"Because you are shaping your team both of these teams are essentially rebuilding and we have atlanta. You eluded to. They do not have the receivers they used to have now. Julio jones has gone some news gone. I mean they do have calvin ridley though. That's that's another guy. But i don't know even how healthy ridley is. Let's go to the nation's capital. La chargers at the washington vaulting la chargers one of my favorite teams as far as to look at as a future juggernaut. I love justin herbert. I like what they were doing. As far as cleaning up their offense of line. They've got the receivers and keenan allen and mike like williams was well. This is a very interesting often heckler. He's you know your fantasy football darling right now. He's a little guy. The bay like those little guys as far as you know. Receivers out of the backfield. I just think this is going to be a very good team. But once again when they travel cross country they lose a little bit All those teams lose a little bit on the one o'clock game and it's going to be very interesting. You still have a very good washington football team defense. It just depends on offense what you're going to get. What kind of firepower. You're gonna get out of mr ryan patrick. If you're gonna get that fits magic back and it is definitely possible because this is a guy that continues to do it year after year on assuming but he can put up three hundred and some yards in a game. Just like that. And with terry maclaurin there guys that know how to catch the football now yet antonio gibson as you're running back they have more firepower than they have. I think the washington football team could surprise you especially with coach of smart. And it's cutting as ron rivera. Final game baltimore vegas. Maybe man i tell you what. I never thought i would say this. But gosh do i feel bad for the baltimore raven because i'm not a guy that that Roots for a team to lose a player. How i mean. Gosh what kind of deal with the devil do they make. What is now being cashed in because everybody is going down with acl. yes gus edwards yesterday. Then you turn around and even a bigger deal than gus edwards to me is losing marcus peters who is one of my least favorite players in the league but my gosh he is fantastic. Gives the steelers fits. But he's so good as a steeler fan. I wanna beat the baltimore ravens straight up head to head full strength but with this thing said we're going to vegas. Team has little weird team but they invaded for. They have enough firepower. They have a former raven. Darren waller that is tearing things up as one of the best tight ends in the league. Right now derek. Park could make things happen. Josh jacobs makes things happen. This is going to be really fantastic. Ripple game as far as viewing. Because you still have a guy. Like lamar. Jackson the can take the game into his own hand and mark andrews who just signed that new contract. He's the guy that if they connect over the middle over and over. There's no stopping than either. So even though the ravens are hurting right now. I am not counting out for the twenty twenty one season and that's really hard for me to do because once again i live in maryland my favorite team in fact not my favorite anything else. Brian anthony davis. Let's play a national day. Today is national. Tv dinner day. I had a tv dinner in a long time. But i gotta tell you. There was a time in the mid eighties. Where i was loving. Tv dinners now. I wasn't like a hungry man paper guy. But i i like those little pasta dishes that you can go ahead and peel off the corner and and in the eighties i. I started doing those like the french bread. Supreme pizzas from like stover's my thing. Well certainly they have kept the name. The types have changed and there are various. Ones out there. But your question. Multiple choice is going to be. Which brand is the most popular in the us as we speak is it. Banquet is it. Offers is marie calendar's..

"To pop culture cosmos where we got a great episode right. Now got lots to talk about including abandoned the ps five-game which a lot of people right now that had i hope for are thinking about abandoning. So we'll talk about that coming up on the back end. The show plus also is well. We're gonna be talking about split gate and it looks very familiar to a lot of people but it's got a new little trick and that little trick is also helping propel it become a very popular game. How popular and how. Well we'll go over. We're going to talk about that on the back into the show as well. But my friend is ryan reynolds. It is free guy at the box office. They earned at what analysts. Were not predicting fact. It went above their predictions. Because it looked like it was going to be a movie that was going to debut somewhere in the teens. But i said myself. I i thought it was going to be somewhere in the teens. Low twenties but it actually kind of surprised people out there. It's actually earned a little bit more than the suicide squad at twenty eight million dollars here. Domestically the box office and earn Around fifty to fifty two million worldwide and first weekend and disney has already spoken in reached out to both director shawn levy and also as well mr ryan reynolds about creating a sequel to free guy. So if you really enjoyed free guy. And he got a chance to see it. You'll be seeing a sequel at some point down the road. But i think that this is a good sign. It doesn't mean that this movie is going to make a profit. It doesn't mean that the the health of the box office is there don't really to slightly exceeded expectations. That a little bit over ten million dollars domestically but even a movie like that. That is inexpensively. Made that movie is going to be lucky to break. Even so i want to put this in perspective man and will i up before we go into a rant..

"When you think about the branding of the creative process it always starts with what we call a strategic brief and it's just like what it sounds it's short and strategic and then off of that. Hopefully there's an insight there that we can run with So for for california right. It's it's a destination of its destination. Maybe it's a real city that's one place. We explore then down the rabbit hole. You go again it. A lot of this comes down to just pure trust with your client to do. They know you have their best intentions and again go back to behavior change so That's really what is this. A strategy components while we do there's an allegation component of what we do and then there's an execution component to what we do and they're all very very different parts of the process. I'm sure there's been great ideas we'll never know about because he just the execution was so shitty that it's a slight while that could have been a funny idea but you know the money wasn't there that in get like the cast in it wrong or the language is wrong or they tried to say everything at once and i think it's like that's where the discipline with creativity really comes in and like what works on you. And how do i get you to the next part of the story And i think that's the beauty of of marketing. Today is are so many places where you could tell your story. I helped work with him when he was working. For billing morris and managing all the horse publications ryan is now one of the most recognized and celebrated sales trainers and revenue consultants. I would say the news publishing industry today. He is president and founder of bring swell media he. Ceo and founder of sales training world. And the ain't going to ask him about. This is an emmy award winner as well. We've spoken to him before an emp reports. But last time it was during kothe now that we're finally on the backside how to sell in a post covid world and we're gonna talk about some basic sales strategies as well as good management tactics. Yup one old sales guy talking to another. But i really enjoyed this interview and i hope you see value in it as well as ian reports goes one on one with mr ryan. This is one of my favorite guests. And i mean this from the heart and by the way i should pay you commission but i can't afford it but when i talked to ryan dorn we have some of the largest audience from our audio side and the video side of the podcast so ryan. Thank you for the bren hall. These incredible people in to expose them to my magazine. Go over my shoulder by the way. It's it's my pleasure. I think it's the the thing that's different is that i'm actively selling day. I think that's the big thing that's different amongst everybody else in the business if you're actively selling everyday it's easy to train the salespeople and to give revenue advice if you're not actively selling it just makes it a lot harder so i feel like it's relevance that really helps and maybe a little bit of wit. I don't know remembered back when i decided to get into the revenue generation and sales training game which was like two thousand and one. You're both old enough to remember. Never paul mccartney wasn't a ban before wings was he not only member going to connect. Training session was invited in at one. Which paper in hr manager was taking these people through. I don't think there was powerpoint and that day. I think that we're actually using overheads. And i kept thinking. The sales people's eyes were glazing over. 'cause if you don't know the street how can you train. I mean that's what mike was taught when i wanted to radio. My mentor said if you want to manage this radio station hit the street for a couple of years. Because if you don't know the street you can't i mean you you gotta be enough and if you didn't sell through covert how can you give advice on how to either sell through cova to recover post pandemic selling selling in the midst of it. I mean it was an awful time for all of us in the newspaper and magazine business to to be selling but the good news is i mean if anything good came out of it we realize our even our grandmothers can be sold zoom. So i'm going to get into the world and a second with you. But i remember i wrote my book in two thousand eight your my customer back then when you were running you're working from worse in two thousand and eight and they brought you out with. That was my that was my mba in publishing was the billy billy morris. School of publishing was my mba. I believe you and he magazines. I believe because he liked to ride horses right. I i really. I know you're still out there. But the reason you bought the paper way up in alaska was could take the private jet up and fly fish. That's what i was very smart. Man i mean make it deductible i don't we're going off in tangents okay. I'm looking at your lincoln profile right now. One of my many screens in my studio. By the way i've green wall. I don't know why you're just boring me with that background. But and microphones bigger. Never first thing it says sales strategists. I agree keynote speaker. The best you never wanna follow ryan dorn at a contest. Especially when he's passing cash out to the audience. Say all right. Am i do in thirty seconds. But any winner here. The hell did that. Come from is emmy some lady in your neighborhood. That said you win. You know terrorists. Where did you win a frigging. Yeah it's funny that my my son still says. Oh you're still hanging in your head on that emmy award back from from ninety eight so i was working actually so went to college in chicago. Had the opportunity to work for w. l. s. television in chicago doing sales and promotion chicago early on in my career before joining the morris. Family here in beautiful augusta georgia. So the emmy that i received is chicago level emmy so they have regional emmy awards squirrel but it was for sales marketing and promotion. Which are those all the emmys that you that never make time and are those that always sort of gets set to the side but yeah so i've got an emmy sitting on the on the mantle and it's always something i'd dust off and have fond memories of being nominated two times and winning one time. Yeah i'll hang my head on it as long as i can media sales and marketing. Yeah for. I'm gonna tell you you know i have a radio and tv background An i study the history of broadcasting. Do you know what. Wls stands for I do not world's largest store. Oh is that right. Here's a new book yet. They started wwl member than those days. They wanted to sell the damn radios so a lot of the the department store cheers was the hugest one just broadcast from chicago. Fifty thousand watts get people to buy. Let's get into it okay. You you and i were just starting to talk about this. And that's why i started the recording. When i'm up this way. I was a sales trainer. But then i. I will bleakly switch to revenue generator. If you really wanted to follow my twenty one hundred ten million dollars had the four legged sales call thing going on but my model was different than like an arrest new revenue solutions and some of the others are s would bring you into the advertisers to room. Locked the doors and do a fire sale. Do you agree right okay. My model was bringing audience into a room. A physical room at a hotel right or chamber. And i did this all over. The world did one in india and they had and create fear of loss through education. I saw the advertisers. Oh my god not marketing one hundred percent right. Maybe i should sit down with someone. So i was a pipeline funnel filler. That challenged with my model was the logistics of the room that they got signed a hotel room. Get these advertisements short for breakfast or lunch. We learned if you don't feed them they don't come right right and then i remember. I did one Was the morris paper of the universities. That would have been lawrence right. They had they had. They had a box over the stadium. Member the arrogance athens. That was athens right. And they brought the out for cocktails. I.

So i you need to know that my mentor. My big brother. Mr ryan is actually going to do a parting. shot today on the fresh macy's but just to simply poos as once again with great minds invariably bop bop okay. Let me just say this okay. Because i've been thinking about this and the injuries and the way. Lebron has led the charge. That the season's too long they cramped it in. We should've start bub. Okay thick about this and bobby. We may have talked about this the other day. I don't know if we did or not. I'm starting to think that the lakers winning last year might have been more an outlier than an indication of things to come. Because of the circumstances they did not have to come up along grinding season. Okay they were. In the bubble everything was set up perfectly for them and ryan. I'll say this lebron james who's so critical of the schedule if you want a smaller schedule and the national basketball association. Here's a way to start. The conversation. labant offered to take less money to play that shorter season. Another thing is it's not completely supportable simply because what does compressed number of games have to do with trae young coming down on a referee's foot what does that have to do with the honest blocking dunk and coming down and hurting his kyrie irving rolling and ankle on. The answer is nothing so a lot. I said this the other night on twitter. And i know you agree with me okay. What happened to trae young could have happened in the first five minutes of the year. The gordon hayward got hurt okay. It could have happened at any moment during the nbc's so the idea that he was worn down as a bunch of crap absolutely. The other seasons too long are the playoffs too long. I don't know. I mean it's an arbitrary but i agree with you about last year being an outlier. You know. we're seeing that also all about the dodgers a little bit. There's still a terrific team. They still may be there. But they're not the dynamo and they to play one hundred six robert exactly right. They got to play one hundred. Sixty two at ryan. Maybe mookie wilson mookie betts. Excuse me is missing getting to play. Half his games at fenway park. More than we thought he would when he went to the los angeles dodgers. You know and it's interesting. Alex is having as good as statistical year although he suddenly doesn't have the same defensive capability but yeah it is. It's fenway is a very very welcoming place for for hitters by the way let's talk about last night's game because because when it was all on the line okay and they are in a closeout game. Paul did go crazy. Okay and you know who didn't go crazy paul. George didn't go crazy. He had quite ordinary game. His greatness from him was far more intermittent during the and obviously without kawhi. It's easier to defend. Paul george but i have to say the chris paul who i know bob ryan loves him robert because he he functions in a world where does not need the three point basket. Okay never really has and chris. Paul had his signature moment. Okay when it was all on the line. I team not at a deciding game but what felt like a deciding game and and what what did they bob. Did they get the lead to seven. I think they got it to seven seven. And then he what. He scored like fifteen when it got the seven after having been seventeen on teno run. He's the one that stopped the bleeding with a three right there and then and then was ironic that it was a three to bobby. They see the thing is look you know we. I'll save the polemic onto three for another day The thing is it's part of his arsenal. It is not the dominant part of his he. It isn't his raison-d'etre he's not set. Step he's he's chris. Paul he's got this is analogous to larry. When larry was in his prime the three was part of the game that he could utilize because he was capable of doing it but he didn't make it the focal point of his game. Chris paul's sweet spot is that is the lane in and is the extension of the lane. It is it is so-called mid range game. he's a master. He went anywhere he wanted to go last night. In that second half for thirty one points went anyway. Wanted to go. Patrick beverley who whoever. Nobody could stop them from doing what he wanted to do. Robert well let me ask you a question about chris paul because you had a front row seat to his clippers career. How how do you are. You swept away by this moment. i like it. I think it's a good narrative. But i think the whole phoenix suns story is a good narrative. I mean what about gaetano last night and how good a game. This guy play booker. we're seeing and monty. Williams is a good narrative. The chris paul thing. Yeah you like to see guys. It's just a good sports. You know a narrative guy who's never been to the finals always respected holster. Probably a hall of fame player. I'd probably pretty sure but you know so. He's finally there you know. It's a good narrative and it's fun. It is a could narrative and the other thing too is in today's game. What i'm noticing and i'm sure you've talked about this when you have talked about. How much more important guard play than ever ever ever before to me. I see all these guards that are just you know just unique great guards to win today but i you are talking to the president and vice president of the eight and fan club. Okay what dr- ryan. What a draft. That was by the way eight and goes before luca at before trae young and he has another an a plus game last night bombing. We're talking about this the other day robert. Okay he does he ever shoot less than fifty percent. Not that. I can remember eight for ten last night. Sixty nice points. Seventeen rebounds he is. He is a joy to watch because he is. He is like an old fashioned center. Two point zero i. bob. That's the only way i can think about it. Okay a more athletic faster but playing an in a lot of ways an old fashioned close to the basket game..

"As the five That's pretty neat. When you look back at and we did this exercise, it was back on June 9th. You know why? June 9th is a very big date in the Gallup household there, Mr. Ryan, Trey Seki. I don't know. You should know this. If you're gonna work together is this is your birthday? No, that would be August 9th close, but no Any idea, June 19 and ninth Big Big Day in the Gallup. How's it an anniversary? Close, Not an anniversary and anniversary of something that did occur, but not your traditional anniversary. Like a wedding anniversary that usually you think about what you said boy anniversary. Um, that was the date of Zach Gelb's bar mitzvah. Of course, unite Honest. How did you get that? One event must have lost in the mail. I guess I don't even know if you weren't that going to be there. Um, and one more thing that I want to point out because this could be a big talking point this week is the 2018 NFL first round draft class for quarterbacks. Five picks. In that first round Mayfield in the playoffs, Brown's gets to face the Can. City Chiefs Sam Donald, not in the playoffs. He was ruined by the Jets, and I would assume I know Rick Neuheisel said He'd be skeptical about trading him. Um, but I think Sam Donald's days are numbered in New York. The seventh overall pick in that draft, a third quarterback off the board Josh Allen decided M V p type of season is gonna win the award. But he's in the divisional round going up against who? Lamar Jackson, who was the fifth quarterback off the board 32nd pick in that draft. And the more artisan VP in this league now has the Ravens and divisional round. The 10th players selected that draft the fourth quarter back off the board Josh Rosen. And I would classify just rose. It is being in the NFL Quarterback Witness Protection program because Josh Rosen was drafted 10th overall by the Cardinals, then they just two column Murray the next year traded to the Dolphins. If I get this time, like a timeline, right here, one from the Dolphins to the practice squad of the Buccaneers, and I think right now. He is on the 40 Niners roster. Remember that happening a few weeks ago? So look at the 2018 NFL first round quarterback draft class three of those quarterbacks in the playoffs Donald on his way out of New York. And Josh Rosen. Never gonna be successful Quarterback in this league, Mayfield, Alan, both that major seasons Lamar Jackson after what's been up and down year has the Ravens rolling and I told you this a few weeks ago. I hate to tell you I told you so. And I tell you what. I'm right. I'll tell you what. I'm wrong. For example, I picked the Seahawks minus three. This week, and that didn't work out well. For this situation, though, when you look at this quarterback, draft class and Lamar Jackson, you know a lot of people get on Lamar Jackson. Team now 11 5 the regular season steaming hot going into the postseason, and they just picked up a big one. And that to me when you look at the matchups this weekend. Yeah, I know a lot of people to say Buck Saints, Brady Brees. Tons of excitement. That's the most exciting matchup I only That's the case now. Practice rounds. You gotta see this playing quarterback for the Rams and also the health of Aaron Donald. More importantly, And the answer, he Yes, you got browns and chiefs. I think most people think the Chiefs are going to win that game. The matchup, though, for the entire weekend that I'm most excited to say. It's the March accident and the Ravens team going up against Josh out on the bills. I think that is the best match up on paper, and I think will be the best game as we get set for this upcoming Saturday and Sunday. All right, we'll take a time out. When we come on back, we'll ring the closing bell, whose stocks booming, whose stock is doing in the world of sports? First up there with the latest CBS Sports Radio update, we get to the great Erica Herskowitz. See me? Yes. Sports sports flag. Hey, Zack. The college championship game is taking center stage in.

I need somebody that I'm gonna be getting a text message Real saying for my friend Tina something that our mother would be saying Yes. All right. So let's see what we have here We have about 10 minutes left. We're talking about Predictions. Here's my prediction. Pot will have a great year. Yes, it will really come back. Yes, I think not Just pop. I think all legal drugs because we saw and, um Oregon, where we are small traces of heroin were passed, Um, like you're allowed to carry small traces of heroin. And we see yes, and what's so interesting there Having such a wonderful time in Oregon clients all over the place? Yeah. D C. They legalized on psychedelic shrooms. Yeah, they're good. Let me let me ask you something, You know, I think that the Congress the house already voted. We were in the middle of covert with all kinds of problems, and the house voted for legalizing marijuana. Recreational Merrill. Yes, it was a sea that came out to say that, Oh, the Republicans they need. We need to vote for the stimulus. At the same time, she puts out her sweatshirt. That's $58 saying tax the rich, but only the rich can afford. $58. Mr Ryan. What do you think about marijuana's chances? I'll be completely honest. There was a time when I did a little bit of administrative work for a medical marijuana company. Mary Jane, come medical marijuana, You know, I look at it and recreational and medical there. We're looking at you entirely different fields, but I'll tell you what. My personal views of recreational marijuana swiped those to the side. I say we legalize it. We tax it like we tax everything else. We make sure that the marijuana is infused with illegal narcotics and other things that are going to overload RMS system. And we make some profit off and we put that towards the public defense, our public education and the things that our money, actually, that is the legalization for recreational marijuana argument, But there's a couple problems with that. I served on the health committee for 16 years. As a result of being on the health committee. I was not really say this is overload. I received all kinds of medical information from around the world from Johns Hopkins, and in the final years that I was there, I received a tremendous amount of medical information on marijuana use and Colorado. And it has been a disaster. There have been serious problems. There was a development of Ah stomach virus. That became very prevalent among young like lilies that young people in high schools, all kinds of the black market exploded. Because they could pay for it cheaper and people were getting into it. There were all kinds of linkage tests by Colorado Medical Society of expecting the brain. We were talking about the brain earlier a zey then, of course, there's the gateway to drugs argument, which People who are counselors and people who are in the drug rehab field will swear to it that it's a gateway think Ah, linkage. So I have a lot of problems with it. I don't think we need more drugs. Of any type, to be honest with you because we have so many other problems, and I don't see where that's that's helpful. Uh, but I think it's going tol. It's going to pay us. Now Ryan is supportive or interested in it for very honest reasons that are reasonable when you want to talk about it, but these people in power are just being bought off. The House of Representatives and Maryland. Let me tell you Maryland, Maryland general asylum I'm telling you, You know this, Ryan, you worked there They are now nuts, and I saw it. I saw them morph over the years. You're right. I saw them more into what they are. Today. They went from liberals to radical nutcases. And today they are really right. I remember people used to call me and say Don't get McDonough if we could just get rid of Senate President Mike Miller and Speaker Michael Bush. Things would be so much better, and I used to caution them and say Whoa, wait a minute. Let me tell you Those guys go. You may yearn for the good old days because now you have people that are really radical in charge, which on those two guys used to, and you know this right because you worked in the Senate. I used to restrain. Some degree these nutcases, but now it's unrestrained. So I think they may legalize marijuana. They've already legalized murder. Nobody goes to jail for murder. They'd be criminalized Crime and state of Maryland. There's no bail. There's early release and you know if you murdered 20 Children when you were 19. And now you're 65. They want to let you out, but you're old and you have diabetes. So, yes, I think I think the marijuana thing is really going to explode. Valerie, What is your opinion on the marijuana issue? Well, considering I think that George Doris is helping fun. That program. It also bothers me. Yeah, I definitely think it's gonna One of run and we we know one of the people that are one of the lobbyist. There's a lot of money being made, but we know he works for and he's a Republican, and he's a Republican. Well, sorry, is that really bothers me? Because I think everything that sorrows does is designed to undermine America to her Tomorrow. He hates America. For some reason, you know, he used to help the Nazis against his fellow Jews, which is pretty And where is that coming from, right? Shit. Okay, well, anyway Oh, Pat, Don't forget to mention before you go off there. What do you do on Monday? I'm not doing anything. I'm asleep while there. Are you gonna be here? Oh, yes. Mm hmm. Yeah, I forgot. Yes, I will be here. Filling in for my friend Derek. Counter on Derek will be back on Tuesday s. So I'll be here from nine till 12 was here all last week. And love it..

Red Sox sweep Yankees with wild rally, walk-off at Fenway
"Going to turn this right over to Mr Ryan who got home at two AM Dr Mike to a. m. from Fenway park last night after the Red Sox. Concluding, another improbable game in this weekend. Coming from three runs down in the ninth to tie winning it in the bottom of the tenth. And Bob, I will say this, but I just wrote this it. This game lasted so long. It seemed to end up in October of two thousand and four for the New York Yankees. Well, let's start with the the fun stat here, which is that came to one two and three of this four-game series took a total of four hours and forty eight minutes to play and it last night's four hours thirty nine minutes and it was an entered its fifth hour in the ninth inning. So there's always that which means the Yankees are back to normal after two days of aboriginal speedy play. I have long maintained, and this goes back thirty years that where I sport. Editor of with guts. I would cover baseball by the series not by the day that you would have to explain to have to counter people how the game went, nor who scored the runs and how the game went daily. But when series was over your writer, your your man or your woman would would would compose a graceful essay tying together all the ins and outs and scope and meaning of the series. If ever a series deserved that kind of regular season treatment in our experience, it was this series which began last Thursday night with the fifteen. When the Yankees ahead three, nothing. After three batters had been strode strident Stroud Agawam to the plate and then led four, nothing in the second inning, and eventually lost the game fifteen to seven with a pitcher named Jonathan holder who had been pitching lights out all year to on the road, giving up giving nobody out in the fourth inning with seven consecutive guys reaching base and five of them scoring ending with Jonathan holder. After a blown save by Chapman, losing the game into tenth inning, all kinds of stuff to pitching gems by the Red Sox and a simple fact that if the game, if it's gone, the other way, the Yankees would be one and a half out, but it went the way it went and they are now nine and a half out eight in the loss. Eleven in the win. Okay, I'm done done them. I'll take. So if you're the editor and you say to your writer summit up in a sentence buddy boy. Is it over? You have to say, realistically, it's, it's, it's hard to believe that the keys are going to bounce back. What if the Red Sox are gonna blow it, or the more, the more the former, the latter than the former. The Red Sox don't appear to be blow team that's going to blow it this year. Yeah, I think that, but it would be what it would be. It would be encompass. There would be the fact that the Red Sox beat them every which way and at the Yankee of a defensive problem which has been around not noted enough nationally was on acute display this week. And of course ultimately that in the game that they had wrapped up playing a game, they like the way they like to play it. They couldn't even weap- it up with everything going their way. You know, Bob, I, I did some checking today because objects in the rear view mirror and sometimes be closer than they appear that is the Oakland Athletics up for the New York Yankees when the Yankees. Mitch. And Bob, when the. The Yankees were fifty and twenty two and I thought they were the team that was eventually going to be on a pace to win one hundred thirteen. The way the Red Sox are they were thirteen games ahead of the Oakland, Athletics. They are now two and a half games ahead of the Oakland Athletics when they were fifty and twenty two the as thirty eight and thirty six. The Yankees have now played eighteen and twenty baseball for the last thirty eight games which is a quarter of a baseball season. That's not a small sampling. That's a serious sampling.

"What's news from the Wall Street Journal, top stories and timely insights. I'm Charlie Turner in New York. Congressional lawmakers have grilled Facebook CEO. Mark Zuckerberg over the past two days about the company's management of its users data. But the questions revealed that many of the lawmakers have little understanding about how internet based products work. We'll talk with Doug McMillan of the Wall Street Journal in a moment. I hear some top stories, the fed released minutes from last month's policy meeting Wednesday, all of the Federal Reserve policymakers felt that the US economy would firm further and that inflation would rise in coming months according to the minutes, policymakers signalled greater confidence in reaching their two percent inflation target over the coming year and affirmed plans to continue raising short-term interest rates. Gradually, inflation is continuing to creep higher. The Labor Department's March consumer price index fell point, one percent, but that was only because the cost of gasoline fell. Americans paid more for almost everything else. The core CPI. Leaving food and energy rose point, two percent house speaker. Paul Ryan announced that he will retire when his term ends in January. The timing of the announcement was a surprise to lawmakers who had expected. Mr Ryan might leave congress. If Republicans were to lose control of the house in November, at a press conference with camera shutters clicking Ryan reflected on some of the houses accomplishments during his time speaker. For me or I the major form of our tax code for the first time in thirty six years, which is already do successful this country. That's something I've been working on my entire adult life. Second, something I got much much more invested on since becoming speaker is to rebuild our nation's military. Ryan Republican from Wisconsin has served in the house of representatives since nineteen ninety eight. He became speaker in two thousand fifteen. He said he's retiring to spend more time with his family President. Donald Trump on Wednesday said that US missiles will be coming to Syria and warned. He was willing to challenge Russia directly and launching a military strike against Syrian President, Bashar al-assad over an alleged chemical weapons attack on Twitter, Wednesday morning, Mr. Trump wrote, quote, Russia vows to shoot down any and all missiles fired at Syria, get ready Russia because they will becoming nice new and smart Trump warned Russia. It shouldn't be partners with Mr. Assad whom he termed a gas, killing animal who kills his. People and enjoys it coming up the Washington Silicon Valley divide. This is what's news from the Wall Street Journal. Welcome back everyone. Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg testified for two days in front of the Senate and house committees about how the company managed its users data. It followed the revelation that Cambridge Analytica used the data of eighty seven million Facebook members for political purposes without user's knowledge or consent. Zuckerberg's testimony was generally received positively Facebook stock rally, Tuesday while he was speaking. But the hearing, if nothing else revealed a rather big divide between Washington lawmakers who are questioning Zuckerberg and the tech culture of Silicon Valley. Let's explore this with Wall Street Journal, San Francisco based reporter, Doug MacMillan Doug. The title of your article. A wsj.com is Silicon Valley to Washington. Why don't you get us? Have the questions delivered by lawmakers at the hearings revealed a general ignorance of tech firms and their products? Yeah. As you mentioned, they were generally positive reviews for sucker bergh's responses to questions in. Testimony yesterday, but the people I've been talking to in Silicon Valley offices and and Twitter and across kind of the tech world, those people focus more on kind of what senators were asking. And you know, specifically, were cringing at a lot of the ignorance or lack of, you know, deep understanding about how some of this works. Now, you know, I think that this is not easy stuff to know. And I think probably generally, most Americans have a hard time wrapping their head around some of these issues. These are complicated issues. We're talking about with regards to data sharing and scraping information at targeting ads to users. These these are not simple concepts, but the way in which you know senators are kinda stumbling over some basic concepts is giving some people in Silicon Valley, some some cause for concern and some reason to say, hey, wait a second. If these people are going to regulate us, we better make sure that they are a little bit smarter about. Jack. I mean, for instance, you write that Brian Schatz senator from Hawaii. He missed took what's app. Facebook's popular text messaging tool for an email service. Texting is not the same as email, but I think there was a general misunderstanding about whether or not Facebook sells its users data and a dozen. Yeah. An interesting kind of point to make it I think is what is the definition of data? It sounds like in some ways, Facebook is using it sort of narrow definition of data in at least for the purposes of this hearing, whereas many of the senators. And I think most users in Americans would take kind of a broader view of what is the word data. I mean for Facebook in for Mark Zuckerberg, he's stressing that data is the information that Facebook has about users, including their likes, their interests, their their their by graphical information that they have within Facebook, that that it helps advertisers match to those kinds of pieces information rather than giving them the. Actual pieces of information. However, I think that's a very narrow definition of the word data. And I think many senators are stumbling in their talks with Zuckerberg because they are taking a broader view of the data is any any piece of information that advertisers are collecting and using and gain from Facebook? Well, I gather that a big problem here is at Washington might decide to regulate high tech companies in their products without much understanding of or any understanding really of how the products work. So is it up to Silicon Valley to do a better job in educating Washington about the tech industry? I think it's probably up to both. This is not a new concept that Silicon Valley in Washington don't speak the same language. There has been a long lack of understanding and failure to come together and have a discussion. But I think what we've seen over the past couple of years is at least a an awakening to this problem and an internist. Interest in trying to come up with a common language. You're seeing things like more senators. Congressmen politicians come out to Silicon Valley and make a pilgrimage to meet with people in tech to kind of gain some more understanding of how this works. And I think what we will be seen as more people in technology go to Washington or go to lawmakers throughout the country and try to understand you know how the world works because it's important that I think both sides come together and and learn more about each other. You know before some kind of heavy handed regulation comes down that seeks to rein in technology in a way that maybe fundamentally misses how that technology is developing and growing and perhaps could curtail innovation down the road. You talk to some techies out in Silicon Valley. Do they think Doug Aberg generally did a good job? Yeah. A lot of people I talked to were excited about zuckerberg's. Performance because a lot of them own Facebook stock in Boston. Yeah, bought Facebook's stock last couple of weeks when they when they saw there's a downturn in the stock, but but I think generally, you know, he has. He has developed a very strong reputation until it can validly perhaps that is out of alignment with the way that the rest of the country. You know, starting to view him more as someone who runs a large kind of advertising data collection company, Facebook and Zuckerberg here in Silicon Valley still very much regarded as a hero, and it's kind of a role model for an engineer and founder driven company that can really revolutionize an entire world and really up in the industry. He's still somebody that you know, young founders engineers and entrepreneurs out here look up to. And I, I don't think that anything, you know any appearance in Capitol Hill is going to change that. Well, he seemed to be rather shrewd as regard to, you know how he dealt with. Lawmakers, you know, he didn't promise any basic changes to the design of Facebook's platform or advertising business. I guess though at the same time he did acknowledge that some regulation would be in the offing somewhere down the line yet it's kind of a delicate balance because you don't want to sound too defensive and you at this point, there's so much momentum behind the idea that there's going to be regulation that it would probably be counterproductive and to kind of antagonistic to try to stop that momentum. So I think it's, it probably isn't as interest to say, you know, I think he said today, regulation is inevitable, but the devil's in the details. And we've heard a lot of congress people in congress, proposing specific bills and measures, and trying to get him to support and endorse those measures. And for the most part, he is backing away from committing to anyone measure. So wash, Lee see over the neck. A few months. If Facebook will be willing to come to the table and support specific regulation legislation versus, you know, have this kind of broad public relations statement. That sounds nice that you know. Okay. Yeah, re regulations inevitable, and we're going to help you work towards that Wall Street Journal reporter, Doug MacMillan joining us from San Francisco. Thanks, Doug.
