"Now give Jeff a call it 85561616 20 now. Wtmj James, Jeff Walker. Good afternoon, Wisconsin. Welcome to the show Watts of ground to cover. Let's get right to it. All right. It might not be a felony per se, but it is what I would describe as felony stupid. Now, one of the more interesting trials that we're gonna have in Wisconsin over the course of the leg. Next few months, he's gonna be the trial of Kyle Rittenhouse. Cal written houses the now 18 then 17 year old guy from Antioch, Illinois. Who showed up the third Knights of the riots in Kenosha, armed to the teeth and involved got involved in an altercation with protesters ended up shooting and killing two of them. Everybody knows the story and shooting a third, severely wounding him. He's now facing just of wide array of charges. It's not a slam dunk prosecution because there is There's going to be the question of self defense that is raised and depending on the jury make up and depending on how the evidence comes out. Some jurors may find that compelling. You know, Once we're gonna talk about the trial extensively as it gets closer, and you know whether or not it's a self defense case or or not But written health. It has become a sort of almost a celebrity figure. I mean, there are they raised that there were people that donated to his defense fund, and there's some questions about what happened to some of the money. But the bottom line is right now he's free on $2 million cash. Bail free on $2 million cash bail and along with the bail requirements along it's just posting the bail. There's always a set of requirements that you're supposed to have. No contact with the alleged victim's etcetera, etcetera. All these different things. No. No. Leaving the country. All these different rules that are out there. Well, apparently, what happened is Written house. Goes to about a week after about a week or so ago. Two weeks ago, written house was seen drinking at a mount pleasant Tavern, and he's at the tavern, and he's apparently with his mother. He's with several other adults. He's in a place called Her Jeez pub in Mount Pleasant and he's drinking beer, and he's wearing a T shirt and the T shirt says free as and then it has a really bad word on it that I cannot say on the radio. No, I just I just want to back up here for a second, and I'm thinking, all right. If I'm a lawyer in this case, and this is my client and my client, who is awaiting trial, a trial which could see her, theoretically see him being put in prison for the rest of his natural life. And he's in a very, very controversial situation. The last thing I'm going to want my client to do is go into a bar number one in a public setting and number to be wearing a T shirt like like this, which, um Sort of. Well, forget sort of. I mean, it kind of makes a statement, which is kind of like saying, you know, Screw you to the criminal justice system. I'm free as as blank. Apparently, while he's there, he's also flashing white power signs, and he's serenaded with the proud boys anthem. He's also posing for pictures with people. If I'm the lawyer, and I'm watching all this, I'm going. Oh, my goodness. You know what's going on here now, On top of its originally there was people saw this because it got out on social media as it always does. And the initial push was revoke his bail. He's 18 years old. You got to be 21 to drink. He shouldn't be there. Well, as it turns out, you know he was with his he was with his mother. And the way the way the law in Wisconsin works is you can legally drink in a tavern if you are there with your parents, So you know somebody is 18 or 19 years old or 16, for that matter If the bar will serve you and mom were Dad, Is there your parent or guardian? You can legally drink so he didn't technically Violate any terms and conditions of his release. But now this story is out. There are number 85561616 20. That's the accident. Mortgage talkin text line Regardless Of of what you think about written houses, guilt or innocence, regardless of whether you think he's a murderer, or he's somebody who has been wrongfully singled out. Okay, we're going. I don't care about how you think about how this trial is ultimately going to be determined. My question is this and I think it's actually directed at the friends and in particular the parent. What parent in their right mind under these circumstances. Takes takes or allows their child to go to a a bar and drink beer. Under these circumstances, you know, wearing a T shirt like this our number 85561616 20. That's the AC unit mortgage talk and text line. I mean, what possible Good Can come from something like this. And I'm and I guess whenever I see these kind of stories, and I think, okay, I my parents both passed away. But I'm thinking, all right. What would Anna Jack Wagner deal and I can tell you and in Jack Wagner if their kid was in trouble like this, or forget even being in trouble, there's no way in the world that a responsible parent would take their kid and put him in a situation like this. It speaks nothing again, Say the kid. He's 18 years old. So you make kind of your own choices. But at the same time, if you're stupid enough to do something like this, Don't you expect that parents are going to come in and kind of? Say, Look what we're laying low until until the trial. Don't you realize there's all these different things that could happen? And the last thing You want to do before your trial is show up in a bar drinking, wearing a T shirt like this flashing, allegedly flashing white power signs and posing with people. 85561616 20 we discussed in a moment. The road to the Super Bowl runs.

"Is there some good Polly's picks today? Quickly? We're gonna go to John in Mount Pleasant hanging on. Hold your own Wi San. Good morning. Good morning. I will be listing my home maybe next year, maybe in five years. I'm constantly upgrading not big things. Because I've already done the bathrooms and a furnace and the air conditioner right now. MP need basement walls. I do not have a finished basement. What happens when you list the home and say No warranty. Uh, I'm sorry. I do not trust home inspectors. Well, Those are two separate things a little bit. So you see, I said it wrong. Yeah. So home, huh? Go ahead, Go ahead. What I'm really saying is I'm selling, as is Yeah, And so and that's fine. So homework they can still be off without ever saying as is essentially as is, in a sense, you still have to disclose if you're aware of any issues, But as is, essentially is you saying if you find something, I'm not fixing it. I'm just not going to address anything if you're offering a price, and and that's what I agreed to. I'm just not. Maybe you agree to lower the price or do that credit or something like that. But you're basically saying I'm I'm not gonna fix anything. Let's just talk about this, as is we used to hear a lot of, you know. Here's so much, But is that then in writing, Craig, How does that work? No, generally not because I mean the same thing. You know, attorney's gonna if you can say it's as is, but if you know there's a problem and you didn't disclose it. You still run the risk of getting sued with that? So, Yeah, I wouldn't want to put that in writing because I think it scares by yours. Absolutely. It makes it so just because you're selling, as is I mean, you're still in the driver's seat. You do not have to fix anything. You don't have to offer a credit. But putting it as is sends a red flag up to a lot of buyers like what's wrong with it? I think if you want to be, as is that's just you choosing to not okay could killing good point because you're scaring people away and I get it. What? We're seeing a lot these days, too. With the inspections. These inspectors are Meticulous, most of them. They are very detailed years ago. You didn't see much. They looked at the furnace, the rough and Oak Foundation and that was it. Now they're opening every window and check in every outlet and they're making sure things there and basically very right some of their fellow day exactly what you guys would You guys agree that when you see the words, as is in an MLS listing that pretty much is the killer saying, Please lowball me. There's a problem. I think there's a problem like Yeah, I haven't taken care of my property. That's the impression I would get to John. Thank you for the call. Good question. We don't talk about that too often, as is we'll take a quick break. Come right back. We've got Packer picks and more coming up on the Redefine Realty show here in Wi San. Wow. "So there's this tiny town in Wisconsin called Mount pleasant populations just twenty, six, thousand people, village and life in Mount. Pleasant is usually is quiet as you'd expect. Their suburb of Racine, home of malted milk and the sight of some of America's largest cabbage farms. But that's the city now presents the suburb place were nothing really happens. Until last year when the village became the site of a completely unprecedented massive international experiment. Truth. Even Mundane. It's going to tell the story this fall. I went to pleasant to meet this woman named Kelly Gallaher. Hi. Halley. commanded she lives in his ivy-covered split. Level House my home is located about. A little bit over a mile from from Lake Michigan so. Did she say? It's really beautiful out here by receiving. It's like a very light blue almost like a Caribbean vibe. It's it's all about the light I think it's magical. I think. I even like how the lake looks on my gps. Like it that much Kelly has been here for thirty years and she used to be an arts educator. But now she's basically retired. When did you start getting involved in kind of more? I don't I don't know what to call it activism or just Kinda village. What would you call it well? What if there is a name? I think other people have a lot of names for for what I do but. Ones I I probably wouldn't care to repeat the polite name that Kelly's detractors might use for her is busy body. She's an extremely vocal participant and the town's local democracy and her main stage is this place called village. Okay. The hours upon us I would. Like to open the village board meeting, Order Religions. Village Hall which sits right next to the local white is where the residents of mount pleasant all gather twice a month with their village government to talk about all the local issues that need fixing through weeds this high in the yard of one of the vacation homes this. We're going to have some recommendations and numbers for the Lake Park Fluffy Rosen, which is very Army number one on our agenda, our softball game we had this last Sunday for the case athletics. That went over very well to I didn't get any reports of injuries so we're good. Pictures in the paper though in Racine County the mount. Pleasant. Village Hall meetings are famous very well attended. They actually taped the meetings and upload them to the website, and if you're like me and have watched every single wine, you will look forward to the moment when Kelly good evening my name is Kelly Gallaher. Hauled corruption and we intend to get to the bottom of it. Thank you. Thank you for weekly Sunshine and good share. That man who sounds very exasperated that is Dave degroot village president. He is sitting behind this big long table in this large office chair at the center of the screen, and he's flanked on both sides by his six village trustees. Dave. Runs this meeting David Kelly. Like each other they disagree on pretty much. Every single thing to do with the future of Mount Pleasant. Kelly has a sign on her front lawn that says David degroot must resign and David grew lives ten doors down from her. It's an intense block and Kelly told me that it got especially bad about a year ago when she was helping Dave's opponent in the village election. The previous March when he was running for office, he sent out a press release a basically accusing me of egging his house. Egging his house Yes yes. He filed a police report and suggested in his press release that I had been involved in the attack the political at an actual literal egg attack on his home, which the police report did not verify at all. In fact, it was the the described it as as teenagers and a single egg that was tossed on his driveway was hardly an attack I was not there. I only buy organic eggs which are far too expensive to throw it. Anyone's house let alone someone I don't like it was it was ridiculous. So it's fair to say that my relationship with with him was contentious I think he's a fool and a terrible per village president.

"The center and the root of the financial crisis had strange new terms and they were developed and aggressively marketed for years in black and brown middle class communities like the one that I visited when I met a homeowner name to collect land had owned a home on a leafy street in the Mount Pleasant neighborhood of Cleveland for over a decade but when I met him he was near for closure like nearly all of his neighbors he received a knock on the door from a broker promising to refinance his mortgage what the broker didn't tell him was that this was a new kind of mortgage a mortgage with an inflated interest rates and a balloon payment and prepayment penalty if you try to get out of it now the common misperception then and still today is that people like Glenn were buying properties they couldn't afford that they themselves were risky borrowers I saw how this stereo type made it harder for policy makers to Siva crisis for what it was back when we still had time to stop it but that's all it was a stereo type the majority of subprime mortgages went to people who have good credit like glam and African Americans and Latinos were three times as likely even if they have good credit than white people to get sold these toxic loans the problem wasn't the borrower the problem was the lone these loans super profitable for the lenders but designed to fail for the powers spread out past the confines of black and brown neighborhoods like glands and into the wider weitere mortgage market all of the nation's big Wall Street firms that on these loans at its peak one out of every five mortgages in the country was in this mold and the crisis would go on to cost us all nineteen trillion in lost well pensions home equity savings eight million jobs vanished homeownership rate but has never recovered my years of advocating in vain for homeowners like.

Joe Nevills Interview: A Long Goodbye To Mount Pleasant Meadows

"Joe put together a piece titled Biting the Dust Along Goodbye to mount pleasant meadows. And you can go back and Google it on the pollock report now. It was published on June July twenty second of last year and that is now and eclipse award winning feature and congratulations to Joe Honor. Joe Good morning my friend. Happy to have you onboard here man. Where'd you find that clip throwback I so I started google? I I wanted to come up with something to welcome you to the program. Something Mount Pleasant Meadows related and I started googling race calls at Mount Pleasant Meadows and that was is the only piece that I could find. I'm thankful that you put that together all those years ago. Yeah that was that was Scott Sirnak who actually wrote about in the stories won the eclipse award. The man did everything. He was the announcer. He was the bartender programs from marketing. Director Janitor Even puncher tickets on a slow today the secretary we had to do everything there yet. You know I said this is the top of the show you the peace article that you wrote was so good. It struck a chord for me. Personally I think it did for so many racing fans that have ever fallen in love with the race track. That is no longer there and correct me if I'm wrong. was that kind of the crux in the inspiration for you put this together. It's something that you know. The story took me probably Raleigh about five years to put together from first thoughts to hitting send on it. Just because I knew that I wanted to write something about my pleasant. That was when I closed. Because you know the demand for writing about forces. I mean the the the demand for writing about horse racing in Michigan so low that it's you know someone's going to do something wrong it's pretty much gotTa be me and I knew that I was only got got one shot at this and I needed to make it out so it's something that I've been trying to piece together for a long long time and get the right people to talk to the people that I associated with most with the track who are three people. I talked to for the story and you know. Try to stick the landing because I was only GonNa get one shot at this thing. You know miskin Michigan race tracks have been closing for a very long time. And you're a Michigan native. Why was Mount Pleasant Meadows? The one that was so personal for you. Well there are two reasons one is it was the closest track to me I grew up in town called Edmore Michigan about thirty five minutes from my pleasant. So usually the thoroughbred outposts were either in Detroit or the Detroit area or in Muskegon which is on the coast of Lake Michigan. So this is Kinda my local option. If I just wanted to go play the simulcast or you know just go watch live racing without having to take up. Most of my day month wasn't meadows was my option and you the other one was that it was just very accepting community. It's where my Grandpa taught me to read the racist. Learn the races and you know it was small enough that you got to know everybody because it had to because you know you could. I used to have a joke on twitter that I could go round and high five everyone on the tracks grounds if if I hit a good ticket and so you had to figure out who everybody was you know everybody. And that's something that stuck with me for years after the track is close when you stand stand there and you look at what is the old mount pleasant meadows location. What are some of the things that immediately hit you? I mean you think about some of the people and horses that were out there competing You know mount pleasant was the place where you know. There weren't a whole lot of professional jockeys professional trainers in the sense that this was their job. This was their ways to make a living You know a lot of them were a lot of the jockeys were factory workers or they worked as mechanics next. Had you know the country businesses. What have you you know a lot of other trainers? This was something that you know. They ran their horses on the weekends. Here and if they had a good one they'd go to Pinnacle Race Course a Great Lakes down there but like this. Was You know this. This was the base for them. So I think of those people and it was you know since it's such a small core. The same jockeys are the same group of eight ten jockeys or writing every race. The Same Group of you know twenty or so trainers are sending every horse through everything so I think that and I think the south you know. You played the clip of Scott announcing the races earlier. I think of all the different announcers that they had. I think of you know very specific people in the crowd yelling because you you know you get into a crowd of people have very distinctive voices especially when they're being very loud and you think of you know I think that's the jockeys wife and that's you know certain fan who just lost her. You lost a bet or something and just think of the sights and sounds and you know for me. I think of the smells. There's something that I wrote about in the story how you know. The track had a very particular particular smell when it was going I believe I said it was Plastic seats in the sun cigarettes in the open air and the stuff you find under a chairs. There's boot and it's just you know it's something very particular track that I've always associated with it whether it was actually a good smell or not is to be determined urban but I knew where I was when I was there and that was something that you know. It's association you know that I'm at a place I like and things are going to be all right. There are a few individuals that if you spend time talking with in this in this article and trainer nate funnel is one jockey. Lee Gates is another now many people when I say those names are not gonna any clue who were talking about so tell me a little bit more about those guys. So nate funnel He was born in Colorado. Moved to Oh Michigan when he was teen and he was The came up under trainer named Tony Cunningham. Who was a quarter horse trainer? WHO's actually gone on to do? Very well in Indiana China has been the meat leading trainer there several times and he went out his own in the last few years of track and did pretty well for himself both in the quarter. Horses this is N.. Thoroughbreds and Arabians not plus it had racist for all sorts of different breeds. They also round paints there too and you know it was just a very he. He came to the life of the party. Kinda guy when You know you go over to attract simulcasts at the bar there. As well. He'd always be at the at the bar. You know cracking wise. The people making jokes and just kind of you know he's he'd be the loudest voice in the room and you know he'd do the same out of the race track. It'd be he's the one that would always associate. Let's being somebody who would almost be like a wrestling bill and to the crowd and just sort of like you know John Jacking with people you know like Oh we got. The horse is going to be the favorite right right here. I've got the odd odd that you can do it. He'd always they only got the killer right here and you know he was. He was a big character. He was a big hairdryer. Small track and that really stood stood out pearly gates leave road for his parents primarily Dave and Shirley Gates They wrote on this parents would run on the fair circuit before my pleasant meadows opened and Lee had two riders build so he was the one that got up on the horses when he was in his teens and that just sort of became his thing after that I spent the weeks working at a factory nearby and the entire family lives on. Basically the same stretch of road around Blanchard Michigan. And we're right up on the weekends cans Something kind of interesting about the writing contingent is that the racist would go very quickly on Saturdays and Sundays. It started one. That'd be done by about four so everybody would ride their cards there. And then Grew up with them. We're getting a car together. And drive down to Indiana downs. which is a good five hour drive at least from my blood and they would ride the quarterhorse card there because it would always be the last two or three races on a night card so they leave my pleasant at about four? Drive down to Indiana Indiana downs and ride the horse races. There you know. What ten o'clock at night? Then turn around and come back and ride the Sunday racism applause so now these are people who made their living doing this but it was a hard living doing it to do it all they needed to

Eighteen months ago. This was a field. And now it's a question Mark from American public media. This is marketplace tech. I'm Tracey Samuelson in for Molly would. In June, President Trump stuck a gold colored shovel in Wisconsin field breaking ground on an enormous factory for the Taiwanese tech giant Foxconn, the company negotiated nearly four billion dollars in tax incentives in exchange for creating thirteen thousand jobs, but last week Foxconn announced a change of plans instead of hiring manufacturing workers to make flat screen TV's. It shift are in D And engineering then a few days later another surprise after a talk with President Trump. The company said just kidding. It'll go back to manufacturing shoot the him and Amy has been following this back and forth for the podcast reply. All I asked her what she's heard from Mount Pleasant. The Wisconsin village where this massive plant is supposed to be built people in the town were completely caught off guard. I spoke to one person who had been very much for the deal very optimistic. And he said that he heard the news while he. At work, and he just he had to sit down. Yes. So Ken Foxconn, just change. It's mind and build something else. So there was really this. This idea that what was gonna happen in Wisconsin was going to be like almost a a DisneyWorld of like future technologies. You know, like there would be this whole supply chain that would mushroom up around the factory and would create this like very very sophisticated high-tech tech wonderland. But they wouldn't give any details of how they would actually pull that off. And there's nothing in their contract. That says what the mix of jobs needs to be how much does that matter in terms of the local area the economy, the talent pool a matter a lot because the entire reason that this site with selected as because there is a number of workers who've lost jobs as assembly line plants. Have disappeared in the area. And so as soon as they switched to. Okay, we're actually going to do mostly engineering jobs this site makes no sense. And so is there a better way to do this? Yes. I mean, so one analysts that I spoke to he said, I go to Wisconsin a lot and it's a huge center for robotics. And he was thinking, it might have made more sense for the state to say, hey, you know, what we want to bring tech jobs to the state, and we're going to do that by supporting the companies that exist because it's just easier to develop this organically from the ground up, and so people should consider like, hey, what are the kinds of industries that exist in the state right now that could actually take money from us and use it to just grow something that makes more sense here. Sri the Panamanian is with the podcast reply. All her FOX. Gone reporting is in the episode negative Mount Pleasant it is so so good SRI. These still doubtful that Foxconn will wind up making those TV screens in Wisconsin politics aside. She says it's just hard to see how the economics would work. I'm Tracey Samuelson. "Was we was the Foxconn podcast episode was that I'm reply all. Only know the one you mean with talk with the mayor and the whole gas this. Oh, I hadn't even thought about that. Yeah. That was probably reply all that was a really chilling up Assode. That guy's a bad guy. Yes. Fox Conon the village negative Mount Pleasant. Oh, yeah. I remember this small town in Wisconsin becomes the site of completely unprecedented experiment. Oh, yeah. That must be. Yeah. Yeah. That must be. So basically the help you out here. But the thrust of that piece was that we all we all know about the president touting doing his big announcement touting the Foxconn was going to bring an unprecedented like mega factory, a complex of factories to Wisconsin. And that in return for these. I think thousands if not tens of thousands build like the kind of screen that nobody wants any more. But yes, but but we gotta go back to the original pitch. The original pitch was this is going to be what they're doing in China all those chinamen making our phones, not only are we going to start doing that in the good old survey. But it's going to be your your town is going to be a new to begin as a phrase the guy kept using this escaping me now, but the mayor wasn't or the sky. Yeah. This is going to be an unprecedented. Tech makeup, lex of actual hard core, hardware, constructs or whatever. But it was going to be sprawling needed so much space because all of the actual this is important because there's a reason it's done in China for lots of reasons, not least cost, but like, you know, we're going to reshape this is going to be the beginning of a whole new world for Wisconsin. And arguably maybe America is that these factories that used to go to the China men it's coming to America. But order the reporter was following the story for reply all she started talking to sort of technology manufacturing experts just in the episode, and it seemed pretty cursory, right? She called the guy up knew a lot about factories, and she was like is this like a like a lasting thing. And he looked at the plans. We'll they're making the kind of flat panel monitors that nobody wants anymore. I can't keep it straight. But they're making LCD and everyone wants to lead now or something along those lines. I I might have gotten that wrong. But they want the old con they're making the old kind. And she was like, oh, well, if people decide they want the new kind can they switch over to that? And he just starts laughing. Yes. The re three tooling though, it'd be necessary for that would be like switching from Toyota's to toasters or something like tear down the whole you have to rebuild the whole thing. But like. But, but what are the what happens they gotta get that land. They gotta get that land. Well, people should go. I don't wanna spoil it people should go. Listen to this episode because it's an amazing story of local politics and fair to say it up ended a community out of fundamental level in order to get what they needed to build this factory of the future it so I mean, it's a hor-. It's it's a slow moving horror story this reply documentary about about what's going on in this town..

"A small town in Iowa called Mount Pleasant. And in that raid ice, arrested, thirty two undocumented workers, and the majority of them were from Guatemala, and I made some calls after the raid and talk to some people in Mount Pleasant and little by little found out that a lot of those people who were detained actually came from the same place in Guatemala, small world department called keychain, and after visiting Mount Pleasant a few times, it became clear that there was this connection between the two places to small towns, essentially, one in mid America in one in the middle of Guatemala, and I was just interested in looking at that connection and seeing how these places that are. So different are connected by economics and the immigration issue. So connected by economics connected by immigration ticket. Take us down the personal level and the people that you met. Yeah. So there were I concentrated on a few different people and one was a high school sophomore name walford are his father Elmer was one of the thirty two men who was arrested, and he was actually deported in August. And when he was deported. Walford who had joined his father about a year and a half after his father moved to Mount Pleasant to work at the concrete plant walford joined him from Guatemala and the deportation essentially left him orphaned in Mount Pleasant. And when I first met him in June. He was still trying to figure out what he was going to do where he was going to stay and shortly after that and eighty two year old woman named Kay young decided to adopt him informally, adopt him and their relationship is really was really interesting to me because like the two towns they were completely different came from completely different backgrounds. But as I got to know them more, I could see that both of them had grown to sort of depend on the other just like these two towns had so they were sort of a microcosm of the microcosm of of these towns, and I really liked looking at their relationship and seeing how it's shed light on the relation. Between the two places. And Monte help us understand how this came to be in terms of these two towns having this connection because you're one of the things that you take away from this story is this idea that this is not an anomaly that there are these connections. It seems between towns in America and other places outside of the country all over the place sister cities, right or mirrors. Right. Yeah. This is something that that actually happens a lot, and this particular circumstance it really started about thirty years ago. When you look at the trends, the workforce population in small towns and rural areas in Iowa began to decline and at the same time that happened there were actually industries that were moving into those areas where the population in the workforce was declining particularly industries related to agriculture. These factories wanted to be closer to the producers. So you had this phenomenon where the workforce is shrinking, but there are companies moving into these places. So a lot of rural areas and small towns in Iowa became increasingly dependent on foreign born labor. And so in Guatemala, for example, a lot of the people who were immigrating or from rural areas themselves and people who have studied this have have noticed that particularly rural immigrants in places like water Malla, they prefer to relocate to rural areas in the US. It's more comfortable for them. And they more easily set up networks. So what happened in keychain is? There were a few people who immigrated early and by word of mouth spreads back to neighbors and relatives in Guatemala, and so what you have been our little pockets in rural America where the populations of the immigrant workers come from pretty isolated and contained areas in Guatemala, and this is something that you'll find all over the US. That's Monty real joining us from Chicago. And Jason this story. He told us he spent many months working. On it spent time on the ground in Guatemala time on the ground Mount Pleasant. I wa and again, this be sister cities is Moore cities. Like, you've never connected them. I think in a normal way, but they are connected because of immigration. You're listening to.
