"Now and now it's like non every you're gonna be blown away. She is like. I literally was watching it being like. Oh this is just unquestionably one of the greatest living actors currently doing something that is so electric to watch to watch her acting against a young actor whose name is hannah. I'm binder who is lorraine newman's daughter and this is her first acting job so it is literally a two hander between this young new actor and jean smart who is just incredible and the chemistry between them is electric. Jokes are great. And it's a fucking great show. It's about Jean smart is a kind of old school. Joan rivers. Phyllis diller style comedian. Who's doing a residency in vegas. Telling kind of her same old jokes and this young comedy writer comes into her world and completely kind of up they both kind of upset each other's kind of paradigm and it is. It's terrific. it's really funny. Incredibly kind of well acted and beautiful. I really dug it. I think it's worth watching and it's and it's a half hour and it's great you know what's interesting about that is i have a friend who was that for. Joan rivers tristan. Yes and so. She had written a post the other day she was like i am really nervous to watch his show because it has nothing to do with me but i feel like such a connection to this world and she said you know truthfully she's like i like it captured a one hundred percent in my experience. I mean obviously there are differences. But she's it was interesting to see like how they could capture that so well knowing that that's not really the trajectory of either one of their of any of their careers interesting. But if you've never heard of sharply and worcester. I i'll do yourself a favor. It's some of the funniest two person. Comedy stuff audio comedy stuff like you can get it on spotify. It's great gas station. Dogs is an album that you should probably start with and it will. It's so so funny. They're amazing but he wrote this book. That is a wonderful. I don't wanna spoil too much of it. But it's kind of writing and how he got his how he kind of fell into it and everything from writing on like from slam magazine all the way to monk and then writing bigger films and and things like that but there is a chapter in it. That made me laugh so much. Because he's such a good music guy and when you show he'd have. These great bands turned me on to so many different people. Well jon wurster. Who does his. Who does as you mentioned john. Lewis who's who does a lot of stuff with sharp ling is the is. A drummer is a prolific drummer. Was the drummer in superchunk guessing. Time in a number of other bands and so they have a great partnership in this. But there's a chapter in this book. I read the whole thing in like really like two days. Because thomas can you read it. And and i felt pressure that if i didn't read it right away i wouldn't read it then i didn't want to feel like i'm taking too long with so i just like our i down this book and it was so fun to read. But there's a chapter in it about how he trying to figure out how he fits into this world of entertainment and he wants to get any trying to doing he auditions for the new monkeys and the story about trying to get into the new mile. You might have seen him on the marvelous, Mrs Mazel or search party. You know what? You haven't seen him in the Elena the 2001 HBO miniseries Band of Brothers. Why not Because Tom Hanks fired him the day before he was supposed to start filming. For having what Tom Hanks apparently called dead eyes and almost 20. There was just one piece of good news after another. And then And then all of a sudden I got a call from my agent, saying that You've got to get down to London immediately. It was the day before I was supposed to start filming. Get a phone call from assistant in my agent's office telling me There's been a problem. Tom Hanks has seen your audition tape, and he's having second thoughts. He thinks you have dead eyes and like, what's going through your mind In that moment when you hear that I just I didn't know what to make of it because it was such a small role, and it was a character who said very little. And it wasn't an emotional scene. So it wasn't like it wasn't a thing where I could really, you know, pop my eyes out and fill them with emotion. You know anything, any acting choice I could have made in my real addition to emphasize my eyes would have also been utterly disqualifying a sparse how distracting would be in the scene. So, basically you had this role book You've been hired to play this character Zelinski, and you're like told your family about it. And like everybody, anybody, everybody and everybody and every passer by Tom Hanks is gonna direct me. I have lines. Uh yeah. And I was still paid which some people here that because they're in the contracts were signed and everything you know Some people hear that And they say, Well, what do you complaining about? You got paid for it. But I would have given up the money to have the getting The role is the harder part. When you're young actor, you can find some money somewhere there other ways to make money. It's Hard to get those. You know, when you're starting out to get those early credits that then you know, sort of legitimize you and, um yeah, And then and then it was, you know, was over a year later, when the finally started airing on HBO and And when you look at the scene, there's even fewer lines like the final edit..

But this guy this deadbeat Um, but anyway, it was a lot of fun, Tremendous fun. So when in fact Around this time of year. I remember it was just a couple of weeks before Christmas juggler. He called me and said, Hey, I'm gonna kill your character. Let me tell you how it's so funny and he and it was very funny, but he proceeds to pitch me the scene. What is the great gravy train for an actor in Hollywood being on the stick up for Chuck? Lori, too? It's not like to some sick of Mama's a wrecking ball. That wind came back like I don't know. On a Monday from from a weekend I said, I've got this great idea. We're gonna kill album. All the writers immediately laughed because it was so absurd. They assumed it was a joke. Um, because they had sort of told me they didn't really have a man to write for. You know, it's very much a woman show but a couple of male actors on the show, but they were all played a sort of Spineless and this album character was quite a rough and company guy, you know, blue collar A And you know a man's man, if you will, whatever the hell that means Tuesday. Um, And so it was a lot of fun to play and together as I was saying, the writers did assume he was kidding. And he just had this up epiphany and play okay, but it pays it paved the way for unlike altering zeitgeist of the show for me the mob businesses, maybe when I could not be happier in hindsight. That Chuck made that maddening decision. That's a great way to put it, though. I mean the zeitgeist show this really marvelous Mrs Mazel has punched through. And a cheap sort of an altitude that frankly, I mean, Mom, don't get me wrong. It's a great show and and it's you know, it's still on and Laurie's great But wow, As I say, Mazel, it's achieved sort of an international profile. It's just really cool Kevin to see how successful that show became, and it's a It's a streaming show. It's not even on network television. It's very strange. The whole thing is so real to all of us even going into season for, um remember shooting the first couple episodes and Tony shallow. Saying to me who's gonna watch this show honestly other than Jews and the Upper West Side of Manhattan who the hell is gonna watch the show? You know when 3 19 year old Asian or African American women, young women Rush me and my better half of the restaurant saying, quoting lines from the show. It is a little surreal when you think outside of the very narrow Sort of myopic view of this show, you know about a Jewish family, but the truth is at the center of it. Is this exceptionally strong woman? To reinvent herself and on top of the wardrobe in the music and everything else, But I think that is a driving force for young women all over the world. Yeah. "Episode actually has been on my mind since our very first season and it combines both my passion and my career because today we talk about fashion and film and we actually thought this was a particularly fitting episode with which to launch season three seeing as it's February. WNYC which is an eventful month for fashion in film. We are currently in the midst of course of the International Fashion Week Circuit and the Ninety Second Academy Awards Air. Just this is past Sunday February ninth. Not that I've seen many of the Oscar contenders this year. But let's be honest. I mainly tune in to see what everyone is wearing. Yes exactly the same. Although I did watch rock man last night which I know I loved. You're so so on costumes. Were amazing. Customer agree on that yet and we actually got to see a couple of them in in person when we were in L. A.. Recently which was very cool but the Oscars is definitely one of fashion industries. Highlights of the year. You know. I think it's safe to say that. What celebrities as where to this star centered? Event is just as exciting as the awards. Show itself and I'm sure many of our listeners will be joining us in watching the pre show coverage where where we will get an up close and personal look at all the glamour shirt to be on display on this year's red carpets and speaking of red carpet April you and I both. It's had our very first red carpet experience last month when we attended the iheartradio podcast awards. Yes and I will have to. I have to say getting ready for that stuff. Takes a really long time. I had no idea. We're inheriting makeup literally. Our it was very fun. Yeah it it was very fun so you're going to hear a little bit more on our first fashion history mystery of the season where we talk about all things red carpet including our favorite picks from this year's red carpet and an interview with Bronwyn cosgrave. That really detailed the gowns color and fabric for the enquiring reader actress Norma talmadge was featured so often in the fashion section in a photo play that she was even named fashion editor for a short time in nineteen twenty by emphasizing the dress and appearance of these early film stars. "So the number one way for sure I would say movies. I remember, I don't know if I've told the story on the show before, but I was living in Amsterdam for a little while in my twenties. And I met this dude from Norway, and he was like completely fluent in English. Like, he spoke as if he had grown up in New York like interesting the accent and everything, and I was like have you lived in the states, and he's like I've never been to an English speaking country, and he wasn't even a good student. He didn't like study English in school or anything. He just watched movies like movies constantly all the time. And that's how he learned his fluent English. So work south really interesting, and yeah, you see that in. Yeah. Definitely in plate like in Norway and Scandinavia different parts of Scandinavia. People seem fluent basically a hundred percent. I went and. Yeah, that is amazing. If you're because it's really like being immersed in English in a sense, your entertainment is immersed in English for. For sure for sure I just want sort of out of the box recently as far as movies go and watched an action movie called den of thieves, and I absolutely loved him. You know, just the heist film with a bunch of shooting. And I, you know, I appreciate the action genres, and I know a lot of listeners like action. So I recommend den of thieves. I love it. I love it. So that is our number one recommendation. So that is that number one and number two is right in that. Same order is watching an English Serey or multiple series. And the reason I like this personally is that you get like I said before you can kind of get invested in the story and the characters over a longer period of time. So I feel like your fluency kind of carries out over time. So it's kind of it becomes a bit of a project to come back to the show all the time and spreads spread it out in a sense rather than just two hours of intense immersion. It's over weeks. True. Yeah. And it's easier to consume if it's like twenty minutes on like, the good place or something older like cheers or Frazier. I still like those old ones too. And so it's easy to fit in like even on a lunch break, you could watch an episode. But then also with these prestige television sort of series like the one I mentioned the leftovers or. Like, the very first one the sopranos stuff like that. You get to know these characters and how they talk, and they do have like sort of catchphrases or quirky things that they say all the time. And so I think this little bit of repetition along with getting really comfortable with how they talk that accent. And you just understand more and more at every episode, and you do forget, you're learning at all because you get so like you said like invested in the story and what's happening. That's so true. That's so true. Does. I mean, I know a lot of people like friends, and that's great. It's awesome. If you guys like friends, we love to recommend other options to kind of branch out from that for sure I know on another episode. We mentioned the marvelous MRs Mazel that is only auch. Yup. I love it. I just finished watching a British one called the flowers, which is also amazing Livia Coleman is in it. She won best actress for the favorite. She won the. Oscar this year, and she's she can do comedy drama everything. And this is I would say a drama. It's a mixture of comedy and drama, so the flowers. Yeah. Something is one that. I like is the good doctor. So the acting is not amazing. I feel like what I've despite what you just said Jessica about the hang award that the person one I almost feel like with so many kind of series out there. Now, I feel like the acting is maybe not as good. But maybe kind of the story lines are interesting. You know, they're kinda there's there's a certain quality to a lot of shows. And it's not always in the acting. Sometimes it is though, but I like the good doctor. So it's a story of a doctor that has autism. Really interesting story. So that's one that I would recommend you guys. Yeah. I think because the good doctors a network show. Right. So we're talking like ABC NBC. Those. Yeah. That's right. So, but you are definitely following. You're coming back every week in your following a story line. So it's essentially it's the same thing. Yeah. That's awesome. And then so those are the top two, I sure and I really like the sixth one that he gave where you make yourself speak out loud. Every day you have to listening to half of it. Right.
