"The hour. Muscle it up the middle, Turner ranges along way to get it and throws late. Throw goes to third. We are mutos in safely. And he's great. Real Muto thought that the ball was down the line and he's tagged out by Turner. Wow. JT not only deep Rio Muto but the third base coach as well. Great play great awareness. Wow. And that's right, we've been talking about hidden ball tricks and defensive dekes and this was a good example of the latter, Dave Roberts said just a heady play, Turner sold the wide throw really well, a good player and real muno, but we got him. That was a big out. I thought that was going to be the difference in the game. It was not. This came at the expense of the Phillies, but this was a game that the Phillies won. This was back on May 22nd. That was the one where max Muncie made the game ending error, got sucked into the Phillies nexus of sub par defense, but that was a good defensive play. Nice deke. Well executed mister Turner. And you may have seen some stories circulating about a fancy new pitching machine that the mets are acquiring, that some other teams have already been using, I wrote about this topic last year for the ringer about the new science of pitching machines and the quest for the perfect pitching machine, this advanced one sounds like it's the trajectory sports model, which I wrote about in that piece, but the idea is that the only way for hitters to keep up with pitchers and the science of pitch design is to replicate those pitches more accurately via machines that hitters can use to practice against before the game begins, so these machines more accurately replicate the movement of pitches and also the release point and the simulate the pitcher's delivery, et cetera the idea is that, well, if you can replicate those in gameplay appearances, more closely by training against this machine and having a more accurate facsimile of that picture in your practice than that should be better than just having someone throw slow batting practice or someone even throwing fast batting practice, but from a different release point and with different movement profiles, et cetera, so some teams are using VR to improve their batting practice and train against the pitchers they're about to face in game, and this is another way to do it with more and more advanced pitching machines, so hitters are trying to keep pace however they can, I'll link to the article in case you're interested about the ins and outs and the challenges of actually making a machine, throw like a particular picture, not that the mets need a ton of help on offense these days. They have been out hit by only the Dodgers so far this season, but rather than say not mess with success, they are trying to arm themselves with whatever implements they can use to practice, and they are not the only team going down this road. So I will link to that article on their show page. I will link to that Justin Turner play a video of that, and everything else that we discussed today as usual. You.

"To continue, young men associate for this object organize themselves into an association with constitution and laws to control them and then plunge into the amusement with a sort of young America fanaticism. In almost every town throughout all this region, there is one of these regularly formed and inaugurated ball clubs, the members of which meet frequently to practice the art for the sake of being able to worst some neighboring club, whom they challenge. Not best some neighboring club, but worst. Does that make some sense to? Or by whom they are challenged to a hot contest. Hot contest. Hot contest. The matter has become a sort of mania, and on this account we speak of it. In itself, a game at ball is an innocent and excellent recreation, but when the sport is carried so far as it is at the present time, it becomes a public nuisance. For these reasons, we class ball clubs as now existing with circus exhibitions, military musters, pugilistic feats, cockfighting, et cetera, all of which are nuisances in no small degree. Again, that's from the happy home and parlor magazine, December 1st, 1858, and Richard says the happy home in parlor magazine was published in Boston from 1855 to 1859 to not have a really long run, I guess, containing articles on various pious topics. This excerpt is from an editorial bemoaning kids nowadays, just a time honored go to column topic for someone who's at a material. The objection is not to baseball, but to organized baseball. Baseball was a traditional boys game since colonial times, men might indulge on occasions, such as holidays, briefly throwing off their adult cares, but organized baseball, adults forming clubs with constitutions and officers, sending scores to be published in newspapers, that was another thing entirely. So, play in baseball, just getting together with some friends, just a toss in the old horse hide round or whatever it was made of at the time, fine. No problem with that, according to the happy home in parliament magazine, but when you start getting teams together and trying to beat other people at baseball, that's you've taken it too far. That's a media. And we've only continued to take it further still in that direction since 1858. So sorry to inform the author of that editorial, but their words did not have the intended effect. Now I'm envisioning like a version of footloose but about baseball. Oh, right. Right, because it's like, oh, I can't have these kids dancing, it'll lead to sex and independent thinking. Yeah. Yeah, this is why I wanted to do this history segment for many reasons. We get some insight into the development of certain rules and how we got this crazy game that we have today, but also just because history repeats itself endlessly and this sort of complaint, I guess we don't hear this exact complaint these days. People are playing games. Have you seen this? People are trying to beat other people at baseball. Instead of just having a good time, jeez, relax. Take it easy, people. But we do certainly see complaints about people not playing the game the right way anymore. Every successive generation of players, you have some crusty ornery veterans who say that today's players don't play the game the right way and you just go back to the beginning of baseball history and it was like baseball used to be better. Like this is not quite baseball is dying this argument, although I'm sure we'll get plenty of that in this segment. This is like baseball should die. It's a public nuisance the way that they're playing it these days keeping score and everything. Come on. But you have heard that basically since the beginning because as soon as baseball became professionalized, everyone was just, you know, waxing rhapsodic about how they used to just play for the love of the game, not for the paycheck. And these days, it's just a business and it's not the same anymore. So that hearkening back to some earlier era that was a constant, even if the earlier era was the 1840s instead of the 1850s. Cats and dogs living together, and this will come. That will do it for today and for this week. All right, we got a few responses to our discussion on our most recent episode about home run robberies and whether it actually constitutes a robbery if a tall player just sticks his hand up and manages to intercept the ball before it goes over the fence. David wrote in to say, I think Aaron judge does rob the battery of a home run insofar as he takes the home run from the batter without his permission, but he basically pickpockets the batter. It's a single deft effortless swipe that nabs him the goods, although it's not like he ends up with the home run himself afterward, but the outfielder who makes a fantastic leaping catch, that player pulls off a daring heist, timing the jump, risking the slam against the wall coming down with the big smile showing off the ball, that's a daring heist, right? So David wants us to dub that the home run heist, Christian, Patreon supporter wrote in to say, using aggressive effort to pull down a home run is a home run robbery, being able to easily do the same is a home run burglary. All right, home run burglary it is. And Patreon supporter Kellen writes in with a late breaking suggestion for a name for the history segment, an idea for the history minute, time to play it by year. Not year, but year. All right, Kellen, thank you. That is the leader in the Clubhouse, best suggestion we've gotten so far. Also, the only suggestion we've gotten so far, but not bad, that's the name to beat. And Patreon supporter Aaron wrote in to say, I might have missed you discussing the Justin Turner deke pulled on JT real Muto at third base, Turner pretended the ball sailed over his head, got real Muto to scamper off a few steps, then hurriedly tagged him for.

"Well, well. I mean, it's tricky because so if I were them, I would be conscious of the fact that next year, at least from a luxury payroll, a luxury tax payroll perspective, and granted, you know, they're going to have to replace some number of these guys, but they are due to take like a $100 million dip in payroll just by letting free agent contracts expire next year. And they're going to need to, they're going to need to replace some of these dudes. Like some guys, you might have an on roster answer to already, like you're just going to play start at short instead of DD gregorious, but you get a need like a lot of a bull. Right, yeah. And part of a rotation. So it's not as if they are necessarily going to stay at that level, but they are going to have some attrition next year, you know, Gregorius is a free agent or a neighbor and Kyle Gibson and familiar and Brad hand and Carrera is a free agent next year and I think they have a mutual option for Zac eflin, so that isn't an actual thing that happens. It's just like they're for reasons. And so you could say if you were then we're going to have payroll flexibility next year relative to where we're sitting currently. So what if we took on money at the deadline as a way to reinforce what we have, knowing that next year we're going to dip down below like several luxury tax thresholds. Yeah. They do have a lot coming off the books, but they also still have a lot on the books, at least relative to other teams, like sure. Currently, they have the fourth highest payroll according to the handy dandy roster resource payroll breakdown page after the mets, the Dodgers and the Yankees, so one of those teams is not like the others in terms of who put the bank for the buck that they've got in the season. You can also sort the 2023 2024 and 2025 payroll commitments on this page. And if you do that, they are third in terms of 2023 commitments after the two New York teams. They are first in 2024 commitments and they are second in 2025 commitment. So they have real Muto and Harper in Wheeler and obviously all those guys have been good, but those guys are under team control for a few more years at least. In some cases, much longer. And then you have the recently signed schwarber and Castellanos contracts, right? So that is a lot of, I guess, for a handful of players, now if they were to continue spending at this current level, then you're right, they would still have some room to maneuver there. I don't know that they will be able to convince ownership to stay at that level or whether it was like a, hey, we're already this far invested. Let's make one more push and actually try to win with this team for once. But it's tough when you don't have a foundation a core of homegrown players who kind of came up through your system and actually panned out. They've just been lacking that. And so they've tried to supplement from outside and they've hit on some great free agent signings, but I guess the ones that they tried to make this past off season have not really rewarded them to the same extent. Schwarber and Castellanos have combined to be exactly replacement level according to baseball reference war. They are a bit better than that according to fan graphs word, but they're both in that one O 7 one O 8 WRC plus rash, which is not going to cut it for them, given their other shortcomings. Speaking of which, the Phillies now officially do have the worst team defensive run saved total and the worst team outs above average total. So as was foretold, they have been the worst offensive team in baseball now by those metrics. And it's not going to get better, probably unless Bryce Harper can play defense again at some point. So it's just like a weirdly built team. Yes, it is a very strangely built team. Dave Nebraska took over and, you know, instead of doing the whole full scale rebuild, which would have been pretty depressing to embark on that at this point, he did the latter day Dave dumbrowski move of convince owners to spend more on prominent free agents and it seemed like there was a chance that that could work, but thus far it has not worked. So I just, it's a sticky situation. It's like, I don't know if it's hopeless and again, like they still have a shot, they could turn this thing around this season, but the best they could hope is that they squeak into a third wild card or something like clearly it's not a good team. It's not like a perennial contender, which is what you want when you come out of a long-term rebuild. So that ship has already sailed. Yeah. And it's funny because like, so, you know, our numbers are estimates, right? But they did that weird thing where they went over a luxury tax threshold by a little bit, but not by a lot of it. It could be worse, but with they are the first luxury tax threshold is 230 million and we have their payroll estimated for tax purposes at two 36. So like you might say, oh no, there are already over the threshold or you might say, well, the next threshold is two 50, and you're already going to pay tax in this bracket. So why not just blow it out a little bit, but I don't know if I have a ton of confidence in how they'd spend because they built their team so strangely and I don't know how you remedy all of these issues. So it is a sticky wicked, you know?.

"The biggest shortfall of looking ahead to the schedule is they're all major league teams and whether they have a lousy record they are all capable. Currently the diamondbacks are kind of feeling better about themselves but it's been forever that the phillies have lost to a team or been swept by a team. I think he i'm reading. You gotta go back sixty two years last time. They were swept in a series of three or more games by team that entered with a winning percentage of twenty or lower so this was an historic setback for the phillies and very very disappointing. But it's it's it's clear even prior to this. You're putting money on the braves more than you were the phillies. And i think it's just sort of the collection of the season up to this point to say they've just been too inconsistent. You know the braves were hanging around. When they were dead they had nobody they were hurt their storage or fallen like what lies and they were hanging around and finally got over that five hundred marks where the phillies were always there. And you wondered if they're gonna go underwater and that at least currently is where they're at sixty one and sixty and four games back. It's it's very discouraging and disheartening. And you should go to arizona and you have to win the games up really starts you know when i covered the yankees From nine thousand nine hundred eighty two thousand one. I learned so much about you. Know how the how experienced manifest. Because there were four or five times during that That run of championships. And you know making the playoffs where look like the team was dead. And then they get into games against these younger teams in the oakland. Athletic teams of eric chavez. Miguel tejada which were more dynamic and may have had more talent in that moment. But then you had older guys like paul o'neil who had been through it and tino martinez had been through it and you get into pressure spots and it would be the yankees who would respond. Which is you know what. I've been thinking. All along as as the brave kinda hung in there and the mets didn't put them away in the phillies in the last few weeks. didn't grab this division by the throat. Just you look at the braves. I mean freddy freeman's there. He's postseason now. Bunch deals be swanson has been through this austin. Riley has been through this as young as he is a lot of these guys. And you're like boy. Oh boy on the other hand on the philly side you know. Bryce harper has been around a long time but he hasn't won with this group of players. Joe girardi obviously is a long history of of winning in his career but not with this group and felt like all along that that could be different making if the other teams allowed the braves to be in there and it looks like they're starting to run away with this thing. Well i mean yes riley swanson. There were certain guys that are that are coming through. Freddy freeman's always been a steady force. Jt real muto's the best catcher in baseball goes on for eleven in the series three for his last twenty six now. The sort of ballast of the braves is freeman. And then you wait for the other pieces to join them. And now you like watching an animated cartoon. When when quicksand hardens some of those pieces of atlanta are hardening around freddy freeman some of those pieces around the phillies skies are weakening in softening currently at look it could change but the way the braves are currently playing and given the talent level and given the infusion of the adam duval's and betrays that alexandropolis made at the deadline hard to see them taking steps back and now that we're getting towards the middle and late august into september. That's when you you ride these waves. That's when you're buoy that's when you're lifted because you know october's right around the corner and you find fifth year and to me. The braves are are in fourth year waiting to find fifth and the phillies and to some degree. The mets the mets are kinda stuck in third gear. The phillies have gone from fourth year. Down to third gear. And i'm watching the braves. Just kinda pull away dhs. And there's no reason to think given the health of some of the pictures come back. They're going to go in a different direction. And all of a sudden you're looking at like they checked every box. They have the starting pitching coming back. They had a deeper offense even without. We haven't even mentioned to kuni yet which shows just how good a job alex did and their bullpens really good. I mean you know the phillies did something in their bullpen. But even with the moves they made there was some skeptics about kyle gibson being a starter and in kennedy in the pen. It was one of those like okay. Maybe but nothing about it that would say we are good to go kind of like what the red sox did. Like kyle sorber Good player but are you really trying compared to what the yankees just did or even the raise that's kind of where i land with the phillies and the braves during the corner of the the the the yankees and the blue jays and the raise at all made really really strong legitimate pushes to get better speaking of the yankees Earlier this week luke voids spoke out which you within the yankees culture is unusual to have a player out. Basically complain About you know what is. Playing time might be told reporters. Look i have every right to play as much as anthony rizzo who a just added and he talked about how he led. The majors in home runs last year. I love put wounded yesterday. Look at the night before yesterday. Not only was he the d. h. He was leading off and then he had rizzo hitting two and then judge and then gallo and giancarlo stanton played right field. I do that to me is a a way to keep a player. Happy ravi and and also at some point. I do think it's good for the yankees to go to stanton and say look you're not going to be a d. h. Only and we know that you have more injury risk if you play in the outfield but we need you to play the outfield more to make this work. And it's not only going to be about right in this moment luke void but next year and the year after that gary sanchez. Like they have to figure out a way to fit. All these pieces together in stanton needs to play the outfield on a regular basis. What do you think Well without without question. I mean giancarlo. Stanton i don't.

"Right all right all right. Welcome back to the second part of this week show. This is the part of the show where we take a question from the nation practice question because not only am i going to deal with. That cannot exact specifics of this person situation. But i'll expand on it so that everybody gets something out of this question gates. This question comes in. From laura muto and laurence says hi gary i am sixteen years old and just recently published a book which is pretty frigging great but anyway she says my friends and family bought it and some loved that some not as much i find it what was supposed to be a happy and pro moment in my life is actually causing me stress. I've sold fifty copies. And every time amorini event people ask me how book sales are going. And i feel stupid for saying. I've only sold fifty copies. How do i be content with what i have and stop looking and longing for more. Ps have read all your books listening. Oh podcasts and you've really helped me through some pretty rough times in my wife so thank you all right. Laura first of all fifty copies of a self published book is a lot of copies guy so you have to put things in a certain frame of thinking so fifty copies for self published book is a lot of copies. Actually most people sell tan and eight of those. They bought themselves and gave them away so fifty copies of a self published book as a lot of copies. I know you see you might have heard me talk about. The number of books are sold in the self published when i self published you might hear other authors say they sold x. number of copies and day sell published. Those are the accession the cruise the rule. So if you're going to self publish and in your mind you're thinking in my book could sit there. And i sell my ten thousand copies. You're not connected to reality. So i had.

Well fans who have petitioned for lavar lavar burton to be the latest guest host of jeopardy aren't finished rallying for him as they're hoping he might become the show's next permanent host more than two hundred fifty thousand people have signed the latest petition calling on jeopardy to make burton the next host with new signatures continually being added the petition argued. That burton has quote inspired in shape. The minds of several generations of trivia loving nerds through his roles on reading rainbow routes in star trek the next generations many say that burton is the obvious natural fit to replace out shrek. Jeopardy's permanent hosted. Do you guys agree. Swipe left or swipe swipe right means i like it right. That is correct. Grabbed so yeah. It's a huge swipe right. I mean like this is. This is a complete brainer to me. In fact like they're almost at the point. Now where if they pick somebody else. That not only looks like weird. It just looks stupid. You know what. I'm saying like everybody likes lavar burton and distort the guy who's reading rainbow take a look. It's in a book. You know what i mean. what are we doing. You know what. I am going to with a great deal of politeness and respect. Swipe left i watch jeopardy last week with lavar burton and it. He didn't work for me in that venue. I understand people love lavar burton and all that start didn't work for me. I thought of all the guests hosts the very best one was my mba alec. That would be mine. That would be my pick for host lindsay. What do you think you're go with. Oh yeah totally. I mean miam- bialik also known for her role on what was that. Show the theory. The big bang theory slim blossom. She's an actual neuropsychologist right. I think she was great. But i think lavar burton was born to do this job and in fact he's been he's been like champi championing for this job for like fifteen years like long before alex trebek's was gone and i think he's in a way he's been trying to prepare himself for it so i think he's the best man for the job. That's right yeah. I think he'll he's the kind of guy that he might not blow you away week one but after month to it's a different show and he's into it in different. I think i am not a lavar. Burton hater guys. Gray right I just i liked my mba alec a little bit more but if he gets the job you know good for him. I know he's a he's been part of a lot of people's growing up here so totally totally get it rainbow all right. A group of olympic athletes were caught doing the unthinkable. They were drinking outside in the olympic village. This is a no no in tokyo as breaks. Cove protocol set in place. Athletes are allowed to drink alcohol the olympics but they have to do so all alone by themselves in their own robes. Sounds like what you were choosing to do with your time. You might have a drinking problem. But that's neither here nor there. So the olympic ceo toshiro muto held a news conference about the matter and even confirmed that police were called to the scene. The nationalities of the athletes were that were caught. Weren't ever mentioned Muto said we're looking into the matter. We will take appropriate steps based on our findings. This is just one of the few stories about the terrible time. Athletes are having this year's olympics so that brings me to my question if you guys were invited to compete at the olympics after hearing all these horror stories and if you want to call them that would you even question it considering all the strict rules this year. Swipe left or swipe right. I will snipe Rate i would absolutely consider. I think it'd be so. I've gotten to broadcast seven olympics. And there's something unbelievably you become a citizen of the world when you're at the olympics and i think it is a really powerful idea to represent your country. I you know. I know that they've you know the truth is it hasn't been as bad as i thought it is. I mean for for a lot of athletes. They've had they've had a great experience. The drinking is weird. I think there's always been drinking at the olympic village at least to my knowledge. So i don't know why they got all strict on that but But yeah i would absolutely love to represent american. I believe there is a sport that i could do it. Which shooting As i've as i've said before in the show clinton when i was a young guy a kid at divine word camping maumee ohio. I was Certified as a pro marksman With a with a rifle by the national rifle association. And i still have that little certificate to this day. It's not as fancy as it sounds. It's like the lowest level of certification. But i actually got to call shooting events at the two thousand four olympics and had a blast shoot. I shot a lot of trap. A lotta skeet. When i was growing up lot of target shooting and you can actually a little older and compete in a shooting event. Yeah you're snorting at lindsey tight shot a lot of skiing a lot of trap. This is for the two decided funny. Here's what i'll say. I would love to represent the united states of america doing something but this particular olympiad is just. Not my steve's like there's i mean. I don't want to get off too often the depressing road but like the outset argument that this olympia should not even be happening in terms of the people in japan not even wanted to happen. Pounded with covy compounded with all sorts of other stuff like i. This is part of the reason. Mace well also not really one hundred percent in on watching every other event. It's just like every time i look at it. I'm like this looks a little weird. You know what. I'm saying. Like no crowd so i would love to represent this country. I just don't think that japan would be the game. That did it..

"Games and now we have The head of the tokyo organizing committee just quietly saying we'll continue discussions if there's a spike in cases what what's going on. Yeah i think you kind of hit the nail on the head. Though i feel tushar muto who is the. Ceo of the tokyo committee organizing committee. He was also a press conference could the guy instill sold you know. We've heard about all the various stories that things are going wrong. And he replied like a very very level headed bureaucrat. And said well you know we'll continue discussions if there's a spike in cases we top to a talk with our partners but we'll see what happens when that situation if that situation arises and i think he just got an ultra reactive media situation hit. Everybody is jumping on everything. He didn't actually say we could still council the games he just said. We'll we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. I think probably a bit of frustration for the because they see that these headlines have gone around the world and they did try and deflect that story bit later by saying we're concentrating one hundred percent on delivering a successful games. I think muto was slightly caught on the hop day. He you know he didn't really say anything that extraordinary he responded by saying well. We'll we'll see what happens if the arises. Not quite a reasonable answer. But it's definitely definitely been a sloan around the world in much more sort of sensational way than he expected. I think come deserve fair. Though that that athletes journalists could be starting their days perfectly. Happy perfectly ready to compete or take part in whatever role they have in the olympics and suddenly there's a ping on their phone that says right all over for you you've got fourteen days in quarantine reality. I mean you've seen you know team bbc scotland therein isolation for two weeks. This could happen. Yes they were on a flight with someone who's tested positive close contacts now that this could easily happen. Of course. this is a massive anxiety for the organizers as well as obviously for the teams and media but you know this is the reality of hosting a global event in the middle of a pandemic slightly predictable. You would say you know it. It's not that surprising that it's happening. And you know that is very very stringent testing regime. And some people saying well look if it'd been as stringent regime to generally in tokyo. I think case numbers would have been much higher so in a way seeing the reality of a of a very very stringent regime which has to be said in japan testing has been fairly low level. Some people are saying. That's why numbers. Don't look so bad here but some you know that that is the reality to reassure people that testing everyone every day. And this is what happens. You're going to see more cases. Widespread confirmation the bubble the isolation system that the olympics are going to olympic organizers at set up at the games village to make sure that no one court covert and everybody stayed. Safe has already been broken this this this is done already. Yeah absolutely. I mean the bubble burst. Hasn't it. I mean. The japanese media are slightly sly way filming so to graphing foreign media outon about when they absolutely shouldn't be you know the playbook very very clear. I think we might see people behaving better. If they're popping up on social media being you know seen drinking beer somewhere they shouldn't be so yeah. The media is on the case here. A lot people are very unhappy about how lax they feel. The the the the bubble is and i think in some cases know people are saying we want to follow the rules. But we're not sure what the rules are. And sometimes you know you've seen two teams from different countries having to get on the same bus when they get the airport. That wasn't expected so it's quite difficult for some participants. They maybe want to follow the rules and it's not always that easy for them to do so to funerals in tokyo. Thank you so much for joining us on the globalist. "There's new games. Yeah yep so. And then just today My daughter was here and they're playing together so that's kept them busy so so kids in video games. He knew but but seriously the big thing there is that it's all the stuff i already have. And i'm not investing in a gaming platform where the titles are expensive and they. They wouldn't stick with one that they wanted to so little bit young but the continuity e- you know even like a few months or say where he can just play the exact thing game on his ipad and then put it on the tv and he wants to. Maybe you can set him up a separate user account so he's getting senate cycles sync and everything like. That's a huge value. That people don't appreciate enough sure so he had profiles. That's how it works. Yes he if you step Another count on the apple. Tv user profile. You can have separate ganesan logan as well. Yeah on a new like still have the main problem with the apple. Tv use a staff which is like you never remember user especially. If you're a young kid you just click on the game and forget about so. I wish they'd had like an old so that every time you let launched guy muto you would oskoui's planning something or at least a more regular into voting never because unfortunately the army way to swish uses on the apple. Tv is to open the invisible control center right. Yeah So that that's been fine and then one more thing i'll say before we go forward is i read about. You know my experience so far with five g. And i was thinking about it. You know if somebody asked me quickly what do you think five g. it'd be like doesn't exist and i feel very vindicate on this point. Do you give me well. That's how i would have done it but but in thinking about it and looking back like almost a year. Five on the iphone. I did have things to say about it. That wasn't just doesn't exist. mostly my experience when i was in orlando I could test ultra-wide five g. with verizon and but then i also found that in that particular city. At&t's five g. was more broadly available than typical five g. It was just the band that was so nice about verizon I probably knew this. But i forgot. At he was calling their filter wide band. five g. five plus and So i found five plus on like maps of where already exist and One happens to be in new orleans at the the stadium where the saints play. And so i'm going this weekend just by chance and i'm going to try it out. See if i can get close enough to to sit on my screen But yeah i read the piece and add more than i thought. I would which is kind of often but i think most of the things i've mentioned here before like the thing where i can fall back to three j. anymore but when when lt is like to to too many people in the network and comes to a crawl By in the same had the problem where we're five days available you know then. This doesn't happen anymore. Where lt was a no go there now. Five years fine So it's a mixed bag. But i had more to say that would yeah. I think it'll be fun. Look at that like in a year from now or like five years from now and c. way like whenever i was jabbing on five g. was always in the context of like the iphone twelve cycles specifically yeah and and the pandemic bear incomes have. Everybody was stuck indoors. But you would still have apply just the same. But yeah i like maybe iphone. Fourteen next year the the five situation will be very different. Yes the the. The current thing is still way more like the the see-saw still balanced on the favor of marketing rather than like actual practical functionality. Yeah and then. Back to the thing about iphone versus mac for me the fact that the the ipad has has. Ltv has always been a nice But because it's five g you know and if you're in one of those those areas where you've got the ultra wideband stuff. That's faster than home wifi often. And even if you've got you know three hundred four hundred five hundred down that's impressive for a device that you can. You might be doing things like downloading larger files or facetime or You know think things that take up more space where streaming a four k. video not. Just why are you gonna and phone. Maybe but the the demos they are more like You know downloading super large files for medical doctors and and things are self driving. And then you know you've brain surgery recently which is good for people with brains but but the fact is on the ipad is also made me appreciate it in a new way besides were the phones mainly it says hotspot for mac of the time you know. Now it's on my on my ipad And so that's a factor as well. Yeah the ipads a different equation. Different more standard and value. Their happy hour is brought to you by break on vacation this summer. You know after months or years in china inside whether you're at work or at home working at the gym you always on the move and when you're on the move you wanna be packing great small waters headphones with the. "On the western side of the Indian subcontinent, there is a city called Puna with an estimated population of seven million people. It's the eighth largest population center in India. As the informational technology capital of the country known as the Oxford of the East due to many universities and technical schools scattered throughout the city. At the near center of the city on the Bank of the Muto River is a majestic eighteenth century fort called Shawnee war water. was home to some of India's greatest warriors and politicians as well as some of its most dangerous betrayals. The death and destruction tied to the fort has left behind shadows Phantom pushes and pulls and disembodied voices crying out for help. These spirits are the last remnants of the Fort's storied history as a series of fires have ravaged the building itself. In order to understand the loss experienced by both these spirits and the culture they came from one has to die far back into Indian history. If South Asia can be defined by anyone conflict. It's the region's ongoing religious wars between Hindus and Muslims long before the British and Portuguese arrived and exacerbated these problems the countries we now know as India and Pakistan were divided into smaller kingdoms who fought for religious and cultural dominance. The Economist: The Intelligence
Putsch comes to shove: Venezuela
"And welcome to the intelligence on economist radio. I'm your host. Jason Palmer every weekday. We provide a fresh perspective on the events shaping your world. After yesterday's dramatic attempt to oust Venezuela's president. We take a look at coups around the world, what makes them happy. What makes them succeed, and what are the risks for coup-plotters fail? And a surprise raid on North Korea's embassy in Madrid reveals just how difficult and thankless it is to be a dissident against the North Korean regime. But I. In Venezuela yesterday, the opposition leader one Guido made his move to try to overthrow the embattled President Nicolas muddle, he claimed his operation. Liberty would be the final push to depose a man who has retained power only through a sham election. Mr. Guido is supported by millions of Venezuelans or suffering from regime inflicted hunger and hardship. But it's the support of the military. He needs in order to take power. And despite promising early signs not enough of them decided to abandon Mr. Muto. Lobue leniency called Pai tau. In a defiant television address, the president called the attempt of failure lambasting those who handed their souls over to the coup mongering, far, right? I was waking up shortly after six AM by the sound of saucepans being bashed, which is a traditional form of protest in Venezuela. Stephen Gibbs rights for the economist he was among the crowds in the capital Caracas yesterday as events unfolded. And it soon transpired what was going on. And that was the one I do was calling for a military uprising. We went over the us. Lootah bell imprinting gynecology perfume in no fuel inter inter one hundred zero as soon became apparent that. This was by no means a normal day all shops with barricaded opposite. As they usually are when there is a protest, but this was not a typical protest because a Hong wide other was out with soldiers. And they were all standing on this a motorway that overlooks the military basement airbase right in the center of Caracas and those soldiers will wearing blue on bans as a symbol of their defection and the crowds grew and grew. An inside that base. The sort of big question was whether the people inside the soldiers, the conscripts inside would he'd what those outside were saying, which is come and join us rebel against the Madora government. Pretty quick it became apparent that. They weren't going to do that it will far in ice towards the crowns toward us that were just on the other side of the barricade. And then things got even uglier the rebel soldiers. Apparently sort of rattled by something began to fire live rounds into the air. That go to whole lot of people running and it was a precarious situation. And then there was a sort of a standoff that lasted for several hours. One of the more striking things that was was. There was Leopold Lopez. He is Venezuela's most famous political prisoner. He's been in jail or under house arrest since twenty fourteen. So to see him walking the streets. Not balking particularly far was quite extraordinary in in. He managed to release himself by a defection of those people that were guarding him. So it was clear that this wasn't as I say a normal protest. Something unusual was going on that went on for several hours until after the tear gas through gone on bearable. Most of the protesters recapped to the square in out mirror here in eastern Caracas. And there was quite oh and Leopoldo Lopez and several members of the national guard who had defected, and they were being sort of hugged by supporters. They were some of them with. With the family, and this was the image. Of course, the opposition was hoping would be repeated massively across the country. This is what they're trying to do. They're trying to do a sort of fell revolution where the feared security forces. Give up put down their arms and say, you know, we're not going to support Madore or anymore where with this new president and everything's going to change. It didn't happen. It sounds like there was good public supports on the streets anyway for Mr. Guido or the people rallying behind him more widely. The short answer is. Yes, I mean, given that he was a relatively unknown figure last year. And now he is unquestionably the most famous opposition leader in Suada. It is probably were saying that a lot of the support for two is a sort of protest vote against Maduro Midori is not popular. But he given that he is saying that he's leading a popular revolu. Nation that in his last a contested election. The one that you know, Guido and the opposition and much of the international community says was rigged last year in a he's standing for reelection. Or he stood for reelection. In the midst of the deepest recession in the world inflation heading for ten million percent, everyone feeling poor more miserable public services here. Collapsing. So, you know, the idea that he could really come on Syria support seems implausible and what about the military whose allegiance has always been the Lynch pin here. What what support does Mr. Guido have from them? I mean, it might be fair to say not as much support as he hopes since he came on the scene in early January. He has repeatedly said look, I can only do this. If the military come with me, I think there's no question in the lower ranks of the army and the forces people know happy head because they're suffering. Exactly the same way the most. Venezuelan's suffering. The problem is that the high ranking generals and the of Venezuela that notoriously has a top heavy army with with thousands of generals a lot of them on a benefiting from the chaos here from the corruption which Unity's that may afford them a new also the whole forces. This is one of the things that were job is Maderas assisted. Did he politicized that institution? Effectively everyone sort of fouls their allegiance to the socialist, revolution and not just Venezuela. So it is a relatively world controlled institution. As as one guy to is is finding out and what will happen to Mr White. Oh, if this fails altogether. If this fails, which is perfectly probable identing it's necessarily the end of quavo. You know, he will probably continue an hope that the drip-by-drip discontent in the military against Maduro. We'll alternate. Really bear fruit. And I think the other person to watch is there Puerto Lopez. He's now out of house arrest. He's going to be living. It seems in the Spanish embassy. That means he's conceive people. He can meet people he can negotiate and that will be an instinct additional little twist to this long-running saga.

Thousands Of Central American Migrants Stuck In Tijuana, Waiting To Seek Asylum
"President Trump says there's a humanitarian and national security crisis on the US Mexico border. This idea of a border emergency can be traced back to the reports that began a few months ago of a caravan of Central American migrants, traveling up through Mexico to the US many of those migrants are are now stuck in Tijuana, Mexico, just south of the border from San Diego. And that's where NPR's John Burnett joins us from now. Hi, John airy, we've heard about thousands of migrants stuck in Tijuana. What are you seeing? There will you know, this is ground zero of what the president considers the migrant crisis. I mean, you've got central Americans who are waiting in all the major Mexican border cities batik wanna is where you really see them. We started out with somewhere between five thousand six thousand migrants who'd come up into caravan. The numbers are definitely down to perhaps two thousand three thousand. Migrants. Now that are still here some gone back to Honduras some have been deported by Mexican authorities. Some have crossed into the US to request asylum, and then others, you know, crossed the border illegally. They climbed the fence, and they were arrested and instill others went to other Mexican border cities where there's less of a weight to cross. So, you know, the the the numbers are trickling down. So the numbers are down. But still a lot of people for t- quantity to deal with. How is the city copen? You know, it's just it's chaotic what we've seen today. There's more than a dozen shelters here, the big one L Bader atoll, you know, it's it's the best organized by the federal government. And then you have all these others. We went to one that was run by the and Bassedas of Christ evangelical church where you had people a leading intense inside the church sanctuary. But outside was this squalid drainage ditch with hogs all rooting around and children around they're playing and yet people in Tijuana are trying to help the migrants. And so you have these these these shelters that have just sprung up in houses, and with different do or groups, and with churches, and really you just get this sense that they they still don't know what to do with this crush of people who are here. What about Americans you're right over the border from San Diego. Do you see many US people? They're trying to help out. You do there's lots of volunteers. They're over here. They're offering legal advice. They're bringing food. They're bringing medicine summer bringing you know, knitting needles and yarn for them, you know, give them something to do while they're waiting. I mean this morning they called number one thousand six hundred twenty seven that's how many migrant families have gotten into the US to ask for asylum in there. Still many many more waiting weeks. What are you hearing from the migrants themselves? You've spoken to. Well, these are these are single men these are families their grandmothers, and you know, they've been here waiting for so long some for six to eight weeks, and they seem to be, you know, just very frustrated. Some are still waiting in line for their numbers to be called and others are deciding to take jobs here in Tijuana. There's a a labor shortage, and so some are working as a as Masons others are going to work in these fabrication plants Mckee LA's, and then still others have decided to bring caught and Muto to jump the wall. And so they go to this area where they can crawl over one of the lower fences where they're promptly arrested by the US border patrol. But they know that that's a rash decision that they're going to be detained if they do that. And so many want to wait, but they're really getting frustrated here. Yeah. The times are so long just in our last thirty seconds. President Trump last month announced a policy called remain in Mexico where asylum seekers. Would have to wait in Mexico for an immigration hearing in the US any sign of that taking shape. You know that policy has been suspended. Ari? I spoke to a senior government official familiar with border security plans, and because of the complexities of the diplomacy between Mexico in the US. They are not returning immigrants seeking asylum to Mexico to await their immigration cases. The ones who are going to the border largely are being allowed to ask for asylum and then being either detained or or released. All right. A notice to appear and immigration court NPR's, John Burnett Antigua. Thanks much. You bet. All right.
