How to Tell When It's Time to Splurge

"In our day jobs. We get to help folks make financial decisions and a lot. The top people equate that to like how save more build wealth. How do this thing but we talk about all the time? One of our favorite things to do is to be that voice reason that tells tells people when they can take their foot off the pedal where they can actually enjoy some of the fruits of their labor. We just did a show. That's always were to the show ideas. Come from what we just on that show. We're I I was very self confessional about the fact that I'm no longer consider myself a tight. What now if you were attending the livestream I still have a lot of tightwad tendencies? I just can't get those out of my system but it is one of those things where I love it when we talked about this in pre show planning we are now that you unleashed windy. We tell clients that they could actually spend. When do we tell people we're going to be able to that? Ought to be a show. When do we actually get to live like no one else? We hear these things. You're saving saving saving but Wendy. When do you start to put that needle over to? It's okay and give yourself permission. Because that's the biggest thing one of the favourite parts of being financial advisor. Here's the negative. You have to tell people. They're spending too much but there is a huge positive. Actually for a lot of our clients is that they've been so good at accumulating assets. They actually have a hard time. Tom Breaking the habit of building that we tell them. It's okay to start consuming contrite and I love it when we get to break that point to them I think one of the common misnomers that people have is that oh well that happens at retirement or that happens at the financial independence. Were actually going to talk to you today. About not only. Does it happen there. But they're actually times throughout your accumulation accumulation journey throughout your building journey. Where you can give yourself the freedom even if you're young even if you're early on even if you're in the beginning stages where it's okay to spin so long asks you're doing the things you're supposed to do so let's jump right into these and I was so excited about this slide? And here's the first slide is is foosteps are followed by the way. Here's what I think is awesome. I'd like to tell you my entire life is very. I can't say Mr Magoo because I just gotten to be so old forrest gump might very well become. It's kind of getting everyone recognize but I do feel like I m the accidental success story on most things and once again I've stumbled into something awesome is that we've been talking about for years. Financial Order of operations. I mean it is one of the if I call it money guy won a one. You want to understand financial order of operations. One of our. I came here it was youtube or podcast world but money got family members said we love the foosteps house. Like Oh oh my gosh. This is one step closer today Grohl because it is because when I do all this stuff completely by accident I'm like this means that Dave Grohl on are meant to be best friends. Ah I mean it really is a son that we're supposed to thunder Dave. If you're listening we'd love to have you on the show. So let's talk about this because I do WanNa talk about well. Financial Order of operations. This is one of those things and we're going to go much deeper in this. I've got some things in the works even late last night I was working on some ideas with his financial order of operations and I wanted to kind of go through this rather quickly and we know that we have other resources in the past that people can look into but this is when we talk about financial order of operations. But let's go through these pretty quickly and science sign number. One is not that you've completed it but that you are following the steps correctly and so in order to know if you're following the steps correctly you have to actually know what the steps are so step number one of the money orders. Operations is the deductibles covered You WanNa make sure that you have that money set aside that can get you out of the ditch if things things are going haywire you at least have enough to cover health insurance deductibles auto deductibles homeowners deductibles whatever's required. If there were a catastrophic event you have it there to get you out of the pitch this is where you know most people we know the stats. I'M GONNA cover it in a minute. Most people can't come up with a thousand dollars. So you're right. This is just to keep you from the danger. He's home. You have a really yarn poppin bottles on number one. This is just like I said to keep this thing from running aground and remember because I don't think I set up the the the financial order of operations. What makes this so foundational? Is that just like we talk about time. We think a lot of finances very math. Based I mean matter of fact people get onto onto they say no behavior behavior. Well Yeah we get the behavior but if you're not taking if you're neglecting the maths or you are doing this thing all wrong and that's why we just spoke. Oh could a group of structural engineers. We got hard to come up and talk about that. In the first thing we did was we showed him a math equation. That had exponents in it. It had parentheses it had multiplication tables had division had some subtraction and addition and we ask them we said how in the world did you guys know how to do this and and they all were able to say you know I was ordered. Operation is us which was an always. Screw this up but it's like please excuse my dear aunt sally you nailed it see. That's the first time I've ever heard you get it right so but it's the same thing so I wanted to give the context so that everybody understood. Why is this so powerful finances finances is the same as the way you do order of operations with math? You need to do it in the right order so you actually make your system as efficient as

"It's Blazek and bold. Ooh. Deep and bold could be a book as well. It could be a book. Damn fine Cup of coffee. Don, how the hell is your coffee? My coffee is great. It's working hard today. It's deep and black. I think that's a mix of your you and the coffee. Yes, I think that's a pick the word that best describes pick out a word that describes gone. Mine is hot mine is brewed mind is strong and mine is appreciated this morning a multi. But let's get let's get to what we all. Just experienced as on hell would say there is a lot of ice. They're scared me to death. I didn't realize it because I looked at the weather, and I I saw it was like thirty and I said, oh, great better than the polar vortex last week. So I pulled out of my garage. My garage is kind of a steep hill coming out of the underground garage. And I got to the top and my car decided it wanted to go back down. Oh, no. Oh my God. Terrifying because the garage door was closed. And I was like, oh, Lord Jesus. I was screaming for Jesus This morning. And luckily it stopped right before the garage door. So all the way back down right back now. Yeah. So. Yeah. Okay. Well, this is lovely. So I was here for a little while. I was petrified for the rest of the trip. I drove around like iris on the roads. I was. Yeah. I was like naming I look Mr. Magoo hear I'm in a crossover. I have a nice big car didn't help girl didn't help dawn. What happened to you? I decided to test it out, you know, like whenever you pull away from the driveway. And then you're like, okay. Oh, this is pretty bad. And then an intersection I was going too fast. And I did a one eighty. I did. I ended up in the opposite direction. It was like one of those. Okay. You know, you're drifting. There's nobody coming for a while. You're like all right. I'm just going to breathe through this. And then you're facing the other way, and they pass your real slow and look at you like they look more scared than you do because they saw your or do that. The distance. Oh boy. And so then I went like forty on the highway me twice as long to get here. Yep. I knew you came from the the fabulous suburb of shore view out of that part of the same guys lot lots of fish tailing. But the the worst part for me will also as the driveway. I have the opposite problem I have the slope down, and I was just grateful. There was nobody in the street as I was just backing up. I was like well here we go. Did it? I didn't even need to hit the gas or anything. Right down. I went. That was very easy to down today. But then walking into the building too. Oh. The security guard is very nervous. He goes, I keep calling building maintenance because I don't want someone to slip and fall. No, it's bad bottom line. Learn from us. Take our warnings. I don't care where you're going because I'm in Eden. Prairie those two are in Saint Paul. I I got out of the car. I got out of the car. And I was like, oh, wow. I mean, every inch around me was all was all was all ice. Then I got on the sidewalk it was all ice. I felt like on hill. I literally did. Stephon the grass. I was like, okay. I'm I'll just walk into grass the rest of the way. I was even scared of that. There was is on the grass so. Thais you it looks just wet a lot of it. Be careful. Yeah. And I guess it's going to stick around for a little while so please especially during rush hour. It's gonna be a Maso in honor of that. Ladies and gentlemen, here is our winter classic. Ranked I think got the highest number seven on the billboard charts. I held Toro or his alias angel Truro with.

"Thanks for listening. You can get my videos on Twitter. I can't they're kind of edgy. So you wouldn't wanna show them for the kids? But I think you'll like I'm talking about all this stuff. We talk about the one I have out today is about Trump brothers yesterday was about the Russians. So if you want to check it out, you can go to on Twitter, just go to chip Franklin, and it's all right there, a one wad chip Franklin. Anyway, that is me Nikki will be back on Monday. And I'll be doing the show from Washington DC on Monday. And we'll be talking to some people on Capitol Hill and trying to line up. Just the top shelf people for you guys. I brought this up a amenity go about the nicknames. Trump's amazing. And I said, this friend of mine who is a psychologist who does stuff, and he says Trump's nicknames have always been annoying, but effective, and he doesn't he gives people these nicknames because he says it robs people of their dignity and makes it easy for his followers to focus on these weaknesses. I said you mean as one eyebrow gaggle of racist Trumpers, and he kind of said, yeah. For example. Let's go down the just I mean, I'm sure you've heard all these Hillary is crooked Hillary spider years of public service. He mocked Michael Bloomberg as denying Richard despite his service during the Vietnam war, although not in Vietnam is in the reserves, Trump evaded the draft the list goes on and on the and James Comey horseface member who horseface was it was stormy Daniels. Writes story now horseface Al Franken Stein cheating. Obama crazy Bernie MS thirteen lover Nancy Pelosi, failing New York Times sleazy, Adam Schiff, cryan Chuck Pocahontas sleepy eyes. And these were his enemies. What about his friends crazy? Megan low low energy jab, Mr. Magoo, remember who Mr. Magoo was oh, this is easy. Jeff Sessions member lying. Ted little Marco wacky. Omarosa flaky flake that was probably my favorite Jeff flake flake. Think of rappers named y'all flaky play sloppy. Steve. Oh, she knows sloppy. Steve was Steve Bannon trader Mike is is Mike Brzezinski is that his name no presents his co host. Mike's. Psycho. Joe I forget who treated Mikey psycho. Joe is Scarborough. Oh, no. It's trade Emeka. That's what it was. Anyway. From the morning show. The list is endless when it was the first entertaining then alarming, then a possibility then a reality and now daily nightmare. That's the reckless chance of a sociopath who wields power like an unsupervised two year old, but it's not a game. But you got a nickname for Trump. You're ready convict? How about that? Eight hundred eighty eight ten. The the the word or the phrase border security is. Is a tricky phrase because you even if you did we put troops all around our borders to keep people out for so it'd be impossible considering the the the landmass that we have and that people can come in from the oceans they can come in from the north. They can come in at night. They can come in a day. They can come in legitimately through ports of entry. Which is where the most the drugs come through. There's no evidence at all that ISIS or Al Qaeda would come here. Although, you know, there was rumor back right after the war broke Al Qaeda was plotting. You remember this? They were plotting to start forest fires in California wildfires. But now they don't need to do it because Trump has taken he's taken FEMA funds from us. So we will be able to fight the fires are self. So you got a little bit lighter. And you want to do some damage. Trump says knock yourself out. Let's go to Eric and Santa some higher. Karen, Keijo, eight hundred eighty eight ten what's up? Thanks for taking my call. I was just wondering I wanted to flush out what security really mean. We're here. Chuck Schumer on a number of occasions say, hey, where four barks, Jerry. What is that? Well in two thousand six he voted for a seven hundred mile fence that wasn't really the idea wasn't really so much as security as it was to to make a statement about where the border was and people could see it and try to. In my opinion. This is nobody a said this to me in my opinion of a symbolic much like Trump's border wall is symbolic. We have the ability through technology and manpower to cover most of the border and most of the areas that we feel are somebody might try to sneak in. Although it doesn't they're not bringing drugs in as Trump said. And if we're worried about somebody bringing in like, some radioactive substance or something like that. It'd be a lot easier right now to try to steal it here in the United States. We have undermanned the energy department since the Trump administration. It's like fifty percent manned and being part of the energy department is to track fissionable material around the country, and we're not doing it. So the answer your question. I don't know what I don't think anybody can give you one hundred percent answer. Right. I mean, what would the answer be perfect border security to have a, you know, fifty thousand men stand shoulder to shoulder all the way across. Oh, that's kind of a point. I think isn't it. You know, you got one guy who says here's my plan. Got the other people saying, well, we have a weird strongly support border security. But no one ever makes w what that really means. Yeah. We had an interesting. Tapley played early in the show of a border agent. Talking President Trump trying to explain about tunnels and trying to explain about people being able to get over and around walls, fourteen hundred mile wall is not only impractical. You really wouldn't stop the kind of people that we really wanna keep out. What's your terrorists? Obviously. Right. I didn't that year number one worry bioterrorist. Well, no, my number. One worry is being flooded with equal. But don't they catch seriously? First of all, they do pay taxes. The vast majority of undocumented people in this country pay taxes, so you're wrong, but the second party. So you'd rather somebody come into this country and kill Americans rather than have hold on. Wait, dude. Then rather than have people come in here that want to work, an honest day wages, and you're worried that they don't pay tax they pay taxes, and they not only that they don't get to social security that everybody else. Does what's wrong with you, you pay attention at all? Yeah. Pissed what you just said that you'd rather have terrorists coming here. Then people don't want to work an honest day and contribute to be part of the American dream. Where does your family come from? How did they get here? Are you native American because other than that you came here the same way these people want to come here, and you want a lot of terrorists into this country. Is that.

"Good evening. I'm Pat Thurston. I'm here for chip Franklin, and my guest is Mr. Tim Sika, we are talking about movies, which makes me very excited. We're going to talk in a little bit Tim about a great holiday movies because I saw the movie that everybody says is such a great Christmas movie. It's called a Christmas story, probably know it. Oh, yeah. Chris seen it like fifty times. And you know, what I thought it was really good. It's not my favorite Christmas movie. Not by a long shot. But I thought it was a really good movie. I mean, so many people raved about it. Maybe my expectations were too high. Well, yeah. Yeah. It's it's a nice sweet kind of simple story filmed a lot of that. I'm sure this'll be perfect any interest to anyone except myself and the people that wail from Cleveland, Ohio. But a lot of it they filmed in in Cleveland, and I remember when it was being when when was being filmed, it was like a big deal because nobody ever films movies in Cleveland. I remember the the local population was very excited about it. And I think the chunk of it. I think at the local bees. Yeah. Anyway. Yeah. It was good there. I have no no issues with it. I thought that movie was very good. Not not a problem, but not my very favorite Christmas movie, which I think is an animated movie, and it's called Mr. Magoo Christmas. Carol. I love that. I think it's my very favorite and even the music in that because it was it was so funny. It's a play within a play, and it's a musical. And it's animated. It's mr. Right. And it's being performed in front of a live audience. Alive cartoon audience. And you know, the the the composer lyricist for that with the same composer lyricist music and lurks for funny girl is that I did not know that yellow Julie Stein. And a one of the things I love about that that piece is that it's like a fifty minute with without commercials. Fifty fifty two minute musical. And it's a it's a complete full fledged musical that they manage to. I don't wanna say cram into that running time. But it's it's it's brilliantly constructed. I get that's what I want to say in the tunes are beautiful. The songs are good and wonderful. I remember them to this day. And I think the last time I thought I was a fairly young kid. And I just you know, I think about it every once in a while I think about some of those tunes, and I just belt them out because they were such good. And all of them were different. All the song. Didn't it's not like they all sounded alike were true to whatever was happening and the character they came. All of them came out of character. They all flowed within within the book of the peace, and yeah, it's just are typically, it's it's an amazing. I'm amazing thing. It really was. Yeah. I I really love it. I cannot even add to your you. And I have to say. Mr. Magoo as a fine actor. He is you know, I don't know if it was I was talking to John Rothman once we were talking about this. And I don't know if you remember this. I remember as a child this was on it was on. It was a program that was on Sunday afternoons, and it I can't remember the name of the series. But it was Mr. Magoo every week. It was Mr. Magoo playing a different famous literary carrot. Oh, no. I don't remember that. I remember the the little cartoon show where he drove in that little car that are. I didn't know that he played a different veterinary care. He played gun. Good. Then he played all these all these different characters. And and that was. Mr. Magoo was amazing. And he performed these roles in the character of Mr. Magoo, and they were all really, believable and credible. And just amazing. And I remember as a child watching that show, and it making me go to the library to get books about the that were being portrayed in that. So that good. I mean, that's when you know, they've done a great job when they when they cause you to do something positive like that to learn more. I love that that that makes me very very happy. So what's your very favorite holiday movie? My very very. Can't say the same one. You have to pick a different one. I should have. I should have a ready answer for that. But I'm just going to say the first one that comes to mind, that's obvious. Anybody to listen to always go on that? I really love musicals musical version of a Christmas. Carol Charles Dickens called Scrooge that came out in nineteen seventy with Albert Finney as screwed yet. He plays. He plays the older Scrooge in the younger Scrooge to yes. And yeah. Alec Guinness plays Marley's ghost, and it's just a rollicking fun beautifully mounted. Have to bring that one out again because I remember seeing it and I remember loving it. But I don't remember it specifically. So I'm going to have to get it out. And listen to you know, it's funny when it first came out, I thought it was a little bloated. And and I was kind of critical of it. But over the years, I kept returning to it. And I love it. I try to watch it every every Christmas season. I miss this year this year didn't even seem way Christmas. It went by so fast. It's one that I keep going back to I love the score. Leslie, Bricusse did the music and lyrics, and I think he wrote the screenplay to which is an adaptation of Charles Dickens Christmas. Carol. It's a big hit song from that was. Thank you very much as it go. I'm not gonna sing come on. When we come back from the break, we should come back from the break with that song. It's called. Thank you very much. Karen, doesn't like to be told what to play. I'm sorry. You can play whatever you want. What's it called you very much? Thank you very much. It's from Scrooge. It's from Scrooge. And it's once you hear the tune you can't get it out of your head. It's one of those ear worms. It's like it was small world. Oh god. It can't be that bad. Listen, let's get a phone call here. This is Evan. He's calling from Santa Rosa Evan. Hi. Welcome to KTAR, you're on with Tim Sika, Pat, Thurston. Go ahead. I'm calling because every time I ever hear talk show host mentioned that every Christmas. We almost always mentioned Christmas story. And it's a good movie. Don't get me wrong. I like it, but jingle all the way was Arnold Schwarzenegger's totally under appreciated. It may be the funniest person you ever. An incidentally funnier than Christmas story. Do you ever seen jingle all the way with all sorts nigger? I don't think Tim has. Timbo funny. It is it's very very funny. It's very light. It's very seasonal. Yeah. What else? I mean. Elf is very funny health is good too. But it's not as good as jingle all the way. I do what about bad Santa well bad Santa's filthy. That's true. I mean, it's a nasty movie. And that's why it's so funny because you have this like drunk profane Santa Claus. I mean, it's like, yeah. That's thornton. Yeah. I don't think I saw jingle all the way Evan. So you have inspired me. And I'm putting that on my list. So that I can see it. I'm so glad you brought that up and don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that a Christmas story is one of my favorites. I'm just saying I finally watched it, and it was good. It was really good. It wasn't great. But it was really good. Hey, Tim before we go back to more of my nonsense. Let's talk about on the basis of sex on the basis upset what would I mean? What do you want to talk about on the basis of that a new movie? Yes. It is. You're trying to trick me. It is. It's it's a movie about Ruth, Bader Ginsburg. It's about her early life. And it's good. It's not to be confused with our BG, right? Which is the documentary about about supreme court Justice Ginsburg. This is a movie a narrative featured selected by Mimi Leder. It starts Felicity Jones as a young Ruth Ginsburg and Armie hammer as her husband, and the movie focuses on nineteen seventy case that she argued in court with her husband about sex discrimination. Only it involved a man, right? And this is another one of those movies. I kinda hate to rag on and I'm sort of tempted to because a lot of it in in terms of its style. And it's like safe kinda mainstreaming approaches kind of pedestrian, but the story of a young Ruth Ginsburg of a lawyer in the fifties in the United States, and what she went through the sexism. She endured the fight she had the wage personally to even practice law. Nobody would hire this woman, even though she was number one in her Harvard Law School group, and she was a hell of a lot. Smarter than all the men that she had to deal with the movie goes into her amazing work in in striking down all these discriminatory laws based on gender and all of that makes this movie worth seeing and celebrating. I think particularly I think young girls would absolutely love this movie. This woman was amazing is still as everybody knows that already. But she is. I mean, she's truly she's the notorious RPG, and and it is a people really now are appreciating here. But look how long it took. I mean, really, and what I like about this movie is that it focuses on her her early life and her relationship with her husband who had a cancer scare early in their marriage. And so what's interesting, and I didn't know what she did in order for her husband to stay in the law game. She attended classes for him. So she was not only doing her own work in trying to get her law degree. She was doing his work for him while he was recuperating. And then she would go home at night. And they'd go over all these briefs and stuff. She's I mean, and I love RGB our BG. I mean, the the documentary I love the fact that this focused on her her her early career because very little of that I knew about in except in a general way, and the acting is very good. I you know, I when I watched this movie I thought man, I wish I had young daughters. I would just, you know, take them to see this. And let them see many times. I guess I have been told because I'm gonna take my daughters to it. All right. Hang on, Tim. I gotta take a little break here. And I see we may have other phone calls coming in at eighty eighty eight ten. I'm Pat Thurston. Tim Sika is my guest is website is celluloiddreams dot net. And you're listening to GO Pat.

"Have had to consider leaving as the attorney general had trump ousted rosenstein this person said tonight story says the president has derisively nicknamed jeff sessions mr magoo and rod rosenstein mister peepers and about sessions the president has been famously willing to publicly thrash his attorney general ever since he recused himself from the russia investigation and on the day of that rate involving trump's attorney michael cohen he went at him again he should have certainly let us know if he was going to recuse himself and we would have used a put a different attorney general and so he made what i consider to be a very terrible mistake for the country but you'll figure that out this new reporting on sessions reminds us that president trump is facing a number of serious legal battles that could pose a grave danger to his presidency the fbi raid which as the washington post mentioned was approved by rod roseanne stein was part of a larger criminal investigation into michael cohen by federal prosecutors in new york the washington post also reports tonight the former attorney for porn star stormy daniels and playboy model karen mcdougal who were both by the way paid to keep quiet about their alleged affairs with donald trump says he has been cooperating with those new york prosecutors it's been reported that many of the president's allies fear that case may ultimately be more damaging to him the new york ace than even the muller investigation writ large and that some even believed that cohen might start cooperating with the feds earlier on this network tonight harvard law professor alan dershowitz told us that that could be why trump recruited rudolph giuliani as counsel and the russia case.

"What possible scenario can you envision where we wouldn't supply you with steel and aluminum so let's go back to what the to thirty two does when we talked about it just a few minutes ago we said national security and economic security broadly defined and that includes having a strong manufacturing in the defence industrial base inside our borders jake inside our borders and so in the alone in case we have a situation now where import penetration is over ninety percent we are we are literally on our last legs and canada it is forty percent in the market and if you exempt canada then you have to put big big tariffs and everybody out so this is this is a a measure targeted approach lawrence kudlow arthur laffer steven more three of them all three of them economists big supporters of president trump campaign advisers to president trump they wrote in a cnbc article this weekend quote fresno trump genuinely believes that his steel and aluminum tariffs will save thousands of bluecollar jobs but even if tariffs save every one of the one hundred forty thousand or so steel jobs in america it puts at risk five million manufacturing and related jobs and industries that use steel and this is an argument that you hear from a lot of republicans your you might be protecting hundred and forty thousand americans and hurting millions more sure and i know where you're know steve waugh we were brothers in arms during the campaign and i'm totally in sync with them as president is on things like deregulation and tax cuts learn steve never ever supported the president on trade and when the president ran against sixteen other republican candidates el sixteen of those canada's didn't didn't embraces trade agenda either a guess what he beat them so larry steve they can have their their points of view and i agree with that but they're dead wrong on the economics because there's no downstream affects year there's.

"Essential and great event at the white house with with the president the president was getting ready to make his final decision and wanted to touch base with the executives aluminum steel industry in so we brought them in to the cabinet room and we had a a wonderful discussion uh about uh the options on the table and uh the general consensus in the room that president heard was tariffs rather than quotas and that they should be across the board with no country exemptions president heard that loud and clear there's some really good reasons for doing all at and that's the direction uh the president to a uh at the end of the meaning so there's going to be no exemptions that's what is going to look like at the other wish the difference between exemptions and country exclusions they'll be it exemption procedure of four particular cases where we need to have exemptions so that business can can move forward uh but at this point in time there be no country excu asians president trump has pointed to chinese overproduction of steel is one of the major reasons for the tariffs take a lesson i will make a decision that reflects the best interest of the united states including the need to address overproduction in china and other countries you have countries that are so overproducing and what they're doing it is they're dumping it on us now i don't need to tell you this with china only accounts for two percent of us steel imports it's not even in the top ten importers of steel in this country and i think there are a lot of allies of the us especially perhaps canada and south korea who are saying this is going to hurt us us allies candid in south korea what much more than it's gonna hurt china so the bigger picture here is that china his has tremendous overcapacity in both the luhn in steel and so what they do is they flood the world market with this product can net ripples down to this to our shores in two other countries and so china is in many ways the root of the problem in both alone.
