"Regional crises like homelessness, drug use, economic recovery from the pandemic. Mount Lake Terrace Mayor Kiyoko Matsumoto Wright spoke with Northwest News Radio's Taylor Sizemore to talk about the unique ways their city or county is developing while trying to balance the response regional crises like homelessness, drug use, economic recovery from the pandemic. Live. Sound Transit says they need to limit traffic on 236th Street Southwest as part of the Linwood light Link rail extension. And I imagine you're counting down the days now until trains are really running through Mount Lake Terrace. How close is the station to opening? Well, they tell me it's going to open later next year and hope I it's going to open. Well, yes, we've seen some delays elsewhere in the system, specifically on I -90 with some problems they need to fix before they can get the East Link going. But how will light rail alter the city's economic outlook and the long term development plans? It's going to make a huge difference. We have been rezoning our properties in our town center for almost 15 years. We've been working really, really hard to be ready for the density that we need, the zoning that we need, and then we need to get housing for people of all economic levels. So we've doing been a lot of work. Mountain Lake Terrace, it's one of those cities around here that is close to everything, but at the same time it's also surrounded by everything, if you see what I mean. Problems from bigger cities can spill across city boundaries. So how is Mountain Lake Terrace handling this regional problem we're all facing of homelessness and public drug use? Well, we have our share and we are actually working with our surrounding neighbors and the county. And so in the help of opioids and everything, we're working regionally with that. Our police chief is working with a lot of other police chiefs and the county and so forth. So I think that is pretty much the answer because no one city can do everything themselves. Yes. Well, up to this point, no city has been able to. That's for darn sure. And like most areas, notice I Mountlake Terrace has a job posting for police officers. Just about every city leader I've been talking to recently for this series is going through that same process of trying to hire more officers. But how is Mountlake Terrace approaching this regional problem? Because we know here in Seattle, there's 400 or more officer openings. We are hiring and then we lose to other other jurisdictions, our police and officers so forth. I know that our neighbor Briar is having the same problems. And it's not just police officers, but it's our planning department, our engineering department, our public works department. All the cities are looking for people. A lot of demand for those city jobs because they pay so well in so many cases. You can always find out more about the goings on of Mountlake Terrace, of course, on the city's website. Thank you so much for joining us today. Kiyoko Matsumoto Wright, the mayor of Mountlake Terrace. And that's Northwest News Side speaking with her. Homebuyers been may have drained by record prices and bidding wars, but those who did get in now refuse to budge. people A lot still of need to move, and those who are in the market face fewer options. More than 85 % have an interest rate below 4%. Homeowners are holding onto property, their a leading reason behind a major shortage of new listings. It's just way more costly for someone to move, to trade up one mortgage for another, and it incentivizes a lot of these homeowners to just stay out market of the altogether. Pending home sales are down about 17 % from a year ago, just as we the hit height of the summer selling season, when families usually try to move before the new school year begins in the fall. Police have said that there was a fight between two groups of students hearing from high school over that gun. And after months of records requests, we now know where investigators believe that gun came from. Now, according to these new reports from the snohomish county sheriff's office, they say a man in linwood called police to report that his gun was missing on October 28th. That was 11 days before the shooting. Investigators say they've talked to witnesses who say that man's son took the gun from the family's home and was showing it to a group of friends at a grocery store in mount Lake terrace. It was there that police say another teenager stole the gun and ran off. Police say that teenager had connections to Ingram high where there was a fight over the gun and one student allegedly shot another multiple times killing him.
