"The cleveland browns. Two thousand two. The last time this franchise was in the playoffs but they beat the steelers yesterday's and they get in and dan. They started out running the football with nick. Chubb that power. Run game with nick chubb. You see that offensive line. Kind of changing. Denting the line of scrimmage and then chubs depth pig playmaking physical and not between the tackles but also got big enough speed and baker. Getting don is looking for tight. End up ten nine on first and goal in the third quarter this afternoon. Yeah the fact that they went back to this he missed it in the same play gets his is. Backside finds often prefer touchdown. No ben in this game mason rudolph way had some good moments. And then he had this one really good blitz packet by the browns defensive drop myles garrett into and then that safety to sit there like all right. Don't leave the ball mason. Rudolph shoots turner for this defense. Need mental switched sides on the field because it went to the fourth quarter and then it went to jarvis landry and the browns were up twenty four to nine not love this play. Call you kind of get. Landry sideline to sideline and you handed off for the touchdown. And then finally you get the ball out of pittsburgh's defense something that chase claypool done. So well look at his ability. Go up kind of contest for that. Catch over jumped. The fence and back touchdown pitchford. That made it twenty four sixteen and then under two minutes to go in the game and this is juju smith schuster and all of a sudden. It's twenty four twenty two dan. How about the two point conversion you gotta make sure at some point. This guy's got the opportunity to go high point of all scrambled around. Give them a chance to go get his hands on that. Football fewer still had chances stephen. Carlson somehow manages to come up with this on side kick. he's eighty nine cleveland. There for a moment there was kind of between the wickets. If you know what i mean. But he manages to hang onto it. And then dan baker mayfield runs with the first down the isis. The player not love the play call by defense came look at the emotion from baker mayfield. You don't kind of representing that city. Just look how much it means to him to finally get that done in cleveland. Good for him good for them. The browns are in the playoffs. The afc wild card round will kick off saturday.

"So Tom One day after that. Espn interview aired. And this whole thing kind of blew up again. Myles Garrett went to Tanzania. He was so looking forward to this trip. Anyway just because I wanted to be a part of this program but it's almost like a a way to just kinda get away from that so it was kind of his way to just kind of get into something that he was really involved in out into the Tanzanian Bush to interact with people from different tribes. We spent a lot of time the Messiah Trod and they are very nomadic people and why they are nomadic is because they're always kind of in search of that clean water that we talking about it just felt like a reset especially as the trip went on and you wrote that he was basically able to be anonymous over there. These kids we were going to these schools. And they're looking at him. And if you've ever been to Tanzania I didn't see anybody there was even like six foot. And here's this big six foot five strapping two hundred seventy five pound guy and these kids were just looking at him in awe early on the trip. We were visiting a school that had water and there were all these kids out there. They started like tossing football into the group of kids. Flowing passes back and forth and the kids would kind of run to one side and the other side and then for whatever reason at one point they just decided to charge miles and it was one of the few times in the AAA saw him like it was like a belly laugh and he's backing up and backing up backpedaling quarterback and he was under siege. It was that just kind of that release moment. Like oh my gosh. She's so much fun like these kids. Don't know anything about football. I don't know anything about these kids. Kids are the same anywhere you go. They just love the play and then she some of the other things that he witnessed one of the biggest ones was. You would see this site all over northern Tanzania women digging sand digging in dirt trying to get to the water table to find clean water a several miles or their kids or a women are protect themselves from wildlife. It's Hanes you're seeing lions in jackals. You're seeing all kinds of animals on. They have to walk through these. These areas to get to their water source. Is there the day to day living? It's a brutal way of living in. It's hard to even comprehend. All they have to do all they they suffer through. You couldn't look at it coming from America and not think. Oh My Gosh. Can you imagine having to do this? And with miles sparked something much different as a kid. Miles loves dinosaurs. He still does and their parents used to let him dig in the backyard and not not like a foot or two but he would like to the point where he could stand in the pits that he was digging looking for bones or fossils and went on and on until one day his dad kind of fell in one of the holes and my said miles. Nowhere holes stop digging and miles looked at that and what he saw these women in these holes all he could think of was. I used to do this for fun. And there are doing this to scratch out an existence to get enough water to their families that to me was the moment on the trip. Since where our first world third world problems kind of collide and it was not moment right there whereas miles like wow. This is really serious here. And did he say anything to you about the helmet incident at this point? He's a few days removed from the ESPN interview and basically his point. Is I'm done talking about it. It's doing no good anything I say right now is inflammatory about the actual helmet hitting incident. So we'll see if he continues that so far he hasn't done any other interviews. Tom Assuming that we have a twenty twenty season. What's at stake for myles Garrett during the upcoming year this next season is huge? It's huge for him to get through this next season without any more major incidents and miles knows he acknowledged this in our discussion. There will be players that try to bait him. Try TO BAIT him into penalties losing his cool. He's their best player. He's the browns best defensive player. So I think that's probably a positive step for him to try to take every available means to step away from heated situations which let's be honest is not easy in that profession. It's a violent game. He's there to bring pain to quarterbacks and running backs and get a walk that fine line between being aggressive and being reckless. When one thing we we haven't really mentioned is that you know myles Garrett for better or for worse is he's really still just a kid right I mean he turned twenty four in December. How do you see him handling all the challenges? He's GonNa face going forward. Miles is a very shy and one of the things that Chris. Long is trying to get through to him. As look in doing this you have to kind of come out of your shell. You have to be are basically our chief fundraiser. And I think what's going to be interesting is to see if that's the same with the browns. If he's going to become more of a leader yes he's already their best player. He was their best player when he put Jersey on but can he become that emotional type of leader. That just follow me boys. We're going to find a way to win this game. He's also understood. I think from this. Espn interview that. He has to be careful that any kind of conversation that he has about. This topic is going to create headlines. I think that's to me was the biggest thing I took away from him other than the just knowing that he can't cross the line on the field. You can't cross the line with the media too right. You GotTa be careful what you say. He said that the thing that has helped him. In many ways the support of the city of Cleveland many of his teammates current players former players have reached out to him trying to say. But what you did was terribly wrong with. Don't let yourself be defined by this Tom. Thank you so much for joining us. Thank you you can follow. Tom Reads coverage of the Cleveland. Browns at the athletic dot com here are some other stories. "One in the World League myles Garrett Mason Rudolph who was the quarterback Rudolph throws a little swing pass and Garett just as Rudolph gets rid of the ball. Garrett kind of him. It's a simultaneous thing. Then all of a sudden there's a struggle between those two Garrett rips the helmet off of Rudolf ejections. Coming out of that may be suspended. That's right suspensions. And in what I describe is just a moment of madness and no one's ever disputed that ends up hitting Rudolph over the head with his own helmet beyond Gosh. That's one of the worst things I've ever seen on professional sports. You know Joe I a shocking. It was unprecedented. We you know. We've seen people occasionally take someone homeless path and they will throw it but never has anyone to my knowledge weaponized as far as hitting another player over the head with it. It was just shocking visual. We can say for fairly certain this was out of character for myles. Garrett yes he had some personal fouls in the past including punching the Tennessee. Titans tight end in the first game of the season. But one of the real ironies about all of this was before the game against the steelers. The head coach had come out and pointed to of saying. Here's someone who's learned their lesson. Miles was taking all those penalties at the beginning of the season. And here's someone who has shown a lot more discipline than of course we also would happen when he swung helmet. The bottom part of helmet came down on Mason. Rudolph headed part the pattern. The thin part with the ear where the ear pads are and that part of the helmet is actually flexible. It moves a little bit if he had hit it the other way like if he had hit what the crown of his Helmet Mason Rudolph might be unconscious in hospital Because that thing came down with a lot of force on some ways the luckiest people in that stadium were Mason Rudolph and myles Garrett for Mason Rudolph. He could have been seriously injured. Had that helmet been turned a different way and the other lucky person was miles gert because it wasn't turned the other way the League has decided that it's suspended myles Garrett without pay indefinitely for the remainder of the regular season and postseason steelers center Markey's Pals Gareth's parents were actually at the game. They saw it happen life then. Miles ended up going home night. They were waiting for him at the house miles so they really didn't have to say much but he was very happy to have their support and that's something that went on for the next couple of weeks. There were thoughts. That would somebody in Cleveland with the district. Attorney filed charges against him. Those first couple of hours afterwards. There was wondering if this would become a criminal case. So He's dealt with that he had to go through a period there would. It was really difficult for him to kind of you know how they leave the house but leave the area because it was everywhere and after myles. Garrett was reinstated back in February. He made another decision that came back to haunt him back in the league. Suffer like it's it's a good time for me to to share now only been doing but you know what I'm doing to take a step forward and leave all divine. He did his interview with. Espn I think ESPN have just reached out to him and said. Hey We'd love to do this interview. One of the things that he was hoping to talk about was the water voice program. He said that they spoke for forty five minutes. You saw the outside the line piece on television. It was about six and a half minutes. What ended up happening is it all became about that play in the aftermath of it. He says some worry that we're going down. What did he say to you? Mean he called me the n Word Communist stupid and we're I don't like I don't say inward whether it's never addressed the public and said Rudolph use a racial slur against him. It had been leaked through the press that when he was speaking to Roger Goodell. That's what he told Roger Goodell but Myles Garrett did come out and say it on the air and that was the explosive detail that came out of that interview along with the idea that in going through some of the details of the incident he came off as ill prepared to league said. They didn't find evidence of a racial slurs. Was your reaction to that most quarterbacks where Mike's Helmets he's somehow losses helmet and had to get another one without a might. He thought that there was a microphone. In the quarterback's helmet there was only a speaker so when plays are called in the quarterback can only hear it. He can't say it because a big heart of this whole story with the racial slur was it was never picked up on audio and the NFL has said that multiple times so he's really has become a case of Rudolf. Denying it and not backing away from it and Mike Tomlin head. Coach of the steelers actually went on. I take to defend his player and I think the National Football League office was very clear today. Lost a thorough investigation among all parties involved including the interviewing of people and in the analysis of technology that was on that feel and they found no evidence of miles allegations and one of the best comments is from his father. Who said miles? I think I would save that for the autobiography I thought Oh my goodness that is probably ten thousand. Browns fans. A lot of other people probably felt the same way because he did not tell anybody he did not tell the browns he was doing the interview. Miles has said what he said about in his mind what he heard. Rudolf say and again. I'm not saying he did say it or didn't set but he's been pretty clear about that part of it. What the DAD was saying and I think a lot of browns fans and a lot of people around the League. We're seeing is miles. Be Smarter with what you say when you say it. And I think that's kind of what his dad is trying to impart on him in the kind of stopped digging yourself a whole Sitcom Tom. You spoke with Chris Long. The former rams defensive end who recruited myles. Garrett to the water boys program long before any of this happened. What was his reaction to the helmet incident and the aftermath there. I don't know how how much we can swear on this show but it was that. Oh crap moment when he saw Chris long had to make a major decision at that moment. Am I going to keep this guy on our team? Our organization is all about getting donations and getting players involved in this and is this incident to take away from that and Chris took about two days and he decided we're going to stick with him. Miles needs us. We need miles life right now is a lot it forces us to always be on and even though we're all stuck indoors it can still feel like everything is go go go but every now and then it's really important to stop and take a second to chill and when. Who always in the mix I thought is. It's definitely the most competitive no group in all of this. You see this right can play basketball Texas or just see if some of that. I'll have we won't tale some. You may well. I saw that I saw on instagram. You're out here. Ruined Double Hand Wind Double Backwards Dunks if the cavaliers call tomorrow and they say `I miles. We need a guy in the post. What's your production? What could you do in the NBA? The Post from not doing anything on the deal. If you WANNA put me in the position I can. I can no free roam and go from the block to the to the top of the key to the to the corner and just you know make plays at the guy at the young average a nice like fifteen fifteen hundred seven eight. You Got Fifteen and eight hundred nine nine. That's pretty good man. That's pretty good couple more. I'll get you out of here. You went to college with Alex. Larussa do what's it been like watching him explode into pop culture on on the L. A. Lakers it's been fun now. I didn't I didn't see that coming and I always knew was a great player even even better guy but you know no one all the the talent they had on there. I didn't think the spotlight was gonna going to have enough to be no shined on him. He's he's found his own niche and now he's had a couple of great blocks a couple of great dunks and I know they're always talking about the little headband. He's now he's making a name for himself. No Discount Nem and make some big plays and he's always very consistent now whether he's going not. He's he's not tenacious on defense. He's getting bored. He's assistant he's making good passes and just weighs he's always supposed to be he's He's a the perfect role player. He can step up Novia. Have a role in your how unbelievably all court was it to pose neck for the ESPN. The magazine body. She didn't see an issue asking that question. Bro. I don't I don't know I couldn't do. It was definitely different and knowing that my family was somewhere in the vicinity. I know they work. They're watching but they still had to like get into the truck behind this and income and I had a ruled on them but like they started to follow me knowing that their son at anytime they come around any rock or or corner netted posing it was the back of my head it was it was occupants the Tigra for at that time the group that was what they they met as comfortable as possible. And are they? They made an enjoyable experience. I know that a a couple of other people who who did some some shots were also very very comfortable and very happy with resulted. Now that's a shot at bond with my my instagram post. I go way back with him as you know so. It's been fun. What was he has the influence on you? I mean he's he is. The best passer should come a anna of thinking of not pass rushers strictly in college. But he's he's the best and just watching him and it's hard to it's hard not to emulate the things that he does unfit With the way he he taps the way he sets up this moves and he has a variety now with his. His long arm is his speed. The Power Jab steps now that that He goes right a chap a Benzi as wave and who. I haven't touched them. Arrival right under his arm like the way he can maneuver his body and king around the corner and like anybody else but just taking a little bit from from Perriman knowing my own style of play now do start to be a mix mixed back. What's your opinion is new collective bargaining agreement out of that. I won't say that but I think we could. We could have got more than we could. We could have done a little bit. Better we always thought we should. We shouldN'T SETTLE FOR ANYTHING UNDER FIFTY FIFTY. I know the end of the NBA. I believe at fifty one forty nine or at fifty fifty one or the other so the the the players are getting a fair share. I know that that seventeen game is going to hurt. I didn't think that Shoulda Shoulda gone through but no nothing to do. Now play pray that all guys a safety net that seventeenth game and just making sure that guy's able to take care of their bodies. I know there's another game in the playoffs as well so it wasn't it wasn't the most ideal I know. They increase our benefits in health benefits. But now it's a little over a little give and take. There are some things that we we liked. The deal needs to be done like a things after we should share held out to improve upon. But it was. Okay I give it give it a B B. Much last thing for those of us who don't play and don't know that bathing that you take every single day. What is the impact that seventeen gay? How does that change things for you as a player? You know you you go through practice on. You're going full speed. You're flying around but you have less contact almost a minimal job yet. Less contact going into that game. You're journalist pumping you're hitting guys you're flying around that amount of stress and strain is is almost unlike any other sport and no. You're you're flying around at any time out. Somebody you know fall into volunteer leg. You could fall actually you know. Get your arm cod. There's so many things that can happen in a game that don't happen usually but there's there's always a chance and I know that know that someone's coming up next year someone season will be Dome Ajar because someone gets hurt wondering are key players. Get hurt in this this last game now trying to secure secure a spot in someone's GonNa get hurt that they need to go further in the playoffs in going to throw everything off but you just got to be able to take care of your body and drag yourself nothing getting any soft tissue injuries kind of minimalizing the belief for stuff like that to happen but I know that It's it's bound Napa Man. "So you drank a beer pong tournament on Saturday and then on Sunday I get a video from you and I want to talk about what happened Sunday. Yes I did send you a video on Sunday. I took my son Cameron. Who is fourteen over to the Presbyterian church parking lot and Gave Him his first driving? Listen and I will tell you. He did a great job as you saw in the video and he was so giddy like he couldn't believe it and I took him so I got this idea of where to take him driving From a friend and that is a great place to take your children to learn how to drive the cemetery because there's very little traffic. There's a lot of turns and you know you're going slow. And it was just the best and we spent a couple of hours anyway. Learn how to drive for the first time and I loved watching how his confidence built as he went. But I'll tell you early on it can be a little dicey me. They don't know anything about how are too depressed. The Accelerator Howard. Depress the break. They don't know how to work any of the instrumentation and so it was a step back in time and it's funny. He had the same problem I had man. Mr Muncie back in the summer of nineteen ninety the summer of Nineteen Ninety two. I did drivers it for the first. Time Mr Muncie took Tommy Western me on are driving less and so my daddy had. I grew up on a farm so I had been driving trucks forever. But that's a little different than the stress and the anxiousness in the anxiety of doing it with your gym teacher and so I had the same. Prop Cameron had the exact same problem that I had when I first started driving and that is not understanding the spatial awareness of the width of the vehicle. And so he wants to age right. He's encroaching right right right and running over curves and things. I did the exact same thing and I did it so bad. In fact that I'm knocked the Right Mirror off of these Chevrolet Brown diarrhea. Third Brown Chevy Cavalier that. We use to do driver's Ed class and that didn't want over like A. I was GonNa say you went over like a third and the punch bowl but I'm not sure if I could use the word at all and I've now said her twice you can use So anyway. He did a great job. I'm proud of him. We got a lot of work to do. It's important to me that he's ready to go before he ever gets there and understands the rules of the road and understands how to break in the fact that you break before you get to the curve and that way you're you're easing into the curve and then you're accelerating out of the turn and all of those things and he just did an awesome job and every single time every lap we did every time he went I love to watch him. Feel with confidence and then finally look like data. I'm ready to be done with this man. I need some water and a snack. It's funny because I was the same thing I remember the first time with my parents. We're in the school parking lot and they turn and I'm I think I'm turning my mind like pull the turn the wheel. You're not turning like I was in a car and you you guys were in a big SUV. Yesterday we were in a Yukon Denali X. L. So turning right there was this one place where there's a ninety degree right hander. And it's very very thin. There was not a lot of margin for error. Did Not make it easy on him. And in that instance in a car that big and that long you have to go past the turn and then get cut it as hard as it'll go and he he crushed he. He got the curb a couple times early but then he listened to his tutelage and after that crushed it. Man I GREG. Comet the commentary by you I loved at one point. You told him to stay on the right side. In America we drive on. The right. Was the verbiage that you told him told him. Because God that's the truth either he'd be a good spot. Any NASCAR driver ever needs a fill-in well no I wouldn't because I can't. I can't keep my attention that law. That's something that blows my mind about. Those spotters is they have to be so focused in so dialed in for so long that there is no possible way that I could do that. For that length of time so I admire my boys Brett Griffin Kevin. Hamlin all the guys up on that roof who keep the boys safe on Sunday afternoons. I look forward to getting back to that. I can't imagine standing VAT long and the heat and you just staring at these cars. I don't and especially places like Talladega Daytona where the margin of error is so sto thin and they're going so fast they're in such a tight pack in there so closely bunched together and you're the one that's leading the driver. No okay you have enough room to hammer it down in front of that guy at two hundred and five miles an hour and that's just a lot of pressure out. I don't know that I would do well with that pressure. And they're up there for a reason because they're the best in the world at it and they understand the dimensions of the car. They understand their drivers tendencies. They understand other drivers tendencies. They also not only in most races. Not only do they watch their own driver but they also watch the other drivers that are competitive to see what lines. They're running so that they can relay that information to their driver. Hey man the eighty eights running the third groove or the forty. Two's running up by the wall and is making a lot of. Hey so it's a heck of a position in a lot of responsibility and I really admire what those guys do again. I don't think I could do it. As we continue to navigate the corona virus pandemic and everything that comes with it. This week has been especially hard on me. It was supposed to be the. Nc Double A. Tournament men's Basketball National Championship. It was supposed to be Masters Week. And it's it's arguably the greatest week of the entire calendar year and supports Marty..

"That's Afro as we say on Martin McGee because myles Garrett also happens to be our guest. We had the opportunity to chat with miles about all kinds of different things. You guys are really going to enjoy this conversation. He has of course had quite a last several months after everything that happened with Mason Rudolph into game against the steelers. Meena kinds my esteemed colleague. Who has her own podcast on the web todd infringe network the meantime show with Linney? Is that what it's called Travis? Air FOR DOXA CO host. Yea featuring lenny with Linney and so I was not going to go there with miles but I did ask him what New Perspective he brings into two thousand twenty and he had a very interesting comment about that in everything that happened last year. So I think you guys will enjoy that That was just a very small part of a wide ranging conversation that I just enjoy enjoy thoroughly. He has done tremendous work with Chris. Long and the water boys campaign went to Tanzania. We discuss with him. What he's doing during four and teen during this unbelievable time with Cova nineteen overtaking the entire country and the entire Globe and we also discuss his time at Texas A. and M. and the influence is there and maybe the funniest moment What it was like the posed naked or the ESPN body issue for ESPN the magazine. But that's not all we're discussing today. We're also going to discuss beer. Paul and a very interesting moment. That is a right of passage for most every parent in that is taking your child driving for the first time. I took my fourteen year old son Cameron driving. For the first time I thought I would take advantage of my time. At home and take him out in the Yukon for a driving lesson. We'll get into that as well Laney and I had a virtual beer pong tournament that has now swept the nation it has become a phenomenon. Everybody saw it on my instagram story. So we'll discuss that momentarily to but before we get to miles. There's so much uncertainty going around right now and that's sweet will reduce that by giving.

"You haven't done any interviewees over the last few months. What made you want to do one today? I mean it's good timing. I'm back in the League so I feel like it's a good time for me to share now only up in doing but you know what? I'm doing to take a step forward and leave all day by last Thursday. I sat down with Browns Defensive End myles Garrett in Los Angeles one day after he was reinstated into the NFL. The interview which aired on outside. The lines was Garrett's first media parents since he was suspended by the League for swinging a helmet at steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph Rudolph initially declined to comment but after reaffirmed his claim that the quarterback called him a racial slur. Rudolph replied on twitter calling the accusation. One thousand percent false and a bold faced lie today more from our interview with Garrett including new details on who he says he told about his allegation that fateful night then Adam schefter joins the show to discuss the steelers response. And what this means for both players going forward. I mean a crime. It's Monday February Seventeenth. This is ESPN daily presented by. Adt Back to November fourteenth. You guys were up. Twenty one zero seven just seconds left in the game even suited for the first time and how long and that gets marred by idiotic play by me and a couple other guys on both teams. And there's a brawl going down inside the ten yard line and getting in there was myles Garrett and took the helmet off of Mason Rudolph along it and that David Decastro and Marquees pouncey came in and they started really laying in so it was myles. Garrett took the helmet off of Mason Rudolph and slammed him on the top of my head dunk. Oh boy miles. We're going to get one too. That'd be suspended. Oh my goodness wow luxury what happened. I mean come off the edge by ten years less than fifteen seconds. I remember that I didn't want to be on the field but now sits out there and They were throwing that ball cells going to make a play so he started the ball. He's always wanted to throw. I'm going no the administrators on. I'm not trying to do anything illegal. I should go to take them down. He says some worry that we're going down. And he ends up on top of me and he goes to twist my helmet off. So I ended up getting leveraging topping him. I grabbed his helmet and I'll start shaking them. Push them off me and I was shaking him. His helmet comes off and is now one of his offense lineman grass and I think the Castro and he's talking to me. Tell me it's cool. Notice let it go. No Senate game. It's all good. And as he's known walking me away on my left side base incomes. Run again now. He's yelling he's already kicked me to China. Twist my helmet off and made a mistake to defend myself but Day because it's left a situation entirely. There's no need for that. No no for that at all. Wow you're you're up by twenty one to seven and video that we were watching of myles Garrett taking the helmet off brutal peniche slamming him. Which pretty bad you've just described in great detail. It sounds like something you've thought about a lot a lot of time thinking about it now. Time thing about that reaction what my response should have been. 'cause I should've have and I usually have in that situation. Just wasn't there and not just reflect the myself and allowing myself to never know being the situation but if I am to to handle it better. What did he say to you? Call me the N. So when he said it kind of sparks something but I still tried to let it go still walk away once he came back. Kinda Kinda reignited this situation and now only have you know escalate things. No Pass what it needs to be no with a little time in the game left. Now you're now you're trying to know reengaged and start a fight again and no. It's definitely not entirely his fault. Stephanie both parties. Doing something that you shouldn't have been doing so. He denied that he said what you're alleging. And then after your initial appeal leaked out and you said I wish this didn't get out at all. My was because I didn't want to try to use it as justification for my actions because there is nothing to justify like there's there's nothing I can say or do to justify what I did on that day. I'm not saying there's no to justify than I didn't do anything wrong and I know what I know what happened. I know what I heard. People say things when they're heated aren't the full of emotion. I leave it on the feel. I think you can imagine or know that the racial aspect of this makes it even more polarizing toxic in some ways People didn't really want to acknowledge that because of know how I handled it immediately after and I didn't say it immediately that was there's good good luck gutter like oh come on. I've been advised against saying anything as well. I've been told not to to reach out to the media and discuss the situation at the time. Is that why you didn't mention it after the game because I think a lot of people when they heard this allegation their reaction was. Why didn't he say that immediately? I didn't oh because that would have been reaching justification at the time. Well he said this and this what happened. I wanted to take an NFL. This is what happened and no. This is all of what happened as well as the physical altercation. Part of it no a couple days later and I think the next day I've been restyled to buy a laser and he. He wanted to do an interview and he wanted to give my side. 'cause I told the coaches immediately about what happened had told a Dorsey and I told Larry. Now what what happened? What was said so they knew from that night by one of the media to to hear about it whether through Jay Glazer eventually through the aftermath of the meeting. But it didn't make it through the meeting. He was out before we even know made it out the building. The League said they didn't find evidence of racial slurs. What was your reaction.

"The clip of Mina kimes interview with myles. Garrett Cleveland Browns Defensive Lineman. He reiterates the racial slur claim against Mason Rudolph. Here so he says that during that melee back in November that Mason. Rudolph used a racial slur and here is a portion of that interview with me crimes and Myles Garrett I mean come off the edge. That didn't want to use it as justification for my actions because there's nothing to justify like there's there's nothing I can say or do just what I did on that day. "myles garrett" Discussed on The Stephen A. Smith Show

"Once you're taking. I'll have this argument with you all day long. What should should myles Garrett suspension and Ben Triple eight say? ESPN eight eight eight seven two nine three seven seven six. You can also tweet me at Jason Fitz. We'll get some more your take him but that wasn't the only news in the world is sports coming through the other thing that happened last night Zion Williamson went off. Zaim was spectacular last night. And it gives us that little chroma. Emma hope because we all know how much everybody's watching everything design does. The question is when we see those chromosome. Can he still lineup enough momentum to win the rookie of the year award. Stephen IMACS had that debate. The answer surprises me. I think he has a chance. I think he has a chance. And I'm shocked that I'm having to say that but I definitely really think that he has a chance. Here's the reason why it's the combination of these two things number one. He's already been sensation. He's averaging twenty one and seven we see them climbing the charts. But here's where it gets very very interesting Max. They've won three straight and six of their last eight there twenty three and thirty one and they're four and a half games back of the eighth see and who's the eighth seed Memphis Grizzlies. WHO's leading them? John Moran Iran and so we've been looking at John and away that he's been balling and it's been a foregone conclusion because Zairean has been out the way that that John Moran has been balding that he inevitably will win rookie of the year. But a funny thing happened just last week or a few days ago if I recall correctly NEW ORLEANS HANDLED MEMPHIS considerably easily. And so when you look at it from that perspective as they continue to climb the charts if they ultimately end up capturing that eighth that scene because Zairean is playing lights out it would have to be to some degree at the expense of Memphis. WHO's holding the eighth seed as we speak? Which means that somewhere? Along the way if John Moran falls off and Memphis as a result follow suit and they fall off and all leads. Elevate eight captors. The eighth seen with Zairean playing the way that he plays. Who the hell you think is going to vote against them? They're not gonNA vote against them for rookie of the year. So the key ear and all all of this for this particular segment is to send a message to job. Marin it is a beautiful message because we're not being negative about either them. Both of them are sensational. I've been incredibly impressed. But what I've seen from both of them and I'm proud of both of them but for the purposes of competitive fervor and basketball esta West to John Moran I don Williamson is coming so as New Orleans which do about it because you've got the ABC you understand. You GotTa Pretty Damn good team. I like what I'm I've seen from Memphis. What are you guys going to do an in particular Jama ramp? What are you going to do because John Williams and the Pelicans are coming think they look like they can make a run and it's going to take Memphis being able to hold them off and method can't do that without Jaama rampal? Well listen who am I want to say I told you so. Well yes I am told you before. He turned pro. Giama rant was a surefire NBA superstar. I thought and then everyone else John has proven me right about that and has proven many others right about that. Well said that he is. I believe you were arguing. He's not a surefire superstar. Stephen but we can go back and low seventeen set I if the tape says I'm wrong I will stand correct it. We can get the tape. No thirty I'm sure fire superstar. You can't say that based on you know jar jar Yes oh I say yes. Okay well maybe you might be right. Maybe we could check during the point is that I know what I said. The point is that you don't have to do a damn thing other news been doing orange red. He's averaging seventeen and seven. You could talk about hit a rookie wall. Except he's doing it in under thirty minutes a game. He's doing it under thirty minutes. John Amaranth is this close already to being an elite point guard elite. This man was compared to Russell Westbrook. It's Brooke coming out Cuba's aggression but I never saw just a pure westbrook comparison. I know what they meant about the aggression but he also had like the patients and rhythm of like de Ngelo Russell who westbrook meets the Angelo two opposite kaieda players. And somehow this guy is that rolled into one John Moran especial now is Ion Williamson even better yeah. He's designed waves. It is a physical freak. He was a man among boys in college and in the NBA. He's a monster store among men right when you drop thirty one and twenty eight minutes as a rookie in your diaper game. Is there a Higher League than the NBA Zion Williamson can can can challenge this dude. It's ridiculous but Stephen People get suckered by the all-star break like it's the midway point only thirty games left. There's there's not enough season left. If he were twice as good as John Moran Okay but he's not he's better than those things twice as good as Jami rant. He's not gonNA catch him. There's just not enough time to much of the season went by well. That's what I'm saying to you Max is this. Here's where I think you're Paul. It is enough season if they catch Memphis. Because what I'm trying to say to you this if John Rant was in the eastern conference right then that's a different ballgame all game. He Ain't catching John Moran. Here's the problem. They're both in the same conference and they're both battling for the same thing. So if Zion and the PELICANS elevate themselves and they catch Memphis and not myth this out of the picture there four and a half games back they were more than that you know two or three games ago if they end up catching memphis and for some reason and I don't believe this will happen but of John Moran Falls Falls off and Memphis falls off as a result and Zaire continues to send and the Pelicans with the remember. Jj redick she would forty three forty six percent from three point range. You Got Catholic Brandon. Ingram he's All Star averaging twenty five a game you got drew holiday. What he did the other day he made? daime look Human Damian Lillard only about twenty twenty one poets for crying out loud. You Still Got Josh Heart. And and and and and all these boys all I'm saying Lonzo ball in them. I'm I'm saying to you if the PELICANS continue to ascend with Zion I hear you. There's this sense that will make a difference. Vogue make that will put Zeon number two in the rookie of the year. But John Rent who she wants. Fifty percent from the field and thirty eight percent from three. Who when you talk about Joe? Shooting Percentage Stephen Eighth fivethirtyeight had this. And you look at the number of guys with his usage rate. Who are that efficient offensively? It's it's guys like the Greek freak. They're like six seven other Luca six seven on the players in the league. Doing what Josh Doing Hansel of the MVP candidates. So I hear what you're saying John Moran was was not as good as he is. You'd be right. ca-catch a lesser cap but this lesser cat. And he's real the participant your Haraz. Max's forgetting something Roz. I did say somebody that comes the NBA. You might be forgetting something as well. We religiously we just talk about those young players hitting a wall job. Iran has been playing season. Zion has not twenty nine. What if John Moran were to hit a wall right so steven we understand what you're saying? All the right you know the race for the eighth seed might be a good indicator of what what these rookies are going if you will for the rookie of the year but another way we often compare people in the MVP race. We say we compare. They're supporting cast. And there are teams so so these two rookies has a stronger. Supporting cast and team Jammeh ran on. What you know is off? Offer me to say because the Pelicans Look Different With Zion you know when we watched them. They were struggling early in the year but ultimately again in Zion has been there. They won six of their last eight games. I'm just looking at Zay. On with Riddick with Brandon. Ingram knows boys. The coaching of Alvin. Alvin Gentry I appreciate the call. Tell Jacobs the job that they're doing in Memphis. I really really do. And maybe I need to spend more pay more attention to some of their players. Because I know they've got some talent but right now I had to just look at it. I would say New Orleans. We can't just look at where these teams are now and where they're headed. We also have to look where they were expected to be at the beginning of the year. Let's remember if you look back according to one prominent Vegas site. The PELICANS were expected to win the over under the beginning of the season. Thirty nine games. They've won twenty three the expectation for Memphis coming into the season in twenty seven and a half. They've already won twenty seven games. John has already gotten Memphis to the number of wins at Vegas projected for the entire season. That's rookie of the year stuff. The NBA is on ESPN radio tune in tonight than the nuggets host. Lebron and the Lakers presented by indeed coverage begins at nine thirty PM eastern on most. ESPN radio stations. I want your thoughts. What should myles Garrett suspension have been triple eight seven to nine three seven seven six? You can also tweet me at Jason Fitz. We'll get some of your take in coming up. Plus did a win over the clippers last night. I mean it just a significant win for the clippers last night did it restore your confidence in the seventy sixers. You might be surprised with the panel. Had to say you'll hear that but first I when it comes to hiring. You don't have time to waste. You need to get to your shortlist qualified candidates fast. Browns' Garrett reinstated after helmet-hit suspension

"The NFL has reinstated Browns defensive end myles Garrett You may remember. Garrett was suspended indefinitely after ripping someone's helmet off and hitting him in the head with it was that wrong shouldn't have done that. Visit frowned upon Danza. Yes This was on Thursday football back in November so this suspension ended up really being six games. that why that's what my question was going to be to you. Is that enough of a punishment for on national television ripping a quarterback's helmet often hitting him over the head with it. I think more punishment would have been making play. Wait for the browns. The rest of the year so Yeah finally like it was. It was bad yes embarrassing yes. Was He punished. Yes we over yes. I'm getting there also is. I mean I'm surprised. They may be ruled so quickly could have waited until June to renew. There's nothing really going on right now but by the Thai comes back right now I mean look the the only reason I would hold that suspension to be longer now is I believe he made up the racist thing and I would punishing more right I would. I would be but that would be an additional because what you don't know that I don't but like you don't mention it immediately afterwards to anybody you you had the microphone in your hand and all you had to say was look. I'm not gonNA say what he said but he said something that set me off. None of that was mentioned so I would have been okay with an additional suspension. Because that I believe he made it up. I believe he made it up. There are play other men around and only he was the only heard. It didn't mention it until a couple of weeks later when he was going before the. The Commissioner's office trying to get out of it. He claimed he went racial that one I would have held the suspension the greater but six games like whatever for whatever reason. It's okay to make up that that. Why do a racist just just just note K one? You can't take those things back that you said to I. I know that social media wants to believe that there's this high level of white racists out there there's not we are ridding them slowly slowly from the earth or at least from America much. It's like we're ridding ourselves of people who say Washington instead of Washington

"We want your take on the Shell Pennzoil performance on what I want to know what should myles is Garrett suspension and then we've also got it out on twitter. You can comment there at Jason Fitz Hashtag I take you can call me triple eight say. ESPN eight seven nine. Three seven seven six to get it right. Was it too long. Was it too short. I wonder whatever you think. On what should myles Garrett suspension have been in the meantime with that being the breaking news. ESPN NFL analyst analysts. keyshawn Johnson was on with maxine Steven A. and they broke down the breaking news at Myles. Garrett is now back in the NFL. I felt that he should have been suspended at least for the rest of the regular season which was I told you that because I had spoken to the NFL and play association. That more than I said he's done for the season eight coming back back. That was automatic. But I would tell you why disagree with his reinstatement. I think he should have been suspended least for the season opener. Why because 'cause you were suspended for the last six games you go into the off season and then everybody get what I'm saying to you? Is there guess what you start off the season Maoz. How's Garrett is not on that football field? Why is he not on that football field because of the footage that we're watching right now? They were up. They had the game well in hand. They will winning winning that game. Twenty one zero seven. It was the very last play of the game. You didn't have to throw him to the ground the way that you did. I did that was wide Mason. Rudolph grabbed at him the way they did it. And I'm not excusing Mason Rudolph. Because obviously he played the role he should have been punished as well. But the point that I'm trying to make to you is that what was he doing. He was reacted to the fact that it's twenty one. Seven is the very very last play of the game. You didn't have to grab me and throw me to the damn ground like that. Then myles Garrett not only yanks his helmet off but was two steelers in his face. He literally swings the Helmet Mason. Rudolph Helmet at his head. You could sit up to say nothing happened my responses. What would we have been saying if he had cracked Mason Rudolph Ed Wide Open if you're the NFL a European say sending a message as a deterrent? I say you don't sit up there and let the season start with an entirely clean slate at least one more gain the season opener where you're reminding everybody. This is why he's gone the rest. y'All think about doing something like that. That's all all I'm saying that's it. What think you know what he got? He got basically the suspension last year. He paid the price okay. I don't think you carry read into this year. It's over and done with you. Say remind the players. Well you're gonNA run this stuff when the seasons start on every network they're gonNA see when the browns play play the steelers. They're going to show it so you're going to be reminding players of the behavior that took place now as far as placing blame. Obviously we've talked about it since the the incident took place. There's no way he's supposed to take that helmet off in sweet nobody. Regardless if lion are restraining you the lyman would have never tackled. Doc Id you to the ground and starts swinging. Oh you had. You not swung your helmet. They would just pushing you out of the way trying to get between you and their quarterback now myles Garrett. He did what we needed to do what he felt like he needed to do. I'm sure he said sorry. He looked the commissioner. Is You said it'll never happen again. And this is why reinstated now. I'm looking forward to him getting on the field in helping the Cleveland browns. Finally Damn Games guys. How much does this affect? How you regard Myles Garrett or you willing to move on now that he served his I've seen caroline? I'm moving on. I'm not GONNA sit. Sit there and hold this over his head. He's a hell of a player but I've seen them do other dirty things in the past I think myles Garrett the guy who's impulses can get the better of him at times. I'm the one that defending him here you know. I just think that match all type of players do dirty man they pinch you step. But I've seen grab your friends of the some dude. You look at a little bit side when when you see this position is a position he plays. He plays a very aggressive position. Put it this way throughout this whole thing I under. I appreciate Stephen as comment. I think it's an interesting idea that you would have suspended him for the first game just to keep it. It's not it's not the behavior. It's the punishment Steven wants to show people and not to put burgeon mouse. DVD Him for the rest of the League right. And I appreciate that and as much as you can't be swing your helmet at a at a guy without a helmet even though the rules if you swing your helmet you rejected is. It's already in the rules but at a guy without a helmet on I get it. I still come back to the fact that if I'm in a if I pick a fight in a bar with a bigger guy and I and then I and then after that I pick a fight then introduced like a bottle I swing it and if I end up getting hit with a bottle but that guys like at a certain point to certain point. You've got to be responsible for your behavior. Now Max Max Max is what I think give missing. What you're missing is the fact that first of all myles Garrett is the defensive line and got that has to do by about fifty pounds secondly he was on top of the do therapy? He's the one that ripped the dudes helmet off fourth. When he was being pushed back it was to offense of Lyman in between him pushing him back so mason? Rudolph was not a threat to him and last but not least understand that. This is a very important point football. You have a license. Two assault people particularly playing certain positions for you to sit up and go to extra mile to try to do something is what makes it more grease like damn have you been knocked. You spent the day spent that Thursday night game knocking Mason. Rudolph offside his head all night long the fight with math. I'm not I mean we did this at the time we can do it again. AD nauseam right now but the fact is it was it was mason. Rudolph introduced the idea of trying to take off the helmet. He was just unsuccessful. Much like through the play of the game myles Garrett was successful and if he if he took off that he'll go max he wouldn't go swing that Hillman it miles gear and I don't think myles Garrett was planning that either except while the Lineman were pushing him back Mason Rudolph is charging them. It's not may off was fake charge you know like they do in the NBA. Ah then want her their hands. That's what he was doing. He wasn't getting ready attack. No miles okay. You may say that should have been myles. Garrett Judge Goh myles Garrett is real mad.

"The NFL surprising awesome has made a reinstatement of the browns myles Garrett from his suspension. Let's remember. He was suspended in November after ripping the helmet off of Mason Rudolph and hitting the steelers quarterback ACA swinging it at his head. He was suspended on. "Was described to me last week. Shortly after the incident came down and the suspensions were handed out that myles Garrett would not play football well again. I think people were looking for the clarity on the word indefinitely but the NFL is not in any rush to give any clarity on the word indefinitely. They're just worried about myles Garrett not playing again this season and then addressing that issue after the season as Markey's Pouncey I think the NFL felt like he had a chance to think about his actions on that particular play and that was why it suspended him three games. Because you'll notice that other players like like David Castro refrained from punching another player whereas marquees penalty jumped into that fray and through punches after running for a good bit of distance. There and the League felt like more keys. POUNCEY could've changed one but again. People applauded Marquees Pouncey for defending his quarterback for going after the opposition. For making sure that. Nobody's going to treat his teammate. The way that myles Garrett treated Mason Rudolph and I think that the NFL handed out the three game suspension reduced it to that also means that marquees patchy will not be able to play in the anticipated rematch between the steelers and the browns one week from Sunday when the two teams meet again in Pittsburgh in what should be a very interesting matchup pouncing. Now will miss that game. We knew that myles Garrett was going to miss that game that was never in question and I don't think there was any realistic chance no matter what. The appeal transpired during that appeal. I don't think myles Garrett ever was going to have his suspension reduced this season. I think he wants to defend his character. He wanted to stay to the NFL. So the League would have further substance to think about going forward. When it decides how much indefinite is but myles Garrett was never going to have his suspension reduced? This season Marquees pouncey went from three to two and we should mention that yesterday Larry Jobe had suspension of health. So he will miss this weekend's game against the Miami Dolphins so in total ogan job. He's won game two games and Myles Garrett remains indefinitely suspended. And let me ask you this whether it be from information you have or simply your vast experience covering this league but do you believe the NFL will move forward investigating the claim by Mouth Garrett even though it clearly has no bearing in on his ultimate suspension. It should be simple enough to investigate. Why would the league investigated when again? It remains firm. Minute stands that myles. Garrett isn't playing football again does it change Myles Garrett Act at all does it. Excuse it if Mason Rudolph did say that does it. Change change anything in the equation. It would be inexcusable and unacceptable for Mason Rudolph to use language like that if he did as Myles Garrett is accusing losing him of during the appeal. It's interesting in the tweets that we've seen out of Cleveland and Pittsburgh since the report first aired when. NFL Live began at one thirty thirty that there hasn't been a player who's corroborated that from that particular day saying that this is something that they heard during the game. Now maybe they just didn't know and it was set set at the bottom of a pile. But you know what the. NFL also has microphones on a lot of different players. And they usually have quarterbacks Mike maybe somebody might up that day they could hear but even what if they did. What is the league? Then do the lead have evidence and maybe you could take disciplinary action against me. If it's true notice over hypotheticals. We're talking about here. Wendy there are so many hypotheticals. We don't know what is real. And that's to the League to figure out the League likes to be in the investigative business. It's got another matter now to investigate at the gate and we'll see what it comes up with so many layers Adam. Thank you On this busy afternoon take a look at some of the longest suspensions in NFL. These are clearly defined though as suspensions for incidents that take place on the field two thousand Nineteen Vantera perfect with twelve games remained at the top of the list. But it's multiple right multiple infractions. Also though Myles Garrett stands at six because that's all we know right now it could very well be more within six years so That's where we are and again. The assertion made during the hearing on Wednesday that there was a racial slur used by Mason Rudolph off the League. Joe Sinnott moved rather quickly. which was the expectation prior to today to make a ruling on that appeal and the indefinite suspension for myles Garrett? We'll stand well listen. The appeal is an opportunity for a player to get off their chest. What they feel is their perspective and to offer their testimony? Mason Rudolph also had the same opportunity as Larry Jobe. And what have you. That's what it's for. I do think that obviously we see that. The Leagues or James James thrashes decision was not to have it make any bearing on the ultimate decision. I do think it's important for the NFL to establish a tone on that you know a racial slur Regardless in any situation is not something that is tolerated Some you know some people Bogan fine Racial slurs actionable or everyone has their own filter as to how you know they take do think that that needs to be established regardless and and either way miles Derek. Got His opportunity to say what it is that he said because it and I know during the conversation we've been considering hypotheticals right. What what if you can prove it? What if you can't what have you? If if if if he did not say that. Being Mason Rudolph then what's the opposite. Opposite of. What that contention is that Myles Garrett is lying so you know there and he wanted to say what he wanted to say based on what is his character and explain what he asli he did? That in the Appeals Mason. Rudolph has the ability to say that that didn't happen. He is saying that didn't happen. He's vehemently denied. He has every right to say that ultimately I think everybody agrees based on what we've heard from the analysis perspective on our on on our air that it should not have still..

"Due diligence and figuring out if in fact he did say this racial slur and how they're gonna you know what the consequences are from. That and this is why I was saying that you know when you're asking each side what happens you do have to respect. There are truths and that being said that also applies to Mason Rudolph who is vehemently denying that so they have to take that into account as the other side is a principal support in this incident which is myles Garrett who was saying that it did happen and that is their separate truce and then as investigations you go about trying to figure figure out if you can prove it independently and even if not. It doesn't take away that it's each of their sides testimony as to what happened. And and what we also know that video that cannot be stricken which is the extreme result of the helmet hitting Mason Rudolph's head right there as we see on on the Dan which which we all know is unfortunate and myles Garrett has expressed his apology for that and also expressed extreme contrition as told in the appeal hearing for that as well. Well Georgia's right. I mean there's only one sort of inexplicably indisputable fact and that's that's what we saw. The rest will will take a lot of unraveling rob. We'll hear more from you coming up continuing to follow a developing story this afternoon in his appellate hearing to the League on Wednesday myles Garrett as part of his defense in hopes of reducing his suspension. Alleges that Mason Rudolph used a racial slur prior to this ugly incident we saw on the field last Thursday Thursday night Mason Rudolph for his part and via a statement from the Pittsburgh. steelers has vehemently denied this statement. Reads Mason vehemently denies. Nice the report of being accused of using a racial slur during the incident Thursday night. In Cleveland steelers spokesman Lawton said on Thursday. He will not discuss this accusation. Who's Asian any further and his focus remains on preparation for Sunday's game against the Cincinnati bengals prior to this report Mason? Rudolph was scheduled to address the media. This afternoon he will not Deuce Joe he did speak yesterday But first let me show you the statement from his attorney who's also denying this according to ESPN and his appeal myles Garrett falsely asserted that Mason Rudolph uttered a racial slur toward him prior to swinging a helmet Mason's uncovered head in a desperate attempt to mitigate his suspension. This is a lie. This false allegation was never asserted by Garrett in the aftermath of the game never suggested prior to the hearing and conspicuously absent in the apology published by the browns and adopted by Garret. The militias use of this wild and unfounded allegation in assault on Mason's integrity which is far worse than the physical assault witnessed on Thursday. This is reckless and shameful. We will have no further comment Cam Hayward Def- did have a comment and here's what he had to say a short short time ago label for says it's not a serious very serious offer brotherhood mislead. We always drink to sleep. He's never taken conflicts of interest worse than putting our game but to use that. As as long as your appeal. That's okay no one action doesn't deserve another. I know missing. Basic came to me and told Ryan Clark joins us now with additional perspective. Ryan I have underscored this all afternoon. This is what Myles Garrett says what happened it is what Mason Rudolph says did not happen. That is what we know. Does it change anything at all for you know. I don't necessarily think it changes the the facts of what we saw now. Would it change how I feel or how I view Maoz Garrett's rates absolutely But to say that you can look at this from either perspective because it's going to be mouse's word against Mason's word to say that you can look at this from either perspective and say the justifiable Garrett Hitting Mason roofing the head Mason Rudolph in the head with the helmet. You won't be able to do that. What I can say from the lawyers? Oh yours point of view when he saying that. This wasn't anything that was heard before this was never used by myles Garrett at least publicly. I can't say that I heard heard of it before today before this situation so to say that this was just concocted in the appeal situation or in the appeals hearing that will be defoe's from the perspective of this isn't something that myles Garrett new myles Garrett heard or Maoz Garrett felt coming into the hearing today Ryan how should this factor into the ultimate conclusion by the League. I don't necessarily think it should factor at all because I don't believe that this is something I think they're going to be able to get one hundred percent proof of. I think they'll be people in those meetings. Who are African American who have dealt with word who have dealt with this racial shirts or slur that will empathize? That will say if this was said. I can see the reaction being X.. Swab or Z.. or I could see the reaction ratchet or the situation escalating to what it did but I think the thing is. You're never going to be able to prove that. Mason Rudolph if has already come out and say it and his lawyer double down that. This isn't something that he say. This is something that he's done so there's not going to be one hundred percent proof that it was said and I don't I don't even know then if there will be enough people in the room that understand the word enough that understanding the feeling understand the feeling that you get when called something like this is that would warrant a reaction like we've seen from myles Garrett so I think they will still look at the facts look at what they know and what they know is there was something that transpired inspired on the field that ended by Maoz Garrett Hidden Mason Rudolph in the head with the hill so Ryan what do you do what do you do. If you're the league what do you do here Myles Garrett what what do you do if you're mason. Rudolph moving forward. Let's be honest like we could be honest about this. I don't think a lot of people care if Mason Rudolph said it it or not We've seen situations like this with Riley Cooper where we know the word was used for fact and he got to play in the league. He came right back and nothing else was really said about it. Moving forward Mason Rudolph is going to have to answer to people in his locker room more than anyone. We heard Cam Hayward say he already went to him to tell him that he didn't use the word I think that's going to be the biggest thing for him and for his reputation. And if you pay attention enough social media and you listened enough there there have been things circulating about Mason Rudolph and Oh tweets Mason Rudolph and certain affiliations. So that's going to be something that he has to answer to because there it was already a narrative previous to this but far as the rest of this is how he plays with the League. How this will factor in to myles Garrett? I don't think it does I think malls garrod is still going to have to answer for doing something that is unacceptable doing something that he should not have no matter what the cause of it was so going forward you hope as the lead see. This isn't a black eye as you move forward as far as how players do with each other and they don't see this type of incident again Ryan this new information notwithstanding and given what we knew when we spoke on on Monday or Tuesday. Were you comfortable with the initial punishment levied which was an indefinite suspension attention. I was called the with it because I kind of felt like already knew that this was going to be something that looked this way. I knew the League would have after be swift. I knew they would have to be harsh. New would have to be unprecedented. This is not the worst thing I've ever seen happen in football. I don't think it's the worst thing we've seen can happen in the football game. I believe album hanes worth stumping on. Andre Gerard was a worse situation but I know the climate. We're in with understanding so I expected this from from the League. I don't expect them to back off either. I expect that Myles Garrett will play next year. I'm not sure when he will be required to do some things to get to that point there will be some healing that needs to go on within the League also publicly. But I'm cool. What they did? I understand the way that things were levied on myles Garrett also believed that Mesa Rav has to take more responsibility on more. Responsibility should be put on him for being the attacker for being the aggressor. But you know the way that they saw the way they will myles Garrett. Did I understand the league having to make an example of him so this doesn't happen moving forward the Ryen again. We appreciate you joining us on this Thursday afternoon. We will see you soon this now from our ESPN steelers reporter. Brooke Prior Mason Rudolph was scheduled scheduled to speak today but is not doing post practice interviews. "Vocabulary being used on the football field if it was said given the fact that there are other players that were around around in the vicinity again. If this was sent someone had to hear this so now the weren't. NFL has their work cut out for him to really get to the bottom of this because really this is one man's word against another and it's an even goes it goes beyond that this is not just one man saying something mildly inappropriate to another or the accusation of one man sign and something inappropriate to another. This is explosive. So they're going to need to get to the bottom of this and determine what exactly is the truth because you can never ever ever condone the use of a racial slur in any forum let alone on the Football Football Field Lewis. It is a difficult situation though. Because to your previous point it is one man versus another both have an extremely different view of what actually took place. I mean what what do you do. Ultimately if there is no physical or audio proof if it simply simply he said versus he said Yeah. That's that's a tough one. Wendy I mean I don't I don't really know how now given how this situation so you know I don't know how you really how you come to grips with that in terms of lesson miles suspension do you suspend Mason Rudolph. I mean you're you're you're kind of like in the realm of no-man's-land as far as who do you believe more I mean you have the in the absence of proofs I I mean you just be handing out justice based upon what. Maybe you think happened or who do you believe more in the situation of medicine. That's a terrible situation to be in in but nevertheless it does not lessen the explosiveness of these accusations because you have to do everything in your power to figure out what exactly happened here because this is something that you just can't brush under the rug and say it's one lands word against another. You have to do everything in your power to figure out if this is in fact what said as if it was it opens up a whole new can of worms so to speak. You're right Louis Layer situation and certainly a difficult one for the NFL and really everybody involved. We thank you for joining us on such short notice. We do have a game tonight as I mentioned before and we'll turn our attention now to Thursday night. Football Jacoby percent likes twain the Texans. He's one of five quarterbacks to win their first four career starts against Houston however he will be without Marlin Mac tonight. He's out with a broken hand. And Max Eight hundred sixty. Two Russian guards are fits most in the NFL first places on the line tonight the winner of this game. We'll have a seventy four percent chance to claim the AFC style that is according to our football power index. Here is the head coach. The first year played six games was injured. Played a full season last year. He's only really into his. What third season but really? It's two and a half seasons. I mean he's. He's got a lot of football left in his career. He's played a lot of football thing that he does is. He really has a good memory bank so he he he can understand what's happened and he's not a repeat error. He doesn't make the same mistake twice but he still seeing things that are new and so you know in his career so I think he does a great job of trying to Working hard to correct things and that's what great players do and that's what he is at worker is in Houston and joins us now with more Ed back when he as you know Shawn Watson had four days to recover mentally and physically from the worst defeat of his NFL career and he told us he turned the page immediately just as he would have done had. The Texans won the game against the Ravens that game by the way the third this season in which he failed to throw a touchdown pass in those three games. Two of them losses watson optimal sack the total of Sixteen Times head coach Bill. O'Brien pulled him on the final series to protect him from suffering additional punishment when we spoke yesterday. O'Brien told me that Watson is banged up just like everybody else but he said he can run and you can cut. He's okay. O'Brien said O'Brien also told me that point of emphasis with his quarterback for tonight's game against the colts make good quick decisions. Don't hold onto the ball. O'Brien said just get back to playing good discipline football which he's done for ninety percent of the season. When did he said his quarterback has to get back to that? Thank you in week. Seven when these two teams met before Kobe. Perset was the best quarterback back on the field. He completed sixty seven percent of his passes through a career. High Four touchdowns on the flip side to Shawn Watson had his second game in a row with two interceptions. Which brings us to this rob? I know you believe and it's probably a pretty good argument that this game won't come down to the two. quarterbacks watched film on that first game what did you say yeah. It's going to come down and turnover differential in when I'm watching this game. I'm going to break down something for you. These are the two turnovers by Shawn Watson and that's the difference. Princeton game look red zone scoring well. The Texans were not able to score in the red zone. If you can't score the red zone it's tough to win. It's going to come down and turnovers so whoever could win that turnover turnover battle. They have a high chance of winning this. Well we'll we'll help that. At least in terms of the Texas is protecting the quarterback now it was a visible to start the season and then I understand for Houston. It got a little a bit better but they really do have to do as much as they possibly can to keep the Shawn Watson Upright. That's the name of the game for the Texans especially offensive. They have to do everything in their power. Our to keep the Shawn Watson Upright and able to stand in that pocket and deliver the ball downfield. Now's well as the Shawn Watson runs and his and his very very capable as a runner. He's a pass first quarterback. He likes to get the ball to his playmakers in a position for them to make plays and when he does that. This team is successful. When he's running around for his dear life in that Backfield Isla Baltimore Ravens they do not have that same level of success offensively so bill? O'Brien has to figure out a way to maintain his quarterback upright and maintain that pressure off of him off of that offensive line. Because that's the only way they're going to have a chance to win. And it's not just keeping Shawn Watson and upright it's also how that defense is going to perform especially in the absence of. Jj Watt right now. I think they're second in pass rush win rates. Jj Watt has been out before that they were in the middle of the pack back. Also they're going up against a quarterback who is excelling especially when he's been healthy with play action. I believe he has six touchdowns versus zero interceptions with the play action of going up against another mobile quarterback quarterback. That's something to watch for. And not only that. But they're also coming off of where they gave up their most points in the season. Obviously being Lamar Jackson in those guys but but I didn't see that coming yeah but luckily for them. MARLA MAC is not playing and they're going to have to deal with the situation where they're splitting time with the running backs as well all right. We will talk much more about this game game. I said we take a look at the modell gold standard stat. I mentioned this before. Jacoby perset has owned the Texans in his career. He's gone four no seven touchdowns and no interceptions against all other teams seven fifteen with a quarterback rating of forty three both statement saving. Money me with GEICO's almost better than watching football. Think about it when you're watching the game yelling at the quarterback to throw the ball throw it Williams's wide open. Why are you doing this to me? Use that at rocket arm. Come on. They don't listen to you but if you went into a GEICO office and yelled someone please help me save some money on car insurance. Everyone would hop to it except the intern turn because it's his first day and he doesn't even have a computer yet. See better switch and save with GEICO. It's almost better than sports. Welcome back to NFL lot. We continue to follow a developing story this afternoon. myles Garrett had his appeal heard by the League on Wednesday. He has been suspended indefinitely in that appellate hearing. He's alleging Josephina that racial slur was used. Yeah myles Garrett had has opportunity to give his perspective before the League Wednesday yesterday in New York and as part of that defense offense He said to the NFL representatives in that meeting that Mason Rudolph used a racial slur towards him during the incident. Now we know that Mason. Rudolph is vehemently denying. This also want to add in this. That after the incident didn't in the Locker Room Miles Gary was asked if anything was said to him That helped to spark this incident and at that time I'll go to actually said no comment thereafter. I believe Mason Rudolph was asked about something similar in in his own way said that a words were exchanged per what has been quoted in other reports. I just wanted to also add that to our conversation. It is important context and to your point in fact Mason is denying this. This is is a statement coming from the steelers Mason vehemently denies the report of being accused of using a racial slur during the incident. Thursday night. In Cleveland spokesman Bert Lawton and said on Thursday he will not discuss any accusation. Any further and his focus remains on preparation for Sunday's game against the Cincinnati Bengals. There has also in a statement from Mason Rudolph Attorney according to ESPN and his appeal myles. Garrett falsely asserted that Mason Rudolph uttered a racial slur tord him prior to swinging a helmet at Mason's uncovered head in a desperate attempt to mitigate his suspension. This is a lie. This false allegation was never asserted sorted by Garrett in the aftermath of the game never suggested prior to the hearing and conspicuously absent in the policy published by the browns and adopted by Garrett malicious bliss. Houston this wild unfounded. Allegation is an assault and masons integrity which is far worse than the physical assault witnessed on Thursday. This is reckless and shameful. We will have no further comment. I should add that. This story first reported by Josina Anderson and our Adam Schefter and Adam joins us now with additional information Adam one of these explosive charge for myles Garrett that came to light during his appeal hearing on Wednesday in front of the jointly. Appointed appeals off through James Aims. Thrash in his Josefina knows well James Thrash sat there very stoic taking copious notes according to Josefina and basically was taking in everything that was being being alleged at that point in time now at least the NFL with a whole other issue on its hands to sift through and sort out to figure out what did and didn't happen and these are explosive. Charges that Mason Rudolph now will have to address. The steelers are practicing as we speak. They're scheduled to be off the field at two PM Mason. Rudolph was scheduled scheduled to speak to reporters today. We do not know whether he still will do that. Will Not do that will not answer questions about these charges for myles Garrett but it adds one one more dimension and one more layer to a story that already was very complex and very complicated and makes it that much more messy in this particular particular case the events of last Thursday night continue to live on and look like they will continue to live on beyond just that night and they will again affect picked these men's reputations legacies going forward as people try to figure out what is and isn't real. There's no question Adam thank you and as you might imagine. The browns have been asked about this today as well. Here's head coach. Freddie kitchen is just a short time ago long on whose especially donor since the loom? That happened afterwards. Nothing congressional in his responses. I can't really comment on respect.

"With some breaking information there is additional information on me myles Garrett Mason Rudolph incident that occurred last Thursday and Thursday night football and Josefina. I'll ask you right now just to add what we learned today. Yeah sources telling me and Adam Schefter that myles Garrett made as part of his defense during the appeal hearing yesterday Per what he included in his defense that Mason Rudolph allegedly used a racial slur during the incident. Thursday night. Football as we're watching right here last last week and that he wanted to have this as part of the context as far as what her you know what happened and and that it created a argumentative exchange range during the appeal myles. Garrett had an opportunity to speak at the beginning of the appeal and also at the end. It's also my understanding that hearing officer James Thrash asked him if T- were to have something like this happen again. How we handle it differently? Hypothetically and Mas Garrett said that he wouldn't want this to escalate in this way and given the opportunity he would have tried to walk away. So we're still waiting for the decision for James Strache into basically figure out how this impacts if at all you know the decision from the hearing hearing officer with regards to the length of the suspension which right now is at an indefinite link. Good thank you for adding not myles. Garrett has been suspended indefinitely at the very least the rest of this regular regular Susan. Here is the response of the Pittsburgh steelers mason that is of course. Mason Rudolph vehemently denies the report of being accused of using a racial slur during the incident. Thursday night in Cleveland. St They're spokesman Bert Lawton said on Thursday. He will not discuss this accusation any further and his focus remains on preparation for Sunday's game game against the bengals. We're joined now by Adam schefter again Josefina and Adam reporting this story and Adam again additional information the accusation and the use of a racial slur. Well Wendy let me read to you. If you don't mind a statement that just came in moments ago from Mason Rudolph Attorney Timothy Younger because I feel like this is an important part of the story to get out there right now I'm just calling it up right now. We're getting into this as it's breaking here basically basically he says according to ESPN is appeal. myles Garrett myles Garrett falsely asserted that Mason Rudolph utter a racial slur towards him prior to swing a helmet of Mason's uncovered head in a desperate attempt to mitigate a suspension. This is a lie. This false allegation was never asserted by Garrett in the aftermath method game never suggested prior to the hearing and conspicuously absent in the apology published by the browns and adopted by Garrett then malicious use of this wild and unfounded unfounded. Allegation is an assault on Mason's integrity which is far worse than the physical assault witnessed on Thursday. This is reckless shameful. We will have no further comment that is from Timothy Younger. The attorney for Mason Rudolph when he heard of the allegations here this afternoon. Now the Pittsburgh steelers are out on the practice practice field as we speak and Mason Rudolph was scheduled to speak to the media following the practice session. We'll see whether or not he still does. But obviously we've you've got two versions of the events that have now unfolded at the. NFL appeal for myles Garrett indefinite suspension. We've got myles Garrett alleging that Mason Rudolph said something to him a racial slur that preceded that fight on Thursday night and we have Mason Rudolph strongly deny at least as attorney strongly strongly denying it and ruby up to the NFL to sort through this to determine what is real and what is not Adam Schefter. Thank you again to your point. The steelers have also released a statement saying that Mason denies any use of a racial slur. He did addressed media yesterday. Adam report he would have spoken again today. It appears unlikely. But here is what Mason Rudolph said yesterday definitely didn't say anything escalated it but like I said I do a better job. Keep my composure. And those situations uh-huh unfortunate situation for teams love again. The Information Shen this after noon is that during his defenses appellate hearing myles Garrett alleging Mason Rudolph used a racial slur that precipitated. What happened in that incident Thursday night? Let me just ask it. Simply if that is the case does it change in your mind anything that transpired after the fact no I still think regardless of what was said to you or regardless of you know what said racial slur was said. You still have to conduct yourself in a way that is conducive to others. Yes and not swinging a helmet isn't the way you combat that right swinging a helmet in the heat of the battle isn't the way you combat someone giving you a racial slur in that moment now how I can see where he would take it to that measure. I can understand that but this is the right thing to do. No so it's unfortunate. Obviously that that you know were here at this point in this in in this whole scenario are feels like it's just dragging on and on and on now But if there's racial so did occur. It's tough because there's one wins word against another. There's nobody else that's confirming coming. This is just someone saying it and it's just tough to kind of wrap your mind around all of this because of everything that's transpired up until this point would vick was saying the swinging over helmet and hitting somebody else in the head with that. I think that's where the the biggest issue was in the big shock factor that everyone saw that night. was somebody getting hit with a helmet right right if the helmet was never swung. There isn't the suspension for the rest of the season. I think that's it's pretty simple. So the whole racial thing yes. That's it's a very serious allegation and it's a serious thing thing but at the end of the day it's swinging a helmet at the violence of that is the reason that that he is suspended for length of time that he's suspended for for and just to be clear here one more time. The facts are simply these myles. Garrett has alleged that Mason Rudolph used a racial Slur Mason Rudolph via the steelers and his representation tation has vehemently denied that. And that's really where we stand myles. Garrett has been suspended indefinitely the very least the remainder of the regular season we. I do not know yet the outcome of that appellate hearing and. That's not the only thing that was stated you guys talked about yesterday. The precedent that was mentioned with regards to the Antonio Smith with Vincent with Richie Incognito at instance. You know being different when you're talking about distinguishing whether helmet hit someone on the head and in one incident where that did not happen now when I was talking to sources last night about this trying to say you know well if it's not a complete apples to apples comparison you know. How do you necessarily bring that up? As part of Malls Garrett's defense offense and I was told well players have an expectation for somewhat similar disciplined with regards to somewhat similar instances in my retort back was I could see how the NFL would come back and say well especially now that we're in the age of the NFL putting an emphasis on ahead being hit that they could make that distinction in that. There is where the difference is now with regards to your question to you. Know them and you know how does that. Add to the context of the situation. Obviously Fli myles Garrett should never have used a helmet on Mason Rudolph had that said any racial slur in and of itself is also important and is it's not something that should be tolerated in any workplace during any scenario as well. Well we will continue to follow this again Anderson. Adam schefter reporting that as part of his his defense and his appellate hearing myles Garrett is alleging that Mason Rudolph used a racial slur prior to the incident. That occurred Thursday night. We will have much more on this to come. Ah We continue. NFL live this afternoon with a developing story myles Garrett now afforded by Jesse Anderson and Adam schefter during his appellate. Elliot hearing Wednesday in New York has alleged that Mason Rudolph Houston Apparent Racial Slur prior to this incident and incident that ultimately led ed him to an indefinite suspension. At the very least the rest of the remaining regular season here is a statement via the Pittsburgh steelers Mason not to Mason Rudolph vehemently denies the report of being accused of using a racial slur during the incident Thursday. Night in Cleveland. STEELERS spokesman Bert Lawton's dead on on Thursday. He will not discuss this accusation. Any further and his focus remains on preparation for Sunday's game against the Cincinnati Bengals in addition Rudolph's attorney. It has released this statement according to ESPN in his appeal myles Garrett falsely asserted that Mason Rudolph uttered a racial slur towards him prior to swinging winging a helmet at Mason uncovered head in a desperate attempt to mitigate his suspension. This is a lie. This false allegation was never asserted by Garrett and the aftermath of the game never suggested prior to hearing and conspicuously absent in the apology published by the browns and adopted by the militias. Use of this wild and unfounded allegation nation is an assault on Mason's integrity which is for far worse than the physical assault witnessed on Thursday. This is reckless and shameful. We will have no further comment. We are joined now by ESPN NFL analyst and former insider Lewis Rick Lewis. I think the question at the very base at this. Does this change anything for you Wendy. It doesn't change how I feel about how myles Garrett should have responded to what happened there. Obviously you can't ever condone physical violence against another player on the football field and the manner in which he engaged but what it does is it raises questions as to what exactly did transpire to precipitate that kind of or rather elicit that kind of reaction from myles Garrett not obviously needs to be investigated Fully right now I mean you would assume what the technology that the. NFL has on the football field. As far as players being miked up in the Mike that they have around the field that they would be able to catch this kind.

ESPN daily terms conditions. Exclusions apply I think there could be some insight gleaned from the details that happened happened in the lead up to the incident. What do we know about what occurred right before that moment for me? What I saw was it's late in the game? Brown's obviously have a game in hand. It's literally the next last play of the game and Myles Garrett Russia's Mason Rudolph Eddie takes the step it got hit again. He flares it out at men's catches it that is not a first down. Pick up on his own react saw where we got flags and it gets a late. Hit on them Mike It. It appears to be a clear personal. Boris now gets in there and knocks. And there's going down inside the ten yard line as they get into it on the ground. Tom Mason Rudolph then appears to be caught at myles. Garrett helmet a bet it's unclear is whether or not he's trying to attack them or get myles Garrett off of them and they get into it and then myles Garrett essentially starts pulling mason. Rudolph buys helmet off the ground and then rips it off his head Mason. Rudolph comes right after him and as he comes after them seemingly yelling something Adam myles Garrett then held back by some guys myles Garrett then clocks awesome over the head with the helmet and getting in there was myles. Garrett took the helmet off of Mason Rudolph and slammed him on the top of the head. DOC boy at that point Garrett goes to the ground and Marquees pouncey and others are sort of all over him at that the officials were smart. They'd call it a game. Eight seconds left. They just say all right. The game's over Ryan one thing that struck me about this game in particular. Is that before for the incident with Myles Garrett happen we saw player let off the field bleeding from his helmet because of an illegal hit. No deontay Johnson is town but not up yet and the steeler players are yelling at the browns various. This got kicked out of the game to and people weren't the nearly as angry right because we asked these players to play with such aggression and violence but then we draw a bright red line. What do you think this incident and what Garrett did says about the nature of the game itself maybe shows sometimes the unrealistic expectations? We put on athletes leads as if they're not even human beings. I mean what we're asking of. Many of our athletes is to run full speed into a train. But stop on a dime when something might occur that we believe they should stop for something that we couldn't do. We expect them and yet most players the vast us majority of players they do stop on a dime right which is why what happened was so unusual and I think so upsetting to people. What do you think it is that made him cross that line? It's one of the great unknowns right and I can't know exactly what he was thinking but I do know. This is a guy who to me when I interviewed him. Seemed like a guy who is still growing still learning as a football player. Now what I was foolish and allow myself to that as out of character but emotional game by myself to fall into the motion snow the job. Let's not forget. This is a young football player. This is a guy who for many years didn't have that aggression so as learning how to have that aggression and control it on the field and just like a lot of football players and just like a lot of people he's growing. He's trying to figure out in that job. What's right and what's wrong? There's been a lot of speculation or last few days a stat. This story this incident is going to define myles Garrett. It's going to follow him for the rest of his career. Do you think that's true or do you think it should should be true. I don't think it will and I don't think it should. And here's why we look at athletes. It's and we expect them to be exactly like us but yet if we do things that are wrong. Expect people to move on from it. In fact many people do here's Myles Garrett. A young guy early twenties. He's just growing into himself. As a person I think if myles Garrett dedicates himself off to being the ultimate professional to being a classy guy on the field as well as an excellent player I think people are GonNa move on. I think important part of that was. He admitted that he was wrong immediately. And he's still shows contrition and I think he'll continue to do that until people start accepting it now. The should it part I think is so so much more important. This was a situation. That can't be excused. If Mason Rudolph sit with the different portion of the helmet and he could cause some serious damage so you can't excuse an incident like this one thing I've learned about myles Garrett from talking to him all that time was this is a guy who wants to be more than just a football player. He wants to be a great person. He wants his life to be about more than the game. So I think when you talk about should it define them. I think what people should do is look at his life the things he does both on on and off the field and look at how he grows from this and that should determine what is legacy is not one moment in the heat of a football game.

Beyond the Helmet Hit: Who is Myles Garrett?

"Myles Garrett delivered enact that will define him for the rest of his. NFL career from now on no matter what he does people will always remember myles Garrett Eric as the guy that could have killed football player on a football field by taking his helmet and swinging it like a weapon. Brown's defensive end myles Garrett has appealed suspension for striking steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph in the head with his own helmet. Who is the player behind that violent image Mitch burned into fans minds? ESPN's Ryan Smith sat down for extensive interviews with Garrett before this fateful season began today today. The story of mild-mannered pass rusher. WHO's now at the center of a football firestorm? It's Thursday November twenty first. I mean this is. ESPN daily presented by Dell small-business yesterday myles myles Garrett went to New York to appeal his suspension. What happened but let's remember this all stems from the game Thursday Night Ryan Smith is a correspondent and legal analyst for ESPN CLEVELAND Browns? Pittsburgh steelers and in the final seconds Mason Rudolph and myles Garrett get into who it and myles Garrett pulls off Mason Rudolph Helmet and hits them with and getting in there was myles Garrett. Ain't took the helmet off off and slammed him on the top of the head. Oh my goodness data and Garett an indefinite suspension at minimum suspended for the rest of the season and the playoffs offs myles Garrett is agent his lawyers they all met in front of an appointed artless common arbitrator for this James Thrash. A person I would hear this case former. NFL Player and presented his case. Any argued from precedent. He basically said that a couple years back. You're a player for the Texans. Antonio Smith swung his helmet at then. Offensive Lineman Richie Incognito for the dolphins and that earned Smith a two game suspension during the preseason and a one game regular season suspension so for Garrett and his people the arguments simple. That's what happened the last time something like this this happened. And that's what should happen for me. Knock a lengthy suspension. I'm getting right now Ryan Myles Garrett. Wasn't the only player involved in the news this today. Mason Rudolph also gave a statement from my involvement. Last week there is no acceptable. Excuse the bottom line is I should have done a better job keeping my composure. In that situation and fall short when I believe it means it'd be a Pittsburgh steeler a member of the NFL. What did you make of that? Here Mason Rudolph is on the day that myles Garrett is having his appeal hearing and he gets up in front of everybody and he apologizes for his. Is Babe you're in this. I found this stunning here. You've got a guy accused of attacking another guy getting lengthy suspension for it and on the day of the hearing the person who arguably I guess you could say has been victimized comes up and talks about his part in it and almost in some ways exonerates the aggressor and in a way showed that. Hey we all had a role in this and nobody should be excused. Everybody has a little bit of blame. I have no ill will towards myles Garrett great respect for his ability as a player and I know this you know if miles could go back you would handle the situation differently Ryan part of the reason I wanted to talk about this story with you is that you spend a lot of time with myles Garrett. You interviewed him for sixty this summer. You got to know him so I was wondering wondering where were you when you first saw the incident. And what was your reaction. I was at home and I was just kind of hanging out flipping through the channels stop by ESPN. And I see something involving myles Garrett and I. It doesn't really compute to me what I'm looking at. But then as I looked closer I realize is exactly what he did. And and I'm hearing the commentary I'm hearing the outrage but the first word that popped in my mind was why I would never ever in any way. Excuse the conduct. It's just an excusable no matter what happened but I spent better couple days with them in our reporting for east sixty and this was a guy who's introverted. This was a guy who in some ways is mild mannered. Heard if you can believe it and this was about as far as anything I would expect from myles Garrett based on the Guy I know what is it that brought him to this point. Well who has the guy you knew. What was it like when you met him? You know what's so interesting. I got to tell you the very first time I met him. He walks downstairs to sit in our interview chair. And he's wearing a queen shirt. He starts talking about Queen loves the group loves. The music is imploring me to go see the movie that kind of is myles Garrett in a nutshell he's exactly nothing like what you would expect from a guy who replays the way he does who appears the way he is his interest are so wide ranging. It was nothing like anything I ever expected. He loves poetry a tree. He's been writing poetry since he was a boy emslie. He walks among the missed unseen. Two most he doesn't exist. He loves COMEX. He's going to comecon this year to attend some events somewhere down the line. I left to go and not to species for. Hey I'm just here to house and finally the costumes. Maybe one day no just myself. He wanted to dress dragon. Ball Z. Character he he loves anime things like that at the beginning of the interview he said to me I was a boy who report Mama for other man to play Publ Myles Myles Garrett. The person is far different from myles Garrett the football player what did you learn about his upbringing. I mean this is a guy who came from a family of athletes so much talent athletically. His mom was an all American American in track. His sister won a national championship. In track is brother played basketball for the nets. And I'm not just talking about average athletes but really really top level athletes another flight. You can do anything like do whatever makes you happy. But you're going to play some sports. He had sort of this. Love hate relationship that that was more hate when it comes to football playing football at that time even though really didn't want to but at that time I really didn't care for bod playing coming back are you can't play vic so played off of the linemen definitely not for me. I played the game and good at it but there was something missing was Kinda and that passion for the game so it was kind of hard to be okay amounts. His First Love was really basketball and at one point when he was in high school athletic director wanted him to play football. so He's a look. You can play basketball as long as you play football. So how does does he go from being a kid who wasn't even sure if he wanted to play the sport to being the number one overall draft pick and it's a really interesting story when he was around around his sophomore year coaches sat him down parents in the room and they sorta gave him an ultimatum. So you're GONNA put your heart in it or you're not what you're gonNA stop waste of People's time laid it all on the line or you can bring your hips almond bus. Sit Down and do I really want this. Do I really WANNA play football. I'm all my life and they say this the get it. No you could be one of the best. It could be the best player in the nation. This guy is a competitor like he wants. That's to win. And I think when he heard that that it could be the best in the country that SORTA gave him permission to sort of go after people to be the aggressive to be fiery on the field. It wasn't about hurting people. It was about showing people that he is the best that he can be the best best and from then on his play chains really started piling up sack numbers by midway through his senior year. Now you got scores scouts else coming in to see him and as he says. Nick Sabin

"That everyone had markings. Penalties also suspended five games in or I'm sorry three games and fined. He's appealing it. I think it will. I'm with you. I think it'll go down to to you. here's a thing about myles Garrett. I think obviously we know the myles Garrett is talented. He's the best player on their team. He was fined in week. One for punching delanie Walker. He was fined for two separate late. Hits on Trevor Simian One on the second hand he broke his leg if you remember. They had eight penalties last night for one hundred and twenty yards tied for fifth. The most in a game this season the most was week one by the way that the penalty not call to a twenty nine penalties for one hundred thirty forty yard right that that was a penalty for eighteen. They add in week one eighteen penalties and we go on with the most that they had. This team is just completely undisciplined. But this this is not like to say that this is extremely out of character for myles Garrett not on whatever you think of miles gear. That's fine but it's not. It's a stretch to say it's out of character. That's I think the way that that the NFL Homs all this down. It can't be an indefinite suspension. The unions GonNa push back on that. You can't be an indefinite suspension. They're going they're just saying that the calm everyone down. They're going to come come up with a number of games. He's gonNA appeal it but he's gone for the rest of the season. I think we can all safely assume that unprecedented that said I do think that Mason Rudolph should probably get a game because the reactions nations who him starting the fight with whether whether I think that the hit was a late hit and Mason Rudolph was reacting to clearly mason. Rudolph was frustrated because he had a terrible game and they were losing. That's not an excuse to start a fight but we see fights every single week all the time they don't ask relate to this level so there's no excuse for myles. Garrett did no matter if Mason Rudolph started or a Rian engaged afterwards after they got up regardless it doesn't matter there's no excuse for what Myles Garrett did I do think Mason Rudolph should probably get a game because that will calm everyone down. Everyone's GonNa get fines pounds. He's going to get two games. They're gonNA walk the NFL's GonNa Watch this tape. So this is never remember.

Will Myles Garrett Get Lengthy Suspension for Helmet Swing?

"Fight. That is GONNA be remembered a lot longer than the Cleveland browns. Twenty one two seven victory on Thursday night football over the Pittsburgh. steelers I am Greg Rosenthal alongside Chris Wesseling in your beautiful house. Chris unfortunately has got to go to bed. She's got an early shift to get to. And you know we've got some wild things to talk about because this game was secondary and we'll get to the game in a bit was largely forgettable big win for the browns but the last ten seconds in which myles Garrett through Mason Rudolph to the ground and then wound up taking his helmet off and Hidden Mason. Rudolph in the head with the helmet is obviously something we've never seen in. NFL history trying to think of similar circumstances Albert handsworth stomping and kicking. Andre Garard the the Cowboys Center in two thousand. Six comes to mind. He was suspended. Five Games for that But it was about as ugly as it gets in the immediate thought is. Can't browns fans just enjoy anything. And then what is the NFL going to do with myles Garrett. Yeah I think we both mentioned the Albert Hanes worth thing to each other and then I think to me it also reminded me a little bit of that west of his playoff game tobacco with the bengals and steelers just losing control at the end of the game. In this case it's really marquees. POUNCEY will be suspended but it's really hard to blame the steelers for much of this. They lost two guys two receivers to helmet-to-helmet hits from undisciplined browns team and then Myles Garrett just lost control just he went outside of his body. It seemed like Doc. He hit brewed off late on the play. which I don't think should be lost in what happens because immediately fans say hey? Rudolph was grabbing his helmet. He was trying to take his off as if he was starting. First of all. It doesn't really matter if that was true and he started anyways but Gary knew what he was doing. It's eight seconds left in the game. Rudolph clearly let go of the past and Garrett was getting in an extra shot in Garrett has such a smart guy writes poetry. He's he's such a smart player the way he plays but he has has a reputation of getting those little extra shots like. He has a little of a reputation among players or broadcaster. He pushes the envelope. And you like that sometimes as as a player but as a fan. But I don't know what it was in this case He. He felt like he had to get that extra shot. And then what happened. And he felt like he had to take Rudolph's helmet and I don't think there's anything you can really do to explain it. It's just a question of whether we see him again this year and everyone immediately after the game is saying we can't see him again. This zero we're trying to protect players and that's probably true. There are six games left in the year. I usually just go off precedent. There's really no precedent for this to me. This is a lot worse than Hanes. Were didn't hanes worth got five games gear obviously has no previous problem with the League. But it certainly wouldn't be surprising if that's it for myles Garrett this year
