Emmys 2020: Who won big at the first virtual ceremony
"Emmy's happened last night. The last couple days I want to say like through last week, there was some of the you know, technical Emmys and Creative arts Emmys and they've all been I've been seeing like the results of those, but these were the actual Actors and actresses and shows and You know the hole, but it was It was virtual, right? Yes. So every I think that they They actually put a show together to do the Emmys. Um But the other ones that I think we're just getting. I'm sure there was some kind of ceremony on zoom or something. But I don't know that those ones were televised. They might have been. No, I mean, look, I didn't I Maybe you mentioned it. Maybe I read. Maybe I didn't. It was a shock to me at whatever time nine o'clock last night when I started seeing the news roll through, and I was like Emmys. You talked about it a little remember? It was, you know, because Jimmy Kimmel was hosting and so there was some talk, but I play police. Li forgot about it and the whole thing so I didn't see one second of it. Oh, yeah, no. And, frankly, these days because of you, Khun DVR things I'd never sit and watch things in real time anyway, so Because who wants us in just to put the others on When I organize S O. The big winner last night is Schmidt's Creek. It's not the name of the show, but right The clothes. They were saying it on TV because I did see a clip after that. They were saying the word, but I don't want you don't want no trouble with you. Just don't I considered it. You know, it spells have pointed out that every time they say it, they had to put the actual words upon these people can read it with. Oh, right. You see, It's not what you think There's an extra tea and they've thrown at sea in there, okay? So I'm just gonna say Schmidt's creek because I'm with you. You know, whatever. I just guess Monday's gonna be hard enough, right? Yeah. What's our theme? We don't want to. We don't want no trouble. That's right. I keep forgetting the better. That's our theme. Well, since I should write that down here, put it up with all my little, you know, daily affirmations. So the Emmys was virtual And Schmidt's Creek swept in all this is it's actually quite amazing because it has never won an Emmy in any other season. Currently they're grand total of Emmy's up till this season when they took him all zero. It doesn't It seems to be a show that we used to have a million of them. And not that, you know. Ahh, that name in particular is obviously means that's a cable show, right? I mean, it's just It's not your Big four or whatever. But it's just a sitcom, and it's fun and it's and it's not that You could miss it, and you wouldn't care. But you could also sit down and watch four episodes on any given night and be like, Wow, that was light. It was easy is their thread that you follow along with? Yes, it's the family that has moved. Uh, I won't tell you the whole story. But yes, there's a story behind Why they're in this motel and Right off super rich. It's only that I find a just a life. Oh, poor things. Is that a Netflix show? It doesn't even say here. Oh, yeah, It's a Netflix. Yeah. So they won nine Emmys for their sixth and final season, including best comedy Siri's. It's a new record for most wins in a single season for a single comedy. Marvellous. Mrs. Mazel had had the record. They said it in 2018 with eight and then they got eight more in 2019. And I don't know if this means that Mrs Mazel was just completely shut out. Oh, end because all the comedy awards seemed to have gone to Schmidt's Creek. The cast swept the acting categories, and that's the first time a comedy Siri's has done that Eugene Levy and Catharine O'Hara won best actor and actress and Daniel Levy and Annie Murphy, one supporting actor and actress. And they're saying here that's never happened. So congratulations to them. Daniel Levy also set a record for most wins for an individual in a seat in a single season with four because he also got trophies for writing and directing and Best comedy Siri's because he's a producer. So he actually technically that four Just for himself personally. Zero m. He's heading into the night. They never had any kind of incredible. But I guess you know, with my cell dominating in the last couple of seasons would be hard for anyone to rack up any numbers. They also set a record last night at the Emmys for most wins by black actors, including Regina King and Yaya Abdul Mateen. Ah, The second for watchman. Ouzo Duba for Mrs America. And Zendaya for euphoria. She's also the youngest Emmy winner in this category. Outstanding lead actress for drama. Stop me. If you have pulled any audio for any of these things in particular, I pulled some furs and die a winning it Isa from Oakland, apparently which is why we wanted to make sure we've got her on. So here she is reacting. Yeah, it is her reacting and she says a couple of things, but just there's there's a party behind her. So I know that I just want to say thank you to the TV academy to all the other incredible women in this category. I I admire you all so much. This is, um Oh, this is pretty crazy. Didn't really crying, Okay? I know this feels like a really weird time to be celebrating. But I just want to see that there is hope in the young people out there. I know that our TV show doesn't always feel like a great example of that. But there is hope in the other people, and I just want to say to all my peers out there doing the work in the streets. I see you. I'm are you I Thank you. And yeah, thank you so, so much. Um, this is thank you. And, of course, is through zoom. So right. Well, everyone was zooming in S O. She's the youngest any award winner for outstanding lead Actress for drama. So congratulations, Twos and Dia. And I guess I assumed that that party was happening in Oakland flatter know about that, But I do know she's she's pretty accomplished for such a young lady heard she's stars in Great America, the greatest showman Ohio. I want to say the great American hero. I don't know what she's in the great American. Ah, SOS and Dia. Congratulations to her. Eddie Murphy and Maya Rudolph one for Saturday Night Live, I guess for guest appearances and Ron Cephas Jones for this is us Eso Black actors Big night of record for most wins by black actors at the Emmys last night. Oh, okay heads and there's Courtney Cox, Courtney's there. Of course I'm here. We live together. You do know there's a lag. Yeah, We've been roommates since 1994. But I don't know is it is this live TV? Both of you very well done. It's super cute. But the awkward, you know, three seconds of science, retired ruins everything before it does. We're very well acquainted with the awkward three seconds of silence, ruining everything. That is the life we're living right now. Anyway. Jennifer Aniston and Courtney Cox and Lisa could row whether she just jetted home after 60 ft. Away appearance on the show the awards, though, as they handed these out So I'm not sure how exactly this happened. If only the people who were actually getting the awards had people in has Matt suits outside their homes. No, it seems that Ah, they had everybody on standby like you'd have somebody in front of your house and has been with the award, but you might not win. Fashion & Film
"Episode actually has been on my mind since our very first season and it combines both my passion and my career because today we talk about fashion and film and we actually thought this was a particularly fitting episode with which to launch season three seeing as it's February. WNYC which is an eventful month for fashion in film. We are currently in the midst of course of the International Fashion Week Circuit and the Ninety Second Academy Awards Air. Just this is past Sunday February ninth. Not that I've seen many of the Oscar contenders this year. But let's be honest. I mainly tune in to see what everyone is wearing. Yes exactly the same. Although I did watch rock man last night which I know I loved. You're so so on costumes. Were amazing. Customer agree on that yet and we actually got to see a couple of them in in person when we were in L. A.. Recently which was very cool but the Oscars is definitely one of fashion industries. Highlights of the year. You know. I think it's safe to say that. What celebrities as where to this star centered? Event is just as exciting as the awards. Show itself and I'm sure many of our listeners will be joining us in watching the pre show coverage where where we will get an up close and personal look at all the glamour shirt to be on display on this year's red carpets and speaking of red carpet April you and I both. It's had our very first red carpet experience last month when we attended the iheartradio podcast awards. Yes and I will have to. I have to say getting ready for that stuff. Takes a really long time. I had no idea. We're inheriting makeup literally. Our it was very fun. Yeah it it was very fun so you're going to hear a little bit more on our first fashion history mystery of the season where we talk about all things red carpet including our favorite picks from this year's red carpet and an interview with Bronwyn cosgrave. Who is the author of the book made for each other which is an in-depth behind the scenes? Look at the history the of red carpet fashion so the Academy Awards dates back all the way to the nineteen twenties but the first films are being made as far back as the eighteen ninety s so the movies being produced ladies for over one hundred and twenty years you know. I think we should probably preface this episode by saying this is only intended as an overview of very huge topic like Jain enormous topic. Yeah I mean it's so big that we've chosen to focus almost entirely on the relationship between fashion as as it relates to American Hollywood films and for the most part I mean there will be a few exceptions and even by narrowing our discussion. There are still so many fascinating winning stories and players involved with a subject that it is impossible to cover them all in one episode. And that is why we are bringing you to yes and as you said. Casas is a huge topic and there are many different angles which we could look at the intersections of fashion and film. Historically of course the most obvious one is the depiction of fashion in film and that is fashionable clothing as costume worn by characters in support of the visual narrative of any given plot and this fashionable clothing can be worn both in contemporary films. Those intended to be set within the time in which their audience are living now currently when interviewing them and also period films film set in the past so clothing and fashionable clothing at that is one of the most vital production elements in selling link any given period in history it is very central to the quote unquote look of a specific time and place and we have to give many a costume designer props further further historical accuracy over the years but April. I think you would agree that present day fashion is a pretty powerful force and even the best designers have been guilty of implementing unconsciously or not contemporary beauty and fashion aesthetics into their period costumes. So if you look at any number of the westerns from the nineteen sixties for instance instance set in the late nineteenth century. But I can't even tell you how many heating ladies in these films are costumed with bouffant hairstyles eyeliner. They're so good. You know not to mention that these electric colors of their bustle gowns so fashion in film and we're using the term film today because while the majority of the movies were talking about where filmed on film so fashion and film have been inextricably linked since the earliest days of cinema. The I motion picture films were produced at the end of the nineteenth century by the first decade of the twentieth film production had fast evolved into a mass entertainment industry tree. Hollywood obviously as we all know in Los Angeles California was epicenter and the home to over seventy studios and counting by nineteen fourteen and prior to the advent of film. Theatre was a hugely popular form of spectator entertainment. And it was thanks to this medium that that female audiences had long been accustomed to viewing their favorite theater actresses and the clothes they wore as the latest word and chic and and actresses wore high fashion on an off stage and we'll heralded as fashion icons in newspapers. Fashion Magazines and film would prove no different different with its bevy of Silverscreen starlets who would capture the admiration of millions of women audience goers all across the country so with the film industry fast on the rise in the early twentieth century. We see the debut of the first film Fan Magazines such as photo play and Motion Picture magazine. And both of these magazines presented actresses as this fashion trendsetters. And you WANNA go down a rabbit hole. You can go to media history project dot org forward slash fan magazines because they have a huge archive five of keyword searchable magazines on there. So have a blast so far but it will it will take up an entire afternoon. Photo play even had a regular column dedicated to fashion which often featured full-body photographs of actresses so as to best display their entire gowns printed in black can white though. These photographs were accompanied by text. That really detailed the gowns color and fabric for the enquiring reader actress Norma talmadge was featured so often in the fashion section in a photo play that she was even named fashion editor for a short time in nineteen twenty by emphasizing the dress and appearance of these early film stars. These he's magazines played a pivotal role in establishing film actresses as fashion icons. But you may be wondering who was dressing them today. We're all accustomed to the important role the costume designer and Costume Department and Film and Television Production. Obviously what would Miss Marvelous. Mrs Mazel be without Donna and her talented team of assistance. Cutters fitters Taylor shoppers. dyers agers the list. There are a lot the people helping out on those productions. Let's just say Oh. Yeah but actually in the earliest days of cinema. There was no such thing as a costume designer and thus no costume department dedicated educating to produce in costumes for a specific movie so according to costume designer and historian Deborah Landis in her book dressed century of Hollywood costume design. She's actually written quite extensively on the history of Hollywood design. So you're going to hear her name. Come up quite a bit so according to Deborah Producer Adolph Zuqar and director. D W Griffith were among the first to recognize the importance of and need for the professional costume designer. And this was in the nineteen ten's but we still do not see standardization cassation of the costume designer and department until the nineteen twenties so prior to this actors and actresses were largely expected to provide their own wardrobes for contemporary foams. With many I mean those who could actually afford it. I suppose many of these people work directly with their favorite fashion designers to create their specific onscreen. Looks for instance. Paul Poiret as you all know who we adore and love. He designed the period costumes for acclaimed actress. Sarah Bernhardt in the nineteen twelve French film. The loves of Queen Queen Elizabeth. It does not surprise us at all. That far was among the very first fashion designers to embrace the new medium of film as a way to extend. His influence is an advertise his brand although he would never admit it. Of course big neither would contemporary lady Lucille Duff Gordon. Who designed the gallons for the leading ladies for over twenty films between Nineteen Fourteen and nineteen twenty two starting with the perils of Pauline starring? Pearl White I love that AH film And in April nineteen eighteen vote dedicated to page spread to Lucille designs for actress Clara Campbell Young and the Nineteen nineteen eighteen film. The reason why which was written by Lucille sister the famed novelist turned screenwriter. Eleanor Glynn thanks to there's well known collaborations nations. I mean. Is it any wonder that Motion Picture magazine declared that quote motion picture actresses where the latest modes and they declared this in its September nineteen fourteen issue. The article goes on to say that quote women revel in the style of gown much better in the picture show than she can in the pages of some fashion journal but this brings up a very very interesting point April because we all know how quickly fashion can change and what was in fashion when you're designing and then shooting a film while it might have changed I by the time. The film was released six months to a year later. Case in point Lucille's designs for Clara in the reason why might have been presented by vogue as the latest fashions nineteen eighteen. But I know at least one of those designs came straight from her nineteen seventeen collections. Clair West one of the very first screen credited costume designers address address. This very issue in an interview with women's wear daily in December nineteen nineteen according to her fashionable film costumes reproduced thanks to new fashion forecasting which is fascinating. She goes on to say quote. It is particularly difficult to dress characters for the screen when one considers that the close not only must be up to date but they must be several months head of style and you know by designing for the future Claire and other costume designers designers of this time really consider themselves both costume and fashion desires case in point one month prior women's wear daily had interviewed West about the influence silence of Hollywood on fashion in an article titled Motion Pictures To Create New Fashion Center and at the time West was under a seven year contract with the picture and distribution distrubution company. lasky famous players company. Soon to be known as a name. Some of you may recognize paramount pictures quote as for the role which motion pictures plays plays and fashion resort. In Miss West opinion there is no limit West oversaw the designing and making of costumes for the entire film company. So this is no oh small order and she did this in a three story building devoted entirely to costume production just to give you an idea of the size of this costume. Department West fulltime fulltime team consisted of sixty five women including five flower makers ten designers. Numerous seamstresses to Taylor's staff hairdressers. There's a number of assistance quote in this way said West. We have the ideal conditions under which fashions should be created and created. Is the keyword right here because they were not buying you know off the rat clothing cast for both period and contemporary films. The majority of the clothes seen on the stars in Hollywood films were produced made to measure for them in

Top 2 Ways to Learn English
"So the number one way for sure I would say movies. I remember, I don't know if I've told the story on the show before, but I was living in Amsterdam for a little while in my twenties. And I met this dude from Norway, and he was like completely fluent in English. Like, he spoke as if he had grown up in New York like interesting the accent and everything, and I was like have you lived in the states, and he's like I've never been to an English speaking country, and he wasn't even a good student. He didn't like study English in school or anything. He just watched movies like movies constantly all the time. And that's how he learned his fluent English. So work south really interesting, and yeah, you see that in. Yeah. Definitely in plate like in Norway and Scandinavia different parts of Scandinavia. People seem fluent basically a hundred percent. I went and. Yeah, that is amazing. If you're because it's really like being immersed in English in a sense, your entertainment is immersed in English for. For sure for sure I just want sort of out of the box recently as far as movies go and watched an action movie called den of thieves, and I absolutely loved him. You know, just the heist film with a bunch of shooting. And I, you know, I appreciate the action genres, and I know a lot of listeners like action. So I recommend den of thieves. I love it. I love it. So that is our number one recommendation. So that is that number one and number two is right in that. Same order is watching an English Serey or multiple series. And the reason I like this personally is that you get like I said before you can kind of get invested in the story and the characters over a longer period of time. So I feel like your fluency kind of carries out over time. So it's kind of it becomes a bit of a project to come back to the show all the time and spreads spread it out in a sense rather than just two hours of intense immersion. It's over weeks. True. Yeah. And it's easier to consume if it's like twenty minutes on like, the good place or something older like cheers or Frazier. I still like those old ones too. And so it's easy to fit in like even on a lunch break, you could watch an episode. But then also with these prestige television sort of series like the one I mentioned the leftovers or. Like, the very first one the sopranos stuff like that. You get to know these characters and how they talk, and they do have like sort of catchphrases or quirky things that they say all the time. And so I think this little bit of repetition along with getting really comfortable with how they talk that accent. And you just understand more and more at every episode, and you do forget, you're learning at all because you get so like you said like invested in the story and what's happening. That's so true. That's so true. Does. I mean, I know a lot of people like friends, and that's great. It's awesome. If you guys like friends, we love to recommend other options to kind of branch out from that for sure I know on another episode. We mentioned the marvelous MRs Mazel that is only auch. Yup. I love it. I just finished watching a British one called the flowers, which is also amazing Livia Coleman is in it. She won best actress for the favorite. She won the. Oscar this year, and she's she can do comedy drama everything. And this is I would say a drama. It's a mixture of comedy and drama, so the flowers. Yeah. Something is one that. I like is the good doctor. So the acting is not amazing. I feel like what I've despite what you just said Jessica about the hang award that the person one I almost feel like with so many kind of series out there. Now, I feel like the acting is maybe not as good. But maybe kind of the story lines are interesting. You know, they're kinda there's there's a certain quality to a lot of shows. And it's not always in the acting. Sometimes it is though, but I like the good doctor. So it's a story of a doctor that has autism. Really interesting story. So that's one that I would recommend you guys. Yeah. I think because the good doctors a network show. Right. So we're talking like ABC NBC. Those. Yeah. That's right. So, but you are definitely following. You're coming back every week in your following a story line. So it's essentially it's the same thing. Yeah. That's awesome. And then so those are the top two, I sure and I really like the sixth one that he gave where you make yourself speak out loud. Every day you have to listening to half of it. Right. You have to take what you watched. What you listen to and use it somehow. Right. So definitely find a website like just Google conversation starters. And there's so many websites like two hundred and fifty conversation topics more than enough right for you to just

"This is here and now at the Emmys last night game of thrones one for drama. The marvelous MRs Mazel one for comedy and the ethics series. The assassination of Gianni Versace she American crime story picked up three awards including best limited series. The show is about the late fashion designer Gianni Versace. She who was gunned down in front of his Miami Beach home in nineteen Ninety-seven in January, I spoke with two of the executive producers, Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson. They were also the producers of twenty sixteen the people vs OJ Simpson, American crime story. When we first got involved with Ryan Murphy, We had developed the people vs OJ Simpson as a standalone season of television, and he transformed our one season into the first season of an ongoing anthology which is now American crime story very early on in the process. He had said that he wanted to tell the story of Andrew Cunanan and Johnny Braschi and Brad, and I at that time didn't actually know very much except for the big headlines. We just didn't know very much about the rest of the story, which was that there had been for victims prior to. That it was the largest failed manhunt in the history of the FBI. And for me, I didn't know very much at all about actually what a trendsetter both culturally and in terms of sort of social politics of being out that for Saatchi was at the time. And so there was a lot of learning for us, but Ryan was the one who said, we've got to do it as a season. We'll inbred. How difficult is it to approach a story like this? Which is about real people and real events and still be sensitive to how painful and shocking the murder, not just for sake, but the other people that Nina just mentioned Jeffrey trail. David Madsen Lee miglin William Reese, how difficult those were, you know, we think about the victims a lot when we're making these shows. And I think any ethical producer of something that's dealing with true crime or any true story has to always remember that there's. Real people at the center of it in real pain. And I can't pretend that by doing the show, we don't revisit that pain for the people out there. We think it's important to the shows because they're about more than just the murders. They're usually about something that is bigger in American culture and the murder of genre. Saatchi really was a way for us to explore the politics of being out and being gay in the nineteen nineties. To ask this question of why this culture of celebrity assassination exists in the United States. I think that one of the ways this show is different from the people vs OJ Simpson is that the OJ Simpson show did was about the trial, and it was really about the lawyers. And this show is a lot more about the victims. It's about who these people were that Andrew killed and the sort of injustice of their deaths. It's also though about Andrew Cunanan played by Darren criss in the show, and let's listen to a clip from the show. Here he is talking with John. Iverson. She played by Edgar Ramirez after the opening night of the opera Capriccio, which for Satchy designed the costumes for in San Francisco back in nineteen ninety from your family's everything. Everything I ever made was from his sisters on maybe every threats I make for her. That makes me want to cry. Makes me. It's mine. Yes, with that too. If of course his performance is just incredible. I mean, he, he just lies constantly and you can see it as a as of you're. He lies so much that he, I think he does not know his own truth very well. And as the show goes backwards in time to his origins, you see where where those habits began, and he lies so much that he eventually finds himself completely alone because nobody really knows who he is because he's a different person with everyone. The series is based on the book vulgar favors by Vanity. Fair contributor. Maureen orth and she and her publisher Random House stand by her reporting on this, but the ver Sashi family. The and virtues partner Gianni Versace she's partner have criticized the series and said, it doesn't reflect reality. How do you respond to that? You know, this is not an authorized piece about the facade CI family in the same way that you know, the Simpsons series wasn't authorized..
