"Tools like gas operated blowers. I mean, these are simple things they require very small subsidies. But we've got to make those investments or else we're leading a lot of people behind in the screen revolution. What do you do about the Trump administration? Just putting out yesterday, for example. I mean every day it's a challenge, obviously in different ways. But there aren't going to be the rules governing method anymore. I mean, there's just want to do away with them, or at least reduced them to a great extent. Yeah. We're obviously everything we're doing we're gonna push full speed ahead, regardless of what happens in Washington, we all spend time taking turns and rants against whatever's going on in DC. But ultimately, if we spend too much time doing that we won't get anything done locally. And so I think as mayors who recognize you know, where we have an opportunity to have an impact. If there's litigation that we think could be utilized as a tool will do it. But for the most part we recognize we've got to be able to show how can be done locally and hopefully persuade other mayors and states join in and change behavior. One city at a time. And the question mayor Iverson for you Diverses, mayor of Edmonton listener tweets with animal agriculture being a top contributor to greenhouse gas. Why is what we eat not part of this conversation absolutely needs to be part of the conversation because one of the industry's that's most at risk when we see changing weather patterns and changing either too much moisture too little moisture is our food production system and all aspects of it. So when people ask me, you know, what keeps me up at night about about climate change. It's our food system. And so and Canada is one of six countries that will be a food export. Or in the next twenty years. Everybody else will be barely self. Sufficient if they're lucky or importing food, and so as as stewards of that, we have a deep responsibility to. To think about optimizing our our food production system, it's going to respond to market demands. But, but you know, we see and wwj's on the fast food chains. I won't even bring up with the trade deals because. No, let's go there. But you know, they they rolled out a plant based burger which is phenomenal. And they sold out in Alberta, which is beef country. And so people are people are interested in these alternatives. Markets are beginning to ask for them as demand changes as consumer preference changes. You know, we're seeing pulse. Production which is plant based protein production skyrocketing in our in our area these days. So I think I think that's beginning to happen food has to be part of the conversation. Clearly, and I just wanted to add something to the last point which is that. I mean, it's we can all bemoan what's happening in Washington right now. But it's actually a gift because it's exposed that what some people call. The new localism is really where solutions are are gonna come. And there is an international community of not just mayors, but thought leaders researchers innovators and entrepreneurs around the world who are sharing information and some of it is sharing best practice from affluent communities, but one of the really cool things when you go global is that communities in the global south that are leapfrogging technologies were still trying to figure out what to do with also have some of the solutions, and these international networks that have come together the c forty the global covenant of mayors on climate, the local governments for sustainability all these different organizations are becoming information sharing platforms and their data driven which makes them impervious to ideological nonsense and baffled gab because we thank goodness for Michael Bloomberg who's the UN climate change on voi-. He is. Mr. data of solving these along with governor Brown is sponsoring exactly because if we make this data driven exercise when we make it a best practice exercise, and we make it a return on investment and risk management exercise. Everybody from every part of the ideological spectrum. Who cares about our kids future can get behind it? And we'll get to more of your calls. Let me go to Joyce next. Joyce you're on the air with us. Good morning. Good morning. Good morning. Thank you. I'm with an organization twenty twenty and it's the only direct action campaign ending the climate crises to individual action and several small businesses in San Jose of actually put a billboard off of one on one. My question one of the mayor's plan to do Jane gave their citizens. Maryland Accardo, we've got you here in the studio. So naturally were getting calls that are floating toward you. And that one is actually I wanna follow it up with a specific question from a listener tweeted us, but please address thank you first for your work in the community. We appreciate it. We know that leadership comes from the community so often in areas like this, we we actually launched the climate smart plan with a very different focused and the plan we released a decade before because we recognize that if this isn't community led it's not gonna have any impact in San Jose. And so we've been deeply engaging community leaders about how we can change behaviors on a daily basis we had a program, for example, working with local employers in north San Jose where we could encourage. Companies to opt in with employees leadership and identifying the individual decisions they could make essentially to turn off the light switch and we're able to demonstrate enough savings with that program then to to get another five hundred employers on board. It really does happen because employees cared enough to persuade their employers to jump on board until we're very deliberate about this or with their climate smart plan. We just watched a competition among schools to see what students can come up with to have a big impact and improving the environment in their own neighborhoods. And we're doing everything we can to see how we can encourage these great ideas, come from the bottom up question for you. Specifically in a tweet from Corinne, I voted nearly twenty years ago for increased taxes to get Bart to San Jose. It's still isn't here. There's a light rail that goes nowhere. And it takes me twenty five to forty minutes to drive to work on Bayshore forgotten area of the city. What's your response, mayor Licadho? Yeah. I think the way that transit was designed a couple of decades ago we failed to recognize it. You have to have land uses that are compatible with the transit, and you can't have a transit system that goes by a bunch of one story tilt up buildings or in the case in some parts of north San Jose empty lot and expect there to be any transit ridership. So fair to say, we didn't get it. Right. We're working hard on getting it right now. And really identifying a lot of those. Sites along north San Jose. For example, the new Samsung North American headquarters is ten stories, and we wanna keep driving up from there. So so we've got a lot of work to do to reverse the mistakes of the past Piskorski, you spoke before about working with Rocky Mountain power, and I'd like to get your response as well as mayor Lille's response because she also talked about working with business to a comment from a question from a listener named Amanda who says I always wonder why businesses don't have policies, which encourage environmental practices, for example. Whenever I go to pizza Starbucks. I have to ask for an inhouse mug. Whereas if that was the de facto choice more people would actually choose not to use the paper not talking about big businesses here, we're talking about well, Starbucks is big business, but just everyday practices in terms of environmental conformity. Right. You know, I think companies a decade ago. Maybe weren't really all that in tune with. What was happening? But today, it's a very different story. There is a real awakening and businesses are lining up with the mayor's to help move this needle, and they see the benefits of it. They understand the economics of it. And they also understand the reality that we are dealing with today. You know, we we know that twenty twenty has to be the peak of emissions carbon output and. And what what businesses are saying is, okay. There is a reality here. We're all feeling it. We're all living in it, and our employees want us to be responsible corporations. And they want us to do our part and employees are making more and more choices about who they work for based on corporate responsibility. Let emphasis you put on the cooperation of businesses and the pressure from within or underneath from the employees. I wonder if our other two mayors agreed Iverson Patricia Deloitte, getting kinda cooperative spirit from the businesses from the commercial sector. I think we see voluntary leadership, and we see consumer preference moving in this way to millennials think very differently about their ecological footprint school curriculums have introduced those concepts of people. And so I think mindfulness about that is is gonna come. Over time, but we do need as he said faster action. And so there is a push pull there with consumer preference on the one side and regulation on the other side. And one of the things that we've seen some good progress in waste reduction, which is a huge source of greenhouse gases landfills produce, methane, if you get really good you can capture make electricity out of it. But still it's an avoidable cost of a very disposable economy. We need to turn into a much more cyclical that that reuses material wherever possible and the reasonable compass kind of an emblem of that in some ways, the water bottle is in the steel water bottles and other emblem of that, but something we're looking at a lot right now is extended producer responsibility, which is to say that if your packaging a product then and bringing it to market that is the rather than the municipality having the implications of that. And it's ratepayers have the implications of dealing with that packaging, essentially down. Downloaded onto them. The producers of that waste off to a bear some of the cost of processing it. And then that creates an incentive for them to reduce the the the wasteful packaging and we've seen lots of examples particularly in British Columbia in Canada, where that's had a huge impact on reducing costs for municipality. Reducing the junk in the landfill. Reducing the greenhouse gas emissions and being just more economically efficient overall. And so there's regulatory moves and consumer preference moves out to I know in Edmonton. You've had a lot of air quality worked on the educational front, and using monitoring kits and all that sort of thing, which I would certainly prize as being an important part of the package so to speak del coming Michael one, listen did we've learned of this drought now and cooperation is that we allow the tourism industry. It's massive in Cape Town, in fact in nine hundred fourteen. The New York Times that I took as number one this nation in the world. And went over started not coming to Cape Town, and we all have to save water, those potentially industrialized to occasion and started adapting tells us gray water to to use a deputation to they electric city, and you Sola and all of that. And that also could hate it a lot of jobs in special under the new -able energy side. So partnership is important especially drive, a low carbon economy new city, and what is also important east your spatial planning all new developments in our city. We are saying that transport must drive the development don't put people far out of the cities they need to transport to work paying forty percent of the income. And so we are now encouraging all made the elements to bowl the foreseeable housing in the form of Danes city close by work opportunities to the Jews. The carbon emissions from from our bosses. We have also just the quite live electric buses. And so that partnership is important. In fact, many of the businesses Nixon the coastline as bolt they own desalination plants have gone off the water great now. And so I meet, and I talk with developers in the business that you all the time, and they also assist as in in in reducing our own costs of doing some of these adaptation among upward political munity. And I know you're stepping down married a little in October. That's big shoes to fill their let me read some comments. Stephen Russia wanna buy an electric car. But the infrastructure is just not there. I live in a condo. So charging vehicles, basically, a no go what of government passed legislation requiring all gas stations to have two quick change stations. What other ways can the infrastructure be rapidly expanded? And asked ideas, there's another one from vixen who writes. Something that can be done at the local level is to encourage living buildings and roofs that absorb energy and as a side benefit provider urban farming opportunities and Michelle rights public banking can provide money for funding local projects that address climate concerns is not something San Jose is concerned. I think the answer is. Yes. I also want to remind listeners that you are listening to forum on public radio, and we're talking with mayors from number of cities for cities to be exact, and.
