"Joining us. We were just talking about easy shoes amongst other things and now we're going to continue last week story time so this'll be part. Two of zora neale hurston story. I'm going to use my best animal. Planet david attenborough voice. Or something like that to tell the story. I'm going to try and sound really fancy and we're really professional and the way we go storytime part to last week. We talked about how. Mrs hurston was the benefactor of zora neale hurston and the benefit and the detriment. It brought her so where we were. Last week was hurston was beginning to chafe at the restrictions of her contract with mrs mason. She had the florida and new orleans material organized and ready for publication and wanted to move on to some new projects. But mrs mason held the title for her folklore. Material and hurson was prohibited by the contract from publishing anything without mrs mason's approval. So if i wanted to see her book and print she had to submit to mrs mason's terms hurston spent nearly two years organizing her vast notes and material and finally published in the journal of american folklore in nineteen thirty one. She then looked for a book publisher for scholarly presentation of her findings. Both hurston and langston hughes. We're living in new jersey in an artist colony where mrs mason put up her proteges. It is very cool to think of langston hughes and zora neale hurston as contemporaries hurston and hughes collaborated on a play called mule bone which was a series of skits and songs based largely on the folklore that hurston had collected any fill. The first act takes place on the porch of joe clark store. That's a theme. That will come up again and again in her work person. Envisioned a form of theater that would present authentic material and oural context in an exuberant and accessible manner. Say ro because it's felt a you are al. It means ears does not mean. Oh our al which means vocal voice mouth whatever so oural makes it sound like i have a crazy new england accent and perhaps i do because i am from new england. Ro hard it's hard so langston hughes and hurston actually had a pretty complicated relationship through a series of misunderstandings. They had a falling out. There were lawsuits filed. It wasn't cute but the story goes that when they were on good terms they were writing this play together. And he actually left mrs mason's payroll because he started to feel increasingly guilty about enjoying caviar in her home meanwhile writing about the blues of his people and it just didn't feel right to him but hurston needed mrs mason's patronage for a little while longer until she found the publisher for her collection so she stayed on and it is so sad about langston hughes and door neil hurston having such a falling out and so many different ways and so many different dimensions of falling out from personal misunderstandings to professional misunderstandings. Somebody had somehow gotten their hands on the play button. Langston hughes and zora neale hurston were writing together and this other third party tried to publish and produces play without either one of their knowledge and langston hughes did not understand that and zora neale hurston did not know that was happening and of course lawsuits and falling out slater. The damage was done so the play was never produced and that is a sad story. That is what we missed out on. History is langston hughes and zora neale hurston writing. What was obviously an amazing play together. Never got produced because of drama. That drama hurston finally severed her relationship with mrs mason in one thousand nine thirty one while still searching for a publisher for folkloric collection. She needed money and believed her stories and songs could be better presented in a review that would be artistically true to the folk tradition including comedy songs and dances so this talented woman wrote and staged theatrical review the great day in nineteen thirty two using her collected folk material including authentic jamaican dancers and drummers she produced the review herself which premiered in nineteen thirty two and was structured around a day in a railroad work camp ending with an evening at the duke. It was an artistic success and she eventually took the show on the road. Despite this she still had no publisher for her folklore collection so she had to earn her living through the review. Hurston tried her hand. At various academic jobs in the south working on her conception of authentic theatre in college drama departments hurston the scholar with her barnard credentials and hurston the exuberant voice of eaten bill with her theatrical successes sought to present an authentic and traditional form of expression her goal was to bring a legitimate folklore to theater and concert audiences but segregated florida in the great depression was not a fertile ground for black theater production nor was hurston vocation in academia. So she shifted her focus to short fiction in jonas gourd vine in an attempt to fund the eaten village voice and when i keep saying eaten ville voice that's to say the entire voice of an entire culture the way it feels and sounds and the vibe of eaten ville gonna say eaton village voice a lot and that's what it means the entire culture of ian ville wrapped up into this narrative. Voice that nora. That needs her ston pretty much single handedly brought the world because we don't have a lot of other authors who are bringing this voice to the world in an from an authentic of experience so moving up. She published the gilded six bits in story magazine and august. One thousand nine hundred eighty three. This is a mature story. Set an eaton ville and was the catalyst in attracting philadelphia publisher. J b lippincott. Who asked her for a novel. She rented a cabinet neaten ville and sat down and wrote jonas gourd vine in nineteen thirty. Four this was hurston first novel which was a blend of autobiography folklore and fiction. The book succeeds because the voice of eaten ville pours from her pen. The story is authentic based on the life of her father. The baptist preacher born into slavery john pearson rises with determination the help of his strong wife lucy and his gift for poetry but john has a fatal flaw. He's a philanderer after his wife. Dies in a deathbed scene. Based on the death of hirszon's mother. John filled with guilt but bewitched by his lover with the help of a hoodoo man remarries in haste and eventually is cast out by his congregation. And by the way this is not autobiographical. The use of collected folklore is central to the novel which describes customs food celebrations and the telling of quote lies on the porch of the general store and is written in the black vernacular. John's farewell sermon..
