"Keep my. Number six five one nine nine two two six toll free eight six six nine eight nine nine two six as I've said before sometimes a guest exceeds your expectations, and you just you just never know what you're going to get up with Homer Homer Hickam. He was what I was hoping. He would be. You never he never lost that. Down-home goodness. Growing up in a small town. And what a pleasure was to to have him on the show. So let's open the lines. You know, we were talking earlier because he was delayed in getting them on. And we were talking about. In the book. The rocket boys are October sky. Goes deep into miss Riley, the teacher that had such an impact. On those boys. Those rocket boys. She motivated them. Convince them to. To enter their rockets into the county science fair competition. He was because of that all of the rocket boys. Got college scholarships. Which was pretty doggone cool. It really was. And I, you know, you've heard me talk about a couple of teachers that had an impact on me early in my life, and it was Hazel jungles from Woodlake elementary and Donald buckman. My sixth grade teacher, MRs jungles was my fourth grade teacher. And both up more incredible incredible. Teachers Donald buckman was the teacher that got me. Just absolutely infatuated with history. Avarice avarice reader when it comes to history. I have hanging in the studio here. Susan, you probably don't know this a civil war musket. Mr. buckman sent me about a year ago. He called me. And he said. We don't have any errors. And we're trying to figure out what to do with all of our stuff. And I was wondering if you would like to have that civil war musket. That's. It's an honor. That is wonderful. Yeah. It is hanging here in the studio looking at it right now. It's really cool. Hey, every time. I look at it. I think of Mr. buckman. That's awesome. Yeah. He was Susan in the summer months. He was a civil war. Battlefield guide. A guide at national parks. Yes. So he left the state. Yeah. I do this. Yeah. Just just an amazing individual and became such a good friend. We reconnected after all these years and and. Go to lunch when he was in Richfield, he's living he and his wife, Carol or living in shell lake Wisconsin and just wonderful people. But you think back to the teachers, and and I was lucky to reconnect with Hazel journals. I gave the eulogy at her funeral and. I consider that one of the the biggest honors that I've ever ever been given. I missed you talking about this earlier what grades were they he's jungles Hazel generals was fourth grade and Don Bachman, Donald buckman sixth grade. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. It's when you're young and developing informing being impressionable. He made the words in in the history books come alive, he knew how to tell a story. You know, we're talking learning about the revolutionary war. He made it come alive. Same thing with the civil war. He made everything he said it just jumped off the pages who was good history teacher. You're not a kid. I mean, he knew what he was talking about. We I reconnected and got together for a lunch. One day. We were talking about the civil wars. So he said who's your all time favorite? And I said, well, it's gotta be. Colonel chamberlain. From the battle of Gettysburg me. So what do you like about him? You know, the teacher was he's still teaching you wanted to know what I knew about him. And even corrected me. On the pronunciation of the college that he went to and where he became a teacher. Consummate teacher. Yeah. Kashmira teacher. Exactly. So I want to ask you to honor the teachers that had an impact on your life. And every every one of us had those. I mean, Susan you were talking about this. Yeah. Teacher and you'd go to her house. And I was telling you about the musket we were doing a paper drive in sixth grade, we all collect papers and. Either take him to the school. But this one Saturday we met over Mr. bucknell's house the bundle up all these newspaper of the garage was packed with newspapers. And during this he said who wants lemonade? Of course, we all went. Yeah. And so we went through the house, and they're bubbas fireplace was a civil war musket. And that was standing there looking at at that. Nissan. Would you like to hold that? I said, yeah. And so he he let me handle that. Wow. That made such an impression on me. And. When we first got together for that lunch. I said, you still have your your grandad's civil war musket, and he said, well, I headed up other cabin in Wisconsin, somebody broke in and stolen. Oh, that was one of the items stolen and the musket that he eventually gave to me. Was he wanted to pick up another one like it? And so we bought another one that was like it. And you know, again, I was just so honored that that he would call and asked me if I would like that. And I said absolutely I have a collection of antique firearms historical firearms. And and. Most of them are just in pristine condition. Also, they still work and stuff. Have you ever tried to fire them like the musket have you gone out to field? And. Yeah, that thing we'll gun. No, what do you put in there? BB gun. Pulitzer. Put in a musket. That's what they're called a medieval. And they look like a bullet. Do they still sell that stuff? Yeah. You can buy that stuff. Okay. I wondered if you had to go to a blacksmith or something have you make you some? Yeah. And the muskets you pour the powder down. And then you drop the bullet down in there. Camp tamped Aram, the ramrod, and you tap it down. And then on these old muskets you have to put a firing cap on the nipple it's called. And so when you cock the hammer back, and you pull the trigger it hits the cap, the cap has a spark that goes down into the barrel ignites the powder, which propels the bullet forward. See I'm being silly here. But I'm also kind of serious, but that's good gun control. All guns illegal worst muskets. You ever? Heard of a convenience store being held up by must. You really have to think about wanting to shoot a gun if you shoot a musket because it's gonna take you some time to load it load it into your house and then go out, but if you had to reload again. Here's. I've got a couple of sharks that were from the civil war. And when I bought the first one that was a carbon that was used in the civil war and then afterwards, civil war. It was used in the Indians the planes wars. And it was it was captured by Indians, you could tell by the brass tacks. That had been put in. Oh, interesting was that it was recaptured by the cavalry and the tax removed, and it was still in service with the history of of my son. Steve, I think he was I'm guessing he was about ten years old when I bought that one and it's fifty caliber, and we're shooting it, you know, little guy, and he he fired the first shot he said. Do you ever think you'd think the guy that carried this and the civil war, the do you ever think that a couple of knuckleheads like us would be shooting it? Oh, wow. That's pretty astute for young two years later. Yeah. Isn't that something? Yeah. Does it have a big what is that called recoil or kick back when you shoot a must not too bad? Not too bad. No muskets have such a long barrel absorbs it. The sharps have a little bit of a kick. Because her fifty caliber the one is a fifty seventy it's called because he was asleep was put in after the war and then sent out to the plains wars, the planes war. And the rifle is a forty five ninety that has a bit of a kick as fun to shoot it. It'd be interesting. If maybe we did one night the history of firearms, we could do that. And, you know, have a firearm expert on an I used to do a collector show, and I have a couple of people who are experts. Yeah. That'd be that'd be fun line. That's kind of talk about the history of guns, and how they were made, and what kind of guns and the ever Lucien of how we came to where they are today. That would be fun, right? Gotta Maddox that would be fun. You're good. We'll take a break. This is eight three O W C C O. Download.
