Impeachment Hearing Takeaways: Trump request to Ukraine seen as a "demand"

"Started with a whistle blowers complain about President. Trump's contact with a foreign leader had a perfect phone call with the president of Ukraine. Like I mean perfect today. I'm announcing the House of Representatives. Moving forward with an official impeachment inquiry. Good morning everyone. This is the third in a series of public hearings. It'd be holding his part of the house impeachment inquiry. It's Mike Schmidt in the Washington Bureau of the New York Times. Today was another big day of testimony. Testimony AAC coming from four different witnesses split into a morning and afternoon session. Three of these witnesses were actually on the infamous July twenty fifth call between trump and Ukrainian President Alinsky and not surprisingly much to the testimony. Today was about that call. What did these officials think about the call when they heard it? How is it dealt with with? What were the implications of it? Why was it troubling but the latest is that for me? What we really saw today was the Republican Strategy Strategy on display in a way that we hadn't before the best example of this came with how the Republicans treated one of the witnesses? This is in the morning session. The uniform I wear today is that of the United States. Army Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Veneman Vin. Men is the director for European. Repeat Affairs at the National Security Council. He's a career military officer and in his opening statement he describes how his father chose to come to the United States state from the Soviet Union. When my father was forty seven years old he left behind his entire life so his three sons could have a better and safer for lives and the profound sense of duty that instilled in him as a young man? I decided I wanted to spend my life. Serving this nation that gave my family refuge from McCain oppression and he finishes his opening statement by looking straight at the camera and addressing his father Directly Dad. Yeah I'm sitting here today in the. US Capitol talking to our elected professionals is proof that you made the right decision forty years ago to leave the Soviet a union come here to the United States of America. Do not worry I will be fine for telling the truth again for your consideration will be happy to answer your questions. So obviously this is a powerful introduction and immediately set him up as a strong character witness for the Democrats a uniform perform Patriot essentially just trying to do the right thing for his country up. confinment what was your real time reaction to hearing that infamous July twenty fifth call so when Adam Schiff. The committee chairman takes the MIC. He draws on his background in. Ask him what his reaction was. In July twenty fifth call which Vin men had been listening in on it was inappropriate. It was improper for the president to requested to demand an investigation into a political opponent. which vim in characterizes as demand by the president to investigate one of his political rivals? Carl you You've described this as demand. This favor of the president asked Chairman The culture come from the military culture when a senior asks you to do something even if it's play in pleasant it's not to be taken as a request. It's it's to be taken as an order in this case and then it was the Republicans turn to question vitamin and this. He's where we saw this new sharp line of attack from them. I think the ranking member colonel. I want to thank you for your service. Jason sacrificed to our great country. This afternoon your your former boss. Mr Morrison is going to be sitting right where you're sitting. And he's represented Jim Jordan. WHO's sort of been the tip of the spear for the Republicans at these hearings brings up earlier closed door testimony? That been men's boss. Tim Morrison had given Mr Morrison said this. I had concerns about lieutenant. Colonel Kinsman Judgment Jordan says that Morrison as well as Fiona Hill another other National Security Council official had concerns about been men's judgement. So your boss had concerns about your judgment. Your former boss. Dr Hill had concerns about your judgment. Your colleagues had concerns about your judgment. Any idea why they have those impressions. Colonel Yes represented Jordan. I guess I'll start start by the Reading Dr Hill's own words as she she attested to in my last evaluation that was dated inman kind minded deathly responds by taking out his own performance review and reading from what Fiona Hill said about him. Alex is a top one percent military officer and the best army officer. I've worked with in my fifteen years of government service. He's brilliant unflappable. An exercise excellent judgement. So Mr Jordan I would say that I can't say why Mr Morrison question my judgment. Maybe it was a different cultures. There's military so we're seeing here that the Republicans are turning their focus from what the hearing was intended to be about the phone call between trump's events Alinsky to basically fight over who vitamin is his credibility and this has been a talking point of the conservative media. You for weeks here we have A. US National Security official who is advising Ukraine while working inside the White House apparently against the president's interest Republicans in the house or using the exact same rhetoric but now straight to Vince face in the middle of his testimony. The White House began to run with it to the White House. were been men still works. The tweeted out during his questioning. The quote from Morrison. I had concerns about lieutenant. Colonel Vince judgment. And so there's no real surprise here. The hearings are playing out along party lines but the question is how will independent American see this. Who Will they believe? Will they believe this man sitting in his military tur- uniform with the Purple Heart on it talking about a patriotic sense of duty that his father who immigrated to the United States instilled Stilton him or will the American public believe conservatives in the House and the White House and the far-right media. That's sort sorted the question of these

He went off the wonderful scripted actually contradicting himself at the same question and answer session here he is at another point I heard very bad things about her and I don't know if I recall somebody gold but I heard very very bad things about it for me it does not good okay so trump's stumbling around there from one version to another comes after five setbacks today coming within hours of each other Democrats could be within reach of temp trump's tax return so this was a crucial court ruling a federal judge ruling against trump's lawsuit to keep those taxes under wraps another federal judge yet another lawsuit ruling against trump signature pet project the wall and then another loss in court three other federal judges just blocking trump's will making it harder for immigrants to obtain legal status trump's response pretending knows nothing about it we lost an immigration I haven't heard that would perhaps the best thing you can put on what was a very bad day first presidency is I hadn't heard that Pamela Brown is out front live outside the White House and Pamela look this was not a good day for the president that's right Aaron he is ending this week with a barrage of negative headlines I in a move viewed in this white all says an act of defiance the former Ukrainian ambassador a testified on Capitol Hill today that the president directly campaigned for her to be fired for Political Purpose says now Democrats claimed the White House try to block her from testifying but she showed up anyway now the president addressed or testimony he said that she may be a quote wonderful woman but he doesn't know her and then deflected saying it was a Ukrainian president who did not like her and then a devastating blow air in the president also lost several high profile four cases today earlier today he lost that court battle over turning over turning over several years of his tax returns to Congress his lawyer say they are weighing an appeal on that decision by the DC appeals court and then he lost some court battles on his signature policy focus emigration a federal in Texas ruined the President's national emergency declaration to build a border wall as unlawful and there's another defeat Aaron a federal judge today blocked a trump administration rule that makes so more difficult for emigrants who rely on public assistance to obtain legal status now I asked the president directly about this today he said he hadn't heard about the rules on immigration sure when I asked him this has been several hours after the royds came out but he did express competence that he would win and he pivoted to focus on all the judges he is put on the bench Aaron thank you very much and I'm GonNa go to Democratic Congresswoman Val demings who sits on both the House intelligence and committees congressman thanks so much for being with me so as far as I understand that the deposition with the former ambassador to Ukraine Marie Ivanovich is still ongoing and we expect it to end momentarily Mr Schiff Mr Jordan to come out and address cameras live so we're awaiting that but I know obviously your staff is in that room you have been briefed on what has happened so far so as far as you know did she say anything that furthers your impeachment case against President Trump will high air and it's great to be with you and let me just say this may be bad day for the president but it's actually been a good day for those of us who are in pursuit of justice in pursuit of the facts and who are involved in this impeachment inquiry my hat's off to ambassador your which who number one appeared today as you've already stated has been behind closed doors testifying all day long and there is no doubt that this is a career foreign service officer who took our old fair very seriously served admirably for our country committed to her duty and that really demonstrated itself today in her testimony the she's very courageous and today was no exception has she spoken directly or how has she been about what she was explicitly asked to do in terms of getting Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden and his son while I can't get as you well know into the details of her testimony what I can tell you is that she's been behind closed doors giving her disposition all day long and she certainly added very all you bold testimony she we would consider her a critical critical witness in our impeachment inquiry and I think she's added value and there's

Question you help the president's campaign or were involved in the campaign as a Representative spokesman, even in your words today was your idea for the campaign dating back to two thousand eleven is that accurate. Yes. Or no. Yes. Two thousand eleven is a year that sticks in my head. I the year my daughter was born and it was the year. I was diagnosed with cancer. I was not then pushing for Donald Trump to be president. I was fighting cancer even in two thousand sixteen I was publicly backing certain Republican from Texas. My guess who was. But you you were all in. And you either want to Donald Trump to be your president because it would be good for the country or you did it for your own personal advancement or both. Sort of the two options real Americans in my district and across the country wanted the president to be president not in any way because he's perfect rather. Because they are sick and tired of this whole base supported the president. Because they are sick and tired of the games that we are seeing here today. They are sick and tired of politicians refused to secure the border balance our budget restore healthcare freedom, and then get the hell out of their way. So they can leave their life. They're mystified that we amass about one hundred billion dollars of debt for our which means we've blown through three hundred four hundred four hundred fifty million dollars during this charade in amassing that four hundred fifty million dollars. They're sick and tired of a democrat party that willfully ignores cartel driven asylum prices on our border that endangers American citizens in the migrants who seek to come here. Just yesterday in eagle pass Texas border patrol agents, arrested in MS thirteen gang member mcallen, Texas. This is this week. This is what we're going. This is not what we're doing for the American people while we engage in this charade. This is not what the American people sent us here to do. This is an embarrassment for our country. I talked to my beautiful wife back in dripping springs, Texas, just before the hearing, I said don't bother don't bother watching. She said I roughly expected don't worry. I won't I have more important things to do. And she liked the rest of the American people have a hell of a lot more important things to do than to watch this. The only little criticism everyone was like where where are the Guatemala questions? We didn't do anything from Guatemala, which I know is your your favorites is. Yes, dividers. So I decided that I needed to fix this. Not only are we potentially covering Tamala today. We have a former survivor Guatemala contestant on the podcast. We have Bryan cord in here with us today the originator of outta here. Yes. He brian. Corden. Yes. Yes. Brian. How are you? Welcome back. I that intro. I've never been better. I'm fantastic nothing against survivor Guatemala, you making it like, we're shading survivor Guatemala. I what I've said is that I feel like ninety percent of the questions on this show seemed to be about survivor Guatemalan. I won't say ninety percent. That sounds like a little bit of Kayla's math. But yeah, okay. Maybe I go to Guatemala more than I do too to some other seasons. But it's fun. I think it's a I think it's an underlying season. I deserve some love. Okay. Now. Brian have you said before the show that you were going to recuse yourself from all survivor Guatemala questions that may come up on today's quiz. No, I'm taking any point. I can get all all the Guatemala questions. Okay. All right. Even on the game. At this point. I'm a game. Anyway. So is that is that fair, Jordan? I believe that's fair. I think I've. I fill my belly Mickelson. Yeah, listen, I feel bad. I feel worse than anybody. I didn't have you on for the British Open. We're in Dallas. We recorded these podcasts at had to run the next two weeks. One of them was British Open week, and what do you do? You go on Simmons and you pick the fricken winner. You got, you got Francesco Molinari, but as far as I could tell in the thirty or so bet you made none of them had Francesco Molinaro on them. So one of my classic one of my classic oversights I bet him to top ten I and and I had, you know the the problem because when when you have these multiple menus and all these venues that you have to get the picks out and you know, I went on, I talked to Patrick mayo, mutual Palo Vars, engaged out a winner. And and you know, when you're doing all this media like me, it's hard to keep track of all every everybody you're given out and and all the winners. And then you know, next thing you know, there's an oversight you give the winner out. You make the people all the money, but here I am. You know, all I got out of it was a top ten, you know, tickle. Yeah, I know. I know while you did all right, that Sunday, but we're gonna make money this week. That's all that matters. Tell us about Belle. Reeve. Tell me now I'm reading about burnt greens, burnt, putting greens. That's my, I think my favorite. Catskills comedian. What do you know about Belle Reeve in the course itself. Yeah, burnt putting greens also, a great punk band from the eighties. The the. So it's a Reese Jones redesign and he and his father, Robert Trent Jones, have you know, put a an imprint on quite a number of major championship venues in these United States. Now architecturally, my podcast co host Geoff Shackelford doesn't see eye-to-eye with with recent terms of his ARCO architectural philosophy, but all that stuff is over my head and irrelevant to you and I- producing a little return on investment for US House, the things that we need to know our how, what, what, what kind of traits, what kind of attributes are we looking for out of the professional golfers who are going to have the most accessible at this venue and what are the conditions on the ground. So Reese Jones himself calls his design at Belle Reeve a ball strike. Offers paradise. What does that mean? Apparently it's supposed to mean is the ball striking generally refers to the combination of driving well and hitting greens, those two traits. So if you drive the ball in play and you hit greens in regulation, that makes you a good ball striker. And if you're able to do that at this venue, there is a an anticipation of some success. I mentioned the burnt greens this this tournament is being competed in in in Missouri in the middle of August. I don't have a good explanation for why. I don't know who why people thought that that competing in a venue where it's it's going to be hotter than Hades and they have a hard time with the agronomy as it is because you know, once you get on a sustained kind of heat run and they've had, you know, erratic rain and so forth. So they the the, the greens are not going to be in the kind of shape..

"mr. jordan" Discussed on This Week In Marvel

"I'm so excited. Talk about Infinity wars and to do that. Let's bring on Mr. Jordan de white editor of the comic book series, Infinity wars Jordan. Thank you for coming now, just give us a little bit of info on what Infinity wars is before we dive into looking at wars and war together and all the good stuff. Well, there's a new character called requiem who if you've read the first issue, you know who requiem is, but I don't wanna say anything in case you haven't. It's me, it's you as premiered in in moon girl, then you carried over into Infinity. Moore's requiem is setting their sights on the Infinity stones. And are we talking about the big spoiler from prime yet or are we keeping that secret to a couple of weeks old? Right? Then we're just going to say it requiem murdered fan owes chopped his head right off. Everybody was worried that was going to try to get these Finnity stones now that they're back, not a problem requiem solved that problem for the heroes. Bonus, but now recommends a much bigger problem. The people who possess the stones are very worried about fan, but all of a sudden requiem shows up and things are gonna get pretty bad. Yeah. So I was thinking about Infinity war and found this I have for it and also some similarities, and I thought we could dig into that. Yes, Jordan, you had maggots in the lead up to all of the Infinity stuff. Very briefly, very, very briefly. Maga's possessed the soul stone for a hot second done. He's he's yes. Yeah, we what we thought that was a fun teaser. He because he was on the covers, everybody was like, oh, this is going to be a big fight between magazine and Warlock. And then all of a sudden ultra just came right up and killed him to. There's a lot of villains killing other villains when you don't expect it in this series, is it they're better than here's killing. Here's that's true. That's very true. You know, we'll any other villains be joining the fray. We're seeing a bunch of groups, especially in number one. I was so happy to see spot and Typhoid typhoid. spot. He's wonderful Diculeng. Absolutely. So happy when I'm proud because I think before now probably you'd say the like lamest character to have an INFINITI stone would have probably been pip. The troll. Why read Infinity war Kosice terrific. Keeps the gem between his toes see does well, and that was a payoff of a joke that I remember where they were. They wouldn't tell you where he kept it for a while. But now now we've given an INFINITI stone Turk Barrett who is a former stilt man and frequent recipient of punches by daredevil? Yeah, I just I keep wanting to hear about this. I love that there's an entire gang of bad guys entrusted with one of these stones. I'm not interested, they, I guess they happened upon it ended up with them. Yeah, wasn't a choice. It just ended up with them. Found it during a weird. It was a fight between what was it like a scroll ninjas and yes, I was in the one shot and they were trying to get it to doctor strange, but Turk ended up with it anyway and he was like, I can use this to get ahead in crime. He's right, of course you can. I love that so logical for him, but he has, no, it was like he shouldn't have that. I should earthly. He's a little too earthbound for it. We, which is fun but can tease any other villains joining Infinity wars. They're definitely well. So I'm trying to think of who we've shown obviously can is also involved right now right now, I think in the form of iron lad, but of course, carrying is basically everyone right at some point in time line, we've teased whether you consider this character villain or not, that Emma frost is going to get involved in this series very controversial, whether we call her villain. But sometimes she's a little, I'm sure you don't get any about that. No tweets, none whatsoever..

"Say whatever he wants at the end of mr jordan five minutes until the it is not minister his time i appreciate your services stop personal we just want the information why don't you tell peter struck not the entire questions yesterday when i asked when i asked peter struck if he'd ever communicated with glenn simpson gave us the answer he gave us dozens of times on advice of fbi counsel i can't answer that question why couldn't answer that question i appreciate your sincere concerns but i didn't get any instructions shuffle again i actually had a modicum a modicum of respect for rod rosenstein because he's in a difficult situation and i try to give those people the benefit of the doubt no long 'cause you what he's doing here he's not taking responsibility for anything that's happening under him or under his watch and that's the sign of a weasel i don't i don't like weasels i don't like bosses who throw employee's under the bus i don't like bosses who tried to blame i'm just you know i got a team over here doing this i trust that team they did something wrong while you don't attack me yeah not a sign of leadership oh by the way agent i finished the book by the way i'm not sure i know of anybody that meets those leadership qualities with some problem with instructions he had i'll be happy jordan when you find some problem with a production and with questions it doesn't mean that i'm personally trying to conceal something from you that means running organization that's trying to follow the rules and we're going to show what was interesting when i asked him if he'd ever talked to bruce or he said he had said he had three times in two thousand sixteen to two thousand seventeen then i asked him have you ever talked to nellie or and he said no i haven't i said well why can you answer that question because nellie or work for glenn simpson work for fusion he could answer that question but he couldn't answer because fbi council told him he couldn't he couldn't answer the question whether you'd ever communicated with glenn simpson a journalist why couldn't answer that question is true and i appreciate your saying isn't personal sometimes it feels that way how grow up you're an f in washington dc it's not for wusses either stand up and do it or walkaway i know sir i mean i you interviewed mr struck i didn't so i can't for you then work for us one hundred fifteen thousand people who worked for me sir mr rosenstein did you threaten staffers on the house intelligence committee media reports indicate you did media reports are mistaken sometimes this is what they said having the nation's number one law enforcement officer threatened to subpoena your calls and e mails is downright chilling did you threaten to subpoena their calls and emails no sir and there's no way to subpoena phone calls well i mean i'm just saying i'm reading what the press i would guess that you not relying what the press censor why didn't ask it was a fun day on capitol hill rosenstein got his hat handed toy every which way the loose downs and more problems in the drive over on the west and eastbound c four seventy right now is stops tow truck on scene putting up from the fact that an eastbound c four seventy past the way is now on the boulder turnpike single digit feeds eastbound thirty six purchasing a hundred and fourth quarter and that's an accident only one lane of the highway is getting there westbound seventy still backed up had crashes near quebec monaco best have been cleared all lane highway open forecast tonight partly cloudy chance for storms though a sixty.

"I'm old enough to remember and i hope mr jordan doesn't become angry with me but i'm old enough to remember when when michael jordan made the absolutely accurate point that both democrats republicans by his shoes and i absolutely defended that position at the time because my view is always been that the first amendment means you can speak and also means you don't have to and so i've always sort of taken umbrage with people who presuppose that a athlete had had had a responsibility to say anything we have the right as americans to be verbal or agnostic and so i respect players that don't choose to take sides having said that my own upbringing my own value system is such that i do believe that i personally have a responsibility to speak out on things that i think are on just and for people that don't otherwise have avoid that's how i personally feel and so when i hear our players and you mentioned lebron and crew chris apparently have the same view of the world i can both as on a personal level feel an do feel very proud of them and as an executive director as well feel very proud of them and prepared to go to go to the mattresses for them in the event is any any any repercussion that that might might follow and so our players if i had a platform of twenty million people that cared about what i had to say i'd be talking i have quite that many but i do think that when you had that kind of platform i personally believe that you do have an obligation to speak out if you think that there's something that that that you can affect and i encourage any in all of our players who have similar feelings and ekman platforms take advantage of that because that's not something all of us have opportunity to do it's been done responsibly there's not a single word that's been uttered that i'm not been proud of and.

"And how to mr jordan you know i learned all about bullies on playground when is in the fourth grade and the sixth grader with going to beat my sister was the first grade and i've never been so scared in all my life but it punched him in the nose i i'm down on the ground and punched more he left us alone after that well we can't physically do that to china but we can do that economic click and if we go to other countries that china is doing this to and say look we can put this bully in its place if we present a united front and but you always have to give them a way of saving face which you do because they're asian mind thinks differently but i'm tired of my country laying down and taking it from this big bully when we don't have to and i just assumed do without about two thirds of all this stuff that comes from china and i'd like to see made in the usa put back on things and as far as the stock market goes look that is gambling on a more intelligent and high level scale and people know when they go into the stock market there is no guarantee that they are going to make money so they should be aware of the fact that they're going to be taking risks i'm worried about the people here in the middle of the country jordan i just think it's going to be very difficult to organize the world to do what she says in theory it's nice but we're we're we're antagonistic are they happy are they happy being cheated by the chinese what am i missing they're not willing to do what trump is willing to do it let's put it that way so that they're willing to sit back and be cheated i i don't get it i mean we've opened the door and if we all got in this together the chinese would crumble tomorrow i this that's right but that's that's not what's happening in the real world i mean look at chewed out with canada or nieta in mexico there's a whole bunch of people we're we're getting mad at us we're not getting them organized we're getting we're getting them mad at us for doing what what is the right thing to do that that's that's pathetic i must confess.

"An issue that certainly nights voters from mr trump and for mr jordan on that it's an area where he believes there is majority support in favor of adding work requirements now what we've heard from advocates for beneficiaries of these programs is currently structured is that there's already work requirements in place and they think that this is a meanspirited attack to try to drive partisan differences rather than a substantial overhaul the program so that sort of the line we can expect to hear from everybody are those the contours of the arguments we can expect to hear going forward there are dozens of welfare programs what would be some of the programs targeted by congressional republicans for change or otherwise that's one of those threshold questions that ultimately going to have to be hammered out what we've heard from the president is an interest in taking on the issue and igniting a national debate well we've heard in part as well as that ultimately the white house would likely be satisfied with whatever it is that the house can coalesce around the mere fact of having the discussion is useful although if there is a piece of legislation that comes out of it the end that would essentially be something they would consider to be a bonus couple of programmes could uh quite quickly come under scrutiny one is temporary assistance for needy families known as 10 if this is a cash benefit that for many people as the face of welfare um it's actually though quite a small programme it only has about three point five million participants moreover the funding for this programme is capped a already it's essentially given to those states in the form of block grants so it's not as if you could wreak major spending savings down line uh by reducing enrollment for it as opposed to a programme such as food stamps which has about forty six forty three to forty six million people enrolled in it over the past few years and that's an area where tighter eligibility requirements could make a mark quicker but could also come with significant political blowback and so that's the tension that's going to be there for whatever program republicans do decide to pursue.
