You start to feel that humidity hanging in the air and the monsoon is around the corner. We got some storms that air start building up in You either roll up from the Gulf or they'll come down from Mount Baldy. That area gets this world of thunderstorms arise right over Mount Baldy, and it rolled down from the room from there. But anyway they come. They're they're kind of a blessing and a curse because you want the rain and the benefits that the storms bring to her to the to the low desert when our plants are hurting first and water. But you don't want the results of the heavy winds and those downdrafts in the the the heavy A sheer force of of flatline winds that Khun just toppled trees. Yeah, There's a term in our industry called tree risk assessment, and it's It's just of developed skill to be able to analyze trees structurally and to determine If they're viable, is there is there going to be able to handle the forces of wind mean? There's some catastrophic winds Hurricane force winds, which, regardless of the structure of the tree is going to damage a tree. You know, you hope that the parts of the tree that are damaged will be small enough diameter. Inches that it won't be. It won't destroy the trees, beauty or function in the landscape. And we did we talk about when we do true risk assessments about That size of branch, which is most likely to fail as one of the components of that assessment, and if its a three inch diameter branch that's going to fail, not a big deal. If it's a 12 18 inch diameter branch that's pretty significant loss of Of the tree. And, of course, there's entire tree failure, which usually.

Brian Johnson we've got I've got to ask one thing you mentioned earlier about how you know you mow every day which will get into and I can't find the Bermuda grass growing fast enough right now to be mostly every day but. the painting you know by the end of this week you've got a new set of grass when you were doing a issue and then the cardinals the next day how would you it was there like a paint stripper you would go apply to the grass or do you just paint bigger bolder colors over the old one we we just painted over the old one and one one thing that worked out really well as both teams the cardinals and AS you agreed not to have a center low during that time so that kind of save the middle of the field from some of that constant pain but in the end zones the S. U. letters back then we had Rary kinda NARAL letters and we always pain in gold and then that the cardinal letters were kind of fatter red letters that we would paint on top overnight and that would cover about eighty percent I would say of the A. S. U. letters and then we would get a little green die out in kind of a green up the little goal that was peeking through so well I take a lot I I I I'm very I take a lot of pride in the fact that we you know we made that work for eighteen years we kind of we were tired and we always made the effort to make that field look as good as it could for the cardinal game the next day you know it was it was a lot of hours but when I'm happy with with everything you know after all those years the cardinals never had one complaint with the field are never you know they just kind of left us alone and I I took it as no news is good news. now a lot of times when you're watching a football game you see in merry somebody run out of bounds and they might mole for a photographer or referee have you ever been marked out by one of these guys well you know I know I I never have. the closest thing I could say was I a couple years ago I was working in an NFL game over in London and we were out on the field kind of fixing it up at halftime that kickers came out pretty early and they started kicking on the net wasn't up down at the other end of the field so I kinda sprinted down to the end of the field to raise that nat and I I thought it was younger than I was I I I tried to hurdle of the media at the video boards run in the in the field I caught my leg got it and I I broke my elbow sold man that was the that was a painful flight back the next day back here with a broken elbow but during the game I've never I've never I'm usually pretty careful your job gets done it a issue all football season. and now you traveling to do the Superbowl every year you just mentioned the game in London. where else is this job taking. well. it I'm very fortunate I I love to travel and so I've been to a lot of cities with the Superbowl and and actually this Friday I'm leaving for London to to do a game over there so we just Mexico City were doing some games on Mexico City actually number years ago it wasn't an NFL game but there was a kind of a start of football league that had a game over in Taiwan so I I travel over there to to paint that feel for them so it's really afforded me the chance to get around and and experience different cultures and and you know I I know I've painted a preseason NFL game over in Dublin in Ireland and using some of the primitive equipment that they had over there was really kind of interesting and and that Taiwan trip by was very very interesting in terms of rounding up supplies over there to that I needed to to work on the field so I've run the whole gamut from just primitive equipment in Taiwan to like top of the line equipment at the Superbowl so it's it's very very interesting. and your big Bruce Springsteen fan you got to see him in concert when the halftime shows I did I did I was you I that was one of my favorite super bowls are you know I I've seen so many of him that sometimes they kind of all look alike you know the games you know tend to kind of look alike but that was a very you know I had a little side that with the a friend of mine on that game a coworker at the Superbowl and I had the cardinals and so I saw Bruce Springsteen at half time and it was a very enjoyable game and then I got my head shaved at a bar after the game because I lost the back so that was that was kind of a memorable night yeah. why one as details about the bet you ever hear a funny story during the break about I have a dream that just tackling somebody yeah you know I I've always you know every once in awhile I see on TV fan run out in the field and I I always wonder how they can get so far out there and and avoid all the security and then last season my dream came true this guy ran on the field right in front of me and I nobody was going after him so I I went out there and and tackle them and pick them up by the collar and shoved him off the field so I it wasn't easy for you.

They're like stabbing starting you know a lot of bad stuff and disclose school school by thousands of people and i think they didn't want me to continue in that atmosphere as well so they're looking for that well with with the critter crafts yeah..

"Right and left east coast, west coast, male female, you know, red blue and just find some sort of off the grid third way, or, you know, reinvent things basically, and how you know how misguided or how how misbegotten that adventure into trying to reinvent things can. And I guess that's exactly where the adventure story and the election do kind of come together because I think the election of Trump in some ways, you know, it wasn't really as we've come to know it of a right wing conservative reactionary backlash so much as it was a kind of spasmodic outbreak of the American fantasy of doing something completely other. You know? I mean, he yes, he ran as a Republican. And I have plenty of reservations about Republicans. But he really was offering until something new on the menu. It was like, you know, it was like going in and out and knowing that you can order animal style. Like, let's just make this crazy now. And I think that that's what a lot of the characters in the book are seeking it various levels of their conscious or unconscious selves is they they want out of the system as they know it, and that is a very, but you know, it's always it's a very understandable urine. Joining the hunger for that escape from the trap of everything as we know it is very something. I relate to but it also invites catastrophe. Yeah. Especially in the desert, which is a place of extremes where you can easily disappear for good. And but as it is trope that California's the place for reinvention rate than that east coast. Just come. Well. Sure. Sure. I mean, it's more than just a kind of a trove that California's the combination of the American fantasy of go west and make a new make utopia out there somewhere. So one of those people who did that in real life was Leonard Cohen who did spend years at the center on mount Baldy, and that's where in your novel fee Phoebe missing friend went and she went to go find find her because her name's Arabella because she was really into Leonard Cohen year. Also, you've written about music talking heads in particular where you particularly until Leonard Cohen. Well, I do like Leonard Cohen, and I you know, all these fascinating associations for him. Because he's you know, he was a novelist. I and then he runs away and becomes this Buddhist. He he himself is a emblem of a kind of slippery reinvention or escape he represents also a fantasy about some sort of new aquarian ideal about the sensitive, man. And and yet he's you know, he's really into women, and he sings about them all the time and one of the things this book is about is is is gender, and you know, the tribal weird people that are in the desert. It in this book, some of them are are men who are trying to kind of do that like Robert bly reinvent. What manhood would be and they're coming up gravely short of anything really appealing. But you know, I sort of without having an answer to this question. I'm very interested in the question, you know, and this is very contemporary question. You know? Okay. We know what bad look like we definitely have finally got them really really clearly in our view finder. And we all are obsessed with how they look and what they do. But what do we want? Instead, you know, what would the right kind of masculinity, actually, look and feel like and so the feral detective himself as a kind of experiment in,.

Let's go back channel nine live. Come on. Let's go Curtis channel nine. Aircr buckets dropping water and one L A county fire helicopter out here. Now, we saw that Heli LA county helicopter just a few moments ago. Didn't see it make a drop, but it is moving around out there. We have I believe that what we're seeing is only a portion of this fire. It's actually in a canyon out there. We do know that the LA county fire saying that this is a ready at twenty acres and growing with visual of up to two hundred it is moving away from the homes out here that wrote that you see down there at the bottom of the shot that's going to be mount Baldy wrote. Now, the fire department is on the ground. They have a couple helicopters in air. There is probably that is a vehicle probably driving right there. That's another road on the high side of it. But they say this is about twenty acres right now light wins this evening. That's good news for these firefighters. They it is moving up hill. But they're saying that it's moving away from home. That's where they're getting that number where they're saying about two hundred acres could burn if it's allowed to run free because it'll run up that hill side right now. Very slow moving flames. And of course, you could see the fire department there on the ground. And of course, we know they're in the air. The great news moving away from home this evening, and again this happening in the San Antonio heights. Just north of the Claremont area that road that you're seeing right there. "Yeah. Any word on the cause bub? No. 'cause it this time right now, these firefighters are going to try to get those containment numbers up and get that fire at least slowed down if not stopped, but there's no wind out there. So the smoke bus be just laying back on top of that fire right now, though, the fire is burning little difficult to get these shots. A lot of spoke out here because there's no win is very lazy at falling back on these flames. But you can see a number of firefighters out there on mount Baldy road. We're also hearing not Baldy road probably going to be close tonight for traffic because of the because of all the firefighter activity. Over a latest brushfire in San Antonio heights. Just under mount Baldy will continue to follow this story here on Keiko Moniquet Cal nine show. Yeah. That's Euclid out there or a mountain mountain avenue. It's on it's on the two ten north of two ten slides on up into into the patois hills. Yeah. Just east of the fifty seven. Between the five and the Fifty-seven north of the two ten am. You wanna hit that early before it gets into the the mountains there? Although I think that area burn recently. Maybe who knows but I think it did. And so they're fighting that fire right now, but the conditions are our favor. The fires now it's dry out there there there is some wind of they're calling for perhaps tomorrow. So they want to get that out a SAP. Now fortunately for that fire in that area. I think there's a reservoir out there in San Antonio canyon where they can pull water up very close by and drop it on that fire on that nasty ass fire at nasty fire F that fire. Well, I'm I'm pissed. These fires did share and get to hear your your unintentional bleep. No. Did you? You're perfectly timed bleep is. She and now you were you were out yesterday. Right. Where you go skiing at least, dark parking lots at sixty five hundred feet. Okay well that's sort of the same as Lake, Tahoe south south Lake Tahoe when you're standing at the lake it's sixty five hundred feet above sea. Level and when you go up on their ski lifts. The first level I think, is nine thousand feet and you get off. And you can. Walk around you. Can only do that on the trip coming down it doesn't make a, stop but you can get off and walk around it is. Amazing in the winter I interviewed the folks over there in June a, couple of years ago and I was so enthralled by what they had to say I had to go out and. Visit and when I visited that's September, I spoke to one of the people. From heavenly mountain and she was. Talking about what it's like when they're? Snow and then, I went? Bananas and said got to come back when there's snow so we went back three months Later in December and? When we you know it was sunny and lovely at at the Lake Tahoe level at sixty five hundred feet. We. Got, on their gondola things went up there ski lift things and we. Got off at nine thousand feet, and it was snowing like crazy and my. Husband took pictures and I really need you know, what if I'm clever I'll see if I can get a blog up pronto so you can see. Some of those photos because I don't think we ever. Impact on me that, I should remember something I saw on. An old and I'm talking old. This has to be thirty years. Ago an old daytime TV show For those of you that can remember. I want to say it was Mike Douglas show anybody remember him A, fellow came on he and his wife and their two month old baby somewhere in California on June day a gorgeous June day decided to take drive up some, mountainside and they got caught in a blizzard, in June in California And In any event you can, Google you'll find it. Somewhere one of the things he suggested that I wanna remind my audience about and really everybody should carry in their car twelve months a. Year are those Mylar those, skinny thin Mylar sheets They look like a picnic blanket but you know they're they're. So really super thin that you can do a few things, with one you can wrap around you for insulation to roll your windows down a, little bit sticking in the window closed the window up and have the. Mylar over the roof so if they sent out helicopters to find you, got, yourself stuck in the sun will, reflect on the Mylar or if they're searching at night the lights will shine on it, and they'll realize there's somebody down there that's. A wonderful little, thing to keep, with you people's just. Safety story but but that is that's a reality isn't it that you know you can be literally you could play golf in the morning. Go skiing in the afternoon, or vice versa Yeah. We we have that amount Baldy we have. Little we, have raised a ski race? And, a golf tournament on. The same day people playing well. It's kind of nice to be able to. Be close such a such a such, a steep road, that, goes from the valley to the to the ski area only twenty minutes and you can meet down in the sun or it can be up on top schemes. Now you mentioned that, you've got twenty five of these tent bungalows that are out. There they're available during the milder weather months but they're not, in the winter so what are the months when the twenty five ten bungalows are, available we open them in may and we close when October typical in. A lot of places that may to October routine and and then you, said, you had cabins so the how, many cabins are there well there's in mount Baldy there's not a lot of cabinets there's. Probably up here in mount Baldy alone there's Probably twenty two cabins. That you can rent by the night are. They yours, or those are somebody else's? Most, of them the only. Ten of 'em remind in the. Other ones belong to another resort called mount. Baldy The corn buckhorn lives which is another. Lives it's up here there is another resort. It'll be opening, up shortly probably in the next year little have more cabins available right now they're not open A lot of people stayed in some of the hotels down by the airport which is in Ontario which is. Only a twenty minute, drive up here twenty. Five minutes so. A lot of people. Stay in like the Hiltons. And those kind of bigger big-name hotels that are at the bottom. Of the mountain Yeah but then, you don't get the same atmosphere when you do, that to you. Know it's not the same as being in the mountains now I like airport hotels the night before I'm going to get on a flight Ten? It's, convenient other than that I mean there's something to be said about really, being in, the destination to kind of drink in the mood. Of the place now but. Then you saw them what is it that you have If you've. Got a lodge. Mt Baldy, lodge how many moons accommodations are there we have we have ten ten cabins and during certain parts of the year there, six up available sometimes there's, more but six year round ones They're, always. Available six, cabins and they we have a? Swimming pool. Volleyball courts basketball, courts we, have a lot of things for people to do and then. There's a lot of hiking up mall bowling You know it, just sounds like a major league step back in, time Built, in eighteen, fourteen yeah you know what I was just about to say Before you offer that was it sounds like the kind of experience you would have expected people in the nineteen. Twenties to have had and. There you go with your nineteen fourteen that's perfect But that's you know I just I that kind of vision of how people. Used to Location, and there's a lot to be set for that So just in that vein Do you have internet access or the people really get to have a vacation? And talk to one another We have limited access we have access in in. The lives. Of self but the cabins you don't have internet access and we don't have. Cell service up you're either so there's a pretty away from? Everything when you come to my Baldy lives can. You. Imagine people actually have to talk to each other that's exactly how you really forced him into that Yup Wow what are you love best about mount. Baldy Oh I liked it because the, weather's really really nice here most of the time and we're, close to the city and close, to the. Mountains and you can do just, banking go. Surfing the morning ski in the afternoon play golf. Do. All kinds of things are living in Syria Clearly neat place to, live actually. I've been here for thirty five thirty years so I enjoy. It.

"A hike to the top of my Baldy which is ten thousand feet if you're a hiker and you can also enjoy restaurant which you can have as beautiful views of southern California and I'm in the Nicosia. The skyscrapers down in a. and the. Ocean and Catalina. Island. Which is as the crow. Flies it'd be about forty miles from from the top of our mountain so it's it's kind. Of a unique experience in southern California to be able to see, that the desert on one side and the ocean on the other because we're right on the top of the mountain there so? It's kind of a neat thing Our our. Summer businesses really gotten big in our winter businesses continues on the year round so we're a year round resort now instead of just a winter resort which we used to be years ago this ten bungalow you. Described is that what they call your It's like a year only these are these are a little bit different they're more like what they have in Yosemite they have their they got a. Hardwood floor there a regular like with with real real windows and doors, the doors are like a regular house. Store and the windows are, glass and you can look out But it's pretty pretty comfortable I is that only for summer use or. Use those the winter to. Unfortunately we. Have to take him down in. The summertime because we get pretty heavy weather, in the wintertime, when it snows they wouldn't be, able to, hold I didn't think so that's why I. Was asking the question yeah the you're the year that they make are are are able to be In place all winter long but we have, such high winds up here during. Our early storms. That they would probably get blown over two. So, we don't we don't keep them up we take them down knocked over My husband was an equal scout his father was scoutmaster it was there for part. Of my husband's. Hidden agenda that he would. Make a camper out of me And when I like the way you giggle and then. When we got married the first summer we went on a camping trip which, one day I need to write a book about or make a hit comedy series but. One of the things we did. Was we camped and. In his genius we had one of those things you pull behind you that pops up a pop-up camper It had a nice big bed and whatever and then it had a screen door and all that and it folded. Down to nothing in you pulled it behind you we rented it from someplace, rent a camper thing and one of the places we camp was in Canada among trombone Which was the mountain unfortunately where tasha Richardson skied into a tree Yeah that's where I am now it's very fashionable there's all. Kinds of huge brands that, you would recognize immediately of built hotels then it was. Quite primitive but he decided to everybody was camping was Andrew bogusch, everybody who was camping. Was, nestled at the bottom of mount Trumbull And they were all in the tree area there he decided that it'll be. So much more, fun to be up on this mountain and actually where he set up our pop-up camper was at the ski jump and the wind came over that mountain that night thank God, he put tree logs, in in front of the tires, because I had this fear, we were gonna. Go sliding down the mountainside with the camper behind us and make a drive. In out of this little, restaurant shop kind of thing where you could rent skis. In the winter but this was August and it was just so So, when you say win, the coming over the mountain For somebody in a tent I get it I remember something like two o'clock in the morning saying to, him something like from the, scene from sound of music and I said to him? Do you think it would be better if we sang This is my life ends, tonight now Wendy on top of a mountain can be treacherous now yes again the, rooms that you how many how many accommodations do you have in your, lodge at the at the ski left we have at the field for. The tenth bungalows we have, twenty five of those, Tampa Anglo's that. Are available for rent the lodge which is. The other thing we talked about is to mount Baldy lodge which is in the sound. Of the bottom. Of the of good here it's down in the village the mount Baldy village and we have we have cabins that we rent they're in they're, more like your traditional type Gavin with a nice smile They're nice cabin, with nice amenities and regular hotel room we're gonna take a quick break, and come right back with talking with Ron.

"Travel with Stephanie Abrams Hold your I hope you have. Your mittens and your. Parker, on 'cause. We're going scheme well not quite I, don't think they have snow yet but we're going to find out it is certainly possible because we are talking about California where like so, many other places in the world like Sun Valley, and places like Coronado in Spain where they have sole programs Where when you're down in, the city of Granada it's all sunny and warm and then you go up the mountain and there's no and if you if you are, an expert skier you're not gonna be happy there, I'm gonna tell you now But if you are a beginner or an. Intermediate you'll be, real happy there because you know, the mountains are challenging enough for. Somebody at that category but This is the time when you should be thinking, about Thinks now and start making your plans and California's one of those wonderful places where you, have the same opportunity to, you wanna be in son you wanna be in warm plenty of that, to go round and then head for the higher elevations and. You will find places to ski and, have some fun but we're talking with Ron Ellington centers the president, of mount Baldy ski lifts and the mount Baldy lodge and You are mentioning. That at this time of year since still August people are doing kind of summer outdoorsy things. Including your news zip line so if. You've missed that people you're going to be able.

Was attractive to you Well, I was always this was a ski racer when. I was young and I like to get in the ski business so. I ended up coming up? Here in buying resort. Mount. Baldy lodge and then I? Got, involved in the. Ski area and so now I involved in both of them Wow So what do you wanna talk about, first you wanna talk about the mountain and skiing you and talk about ski. Lodge, well we have we right. Now we're in our summer season at the mount Baldy ski, lifts and we just put in a new zip line this. Year that's a new attraction and for this, season and that's a it's four lines of people race across a, canyon, you you go up and you put on your gear and they send you off down across the canyon and you four people at a time go. Down so it's like a. Race so that's why we call it as a plan race lines and the people parallel to one another or your back to. Back, no they're all all each have their own, line but they all voted the same place. Senate so the they ended up on the same. Platform so you all forego at the same time and.

"Going to, be snow in November, December before you get nuts in January. With everything you got to do to, keep everybody on target for their April fifteenth. Or extended filings And, that's why for us here at a travel with Stephanie Abrams and travelers for one one Thinks snow starts in August this is when you should be planning your ski trip and one, of the reasons is that if you wait until November or December to start thinking about skiing You're gonna wind up settling for what's available rather than, selecting what you really want All right I'm a great believer in platinum experiences and travel That. Means put a little effort into making it perfect And I happened to stumble across a place I know. Nothing about this wonderful chance for us to learn together Because we're gonna be talking With I have on my paperwork run, Ellington but I'm looking at something on my computer screen that, says able, Ellington both of them were named. President so we're going to find out if the same person With the double personality here or I don't know maybe, I twin brothers or something happening I who is at mount, Baldy now, you gotta love a place called. Baldy don't you I mean does that contradict image of Something you want to cozy up to the little potbelly, maybe mount? Baldy from, mount Baldy ski lifts Inc Located..
