"The junior high teaching to seventh graders were you and i had our interaction and part of your day teaching mechanical drawing to high school students in another building at high school. Were you worried about the future of those programs at the time that it seemed like they were on the way out. I was really worried about the program until like the mid mid nineties simply because i had taught two classes at the senior high school one was called outdoor. Living in the other one was engineering. Drawing what are you worried that they were going to close the shop and move out all. The machinery assured that actually happened again. It's one of the reasons that i did retire simply because some now what they did then is i retired. I know as i said. I still working for the maintenance department. So so we wind up. We wound up doing a lot of renovations or helping with the revelations the shot class into a different classroom. Right sure did. That's now banned room and very cook all the machinery everything and put in storage and i wished had access to that storage area so the so that we could use it and then They start hiring new people. So did you talk about with either fellow industrial arts teachers or your colleagues at the quaker valley where you were a teacher about this situation where their concerns about taking this hands on opportunity away students. Oh sure they were. Alan on a lot of them said but they were really warned that word divided because they were about ten years of or about flash six years older than me and they were thinking about retirement in a year or two show. It really wasn't a concern to them or at them. And do you know if any of the schools in the area of western pennsylvania still have like high school or junior high shop class. I know there are vocational programs. Of course usually students go to a different school but do any of them have shop in the building. There are in some of the big schools where you know. They have quite a bit of capital quite a bit of money. Are i mean students around. Yeah the all surrounding of state have That program still there. When i think back to some of the awesome things we did there i i did. Forging with gas ford's a cast aluminum. An sand molds. I got to run a metal lathe. I got to use metal cutting bandsaw i got to use. Scroll saw it's like. I can't imagine parents and teachers like allowing kids to do this kind of stuff today. Did it seem odd to you at the time or was it just normal. no just. that's the way we were brought up in california we had to do. A project was was are passing great and if we didn't do that project you to reschedule it for the next semester and So they're levers. Many many nights spent in the foundry at night ramming them all so that we do. Because the first one didn't work well then machining and doing all the other stuff so we become became very familiar with these tools and shades. So will you want her to interviews. Shaw the kids to ahmad on a big scale but on a very small scale just so they knew what they were if they heard terminology they they could understand what what was there. Were there ever any serious accidents in any of your classes or any of your colleagues that you can recall. Now we've never had anything happen and in any of our our When i was student teaching the first or second day that i walked into metal shaw. The teacher was doing and demonstration and then as soon as he finished yet one of the kids come over and start working on on a medal as you were talking about and he was doing some cutting in a chip got stuck. He stuck his hand in. There and ordered a stringer. I wanted up with glass for the remainder of the time. And he he wound up. Going to austin the. That was the only major thing that ever i ever saw. Rubber happened on any of our shows so situations that must have been a valuable lesson though because it did demonstrate almost immediately that the stakes are high rate. It certainly was the kids. The kids all over. We're in a minute. Wait a minute. Sobers is when school started shutting down their shops in favor of computer. Labs and other Bill classrooms in this period colleague. Mr cowen who taught me metal shop sorta teaching computer classes to did you feel pressure to learn and teach computer stuff because that seemed like where that educational space and resources were. Were moving to in my observation now at this time. That's when i took the class class of penn state. I figured. I'm going to take a look at this and see what it really is allow. Had you had any exposure to a computer prior to that none. What did mr callan. He was quite a adapted teaching us. Kids like basic programming and stuff like he must've learned that relatively recently. Because as i recall he was even older than you were right. He would've gone through school a decade earlier. I guess yes she did. His brother taught computer at california so he has the add on that. Know i would imagine every day or every weekend. Probably spend with him and Finally got the right to do that. Do well do you think. The economy of western pennsylvania and other rust belt areas in the seventies eighties had anything to do with the abandonment of high school shop programs to explain what i'm talking about at the time so many good paying hands on jobs. We're moving to southern states. And i think it would have been easy for school boards and administrators as see computers higher learning as a safer higher. Earning paths students. Do you think that was part of the rationale with what happened. Not sure because even they were offering grants schools if you could you know get the person to right the correct. Thank of wind up getting stimulus money and our money for computers and everything brought in so they figured well we have to cut program somewhere so they began to cut art classes music.

P. people that needed money to feed their families well well well we hear here come the cops now here comes court date yeah because nobody's going to jail these days why would they got hot picture they will I we're gonna keep up with all the protests that we'll be talking to Steve Gregory in the next segment he's a camped out in Hollywood I was surprised he's driving around were you surprised Jones driving around in front of the protest yeah usually you hear good but that enables them to cover more ground did your Intel off L. Ellie PD no well yeah yeah what he believes to be the shoddy leaned out already show yeah yeah they were high media but it wasn't that long these days Carlos covered things downtown LA those are the largest of this afternoon's protest but so far nothing crazy is broken out as far as we know it I could change and hopefully will not I was always been a few minutes on this story because we've been following this during the pandemic and that is people trying to make money off of selling the protective equipment the masks yeah and the el Segundo times did quite a story over the weekend they called it a motley crew of characters have been drawn in to face mask deals we talked about back in March when a lot of governments for desperate to get their hands on protective equipment for the front line workers particularly the N. ninety five respirator masks and also the surgical masks and we all know by now about nuisance deal with the Chinese company B. Y. D. the electric car manufacturer where that's a I don't know where those masks are boarded yeah they didn't meet certification or something and and by the way when you were out Friday I talked to Katie Grimes in California glow she did quite a story about the cast of characters involved in that deal and the deal that fell through with blue flame remember that yes yeah this one though in files Jeff Kaplan now who is Jeff callin it's Gavin Newsom's brother in law he found himself happens a whole bunch of middle men start calling each other hearing rumors about masks supplies probably even right now somewhere right and they all start getting together and trying to make a big deal yeah to get a commission right the mask it's like drilling for oil as just one mask deal comes through the you know they've got millions yes so let me just give you this bra the masks the requested in one deal are called modelled eighteen sixties which sold at six dollars and seventy five cents a piece according to a contract three M. which makes them a dollar twenty seven cheeks so that tells you everybody's gonna get their cut you can get as much as a twenty five cents per mask a commission on the deal and this deal and we didn't go through Jeff callin Houston's brother lost city had no financial interest whatsoever he heard that there was a severe need for this protective equipment including these masks and he just wanted to help he's married to nuisances sister Ellery L. right so that's the connection yes he never spoke to the governor but I guess with the times did they're digging they realized he was involved in efforts to put together massive mask deals in one of the guys involved is rich that's why they called it a motley crew of characters Joshua what Danny Hey guy from Arizona who jumped into the marketplace for coronavirus supplies in March because a friend in the importing business told him about having access to virus testing kits but he started making a bunch of calls and he heard about a possible supply of masks well done he has no experience selling mass but he did invest in cannabis start up companies a pokey restaurant and members only private charter jet service and he sold skin care products sourced from the dead sea one of these guys this is one of these Jack of all trades master of none yeah there's always a good deal around the corner another racket whose brother Lawley says that I'm going to get rich this is this is my pager company do you think Jeff callin knew his adobe brother in law Gavin would be an easy mark to do hi don't well everybody was desperate that's the thing you could do people because a lot of these government officials were deadly deadly desperate to get any kind of deal they could give you look at the B. Y. D. deal would even know what's going to happen with those N. ninety five masks dancer hung up in quote certification yeah some company that makes electric buses suddenly is qualified to make these these N. ninety five masks a new set of didn't question that exactly how do you do how do you convert your your electric bus factory into an N. ninety five mask factory especially when the bus is never worked by the way Danny the author of motivational guide for aspiring and home entrepreneurs to trace his life story which includes a stint being homeless in two years in state prison these are the people that are going to California with the mass the plus size why then did he got involved with a couple of other characters one of his a man by the name of Genoa kick a controversy all sales strategy that he performed with Danny that often relies on recruiting other sellers who buy the product and continue the chain by recruiting other sellers who do the same yeah I have you heard of that before I think they call it a pyramid scheme something like a pyramid scheme where it isn't really about the product is just about recruiting people into the chains you get a kind of that and then they brought a guy by the name of island Frank in a Sacramento businessman who's president of the security company and regional developer for a chain of eyelash extension studios so it's very quick he declined to be interviewed and eventually the deal never went through it in fact one of the guys dropped out when he heard rumors that the people from the media we're looking into the deal so the whole thing ended but Frank is the one who got in touch with his old family friend Mr Callan an actor and filmmaker who's married to nuisance sister Hillary and Kalen did issue a statement to the times saying that a friend sent them information about the availability protective masks I made the introduction that was the extent of my involvement all right I don't you think I was trying to make money off the government do anything unsavory here right fortunately for us the taxpayers are never was any of these massive deals but I tell you the desperate this of all this really brought in the strange middlemen people with shady past yeah yeah because said that because it appealed to a certain kind of personality exactly get everything you've heard and read is true get rich quick guys who want to be middle bed which doesn't offer anything but pick up the phone to make a few calls right right I'm gonna get my twenty five percent grabbing a share of the money as it comes down the track hi I am the light will check it was Steve Gregory next to the Hollywood protesters John and Ken show de label Muhammad is the news many call that nineteen testing sites in LA county have been shut down or will be open fewer hours because of safety concerns due to protests riverside county police say seven people were arrested during yesterday's protests that drew nearly six thousand to downtown riverside Twitter has flagged a tweet about antifa from Florida congressman Matt Gaetz Gaetz asked if the left wing movement can be hunted down like middle eastern terrorist now that the president has called them a domestic terror group Twitter says it hit the congressman's tweet because a glorified violence gates says he was not calling on individuals to be violent we're gonna check out some problems in Manhattan Beach next targets the craziness going on out there all boy you gonna watch people on the freeways protesters on the freeway that's right somebody you might have to slam on the brakes so you don't mow down protesters in that guy it's yeah you gotta talk this.

"Uh-huh and beautiful snares as well Snares are May That five by fourteen dinosaur next and super pretended maple which they didn't make very many of those But they experimented with a lot of things that made the made the naked brass shells and these are just amazing and they sound better than anything in the world. They didn't have re rings on them They changed that going like you know they were still making some maple. Drums comes in and the other big are going up to nineteen seventy eight seventy nine you know in that area seventy seven. They were making some maple drums but they dropped re rings awesome then continued into the And no no re- rings inside but just to all of maple drum and he's trump's just amazing absolutely salihi amazing to have the aluminum Tom Legs on which is fine. They have all the Memory lock hardware on them and everything in these terms were They had great rate endorses Endorses just wonderful David. Garibaldi and Ron Tot Gina. SCHOCK critic cramped you know Oh Gosh Dixie dregs good representation there on the drums. which it's a big part of selling drums as people seen who's playing and then that catches on? Yeah big part of my Gosh. It's I mean top notch folks then and then what happened was is that Rogers he when we talk about these crumbs rogers she just moved them back in Fourth Fourth Mexico. Here there to Monrovia in the end you know back down you know it was. It was crazy what they were doing. Is Evaluating this company to valuating the company evaluating the company more and more and more and more name timely Oh in the middle in the middle old thing they came out with this with this with series they call series too serious too so and series two came out right about you. Know eightyish seventy nine eighty. I collect some of the series drums. 'cause they're very interesting you either so interesting. They made plastic. and Oh yeah the serious to line was actually designed by debut Donald. Okay Dave Donohoe is an extremely only brilliant engineer and And he also came up a lot with the memory luxuries tool And and he came out with an answer to the imports. It was low cost and But it was it was it was a little bulky looking so And he came out with this Knows lightweight okay and so he came out with this design and They call it the series to and And he left right after that What they did was made this Series took they took his design in Rogers made it in themselves and they came out with plastic. Loves the only thing on the drum that was steel. Israel was the hoops tension rods and Nabi on the On the while everything else was plastic. Everything else was well and they set this thing up at NAM and it fell apart and they took it and put it in the back room and and that was the end of that Jeez and So the show is plastic. Crazy thing about it. Those drum sound pretty good really me but they do they sound good but you can't. You can't tighten attention rox without cracking the luck. Yeah because it's plastic. That's operating to these plastic slowly. Tony came out with this series. And what happened was is that as the Wellin- Came into the. Yeah he was a division head the executives and And he was really upset about us so he he came into the meeting and he put on a on a sticky pad sticky things and he wrote one million dollars on it like one million and he stuck his head. We walk into the meeting and he said Guy we have a problem and he had that million dollars which was a series to which they lost all that money if if they were just followed what They've Donohoe at originally planned. They probably wouldn't have that problem because he came up with all this wonderful ideas like the memory lock and stuff and then they and then they wouldn't listen to him so he let one day produce this I they produced this and they lost some good people people over that and I think what's the mindset was was. We're tired of drums. We can build a guitar and we don't Eat a light light but twenty five thousand you know yes nurse throw something. That's a little much. We read a lot of people here. We got a lot of people to a feed a lot of mouths. And you know we've got a lot of drums and he thinks take up a Lotta space and you know we got a lot of room and a lot of big boxes just to ship. Shipping costs a lot of money. You know so These beautiful drums that John Summer narrow designed and and up to the end when he turned the lights off in early. Eighty five everything. Shut down and It was no more uh-huh then And then of course Another company came up with called Iron Music and they they wanted to. You know. Fake stop and you know. They put an rogers badge on on a on a drum set and they were trying to do that and Yamaha came out with their WANNA be browned around. What's it called the prospector? which you know? Close to like a sunlight drum set you know and and and any ill now that you think about that you you think about that about where they are now and then you think about Covington family construction. Good people love the drums. Rum's ladies sitting around building drums and talking about what's going on down. You know I can see and be seen maybe you. Don't you go from really quiet town that everybody dedicated to live there. Y- Rogers till two something where it's not that everybody dedicate your life is unsure. I'm sure the people that were dedicating their lives. It's what the people in. The brass are dedicated to dedicated more to their Tars then they were dedicated to the wonderful legacy of Roger strums in Brook. MAYS Mr Callan he gave it a good world and he got he was making some NYSTROM's you he. We did the best he could to do. Something for Rogers and and just mentally bankrupt so basically nineteen ninety nine Brook Kamei's when they When it took over their time with Rogers and they made some really jumps and they really gave it a draw? I'm GonNa Drown so nice and and some people kind of confused Brook mays drums with other music. But they're not it's a nice shell. the lugs are really really nice to be Joe loves you know. They're really great drums even made a A Double Bass Pedal and Everything's really really nice They came up with the snares. Snares are they had a brass mayors and they had a steel sneers and They had a maple snare. That was really nice. It's crispy I play those. I have them. I'm here in the collection in some of their wraps that they had They call it already two thousand already. Five hundred which light blue and black a natural literal there was like a maple color blonde And then they have their own line of cymbals with Rogers what was real nice. Was There Dan. Ed Real Nice Rogers Drum throne and it's similar to the drums does now but the bicycle type trump. Yeah you know that's really comfortable and wide. Yeah Yeah Yeah I mean it was a good era but the thing was he went bankrupt. And I don't know exactly but you're probably in the mid two thousand is is when all that happened and Yamaha got company from him. And then that's when Yamaha just Kinda ran straight on the ground they it. Would you just imagine You know you're doing a parachute and you're and you're like your first time you ever done a parachute jump. You're screaming all the way down. Well that's basically how Rogers was what it was like me jumping out and and Adding accidents all the way in screaming at the same time. Ah I finally hit the bottom. What happened what went wrong? It was just mis managed or it was just. They were focused on their own stuff. and Rogers was kind of an afterthought lack ACA quality lack of quality got it. Yeah just like a call the and and and that would be in a rogers. Everybody was like that's it. You know it's all over. It's all over. You know last time I saw rogers drums set and it it said prospector on it. Two hundred and twenty five dollars. I remember one set up the music store and they had to Rogers logo on it and the only thing that drum set that was worth crying over was just Rogers logo sadly position position on the Bass Drum and then again you go back to family people talking a great town may very you know and again you know. Let's go fishing and parties in good time and then go to Dayton Joe Thompson passes away then all of a sudden they just scooped everything up and let's go to forward you know and then it was a move nine times nine. unkindly moved nine times. They moved in between all that all that taught. And this is what happens from January of Nineteen eighty-four basically to march of nineteen eighteen eighty five. The friends are Rogers rose division of CBS musical was versatile it became evident that CBS executives at the real estate could yield more than they ever realistically hope to make the profit so they had all those losses in nineteen eighty four. There was a the for sale. Sign out front of the building for sale. Oh my gosh so in March. CBS March nineteen eighty five and they purchase that but Yeah everything just was all over but Rogers is back though now correct. So after all of that The Yamaha the Brooks as music company and then Yamaha got it. And it just kind of fizzled out. But Rogers twenty thirteen. I believe we've got sold again. So Rogers back now correct. This is a well. There was a an individual that There's some people that a guy that owned the name of garage okay and and And then that name was bought again by Joe Chen. Okay and that again is reliant comes reliance company owned the Rogers name which is ironically island. I they are the same company at one sometime owns island music that made the other the other bigger. Yeah you know and try to replicate their guard so they own the name of Rogers and And still do so then all of a sudden about three years ago folks. There's folks Neil there's a few largest runs real sigh of one called Rogers drums hearsay which is a Margareta school and along some other groups Covington and there's Rogers dinosaur renaissance those in Rochester and Rochester. Trump's going to and then there's The Art Rogers Drum Owners Group and great grip to and you know there's a few groups here on on facebook and All of us. It was the biggest scuttle you've ever seen him was like all awesome like people running outside to see if there's a Ufo you know all of us doing popped up on everybody's feed the return of the legend Rogers drums and we were like well. Yeah what's going on here. Aliens do exist and all of a sudden people for putting it up in a disappeared so I was thinking. Could you just imagine the person that just put that thing just for a test. And then they see all the groups slide up thinking they're like what did you do that for. It's your fault by father to put it on What was amazing as it was true that this is what was going on? Wonderful Ski Maxwell was helping out. You know giving some advice on building the first sears..

Mr. Callans ever this ever happens between you and I and somebody give private phone call. I ever have as manipulated against me. And it makes you upset. Just please tell me it happened. So I can clarify for you that that wasn't the case. It's like he doesn't humanities exorbitant lies. But he never brings up rest in or anything, which is just so dumb. We wouldn't need the second film. If he just brought any of this up in the last five minutes apart one. Yeah. So molly's is very hurt about this. And she heard about this like, you know, what I'm not even going to school anymore. I'm not even going to get any my stuff. Forget it. I'm just never going back to Tennessee ever again. Yeah. At the drop of the dime. She's there roughly three months this happens. And that's it and then the phone closes out with and several times that I might not circle back to bring it up. They really are meant to be together because two or three times in this film. They call each other at the exact same moment from different ends of the country. Right, which I've known you for over a decade. And we've done that once, you know, it's so these do all the time. Yeah. But but then the calls block each other out than Ryan calls back, and they talk and smelling and apparently has never seen snow before. So we asked her to describe literally snowed when they would again. At this point. Like, you would think that he would have a decent amount of like icebreakers, no pun conversation starters. It's like why does he need to know what the snow looks like it could just I mean, there was they were together on Christmas Eve, and they're like, oh, look it's snowing and then and then when they talk on the phone and she's in Seattle, which is the last time that they talked for seven years and that. They're talking about. And he's like, hey, what's is it snowing there? She's like, no, it doesn't snow in Seattle. But I'll look it is snowing. What does it look like? Just together. And it was still. Well, snow. It's like it's like a blank slate over everything which possibility is there, but I did get the satisfy another square on my bingo card, which is a look at suddenly snowing. So that's that that is that is a over liable. So then the first phone wraps up with Preston..

"One one day. I grandson everybody love it. Everybody. Into it. And that might be him, by the way, we'll have to find out. I think there's a decent chance doing. It was him he without Spotify count. And the like like if he was recording. Why wouldn't they exist? Maybe the more. I think about this. It's maybe not him. But it does sound enough like him where I could believe it's well this I think may be might be like two days before Christmas. It's a big hit. We'll find out later that there were like music executives there. The bridge has. Clientele. A lot of lot of VIP hang out the bridge. And so the time line of all the Christmas stuff is in holidays is especially wonky in this film because it seems like that. Ryan, Molly, you're gonna spend Christmas Eve together eve twenty third. Okay. So they're going to spend the day together. And they're making cookies and one point why it Nashes filming video and they're talking about like sort of like their ten year plan and what they wanna do with their lives. And in what they describing the video why Nash very much says and ten years, you're still gonna be in my life, and I really want lucky and Molly said a little earlier has no clue what she was with guys. She does not want to run the the media company. She says as much in the video, and it's kind of like this moment of euphoria and clarity. Where it's like, she's never even said that turn to herself. But because of her connection with Ryan, you realize jazz one very vivid clear prophecy that she does not want around. Her father's put this on tape. And this is I guess. Gift that he gave her like film. He films are saying this, and like here's the video of this which very exciting gift to very insistent. She washes it to watch video. Yeah. It's like he does also kind of bit of move puts his track as the score underneath it. Like, you know, it's like, you know, give you video of our friendship day. I'm not gonna put my rap tunes that just just seems a bit much, but things take a really dark turn here because I think they're going so well for Ryan and Molly but Ryan gets a phone call, and and it's dead. There's one point where he texts Molly over thanksgiving and dad is becomes aware of Ryan her study partner. She's she's doesn't disclose everything about. Wyatt. Nash that you know, this guy that she's met in Tennessee. So dad ends up putting in a call to Ryan. And hey, this is dead. Leave my daughter alone. Okay. That would be bad enough. However break before that call Molly called boom Preston. And she had point says, Preston, I love you. But all this stuff in the context. President love you as a friend letting him down, and there's a similar scene where we see sort of M O S where why Nashes seemingly letting down Kristen easy. Like, hey, this isn't working out. And so she calls Preston desert. Like, you know, I love you as a friend, but I'll see. Exactly. And then really again, the dad goes for the I e four minutes of film, just kind of being a bit of a jerk. But you know, what we can look really to hear this point. He's less Luther with Mnaya like, you know. Oh, yeah. He records all of his phone calls. First of all sounds illegal. I don't know. Washington state could be like a one party consent. Stay do the do the research. I know you're recording this call. It's like I call Mr. Callans, the could be like, the UPS guy all of a sudden like your I it seems very fishy to me. But Molly Preston the conversation with breast from her father's office phone so somehow dad catches wind of this and manipulates the call takes time. Abby and down and then gets Ryan's numbers. And the whole thing is crazy must have voted it down when he was the text messages. But so she says to and it took me until my second viewing to catch this. But in the he plays a recording for Ryan of that. She says Preston, I love you. But he cut out where she said, I love you as a friend. Fred you tape came in mind, this is happening on Christmas Eve. This is what this guy's doing around, spectacular Sony, Vegas and this phone call down. It's almost impressive. Also joked to that she ever forget their father for this amazing..
