"Before you test drove it? A bit of a project yet. Imagine if Nolan had a project chat. It would be like a wooden frame. The spruce goose. The biggest heaviest. Mosin movable plane ever. Just this weekend? Yeah. No one would pick that because that plane barely flies. You know the history of it? Rich. One of the biggest plane ever. Built by Howard Hughes. There's only two in existence in the patina. And Canaan would like kick soccer balls. But as NAE co owner Keith zangi described in the fastest woman on earth, the F one O four was the ideal aircraft to customize. The beauty of this aircraft is that it's got a wind chill that's good at Mach 2.8. It has a perfect inlet geometry. The aircraft itself is barely wider in diameter than the engine, so you couldn't design anything smaller. As NAE came close to perfecting the newest version of their 56 foot long 52,000 horsepower beast in the early 2010s. They wanted to raise the company's profile and began to seek out potential drivers. We were looking for a female driver that could bring attention to the project, said, and a crew chief Les home after meeting Jesse in person, Ed shadel agreed that they had to get her on board. Ed knew that Jesse was more than qualified to drive any normal vehicle on the planet, but the NAE was a different story. It's a jet. It's a jet without wings. On the ground. So he wanted to make sure that Jesse had the physical endurance to handle such intense speeds. So she was required to take a few endurance tests before getting into the actual car. They took her to magic mountain and put her on X two. First, they sent Jesse up with a stunt pilot in an open cockpit biplane to see if she would get sick. She didn't. Step one, down. Good. In fact, she was grinning ear to ear when the plane landed. The opposite of getting sick. Opposite of sick. I would love to go in one of them. It'd be sick. We were supposed to fly in the thunderbirds like a year ago, or I was supposed to. And I had to go get a physical. And I don't think I think I'm too tall, really. They had to measure my hip to the length of my squad. Pretty much. Well, I fit in the plane, but if I have to eject, it ripped my old legs off. Oh man. Oh. So they're like, wow. Better that you don't do it. And I was like, yeah, okay, whatever. You could tuck your arms and legs in to your body. Especially when you're sleeping at night. Oh, like a turtle? Yeah. I never thought that. Sometimes your arms get in the way. When you're cuddling and stuff, don't you wish you could just go into your body? How are you going to cuddle? I guess you can cuddle with no arms. But I've never thought that. Yeah, I have to agree with James. That's never crossed my mind where I've been like, man, I wish I could just push my arm inside myself right now. I have no judgment. Yeah, I think creative thought process, but I never thought it. You guys don't have as big of arms as me though. I've got a huge they get in the way. I can see why your arms would get annoying because they are so masculine. Yeah. Super vascular. I've knocked over glasses on the counter just with my veins. Yeah. You say about me? Sorry, I'm just a little angry from all these steroids. You sound like it. "A favorite actually cow bread running tomorrow at San Anita that has a big chance in the Santa Monica against open company. But for the most part, bob doesn't run a whole lot of Cal reds, and he does not have any of the maidens in this race. So you've got to beat a two to 5 shot invasion, pass it in this spot, second choice on the morning line is the first time starter for trainer Mike piping named Nate diamond daughter of Stanford. Who's written by top jock Juan Hernandez. Interestingly they don't want Hernandez winning what about 30% clip this meat at Santa Anita flavian Pratt, who I think most people would think is clearly the top rider out there is not having the greatest of meats yet at San Anita. 87 starters for flavian Pratt this meat. So that's from December 26th on. Just 6 wins 23 second place finishes and 7 thirds and the negative about that in addition to the fact that he's only winning at a 7% clip and he's probably used to winning four times that amount out in the Southern California is that he rides a lot of short price horses. So if you're betting on flabby and Pratt horses so far out in Southern California at this San Anita meet, you're losing a whole lot of money and probably not very happy. And you're going to have to take a short price if you want it again. I'm not going to talk too many people into two to 5 shots and certainly not two to 5 shots that are made in state bred Phillies where there are several first time starters in the field. If this is flight line, that's a little bit of a different story, but there aren't flight lines out there very often. And I don't think Beijing passed is that caliber here. So nae nae diamond is taking some play into the favorites she shows just a string of modest four for a long and 5 for a long drills for her debut. Mike pipi wins with first time starters about 10% of the time. I don't think the top jock won Hernandez has ridden a horse for pip thus far at the meat. So that could be telling as well or maybe that's just the reason that this horse is being bent down is that people are saying, well, Juan Hernandez is riding this horse or this Philly, she obviously is going to have some sort of a shot in this field. Doesn't always work out that way. But maybe Juan or his agent saw Nani diamond in one of her workouts and made a point of getting over to Mike piping and saying, hey, if we're open and when she runs, we want her. Anyway, everyone else would pay $20 or more if they got the job done in this third race over at San Anita. So they're making their way over to the gate right now at the great race place and. It will take some beating from a first time starter to beat beige and basher. But like I said, I'm not interested in two to 5 at all. Anyway, so good luck to the others in this spot. This would be a race where if you're not singling the favorite and I do not advise singling two to 5. Singling two to 5 shots is basically you getting nowhere ahead of the field. Because everyone's singling this horse. If you can somehow beat this horse or single against it or something like that, singling four to one shots, 8 to one shot, something like that. That's where you can put a little separation. Every ticket in the world on these pick four pick 5 pick 6 wagers is singling here. If you can somehow beat this filly and I don't know if you can. You're going to put some distance on yourself and everyone that you are betting against. And let's face it. You're betting against everybody else. It's nice to hang out with your Friends at the track. And in a perfect world, everybody wins. But the truth of the matter is you're rooting for yourself and you're betting against other people for the most part. All right, they have arrived at the gate for this third race at San Anita. It starts the 20 cent rainbow pick 6. So one of the rolling pick threes and obviously part of the early pick fours and pick 5s. Frank mirama on the mic at San Anita. And just last two going in, I apologize for that. Two more. Thank you, Frank for picking up the slack. Odessa will round out the field first time starter for Phil d'amato. Daughter of smiling Tiger, who's a little bit skittish behind the gate. Good-looking gray Philly about to move in. Now, Frank mirama is going to take him. They're in the gate. And there are general warfare began very quickly. Beijing be sure this matching strides, and here's Nene diamond coming through in the orange colors now. And then a diamond is faster than all. It does see as the gray on the outside for three and a half off the lead. The two trailers actually sand castle and miss Joe's candy the distant trailer. Nene diamond passes the half mile pole, cruising along. Two length lead. General warfare in second. Beijing Bashar is third in the red colors, joined by Odessa, who now takes the third spot. At the rail, Ashley sandcastle is 5 off the lead in a big gap to miss Joe's candy. It's Nene diamond coming to the quarter pole in command and widening at will. And Nene diamond has built up nearly a 5 length cushion turning for home. General warfare, Ashley sandcastle at the rail. Beijing Bashar is starting to pick up a little bit of momentum on the outside now with a furlong to go and then a diamond to catch four length lead. Beijing Bashir into second 16th pole and then a diamond never gave them a chance. Nene diamond dominant scores by three and a half under a hand rod. General warfare out finishes Beijing Bashar, then it was a photo between Ashley sandcastle and Odessa. Unofficial two, four, 5 and a photo for fourth in the third race at San Anita, the public who was playing the first time starter Nene diamond were correct Nate a diamond popping the gate showing a lot of speed in her career debut 22 and one for the quarter 45 seconds flat for the half. And as you heard in Frank mirama, he was race call really never giving them a chance in this spot, kept looking for somebody to start closing, including the favorite Bayesian bachir, but not only was she not closing, she didn't even get second as they were just kind of stalled in behind the leader and unofficial winner nae nae diamond who wins by probably three and a half or four lengths at first asking two, four, 5, and a photo for fourth. So the flavian Pratt favorite Bayesian Bashir disappoints once again. This time finishing third and lowering Pratt's win percentage even more at San Anita, he is not enjoying this Santa Anita meet thus far we'll see if he turns things around. Over at Oak Lawn park, they are getting close to post time for their 7th race. Maiden three year old Phillies here running for a purse of $90,000. They're going to go a mile and a 16th on the muddy track at Oklahoma. We've got a field of ten going to post number 8 door street is the favorite right now at two to one for robertino diodoro and Christian toro's doro street has sprinted twice in her first two starts. Second at Churchill going 6 furlongs, third place finish as the favorite going 5 and a half on a muddy track at Oakland last time out where she had a clear lead in mid stretch and ended up third beat and a half a length by classy Bridget and others classy Bridget's affiliate that has looked good basically in all of her starts and I think it's a pretty highly rated maiden race.

The financial disclosure filed with the SEC today indicates that Southwest lost as much as $825 million in its fourth quarter, more than half of that was due to revenue loss by canceling more than 16,000 flights in December 60,000 flights, the rest is made up primarily of compensation paid to affected customers and additional pay for employees, one potential cost that was not mentioned in that filing shockingly. On New Year's Day, California became the latest on a growing list of cities and states that require pay transparency in job posting. The idea being that that will level the power dynamic a little bit anyway between companies and would be employees. Another law took effect the first of the year in California, though, that could benefit workers in a different way by encouraging small business owners to give them those workers a stake in the company. Marketplaces Meghan mccarty carino has more on that one. The recipe for German star cookies is deceptively simple, even if they're pronunciation isn't to an English speaker. How do you say that? Christian Garcia at proof bakery in Los Angeles, combines zim sterner's short list of ingredients, just ground nuts, eggs, cinnamon, and sugar. Currently, surfing the powdered sugar and the reason I do that is to avoid pumpage. Sounds bad. No one really wants a whole chunk of sugar when they're biting into how quickly. Turning these raw ingredients into the perfect holiday treat is both a science and an art. It takes precision, passion, and just a dash of rum. Kind of like the alchemy it takes to run a successful small business in the rough and tumble food world. It's definitely takes like everyone who's there to make it work. When chef nae young ma opened proof bakery in 2010, she wanted it to be a place where workers could really feel invested in the business. That we kind of all work together and assist each other. But it took more than ten years to make that dream official. In late 2021, ma sold the business to the two dozen or so staff to get the cash, they got a loan that gets paid back with the profits of the company. And workers control a majority of the board. It's an old model. It's not new, but we don't really have a lot of examples in the U.S.. So I mean, we definitely need to help. They got help from a nonprofit called project equity, which also co sponsored the California legislation. The organization helps businesses navigate legal requirements, secure financing, and train employees for the transition to ownership. Cofounder Hillary a bell says there are a lot of misperceptions about the model. People sometimes hear about employee ownership and think, oh, that's something for, you know, for hippies, for someone that's not me. They think of everybody sitting around in a circle trying to decide what color pencil to buy. But she says most worker cooperatives like proof, or companies with employee stock ownership plans, keep the same management structure they had before, and pay a fair market price to owners. The main difference is that the fruits of the labor are shared broadly with all employees. The potential benefits of the model have spurred increasing interest across the political spectrum, says Joseph blasey, a distinguished professor at Rutgers, who has studied employee ownership for decades. It's been very, very hard for the working middle class to build wealth. Employees share ownership allows them to get at that part of the American Dream where you can own a piece of The Rock. He's found workers in the average employee stock ownership plan, build up more than a $130,000 in equity. Those businesses also tend to be more productive and have lower turnover. Lozzi says they're also a great option for the growing number of aging business owners, whose families don't want to take over and who often struggle to find an outside buyer. The issue here really in terms of barriers is awareness. Programs like californias are aiming to address that. The state currently has only about a hundred employee owned companies. But project equity has tallied hundreds of thousands of business owners near retirement age, who might want to consider the idea. And they can look to proof

"Megan, welcome. Thank you. It's my joy to be here. I'm a huge fan. Well, you are really honestly on Twitter and other places I've seen you say what you have to say. It's very encouraging to folks like me because there are so few in the evangelical universe who seem to see things with the clarity that I do by God's grace. And I want to talk to you about some of that stuff, a little bit of to get your background also to what brought you to this place because there's so many people out there that are either saying nothing along the lines of what you're saying or what I'm saying or they're flat out getting it wrong and opening the door to cultural Marxism in what I assume is ignorance of the evil of it. Well, you know, we'll get to that because I think there's different motivations here. I think there is some ignorance, but I also think there's some deliberate infiltration. And I don't think you can dismiss that. So, you know, I came to this place as somebody who came to faith a little later in life in my early 20s. I just kind of talked about this at the national conservatism conference that I, you know, I was someone who was very given to licentiousness in college and kind of embraced the Arizona state playboys number one party school life and I ended up really broken and lost and miserable and at that time my childhood faith came back to me and I remembered where do I go here? Where do I get help? And I'm not being dramatic to say I called on the lord and said, God just help. I didn't even know if I believed anymore, but I called out help and felt this compulsion to go back to church on my own and I started going back to church and during that time. Just really became a different person as one should when it comes to faith. Transformed, met my husband, formed a family, formed a career, just did things that I did not have the strength to do before that.

"I think you burned that PEEP hat. And I'm going to be honest with you. I'm kind of on your side, even though you were cutting my yellow pants with a blue blazer and a white shirt, which in certain situations looks perfectly great. She said she liked it. No, she said she didn't. She play this again for you. She did like it. She could hang on a second here. I'm having an allergy attack. She's had an allergy. I thought I'd be okay. Anyways, I am just catching up on the show. I'm a few days behind. And I was listening this morning about bob's a yellow pens. And his conviction that Mary has in a way with him and their last move. Firstly, from your description, these yellow pants with a white shirt and a blue blazer. I think sounds really swanky. She said it sounds flaky. Swanky. Swanky. Oh, I thought it was flaky. No swanky. God, you're so defensive in paranoid, nae nae. Okay, I take that back. I apologize. I thought she said flaky. No, no, she likes she's on your side. Okay. Okay. Well, let's go back to what we were talking about with his hat. And whether or not Mary got rid of my yellow pants. I think that I think where it wants, maybe at Easter, then never wear it again. If you're a woman, you do not want to be seen with the guy that says I'm hanging with my peeps, and he's wearing a purple pee pad. You just don't want to. I know women. You know what? There's a certain kind of man that wears that hanging with my peeps hat. I feel like I know him, and that guy is so much fun. He's the guy that everybody gravitates to to cook out. He is the fun guy. What other kind of guy, but a fun guy? He keeps and she's got to be there. Do you think that is her name nanette or did I just come up with that? I think you just came up with that. I didn't get nanette. Did you nae nae bob? I did not. Well, she is a ney ney to that hat. I can just hear that in her voice. I think Mary destroyed those pants, I do. I mean, you're saying there that your wife is not being truthful with you when you ask her if she got rid of your pants. And I'm sure when you said to her married, did you get rid of my pants? She replied, of course not bob. You know how you are. Was this something like that? It was exactly like that. You know what's great about that is in the moment. You don't really have a response, but when you walk away and think about it, you know how you are. I'm the kind of man that loses his pants. You know, let me just say this. I am the kind of man who loses what's in my pants. Oh. But nuts. But the actual pants. Not the actual piece. That's right. That's right. Well, man, that if that is your name, or even if it's not, you're a charming person and it was nice to have you on the show. Why don't you join? Why don't you join her, folks, get the Bobby cherry app and let's hear what you're thinking. This is bob and cherry. At the bottom and cherry show, we love celebrating anniversaries. But there is one anniversary that makes us cringe just a little. Everyone in the pool. That time accidentally put an SUV into a swimming pool, both whoops. Oops. We're celebrating the anniversary of us putting an SUV in the pool during one of our RV crazy tours. And to commemorate that, we're selling tank tops and t-shirts with a picture of the SUV in the pool to get yours, just go to bob and sherry dot com. Hit the shop tab. You'll make a splash. Okay, I have a story about my children and a bathroom. But this time it has nothing to do with how messy or filthy or disgusting. This is a level that is so high that Kevin is now convinced that there's a conspiracy against him. Here we go. So I get a text message from my youngest. The other day, from inside the house. You know it's like that scary movie where the call is coming from inside the house. Text message comes from inside the house. And the text message reads, mom, the water isn't working question mark. It's not hot and also my toilet doesn't work. It's not flushing and there's no water coming into it. And I looked at this text message, like, wait, what? So I turn on the sink in the kitchen where I'm standing in the hot water comes out. So I'm like, the hot water's fine. I walked down and sure enough, the toilet is not working. And I take the tank off of it because at the old station, I did morning drive and was also the staff Homer. So I took the tank off and I looked around and it was like, boy, everything seems to be attached. Now I know that, thanks to my old job, everything seems to be attached and I don't understand why it's working. So I said, we're going to have to get, we're going to have to get Kevin involved in this remind me. So the next day goes by, I've completely forgotten about it. Completely. Another day goes by and my kid says to me, I think I've solved the toilet problem. Oh, did you fix it? Well, no, you know those bob and sherry water bottles that you have. I've just been filling those up and dumping those in. And I thought to myself, another quality use for the Bobby. It seems so pretty. So I walk into the bathroom and sure enough, there's our water bottle with our logo on it next to the toilet, which, you know, was like, I thought, okay. It's disrespectful. So I said, well, I'm really proud of you that you come up with a temporary solution, but let's go get Kevin. So we go, Kevin goes, what's the problem? And I said, I don't know. I took the tank off. It's not working. I need you to go look at it. So he goes down and he looks at it. And I hear some expletives and some laughter, and then he comes back up. And he goes, well, I fixed it. And I said, what was wrong with it? And he said, the water was turned off. You know, there's a little faucet nozzle down on the floor next to the toilet. He said, why did you turn the water off? I said, I did not turn. Why would I turn the water off? I never go in there. I didn't do it. He said, well, somebody turned the water off. And I'm like, nobody. Carry me a wouldn't even know how to turn the water off. I don't know how the water got turned off, but it wasn't us. And Kev goes, the cats don't have thumbs. There's no way one of you turned the water up. So I go to tell you, I'm on his side. I want to hear how this ends. I don't care if you have filled with righteous indignation. And I'm like, Kevin said he fixed your toilet. He came and he goes, yeah, it's working great. Everything's fine now. I said, he said that we turned the water off. Can you believe that as if. And there's a pause and carry me, and goes, well, it was screaming at me, and I didn't know how to make it stop. So I did turn the water off. And I'm like, what do you mean? It was screaming at you. Screaming at me. So the city has been doing work on water lines and our neighborhood. Remember, we had toilet geyser day, where giant fountains of water guys are up out of every toilet when everywhere. Right. So, you know, sometimes when they work on your lines, when they turn the water back on, it's like that kind of thing. I said, so it was screaming at you, and she said, yeah, and it was like really aggressive and super loud. So I just turned the water off. And so I stood there for a second and said, did you at any time? Make the connection between parenting the water off. And the toilet not working. And my child who is a liberal arts major, by the way, my new stem here. My child said, I considered it as a strong possibility, but

"Education movement, we got to realize there's going to be a long-term battle. What's your thoughts looking ahead? I agree with you completely. Ultimately, more pessimistic and more optimistic. And I know that's a cop out answer, but I'll tell you why. I think the darkest day of American education or the darkest period of American education was actually the 1970s. And I say that because classical Christian classical forms of education in K through 12 were completely gone. They almost outlawed homeschooling completely. They tried to outlaw Christian school and Catholic schooling. How close they were to consolidate and complete government control of the classroom was right here. And classical thinking was basically buried in the K through 12. Thankfully it courageous parents 40 years ago started forming schools today. There are almost 500 classical Christian K through 12 schools across America. There's thousands of more online options in homeschool options. There are other great Christian schools and classical schools out there. So the renaissance has begun. The insurgency has begun. To use a word of the left, we're in the awareness raising phase of this as well. Parents just have to know a that government schools are fundamentally broken and I would argue at this point irredeemably broken this generation of kids. And as a result, you've got to look for alternatives and not all private schools are created the same. In fact, most private schools are more woke than their public counterparts, especially if you're paying a lot of money for them. And a lot of religious schools are actually quite progressive as well. So you've got to find the right schools and then go find them, but there's more options than ever. There's more awareness than ever. And the unions are have damaged the brand of public education more than ever. So these Republicans that you talk about who in the past have been for school. It's just like the pro choice Republicans are like, well, how do we message this roe V wade? Same idea. It's like be full throated about being four school choice because parents now are more informed about the depth of the problem than they've ever been before because of COVID because of unions. And because of the nonsense they're pushing. So let's press the option. Give them that option. So I'm optimistic in that sense. I mean, you saw the ruling out of Maine where they allowed for parents to take the money to religious schooling. You saw what happened in Arizona with the universal voucher program. They just passed $7000 for every single-family. Now is the moment to make this our top issue. And it doesn't just have to be, here's a particular type of school, even though our book does argue for that. It could just be straight up educational choice because you're being underserved, whether you're an inner city or a rural school and the options are out there more than ever. So it's worse than it's ever been, but our opportunities are greater than they've ever been. And if we can be intentional about a 100 year strategy, I'd say we're about 40 years into it. To be honest with you. And it might not feel that way, but we are 40 years into the counter revolution here on education. And we have an opportunity if we get some courageous leaders. Well, I think you paid you just hit it. And I think the one thing that I remember being in the state legislature before going to Congress is the teacher union to understand. And even like in Georgia, which is a non collective marketing state, GAE is a full blown union with the NAE. And then you have a group called page down here, which is the largest quote of the non union. They act just like a union. They do. And if the legislature I can always remember when anything about education funding or anything else come up, it was always well, you better do this because these groups, you know, want that. And so it was that pressure as we go along. They're going to make you anti education. You don't want to be the anti education candidate. Same thing with the federal Department of Education. That's over. The schools are failing kids, they haven't delivered excellence in public schools for 50 years. Like, that's obvious. That's laid bare. And now we're ideologically indoctrinating kids. You are anti education if you're feeding into the complex that's continuing to do this. And it's not a hard argument to make. And you know, guys like you who understand an intuitively and know how to articulate can make that case hopefully we're able to educate politicians, pundits, leaders and others to just be unafraid. Well, take the stands. I mean, because at the end of the day, if you don't stand for your values, if you don't stand for what you believe is right, even if it costs you politically, then you're just, you might as well not even articulate them because at the end of the day, the other side is going to win. And we get that..

"Be day one like on the sale side, but the benefit absolutely is there and for years and years to come. I'm concerned now that we're going to flood the market and we're going to now shift back the other way. Cliff Childers is the national sales manager for NAE N one, a warranty administrator headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio. In his role, cliff leads the sales division and is also responsible for the ongoing development and delivery of the cutting edge products that NE provides to their agent and dealer clients. Prior to his promotion to national sales manager in 2019, cliff served as an account executive with NAE for 8 years. Cliff's main objectives during his time as an account executive were to provide individualized in field support for his agency clients, drive agency development to a new level and develop lasting relationships resulting in new client acquisitions. Cliff has over 21 years of experience in the automotive industry. He began his career managing a full service repair facility for Bridgestone firestone, and then entered the administration industry, where he served 5 years as an account executive for Zürich. Cliff decided to make the change to NAE because of his belief in the vision and unique culture of the company offers. Cliff is a graduate of the University of Kansas where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in human biology and a minor in Spanish. NAE is very proud of cliff for being featured in agent entrepreneur magazine as one of their 40 under 40. Cliff resides in Shawnee, Kansas with his beautiful bride Brittany and their two daughters Cora and Chloe. All right, so cliff, welcome to app. Thank you so much for being a part of our podcast here and a guest to talk about fixed ops February and a program that I know is near and dear to your heart warranty forever. So thank you for being a part of this. Yeah, absolutely. Thanks for having me looking forward to it. Yeah, and definitely focusing on the fixed top piece. So thank you. Yeah. Yeah, very cool. So I'm very familiar with your background, some people may not know how many years or decades we go back to each other, but I am excited for you to share your story with all the listeners out there. I think it's a really cool story to tell. So why don't you give us a brief background on yourself and your professional journey? Yeah, so I'm glad you framed it that way, 'cause I was gonna ask you, do you want me to start with the 20 years that you and I, you know, over four different opportunities have worked together, either side by side, or in some capacity, because it doesn't leave a whole lot left. So yeah, so really my story went to the University of Kansas and during that time, as you know, but many of the listeners or viewers don't. I ran Bridgestone firestone operation. And really, that was the foundation for my career. And the reason for that, not only did it teach me how to lead and mentor. In some cases, some individuals such as technicians who can be challenging at times, you know, how to deal with the general consumer deliver bad news, of course, because nobody really separates funds for car repair. But really, it'll allow me to focus on the fixed ups piece. And everything that I learned in that opportunity, which was huge. And then from there, you and I, again, you working with you at Bridgestone firestone, then created the opportunity at Zürich where I was a field rep in Oklahoma. Not only on the side of things, but also property and casualty. And what a great state. I do thank you every day for helping me sell property and casualty in Oklahoma..

"Given the promo code, really? Manscape. When the fear is gone, there will be nothing. Only I will remain. Okay. I've got manscaped manners cost us so much money. It really has just a lot. What the fuck is an evangelical? The turbine evangelical comes from the Greek word for gospel Evangelion, which sounds way cooler than gospel, or evangelical. According to the dictionary, the term simply means of or denoting a tradition with Protestant Christianity emphasizing the authority of the Bible, personal conversion, and the doctrine of Salvation by faith in the atonement. And as concise as that definition may seem, it does beg the question, are there traditions within Protestant Christianity that don't emphasize the Bible personal conversion or Salvation? And if you ask an evangelical, they'd probably say yes and lump all such traditions under the heading of mainline Protestantism. But if you asked a mainline Protestant if their religious tradition emphasized the authority of the Bible personal conversion and Salvation, they'd almost certainly tell you, yes, so clearly someone's full of shit. And we're talking religion here. So odds are it's everybody. Now, if you trace the term back to the 16th century, it was largely a synonym for Protestant to find the point where it diverges into a distinct type of Protestantism. You have to fast forward to the first great awakening in the 1730s. In its early form, it was largely an amalgamation of the three P's of being boring as bucket a party. Pietism, presbyterianism and puritanism. Rather than representing a denomination or sect of Protestantism, the evangelical tag denoted a movement within a number of Protestant sects. In many ways, the movement can be described as puritanism light, and grew in direct response to declining attendance and local piety in the previously puritanical cities of Massachusetts. While less cynical historians described this as a method of refurbishing God's message for a more modern day, realistic as a bunch of puritan preachers removing all the inconvenient shit from their religion because they were running out of money. For example, during the great awakening denominations that used to say that it took a lifetime of sturdy contemplation to achieve true assurance of one's faith, started saying it was assigning bonus that you just got for saying the magic Jesus words. This do nothing and get rewards approach to religion caught on quickly in the North American colonies, but as much because of the evangelical focus on missionary work as the new low price. Unlike many of the traditional forms of Protestantism, evangelicals held a firm belief that one wasn't doing their true duty to God unless they were all up in everybody's shit about it. This led to an increase in religious influence in government, schools, and the average American social life. But like puritanism before it, the evangelical movement became stagnant and outdated and by the early 20th century it was dominated by fundamentalists so fundamentalists that they actually called themselves fundamentalists. A desire by some more PR conscious members of the movement led to the term neo evangelical in the post World War II era, which we now simply call evangelicals. So yes, the swath of Christians that include pat Robertson, Brian Fisher and John hagy started with an effort to be less fundamentalist. Of course, knowing where the evangelicals have been, doesn't get as much closer to understanding what the fuck they are, especially since the history of the movement is largely defined by what they're not. And modern evangelical groups are of no more use as their primary goal is to make groups of people they represent seem as large as possible, even if that requires using rather fuzzy definitions. For example, the world evangelical alliance claims to represent more than 600 million evangelical Christians worldwide, which represents about a 195% of the total evangelical population. They get there by employing the bevington quadrilateral, which you can tell us full of shit because they didn't just call it the bevington square. They did a 5 syllable word in there to make it sound thinky. Basically, this approach defines evangelicals through their theology. It posits four key theological elements and in the tradition of over naming laid down by gratuitously polysyllabic use of quadrilateral, they define these four elements as follows. Biblicism. The belief that all essential spiritual truths could be found in the Bible. Cruci centrism, a focus on the atoning work of Christ's death on the cross, conversion is the belief that human beings need to be converted and activism. The belief that the gospel needs to be expressed in effort. If anybody strongly agrees with all four of these statements, the NAE considers them an evangelical. The problem here obviously is that you're going to catch a lot of fish in that net that would vehemently disagree with your classification. Hell, by that definition, you can find an awful lot of evangelical Catholics. Even further confusing the definition is the tendency of the modern media to use the term evangelical as a shorthand for white Protestant, which is all the more baffling since wasp is already there and takes away less effort to say. So despite looking into the etymology, the dictionary, the history, the organizational definition and the demographic definition, I wound up back where I started. See, to me, the term evangelical simply means extra annoying non Catholic Christian and the more I dug into it, the more I realized that truly was an operational definition. In other words, an evangelical is a fundamentalist with enough PR savvy not to use the F word. And.

"Naile and her community fought tooth and nail, and eventually triumphed in getting the Allen co owned oil facility to close. Naile is now 20 and has spent more than half her life fighting oil drilling in neighborhoods across her city. But it's comic great personal hardship and sacrifice. I stopped by asking nae Ellie to describe growing up on west 23rd street in LA. My neighborhood is made up of the most hardworking people. You can imagine there are people that work 1416 hour days to provide for their families that are the most happy and caring sense of community that you can imagine if my mom wasn't able to pick me up from school. She would just say, or a neighbor is gonna pick you up and take care of you for the day. No big deal, and I would just hang out with our neighbors or if we were walking and we saw the ice cream man and we didn't have any cash, it was totally fine to just grab ice cream or two and just pay him tomorrow when I saw him again. It was that sense of community that we had. It was a sense of just everyone being a neighbor and as a family, you don't have salt glass the name or maybe he'll have salt and tomatoes for you. Is that sense of family that you could knock on everybody's door with their home and their family being as welcoming to you as your own is to you? And do you still live there? I moved when I was 14, but I'm back in my head still. When I think of home, I do think of that community and I don't think I'll ever feel as home as I felt there. Nay Ellie, you also had some less than great neighbors. It was our neighbor that our silent killer neighbor, Alan gold energy was growing up 30 feet across the street from an active oil well, and breathing those toxic emissions and seeing our health decline as a matter of that, it was then a common conversation starter within our community for the parents to be like, my daughter had an asthma attack last night, how's your son, asthma doing? Or my daughter had such a bad nose bleed. That's how we would greet each other..

"Man. Burning out is his prep for space was three consecutive colonoscopies and playing rocket man. And then he made out with a green woman. And drinking 5 insurers, I kid you not when you don't pay attention to the news as I don't, you get to a point where you're not sure what's real and what's not. So when you said Jeff Bezos space rocket, I thought, wait, didn't Elon Musk have a space rocket wait a second. Didn't Richard Branson? Wait a second, Richard Branson. Wait, does NASA still just wait? Is are people just randomly shooting up into space? Can I go to the moon? I actually haven't followed any of this. It's like electric cars. One day, it's just pure science fiction. The next day, Chevy makes one. And in the meantime, all I've done is raised kids and I tuned out for 5 years and didn't read the paper and didn't watch the late night shows. And I come back and they're Chevy's making electric cars and rando people are going into space. You don't need NASA anymore. Talk about what's Jewish and what's going. Going into space, George. All the boyish billionaires buy space rockets. You know, you know what the Jewish billionaires do? They buy the freaking mess. That's what they do. There's no we want suffering here on earth, not in some other dimension. No, but this is a very good point because I think the reason that this is funny, right? The reason that 90 year old William Shatner going up in a space is funny is because it is actually inherently very Goya ish to go to like, why would you go to space? There's no good pastrami in space. Just sit down, you know what I mean? It's the Mel Brooks thing, Jews in space, right? Like it's inherently absurd. Yeah, and William Shatner ought to have listened because if you heard him since he'd come back, oh wait, he's back. How long did you think he was gonna be out there? We didn't know they go on Tuesday or something. I mean, I thought he was just up and back, man. It was quick. But then when he returned, he gave all these soliloquies that you could be generous and kind and soulful and wonderful and loving and call them very touching about the planet and its blueness and the importance of keeping the one planet that we have. Or you could be me and say that, you know, that trip to the past the atmosphere did not do well for the cognitive abilities of this non Arian. I mean, George Takei would have been much funnier in space. Oh my. Wait, but there's late breaking additional Star Trek news, which is that Brent spiner, the Jewish data has just released a new book called fan fiction, which is this bizarre mashup of memoir and stalker mystery, apparently it starts with someone sending Jean Luc Picard a pig penis. It's a whole thing. Anyway, I'm very excited for it. Also, I went to Wikipedia page just to double check that Brent spiner was in fact Jewish. And I really just very briefly want to read this early life section to you because you know everyone goes to Wikipedia in order to learn if the celebrity is Jewish. They really left it very ambiguous on this particular Wikipedia page. Brent J spiner was born on February 2nd, 1949 in Houston, Texas to silvia nae Schwartz and Jack spiner, a Jewish family who owned a furniture store. At age 29, Jack spiner died of kidney failure when his son was ten months old after his father's death, spiner was adopted by his mother's second husband, Saul mince, whose surname he used between 1955 and 1975 and just to make sure that you really get the point at the end of this paragraph they have, he is of the Jewish religion. He is of the Hebrew persuasion. If soul mints and Schwartz didn't tip you off. And Sylvia and the mom named Sylvia. What I love about Wikipedia is that depending on who the author of the entry is, it'll sometimes just come out and be like, this guy is a big yid. Whereas The New York Times obituaries, The New York Times a picture for Bret spiner will be like, he was of Eastern European ancestry. His family had emigrated from Europe sometime between World War I and World War II. I mean, you know, the times are like, can write 8000 words on someone and all the readership at the time is thinking is, but was he Jewish? And they'll never tell you to Jewish. Whereas Wikipedia is like Sylvia and Schwartz and he's of the Jewish persuasion and.
