"So those are the people who are missing in this whole debate you hear so much noise from politicians and pundits about what's actually happening factor. We actually spoke to a lot of the workers that have been at their early operation and so far yeah. It's not quite lived up to their promises. People describe the pay you being super low they were hourly hired tents instead of fulltime workers this is this whole plant has made in the USA but a lot of the TV components. They're supposed to be manufacturing there. We're actually imported from Mexico and the displays that they were making actually still said made in Mexico so that's quite jarring. One of the workers say that they felt expendable and that there was rapid push toward automation and robotics which likely meant a lot of their jobs will be obsolete so it raised doubts about whether they would ever get to thirteen thousand jobs that were promised for this factories ex-con says it is still committed to hiring thirteen thousand people but it's head of US initiative didn't exactly inspire confidence with a tweet the other day who has the crystal ball to predict if thirteen thousand jobs will be created. He made that statement again at the event last night of course if Foxconn doesn't hire the people it doesn't get the money but local governments like the one here in Mount Pleasant Wisconsin are already spending tens of million dollars on infrastructure improvements and they won't get that money back wouldn't be a big national story but would be a very very big local story and one of those things where you're going. Well did trump work. That would be a thing. You'd be looking at if you're Wisconsin. If you're maybe maybe someone who is thinking about getting a job that Fox right but there are people who are following the work very very closely at that time and then saw oh wait you mean no foxconn plant. Oh Okay Yeah. Let's talk about amy stuck in the middle with you. CLO- Shar her entire hire platform is that she is centrist mic Sentras D. and she is going to be your option for people who you just think that all this Liz Warren and Bernie Sanders stuff just a little bit extreme. She's here too moderate politics for oil and inch. She's also tough and she's GonNa fight trump by reaching across the aisle to him. This is a snooze fest but conservative media is still trying to make her happen for sure Are they trying to make her. VP or what is the goal with her clever sharp someone that the establishment likes and yeah I think she's she's kind of the Joe Biden fantasy. VP material she can go up and debate Mike Pence and yeah she can give Biden a feminine edge that will appeal to Warren's base doors. I don't yeah yeah maybe maybe but I'll tell you. I don't think that Amy Klobuchar is going to sell to the women who have decided on Liz worn because they didn't just decide unless Warren because she's a woman. There's something much much deeper going on there about this decision. That's being made between Gabbard Harris Paris Warren and amy go from you. Don't go from. I have a plan for that to HOUSTON. We have a problem simply through through beat because both people are women. I refuse to believe you. Don't go from wearing go. Pussy hats to voting for a me closure. Oko One step further if you were out of the streets in protesting against Donald trump to that extent. You're looking for candid it with a little bit more fire in their Britches and I don't think that's Amy Klobuchar yeah. She is I think on the right committee. She is in her her sweet spot in in maybe I even want her there. I don't know I trying to figure out like where she's actually useful because she's not really representing anything being like I'd rather hear this crap for like John. Delaney like or or or climate change plan where she is going to one up. God awed by going all seven days. I thought that was really tedious and the fact that she thought that that was kind of a cool wind at throw out there and on the seventh day they say you should rest but I'm not going to know God. Did I mean if if that's what we're invoking here you've got actually rested on the seven seven days so no you're not God in. You're definitely not better than God good. Lord the stretches she is willing to go aw in order to shoehorn align. It feels like it feels like she comes up with lines and there's no would it her establishment. Bushman that is willing to tell her no and as you don't Wanna get a binder thrown. It does make you yeah. We knew that's what we're going. Do only Italy validates that she is like like she has such an edge to her because is she didn't have an edge to her. Someone would stand up to her with these bullshit line. These lies are really bad like they're not just mid. They're not just mid western like I have a good sense of midwestern. that is an interesting theme of this debate we started to see many if not all of these different candidates kind of reveal that they're not letting the people underneath them really really give them good advice or there's a bit of an echo chamber happening in there in these candidates are not fully aware of themselves so with closure. It's the fact fact that she can come out there. With this prepared one liner about how she's going to go for seven days in God only went for six and no was like Yo amy. You're not God odd. It's Andrew Yang and this I'm GonNa give out one hundred twenty thousand dollars on TV. Things like different campaign would have given him better advise on this. It's who we in Castro with the prepared line and he's so balls to the wall that knowing God tell him Dude. You got to kind of ramp. It back could even after the debate. He was still kind of like no. That was a good idea. It was a good strategy. I mean I get a you. GotTa put a brave face on it but like that felt if felt authentic in a certain way but it also was maybe revealing in a bad way even booted booted. He revealed themselves. I thought at a really interesting way with his construction -struction of his coming out story which in the past has played pretty well for him but this time he brought up how he won reelection with eighty eighty percent of the vote and I heard this time and I was like Oh won't know if you're in a small town of course you're GonNa win with eighty percent of the vote. What's that really telling us. It's not that many people voted that was a small electorate and actually I mean. We've done this on the show here. In the case of Buddhist he ran against someone who she was running as a Republican but she was basically a homelessness activist and she wanted to this stuff involving tiny houses and actually actually seem a noble cause but she also was someone who is not a financial means on any level was driving around south bend with Mark Zuckerberg onus car car so the idea these are one to one things or that this was a profile encouraged to come out when he was up against a Iraq war veteran veteran comeback it was raised in South Bend Indiana and it was like the quarterback of the football team and loves Jesus. No that's not what he did here. Pete won reelection in re-election that he was pretty likely to win. Yeah that boy. You've brought a separate once again. I have the chills taken about the the would if if if he was to win and the the question surrounding and facebook as as as the data is or is not mind from facebook man but I think the way he's answered all these questions around African American policing releasing has not been confidence-inspiring with what he might do with other issues that were thorny for him. He has striking clarity on on the issues where it doesn't feel like there are people telling him to have different opinions on stuff and when Pete can think on his own and be his own man he's pretty fucking sharp and I like the guy but there are times where you could hear that tonal shift or at least I can might years very tuned into it. I can hear when Pete's being beaten speaking from his brain and I can hear when Pete speaking from his Wallet Yeah Yeah He. I think there's that's the port of Kamla a Harris that she is more polished it or at least she. She doesn't reveal herself in the same way. She has not been touched on any of the stuff. I I was assured was going to bring her down. The whole prosecutorial records stuff that you know the red rose twitter was telling me was going to be her death knell. That hasn't really been it. It's been that M. Fori answer yeah. That's what's really been shocking. Her Up is she hasn't had clarity already on that and now she's kind of trying to find this weird middle ground. This is the other part for a lot of these candidates on medicare for all. They're trying to find a position other than no. Let's defend the current system and it puts warnin sanders on the strong ground here. Everyone else has this incoherent gobbledygook. It's tough to summarize whereas warned sanders like Medicare for all and they're good to go yeah the there's that's one of the few positives just intangibles. They have going for them. that I mean I'll take a ride get. It's it's their. Their plan is more simplistic. than anyone else's plan once you get to bumper sticker. It's a bumper sticker. There's no other bumper sticker. Healthcare plan public option is esoteric in and I think again at a different point in our politics. It was the right answer. I do believe that I think actually the Buddha edged edged glide path narrative with a different system with kind of different political energies going on the country yet due to smooth transition Fraum Tom the hodge podge patchwork system to a more organized system. I think you'd be orderly like you said this was take time. Oh sorry about that. Sorry no go but like you said Chris the ACA was really obamacare. Was Max Baucus Care in the last episode last episode if that's true what does it take to get Max Baucus in on the public option in two thousand sixteen or good news. He's no longer than exactly but bad news Joe Mansion his daughter. I keep bringing him up. This is important. You know what his daughter does for living works for the pharmaceutical companies. She's an executive so yeah yeah. We already know how this movie is going to go and one doesn't need to go deep back into grainy black and white footage yeah..

A lot of political action that's pending between Lake County in Illinois. And the state of Wisconsin. Trump on stage at this groundbreaking ceremonies that this is going to return, America's industrial might he said that this is central to his trade deal trade war with China because it was going to bring those factory jobs act as blue collar jobs back to places like Wisconsin, the rust belt sort of revive what we've lost in the past couple of decades to Mexico and places like Asia. But for a lot of the sources that we have that we're actually walking watching audience that day, they couldn't have been further from the truth. Trump was talking about how everything was going to be made in the USA. But it turns out the TV L, CDs that were actually made their or manufactured. There were only assembled a lot of the parts were actually imported from Mexico, and indeed the TV displays for a lot of them still said made in Mexico. They talked about how they were going to be good paying jobs coming to Wisconsin. And it turns out a lot of the production workers were just temps, hourly or interns were getting paid fourteen dollars an hour. They weren't getting benefits. And they just felt like a lot of these jobs were pretty underwhelming didn't live up to any of the promises that the president seemed to be making, you know, when I started reading the story turned to Jason I said remember like a year ago, we kept having, you know, the president at different companies around the country saying bringing back manufacturing jobs, and this is what happened it was like June of last year. So almost a year ago. What's interesting is tell us, you know, it was just shortly. After that that I think the interns or internships, people realizing wait, I'm not gonna have my job anymore. Like things starting done crack just a couple of weeks after the president visited Mount Pleasant Wisconsin for this groundbreaking ceremony in June two thousand eighteen Foxconn manager actually called a group of about fifteen interns into a room and told them through actually not going to hire those people full time because there wasn't a work enough work for them to be doing. To be hired fulltime, and in fact to those sources in that room or call the manager saying that the external pressures changing, the Wisconsin project would seem pretty cryptic. But foreshadowing what we see more recent thirty or forty workers that are maybe like out of thirteen thousand when bother me were there ever thirteen thousand jobs created, no, no, no those are longer term projections. The company is committed to create up to thirteen thousand as early as twenty twenty two but it staggered hiring commitments. And they've already missed their first year. There was supposed to have about one thousand forty workers that was their maximum target this year. And they missed it by about eighty two percent. So that that's pretty drastic missed it by eighty two percent. So that was all it was their minimum target was thirty percent. Max was eighty two percent. So on either end pretty pretty stunning MRs. And that means they don't get the subsidies either. Right. So the one upside to the deal with Wisconsin is that they are. They only get the subsidies on the. Assumption that they hire those people, and they also invest a certain amount of capital expenditures, which is complicated and self because the deal isn't just what the state gives in state subsidies. There's already countless man hours that have gone into this project. The local counties invested hundreds of millions of dollars ain't the state committed hundreds of billions of dollars in infrastructure improvement. So there's a lot of ways that this deal is already proved costly for Wisconsin tax payers, and one of the really interesting parts of this story. It feels like is Foxconn itself and Foxconn in light of as you alluded to earlier a complicated relationship between the US in China as it relates to intellectual property as it relates to trade were minus what Foxconn is because there are some characters on that side of the ledger as well. Sure. Yeah. So Foxconn is is the world's largest contract electron manufacturer, they make pretty much every iphone parts any if you have a laptop if you have an Amazon echo and intendo they make all of that. Equipment. They're sort of synonymous with overseas and outsource manufacturing for US tech companies. They also employ about I think one point four million people massive company and most of their factory operations are based in mainland China where there's sort of also infamous for low labor standards. I think you probably remember a few years ago when they had to erect suicide next outside of their factories due to labor violations and poor conditions there in low pay for those workers, and as you say probably the way that people have heard this name before is vis-a-vis apple cra-, the history goes back, very far and we've heard time and again and even of late we'll get to a hidden for probably in a minute about how beholden day are to the supply chain of big companies. Like apple that's correct. I mean part of the big challenge for FOX recently is that the really tied to not just apple. But specifically the iphone demand has softened for that globally. That's really been a strain for the company's balance sheet and they've been trying to diversify. So they're not committed so much to apples for for about fifty percent of the revenue and essentially their business changed over the course of this agreement. And so they made some pretty dramatic adjustments. Shall we say to to their plans there in Wisconsin? Correct. Yeah. So as he's pressures have ramped up, it's pretty much coincides with a lot of the things that were going poorly internally at the operation. Our sources told us that around fall twenty eighteen that hiring goals started to drop pretty significantly that managers had talked about significant budget cuts coming and so those were some of the early warning signs that said, you know, what maybe this is not the best place to be pouring our dollars right now. Okay. So this is what I think is is crucial about this story. The mission was right. I think an LCD factor right to be and create thousands and thousands of manufacturing jobs. So the mission changed and they pulled off of that. And they started talking about an RN efficency, which is obviously not a lot of manufacturing jobs. So tell us a little bit about the transitioning, and how that mission change does very kind. There was a lot more incoherent than that. Frankly, the deal. Yes was for an LCD factory. And also this huge tech like campus that they called wiscon- valley this sort of manufacturing slash orange Silicon Valley Silicon Valley of the midwest. The the issue is as the deal after it was signed. They actually scaled back on what they're recommending to in terms of the factory-sized. They're gonna make a much smaller LCD TV factory. And then later on they said, oh, wait, we're actually not going to build that factory. Then the next day. They said we are we may build that factory. And then President Trump actually called the FOX von chairman, Terry go when they had some words and now suddenly they're going to build the factory again. In addition to that. They've also, yeah, we've talked about this RND facilities around the state in oak layer in Green Bay. But it's really stunning. A lot of the source. I talked to you could not really cogently describe what they're doing one source actually described them pretty derisively as think tanks and talk because I think what was great about your starting. I felt. There was so much from people. He couldn't they wouldn't talk. Give you their names and stuff certainly for the story. The people inside the company what you heard from them. Yeah. So we did talk to a lot of the workers there. And that's one thing. I should say is this completely forgotten this whole story. It's a very it's caught up in politics, the trade war, and this whole thing is supposed to be about Foxconn workers and blue collar workers in Wisconsin. And they've been completely forgotten in this equation. So one thing I love about this story is that we do talk to them. And they've been telling us the pay is low. They felt expendable the company had been making an aggressive push toward more automated meeting a lot of their roles might be expendable. I mean, this is one of the world's logger largest makers of laptops, and PC's and smartphones. And yet a lot of the technical workers still required to bring their personal computers and phones to work. I don't know about you. I mean, we have computers at work. Right. Shouldn't be that stunning. For tech company to have. In addition to that. I think I mentioned that the pay was low, but they also learned in temp workers hourly temp workers on this vague promise that they might get a fulltime job down the road. And a lot of them just say that that never really seemed to material is or they always had some excuse or another for why they didn't hire them full time for that position. And so what is what what do they say is going on? What do they say happens next Foxconn? I will say their responses were rather enigmatic to us..

"This is after hours with Amy Lawrence. It was a big story that the Golden State Warriors ran the Spurs off the court at oracle on Wednesday night until it wasn't until Kevin Durant was making his nightly appearance in the press room and decided that he'd had enough. Now, he's he's been less talkative over the last few games. You know, if it's gone back couple of weeks, but definitely in this past week, and he's frustrated about the nonstop questions over his free agency as well as the questions of the peppering of his teammates. And keeping in mind. What happened earlier this year with with Draymond green and the blow up the team had in the locker room? I think you can understand why he's sensitive about it. I would be too. Okay. Stop asking. My teammates were we're trying to get past that type of a thing. Now, the media has the job to a mess. The media. I certainly, no. But if you go back, and you watch the whole the whole exchange between reporters and Kevin Durant. It just kind of felt like it was it was about inciting him and like poking him until he got to the point where he was going to say what he did. So it's all over social media. You can find that on Twitter. I haven't checked Facebook. But I'm sure if anywhere that you wanna look if you can Google is well, it's after hours with Amy Lawrence on CBS sports radio. Tim ROY on the warriors radio network of bunch of women. Posting on our Facebook page to let us know that you're also tuned into the show. So Pam says listening from the D Stephanie says listen to you every night from Georgia during my lunch break. Thomas scene is listening in Michigan. Thank you for telling me where you're tuned in. That's awesome. Joyce's listening from Mount Pleasant Wisconsin Wu. And then Reagan says, I'm listening sports for all I know more than most of my mail. Friends. So that's awesome. Yes. If you are a woman a girl listening to the show, I would love to hear from you whether on Twitter or Facebook, and I know that we're now in the early stages of Thursday morning for most of the audience not everybody, but it was national girls and women in sports day on Wednesday. And so this this is when I do my show. So this is what I'm Askin eight five five two one two four two two seven that's toll-free defined as here on the show. Devon is listening in Atlanta. Welcome to after hours. Hey, how you doing? I'm good. I got I got on my mind. Like, I really don't understand. Why Magic Johnson really wants to trade the form. Because if you look at the best teams in the NBA, Golden State, Boston one thing they all got in communist dip, me personally. I don't understand why you want to get get around in a brawny Shula's. I'm thinking that guy like Chris Millerton? Maybe maybe currently, I know they probably have to fit it onto capital something. But that's what LeBron needs that people wanna four men with another superstar. But that's not how you win. You don't win with two superstars and a bunch of minimal build a complete team morale abroad. That's about the well. I don't here I will say this. I don't think you can win a championship in the NBA anymore with only one star. Now, it doesn't mean superstar doesn't mean that you know, the personality. That's a household name. But it does mean the kind of talent that is elite at above average. I don't think you can win anymore with just eight LeBron and that's been proven over and over as good as he is. But I will say I agree with you about mortgaging the farm. In good conscience. How can you give away so many young players and draft picks when you don't actually know that it's gonna work, and that's the other part that I get nervous about. I mean what we're talking about. Kevin durant? He mentioned earlier this year or that he wouldn't want to go play with LeBron because in order to play with LeBron you have to be willing to subvert your own personality and your own game because if you're in LeBron's orbit, then you revolve around LeBron now, it may sound harsh. But it's actually true. We know that not every player can can play in that atmosphere. So what happens it's similar to say Dwight Howard and Kobe Bryant situation. What happens if the Davis gets there, and the whole thing doesn't work at all? And you just give it up the entire future to bring him in. So yes, there's gotta be a point at which you draw the line. And I honestly don't think the pelicans were ever looking to trade into the Lakers. It was just maybe about about seeing how much the Lakers are willing to offer. But it seems pretty clear that they're. Not going to trade him there. And would rather wait until the off season to see what other teams can jump into the fray. And what else they could get for him? Right. But you know, what I see that is I think that LeBron is really happened like the Brady of Fiqh because we're taking for granted. We're not understanding that this is LeBron if he can take that Cleveland same last year. Finals give him some obviously the top defense now. But he does I personally don't feel. He needs just a superstar all star. Yeah. But superstar even a couple of those with someone where he did with that same lesser, but they didn't win but they didn't win. And I understand what you're saying. He's he's amazing. He's one of the best players of all time. And the fact that he played every single game last year, and he stayed healthy. And he did what he did at his age is awesome. But they didn't win. Now. That's also a product of what you're seeing with the Golden State Warriors. But that's my whole point is that in this day and age when everyone wants to play with their buddies. And when there are so many soft spots under the salary cap where you can have max contract guys together where we're seeing the trend of the NBA it's impossible to win with only one elite player it not even LeBron can take team all by himself to a championship. Well, we'll just especially not in the Western Conference. They'll be lucky if they get to the conference finals forget compete for a championship. But now, you know, regular season LeBron is different from playoff. Yeah. But if you run into the warriors in the first round because you're the eighth seed the result is going to be the same. The Lakers also blew out the warriors without LeBron. And they went back and forth defensively they met some good against the warriors. Is what I'm saying? There were air air problem is shooting. My thing is if you get Saudi and a couple of playmakers who don't need the ball with which they have been cooled. My and a colony Ingram gives some some three points deca, actually when abroad drives into kicks off and played the on the other hand. They met. So we're going state. Okay. I mean, I don't agree with you, not any way, shape or form because just as you pointed out regular season, LeBron is different from playoff. Lebron regular season warriors are different than playoff warriors. And they have a completely different level that they take their game to it is true. Well, I appreciate you taking the call. All right. Devon, let's talk to Matt who's in Ohio. Matt welcome to after hours CBS sports radio. Hi, amy. How are you? I'm good. Thank you. Good. Hey, I wanted to just ask your opinion. If you thought it was as ridiculous as I did with a loaded question. Do you agree with me is that the question? Okay. Now the whole story about eighties. Dad, you know, thrown all the state at Boston for dealing Kyrie when I mean, I'm a huge LeBron fan. But he really is. I thought it was about Isiah Thomas or. Yeah. I'm sorry. Okay. Say at Thomas dealing Isaiah Thomas. When LeBron turn around at the same exact thing. I mean, he he dealt Isaiah quicker, and he could. Yeah. Obviously with Aidan Davis being wrapped by LeBron's business partner. There's old terrier motives there. The fact is that he wouldn't say anything like that about LeBron and the way that LeBron's camp has tried to throw its weight around at multiple stops. I mean, this is the third place in the NBA in which they've wanted to have a coaching change. And and so yeah, I mean that sounds a bit hypocritical. Right. I think what he was saying was in the case of his son. His son is stepping up and asking for what he wants before he gets blindsided by a team that might trade him. Anyway. I mean, the Isaiah Thomas move was harsh. It was harsh. I was on IT side that was that was just wrong. But you're right. He got the same treatment in Cleveland to Boston dodged a bullet. No, I don't know that you can say that by by looking at how the dominoes have fallen since. Then he was injured at the time he didn't fit. I mean, nothing. I think think about the number of moves that the Cavaliers made not just I'd say at Thomas at last year's trade deadline, but they pretty much changed after roster. And so I I don't know that you can say it would have been the same in Boston. Kyrie Irving missed half the season last year. Gordon Hayward missed the entire season. We don't actually know how would have played out if he had stayed there. Now they've gotten kyri. No. But I don't know that he couldn't have had another good season. I mean, we just we have no idea. All right. Thanks for taking my call. I love your show. Thanks, matt. Good to hear from you in Ohio. Yeah. If you hadn't heard that Anthony Davis is dad came out and said here are the teams were interested. But we're not interested in Boston. Because of the way that Danny Ainge in the front office blindsided Isaiah Thomas, and I believe that was a nasty move. I mean that that was one of the business moves in the. The NBA and really in sports in recent memory that just just stunk. I hated it. And I understand what he's saying. Obviously, Anthony Davis is an elite talent. But what Isaiah Thomas meant to the Celtics at the time that they dealt him. And the way that they completely pulled the rug out from underneath them was gross. I mean that was one of the business moves in sports that I absolutely detest. However, how upfront and transparent is the Davis can't being as they ask for a trade. So straight ahead. Matt Moore NBA insider from the action network.

That's going to provide jobs for people with relatively low skills. It sounds very attractive. It seems to be proving difficult to actually achieve in reality Foxconn now says instead of manufacturing jobs, those jobs, a likely be engineering and technology positions, the private employment report shows that if you're looking for a job at still should be pretty easy to find one. It was put out by payroll pro- processor ADP, it tells private employers added two hundred thirteen thousand jobs in January.
