And got its hands on the power of the federal government is the basic recipe for democracy is falling apart. And so last fall on, the media producer Leia Feder reported on one of those places Poland, a young democracy teetering on unstable ground and where it's far right Nationalist government is intent on rewriting the nation's painful history. For almost a decade, Poland has been in the grip of a conspiracy theory what really happened when a plane crashed in a forest in western Russia, killing Poland's president and dozens of other government officials. The plane had been on route to commemorate another Polish tragedy, a massacre that had occurred in the very same location in 1940. 1973 documentary explored the mystery While the German army is advancing from the West, the Soviets crossed Poland's eastern front court in a method of Polish army collapsed, Um, surrendered. The victors, divided the country down the middle and imprisoned every soldier they captured. Russia took a 215,000 Poland officer Corps were never seen alive again. Many. What die near Smolensk, in a forest called catching after decades of opacity and suspicion on investigation in the early nineties, confirmed finally, that it was not Hitler. But Stalin, who had ordered the massacre. And so when, on April 10th 2010 a delegation of 96 Polish politicians and officials traveled from Warsaw to Smolensk. It was in service of remembrance and reconciliation. But what happened instead compounded the national pain. Poland's prime minister burst into tears when he heard the news today that his country's president was killed in a plane crash pilot tried to land in a thick fog at least twice missing the runway. And ignoring the control tower's direction to divert to another city. Not just losing the president of that country. The first lady, the ahead of the army chief of staff, the National Security Office head deputy Parliament speaker, the deputy foreign minister. It was a devastating national tragedy. What's more, the symbolic layering was undeniable. Ah, longstanding tragedy finally solved and a new one appears in its place. And yet, in the immediate moments and days after the crash, there was a kind of common shock. An Applebaum is a journalist and academic beast in Warsaw At the time of the 2010 crash, her husband was minister of foreign affairs in the Polish government, and there was pretty straightforward reporting. About what had happened. What was immediately clear There were people on the ground who saw the crash. So there was a kind of concensus initially about what had happened that it was a terrible Accident and that you know many people of value to the nation had died. But the story started to shift is the investigation into the crash proceeded. Investigators say pilot error was mostly to blame. It became clear that one of the causes of the crash was the fact that the pilots were under pressure to land. The president's delegation had arrived late for the plane. They were running behind schedule as they got closer to smell lens, which was even really an airport. It was a kind of airstrip in the forest. They began to be worried about the fog and the pilots weren't sure they could make the narrow landing. But according to black box recordings, Polish President Lech Kaczynski, head of the opposition party directed the pilots to do it was meant to be the launch of his reelection campaign. So there were cameras there which he knew, and he was very anxious to go under pressure, the pilots tried to make the landing. Instead, they hit a tree, killing all 96 people on board. The president's twin brother, the head of the nationalist right political party in Poland, same parties, the president He didn't like this story. It made the president look bad, more to the point. This is a terrible crash very near to a place where a Nurlita generation of poles were murdered by the Soviet state. Because of that eeriness. People immediately began to speculate that there was actually a different, deeper story that perhaps the Russians caused the crash. Perhaps there was a bomb on the plane. And conspiracy theories began to proliferate online. The president's brother, Nijinsky began openly alluding to them. Kaczynskis Law and Justice Party made unraveling the Smolensk conspiracy. It's key campaign promise once you had bought into their idea that there is a secret conspiracy, possibly involving the Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. Possibly involving the Russians, and that lots of people high up in the state were implicated in some great big secret plot to kill the president. If you believe that Then you can believe a lot of other things. The point was to get people to believe in a kind of alternative reality to doubt institutions to doubt that the government was telling them the truth, and that was absolutely an attempt to help win an election, But it did more than carve out a new electorate. It created new divides in Polish society. Where one's Polish politics were split between Communists and anti communists around economic policy. Now it was over a vision of history. It was how you see Poland's place in the world. And whether you think secret dark forces air trying to undermine your country and whether you know you need to elect a government of Patriots in order to make sure that doesn't happen. Where you fell on that dividing line affected how you would vote and how you would understand politics for the next several years, And so when line justice one in 2015 it spawned a new kind of power a power based on the willingness to embrace the myth. They fired large numbers of Polish civil servants. Polish members of the foreign service. All kinds of people who work for the government also leaders and board members of state companies and they replaced all of them with people whom they were sure we're loyal. And one element of the loyalty test was belief in this Molinski myth. Smolinski conspiracy implied that there were dark, mysterious forces continuing to try to manipulate and undermine the Polish nation. It also drawn the larger story of a Poland continually attacked by outsiders and the valiant Polish resistance to threats past and present line Justice Road that narrative electoral victory. And then wrote its electoral victory to further consolidation of that narrative in service of Polish nationalism.

"Best and let issue handled the rest at issue dot info slash murder minute. Welcome, back to murder minute now. The story of the Florida lottery murder. Abraham Shakespeare was born in the mid nineteen sixties in sebring Florida a town known for its annual motorsport endurance event. Twelve hours of see bring. And it's quaint. Downtown district lined with historic buildings. Forty three years later in two thousand ten, his murdered body was found just an hour away implant city. The, following year, his mother Elizabeth Walker told the ledger that she still expected him to pull up in the driveway. The kind hearted man. She's still recalls vividly as a small boy sitting at the kitchen table, eating sugar, smack cereal and she remembers when she realized he was missing along with the preceding roller coaster of events as though they all happened yesterday. It started on November, fifteenth two, thousand six when Abraham and his coworker. Michael Ford stopped at a convenience store for soft drinks and cigarettes on their way to Miami. Abraham had never really known financial security much less wealth. He dropped out of school in the eighth grade to help his father in the fields, and he had a rough time holding down a job after that. At the time of the road trip, he was working as an assistant truckdriver loading boxes for eight dollars an hour, so the idea of potentially winning a large sum of money seemed worth the two dollar price of a lotto ticket. He spent two of the five dollars. He had in his pocket on such a ticket. It must have been one of the most surreal moments of his life. When he realized his numbers six, twelve, thirteen, thirty, four, forty to fifty, two made him the winner. In a moment, he went from bad making ends meet to winning a thirty million. Dollar Jackpot? He posed for a photo holding giant Florida Lotto. Check a look of pride in his eyes. Abraham Shakespeare had finally made it. Or, so he thought. Over the next two years Abraham was. Generous with his newfound funds, giving away some family friends and even strangers. Really having no idea how to manage it all. Prior to winning the lottery, he'd never even his own bank account. He had one ran five thousand dollars and loaned another ten thousand. He gave a million to one relative and two hundred fifty thousand to two others he paid off to mortgages of friends who are nearing foreclosures and paid for the burials of five people most of whom he didn't know personally. He wanted to buy his mom house, but she declined not wanted to deal with the taxes and upkeep. He did by himself a new home for one point one million dollars and put another million in count. He set up for his son for whom he owed child support. Meanwhile the CO worker who was with Abraham when he purchased a lottery ticket, claimed it was his ticket and sued him. Abraham won the case, but still had to pay hefty legal fees. More people sued him and many more took advantage, as he struggled to adapt to his new life and identity, and the vastly different ways people perceived and treated him. So caught up in the whirlwind of it, all and rife with Navy Tae. Important steps were missed like getting his first ever driver's license before hitting the road in his new BMW. Police stopped him for that and for not wearing a seatbelt. As time passed. Abraham felt increasingly frustrated and alone, stating more than once that he wished he could go back to the way things were when he could walk around like a normal person without people approaching him for money again and again. While, his lack of knowledge around money made things especially complicated, even people with more financial know how often struggle with managing their lotto wins. A study conducted by Wolfe. Street showed that nearly one third of US lottery winners declared bankruptcy often within a few years. Most however, do not end up paying the ultimate price of their life. Things grew darker for Abraham once. He met a woman named dee more. She tracked him down. She wanted to write a book about his life. At the time Abraham wasn't aware of her criminal record, which included false accusations and insurance fraud. To him, she seemed completely legit as though she genuinely wanted to help him work with him. Her Company even purchased properties from Abraham including his home. He trusted her. And Soon Abraham seemed to disappear. He had expressed so much angst over the way. Things have been going for him that his family wasn't surprised to see less of him and then none of him. They knew he long to get away from it all and figured he had taken his money to a beach somewhere in the Caribbean Sea. But when months passed with no word from him. Only from DD more who swore he was fine, they grew concerned. On November ninth, two, thousand nine. They reported him missing. Someone offered authorities a tip about his disappearance, mentioning a large concrete slab in the backyard of a property more had purchased from Abraham. They said it seemed fairly new, and very out of place nine feet below. The concrete authorities found Abraham Shakespeare's body. Upon further examination, they estimated he had been buried there for months after dying from two gunshot wounds to the chest. Soon after police took more into custody in connection to the death. Two weeks later, she was formerly charged with first degree murder. The investigation quickly drew damning information about more. Before Abraham's remains have been discovered in her yard, she had been telling people. She helped him disappear because he wanted to leave town and get away from financial pressure. In other instances. She said he was sick in hospital. She blamed other people for his murder to including an attorney drug dealers, and even her fourteen year old son. Mark claimed she only helped him manage his money properly and professionally according to ABC News adding that quote. There's no jury that's going to convict me. They're saying that I took a gun, put it up and killed another human. Being I would never do that. But the mounting evidence continued to point to her. Investigators, found mart surveillance video footage, showing her rushing to buy large amounts of duct tape, trash bags and plastic sheeting around the estimated time of the murder. And seven months after Abraham went missing. She still had his cell phone. Worse. She was using it to text his friends pretending to be him. She made other attempts to make it appear as though he remained alive to. She offered one person two hundred thousand dollars in exchange for claiming that he had seen Abraham alive, and she said another five thousand to his son for his birthday. Abraham's mother Elizabeth testified that Moore tried to convince her not only that her son was still alive, but that he had aids. More even forged. Elizabeth from Abraham not realizing that he was illiterate. During the investigation, a man named Gregory Todd Smith worked as an informant to authorities leading a double life for months stringing more along and gaining her trust, his efforts paid off when she asked him if he knew someone who take the rap for murder in exchange for fifty thousand dollars. She also led him at another man to.

The following week top was charged with rape use of deadly weapon in the Commission of a felony and first degree murder taps. Trial began in May of one thousand nine hundred eighty eight. Nearly two years after Angie's murder his attorney tried to suppress the confession which was filmed along with all of his interviews by the argument that it had been coerced. The the judge determined that most of his statements could be used against him and those tapes became the focal point of much of the trial. The first time police interview tap they saw hobbs as the suspect. According to former reporter cannot Berg who now writes and conducts research for the National Shnell Registry of exonerations at that time investigators wanted tapped implicate. Hobbs they lied to tap stating that Hobbes had already already placed tap at the scene of the crime. They claim that they could help tap. If only he would cooperate. He would if he could tap told them describing himself itself as just a scared little man and swearing that he didn't know anything about the rape or murder as he interviews carried on pressure on tap hap- mounted until finally he offered the part about helping hobbs attack. Angie basically out of self defense. He said he was forced to slash her right breast. I as the questioning morphed into a pressure fueled interrogation according to tax defense the claims investigators made to him grew more extreme team turning into life or death decisions. They told him that he could face the death penalty and that if he couldn't recall what he'd done it was because he had repressed oppressed those traumatic memories during the trial. One of the police officers testified the top described Angie's clothing at the time of her murder. which which could implicated him but examination of the tapes and polygraph results later showed the tap never mentioned her clothes until after he had been shown on crime scene photos early on prosecutors offered typically deal seeming unaware of some of the exchanges between him him and police they believed was lying to string them along so they rescinded that deal? His confession was played for the jury and even though they lacked. DNA evidence connecting acting him to the scene. He was convicted. Carol Dodge Glare tap as the judge read his sentence thirty years to life in prison prison for the rape and murder given that the man who sperm was found on her daughters brutalized body hadn't been identified. Carol new new full justice hadn't been done another man had to be involved not just tap in an interview with dateline in August. Two thousand twelve. She said the anger just surged through me. And that's when I went to the streets and I literally put sixty thousand miles on my truck searching for her killer and she wasn't driving only through safe neighborhoods or at broad daylight at one point. Someone put a gun to her head as she comes. The streets treats new leads cropped up but didn't lead to anything. Substantial Carol would often end up. Parked outside of Angie's old apartment building caught up in what she described as an all out obsession. She wouldn't rest until the man or another man who helped take Angie's life was found. She poured cord over police reports until they were virtually etched in her memory barely sleeping between her searches. One of those reports included a phrase that stood out to her something about pubic hairs. Not just blood found on Angie's body. It sounded like something that could help from DNA standpoint. So she reached out the expert Dr Greg. MP Kin who happened to live in Idaho hemp eakin also a fruit fly. Geneticist and college professor became involved in the criminal. The justice world in the early two thousands when he was asked to test DNA that ended up helping innocent man be freed Georgia Prison Hem peaky and has since stayed involved in such work even helping free. Amanda Knox the US College Student Who is wrongly imprisoned Italy and Founding Idaho's Innocence Project Act when he heard message urging him to help her find out what happened to her daughter. He phoned her back immediately. Carol all told him about the pubic hairs. Then called. Idaho Falls Police Department learning that the hairs have been stored in evidence untested for years. The hairs were sent off for testing. The results showed they didn't match. Angie or tap no physical evidence connected anyone to the murder except for the sperm firm and those hairs which belonged to the same person one killer tap. She believed had to be innocent now. Carol felt felt. She had to do something she had not yet done. Watch all the interview tapes beyond his confession as she did not only did she perceived Steve Manipulation as an officer Prada tapped to consider hypothetically committing the murder and eventually guiding him to confess but she noticed that he could not identify other details details such as the building. Angie lived in a corner building. That would be difficult to forget. Detectives kept correcting him. She observed rather than making way for honest two answers so carol decided not only to fight harder to find her daughter's killer but to help free innocent man. This was striking considering that Carol previously wanted tap to receive the death penalty meanwhile the officer largely responsible for putting tap behind bars. Ars remained certain he had the right man. Furthering her efforts Carol contacted. Stephen Risen a well known expert in false confessions sends and a law professor at Northwestern University in two thousand ten driven co authored. A paper entitled the three Errors Pathways ways to false confession and wrongful conviction. The report analyzed three mistakes that take place in every false confession first. Investigators instigators have to miss classify. An innocent person is guilty so classify someone like tap as a murderer second they have to subject them to quote guilt presumptive active accusatory interrogation that invariably involves lies about evidence and often the repeated use of implicit and explicit promises and threats. Let's so for example telling tap that they could prove he was guilty. He'd probably repressed it and he may as well try to escape capital punishment. Then once wants the interviewers have elicited a false admission they pressure the person to provide opposed admission narrative that shaped together often supplying innocent suspect backed with the facts both public and non public of the crime. That sounds a lot like the frequent corrections officers made that Carol noticed and taps interviews news by analyzing these steps the author's hope to help minimize false confessions from leading to wrongful convictions. This is pretty big considering saying that the innocence project found that out of one hundred thirty people who exonerated based on DNA evidence after being convicted of murder eighty one of them over sixty exte- percent falsely confessed. As of two thousand eighteen driven agreed to look into antidote as murder and taps confession free of charge. Drizzly agreed to look into the Angie Dodge murder case and taps confession free of charge in a report published in two thousand fourteen cortines. He concluded that the confession was indeed coerced produced through pressure and deceit and enhanced by the officers who supply tap with information to lend and credibility to statements. He helped bring in the innocence project of New York to work on the case along with the Idaho. Innocence Project and judges for justice just to secure taps released from prison. Not only was it confession. False emotion filed by taps attorneys argued. But it didn't make sense with the evidence. Silence taps that are murder happened at the time when Andrew was out with her friends for example when in reality she was later after being asleep for some time in March two thousand seventeen taps rape conviction was vacated and his murder conviction sentence was reduced to time served. Thanks to Carol Dodge odd and the team she pulled together. He was released from prison. So who had killed Angie Dodge a couple of years prior to taps release these detectives searched ancestry dot com for DNA that might be connected to the case and they gotta hit a close enough match for someone. They believed to be related to the attacker. After securing a search warrant. They learned the man's identity. Michael UH three. His son also stone-age Michael assery quickly became a suspect. The name Mike had come up in interviews with tap as someone he thought might have been involved and as the team researched. Michael US three. He seemed suspicious. He had social media connections and Idaho falls and had created a grisly short film called murder. Delia the film centered on a convict. Who Stabbed to death? Not Unlike Angie Slang.

Procrastinating or trying to shake off a bad day best fiends is my must play download the game and joined the adventure today get best Phoenix now. That's friends without the our best feeds. Welcome back to murder minutes today. You'll hear the story of the murder of eight nurses in in Chicago in one thousand nine hundred sixty six. Many of the nursing students at South Chicago Community Hospital considered one another family after a horrific night. Eight of the student nurses would be bound together forever not only friends but his victims and what would be considered Chicago's worst crime of the century. Melito Gargo grew up in the Philippines as the oldest of nine kids. That may be one reason. Caring for others nurse came so naturally to her. She was excited to be accepted as an exchange registered nurse at the Community Hospital Hospital in Chicago South side on the plane ride there. She a fellow nurse Valentina Pacione who she would be working with. It seemed meant to be the two young women became fast friends and lived along with other nurses. They grew close to in a two story townhouse townhouse in walking distance of the hospital. It was sort of like a dormitory there. They met another Filipina nurse Corps Zone on Moreau. Who went by the name Cora and other nurses from the US including Meena Joe Schmo Maryanne Jordan? Pamela Wilkin Gloria Jean. Davy and Patricia Matuzek also known as Pat a photo published in the Chicago Tribune in two thousand sixteen show show the women huddled together laughing as though at an inside joke as they posed with a school of nursing flag. They all have short dark work. Well coiffed hair skirts or dresses that stopped just above their knees and bright smiles the caption beneath the photo reads joy away for life another image above the words all dressed up shows the nurses out of uniform ready for a night on the town they look stylish in that nineteen sixties way with their lips topped with shades of Red Lipstick. It's difficult to fathom that all but one of these women who loved each other and caring for their patients would survive beyond their mid twenties on July Thirteenth Eighteenth Nineteen ninety-six Chicago was already making national headlines because of the so-called riots which broke out after police arrested a black man named William Young for armed robbery young. I tried to evade arrest running through the streets yelling that police were trying to kill him around. Two hundred people gathered and started demanding his release. The public outrage started on July twelfth becoming violence and would last for several days before armed guards calmed things down one day into the riots at South Chicago Community Hospital. Silence of another kind erupted but this time there were no protesters or authorities here by to help early. The next morning a shrill please sounded from a window of the townhouse where the young nurses lived. It was the voice of Cora one of the three nurses from the Philippines. They are all dead. They're all dead. I'm the only one alive. She called out for a good twenty minutes before a man walking his dog took notice and contacted. The police. Chicago officers rushed to the scene to find the lifeless bodies of eight young women all ages. Twenty to twenty four in the home based on statements from Cora who had survived by hiding under a bed head and evidence at the scene. Here's what happened. A man in his early to mid twenties broke into the townhouse around eleven the previous night confronting six women who live there using torn up sheets from the beds. She tied them up promising he would only rob them while this was happening. Another nurse returned home. He tied her up to and very quickly. He broke his vow to stop at looting. The place the man assaulted and killed three of the women raping at least one of them then. He moved the remaining hostages to other rooms killing each of them in a different part of the home. The killer eight bound Cora too but as he was moving around the house attacking her housemates she was able to roll herself under the bed. She stayed there trembling and trying to stay silent until shortly before dawn when she was sure. Sure no signs of the man lingered then she moved out from under the bed and broke herself free at that point she must have held out. Hope hope at least some of her housemates still alive but walking from room to room the horror shock and devastation deepened as she found all all eight of her friends bodies it seems they like one woman she had witnessed had died nearly instantly. Soon after the Cook County Coroner's report stated that each young woman had been either stabbed to death strangled to death or both in that report. The coroner called the ordeal quote the crime of the century for the next three days. The killer was on the loose no one knew his name or exactly who they were searching for. Thanks to the witness accounts from Cora however they did have something powerful a detailed physical physical description of the man including distinct characteristics. She said he was a tall white male with hawked skin tattoo that read born to raise hell. The killer must have known he would be caught soon because several days after the massacre he slit his wrists in in a ninety cent per night hotel according to NBC Chicago reports rather than bleed out his death he sought emergency medical care at Cook County Hospital near midnight on July seventeenth. Dr Larry Smith a twenty five year olds. Surgical resident had just to read the description of the case of prime suspect in the newspaper when he arrived. Treat him as Dr Smith washed away. Blood from the man's arm he spotted added the tattooed words on his skin born to raise hell he quickly let fellow staff know that the patient could well be a mass murderer. Once alerted authorities rushed to the hospital and arrested the suspect a twenty four year old drifter named Richard Speck aspects of the trial trial which turned out to be nearly as complex as the murderers were heinous. William J Martin a twenty eight year old Loyola law school graduate was given the task. ASK PROSECUTING SPEC ONE OF CHICAGO'S MOST experienced public defenders fifty-three-year-old Gerald F getty would defend him. Both sides were concerned about press coverage. Potentially tainting matters national papers had sensationalized. The story before SPEC was even arrested with headlined blinds like slaying suspect man on the run featuring his likeness. The prosecutor feared that a major magazine would persuade wade the surviving witness Cora to share her story for a fee money. That could be life changing for her modest income family in the Philippines if her story came out before the trial start. How would they find impartial? Jurors worst case if they couldn't find any it could be argued that a fair trial was impossible. Will inspect could be let go so prosecutors headquartered in Chicago hotels and then apartment keeping her and her kin under round the clock protection and giving them assumed names until the trial getty the defending attorney worried. That publicity would make holding the trial locally in Cook County work against his client case was the talk of the town and everyone seems to want someone to be held accountable stat so even though no criminal criminal trial had ever moved because of a media frenzy before he filed a motion to do just that everyone was surprised according to the Illinois Bar Journal when the prosecution didn't object to move and the trial was relocated one hundred and fifty miles southwest to Peoria with a trial date set for February of the following year. Another interesting challenge involved the newly instilled Miranda warning which you might know as Miranda rights barely a month before the murder of the nurses the Supreme Court overturned the conviction of Ernnesto Miranda for the rape of a teenage girl because it was largely usually based on Miranda's confession in jail just after his arrest. The court ruled that a suspect has to be advised of their right to remain silent and to an attorney or it would violate their Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. That's why to this day. Suspects have to be Miranda's D- Since it was a brand new requirement then police officers and attorneys across the US were adapting to its practice to protect their case against inspect that summer.
