"Happens henry higgins oversee you. What's your version of the was. Well i was always a fan of the band and geffen ended up doing a deal with a cbs sony for the second album and they put out a single and thought that was the wrong single choice. They put out a second single and it was still the wrong choice. So i called up the head of ayana. Muff winwood over sony and just said what the hell you planet why you keep releasing the wrong singles. What's the matter with you. This was the first single. This was the second single. This should be the third single. Get yourself sorted spans amazing anyway. He paid no attention. The story somehow got back to darn david. It also got back to geffen. And around this time i was very successful and a number of the american record companies. Were interested in in me going to work for them. In america and david geffen was one of the people that are doing very very keen on. It tried all sorts of tricks to get to go and work for him. So i did have a great relationship with david. Although he was pissed off with me not join in him and then out of the blue he finally up and said i won't even do the accent but he found out just said a hero founded this band. I am really cheesed off with them. What do you propose. And we came to an arrangement which believe it or not didn't cost a law in fact he was just glad to see the back of them. I agree to pick up the album that they've done which was effectively. What up dog. And we came to some smaller arrangement then with don and david and said al qaeda they knew it was a big fan of super. There's just one thing. I've got to tell you the album's rubbish. We should know what they were expected to know. What was wrong and i said well. Younger helmet is no hits on this record. Which is why you had a program. But we're going to have. It's so let's go through all the songs that you have a bet you you've got a hit somewhere but you just don't even know your sat on it and we went through. All of the demos ally found to likely suspects that they had not recorded for the album and then the next shot came. Which was i want to bring him. Pull out duffy to produce it. Because i think pose very good arm bay producer. He's english but think he's a. He's got great pup. An rv sensibilities so the main dome was obviously shot and upset by it. But i said look. Trust me on this. I think we can end up with a with a pulpit single. I don't think you have at this point. The pop sensibilities which she accepted and we did treks one was Spine the house of love and the other one was the dinosaur fantastic. Those were the two hits we needed. And then we had an album that was ready to go out into the marketplace. What do you think generally speaking is relationship between hit singles and albums it's There are very few bands that have away with not releasing singles and we know who they are massive as they are have been. They are the exceptions to the rule. It is unfortunate that you have to have hits without them. You just not going sell any albums that became more and more so relevant in the seventies eighties and nineties without the hits. You're not going to sell. I mean today albums are not even of any interest in that period where people were trying to sell them. It was hit driven Now it's interesting. I mean you know abandoned. The aces and author company. Wouldn't put us our album for years until they heard what it's all been hit and it wasn't anyway but it was exempt that process. Yeah it's it's quite tough being in a band having having to conform to that process. It's also very tough having to turn up and say to somebody on. Oh you think this baby is perfect. But you'll by actually no perfect we need to. We need to surgically things up brings us neatly into the second of the pieces are gonna pick homepage twitches pace from kin- you sought to About epic just station of Is follow up to songs from the big shah. And i'll just quote some quoted several times in this pace which i remember reading at the time. Meanwhile unusually dave bates had no opinion tool he heard from two since the taw mother hand to them since one thousand nine hundred one when they were nineteen. We've had our ups and downs. Unfinished store on a bunch of downs. So i seem that we're going to go on there. The go their way themselves from then on. I was hooked but not surprised. So this this is fills account of. I think the full year process of insane perfectionism in studio madness that eventually produced sowing the seeds of love et cetera. I mean it's almost like it's it's sort of a. It's one of those eighties tiles. Isn't it of of kind of just spending too. It's like steely. Dan spending three weeks trying to get a kind of hi hat. Sound mark i think you yet again. We mixed our entire album in a week. It's a the oldest is in the time took them to not get a snare drums. I mean is unbelievable. They were the massive one mejias. Tj and you just heard this gaff gaff gaff all day and all night. They'll just trying to get the snow drums. That how'd you remember that experience and in a sense in the eighties. He's very associated with almost overproduction over thinking. Things i mean from this distance time light to how do you look back on a process like that to album. What a waste the time off the money looking back yes. It's incompletely indulgent looking back. It's ridiculous from that the result of doing that. I ended up looking at records again discount. It doesn't really matter. It really doesn't matter. If you analyze. All the great records know the most successful albums that flawed completely floored. And that's fine. I absolutely loved that period of time. It was really hard really tough. I did go to the studio pretty much if it wasn't once a week it'd be once every two weeks and that went on for four years. She yeah yeah and you gotta go in with a smiling face because the loss in you want to do is to be the one the turns up and discuss what the earth a you doing because you got remember that might so much money on the back of songs from the big and and all the The first album they were paying for it themselves. Yes right so. It's really that choice if they want to spend their money that way then that's entirely up to them. There's nothing i can do about them spending their money and it was It was. I mean it was just tortuous. Yeah no not enjoyable. And it's not my favorite.

"This week. It's twelve hops by scott matthews. Who like a lot of people i heard about through illusive which beautiful soul wolverhampton let. Yeah yeah can that be. I wanted to ask about your geographic. Similarities is the the midland temperament particularly suited to a certain kind of musician. People other proactive. Where they come from you know if you were if you were born in manhattan than you're going to play music and approach music differently than you would if you were born in nashville coventry or a lot to do it periods of time. Maybe in a way the lates mid to late sixties and early seventies were all bluster and flurry from the baby boomers. But then round. The corner comes nick. Drake who with muff winwood string parts and stuff like that ends up being you know coming from the same place. Altogether meant thirty years further on. Come scott from the same place as naughty. Hold it because we all influence. We have time to gather influences and when we were young. When i was seventeen i cut. My first record came down to london and quite when i walked into the recording studio. 'cause i was just playing singing as a seventeen year. Who'd listened to what i'd listen to. So that became the blueprint of the way that i could actually make my way through the only parts of my singing. And that's the influences. Grow you change so later on twenty thirty forty years later. The contemporary singers of the time can have a huge study because the availability later on of all these angles of beautiful music. Which would kind of there in the seventies but they were underground and the facility wasn't quite the same. It wasn't that much access to all these other sources of inspiration. I didn't think but. Burt was recorded. In nineteen sixty six. Sixty four davy. Graham all those people why didn i gravitate towards them. I wonder i did. I loved what they did and duffy. Power came out of that school from billy fury and vince eager and all that duffy powers. The guy that became the blue singer. He jumped off the rock thing and so people were making decisions along the way they would. I suppose smashing the atom and going out of the rock world into other things as they went along but the the fine art of actually of subtlety and beauty wasn't quite as easily recognizable when you were seventeen sleeping in the back of a van. This is it. I think the the the personality of those in the midland as linda myself. It's it's different in musicians. You meet musicians from the midland's and there's even to this day there's a a self-deprecation as a quieter pride then you get from maybe places upper north. And there's a i don't know it it's i find this day. It's as you say all the information's out there now. It's all that you can. You can join from anything you want. But still there are. And i'm generalizing then are parts of the uk where it never got there either know and how wonderful that in the late sixties these compilation records where columbia. Cbs would put out a compilation album to give you an idea of what you might get. So there's twelve tracks by twelve different artists united states of america leonard cohen. You know skip fifty whatever it would be you allow. Wow wow would. You would not get without john peel or might raven who was from shropshire goes on.

"Then then you kind of gay more courage in those moments as well that i think all in all those producers that ron mentioned part of their what would has made it successful with each of them in their own way was that they they did Trust what we were doing and none of them at all said okay. I really like you but you know what you need to do. In order to reach a bigger audience is to do such and such and not one of those producers ever said that todd mentions it in the documentary that That he really liked the demos that we had sent to him. He was the only person that that liked them enough to sign just to stick his name on it and to sign the ban but he said he he loved what they were and he just wanted to improve the fidelity of those recordings. So it wasn't kind of changing it Creatively and there was this. You know the same goes for for muff winwood and and giorgio And tony visconti. They you know they all Appreciate what we were doing kinda went with us. In whatever kinda sorta direction we were and they brought in their own their own talents to kinda enhance enhance that but they they not let us follow our creative path that i think that's one thing that we learn from those people is that To be now that we're kind of producing ourselves at an happened for quite a long time is just to be to be able to look at the songs. Were riding in judge them a little bit more dispassionately whether something is really good or not but at the time early on everything you wrote was was genius and then but working with those people they were you know they were cruel in the in the in the good in the good sense of of of saying the right for songs to be able to come up with one. That's that's a good one and we that it's something that we've carried on gin's day. I mean it's ironic. I think that one of the one of your big hit songs as the. When do i get to sing my way. That sort of like win. Do i get to have that sinatra. But when you look at your career you've been the most my weight loss you. You're more sinatra sinatra. I feel like sinatra look. I want to be like those sparks. Kids i want to do what i wanna do. Edgar do you agree with that. Yeah i think. That's i mean. I said the russell i said the why about them is that they keep writing. What seems to be the epa talso. Every every likes of albums like propaganda has a some of it which could be like this. This isn't guys that's also. I like the number one in heaven whether i get sick. My way edith. Psi second better than me. There's all these lights career some asian songs. I like the aspects where it feels. Like i i mean i i think that's that's say i think that's that's more obvious now like It's it's so them. But i think what's nice about sparks. Is that kind of self reflexive. Is that like you know. eh subject. objectively. It would seem to be that way that you'd never compromise To his songs are about the what you would have to do to be a star. I like that. Hey it's chris. With a quick little request for help from the community to take a short survey very short Just want to learn a little more about the audience and make sure that we.

The mother has come and the poke us where we say goodbye to fallen heroes and we've just lost Spencer Davis. So we're GONNA. Fake. Three pieces about sponsor Davis on the home page one by Keith. From sixty five when keep on running is just I think it's just entered the charts at number twenty, two pieces one by Dawn James while net both kind of asking Spencer Davis and of course, the Great Stevie. Winwood the WHO was the singer in the group. That, they're sort of going now in a pop direction all the Spencer Davis Group. Pope. A source of minor scandal among of Rhythm and Blues Efficient I'm. Very curious because easy. The most significant member wasn't the leader of the band Stevie winwood. He reads the various fees run up time he conceded increasing the winds wants to stop Bronx to other areas and he feels very very tied up. Winless any sixteen when keeping running ahead? Tommy. So young an astonishing you look at those those you can find on youtube videos. Before he's a sixteen year old kid who so channeling Otis, redding. Just. Miraculous stuff. Absolutely. Fantastic. I think he was discovered by so when he was literally forty an unbelievable north. And Spencer Davis. Up. To. Wonder. Stevie was playing with his brother Muff was was yeah. That was the whole island connection wasn't that his Chris Blackwell signed Davis Group in the MUFF winwood became like have I and all that. But I mean House TV sign law that when he was like fifty. I mean did you ever encounter Steve Steve Winwood will write about Steve? Winwood when you were in New York for example now I I think I encountered I'd have to look it up because this just happened yesterday i. now on I was GonNa Look I think I've interviewed Spencer Davis I don't know about Stevie. Data. I, don't recall. On. Apparently, they adopted the name Spencer Davis Group purely because Davis. was one that liked doing press so That would actually do. So that's why they were expensive names, Spencer then Muff winwood go into the music business proper because best hey, muffed became an on and Spencer had some involvement in the music business. Moved to California and he tried in vain to keep his career going and reactivating the Spencer Davis Group in some and something executive island records in the seventies was Spencer was was the okay. I thought I thought it was just muff anyway. I think he died in California means basically it in California for many years we've also lost not afraid. We have a great deal on rocks back pages of bounce and but Jose Padilla, who again. So the godfather of chill out and such an important figure in the story of Beta. The Cafe Delmonte Cetera died I think yesterday. So saying goodbye to both those men and we're now. Going to hear from mark about this week's audio interviewee. Yeah. Elvis Castillo being interviewed vitamin sweets again, nine, thousand, nine, hundred, Ninety, eight, four, hundred, five, listen into a clip. He's just finished. He did three nights. I think at the Brixton Academy as a double. Bill with Bob Dylan Mitch that each participating that sets that's very amusing but basically what he's talking about. This album of covers did Kojak variety cover versions of people songs. Mostly recorded with Jerry Sheriff. Jim Kelly James Burton not sort of valley legendary bunch of session musicians and you know he he talks about choosing songs. How he finds the originals meant him and so forth you talk very interestingly about other people's color versions. He he's he's far from aloneness. He example much prefer Cilla Black's version of backtracking David's anyone that our heart to deal more ex original, which he's not any person say that either I'm. Back cracks very, very peanut. So one point sweeping. ASK ME IN A. Have you made too many records.

"It was Spencer Davis when they recorded that song. You haven't mentioned that weight. The only one I'd let David Lee Roth time last week was telling me All very confused. It is risky. If Gina it's not confusing yourself kissing on Steve would would. I don't know anything about Spencer Davis. And he's the one that died. I just told you about Spencer Davis. He was 81. He formed the band Davis Group. They had three hits with Steve Winwood singing So you're telling me after What you're telling me here is as usual. You don't listen to a thing. No, I just think you're hung up on Steve Winwood, and he didn't even die. You're the one who keeps bringing up. Steve would now we've got a texture asking. Did Sam Elliott dy? No mite is Emilia? Did you watch the that ran during the World Series for No, because it was during the world's No. I found it too confusing. I couldn't. I couldn't want watcher that was too confusing. I thought, What is this? Is this an ad for beef? Wasn't it? It was an ad for Joe Biden. It wasn't a never beef because if it's Sam Elliott, I'm thinking it's beef. Is it Biden? He's what's for dinner. Is that what they you've got? You've got the calming soothing Speaking to the seniors, voice of Sam Elliott telling him to vote for Joe, but I'm confused. Does he want us to vote for Joe Biden? Nor does he want us to eat beef? Yeah. Both actually That's confusing. I think, with Sam Elliott ever in a band I'm just wondering why you don't think he did. I said, I heard a little bit of that Add and he didn't sound well. Sam Elliott is older. Here's oldest Spencer Davis. Spencer Davis was 81 when he died in Los Angeles, Gina Spencer Davis died in Los Angeles. He was 81. Let's see. 76 Sam Elliott, seven. Oh, Here's a picture of Steve Winwood and his brother Muff Winwood. Why do you have to get the name off? Now? That's confusing to me. You think my office is real name or a nickname? I don't know. Let's look, it could be a simple as his parents hated him. Oh, yeah, Here's. Here's why it's muff because his real first name is Mervyn. Mervyn like the story. That's a really lame I can't go by Mervyn! Mervyn. Just call me Mum. Call me Mum. I'm prone to accidents. And my name is Mervyn. So call me, Ma. You know, I muffed it his way. Ah, well, anyway, Steve and Steve Winwood, one of the great voices of all time, I think, Is he still really stuff? No, but muff was named after because now I've gone down. Oh, I almost said that I probably shouldn't have gone to the low. Don't just What is that? What's wrong with that? TV character called Muffin, The Mule, a British TV character. That's what you do. "Who was not the singer or front man. The reason, according to band member Muff Winwood, Steve's brother. Is because Spencer was the only one who enjoyed doing interviews. So the guys in the band figured that if they called the group, the Spencer Davis group, the rest of them could stay in bed. And let him do the interviews. Along the way. They Spencer Davis played in a band called The Saints with a bass player by the name of Bill Perks, and Bill Perks changed his name to Bill Wyman. When he joined the Rolling Stones and listen to this. He dated and performed with A singer and a keyboard player, Christine Perfect. Who later took her husband, John McPhee's name. And joined Fleetwood Mac. In 1963. Brothers, Steve and Muff Winwood. We're performing in a Birmingham. England pub. And Spencer Davis saw them convince them to perform with him. And then they had a string of tapped in hits beginning with keep on running in 1966, and then it continued with Give me some loving in 1967. And Where is it Here? The hits were all song by Steve Winwood and many people actually thought was Spencer Davis. The Wynnewood Brothers left the group in 1967. Steve form traffic with Dave Mason and Jim Capaldi. Brother Muff became a successful record. Company executive Spencer Davis continued the group until 69. He reformed it in 73 after he'd moved to California. Thank you for the information out. 1963 Spencer Davis guitar, a Stevie Winwood keyboards and guitar Stevie Win with one of the greatest talents of all time as brother Muff Winwood in a Peter York their best known songs, of course. Was give me some loving a man and then you know Stevie Winwood left in 67 informed trafficking. You remember all this right? But I got to tell you that music and I bring it back. And that's where my son who does that does his debut this weekend at a Pennsylvania Michael, and it's all the Steve you, Avon. It's all about Jimi Hendrix. And certainly Phillips, Ace, You know his guitar mentor. But I take all these the music from the sixty's and I tell Mike, you gotta play this stuff, man, because it's going to see new, right. And my right. This is it. That was a great time as I speak to my boomer brothers and sisters. Great time for music and so arresting piece of Spencer Davis. Hehe Jo on the radio, you know? And Joseph Delia Good Morning and Albert. Good morning, have you Job. Well done. That was thank you. You look, Malik and God forbid, I think Are we racist that we put that on the job? Did they do something in the friend of that? That was a Disney film that that Yes, that was from the lines. They're disclaimer. Disclaimer. Don't know there might be now now that we did that. So you have to watch out. I don't know. Oh, my Lord. Actually, you know what? There was. I was reading about it. They were saying the hyenas were racist in that movie because we'll be Goldberg and Cheech Maren are the voices. And they said, Oh, well, you're making them seem like they're of the streets. So you know, as no minorities are the in the shadow area that they live in, so yeah, Yeah, well, it's way way way do politically correct now, But, you know, we're mourning the death of this police officer in Houston. They got shot last night. Chechen killed yesterday. Shot and killed, you know, And that's what I always say. And you know, so probably a family in the police force. And I don't really like to say his name a lot because I like to protect his confidences because I know a lot of folks listen. But he's a young kid doing a great job. You know, on the police force in New Jersey and was so proud of him and you worry, you worry. And now Big Mike, my man, Big Mike had worked for me for years loved that Kidman and shout out to his parents did such a great job. Being like, and he wants to be a cop. I want to be a cop, Joe writes. I told Jimmy O. Neela, Ray Kelly and then Commissioner Bernard Kerik and everybody and they were all saying, You know, this kid looks like a cop in on. Sure enough, when he sent me a picture of himself make that In uniform and a local police department in Jersey makes me so proud. But I worry. I worry if you go on and this is why you can't defund the police. I mean, this is a glaring example. While you can't deep on the police. What? Because, you know Maybe need maybe a couple of the shows of talking about this, and I appreciate it, and I'm off. This is all you by the way. This is all you thank you When? When Commissioner Bratton tweet says out of treats that out about the death of a Houston police officer, you're on you're on it, and I see it And I love it And that you would you care enough? Because no one they don't care that keep the funding the police in New York's city. How do you do on the police? How do you take a billion dollars away from the police? And then see the crime rise. Explain it to me logically, and then they don't answer it. And the press leaves it alone. Except for the New York Post, that press leaves it alone and thank God The post has the courage to step up Everything like afraid of these politicians. And it's that wrong, and I know it's just frustrating. Don't get me started. I loved, you know, I'm a Jersey guy. But the one thing in Jersey don't care who you are. Jersey of. It's little old me of his Bruce Springsteen or Jon Bon Jovi or Queen Latifah. Shaquille O'Neal from North or You want to Goto. You want to go to New York City, you know. You don't mean you're from Jersey. The goal. I remember bedded that six county Hey, when they are going to go to New York now I can't send my kids. I'm afraid to send my kids to school in New York. I'm afraid to go to New York City because they defunded the police. That's the reason and you when I know the logical common sense of it all we sit there and we go well, you can't have fun the police because then Criminals who need consequences. And Bill Bratton. By the way, Commissioner Bratton called this like a year ago. He said, Do not let dude you can't let these people back out with this whole cash bail. You can't do it. You can't do it. A bail reform. It's a nightmare and the politicians what are they thinking of? What's the mindset of that? And what's frustrating is these people keep getting voted in in New York. What do you and that's why I don't understand how somebody give over Joe Biden you vote for Joe Biden you provoked you made you will vote for the Communist Party. I'm telling you right now, and that's why forgive me if I get overzealous these next couple weeks, But and I don't and stop with all I can't stand Donald job. I was personality. Stop it. You have no choice. You want to vote for America or you're going to vote for the Communist Party in China. That's where we are. Their own. And if we didn't have President Trump in there, just like a bull in a China shop. I personally love it. I'm sorry. I absolutely love it when he says the wrong thing and every walk, fabulous 60 minute interview. This's great. That's why President Lesley Stahl starts um, my guys she starts idea of you with any walks out of here that every yesterday I love it. When I hear that this has got the guts to do it. The presses so slanted. I'm so tired of it. I can't watch one after another, and it's just and I don't care if you're a liberal. You don't understand that you have a mental problem..

"I was saying it was it was a bad joke I was saying was a good name for the album. Yes their name. Your I get I got the joke. It's not really a joke about proud of. The producer for their album was Steve WYNN woods brother Muff winwood. I Want I wanna make sure everyone got that Steve winwood has a brother name. MUFF winwood. Awesome. His real name is Mervin which is not any weirder. When Did. He guys. This album was produced by Steve winwood brother. Do you think Muffin pick were best friends I hope so. Like a children's movie about dogs getting along. Yeah. Come on. Our friends left us. We've got to make our way across country. Muffin pick was made in two, thousand and five, and one of the dogs is forced by Josh Hartnett. Some reason. So, uh. Say. Oh. Yeah. Murph Lynnwood. So so-and-so swing was their first single and it reached number eight on the UK singles chart at number four on the US high one hundred like I said. During a tour of the US not long after Bob Dylan's La and invited Mark Knopfler and pick withers to play on his next album. That album now. Yeah. That album is the somewhat infamous long train coming. which was Dylan's nineteenth studio album and was the first one dylan made after his conversion to Christianity. All the songs were about Jesus. Oh Yeah. So the album the album was actually fairly well received people like the music but fans were, let's say perplexed. The lyrical content of the album. Pre or post electric. This way. His pretty post electric. Tony's there's just so much I. Don't know about Bob Dylan. Yeah Yeah. This is definitely one of them. Yeah. I mean, what do you mean uncle? Robert has things. Don't go Robert I went down a rabbit hole of like. Was On tour he he was feeling very depressed. Somebody threw a silver cross onto the stage when ninety picked it up and put it in his pocket, and then he was like that night, the physical embodiment of Jesus Christ visited me in my hotel room and like and talk to me, and then I, walked out in the morning a changed man and people were like, okay, that's weird but George. Up So. So so they played on that then marked was like like call this age it was like. All these songs are about Jesus. I don't. Like the size are good. I could play them but this is really weird. So. Yes. So so then after that, when did he go electric? Michael, I don't know. I'm now famously at the like Was the newport. Was a moderate power to Newport full festival I think Newport folk I wish I knew what year was whenever that was yeah. There's like ninety, two, ninety, three. No that's right. Yeah, I think it's when he released the song must be Santa Claus. Right that's when he went. Before that, it was all stick. That's when he wants Sleigh Bell. That's right. That's right. That's right. Yeah also the way you say he went electric is like imagine him turning into a robot like I am now electric. Electric. Is. Goes Electric now? No no no. No unfortunately I wish. I have just been misinterpreted. Well I stand corrected. So, Okay. So then after that Derek Straits released, some more albums had a few more hits like Romeo and Juliet, and private investigations, but I want to jump ahead. Tonight and eighty five. When Dire Straits released their fifth studio album called brothers in arms which included songs like. Money for nothing. So far away and walk of life. So money for nothing hit number one. One hundred. The album was the first CD TO SELL A MILLION COPIES The for CD. Copies, and is credited with helping popularize the format. Also the song. Brother and arms from the album. Is generally considered the first CD single. Since it was given away at concerts that they did. And it was on the city so. For CD single. Was Not commercially sold, but it was a single on a CD. Percents amazing for single. So around that time dire straits. Live aid. Where they did a ten minute version of sultans of swing. God. And it's actually it's actually awesome and yeah, I'm going listen to it right after this crowd the crowd goes nuts for it. It's great they in the I'm guessing they were at the London show. Yes. I think. So yeah, and they do money for nothing obviously instinct comes out and does the sting part Oh that's right stink. Yeah. Yeah. So that's awesome. Yeah I didn't WANNA go too deep into money for nothing is. Not about money for nothing but right? Yeah. They also like they they were like, Hey, I, they were in the studio I guess and like sting came in. LONDON GATT. Hanging around with each other. And they're like, Hey, we wanna play the song we had We have called money for nothing and they apparently play for him and he was like. Out of a bitch you is. GonNa be big. He was like Oh, my God. This is great and they're like, well, it's so good. Why did you six some stuff on it like more being jerks and daring him? He's like you know what I will fine I will and. That's how that you're on yeah. But literally was like that was not planned for the song he he literally just was like, okay I'll do it and he went into the studio and just like saying bunch and they're like, all right. We're GONNA put it on the song. So as a famous story and that's why he has songwriting credit because he saying. To the tune of don't close to me, I want my MTV. So there you go That's cool. Yeah. So So the band I broke up in nineteen eighty, seven mark knopfler just wanted pursue solo stuff for side projects and did things like Lara rate with Chet Atkins on an album. So the break-up was mostly mutual friendly. In the years following the band would reform occasionally you charity events and things like that. So. Everything was was pretty peachy keen but then nine, hundred, ninety, one, the band reformed and released an album. None of the singles from that album broke the top twenty. The ban went on torn by all accounts. It was a miserable experience. The magic was gone and moaned band broke up in nineteen, ninety five and they were all kind of mad at each other and eighty five. Yeah. Yeah. They basically were like we should have stayed broken up this was. Like totally depressed for four years. Yeah. I'm sure they had peaks and valleys. But by the end, they were just Kinda like this was a mistake and this is all for nothing. because. They only released one more album money for nothing right but they only released one more album in time like I said, none of the none of the singles broke the top twenty and they just kinda petered out..

Hey everybody. Welcome back it's time for story behind the story. We did this song come from. Well I'M GONNA I'M GONNA. Tell me now bar. I'M GONNA. Tell you right now while you're actually not wrong Michael I'll get there. All right I'M GONNA, get there and a central one but. So. So someone's a swing was released in May nine, hundred, seventy eight and it hit. A peak to number four. On the hot one hundred. So release man that who served eight now dire straits was formed in London in one thousand, nine, hundred, seventy, seven, you guys this is nearly it was not long before they had a hit song. All done but they were formed in. London in one thousand, nine, hundred, seven, Mark Knopfler on lead guitar and lead vocals his brother David Knopfler on Rhythm Guitar. Knows all the chords by the way. I'm. Not Trying to make crier saying nothing fancy. John. Man. I'm so bad I'm sorry John Isley on Bass and pick withers on drums. Okay. withers pick the best and They were all friends who are working in around the music scene in London when they formed the band, I did a lot of research. There wasn't exciting like moment they were just like, hey we. Former band and. The idea that I- i-. Dire Straits being British band. It might be one of those things that I always knew but couldn't believe right because they sound. So American. When they play music, which sounds probably like a real ugly American thing to say. But. There there's something about their music that was like Oh. Yeah. They're from like Detroit or they're from you know wherever Chicago but no, they're from. London. Going sit wherever Chicago is. Wherever she goes. Because they sang that song about the beverly hillbillies. Let's. Let's hold on. Let's get there. Let's get there. Well, I do. Yeah. I mean to your point Rachel I don't know what I mean like obviously when people saying they don't have like an accent. Bite for whatever reason the Beatles stones I mean they just sound. They do have a little bit where they just sound. He sounds like he's from Detroit when he sings at least when he talks about definitely has a British accent but yeah, he does he has no hint of an accent Definitely had like very American influences. I think the kind of the kind of means they were playing. Was Very, you know American heavy but yeah, they're from the only. The only other band. I the only other band I can think of. Herman's hermits where these guys from where he side come on. Her insurance could not sound more. Literally, there's a law a sounding. That's right. It's called the hermits. Very American influences. Shirley Bassey. Tom Jones. That's right. Elton John. Elton John Herman's hermits moments hermits. Or just Herman it was just. Song God save the Queen. That's right. And the sex pistols. So Okay. So there are friends I said that. Okay. So this song is somewhat based on a true story. Mark Knopfler was watching jazz band in a dive bar in in London and south London. And at the end when the band announced their names as the sultans of swing knopfler found the grandiose name in such humble surroundings amusing and inspired him to write the song. So it saying that it's somewhat based on a true story. They just said your explanation of what the story of the song was at the beginning of this episode. So this is based on a true story right but I mean, he didn't I don't think he knew Guitar George and Harry, but I'M Sure just that that one thing of this, like you know that's a lot in the name of the band and and they were jazz band. You make up a couple of names. But yeah. So again, he the very humble surroundings of this. You know I mean he does he he also kind of hands. The band wasn't that great. But he was he was listening to it and they know. You know I don't. Know I didn't see anything on that of them being like, Oh, by the way we're the you know anyone being like where the real songs swing. So I don't know they may not because I mean if they were like all due to listen to jazz, right, it's actually not impossible. They just never heard this song. And went to their graves presumably never never knowing. That that there was a song about them Or if they were in the record store one day and then just picked up this record and saw that there is. A song with their name on it. Oh, that's pretty cool. What a we're coincidence. Hey Guitar George come check this out. And then they put it down and went to the jazz section. Anyway. We're the Tommy Dorsey wreck. Psalms swing though like does sound a little bit like. Like a wedding band in nineteen ninety eight Oh yes. One hundred percent. Yeah. Really capitalizing on that six months where everybody loves swing dancing to open for up for the big bad blue daddy's. Dream they were like, yeah. Yeah. They were like we had we one night we opened for squirrel nut zippers and it really. Just saying the names of those bands like. Parents weren't. We've talked about. It really happened folks wasn't a fever dream. We all had some reason they played the Squirrel Nut Zippers on MTV I. saw it. Don't tell me it didn't happen 'cause I. saw it happen. So anyway. Play Music on MTV. They did. They did once time I saw don't tell me didn't happen Michael. I saw with my own eyes. They. Beach MTV and they played the scroll nuts. Players had a budget girls danced on plywood on a beach. This is what we did in the ninety s folks been over this before but I even I was there and I still can't believe it. So So the soldier swing the song not the band. was included on the band's Fi I five song demo. Demo. was turned down by multiple labels. And they brought it to a BBC DJ named Charlie Gillet just ask for advice. But Gill listen to tape love the demo so much. He began playing songs with swing on his radio show called Honky Tonk. So we're. there. He played it. Yeah. Maybe it's like this is about me Oh, sure. Sure. Sure Great. Are you GONNA play it? Then find it's about you right I mean, my name is George Cosmic. Guitar doors and like no one else. That's what you want to say. That's fine. STAGE NAME IS DJ Charlie's. So the exposure of having that song played on the BBC lead dire straits to quickly be signed to British Label Vertigo. The. Re recorded the songs from the Demo along with few others and released their first album called dire straits in February of Nineteen, seventy eight. That's a good name. It is good name by that's the other thing too. I try to find like sachets and they were just like, yeah. I don't know because they had some other name like cafe racers or something and then they were at a friend's house and like a friend of a friend was like how about dire straits and they're like, yeah, that's a good name and. Like, all story. But it is a good name for Van. Was Gonna I was saying it was it was a bad joke. I was saying was a good name for the album well that to. Their name got. I got I got the job It's not really a joke proud of. The producer for their album was Steve WYNN woods brother Muff winwood. Eyewitness sure everyone got that Steve winwood has a brother name Muff winwood..
