"One than i should have been smart enough to know. wouldn't have a lot to it on. Its own gathering news for today's show there only four stories that might have made the cut and really there were no store. Well no there was one. There was one story that would've made the cut. But i'm saving it until monday and the reason i'm saving these stories is because i'm afraid that these will still be the only four stories. Come monday because you know it's the holidays. There was one interesting story for discussion. Loup ventures principal analyst. Gene munster wrote up his thoughts on the fangs. And why apple's going to beat them all in twenty twenty one. That was one of the topics that we talked about yesterday on mac. Os can live. So i would like to share with you that part of yesterday's mac. Os can live. And then we'll do. Some closing dot says we slam the lid on the dumpster fire. That was twenty twenty. let's talk about gene. Munster the ever optimistic gene munster. Is it fair to call him ever optimistic. Is it fair to call him optimistic. I think it probably is. He's a fairly optimistic guy. Where apple is concerned. He is out for the third year in a row and said that apple is going to outperform the rest of the fangs. Things of course being facebook amazon apple netflix and google. And what's funny. Is this time last year. I thought it was crazy that anybody talked about. Fangs anymore first of all ought to fan because google has now alphabet and you put netflix's on their seriously this time last year. I thought it was just for fun. I thought was just a holdover because who cares about netflix's there there's so many other streaming services and streaming. i mean. yeah sure at how people watch things but who cares how people watch things and then we couldn't go outside anymore and all of us know yeah. It actually matters how people watch things. It's amazing actually how much he says. Netflix was up this year. As far as performance. Netflix is up sixty percent. This year. Driven primarily by the stay at home trade. He says now. Understand when we talk about apple outperforming the rest of the fangs. what he's talking about specifically as their stock performance twenty nine nineteen apple outperform. The rest of the fangs With only a day left Expects that apple is going to have outperformed the fangs. And he thinks the same is going to happen for. Twenty twenty one. There are a few reasons. He thinks that first of all work from home is not going anywhere. Which is a. We're not going to work. We're working but we're not going anywhere for it and so the work from home thing is going to continue. He thinks driving the pad still hired driving. The mac still higher that we believe those two segments can grow at ten percent plus in twenty twenty and thousand twenty. I'm sorry twenty. Twenty one and twenty twenty two compared to the flat growth in the last few years. So says mr munster. He thinks that people are really going to get into this. Five g thing finally second half of this year he thinks is when five g. is really going to take off. Sure i mean it almost doesn't matter because people are going to keep buying iphones assuming that there's still money For people to buy phones this time next year. We'll be talking about iphone thirteen. Or whatever they call the next iphone and iphone twelve will become the cheapest will not the cheap. Because they'll probably still be an sap or many or something like that out there but the iphone twelve will be last year out the numbers that we heard yesterday from was it flurry. Analytics top activated phone on christmas day was the iphone eleven and his last year's phone that is almost as good as this year is found except of course the iphone twelve will come with five g automatically twice. It almost doesn't matter. People get excited about five g five gonna be ubiquitous. You're going to go to get a phone and you're not going to have the option of not getting five g. It's just a question of which five g. phone do you want so. He says the excitement will play into it. He says it's going to grow in the back half of the year starting a two to three year iphone upgrade cycle. Daniel lives would say. We're always in that. At this point. I kind of agree with them. There are so many close to a billion. It's nine hundred something million iphones out. Theright spread over the course of a number of years. We're pretty much always in an upgrade cycle at this point sure okay. Five g is going to drive that higher okay. That's fine his next up point on. Why apple is going to outperform. It's kind of funny. He thinks expectations for stock performance or for revenue performance. Excuse me for this year for apple. And when i say this year i'm already thinking twenty. Twenty one twenty twenty one. He thinks dance notation of revenue. Growth of fifteen percent is spot on. He gives a thumbs up. He's all for that. The problem that he has in twenty twenty two. The street is only expecting revenue growth of five percent. And he thinks that's far too low. But what's going to happen. As as the year goes on people are gonna look at twenty twenty twos revenue expectations and see five percent and say well. That's that's as far too low to get on this action and that's going to drive expectations for twenty twenty two up. Basically people looking at going nuts ridiculously low. Let's go ahead and get into that and that's going to drive up apple shares because people are going to get excited about you know the beat that they condense to and they'll buy apple shares. That'll drive it up. And so that's his thing and finally there's the new business that apple might get into in twenty twenty two or later this includes the hardware subscription that. He's expecting and of course getting into a car at some point whether that happened in two thousand twenty four twenty twenty-seven you know either way people get excited and so by the excitement and you know it's kind of funny because the stuff that he's saying one of the things that's going to drive excitement around apple shares next year next year being twenty twenty one this stuff. That won't happen until two thousand twenty two or later but you know there you go now. He also does break down. What he thinks is going to happen with the fangs. He thinks they are going to fracture. And i guess we'll have to start calling them a no more fangs. because he thinks facebook Which has grown this year could be hurt by a regulatory issues. I wonder also a facebook will be hurt by a t you've heard of. Att that's the app tracking transparency thing. That apple's going to be putting into place that facebook is fighting tooth and nail fang and nail. Should we say no we. Shouldn't that was a bad joke and i apologize. Facebook is making such a big deal about this taking out full page ads and saying it's not about us. It's about all these small businesses and they think well whatever i don't know if that's going to affect facebook's bottom line monster doesn't mention it it was just something that i wondered about Netflix he thinks the whole streaming thing is already baked in that. It's grown the way it's going to grow..

"So it sounds like apple and a group of shareholders had fun on Friday as had been announced. Apple's annual shareholder meeting was held on the first of March at the Steve Jobs theater at apple park in Cupertino. Most of the write ups, I saw of the meeting focused on a proposal by the National Center for public policy research, a right-leaning organization that would apparently like to see more, right? Leaning members on Apple's board fun. Fact, this is these same organization that at the same meeting five years ago, tried to get up to spell out the costs of its sustainability initiatives and to commit to focus on profit over every other consideration. One wonders which is their greater interest seeing changes at apple or seeing their name in the paper, whichever the case apple had an answer to this year's proposal business insider was among the sites that highlighted the issue. According to the peace and his comments later cook argued against the notion that apple should query potential employees or anyone affiliated with the company about their political beliefs as a gay man from the south. He learned not to ask people their thoughts on homosexuality because if he had done that you don't have a lot of friends he said, I don't check people at the door as to who they are. And what they believe he said, I care about skills and capabilities and contributions apple focuses on promoting certain policies, not on partisan politics. Cook said, it support pro environment and pro immigration policies it backs diversity and privacy. But it also. Believes in capitalism. He said as for the National Center for public policy research proposal, it fell hard according to business insider, although supporters of the proposal were well represented in the audience investors as a whole overwhelmingly voted against it. According to a preliminary tally released by apple the measure, secured just one point seven per cent of shareholder votes, while the ideology issue got most Fridays ANC, it was far from all the company covered. The piece on the meeting from Bloomberg had apple CEO, pinning an exciting though vague picture of the company's future. According to that piece. Cook said he has never been more optimistic about where the company is today, and where it's heading and a pep talk to investors cook said, the iphone maker is planting seeds and rolling the dice on future products that will just blow. Oh you away. Other points of note, cook reiterated apple stands that it's on track to double revenue from services in twenty twenty from the nearly twenty five billion dollars twenty sixteen. The CEO took a swipe at companies that build data profiles of their users cokes that apple is pushing for regulation against such practices. A piece from seeing that says apple CEO also touted the apple watch and its success in helping identify people's heart issues and the popularity of air pods, which he called a cultural phenomenon and finally Apple's entire board of directors was reelected at the meeting. A piece from think numbs says apple is thinking different about hiring the Cording to the site. Apple is hiring more software people than hardware people. While the headline says, it's the first time in years. That's been the case. The article itself says it's the first time ever that that's been the case. Whichever is the case the ship makes sense apples banking hard on services in the years ahead that said it's not like hardwares done. There will be new max and new I things there will be new wearables like apple watches and air pods. Then there's whatever apple plans to do an augmented reality, which again likely means wearables near-term, though, it makes sense that software and services would be pulling in more employees than hardware engineering. Longtime apple watcher and loop benchers. Principal gene Munster is sold on the five G future and sold on how much it might mean for apple while not the technological singularity monster argues that five G means more than just a faster mobile experience writing about it on his firm site. Mr. Munster says it's not just about speed. It's also about Layton say.

"It's hard to say whether former piper Jaffray analyst, gene Munster is saying that things are going to be good for apple and twenty nineteen or just that things won't be as bad for apple as others. Whatever the case, everybody's favorite. Uncle took to the loop ventures website on Wednesday to say that apple will have a better twenty nineteen than the rest of the fangs. That's the group of tech companies that includes Facebook Amazon, Apple Netflix and Google summing up. His take apple insider says Mr. Munster sees three things propelling apple past the rest of the FANG stocks. The I will be an emphasis on apple services segment. The second will be headwinds for the rest of the fangs and the third will be -ticipant of super fast five g service across the states. Let's go ahead. And tackle that last one. I it's probably the most perplexing while Munster says that five G will be the biggest new iphone features since the largest green iphone six twenty fourteen. It is not a feature. Anyone expects apple to introduce in the next twelve months. And fact, it's not a feature carriers will have across the board in the next twelve months while carriers are currently building out infrastructure for five G, according to apple insider, the two biggest players in the states, Verizon and AT and T only expected to have a limited five G availability in early twenty twenty that allegedly be just fine for apple since it elect do that apple thing. It does take time and strike when the iron tot not when the iron is warming up the way apple insider foots at as with past wireless standard introductions apple is taking a go slow approach and is not expected to release a five. Gee, I phone until twenty twenty at the earliest. Assuming iphone to usual release cycle of some time in September. That means a five G iphone won't be a thing. People can purchase for close to two years from now. How that's supposed to drive apple shares. In twenty nineteen is perplexing as I say. As for the headwinds for the rest of the fangs loop ventures analyst, Doug Clinton things government is going to get itself together and start regulating the use misuse or abuse of customer data. That's expected to hit the alpha and omega of the fangs or really the fi and the gamma by which I mean, Facebook and Google with maybe a dash of Amazon in particular says apple insider Facebook's Cambridge Analytica scandal sparked concern that some companies are mismanaging or misusing potentially sensitive user data for corporate gain Europe has taken steps to address the issue with its general data protection. Regulation policies a first attempt to massage data sharing guidelines into law. The piece continues the US congress is expected to discuss the issue and twenty nineteen potentially culminating regulations. That impact the businesses of Amazon, Facebook and Google. Will apple with its very public stands on consumers right to privacy should remain relatively unscathed from fallout relating to a user data crackdown. The gan. It feels like these guys are expecting a lot here wonders whether a divided congress, plus a chaotic executive branch can get it together on anything as hard depend down as consumer data protection. Still it has line of inquiry under which apple probably won't weather..

"Seri- on home pods spent past year getting better or smarter or both. At least that seems to be the finding of loop ventures. Principal gene Munster, according to a piece from macrumors, Mr. Munster asked Alexa, Serey Google assistant and Cortana a series of eight hundred questions each on the Amazon echo, home pod. Google many and Harmon cardon invoke respectively. At the end of his home pod QNA apple solution had a success rate of seventy four percent. Well, that doesn't sound awesome. It does compared to last year's test in December of twenty seventeen. He ran the machine through a battery of seven hundred eighty two questions a year ago at came away with a success rate of fifty two percent as the Beatles sang, it's getting better all the time. And fact, Syrian home pod came in second in the smart speaker quiz show, according to macrumors Siri on the home pod remained less accurate than Google assistant on the Google home which correctly entered eighty seven point nine percent of questions in the test. Meanwhile, Alexa on the atco and Cortana on the invoke trailed Siri on the home pod correctly, answering seventy two point five percent and sixty three point four percent of questions in the test. What's made it better? Maybe making do more. The P says Munster attributed the home pods improved. Accuracy to the enabling a more domains in the past year as a series of software. Updates in recent months of enabled the speaker to make and receive phone calls schedule calendar events, set multiple timers search for songs by lyric and more. Of course, it could also have to do with the smart people behind the smart speaker, one of whom has gotten a big promotion. Mr. Munster said the prevailing narrative surrounding the new iphone ten are is that it's a disappointment a second class device that will never live up to the iphone ten s. I hadn't heard that. "Twelve thirty four ten announce the euro dollar thirteen eighty the yen won twelve point three nine Twitter. Shares are up sixteen and a half percent this morning. Tesla is up nine and a half percent and Microsoft at five and a quarter percent. Meanwhile, Comcast rallying the most and more than five years. Eight is up four point four percent right now after his focus on improving internet service paid off in the third quarter with the largest US cable provider. Posting a big increase in broadband subscribers. And that's a Bloomberg business flash. Tom and pants earn. Thanks so much twenty four point zero six in one point one seven, but FX is what's moving. I guess we could say off Draghi and that the president of the ECB and his press conference. There was a number of topics on Italy. QE and what they're going to do with their balance sheet. The fact is euro rallied, and then weaker euro dramatically weaker over the last twenty minutes euro-dollar now one thirteen eighty three D X y goes out to ninety six point six zero. That's a breakout of recent dollar strength, stronger dollar strength. Yen won twelve forty three as well. And his pit mentioned sterling one twenty eight fifty one is nicely weaker here in the last number, but there's some real dynamics pin this morning and foreign exchange. Yes. And it's also being reflected. I think in the fact that you can take a look at the treasury market right now. And look at where we're trading with the thirty year with just three point three seven just a little bit of a sell off after yesterday's big move higher. Munster remains with us here. He of course of loop ventures, managing partner an analyst, gene Munster. We were talking about tesla. And I wanna ask you about apple in relationship to automobiles. Because during the break, we got a chance to chat about that. You have the most expensive version of apple play, correct? That's right. In some ways paid forty two thousand dollars for version of apple play a recent not so proud owner of a Mazda nine it is their larger SUV, and I had the privilege of getting a tricked out to the kind of the full touring edition, which is a forty two thousand dollar dish. And the reason we purchased this cars we wanted something bigger. But ultimately wanted the biggest car with Apple Pay that in a in a matrix. I put together even though forty two thousand dollars is a lot of money. It was the cheapest largest car that had apple play. Okay. The reason I mentioned this is not to comment on your purchase of a Mazda but to demonstrate how technology and the desire for technology drives purchases in ways that may not have been the normal consumer pattern in the past. You mentioned tesla not just as an automobile company. But as a company to this going to challenge the business model of companies. As such as Uber and lift as well. Tesla's as we talked about earlier is this concept of accelerating. The Globes adoption renewable energy, it's not just a car company, but cars an important segment. And when they think about that, they have a really a radical view about how transportation can be changed and really desegregated. And so ultimately and Elon Musk was very clear on the call last night is the company has ambitions to compete directly with Uber lift that means a tesla owned fleet. So they own the cars, and they put it out there, and they would presumably offer transportation offer rides of less and then separately an Airbnb option where they allow tesla owners when they're at work to turn their car over to the fleet. That's just one example of how they're really taking the blinders off and thinking different about the pressure transportation. Like the Jetsons. Does the public want this stuff not very many people? I think are going to want within the Mazda thing you did with apple play. Does the public want that stuff? Yeah. Absolutely one hundred percent. I think you have let's say you have a children and they love apple an apple play. And everyone's got an apple device. What are you going to buy? You're gonna buy cars that are apple enable which opens up the conversation about what apple is going to do in the car longer term. Have to as part of my therapy around being a big believer that apple is eventually going to do a TV I need dimension projects that apple works. I don't necessarily see the light of day. But in fact, apple is working on a car. They have a partnership with Volkswagen right now, they're doing a lot of testing around. They just hired the head of manufacturing from tesla or rehired him back to apple. So I think that it won't just be car play in the future. I am. I'm optimistic minute mentioned they're going to play a bigger role and transportation, you're not doing buy hold sell so much fringers versus what you did it piper Jaffray. But where are you an apple right now when you look at some of the parts to be there just ever dominant. But I'm just speaking because they see all my kids their phones of all broken in the last twelve weeks. Expensive. Last night was the laptop pitch at dinner. And you're resisting this because you're to give in later or. What's the point? I need a need a new laptop talking to Mr. Munster tomorrow radio will ask him. I mean, that's what it's about. Wait, wait till next Monday. They'll have new ones to announce their, but you know, as far as Apple's concerned, we're still very optimistic that this stock is got a lot of room to go higher. It could be multiple times bigger as hard as that is to believe there's a shift in terms. Our investors are thinking about this instead of the anxiety around what the iphone numbers in a given quarter. They're starting to get more comfortable that it's going to be a stable business and the overall hardware and software is operating more like a services business. So we refer to that as apple as a service. If that doesn't fact take hold us a higher. Multiple shares should move higher based on that can you share with Mr. teen? The concept of the wireless ear buds the ear pods. And also the notion that apple is going to infiltrate other. Areas of daily life, not just your computing, but with the internet of things and five G coming. There's going to be a lot of stuff. We don't even imagine right now. Yeah. Lot of the stuff that we're not imagining right now is around chance for -tations one also wearables as you said, air pilots have been just an absolute grand slam for the company, and they're going to continue to evolve on that. But the watches surprisingly accelerating in growth that was recently at apple store. There is a gentleman there in his ninety s and he's looking at a watching the salesperson was having a hard time explaining how to actually charge the watch. And I asked him why he's buying it. And he said it's for fall detection this new feature that they added. So they are coming up with products that fit a lot of areas of our lives that you would never have thought of a decade. Is it bad that eleven year old is pitching me on kebab? We need to get the new one because it's got six core and quad core processors. I mean, these kids are all about the fact that they were able to put those words together in a sentence. If I can just do a quick sidebar. So you can't talk to somebody who is more optimistic about the future positive impact technology in our lives. I think that I'm Betty my career ventures down that that says we are doing more work on the tech addiction problem. This is very real. You've seen some smile adjustments to products that Apple's had on the software level to try to help manage addiction. But ultimately, I think it's a hardware problem. And so what I think we're getting into as a period. Hopefully, where people recognize some of the the damage that we're doing with our constant usage of these devices is where's the technology loop on this every new core processors, they do this from an engineering standpoint? There's gotta be a shelving. There's gonna be were we go far enough. Or is it not? They're just forever better. And better I'm gonna campus forever better. And better. I mean, so yeah, I think that the last hundred years would suggest that it's forever. The apple X V. I will be just that much better. And it will be five percent better. But that five percent. The new one here, you can see this on radio and instantly. The camera was just stunning little things like that the five percent every year make a big difference with people the the quality that apple projects not only in terms of the products, they produced, but the comments and the thoughtfulness of their presentation. And I'm thinking of the alerts that they send to tell you how long you have been using your device are they the only ones who are doing that. As far as, you know, Google doing it to they just rolled out some tools around that this spring. So there they call it digital wellbeing so Android start to have that as well. I thought you meant the alert data my pet. Does that lurk that time now that not an alert? That's an order. Gene, muster. Thank you, gene monster. Thank you, of course, talking and tesla, and it really talking on technology as well, we've technology which says green in the screen, the Dow up two hundred and twenty eight points twenty four thousand eight ten twenty.

"Oh we expect the home pod that will hit the market early next year to have deeper siri integration than apple initially presented as it stands home bob will only handle music related queries on the device itself routing all other requests for domains like lists notes and messaging through an i o s device but we expect home pod to be capable of non music domains that will drastically improve on the voice computing experience that other smart speakers promise but seldom deliver as for concerns regarding the delay mr munster said the damage to the brand as a result of shipping a half big product is greater than the potential benefit of pushing it out in time to capture holiday sales the level of connectivity an apples device ecosystem leads us to believe that home pod will deliver a superior experience and loyal apple customers will be rewarded for waiting to be noticed by the way how smart your iowa's devices have gotten lately i'm a creature of habit for the past few friday's i've been going to the same place for dinner i found a wonderful year oh i tried to forget most of the week that it exists but i treat friday night like friday night in indulge myself i have never asked my phone for directions to the place i know where it is i know how to get there three nights ago on friday night i got my car before i started rolling i was going up a podcast on my iphones locks green was a message telling me that tr.
