Alec Harris - Halo Privacy & Bitcoin

"Don't you just give a little bit more of our listeners? What Halo Does and how you get into it. Yes sir. So the actual experts at handling were all ruling. There is right. Now they're listening but Yeah I kinda got into it by accident. Which is how most of the good things have happened for me. But in two thousand eleven I introduced to Lance. Cto OF HALO. He was working on a different project. It was using one time pad cryptography and I had not heard of one time. It is. It's basically a symmetric cipher on. It's been around since World War One to nineteen sixteen time up until recently it. Was You know? Each party has a pad And one page of that. Pat Is used at a time as it's consumed it's thrown away. I never used so applying mathematical Sorta brute force attacks to it doesn't yield you any information About the plain text other than the kind of the maximum length of the message. And so. That's if it's implemented correctly it's unbreakable by kind of the computer attack but it's up to engage in the way that I really like it. As far as the description goes is very strong. Asymmetric photography is always a math problem rating. So you might have you know a to introduce Cypher and Died is like the equivalent of saying what day of the week will be on April fifteenth. A thousand years from now and do that in my head but a computer can tell you that because it's a math problem and what one time patters is like saying. What will the weather be like on April fifteen thousand now You could run every permutation of possible weather in one of those might actually correctly but you would never know because there's really no information to glean is just random one time pad isn't. I got really interested in a by working but lance a company called ruined And then that kind of transitioned into Halo. Which was an extension of that and an expansion of the suite of tools into voice? Text video file sharing and then a bunch of things in the background. Did I find to be very interesting? And they're kind of dark art says. Us Mesa where we hide or off. You skip the identity of the people in a communications network Either by kind giving false actors or Covering or office getting true identities and then severing links between the parties so that you can't really establish connections between people in the brief way steig riders. So if I was to send you attach to say we're having a surprise birthday party for by the way we'll shot up to Shane. Laura our good friends have introduced us. So we're saying you know how surprise birthday party for Shane While the information in that text is interesting right that that is actually worth protecting. We don't want to know A. And that's why cartography is important and then If we have someone who is? Let's say politically compromised communicating with someone in another country. They identity of that person is actually relevant so in a security posture. You would want to not only protect the what they're saying but also the identity that person and then if you go a step further with you have someone for instance who is in Mozell communicating with someone. Who IS IN MCLEAN VIRGINIA? While that just the link between those people is suspicious And so we. Would you offer that you would want to sever the link between the parties so that the contents of protected the identities protective? And then you don't establish kind of links allow you to unravel network and so that's that's what we do and the happy Discovery along the way how powerful bitcoin could be in these platforms is what kind of lead me. Into the CRYPTO currency world ultimately got US talking But I'll just pause there when we can talk about. Bitcoin obviously forever. But that's kind of what I've been up to and it's led me into being. You know someone who cares a lot about five AC- admittedly a newcomer to it. So you know before all this wasn't really on my radar And I try to have some empathy for people who maybe haven't had the same exposures in heaven and to invite them into these things as opposed to you know scold people. Who aren't you know of the same nine? It's goes without saying that. A lot of people in in bitcoin in Crypto in general. They're very amenable to privacy Very much care about. It's not even going into the specifics about if you use bitcoin versus Minero or if you coined or not I think just generally that ethos of-of privacy and having some protections online is is important to most people in the space so I think it'll be fascinating to dig deeper on that but I think from the RV that you gave. It should be clear that that you guys are definitely Definitely deepen the space definitely providing a lot of interesting

Life begins to return to normal in parts of Mosul

"Is beginning to return to normal on the east side of Mosul Iraq's second largest city. But it's a different story on the west side. Turn Clemens reports. Sections of west muzzle remain in ruin many Iraqis claim they will never return to their homes after suffering under ISIS teleconference in Baghdad. Army Colonel Jonathan Byron spoke about the progress and eastbound Zoll in Mozell worthy. Bertel rule of ISIS denied many of the basic right of an education. Now, thousands of students are returning to recently opened schools. Businesses are reopening where rubble wants to stood and over four million displaced Iraqis returned to their homes of origin. "Burma Rangers. We ended up embedding with the Iraqi army and basically becoming their frontline medical support. Because they just don't have the resources to do that themselves. And so I was not a medic. I was a I was a sniper. And but I had pretty good medical training for my time. And so we actually ended up being involved in the direct assaults into Mozell to open up. The to open up the western front in Mozell and finally collapse. The caliphate in Mozell, and we were in the city for about thirty days from from the day that we entered the city to the day that I ended up getting shot on a rescue mission was exactly thirty days. And what happened in in Mozell was just something? I thought I would never see in my lifetime. You see evil. You see pictures of World War Two you see killing fields. You you see these black and white photos, and you think I'll never see something like that. You know, there's a certain amount of denial that you have. Well, I saw it and it was real and so in city of death. I talk about my experience of going in there. I sort of being caught off guard. With the amount of violence, and the fighting that was happening, but more importantly, the acts of heroism on on the on the on the side of the Iraqi army and of the other guys I was with it was it was amazing to see these guys down their lives for others. Give us an example of of you know, that black and white film. And then the heroism around it. So yeah, you look at you look at old World War Two photos. Right. You got these black and white pictures of killing fields well on June second of last year it was early morning and we saw a fresh killing field. We were literally at the very very front edge of the Iraqi army advance, and we looked out into this into this wooded used to have been a a six lane highway through the city, this it was completely rebelled and mortar holes, and it was completely rebelled. But we started seeing bodies we started seeing bodies of dead kids elderly people. There was a man in a wheelchair slumped over he'd been executed, and we started seeing dozens and dozens of bodies and so in city of death. I talk about how we got up there. We saw what was happening. But as bad as it was we saw people still alive in the bodies. There were there were children walking around in on wounded and they were in shock, and they'd been out there for about thirty six hours at this point. And their dead relatives are everywhere. And they're they're going around from body to body trying to find trying to find trying to find food as we saw four kids alive and to wound man slumped up against a wall in a pile of about twenty bodies, the most grotesque terrible thing you do this. Why why we're all these people executed at the end. These people were executed because they were leaving the caliphate. These were people who had been who had endured more than likely the full three years of the ice, occupation and Mozell and they were done. They wanted to leave. They wanted to get out of there because as the noose was tightening around the neck of ISIS supplies and food and water. We're becoming more and more scarce. And so ISIS was stealing all that from the civilians, and so living behind the ISIS wall in Mozell was absolutely hell for these people. So they tried to break free and run away. And so. When these people ran away as as a large group ISIS massacred, I think that day there was more than one hundred and fifty people just slaughtered in the street because they went right by the ISIS headquartered. How did did did the ISIS people? I've heard that they've kind of gone back in they've they've just kind of morphed back into a lot of societies that true..

"As destroyed it the which dated back to the twelve th century and it was moving to see on iraqi forces for the first time at that site for the first time in three years um there are several hundred isis fighters at remain and mozell but the idea that the fall of the capital of isis in iraq potentially marked the end of isis someone argue that's a little mature there are still several other cities wanted argue that the fall of mozell the city of talaatfuad becomes the new isis capital in iraq and on top of that there is a fascinating study released by the west points kenner terrorism center which looked at sixteen liberated quote unquote liberated cities in iraq and syria and found nearly fifteen self declared attacks by isis in the city so even when a city is liber rated it it's not clear that it's actually free of isis who's reign james kit field tell us you know even if as nancy says most soul fall has kind of the whackamole affect some other city in isis will jump up an in iraq will jump up and become the defacto isis capital and what about the syrian city of rocco which is the cradle and birthplace of isis supposedly isn't that still functioning as an ice cap and robbery the syrian democratic forces of have now surrounded rocker leaving elsemman recent days so we're seeing sort of the battled mozell repeated is with the upcoming battle of of a rocco which the chairmanjointchiefs told me recently has been going on for many months soumi think it's very significant mean mozellinrocco were the capitals yes there are pockets of of isis still around and there but there are also plans to go after those pockets once mozell does fall and you can give these were iraqi security forces a breather in the middle euphratesvalley there's there's still pockets and they're still pockets until afar out west of syriabut the two capitals are about to fall them mozell within days.

"As a rocky forces continue their final push to get isis out of mozell are charlie diagona is on the front lines and filed this report earlier more than seven months into the battle to recapture mozell in it's come down to this iraqi forces closing in on the old city three sides as they advance the progress is being measured by feet rather than hold blocks iraqi and american forces have been firing heavy artillery and mortars came as a surprise considering the un estimates it may be as many as two hundred thousand civilians still trapped inside dan crowley populated neighborhoods more than seven hundred thousand people have already fled since the offensive to retake mozell began last october in january the iraqi government declared eastern mozell had been recaptured the campaign to take back western bozo began a few weeks later with joint iraqi forces pushing in from the north south and west now finally encircling the old city it's at the very heart of the isis stronghold here in mozell home to the noory mosque where abu barker albaghdadi i declared the caliphate the so called caliphate nearly three years ago us air strikes so crucial in the fight so far have become less effective in the maze of narrow streets an apartment blocks were isis gunmen opened fire from homes with residents effectively held prisoner trapped inside a team of american medical volunteers told us they're bracing for a surge of patients as this new offensive gets underway while the isis at this point seems inevitable the only question now is how much fight is left for the militants charlie dagger reporting from mozell the offensive in mozell is taking place as american forces are picking up the tempo against isis in all sectors we sat down with defense secretary james mattis at the us military academy at west point saturday and asked him about the new strategy our strategy right now is to a shovel rate the campaign against daesh threat to all civilized nations and the bottom line is we are going to move the shoah raided and reinforced manner throw them on their back foot we have already shifted from a christian tactic where we showed them for one position to another in iraq and syria to annihilation tactic where we shroud the our intention is the foreign fighters do not sure the fight to return home to north africa europe to america to asia to africa we're not going.
