen point you start to get the shots so playing with more confidence in your searching you want her to learn a little bit more to you know in in cash games they were defending the post one way and they were going to stray from that now you're seeing different defense envelopes and they've adjusted and that's when you can really tell the guy can coach the second time around when you're playing a team the second time in and what they've done how they just in the majors Dayton time is on my opinion and how they defended Cassius Winston or they told us a lot about this coaching staff so one way to go but you've got to feel pretty good about their postseason chances are enough your Michigan fan here how to guide how many more wins the thing they need the rest of the way to be a lock on selection Sunday for the NC double a tournament including the big ten tournament I might put that number at three maybe right yeah yeah I'd say about that if you get a more the bad loss at home to Nebraska but none of the other games if you lose that you were to lose five out of six and then you'd be in trouble but none of the other games individually are going to move the needle that much as when it comes to ranking in that ranking or anything else because you're playing good teams on the road you're playing the teams at all and we only got one more game Nebraska against a team that stinks so you got on board the battle lost if they were to win two more I think they would be fine you know but I think it I think three three is still probably most likely looking at that right schedule but it wouldn't surprise me at all to get the form to are they still have to go to Rutgers they have to go to Ohio state I think that's a winnable game especially with a DJ carton then they have to go to mail that's gonna be a really tough one and the year I'm come that one is a loss but other than that it was canceled last at home and took care of business that I think you're just fine as well so the will ring dog on the Michigan insider on the huge radio network joining us on the metro health university of Michigan helping us on how many teams you think from the big ten are going to get in to the turn on yeah it sounds like ten right now the end is in a lot of trouble at this point they've got to win some games and they've got a tough schedule down the stretch so produce got some work to do as well but they play well at homes mission could really put a damper on their chances of being when they're so the only two that don't have any chance right a northwestern and Nebraska unless they win the big ten tournament I can't remember year ever in which I've said that you know we've got fourteen teams man this league is top to bottom as good as I've ever seen it and the is that the at the same time you can learn anything including a look at the plaster they go to Maryland they almost beat the rush out of there with the room with no time lapse with a chance to win the game so you can't put those those games for granted either so should be a fine finish man these last three weeks to be really exciting and always love the big ten tournament especially in Indianapolis man that's a great venue for that tournament because when you go down from Minnesota will six in eighty Indiana in Indianapolis to produce I mean you literally will have a big ten tournament or there might be twelve teams I could win it seriously yeah new tires I completely agree with that body and you know you want to avoid plan on Wednesday obviously and there's still a lot of good teams that's some good teams are gonna be played on Wednesday this year let's be honest in a lot with a lot at stake in the end it's probably going to be one of the so I teams at least a lot of talent show you.

"That university and his president has already gone a record saying we've added mark we are confident he is our coach this this and this just something to keep an eye on i think cal state northridge maybe send out another memo or statement here either you know reemphasizing that or potentially something else but nc state i guess it's easy to focus on that university as much because it didn't go to the turnament it was underwhelming dennis with one and done he's not even at the school anymore but you've got coaches involved here directly and had nc state lived up to its potential invented a sweet sixteen team last season i think potentially maybe that part of the story would be getting a little more noise but this is this is certainly problematic and to me even though potential vacating victories just not just there's not as much to lose for nc state if i'm the aa i'm more concerned with this because the fbi is confident enough to put in this document and accuse coaches at least one if not multiple at nc state of being party to pay for play scheme whereas that's not the case with kansas and if that's still happening in the year essentially twenty seventeen when this would have been going down you know that all the animals are out of the barn at that point and this is really from that standpoint a market standpoint this is kind of your worst nightmare like the idea that coaches can still just kind of flagrantly do this they can get away with it and now this is only getting exposure fbi investigation.
