The USS William D. Porter Was the Unluckiest Ship in WWII
"The troubles of the uss william d porter began immediately as they were leaving port in norfolk virginia. The first problem was when they left port they raised their anchor improperly and they damaged one of the ships it was dock next to they tore off one of the railings a lifeboat mount from one of the ships. No one was hurt but it was a very inauspicious. Start to their journey. The next day things didn't go much better. They accidentally dropped a depth charge into the water which exploded the reason. Why so many ships in the fleet was to defend themselves against german u boats as no one knew the depth chart was being released. Everyone in the fleet assume that it was a torpedo attack which caused everyone to take evasive maneuvers. The porter had to sheepishly. Notify the rest of the fleet that they had accidentally caused the explosion and that they weren't under attack after the accidental depth-charge. The willie was hit by a rogue wave which washed one of the crew members overboard and he was never seen again. The next day it got even worse. President roosevelt wanted to see anti-aircraft drill to see how the ships would defend themselves against an they also went through a torpedo drill to simulate how they would launch a torpedo. Normally when you drill like this you remove the primer from the torpedo which is what makes it a shoot out of the torpedo tube. however the torpedo man aboard the porter forgot to take the primer out of one of the tubes when they simulated launching a torpedo they actually launched a torpedo and the torpedo is heading towards the uss iowa which had on board the president of the united states. i should add. It wasn't just the president of the united states aboard the iowa. Roosevelt had brought with him. The secretary of state cordell hull chief-of-staff admiral william delay chief of staff of the army. George marshall chief of naval operations ernest king commanding general of the. Us army's henry. Hap arnold secretary of commerce harry hopkins and a bunch of other high ranking officials. If the iowa were to be sunk it would've taken out almost all of the american senior military leadership during the war.

Patrick Radden Keefe on Empire of Pain
"Patron kief joins us now. His new book is called empire of pain. the secret history of the sackler dynasty. Patrick thanks for being here. Thanks so much for having me back. So let's start with a very basic question. In case people are not aware of the sackler family and why he would be writing about them with title like empire of pain. who are the sackler. So this sort of to waste answer that question until a few years ago what. The sackler name Generally to to the extent that people were aware of this family it was a very wealthy family. One of the wealthiest families in the united states with a branch in the uk in london and they were known chiefly for philanthropy right art museum wings. Hundreds of millions of dollars to art museums and universities and medical research and would very often put their name on these bequests. If you you know in new york city go to the metropolitan museum of art and there's the sackler wing And that was what they were known for. What was more mysterious. Was the source of this wealth and it has People have become more widely aware. Recently that That the bulk of this wealth comes from a company purdue pharma which produces the powerful painkiller oxycontin in this era in which the naming of things and the un naming of things mounting and the on mounting has become very active. Is it still the circle ring. In the metropolitan museum is sackler still emblazoned on all of these buildings and donated wings. Well it's very much in flux. So as i speak today it's still the sackler wing but the has actually announced today initially. They said they weren't taking any future. Donations from the soccer is because of the connection between the family and the crisis and then more recently. They've said that they are You know i think assessing is is the word whether or not the sackler wing will remain the sackler wing. Some institutions have started to take the name down so tufts university took down the sackler name from a series of buildings Because the students there this is at the medical school had said. I don't wanna go to class in a building named after this family and and get my medical education. They're more recently. New york university has done the same. The louvre in paris is taken down the sackler name. So there's a real question for many of these other institutions and there's dozens and dozens of them were the name still stands whether or not they'll keep it

Netflix Stock Drops 7% After Flopping on Q1 Subscriber Goal
"Out. what happened to netflix today. On the back of disappointing earnings and stock dropping more than seven percent for its worst day since november. Netflix is one of the first major. Stay at home. High growth names report. We're going to hear from the other. Big tech titans in the coming days so netflix. Shoot off a major warning flare to investors that we are in some rocky earnings ahead. Dan what do you say. Well listen if you think. Back to january when the company net flicks in particular had blowout subscriber numbers. The stock gapped up. I think thirteen fourteen percent to a new all-time high. And what did it do over the next couple of weeks. You gave all of that back so here. We are now into this print and they disappointed the stock down seven and a half percent. Today doesn't seem really that horrible. If you think about this doc in particular has been rangebound for months and months and months. i'll just tell you this though. I see a lotta those stay at home. Names not acting particularly well so it may not be great for them and then the last thing about tech says that we've seen this move into mega cap names over the last few weeks we've seen apple amazon. Kinda mount sim moves. We've seen microsoft alphabet. Do pretty well. Also i think those are really dragging up the s. and p. five hundred and then of old tech we have a chart of oracle going back twenty years this thing went parabolic over the last few months and then jim cramer caught my eye today on twitter as he often to all of us. He said it's different this time and ibm ibm breakout. We have a chart going back to january twenty so to me. The movement of mega cap tack into old tech. Seems kind of defensive. And i think the price action of some of these work from home names of the stay at home names acting particularly poorly is probably not great for tech overall

Okay it's useful. I was as holy buddy. Hey frank hottest thing. I've ever seen bigger. There's nothing wrong with having fun things. I think people really passionate about comic book people or like animate people don't have a thing that might really into you know learning about it but it'd be different for me like okay. This is a lot that let's see the quick quick question question the thing for me out people that are two into something are snobby about it. It's very no. let's see i. I have learned. Oh i don't want to deal with this against the little snobby. But i think it's not worse than other. Comedians are to each other. So i i can deal with it. But it's a guy's house and he had a bogeyman display all over. He was a fan fan. Like yeah the matching mattress. I feel like i would have known. He will talk about pokemon before i got to. Oh what are you into. And then when it's clearly not going to be anything like comic books. Anime over says parking lot of poking around is a big goto. Actually believe it or not because it was like really big based in the us a lot of girls at least they can understand pokemon because they grew up with it so that was probably one of the easier. Phantoms to like. Go into where like anime. I enemy is a very hard threshold to like to for people to like except they they see the here anime and they like oh they associated with like henty automatically associated with. That's for kids and there's a lot of like animating that is just meant for adults like it's very mature stories and also most anime soap operas like even the action ones are literally just soap operas super weird but no just like with aks just like with about fighting or like i watched the other one. That's called food wars and it's literally like watching iron chef with more drama so there's like yeah what what. I don't think she talking about it. You understand have never seen iron chef. I think he lost track. Thank you okay cool. No it's just like. Yeah so i think for me when i tried to like. I'm dating somebody like starting to date them. I definitely have to be a friend about it. Because you don't want to surprise the person with it because that makes it like really worse so i always try to tell them like. Oh yeah. i'm definitely in a comic books. I do watch anime. "However, they chose to vent their anger over lost wages. The match women still went back to work after all if they were furious over a single day's wage I, would they afford to lose it all? By eighteen, eighty, two, the Bryant and may match factory employed more women in the east end than any other company they were putting other match manufacturers out of business or gobbling them up they poured money into advertising campaigns and in order to keep them operating the liberal government massaged manufacturing laws to make sure that matchboxes kept marching out there factory doors whether it was the gladstone statue or all the behind the scenes glad-handing that theodore and his brothers their relationship to government officials paid off in many ways big and small. Their factory in the east end had started when Swedish match factory closed down and the family of grocers lost their foreign source of cheap matches. Bryant's decided to bring the operation home and run it themselves from a neighborhood teeming with life and laborers. So they moved into the old home of the British Sperm Candle Company. It was a sign of the changing times. Here's Louise Raw once again. Everything really changes with industrialization people come in from the countryside for walking in passing foams or lucky break futile setup really perhaps, the Lord of the Manor is some capacity that come flooding into the new towns and cities especially London to walk in manufacturers. Nothing's ready for them. Nothing's prepared said, they just come crowding into London and the rich get the hang out as soon as they can and skein trying to make that possible. Suddenly we have new suburbs so you can. You can come back into Japan. And then you can get away from all. and. The dust in the disorder of industrialisation and you know a pretty stinky process industrialization particularly stanway. His. DOT, com somedays. So they could get out and they left the poor but singularly in the east end, just to get a Hallam with it. And get on with it. They did. But like the match women, Londoners were daily confronted with the fact that they were living at the heart of a powerful empire, an empire that made its rulers incredibly rich. But close beside the splendid homes of the bankers and bureaucrats of London's Financial Centre men and women in the east end were working themselves to death, and it wasn't just the match women who looked at their skimpy wages and thought that something was wrong with that picture. If some gatherings like the dedication of the gladstone statue brought honor to the government's heavyweights. Other meetings were not so flattering especially when times got hard, eighteen, eighty four saw Britain in a deep depression families like the Bryant's may have enjoyed the friendship of the governing powers but not every working family enjoy the same attention and that was bound to end in unrest take for instance, a gathering that was organized on a cold February Monday in eighteen eighty six by the London United Workers Committee. They plan to meeting in Trafalgar Square to cast blame for massive unemployment on foreign businesses squeezing out Britain's sugar refineries. The London police knew that there was some potential for a scuffle. So the commissioner assigned five hundred officers to the gathering thousands of demonstrators arrived from the East End. Crowds of Socialists, led by the likes of Eleanor Marx and William Morris joined the crowd. They're more simple demand that the government provide work or bread had gathered crowds throughout London over the past few years fearing that a clash between the two groups would prove violence police ordered the socialist to carry their right flags from fog or square to park a mile to the. West. They were only too happy to oblige in their wake ten thousand marchers took their hunger, their demands and their pent up fury through the streets. Pall Mall but they were met with scorn along the way. Here's Louise Raw once again. The sevens of the push clubs in power money the gentlemen's clubs in Panama, on the docent things at the pool who marching Parson them they throw heavy glass ashtrays I throw shoes. Yeah. The cleaning the gentleman's shoes and they get said Hardaway throw them at the. You go hunt. What are you doing? Hey, get out of here. met with violence and told that this part of London was not there's to occupy the marchers returned the greeting in-kind they smashed the windows of the gentleman's club they broke into shops and loaded themselves with the clothes on display for London's upwardly mobile when they reached Hyde Park the crowd milled for three hours some even tried on their new attire stripping in the open air. At least a thousand destitute London nurse weren't done. They knew where the money was they marched on jeweler stores, China's shops and wine merchants tailors weren't exempt either nor were perfumers and art shops but despite all this, the police were nowhere to be seen. In their wake crowd left a trail of smashed carriages, emptied businesses and respectable ladies lightened of their jewels who wealthy residents of west London were horrified and outraged. In the days of dense fog, the followed rumours spread that gangs were assembling on the outskirts of the city to march in. Once again, the doors of London were locked. The city was a ghost town. The Times of London, called it's a disaster shame such as London has not known within living memory. Queen Victoria wrote to her Prime Minister None other than William Gladstone that's if steps and very strong ones are not speedily taken to put these proceedings down the government will suffer severely the effect abroad is already humiliating the country. The city's leadership in other words was disgraced and much of that blame ultimately landed on the shoulders of London's Commissioner of police in the shattered remains of the neighborhood he resigned his post. But the Home Office and the city leaders knew that the London poor would not resign their fights. They were still without work and bread than the marchers and match women were bound to take the streets again. So it was decided that London needed a police commissioner who would know what to do when the locals got restless. They looked for a gladstone of the battlefield who would understand the way that the policing of London had an effect abroad someone who had bring the order of the Empire to its tempestuous hearts. They looked.

Deal and this person says a lot of very nice things about President David Group. Is Pro debut degree definitely pro Dave degroot over time that kind of gave them away. And could person who's just Dave degroot? Absolutely could be although the person who the person actually. Has To know quite a bit about Dave degroot. Kelly said the years before all this she sirri Dave's comments on the website of their local newspaper. So she feels as if she can recognize his writing I ask Dave about it. There's this website called. Let's make a better mount. Pleasant. It was like an anonymous person who's posting things about Kelly. Gallaher and Kelly has a theory that that you the village president so I just wanted to ask you is not me and. Take a close look at it. There's nothing positive or better about it. If she believed catch with in advertising, it should be called a negative mount pleasant. It was happening during the time that was the most precarious for the Foxconn deal all these officials from the state and like nearby communities there at the village meetings. And so Kelly comes up with this plan. X. Keller. Who wishes to speak about the mount pleasant hate website. And so what I began to do was every village meeting I brought in whatever posts had been posted on it and I read them out loud the author as you know who I believe is village president to group. You to know that my husband of thirty years who he calls dimwit because his last name is dim lower is jealous of Sarah. Huckabee Sanders a real decent American woman not a vicious vacuous loser like me. He also believes the village hall is being rented out by a group of Communist. This weekend at is our leader. The president. Once again, I ask you to seek help and treatment. Your website frightens my family and friends, and it's weird. Remember there are all these bigwigs here for these foxconn meetings and basically Kelly is accusing Dave of writing all this crazy stuff and she's using it to so doubt in this whole process. Even if you do not like. Me The person who wrote in published these insults for his own twisted entertainment has destroyed all trust and cooperation and a village on the brink of enormous business development and financial responsibilities. How did they respond? He said nothing. He just he said nothing nothing at all. The public has a chance at the beginning of the meetings for three minutes to say whatever is on their mind. You know frankly, I don't care whether they want to. Share their thimble collection with me or or You know talk about you know football game worked out or IF THEY WANNA sing revolution number nine backwards I don't care as long as they get it done in three minutes. It turned out. The reward for Dave suffering those three minutes speeches was he won Kelly lost she wanted the town to get to see the deal before it was signed but that did not happen by October twenty seventeen. So this is six months after they'd I gotten that Foxconn RFP Dave and his team have finished putting together their best offer to lure foxconn to mount. Pleasant. And foxconn says, yes, the two sides do group handshake and how did you feel? Relieved. AB absolutely relieved. and. I had a keep my mouth shut until the till till the announcement was made and it was kind of a pins and needles moment for the next couple of weeks us. Is the handshake. Really a good handshake does this really really going to happen and within days afterwards you know we were very very much assured that yeah, it's it's coming to Mt Pleasant Mt. pleasant is going to become the epicenter of Wiscon- Valley. That's a cool feeling. Dave degroot gets to do his own press conference. It's like a mini version of the White House conference against his big white backdrop. That's as we seen county welcomes Foxconn say it with me loud and proud three two one what a day to be from Wisconsin. Thank you. So is a day for all of us to celebrate. And I'd like to start by thanking President trump for his leadership. It wasn't that long ago when then candidate trump needed very bold promise to bring manufacturing back to the United States. The Art of the deal. and. Here's what we have before us today ten, billion dollars, of investment. Twenty million square feet of industrial build out. Thousands and thousands of very well paying jobs. Increasing our middle class. It's everything that you could ask for. foxconn is coming to mount pleasant. It's official sort of at this point the village has a handshake, not a finished contract and nobody in the village knows the exact details of how this going to work like what Foxconn will deliver to the town and what the town will give away in exchange and everybody wanted to know those details including me because there was something about this whole deal that had just never made sense to me, which is why would foxconn want to come to America and what would they want with Mount Pleasant The. Answer to that..

"Wants to know like what is this possibly? To big thing is going to be an Amazon warehouse, a Tesla plant, and they just cannot get village government to say anything and then one day they get the news not from townhall not from Dave degroot. But from the president of the United States is a great day for American workers and manufacturing and for everyone who believes in the concept and the label made in the USA. Trump at the White House announced that a major company is coming to Wisconsin. And that company is Foxconn Code a world leader. In manufacturing for Computers Communications and Consumer Electronics one of the truly great companies of the world will deal. The trump is announcing right now is not at all done none of the details have actually been hashed out nothing assigned but nobody in the village knows that and they immediately have all these questions. If they've heard of Foxconn, what they know is either, this is a company that makes iphones or that they're notorious for the way they treat their factory workers thousands of Chinese. Workers staged a one day strike Friday at the Foxconn factory known for poorly treating workers who helped make apple products such as the IPHONE APPLE CEO, Steve Jobs says he's very troubled by a string of suicides at Foxconn fatigue and boredom are common in any factory but this one is surrounded by suicide that they are everywhere when these stories came out years ago Fox comes reputation this country was damaged like it's still the thing they're known for, but in the rest of the world. Fox is known for being this multibillion dollar company with these mega factories all over. Asia there's one that employs two hundred thousand people the entire population of Mount pleasant twenty, six thousand. And trump is saying, this is the company that's going to prove that you can bring jobs back to the US to make such an incredible invest. German girl put his faith and confidence in the future of the American. Economy another words if I didn't get elected, he definitely would not be spending ten billion dollars. Trump. Says the FOXCONN has committed to building an LCD panel factory somewhere in Wisconsin and the full project area would be massive like this would be one of the biggest factory compounds in the entire country. So back in Mount, pleasant, everyone's thinking that must be us. Some people are excited and other people like Kelly are wondering why would they come here and where are they gonna find all this space for that kind of factory and. So they take all these feelings to the place. They've always taking them village hall I come before the Board today to talk about the same subject everyone has been for the last three months Foxconn. As you can tell by my address, I am one of those who are probably going to lose my house but then again, no one knows where this is going right We've been built a wonderful hand here. We just got a player, right This is critical to guys like me operate small businesses. At Mount Pleasant we need this. You're a better less expensively. For Wisconsin to help build a robust economy that creates good paying jobs the biggest deal in America is being debated in this fluorescent lit small town boardroom. But weirdly, the people who are debating, it are the residence, the people who are nothing about the details, the village government the board just sits there not saying anything even after the trump announcement, they refused to confirm that the future development they're considering is in fact Foxconn. And you can hear the residents start to get frustrated. Now, I'm filled with anxiety and cry all the time I lay sleeps at night thinking of our home crumbling down around us last month my neighbors I have witnessed core soil testing wetlands, testing tons of helicopters and Sigma Group. Flying. Drones. Videotape you my children in the backyard while they play. Why don't you have a meeting for the land owners and homeowners in said proposed site and tell them the truth about what is going to happen and win instead of all of us hearing nothing. But rumors, the residents just don't understand like, why is this a secret? Why can't this village board tell the village people that? This is coming is somebody twisting your arm telling you can't talk about it. The boards evasiveness just starts to get absurd a few months after the trump ounce -ment president Dave degroot is part of a delegation that takes a trip to Asia where he visits a factory. This is not a thing that mount pleasant village presidents do. So when Dave comes back to mount pleasant, he's at the meeting and he says if there's nothing to report. Reports. President has nothing. Trustees. You'RE GONNA make. Make a report on your trip. I can't say a lot but yet, well, the trust the president did. Make a trip to Japan it was A. A trip for Fact Finding and. Doing a lot of. Fact checking and and whatnot relative to OSCEOLA. Development that we've got coming this way there was a lot of that than we want. If I, interview him for this story and he said, yes, we met and village hall. Hi, I'm David. Nice to meet you Shuki shrew thinks this must months after that period where the board was being so secretive and bizarre, and by this point I understood why they'd been acting that way. It's because Foxconn had made the negotiator sign NDA's and the board had been told not to say a word. Anyway Dave was very much in line with the man that I had seen in all of this village board meeting videos like he's a little reserved, his very hard to read. But when he started talking about that Japan trip, which was a visit to a Foxconn factory that makes LCD TV screens when he talked about it i. saw this whole other Dave degroot his eyes got wide and he smiling person with a wonderful secret I've seen the future it's coming to mount. Pleasant. What tell me Morocco what was it like? It was big was massive. There's there's robots that are absolutely genius everything is so out of scale out of scope with how we would recognize traditional manufacturing just a an amazing sight to see. Just felt like the new generation. Senior with. Dave has this whole vision of what is coming to Wisconsin it's like Silicon Valley, but in Wisconsin they're going to call it Wiscon- Valley Dave told me about the first whiff. He got of this unity. He just been elected village president. Literally, it was his first week on job when this letter arrives. I'm sitting in the office of Jenny trick receiving, county economic development person, and we're we're looking at a an FBI request for proposal from aben unnamed company. we didn't know who this was about but I'm but I'm looking at these numbers and they make no sense. The I'm like are we off by a few decimal points here? I these numbers are absolutely crazy. What were the numbers? At the time it was. six, link six, billion with a B. in economic development and tens of millions of square feet and at the time i. think it was like eight to ten thousand employees. I would be hired and we've never obviously we've never seen anything like that Dave, says, he immediately asked his researcher at the office like who is this and the guy said I think it's.

"From Gamma, this is. PJ. So there's this tiny town in Wisconsin called Mount pleasant populations just twenty, six, thousand people, village and life in Mount. Pleasant is usually is quiet as you'd expect. Their suburb of Racine, home of malted milk and the sight of some of America's largest cabbage farms. But that's the city now presents the suburb place were nothing really happens. Until last year when the village became the site of a completely unprecedented massive international experiment. Truth. Even Mundane. It's going to tell the story this fall. I went to pleasant to meet this woman named Kelly Gallaher. Hi. Halley. commanded she lives in his ivy-covered split. Level House my home is located about. A little bit over a mile from from Lake Michigan so. Did she say? It's really beautiful out here by receiving. It's like a very light blue almost like a Caribbean vibe. It's it's all about the light I think it's magical. I think. I even like how the lake looks on my gps. Like it that much Kelly has been here for thirty years and she used to be an arts educator. But now she's basically retired. When did you start getting involved in kind of more? I don't I don't know what to call it activism or just Kinda village. What would you call it well? What if there is a name? I think other people have a lot of names for for what I do but. Ones I I probably wouldn't care to repeat the polite name that Kelly's detractors might use for her is busy body. She's an extremely vocal participant and the town's local democracy and her main stage is this place called village. Okay. The hours upon us I would. Like to open the village board meeting, Order Religions. Village Hall which sits right next to the local white is where the residents of mount pleasant all gather twice a month with their village government to talk about all the local issues that need fixing through weeds this high in the yard of one of the vacation homes this. Hi. It's been vacant for I. Don't know how many years gale for years. It's been vacant. We're going to have some recommendations and numbers for the Lake Park Fluffy Rosen, which is very Army number one on our agenda, our softball game we had this last Sunday for the case athletics. That went over very well to I didn't get any reports of injuries so we're good. Pictures in the paper though in Racine County the mount. Pleasant. Village Hall meetings are famous very well attended. They actually taped the meetings and upload them to the website, and if you're like me and have watched every single wine, you will look forward to the moment when Kelly good evening my name is Kelly Gallaher. Her Red Hair Hoop earrings steps up to the Mike Lees Captain Brian. Smith. Collected thirty three, thousand, seven, hundred and fourteen dollars an overtime pay in addition to his salary vacation. Her tally is basically the local civics watchdog. A joint parks has had no minutes published since April two, thousand, fourteen almost every week she uses her allotted three minutes to make it very clear to the people in power that she has her eye on them is outrageous by mount pleasant standards. Hauled corruption and we intend to get to the bottom of it. Thank you. Thank you for weekly Sunshine and good share. That man who sounds very exasperated that is Dave degroot village president. He is sitting behind this big long table in this large office chair at the center of the screen, and he's flanked on both sides by his six village trustees. Dave. Runs this meeting David Kelly. Like each other they disagree on pretty much. Every single thing to do with the future of Mount Pleasant. Kelly has a sign on her front lawn that says David degroot must resign and David grew lives ten doors down from her. It's an intense block and Kelly told me that it got especially bad about a year ago when she was helping Dave's opponent in the village election. The previous March when he was running for office, he sent out a press release a basically accusing me of egging his house. Egging his house Yes yes. He filed a police report and suggested in his press release that I had been involved in the attack the political at an actual literal egg attack on his home, which the police report did not verify at all. In fact, it was the the described it as as teenagers and a single egg that was tossed on his driveway was hardly an attack I was not there. I only buy organic eggs which are far too expensive to throw it. Anyone's house let alone someone I don't like it was it was ridiculous. So it's fair to say that my relationship with with him was contentious I think he's a fool and a terrible per village president. something that really disturbed me. And like everything else in Mount. Pleasant. This fight to was aired out in the next village board meeting They didn't anybody else's house. So I'm assuming you know that I was specifically targeted I don't know if it was of a political nature or not. Up. Until the summer of two thousand seventeen, that is what meetings were like in Mount Pleasant Village Hall and then something much bigger arrived this decision the village had to make where the only thing that anybody could agree on was that whatever they chose it would completely transform their village Kelly says, the whole thing started around this time when a friend of hers who owns this large tract of farmland called and told her this really. Weird thing just happened and she said Kelly I some real estate people just knocked on my door and said, they want me to sign this option and I don't know what to do. How much were they offering her for the land I believe that she said that they were going to offer her thirty thousand dollars an acre for her land and is that number unusual for this area? Yes. Her acreage in it resale at the. Time would probably be three thousand to five thousand dollars in ten times. So this is this is a huge jump and it was so big you. She didn't even know what to do at the same time. Kelly is also getting calls from all her friends who work in the local government and they're saying something's coming in something's happening. It's really really big going to be enormous it's going to be giant everybody is assuming that it has. To be some kind of development that needs a lot of land you know and they're theorizing about what it could be, and of course, they're waiting anticipation for the next village meeting. Okay. We'll call the village board meaning Monday six, thirty pm on twitter, and so they show up a village hall and there's no announcement in fact, nothing is said about it at all and then president makes a motion to go into closed session rope loose. I it. We're close social the video cuts off right at that moment degree and the trustees walk out of the room. And the village residents sit there waiting for like an hour and a half until they come back Mr President emotion to go back into open session second. Back, open. the report out from village amount. Pleasant is we had an interesting conversation about the. potential future cooperation between the villages regarding future development future development. That's all grew. What say how did it make you feel? Well A. Working with elected officials are having friends who are elected officials. You know there's always that respect for with a can say and what they can't say, but I could just tell that it was extraordinary. You know there was something in there is there was an urgency in what they were saying that this was perhaps possibly too big. So everybody.

"All it would take is just a little bit of factory for a week or two in Milwaukee Postal Service to seriously shave off a few percentage points Democratic voters. Be The easy. They're trying to do that. It will be easy to do and it would almost certainly make it. Easy win. For. Trump. However, they don't even need a target. Blue areas are blue districts because according to a recent poll of voters among those who say that they'll by mail eighty-one, percent support Biden and fourteen percent support trump, and among those who will vote on election day in person sixty, seven, percent support trump and twenty, six percent support Biden. So you don't actually need to target blue areas. All you need to do with in general and you will vastly tilt the results in trump's favor. Here's my question. Then when you say fuck with a male, you're talking about like delay because trump brings up over and over in his interviews and his whatever tweets and shit like that. He's like, oh. Yeah. So what happens if like you know all these people were going to the mail and means like we don't get an actual vote count for like days and weeks and it takes time I guess every time he says that on my head I'm thinking and so what I mean that is what it is. scheduled. To happen. So there's no grounds to say that the election is not valid. The result of my valid if they're not like called that night right I mean. So the fuck where you're talking about is what making bows disappear or just delaying them for a really long time, which ultimately shouldn't make it just making it like you don't even have to have like wrongdoing in that sense like deliberately. Mis. Misa delivering ballots losing them. I mean that would definitely efficient too. But you don't have to do that. All you have to do is caused delays and losses in general in the mail, and because of the ski on WHO's voting by mail, who's not from my mail that will, by Default Strongly that trump because even just just a few percentage points would change the whole race dramatically given how near the margins arm Wisconsin. So if you can even tell two percent of the votes away, our make them superior by accident just because everything's cluster, fuck Wisconsin goes for trump. what's going to happen is on election night it's GonNa look like trump's winning, and then slowly more and more it'll till towards Biden. As more roads get counted. That's just GonNa create a situation where trump and be like we'll look I won and now it says I didn't win like this is all rigged. Do you know that kind of thing? Yeah that's the narrative. That's a narrative he wants to set up and will likely play out just because the what we know about how are GonNa be voting this year. and. What trump wants and he's open about this is excuse to call the whole election into question. He's repeated at many times. This election is GonNa be rigged Ya like it does not matter today how badly trump loses the popular vote as long as and create enough confusion to get this matter before the Supreme Court, and if he can, he has a least a fifty fifty shot of winning and that's like. A pessimistic for him. He probably has better than that. If he can just make the decision be in Supreme Court's hands, he can probably count on a good outcome especially given all the voting ruins we've had so far that. Again. Disfavor voting access rights I. Think it totally depends on the case. Ah, the there actually is a way for him to create a strong case that like the Supreme Court can get behind it doesn't need to be that strong. That's optimistic. I'd like to think that but I just don't think it needs to be that strong would go with a weak case I. Think they would. They don't want it the supreme. Court. In the first place but I don't think they would vote in his favor. If it was a week I mean was Bush v Gore really strong case. Let's move on a bit because we also have you know this We have another presidential candidate who has oh my God the news around this has been crazy who is there to be kind of an upset from Leiden to suck away about black votes and that's conway and it has been a complete tragedy and terrible to watch this shit unfold in the last few weeks. Is this all? What is the Mercedes I? Honestly, every time Connie has shown up in the White House and this and that I mean I've I've been just. You know I've mocked him to and I've been embarrassed and disgusted and angry at the whole thing I think I just didn't realize at that point like how ill this guy is and I think it's so clear. Now I mean I think it's so clear that he. You know has mean his family has made it clear. He's had some very public. Kind of breakdowns in the last month or so. but his presidential bid continues and now it's been reported in the last week or two that they are gop operatives behind it and didn't news just come out that there was like a lot of faith signatures on some of the ballots that he or the. To get on to get on the ballot. On now, way I don't know if it's come out they are fake, but they certainly look fake. So good check out the how is not against the? Law. Against for the GOP. you know operatives behind is like what we're talking about people who are part of like trump's official campaign in different areas for now getting. For Connie or not campaigning for but. They've been behind like filing for his get him on the ballot in states. So it's not necessarily that the the I mean having a spoiler candidate during the ballot is like a rat fucking strategy is old as time itself. Deep Tint. Issue here is that the attorneys who assisted Connie and filing to get on the ballot in these key states are often republican attorneys and for some of them not album. Conflict of interest there in which case they presumably, we've had have this conflict wave by the parties involved that is Connie and the Republican. Party. So they didn't do that, that could be an issue but in terms of actually. Helping small on the ballot itself illegal, but it is dirty and bazaar and. Gross It also just doesn't seem like it's necessarily going to be effective like this whole assumption that Konya will peel off votes from Biden and not trump doesn't seem. It doesn't seem. To me though like it doesn't even seem like it's actually what I I don't think it's impossible at all that will see exact reverse I mean the political analysis behind it is definitely week if you think about the black Americans who might vote for trump versus black Americans who would vote for Biden right? Like who of those two groups?.

"The reason I think it's different in this case because I think there is a fairly good possibility that. That if Biden wins, he might step down after a term and the vice president I think. So I think there's a there's a different dynamic play this time. And you know He. If he, Wednesday's going to be the oldest president in history by a decent margin, and so this could be someone you know God forbid something happens could be the next. President? Yeah. Well, back on the things that will actually affect the twenty twenty election. I love you our resident skeptic. Keep going keep going. So we have Louis to joy the postmaster general who not only is busted middle twenty twenty take over this role. He is quickly diving into make efficiency adjustments to just change up the whole operation, the postal service for quote efficiency. Now again. Let's say you have been appointed to a job that you have no experience at you're in charge of this whole operation. was something you may have some you know some business experience but not spring, training operation. And this operation charge of now is facing its biggest. Event in the past hundred years of existence the most important crucial. Moment. In like what three months after this four months after this? What I move be it would probably are should not be to fire twenty, three senior leadership positions, and restructure operations across the board That is just a recipe for disaster Mind bogglingly poor management so Among the move, he's made far he has, for instance, cut are eliminated over time and he's basically restructure the post office where instead of trying to deliver all the Mail on time all the time They now have just leave policy where if letters aren't there and it would take ten minutes for the full packages be ready the trucks. The carriers supposed to just leave it and keep on going even though mean a day or two more for that male to ever reached US nation. Yeah and all this again is for efficiency and that they're trying to call it the overtime expense. Yeah. They're also removing machines. Yeah. That's what I was. GonNa say is I'd rather removing sorting machines, which means that they're going to. They're expecting postal workers to do sorting what manually that what's happening here. I think in that case when I was put together from the memo's and published or leaked is more trying to centralize operations as part of the cost saving measurement like Maybe. but what the actual effect has been, of course is just mass delays across. The country and terms of how the mail and packages liver however, ironically again, the the Amazon packages the ones that trump hates and thanks for pay more are suffering probably the least among. The the mail being delivered because of contracts that Amazon has with the USPS and the fact that if the joy let's those packages go late. The Post. OPS face severe financial consequences. So Amazon. Okay. Everyone else is now getting screwed by slowdown. and. So recently, like last week, he wrote a memo. Describing his. Orbital changes in the new sort of hierarchy at the post office and he had this line, he described that the changes will quote fundamentally change how we run our business I. firmly believe that these changes will transform us into a truly leader led organization. What's not even meet like this just full of buzzwords. That's what his like. Yeah, and he's like I want to appreciate everyone's by on whereby but basically what he's, he's all he's basically consolidated power in this one position right instead of like kind of having. A team of executives and all institutional knowledge and they've gotten rid of two dozen. People who have been there for ever and this guy, and I keep reading about you mentioned a to how he has stakes and competitor companies will companies we're talking about here we're talking about. The direct investments he has in competitors ups Oh. Okay. Though he has investments ups. So it was this was this an appointment that required confirmation. So, the post office runs differently. He was appointed by the board which was sick people who are placed there by trump and they chose the sky. So. It's a bit different from like a typical nomination scenario. That's kind of I was wondering how can somebody would those kinds of interests actually have been confirmed for this position? I mean, would that be the first time he will? Say He needs to divest, and hopefully that's being done. But I have not seen any confirmation that he actually has divested. So. Leading up to this election, which will be the most important Election involving voting mail in our history since the civil war anyway we have trump is spending what every other twitter talking about how much of a disastrous will be haunts the males sock how much the mail in ballots are going to beat. The tremendous catastrophe and trump has never been one to put any effort into proving himself. Wrong. Again this is basically GonNa be at best another Alabama sharpie situation where he has said something as the case in now, it must be the case. He's double down and certainly do nothing to fix it. Optimistically is he'll do nothing to fix it, but he has more reason than just being right to keep on destroying post service and more importantly to destroy its ability to handle the twenty twenty election. Traffic is in his campaign also suing I think like Pennsylvania or something for trying to do the. Ballot. drop-off boxes they. Yes. They are suing lots of the states for lots of reasons. Including Nevada Pennsylvania what they're doing is they're suing because Pennsylvania was putting up drop-off boxes was the word drop authentic ballot-boxes. I don't even know they're saying big big secure boxes ballots off and the trump campaign is arguing that there should only be one per a county. So like county one point, one, million residents would have the same number of ballot boxes one as with a small scouting like a few thousand people. which. Again just straight up anti-democratic straight up no pretense of wanting democracy to be in fact. They actively trying to make sure that free and fair elections cannot happen and that voting cannot be done. Fairly. So. Why is this a problem Well, they're also they're also doing stuff like raising the price from twenty two cents a ballot to fifty cents a ballot. So they'll ask expense onto the states as they're trying to miss election. this is this is a disaster in the making because one just general delays and lack of trust will cause a more general breakdown and faith election more general breakdown and the ability to administer it properly. But it also means trump's. So the GOP mega donor is in a position to do some serious factory, for instance. Take, Wisconsin the doer dice date for trump most likely in two thousand twenty. What was won by like six ballots twenty thousand, twenty, thousand dollars or something hardly anything in two, thousand sixteen. And Milwaukee. Major urban areas where. A Most of those democratic came from..

Hi Welcome back to the Forty Fifth Rob Yeah here and I'm excited because we have another guest this week, and of course, I'm always here would Susan Hey Susan how are you I'm great. Are. On the road I am still relaxing I'm still. Doing twitter, I cannot handle one more VP. Joke. Oh, you know it's really irritating. The is like come on, get to just do this. I just feel like it's stretched out or maybe it's because I don't even care I never care I don't care anymore Stewart, just get it over with to stop the twitter jokes where we get into all that I do WanNa, introduce our guest, and very excited that he's on I would like to introduce door Benson. Dora is an independent journalist who contributed to the Atlantic. The daily Beast Rolling Stone wired many of the publications he covers politics, tech and science I read and share a lot of his writing and I got to get to know him over twitter like. You know how many how many relationships are formed so welcome to the show door. Thanks for coming on this week viewings. Forever me today's very suspenseful day. It is the day that Biden is announcing his vice presidential pick right I. just got the. This is unexpected. It's GonNa be Malarkey actually. You know unexpected Malarkey. She's a great candidate. She's got a strong strong career. Look like you said, nobody cares like we're just like pick a potted plant. Let's just do this trump of course of is probably gearing up to. You know he's probably already has separate campaigns to attack any potential candidate. My bets are on Kulla Harris Stowe. But let's see you have any thought Susan. What do you think? I don't care I don't care all carrying has gone from my body. What about you do? You have a premonition? I wanted Elizabeth Warren the whole time, but I've long known that's not GonNa Happen. So I kind of my second choice was comparison I think the. Good odds that that could happen. Yeah. Well, I mean Elizabeth Warren I guess maybe as hopefully prime to take Senate majority seat I wouldn't be happy to see there as well. Well, let's we'll start off the top of every show is with the Kobe News and Lee for a long time or weekly we're going by quickly so we have. And little explosion in cases. So let's start there we are at five point one, million cases positive cases of Cova nineteen in the United States, we are very close to one hundred, sixty, four, thousand debts. We are four percent of the global population but account for twenty, two percent of covid related deaths, and people. Herman. CAIN is dead from COVID. That's news. Any probably caught it at the temporarily he absolutely caught at the trump rallies. They say reports are that he started feeling ill shortly afterwards and I think. he hospitalized like in the days right after the rally, right about a week a I, think more than that. But the timing definitely fits the rally. We'll never know what had happened but I am still kind of amazed that trump didn't get any pushback on this like it was not a thing. Okay he died. and. There was never any sort of attempted accountability. How do you get accountability for? Are you saying it's because journalists pushed? Just like someone draw those dots together like he decided to hold a rally, an area, those spiking cases he encouraged people, they're not to wear masks Herman Cain to not wear a mask several staffers who helped prepare. The rally were tested positive in the days before All the conditions were there for Kobe spread and it seems to have spread turn Kane who then died after being under later for at least three weeks and. There's crickets about this about the connection there. Again you can't prove it. So but doesn't that's the point he was engaged in the highest capacity encouraged people to be put at high risk and when the NFL happened, there was never any one. Willing to push him on that store jump in anytime whether your thoughts interjections swimming in. It is Kinda surprising that there wouldn't be some Republicans probably knew and liked him. Okay. You gotTa Stop The rally. Crazy you know it's possible that having behind the scenes I he's not doing more rallies that's for sure and he also cancelled in New Hampshire rally right? Like in the aftermath like at some point after Tulsa rally. But you know I mean, okay fine. We cannot prove maybe that he caught it there but you can prove that this man up until the rally. Repeatedly, rejecting the idea of masks he was you know he was sitting close to people. He didn't want to be part of like you know a no point to the administration say you know what there should have been more precautions taken Herman Cain Either he got it from the rally or he was already infected. When he went to the rally either way he probably shouldn't have been there. Nobody should have in there and he should have been amassed at a minimum, but you know there's a whole history of his Social media posts. And then dead silence, of course anyway. now, some more news. Schools have begun sending children back because they have like year round school, and in the last two weeks this is kind of insane in the last two weeks of July alone one hundred thousand children have tested positive was a forty percent increase and when I just did a search of US schools closing because of code like there were so many store because I thought. Oh, I mean we everybody saw the pictures out of that one Georgia school right that you remember that you guys. On Yeah and then that the the student who posted the picture got suspended but no there. So many stories now that it's like I was like forget it there's no point making a list of them so you can. Now the highest number of cases per capita and children as Arizona, but they are at this point going ahead with their plans to reopen schools very someone like in the last few weeks. Don't understand how this is seen as a good idea like even politically like it seems like they want to reopen school. So it's like look everything's back to normal like we did it. But instead, they're just going to get a ton of cases among children and their parents and their teachers, and probably a lot of kids are GonNa die like how does this look like a good plan to anyone maybe learned Herman Cain that they actually won't suffer consequences for it but children will absolutely die there'll be children who will die because of this We'll see how many But there there's not there's no chance there will be deaths from. This among the kits, your child doesn't have the die for this to be a horrible terrible experience. You know. I mean that's like the worst case scenario but for the people whose children have gotten this and I followed stories and many parents who whose children have suffered through it, it has been a really really difficult recovery. It is hard. It's heartbreaking when your child and it's just heartbreaking. It's exhausting when your child just has like the flu it it. Upsets everybody's schedules. Everybody's exhausted. It's really hard taking care of sick kids. Everybody's home right now we don't have child care You know it's so going through. Even, having your child is having Cova de and being sick from it. You know even if they need ventilators many children suffer from asthma and things like that. I, mean and then if I. was going to school where some kids tested positive. I'd be furious, right I'd be terrified. So politically, it seems very stupid. But yesterday Justin yesterday's briefing because once in a while I m listening to these briefings which have begun a new again. Trump once again, reiterated that children were basically immune and he also said we need schools to reopen specifically said this we need schools reopened because we need the economy to get going again..

"What's your sense of how athletes feel about all of this? I mean they're obviously GonNa be ridiculously disappointed that they're not going to get to compete this year but do you think that some of them are also feeling a sense of relief. I do I. I think these these questions about what to Olympic athletes thing. They're always really tricky to answer because there are so many of them and they're all over the world to five nations so three sports eleven thousand athletes that go. Do I really know what he's thinking in China? No no ethics of thinking in whole swathes. Well no I don. I suspects though they all want Sunday. I mean the thing that I I love about GonNa pick eggs is. Is this opportunity to see sports. I rarely say to see champions. The practitioners of these wonderful different Abso- obscure sports just blossoming shine and for the vast majority of them semi pros amasis pool. People dedicate a lousy put lives on hold college careers whatever it might be the professional craze on hold huge sacrifices made and they live on that. Foia Cycle. This is terrible time. This awful for them well and even just from an individual a financial perspective most of these athletes who as you said are not super famous. They don't have major sponsorship deals you know the USOC very famously gives its athletes. Very small stipend. That doesn't really pay the bills. These are athletes. Who COULD BE. Maybe working right now and can't really an extra year of not working essentially you're these F. As in what we would call the GIG economy. That's what a part time as they're doing a bit of fitness. They're doing better this Saudi of my country that quite lucky Olympic athletes equate well-supported here. But you're right other countries that no amendments. You're absolutely fantastic at what you do lucky enough to have a shoe sponsor or whatever it might be. You're struggling. You've made a big sacrifice to your school for as long as you have now. The thing I would say about Olympic athletes is they are unusual. They are unbelievably committee. They have made sacrifices already. The vast majority of them are just getting by. Because they want to be Olympia. It's so I think it will be challenges for them. I will be surprised in an an an an heartbroken if many of them can't make it next year for financial reasons because of this extra year but I will acknowledge that there is a risk. Thomas Bach had previously cited the eleven thousand athletes training for this as the primary reason. The didn't want to rush into a decision but at the same time you know all these member organizations in Canada and Australia are citing concerns for their athletes as their primary reason for wanting to postpone and make the decision as quickly as possible. Yeah I I think it was a genuine dilemma for Thomas Black Man. He gets a lot of criticism. I've always felt with badly. He does actually care about athletes. Thought he can be stiff. He speaks a lawyer and His his jokes are awful. So since the director general being Belgium basically a conflict of interest when it comes to chocolate I I will read the results there instead but I generally think that he cares about athletes so I did not think he had this dilemma. I just think offensive move really quickly really fast and wanting to be collegiate and a close with Japanese hosts and respectful. They were doing and all the sacrifices they've made all the money they've spent and also want to make sure the athletes dreams won't compromise. I just think events of mood really quickly in the last month three weeks two weeks and they just they just don't appear to have kept up. I think Sunday was them catching up. But I think we need this postponement on the. We need this urgency now. Is there any possibility that a month from now say postponing the Olympics will end up looking like a rash decision? Like if we do somehow manage to get this pandemic under control and we still had three months to prepare for the Games. Would it look like this decision was made prematurely thing? That's a really good question. And of course that will be playing on Thomas bags minds. The Japanese authorities mines is what they've presumably signed to themselves for the last few weeks. I think the reason to say no and this is the right thing to do right now and I still think we'll be the right thing to do. If God willing everything goes wonderfully well with carnivores from now from heroin and come June. We're playing sports all over the world. I still think you would have been the right thing to do. And I'll tell you what I think one. It's it's the impact on athlete preparations right now and I think also to be carrying on in the face of everyone else going the other way. This doesn't seem right to me to be paid for another big games for this sort of celebration of sort of health and vibrancy and the human spirit and finally Matt. What do you think is the most likely outcome here? What would postponement.

"He's a man that In the past wants to see presidents and I didn't quite pan out and ended up being the World Anti Doping Agency boss where he was outspoken. He's Oh man spoke to power and I think this is the you know the fact that he's just come out and given the game where it's said guys look we. We made the decision. We four weeks. He's kind of stage management. We've got to talk things through and and smooth things over with the Japanese but look of course we postponing. Let's back up for a minute. I'd love for you to help us understand exactly what is at stake here especially for Japan. What does hosting the Olympics mean for Japan? Why do they want to host these games in the first place? Staging Olympic Games is such a massive undertaking off For a country that you don't do it lightly and every country has a little story. They won't tell around may games. Japan is very much is around kick-starting the economy again getting back to those kind of good postal years where Japan was young and vibrant and it was on the APP. Also China's GonNa stole his thunder full bit other places in the Far East. Singapore will Taiwan other nations are doing really well Vietnam nations that I think perhaps in the Japan would have sort of felt. We have the top dogs around here. The heaven aging population so sports is hugely important and they spent a fortune on new venues those new infrastructure so getting them on a making the missing success is absolutely when they've been particularly important to prime minister. Shinzo Ave pickle. I'M GONNA get him out so he went to his areas in two thousand thirteen The vote was to dish out the games and it was very much sort of seen as a personal triumph. Him when they when they be assembled and betrayed the Games of the Thirty Seconds Olympia in twenty twenty awarded to city of Tokyo. He's very much bound up in this. His project is very much bound up in this. He wouldn't wanNA run an abridged games. If it's going to be postponed he will want to run the type of games. They were going to run this summer. Probably next year. How much money had Japan budgeted for the Tokyo Games? And how much money are they projected to have spent? I think we're now talking more about to thirteen billion. Us dollars but it could be doubled because the stuff they spend on the venues and putting the actual games on temporary venues refurbishing things building the village and so on and then there's the infrastructure improvements so you end up having train lines newports and airport terminals. Every Games has done this in my lifetime. So I think you could double it to say that it's twenty twenty five billion in. Us dollars now. But like I said a good half of that would be on Infrastructure Britishness of good people of Japan. Wore modell think brilliant? We got them ten twenty years at its heart. Can you walk us through the rather wild drama of the last forty eight hours? Starting with Sunday morning the ICEES executive balls held mostly meeting. The International Olympic Committee opened the door to a postponement on Sunday. When it said a final decision would be made within the next four weeks but it added that a cancellation was not on the agenda. This belated admission really. They couldn't ignore what was happening in front of their eyes. It will. What will all of us are experiencing around the globe? They ignore any longer. Four months is not that long away and we really do now have to talk very very seriously about this finding this thing and just the day before that emergency meeting. Ioc President Thomas. Bach had pushed back against the idea of postponing in an interview with a German radio station or for sure. Currency Niche for Schieber. I'm forced bunch. Elam Knicks is. I'm Scott he said quote. You can't postpone the Olympic Games like football match next Saturday. Well I think that that does speak to this. Beside did the Olympic Games are different. You know you can postponed football games. All Oh basketball leagues or whatever it might be. I think this is Thomas Beck who is so steeped in the IFC and all of its Self-aggrandizing nonsense symes the different special and we will not be rushed and pushed into this. The lights pretend that they're sort of almost like the holy Roman Empire or something and the everything has to be decided in triplicate and We'll have these long long sessions. Well pressure had been mounting on the I O C to make a decision on the Olympics for quite some time. Can you explain before Sunday? What that pressure had been hit launched come from the athletes? I felt clearly. It was coming from broncos sponsors as well probably more privately. It was coming from the National Olympic Committees in the US. The two largest sports had already made their face pretty clear track and field and swimming so I think it was. It was a bit of a perfect storm for the is seeing that you had the people that they feel they serve the athletes saying hold on. This is right. I can't try. This doesn't feel right to me. And at the same time you had if you like their key commercial partners broadcasters and sponsors saying pretty much the same thing and then on Sunday night just a few hours after the statement. Canada makes a very bold statement of its own in a move that happened late last night and has set off reaction around the world. The Canadian Olympic Committee announced Canadian athletes will stay home this summer. Cb FOLLOWED BY USTRALIA. Decision is that. They announced the agreed. The Australian Olympic team could not be assembled in the changing circumstances. Both here and abroad. What impacts do you think that had on the I o see this is the existential fair for the ISI is sort of part of their institutional. Memory they are terrified of anything that looks sounds like a boycott and so must back actually feels is very very personally himself. He was a fence. He was a very good fencer. He wanted gold in nineteen seventy six with West Germany and then didn't get to go to one thousand. Nine hundred. Eighty didn't get to go to defend his goal because of the boycott around the Moscow Olympics following the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan so this they Arab boycott is fair of athletes. Not Coming is pretty much the most serious thing that you can sign the say. So when candidates said that way no straight-set that Great Britain have been strongly. Hinson yet other nations have been strongly hitting it. The I was going to listen well. And why do you think Canestrelli felt compelled to do that and not just follow the? Isis's lead? That's a good question. Canada and Australia all FUSECO stick pawners of the. Ifc's they go to games. They symbolic delegations of athletes. They bid for things they they matter. Okay maybe they don't have the big brawl costea and commercial half the the the. Us would have or Mega Germany even Russia but they are significant pleasant. The that's the thing is also a a real tradition in both of those countries in particular of sort of Africa empowerment of letting their athletes speak up home political issues. There's certainly no kind of top down shish staying Elaine type philosophy in those countries so I think it was a combination of being Western democracies and having A tradition of letting athletes speak and the fact that they are very very much involved normally Olympic sport they are. They are Olympic nations. Do you think it's the responsibility to have made this decision? More swiftly without countries like Canada and Australia feeling the need to make these moves on their own well. This policy had some logic to. It's about a month ago. Opposes outbreak of this brand new virus in China at a pace be quite localized? The Chinese pates throwing absolutely everything. That's it it. It looks like that containment policy could work. Singapore had done something similar South Korea Taiwan so there was some encouraging signs in the region that could paps contain this. And don't forget the this part of the world has been through these more recently than the rest of us with avian flu with SAWS and I think Japan was hoping look if China can get get get a grip if we can contain it in all in our region. The summer we still far enough away all those things combined to. We don't need to make decision yet. Let's to see his plays out. We could be okay. WoN'T BE CRYING OUT FOR. A sporting festival this summer. I just think that that will change soon as it hit Europe and as soon as we saw to gallop away Iran Spain France now in the states now everywhere and people dying everywhere. And we're looking at these scary offs that that Russian Al. That logic just fell away going to begin his look slow. It has looked like it is trying to sort of ignore the obvious. And it's been on the road at when everyone else. He's saying though. This could feel right well and then on Monday USA.
