A Rocky Time for Google's Hardware Division

"Know who's not doing great. Google's hardware division. There have been a lot of shakeups and if you have been following along with the news as of last week then you might have heard about some. You might have heard about some t that's been spilled over at mountain view. Hq So as we learned from this very revelatory article published in the information which is a subscription only publication We are actually going to kind of give you the Quick Little T. L. DR points since not everybody can go immediately and read it So I one of the big reveals was that Mark Levin the person who is basically in charge of that wonderful Pixel Algorithm that made photos look so nice He left back in March. So actually since we've been in quarantine probably maybe right before he left who knows So that along with the departure of Pixels Mario Qudos last August which was kind kind of quietly You know snuck under the rug. This wasn't really something that we knew about. I mean we just found out about this last week really Sooner approach I was actually on the latest verge. Cast to Talk Abou this particular report He said that hardware is hard and that Google's playing to continue playing the long game by integrating the Hardware Division with nest absorbing ACC's mobile division and a couple of other little bits. They're just KINDA UNIFY. Those teams versus having them be in kind of their own spaces. He also talked about two to three years for deeper investments to bear fruit. I'm assuming that was you know relating to the Pixel lineup but we are coming upon the what the fourth bill for this one You know this also could possibly tied to the rumors that Google is creating. Its own chipset. And there's a lot of folks out there wondering if that news is something that's going to Kinda herald us into this new age of Pixel devices. What do you guys think or? Do you think this is all just kind of a don't you know? Let's Ya tempest tempest in a teapot. Yes yeah I mean I guess the question is are we worried about where the direction of Pixel phone when you've got the person who's behind arguably the critical key feature of the phones from day one along with another person who's critical to the division as a whole stepping out does does that signal any any warning You know any warnings Well yeah any warning signals around that I'm not sure how much effect this change would have on it. How much of Their DNA is already placed on the Pixel Brand But I mean you know it's also really important too to note that the Pixel devices as a whole hasn't really lived the world on fire. They certainly have done what Google intended for for them to do. I think they probably intended for these. These devices to go toe to toe with with the devices like the iphone and Samsung devices. And they're just not I mean but we are on. I'll I'll take all object to that though based on what though I don't I don't get the sense that Google ever expected this to go toe-to-toe the iphone in any capacity. I think that's I think that's almost a foolish endeavor. I think what I always took away from the from the Pixel. The pixels placement was to create the best in Google class. You know device to show off everything to do with android to really set the bar for Samsung End. A she see end one plus and all the other folks all the other. Oem that are using the the operating system. I think to to try to put out a device that would go toe with the iphone. Would would you know like it's you can after all this time period right? So what you have to do with the lead. By example so in that regard I think the Pixel has been a success. I think I personally never expected pixel sale. I think it would be it would be ignorant. It'd be naive to think that all of a sudden the whole world was going to be using a pixel been you have so many millions of of people who are in the Samsung ecosystem and so many millions of people in Motorola or whatever. It might be so I don't know I and I don't know what their goals are with the program. Who knows. I think if you if you if you create a piece of hardware correctly it. It doesn't have the DNA of just one person it could be said that the fund was Steve Jobs as last big project at has. Dna was all over it. But here we are. You know fifteen years later and that that piece of hardware keeps rolling on. Yeah so I it's. It's the future of the device will be defined by if they can outlive people who come and go and the you know becomes its own entity that other people you know becomes a some the sum total parts of everything every every put into it

Time To Reinvent Your Life?

"How are Ya how awesome is weekend? It was a lot around here. I live in new SMYRNA Beach Cherry here in Florida outside of Daytona. And over the weekend. They lifted a lot of the stay at home. Motorola restaurants stores started open. I gotTa tell you also from the beaches and it was really odd to see all these people in bathing suits and boats and stuff and headed to the beach. It's it's been so long this kind of an odd feeling actually. Don't even know what to think about it right now. Just don't know configured out though it is what it is right. Also the daily boost from motivation to move dot com every single day. No matter what you gotta figure out stuff certainly happens to make you work at it. You have dreams ambitions desires things you WanNa do things you wanna get on track or back on track with it but at the end yeah life gets in the way and we have to deal with it. There's one thing I know for sure. Life will always get in the way. They're always challenges. They always have to be managed in some kind of strange way we have to. Sometimes her head screwed on straight. You know something that I learned in the past couple of weeks and I would have been talking to it just a ton of people and this is one of the biggest lessons I picked up on everybody. Everybody has a different perspective of what's happening right now. Everybody depending on what job there in. What part of the country they live in some people are are not working at all. Some people are working endless hours. Some people are still getting paid. Exactly what they got before but they're working eighty hours a week and have no time to do anything that will frustrated. Some people just want to get back to work in the can't everybody's in a different spot and yes a lot of people affected by this virus. A lot of people have been lost in this virus so I've really gotten perspective of that just by talking to people all over the world about how were all writing this same storm. Many many different boats together and so people in small boats and some enlarge votes. It's crazy but hopefully God willing. It will settle here soon. My name is Scott Smith the founder and the chief motivating officer here at motivation. Move Dot Com. I'm sure happy you're here today. There are tons of places you could be. This is going to good place because we're talking about a little reinvention today. A favorite topic of mine and something has been a lot of time helping a lot of folks do. It is Monday and that means I was thinking about things I want to do in my life now this weekend you. I'm always talking about exploring the possibility well. I got to explore the possibility this weekend. A friend of ours owns and I'll pack a wrench to and as you said. Hey can you bring your tractor over and help me move some dirt around and you have to put some dirt and some stalls can yell at thought out and get detractors. I've got trigger and I I took my track over there. John Deere and I spent the entire day helping her. But you know what I learned. I explored the possibility of doing dirt work in a neat cool tractor all day long and I. I realized I wasn't going to be something I ever aspired to do. As a living not nothing wrong with it but it wasn't going to happen so I knew my homework. I'M GONNA look at my world and say what do I like about my world? What I don't like about my world and okay do I like to attract or work for my neighbor. Well sort of venue. She asked again. I would help but would I try to avoid it. Heck Yeah it's not really my list right now and that's all we have to do with homework. That's it. We look into our life the things that were doing the things we'd like to do things that we don't like to do things you wanna say yes to things. We want to say no to decide how we're GONNA handle it in the future when you do that when you assess how your life is going to be and you just a few minutes every single day. I like it every single day. You want so if you want to. You'd be surprised what happens if you don't do that. You'll be surprised. Ten Years Fly Pie. And You wonder how you got there. See it every day. So do your homework. If you need help remember get the perfect planner. It's in the resource section of motivation. And WE'VE DOT COM easy to find. They're just click on that and download it and watch the video. It'll explain to you how to how to hold time for yourself. Maybe you got some extra time right now you can use it so let's talk about reinventing. Costano a pretty good time right now. I mean the past month has created a nothing short of a massive disruption in our lives. No doubt about that. So why not take advantage of this journey back to normal and maybe switch things up now? This is a nonstop never ending specialty and expertise. I have done this for a lot of years really being able to go come where I am and just become something different when I want to and helping so many people do it so I have a lot of experience in this world and it's a great chance to do it in fact it's been said you've heard the phrase before never let a crisis go to waste. We got one right now right. There's a disruption right now and when something has been disrupted you have a chance to wiggle and move and shake and bake and do everything you WanNa do. Make a few changes so when he wanted some tweaks as we move ourselves back to what is going to be normal here in the future or you WANNA total reinvention. The process is very much the same use the same steps. No matter what you WANNA do. Little suffer big stuff ready number one and this is a big deal and it's usually the one that people have already done but don't realize they've done it. You must acknowledge that something needs to change. Doesn't sound like a whole lot but you'd be surprised. Lots of people are trying to fix all kinds of things and not recognize as underlying change. It has to happen so when you recognize. There is something that needs changing. Listen to your gut into crisis. We're in right now. Lives are disrupted and you're thinking wait a second. How did I get here? How did this happen? Whether it's my fault. Non My fall how could I have avoided this? How could I made it easier and that gut feeling might be telling you make a few changes so if and when it happens again you're in a different spot number to be honest your inner thoughts and your feelings are real. We ARE EMOTIONAL BEINGS. And so that's where it's GonNa come from now. We have to transfer that into logic right but they are telling you the truth. They're telling you something has to change so listen to what's in there really reading yourself. An honor what. You're feeling. Translate that into actions. You'll see what happens. So first acknowledging ing that we really need to make a change in order to get the the impact that we want and to be honest with these feelings are yours. A lot of folks will say yea. I don't know it's kind of running around my head. Coaching and work with people one of the biggest things I do is validate that feeling. Validate that thought. I tested and validated. To make sure it's real and often in the process they go out the way you said it back to me. I can see that. It's this right so honored that clearly understand why you want to reinvent something you gotTa know this now. The wise always a very powerful thing but when you understand exactly why you WANNA make some changes and really feel it. It's GonNa get you excited. And that is a power that will move you forward through the journey. You're about ready to take. We should ask yourself a favor question. I think I got this the book the One thing. What one thing can you do or not? Do that will have the most significant impact on your life. It's an extremely powerful question. You're trying to make a reinvention of yourself because if you're trying to move in a certain direction there is something you can do. It may be changing jobs and maybe starting a business may be quitting the job. Who knows what is going to be. I don't know your situation right now but there's got to be one thing maybe it's moving. Maybe it's paying off some bills. I don't know what it's going to be. But there is one thing you can do that or not do. That's going to have a huge impact and immediate instantaneous. Impact on your life. Don't be afraid of that. Go find it. Why take your time looking forward and dabbling around when you just think about it a little bit and figure out what to do? I want you to set a sprint goal. I thought about this when I wrote this down. I typically will say a ninety day goal so the at least ninety days I went to sprint toward at your focus goes in that direction. You WanNa make the change now. Ninety days is something anybody can do but I will recognize ninety days. It's a longtime particularly in the The upheaval we feel these days. So my first thought was well. Let'S CUT BACK THIRTY S. Push everybody for thirty days and do that and I like thirty days. Anybody can do thirty days so I'm going to give you a little bit of leeway here I want you to sprint for at least thirty but a fixture think three months if you can hold on for thirty days and then go ninety you will change. Your Life. I promise you a lot faster than you think it won't be the all-time

Impact of COVID-19 on the Cosmetic Industry

"Numbers are starting to roll in about what's happening to the beauty industry right now. According to NPD prestige clean beauty is up. Eleven percent this year despite the rest of beauty sales and this prestige beauty being down fourteen percent and I think we might have talked about this before but I expect to see more of this. People really interested in health wellness ingredients and they wanna feel good so the type of beauty that is starting to sell is the clean beauty categories. Very interesting what is clean. I what if I was doing the actual news online TV somewhat of the background? Who would come by and just like give color commentary on everything the newscasters? That's the job. I want that is your job right now. Okay next up. Excellent news out of Brazil with regards to animal testing. Brazil's largest state actually had banned animal testing on cosmetics and there was a challenge there by industry trade groups. That wanted to still be able to do that. Lower the Supreme Court. I know it but get this. The Supreme Court in Brazil ruled that the state does have the authority to ban animal testing. And that is such good news for cruelty. Free beauty advocates down in South America. I WANNA meatiest like no cruelty advocates. That's it will lobbyists for cosmetics companies. Want to save money. I'm guessing but even he I think most to industry people are getting on board right now realizing get that. Bunny get that cruelty free. You know. Okay I'm doing a tick tock. News item again. Watch tick tock guys. It's like what I've been doing to find out what's going on with beauty there are. This is so scary zero. Take a radio's of people. Removing their moles and skin tags at home you guys have no I love. Diy Dermatology but please do not try this right now. One video of skin tag removal had ten million people watching it and then you know how the kids are like with the Purple Shampoo thing. One person puts up a tick tock video. Everybody's gotTA TRY IT. In case it's not clear dermatologists everywhere say do not try to remove any skin tags or moles yourself at home especially moles. You need to get them checked by Dr. Do some if you can't get to the doctor and you're super worried or wait till you can get a doctor's appointment last up this should surprise no one. Cbd sales are expected to spike during the pandemic according to a survey by consumer insights for bright field group forty percent of CD consumers expect to intensify the frequency of their CBD usage. I'm still confused on this because for me when I take. Cbd Internally it does nothing for my anxiety or my sleep levels as we know. I only take it topically for inflammation but whether it is a placebo effect or some people I'm sure do get a anti-anxiety effect from sales of CBD are expected to. I think the CBD curious are now like if not now when I like that Hashtags TVD curious. Okay last item. Just tell us about support creatives. Okay so support creatives. I'm very excited to see. The spotlight shone on beauty freelancers. Because everyone's her in in the economy right now most people I guess if you own Amazon. Or not but Support Creatives is a nonprofit that provides financial assistance to people in the beauty. World also has mentorship educational programs so their first campaign is a Motorola razor campaign with celebrity makeup artist. John we love Sir John. He did this big contest with them last week offering corporate donations and it was like if you did created one of his five makeup looks and tagged. Sir John and the right Hashtag. They gave fifty bucks for each like up. You didn't even have to win just for participating. They were giving fifty dollars to this report. Creatives Fund. I that's so cool so cool so I'm really proud of Sir. John Really Proud of support. Creatives I'm just really excited to see you know. Listen it's not going to solve the problem. It's not gonNA put every working makeup every makeup artist back to work but I'm happy to see attention being Put on freelance makeup artists. Because they're not necessarily getting or not necessarily they're not getting the benefits that were seeing with small businesses and I'm not saying small. Businesses are like dining out by any stretch of the imagination. Nobody's living high on the hog right now but certainly not freelancers and Chris McMillan told us on our special episode of these people are independent contractors so funds like this are really going to help them out so you guys should keep a look out on your social media online so basically you don't have to give money but by doing something. A big corporation will give money on your behalf which is

"They probably planning this for a couple of years like all right. Here's our big return to the the premium market. Let's do it. And then the world turns upside down. It's like can't catch a break And we'll see I I'd be really surprised if this was like a big turning point for Motorola right now because yeah the world is so in such a strange state which which leads back to kind of what we're talking about much earlier in the show which is like is the moment the are we. Are we seeing right now? And it's probably too early to tell but are we seeing the moment in time where the thousand hundred dollar phones officially became too much. Like we've been talking about and you're like Oh my God. I can't believe phones are now that expensive but now like we're we're we're seeing a shift in our economy in the world economy that has the potential to be larger than than we've seen in decades Suddenly four hundred dollar phone. That's amazing that will get support five-year. Suddenly that sounds pretty darn good for a lot of people I have to imagine could be just real bad timing for company like Motorola to put out a phone like this. It's almost like if they had if they had doubled down on the category that they've been doing for the last however many years maybe they'd be in a little bit better of a position now not not only not only the category that they've been for several years but the category they've been they've been thriving in for several years. Exactly you know. I think it's funny because Jason. You said you know now after this economic collapse seeing that now a four hundred dollar phone looks good. I've been saying for years and four hundred dollars. Look good even before that I I still think the thousand dollar phone was was kind of the pinnacle of excess. Yup there's one other note that should be mentioned here and I read an article about i. It's killing me that I don't remember who wrote it but It was criticizing the fact that Motorola has promised only one software update for the Motorola Edge. Which is less than ideal for thousand dollar device? Maybe it's okay for four hundred five hundred dollar device but if you're dropping a grand on device you're probably going to be holding that on holding onto that for twenty four months now it. It should also be mentioned in the same breath that I haven't actually found Motorola spoken evidence that says only one software update. This is basically. I don't know if this is based on speculation from what Motorola has done in the past or if it's if Motorola has actually said something about there's only going to be one suffer update. I'd be Kinda surprised if that was the case but I haven't been. I've been digging for that for the last couple of days. And they haven't found it but So take that for what. You will I'll continue to dig and see if I can find something and posted on benefit dot com But in the meantime it is something to keep in mind before you drop. You know your entire stimulus check on one phone heck yes so. I just did a little a little searching you were talking and came up with Jerry feel from the android intelligence blogger computerworld and you know his article. The two words Motorola doesn't want you to read and it's exactly that one one says they're promising one update and this phone is coming out prior to the official release of android eleven. Let's say pretty close to the release of android eleven but officially. This phone is going to be out before entering eleven. So essentially. They're saying you're getting a years worth of update which okay hold the flip phone. That is not okay like that is ridiculous for this price category to promise just that one update maybe if we were at the beginning of the cycle you know what I mean. It was like okay. So you've got this almost full year and then you've got the next full year from that. Update maybe then. I'd be somewhat okay with it. But the fact that we're so close to enter it eleven already and that's purported to be the major update like that's ridiculous that's bad. Ab they'll prove US wrong but Checkout shares article and I'll just go ahead and say that. Jr has not been on the show in a long time. Too Long. You'd be on next week so added back. Yeah true true homecoming totally. I mean longtime friend of the show. So it's great to have back on the show next next week. We could talk to him about this. I flow you got the emails. We've got an email so this one comes from Ron. Not the run that you put another Ron and Ron Road in. I had some thoughts on Google's new debit card. Here's how I think it should work. It should be tied to the Google play APP. Excuse me Google play APP. You should be able to pay APP. Select which car do you want to use? Google debit card would automatically be programmed for that card. You should be able to change it on the fly. That way you wouldn't be able to use Google pay. Excuse me that way you would be able to use Google pay anywhere. There are so many places that don't accept contactless payments. So this would solve that problem for them. There was a card like this on indigo called fuse card. And Ron I think I might remember Ron writing in. I think I might remember that card that you're referring to and I think I remember it being killed after people actually a had backed it on Indigo We also got in a email relate to this from Matt so when I had my old Google Wallet Card. I use it all the time. I was easily able to transfer money to and from my bank or pay pal accounts. It was very convenient car to us and it was really sad when Google decided to kill it. So that did exist some somewhere back in the day in the ether of history but You know I I do like that. These folks were in about this kind of usage for this card. Because I I feel like in terms of a killer card to apple to apple card like this would be the way to really leverage technology and be known as like you know a tech card kind of thing versus. Here's a percent back on your purchases in the play store. Yeah Yeah I mean. Do you guys see people getting excited about the Google card? The way people have got to get excited about the apple. No no no I mean I'll probably sign up for ages out of like. Hey we're go we're family. You know we support each other but not you know it relates to degree to a degree. Wake support you to a degree. I will buy a box of cookies for for your fund raiser but it's not shoveling all of my purchases through you. I'll I'll get it and check it out as well I don't see it going over as well as the apple cart but will certainly find out. Let's take a break. Thank the sponsor and then we'll get into some APP news. This episode of all about Android is brought to you by mint mobile mobile. I've been them for quite a while. Now I definitely got my first big smartphone. Back in the day through a big wireless provider And I one thing that I that was constant. I was with verizon for so many years it was just the high bills it was just part of part of part of owning. The smartphone through verizon was paying a lot for it essentially high up bills And mid mobile does things much different and as a result yeah actually ended up paying a heck of.

Android 11 Developer Preview 3

"So we might not have google to ring in the next version of the android developer preview. But Google's giving it to US anyway probably because we're stuck at home and those of US spare phones why not install the version of developer preview three for android eleven it is here and our friends at Xga have dug in to. All THAT'S CHANGED SERENA. Do a quick little feature walk through some of the changes include redesign recent apps section with larger previews and buttons for screen shot and sharing an undue gesture which brings back a dismissed. App in the recent APP section. So you'll be able to effectively swipe down to bring it back before it's completely out of the recent APP section a toggle to automatically revoked permissions when an APP hasn't been used for a few months so to automatically do that for you in the background. You don't even have to remember it. Notification Shade will hide that static APP active in the background alert. That's kind of annoying and doesn't go away will android eleven A new compact screen shop pop up menu with options to dismiss it. Share the screen shot or idiot. Edit it immediately so instead of that overlay from the notification shade. It'll pop up in the corner. Kind of like how some of the other. Oem's do it in their you I I know that. Lg V. Sixty does this eventually there will be a third option to Girling screen shots. But that's not yet fully implemented though there have there has been some evidence of that An adjustable back gesture. Excuse me the back gesture will be adjustable for its sensitivity for the left and right edges. So you don't have to worry about automatically turning that on. Ethernet tethering support so that you can share Internet connection with a line in new on boarding details for using chat bubbles for the first time so this will effectively work like the facebook chat bubbles that you might know that shop on the desktop kind of just peering over overlaying your Ui. A redesigned caption preference. Green and volume menu will be renamed to sound. So it's a nice new branding air from volume to sound. I guess you could rebrand volume. That's great that's genius. I guess it makes sense though molest volume control more sound controls. Maybe so that's true. There is always cheap back and forth next version. They'll they'll go back to volume can't exactly just like the gestures. There's also another little bit of news that's coming Google is working on Lenny Us live captions during phone calls. So you'll basically be able to use the caption feature while you're on a call with somebody. Currently it's an English only but I can imagine this is going to be super helpful so that you don't have to constantly ask. Did you hear what I said? Did you hear what I said? Now did you read what I said. It was actually. Did you read what I said when you couldn't hear what I said? Well I'M GONNA be very interested in how Google is going to understand. Like really monthly garbled conversation or conversation brought on by just like choppy cellular service because this is a broadband. We're talking about here. This is a phone call when you think about it though. If if somehow Google can make it so it records. A. Records I guess. Air quotes if it records the audio locally from the phone and then sends that like transcribes that to tax and sends that text message or whatever to the receiving phone and then maybe it could display that as a lifetime. I don't know I mean it's it's it might be a way to actually clear up. Calls that are garbled this is. This is me doing like A. Maybe we should inject disinfect into people like live monologue. That's probably as well thought out but anyway I'm just It's just it just occurred to me saying no interstate. What you're saying Adam. I think it'd be great if a I could basically bridge that gap for us so maybe live caption will be. I mean. It'll be very helpful from an accessibility standpoint in the beginning. But maybe further on is they. I kinda learns what how speeches garbled because of settler connections of it can help bridge that gap to make calls clearer and then we won't have an excuse to say we don't want to talk on the phone anymore will have to just you know we have an ai now that can help us have the clearest conversations it you know it actually makes sense Not Not and none of this is to say that this feature is coming to this to android eleven necessarily but I love this thought experiment because you kind of already have this in video right like. Ai Is really very as become adapt at taking a blurry photo. And using his smarts to like sharpen it and of course. It's not bringing back pixels that that were there that aren't there anymore. It's bringing back pixels based on. Its best educated. Guess on what those pixels would be. You can kind of see that happening on audio as well. I wonder if there would be a assisted. "Yeah sure so. One thing I guess. Important to mention is that when we do all of portfolio planning. Although we're given flexibility for each region we meet a lot as a team so You know intimately familiar with all those products and in a lot of times we do. We platform office products as well. But the overarching theme in were there is some discretion. Given as far as what features we bring to each region. Is We do some serious research on consumer behavior and consumer needs for example. The Moto G stylists the stylists a nice addition to it but even more than that a lot of our consumer research we found is that consumers want more storage space consumers want stereo audio and another thing is You know better imaging A better imaging experience. Pardon me and so when we come up with a list of specifications we start looking at to solve the consumer need and only put us in the device. Now what I defined in this region of course this is available to see to other regions as well but each region by region given discretion as far as what are the teachers they feel will best suit consumers in that market and for US in North America. We just really felt strongly that this was the time for the STYLUS and And then we'll see we'll see how the success for the product goes and you know. I'm pretty confident that we hit the right recipe under a set of features on this device. So maybe in the future you might see another regions as well. How do you see the The budget market playing out in the next couple of years. I think we're seeing this. This real duality. Sort of come to fruition where you have phones from companies like Motorola and Nokia in North America and Europe. And you have phones like the you know from companies like real me and read me and in India that are competing for that one hundred two three four hundred dollars space and then on the complete opposite side. We have the thousand plus dollar flagships. There doesn't seem to be a whole lot in in that middle. At least there's a bit of a a bit of a gap at the moment. How do you see that playing out over time? And and you know knowing that the bill of material bill of materials is getting higher on average of for for most smartphones. How do you keep hitting that two fifty to three hundred dollar price point without sacrificing too much in terms of specs? It's good Something that we grapple with every day as a matter of fact but says overall if you look at what's happening with the mid tier obviously with five G. coming out mostly. It's been dominating the higher tier flagship liner premium segment smartphones. It's putting a little bit of our pressure I think in the US `specially this year and continuing to twenty twenty one. It's going to put pressure on on the value. Cheer Line as well and the interesting thing about is at five technology costs more but I could see in the future where we try to really democratize at five G. and tried to make that available to more consumers as well and that's hyper continue to provide value in that mature lineup. Now as far as hitting those price points there are some components. Were over time Just having Diversity of suppliers helps you choose. Lower some costs in the components says so that's one factor we have some leverage to basically to be able to give such a great value for consumers and then it's also looking at at the end of the day. It's really it's trying to sell this consumer pain points and that's what really tries to guide as I mean if you look at our portfolio the motor powered little Stylus Generation Generation. We try to really go strong. That battery life claim For us because we know that's like a number one consumer pain points so definitely we try to innovate By bringing in like again some of those very flagship teachers at a lower price point but also make sure we always have a consumer mind that we're solving their basic needs to basic pain points that you know. Maybe there is not a charger. They pick forgot to charge their phone charger on them to make the phone. One day So we do try to balance the two Definitely over the next three years I think the mid tier obviously has some of the greatest opportunity because five G. I launched a just about a year ago today with the Moto. G sorry the Modal Five G. Mont April third. So and then now. We're starting to see more flagship devices from other. Oem South there. There's a lot of talk about how that's GonNa come down from flagship into the premium tears. And then of course you definitely could see in a in at least a year or two where you are to come into the mid tier in the future line as well so now. It's it's it's managing consumer expectations of. Hey I want bet right. Battery lives with fast data speeds. And what am I gonNA do with that? Data speeds and then really trying to create that great display experience and everything else for the consumer that they have a really enjoyable Experience in their phone another thought process to in how you keep innovating and defining values consumers is continuing continually tried to push up how the device look set perceived quality. You know just because you're buying a phone that maybe is less than three hundred dollars. It doesn't look like it. It looks like a very premium What we call. Cmf which is the cover material finished the device and so we continue to try to push the envelope there as well but there are some innovation south there as well. I mean there's What one of the things? You're seeing. The number of image sensors going into vice as it was one to now. It's three and four For example EMOJIS STYLUS. We have three image sensors. But then there's others will have four but you could actually do a purpose one sensor to also give you depth information so you don't need that and instead the fourth center decided to put a time of flight so again were that lays the time of flight center which provides laser autofocus tried to continuously push value. Went to French intercepts from our competitors by doing innovation where it's really meaningful to the consumer in the Moto g phones. I mean consistently year after year. They tend to be some of the ones that are just the easiest to recommend because it's under three hundred dollars or it's two fifty and it's just a a good basic all around the android phone. That does what you needed to do in its. It maintains that that sweet price point that a lot of people are comfortable with. But in the recent years we've also had the android or the Moto Motorola phones Which was introduced with the just the original Motorola one that kind of had that focus on the android one software and then lately we've seen that shift towards like the Motorola one action and the hyper that of Ro- kind of taken that line of phones in focus more on kind of experimental camera features or camera features. We didn't see initially in Moto G so when I look at it right now. That's how I kinda see it's Motorola one is where you see the camera. Innovations emoji is just the catchall overall solid budget. Phone is that the way that Motorola looks at it or is there a different differentiation before the between those two camps devices? But you're right. In the fact that the model one franchise it's always been built around the theme of like expect the unexpected in. It's also been or opportunity child to maybe demographics that weren't currently buying the Moto G which the buyers tend to be a little bit younger And then we look at Male female and and you know what other groups reach out to with different device offerings and so the model one. You're spot on. Is We tried. It really brings some quick innovations to that. Those devices are very much so cure android with Motorola experiences built on but not meant to hinder in any way that you know. Those devices have been the first to come out with the twenty one nine display aspect ratio or by the pop up cameras or by the the Wide Angle Action Camera That we had in the Motorola when action. So we've We started to introduce them into the. Us We we typically would take some of the offerings globally. We've offered them on retail channels but then with the modal one action. We've actually made sure it supported the banding for all the Tier One. Us carriers to make sure that it was you know the consumers can enjoy it on all of them and so that it's taught as a couple of things and Try to push that innovation down into the Moto g tear now some of that innovation you're GonNa see for example One of the big things on there is like a modal one action. We had where it would You could film it wide angle and you could hold the phone and portrait landscape mode and playback would play back still capture full landscape wide-angle and so we actually decided that. That's a great teacher and we picked at feature while redefining the product for the MEDICI stylus. So the Third Cameron there is not just a wide angle. But it's a wide angle action camera and so that came from that. Motorola one Motorola one line and so the model one line. It really is that expectant expect. It's really pushing the boundaries trigger like what new features coming give and let's test it on the market. See how it does. And maybe that will decide if we then putting into other products which may be on so just the retail but through soul through the carrier lineup And it's been a great device For catching on some of those early innovations and then making our motto cheap portfolio before sollicited inherit some of those features. And then when you think to quickly follow up for that too when you launch the original one Because like that kind of differs from the action the hyper because that was sort of a immune potatoes android foam or the big draw to that was android one with the the guaranteed security patches and software. Updates that google bundles in with that So when you release that was the idea always to kind of shift towards we're GONNA do cameras in a Kinda dropping android one side of things. I some of the US models so the software is more consistent in line with the G. Eight devices Or is that just kind of decision later on down the road where you saw that in innovative at these camera things was more popular trend with most customers as opposed to the android one program that more than likely only people that read websites like android central nor really ingrained in the will android ecosystem are going to really care about. And so it's a good point too is that it's not just defined by hardware also by software as well and so when we when we started that motor one franchise really was starting with a blank canvas and starting in those first early innovations were with android one but later on it turned into a lot of different screen and camera innovations.

How Moto keeps winning: A conversation with Motorola's Doug Michau

"I I. I can only imagine that. It's it's really tough to You know to to plan a product launch and and and do all of the logistics that go into it with without actually having access to people and locations and all that stuff and I'd I'd love to just get a quick sense of you know whatever you can tell us about. You know how this process has been planning a phone launch where you know you can't really have people at at an event together and what have what have you been doing a little bit differently than you normally would have. Yes Oh absolutely It starts of course with having a very rigorous schedule and making sure that we meet in a very regular cadence so Typically obviously you have face to face meetings in an office and so we try to use different platforms At literally we typically use Microsoft teams or skype. And so basically what we've seen is that instead of just the face to face meetings we've met Reno remotely online and we tend to actually meet quite more white More often now just because we do have the time. And there is some of the distractions if you think about it from work from home are gone such as the travel and so it did allow for us to meet a lot more frequently in the nice thing is that everyone schedule is it's more conducive to meeting Online and we actually get full participation. So there's definitely been I would say a lot more Scheduled meetings and both with our global partners as well as her north. America's well so we're talking Today of course about the new G launch Motegi Power Emoji stylus. And I guess you know I'll I'll jump right in to to my first question. Which is you know there. There are a lot of ways to to have a phone standout in the market. Today the Mortgagee Line is always stood out for its combination of price and features and just accessibility in the US in particular. The phones are often compatible with all of the carriers and You just got a lot of value for money. I was really surprised to see that. The sort of flagship motor. Gee this year at least for the. Us was a phone with a stylus and Why why make that decision? It's been Something that I've enjoyed using over the last little bit but What was the thought process that went into making that the the sort of the flagship Motegi of Of of this year's generation sure let me back up. Just one step before answering that question. So as you said put the motivation franchise from Motorola has always been those give those aspirational features at a very affordable price point. And we're always looking at. How do we challenge? How do we push the envelope to really provide in a lock that value for consumers and for us Each generation of products we go through a complete evaluation. We do a lot of consumer research to find out. What are the consumer pain points? How do we deliver more value than the competition and we also obviously work with our retail interior partners in doing so But but one thing with the Stylus as we head evaluate this in the past and looking at what the options were to consumers. Today we saw a very expensive A stylus product out there and again with the Moto G. We're trying to see. How do we bring that in two amid here a value conscious or smart ticshop consumer and so It's been a evaluation why In Two Thousand. Twenty where releasing stylus of the time does seem to be right in the past. You've had productivity and some creativity option to use with a stylus as far as you know you can. It has a very fine point. Do Calligraphy you could do no taking. You can do some video editing. But more so than that. What we're seeing. Is this whole trend with you. Know the social in it's more than just Social posting a photo to say an application like facebook or If you think about an instagram user it's almost impersonal. If you just send someone a photo nowadays you almost have to send a photo you want to annotate it to say you know what the event was or what. You're feeling was at that time and to try to do that with a finger. We thought was a little bit cumbersome and then we also looked at the usability of doing that with a finger while holding it in another hand. What we found is as a screen sizes bigger to it just. It was just a lot. More natural to use the Stylus to annotate a photo and send it over to say like hey look who I met in. La this week known. You put a picture of a movie starring you could write something on that photo You know something like that We find this really interesting especially if you look at even like the growth of snapchat and placing stickers on some of your post all of that that the finer editing is so much easier when you have the stylus to do it and so if you look at the productivity creativity and now you've got the social aspect it just seemed like this was the right time with their be a greater appreciation for having Silas and that mid range smartphone device. The follow up to that. Is You know there's a lot of? I guess there's a bit of education understand what a stylus can do. They understand that. It enables drawing but from a A feature perspective you do have an overlay where you can. You can see what is possible right away after you take out the STYLUS There's a note app you can annotate screen shots and things like that. How do you decide from a software perspective? What to focus on. Obviously you know you mentioned the much more expensive competitor. I mean the the Galaxy note series is a thousand dollars. This is clearly less than half of that. How do you make sure that you're giving people The kinds of software features that they expect from a stylus and keep them wanting to use it. Because I think that's one of the concerns that a lot of people have with a phone like the galaxy note is that it's just a feature that you use every once in a while and then you forget it exists. Yes cigarette when we Did Our stylists. It was more than just putting a stylus into a device. So there's been a lot of consumer research we did including bring in users in in trying out different stylists like we do a blast. Finish on it so that it's easier to hold on hand. We look at the sign of the weight of it to make sure that was very ergonomically comfortable so that the user is going to want to keep on using that Stylus Rather than us at once and say it's something like a Gimmick and then yon that though so we made sure that when you when you take the device each week at this floating window and you can quickly access and up to five. Applications repeated. Low that window with three But it's fully customizable by the user and so obviously you know one of the great things about having a stylus if you think about it Your student classroom going to a seminar. It's just taking notes. I mean that's one of the you know. The most Is Flap location of the Stylus that you can get fined granularity by just quickly writing Without having to use your finger or try to keep what really quick or you might not be able to keep up so what we've done with that with the Moto. No it is that we have this nice little to toward about how to use it. You do a lot of different customization with for example if you're an engineering student put a great background. If you're just taking notes you can put kind of that. The college rule type of paper as a backdrop for that then you could save those Another follow though. Is that like you said earlier. Just annotating photos and and marking them up and putting kind of your feelings thoughts on it so we do allow that as well as even screen snapshot is one of the things in there so you can take a snapshot of your screen and quickly overlay notes on there as well and then just we try and keep providing value to the consumer with Saleh's well so even when your screen is often it's a lock screen you could allow it to basically take notes in that lot screen mode and that plays into our rich heritage in the past features. We had of the Moto display feature so definitely with a Stylus for making sure the we hit the ergonomics of it that we hit the utility of it And then as well as we have little reminders in there as well so if you remove the stylish pop up the floating toolbar the device and if you forget to put the stylus back in it'll set a reminder as well then it also records. Gps location goal as time. The styles is removed. So you don't lose your Stylus as well so you can continue to keeping joining

Forget foldables: TCL shows off the first ‘rollable’ phone concept

"Joining us now is Jason Hiner he is the editorial director at scene at hi Jason Hey good to see good did you say good to see you on the radio of course this is something you've been talking about all of twenty twenty and that's going to keep continuing it is about all of these foldable bendable rollable cell phones yeah yeah you know it's it's really caught captured people's imagination we've had our phones have looked really similar for the past decade they've gotten larger than from his banner they do more things and the cameras are better but but they are pretty similar and so people are open clearly to ideas for how they could involve and what that could look like in folding things is something holding is one of the best human inventions right we we fold our clothes and put them in drawers we fold our papers up for the week put in our pockets we fold books of that they're protected you know we fold glasses down so that they're you know less likely to break when we you know when we are using them so fourteen it is a natural thing for for any kind of technology we've seen some really some hits and some misses the galaxy fold last year from Samsung had its problems the new Motorola razr was really interesting is our looks like our old flip phones and then now the galaxy V. flip also similar well there's a new one this week you know the that was showed off that TCL they have one called the dragon him just like a three way foldable that like three screens it's almost a given little accordion this is looks like a map it looks full old school rap that you would have in your car totally I think the thing to keep in mind with the support of all this I don't let's not get you married to any of these concept that you're seeing now because they may not be the most practical I've carried around is the flip for a couple weeks now and there's some things I like about it is and things I don't there's some things that make me think I probably wouldn't use it in place of like one of today's just black slabs of real then it might not be too practical I mean foldable glass this is all sounds like a negative article yeah that was so durability is one of the big concerns I mean although there is a double durability arguments he made for like the one that folds on itself like the the flip or you know if you drop that it's more protected than you know if you're dropping it in the snow hits the screen right we've all seen the people that walk around with broken screens because they've dropped their phone so you know there there could be some there will be I'm sure some uses to this weather all phones are gonna look like this or whether we're still gonna try to find you know where the real innovation is is yet to be seen and I think we should think about it potentially for other kinds of devices to Sir you know game consulate future wearable devices of the future you know potentially making smartwatches better and and less like little tiny smartphones so there's a lot of uses for it and we're still just waiting to see how how different innovators take this in is the new direction so this is a triple folding phone what are they going to aim for next like a quadruple the you know five full what's the goal here yeah the goal is to get to you know we know that people like larger screens it's a larger screen phones are now sort of some of the most popular phones that are out there what we're trying to get you is a larger screen but not something that takes up a lot of space there are some other prototypes you're gonna see this year where folds that flight outlook just look like a normal phone today but the screen sort of slides into to you know kind of thing so the end game is to get you bigger screen because you're you can type easier on them you can watch videos better you can do all kinds of things more productively but if the end of the day when you're ready to just put it in your pocket or your bag then you know you want it to slide down to the smallest possible that's really that that is the end game with the thing okay doesn't really quick what's your verdict is it still too early on to buy these let the market kind of figure out to how to improve them and then by yes I would not recommend anyone buy these regular phone yet they're they're fun they are experimental if you love living in the future and you want a taste of it you know but don't make it your primary device that thank you for being honest with us editorial director at the net Jason Hiner thanks for

Z Flip's 'Ultra Thin Glass' display

"The Galaxy. Flip a glass phone. Yes or no yes but not the part you touch. Why and what how is it has Samsung calls it? Ultra thin glass and they've trademarked it and they call. I think they actually call it. Samsung Ultra thin glass but it is made by a third party. Company in eight is actually very very thin flexible glass. But it is so thin and so- dainty delicate that you have to cover it with a polymer sheet. It's the exact same polymer sheet that they use on the fold so the part. You're touching with your finger isn't glass after all. It's glass underneath that right. Okay so the question here is why would Samsung cover a glass screen? Which would extensively be more resistant to scratches than plastic? Why would they cover it with a what amounts to a screen protector? Yup well got everybody's gotta remember to. This is all speculation because Samsung is not gonNA go out on and say why they did this. They're going to tell you that it's still really great and a lot of people I've talked to that are using the phone. Now agree that it. It does somehow feel better than the fold That may be the construction or whatever but the glass itself is so thin that if you dang it it's GonNa literally just shatter and fall out and it's GonNa be a mess that nobody would want to deal with. There's just no way you can release a product that could even potentially dangerous right so it's Samsung is hedging. Here right. Yeah they're saying this glasses thirty microns in diameter which is basically. It's it's a thinner than a human hair right For for those of you who still have human hair and it's. It's likely not to be scratched as badly when you run your finger or you know You know put it in a in a pocket or something with keys or your clothes. That's not actually the concern here but like say you can't really scratch it as easily as a as a plastic screen but it's easily punctured because it is just literally so thin. Yup So let's install a plastic protector over it. Let's then shield the edges of that screen protector with a massive basil so that no dust can get under it the way that it did initially on the galaxy s or the galaxy fold and people won't mistake it for a screen protector you can remove and then let's market the phone as covered with glass and they're not say that there is a plastic screen protector on it until somebody tears and down and finds it which they had to know that somebody was instantly gonna find out it was plastic. That's the part that puzzles me. As did they really think they were? GonNa get away with you. Know calling in glass phone I I mean here's the thing right. What other option did they have none? That's I don't know I can't blame them for what they did They they used glass. Maybe just so they could say they used glass. Or maybe they WANNA see how this works as a trial for their next idea but there really is no way they could release that phone without the plastic on on the top right and then if you decide to you can go to a break fix store and get a another screw protector professionally. Installed on top of the existing one rush. I think is pretty hilarious. So then you'd have a glass screen under who plastic screen protectors. Yeah obscure the the thing that I find really funny about it. Is that aside from scratch protection? Glass is clear. I mean the reason we use glass on phones is because of its its clarity and the fact that it passes electrical signal through really well. It's it's nice and conductive it's just. It's a perfect material for phones other than the fact that it can shatter because really I don't think scratches are a problem on current day phones right like you could scratch phones. You can gouge them but not in the way that you can. Scratch her gadget. Plastic screen right. Everybody listening if you could look at your phone in the right light right now. It's got a lot of super to really tiny scratches in it but nothing that you can even see. It's not like things used to be. So they've got glass down pretty good. You know the the companies that make it big names like corning and And it it feels good. Let's let's not forget that part it. It feels good to use glass. If you've got a touchscreen et unit your car that has a a plastic covered crappy display touch display on it. You know you hate that thing but your phone feels good. Because it's capacity of glass display exactly and by now we just take it for granted. We don't think about it you. We we recommend screen protectors for people who tend to drop their phones right and it's not necessarily because of scratches it's because you know the the trade off that corning has to make every time it designs a new gorilla. Glass is do we emphasize scratch resistance or do we emphasize drop protection and shatter resistance absolutely. It's really hard to balance those things and right now with gorilla glass six. I think we're we're we're at the emphasis on drop protection over scratch resistance yea. I'm sure that it's still a lot more scratch resistant than phones of ten years ago. But I do know enough from just talking to people at corning that it is actually a set of balance beams the harder you make it to scratch the more brittle it is and it will easy more easily break. So that's that's what they just like. You said they have to balance that out because a the thing I guess it's a chemical treatment they do. It's it's proprietary smart on them but You know whatever they do to make it more scratch resistant also makes it more brittle so it's tough and again. This is not Samsung's fault. I applaud Samsung for going so confidently into its second generation. A foldable phones right. There's no other company that is using ultra thin glass right now not Ganz. The the Motorola Razor is a shining example of kind of relying on An overly complicated design but not focusing on the fundamentals to kind of ruin the experience. And you know. I'm not saying that as somebody who spent a lot of time with the phone but the people that have reviewed the Motorola Razor. I trust and most of them say that. It's just not a good experience from the creaky hinge to the plastic display to you. Know the just the the design that they had to design around the fact that it was foldable. And they you know they maybe didn't do as good a job as they could just to keep it thin and and and relatively light. Yep I agree with you. The people I've talked to the one great thing about it is the the wow factor. Everybody wants to look at it but day to day used. It's just not a great phone

Motorola Razr may lack in durability

"The thing with the Motorola razr is there's a tester from the site input who had his device peeling apart at the place where it folds getting a giant air bubble in the middle I hate to say this isn't a surprise because in C. net when we did our test with it the biggest thing we're worried about is this kind of air bubble this air gap that you see when you fall the phone so unfortunately that's turned out to be a problem Simpson just released a new folding phones with a bold claim that has revolutionary flexible glass with the galaxy flip from Sam song there's a tinkerer called Zach Nelson from Jerry rig everything a YouTube channel that he put this season durability tests and he found that even though this one has supposedly a foldable glass screen he was able to use his fingernail to leave scratches on the phone the screen is in no way scratch resistant whatsoever thou not great and one of the things that he brought out was that glass is used because of its durability and in this case he sort of is questioning whether it really is glass or maybe if it's a polymer between you know kinda half plastic

Galaxy Z Flip Display Is Quite Easy To Scratch, Durability Test Reveals

"Tests of Samsung's Galaxy Z. Flip and it's much touted. Ultra thin glass display. Show that the durability of the Z. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip: The Flip Phone Is Back and It's Not a Total Flop

"CBS news on their Ruben chanting was seen at senior managing editor Dan Ackerman so I understand you're one of the lucky ones and you had the opportunity to play with the Samsung galaxy siii flat so how do you feel about it from getting to play with it for a little while I think it's frankly the most advanced out of all of them the big difference is the screen that flexes when you close the phone it actually made of a kind of flexible glass instead of plastic and that really gives the more upscale feel it's probably more durable some of the other ones like the regional Sampson galaxy fold in the Motorola razr which is kind of a a new take on that for back regional flip phone razr but with a flexible screen vamp plastic screens they feel little creaky when you use them at least using this new one for about an hour or so I I felt more confident in it there was a better engineer now it's also very high end very expensive product but it's certainly an interesting way to get people more excited again about getting a new phone if it looks and feels and acts differently it liberally folds in half and can fit a human size pocket which is and we haven't had in awhile and when people are upgrading their phones every you know two to three to four years instead of every one to two years these phone companies are so invested in finding anything to get you excited about buying the phone again does it do everything a normal phone does these folding phones the functionality is largely the same as standard phones a surf the web to make calls I have ABS on them these all run just standard android the only things they do that are really really different our our physical they fold in half you have a smaller footprint when you haven't filled it up and they have some some apps behave differently in kind of a half folded mode like it'll put your photos on the top half of the screens and controls in the bottom half the screen when you haven't folded almost like it's little tiny laptop there are plenty of reasons for slow internet but how can we

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip sold out online in a single day in US

"Get to go pick up a galaxy flip in a matter of hours which is Which is pretty amazing Unfortunately there's a caveat on it that It's being picked up from Samsung and then return at the Samsung within a day. Which is Which is fun? I guess so. That stipulation seemed weird when they said it to us back in San Francisco and then last night I was up late doing some some work and I noticed that everybody around midnight was tried to buy the Z. Flip and couldn't because there is no stock and best buy sold out within minutes. Apparently some stores only had like five or ten units and Samsung Dot COM Didn't have many units either. Sold OUT PRETTY QUICKLY. So my guess is just that they're asking for it back because they really just don't have that many units to sell people. Yeah and the implication. There isn't that they're going to package these up and sell them of course just to be clear but You know they have lots of other people and marketing needs etc. That actually need these devices. And I've a feeling that when Samsung hands out all of these devices to journalists that they themselves as marketing and PR people will not have devices leftover for you know their own uses either so I from that perspective I kind of get it and I I do understand that There's some tight tight stock out there. I think I would be shocked if they made more than you know. What fifty thousand one hundred thousand of these things for the entire world right now? Yeah I think they're hedging quite a bit given that the galaxy fold Failed miserably before it went on sale. So they're probably like listen. Let's make a very small number of these. Wait until our early adopters. Come back to us with impressions and see if we should ramp up production now just like seeing an off the Bat. This does not look like it will be anywhere close in fact. It looks like it's going to be the opposite to what happened with the original galaxy fold and That is A. That's a great thing. The first impressions here have been universally positive especially when compared to the Motorola Razor which was released last Friday rough timing for Motorola it just has been like and We have our review up on the site now. We are one of the first to review it and slowly trickling in has been the verge wired. Droid life like all of the all of the sites that you'd expect to review a brand new foldable phone have just like excoriated this product like. It's it's not even it's kind of embarrassing actually for Motorola because the first impressions I have it. Were were quite positive. But there was always this lingering feeling in the back of my mind like. I know that once I get over. The wow factor of the fact that this thing folds and there's a teardrop fold that prevents a crease and all that and there's this nostalgia factor. It's still going to be a pretty mediocre. Motorola phone underneath at all. Yeah and I don't think that I mean as far as I remember. You weren't alone in your initial take being very positive but I think that as people had more time to think about it and obviously review it they found out that yeah all of these things that we inherently knew about it just kind be immediately mediocre. Motorola phone underneath came you know came to roost when you actually started using it and the camera was horrible and the processor obviously wasn't up to speed to to the price you're paying here which is fifteen hundred dollars and that really ingenious hinge that. I and everybody else I think praised it because for because it slid the screen you know did a lot of interesting things to prevent creases actually meant that the screen itself was very unstable. I guess you'd say it was bumpy. It was basically like a an eighty nine year. Old Man's face is is what you can say like. I was like if you look at a if you look at a phone normally right. You don't really see any Breaks in it unless it's physically broken but on the razor now that we've kind of had some time to look at it closely because the layer is plastic and because the unlike the folds the the hinge forces the screen physically move every time it opens and closes. The layer is physically changing places whenever you ask moving anchored at the top and then slides on the bottom. Like in and out of the Chin is the way it works. It reminds me a little bit. Like in retrospect of the blackberry storm like we were talking last week about the end of blackberry mobile. The but I mean just just remember like the blackberry storm was not a capacity. Give touch device in the same way like an iphone or or the galaxy. The early you know android phones were like g one and stuff like these were. This was a a phone that was basically you press down and it it It had four areas. That were that were that that. We're taking Pressure input rather than it being like a capacitor. Touch screen would not at all the same thing. But I'm just saying like it feels a little bit like Motorola was hiding this fact in plain sight and it knew that wants. The phone was released. People had a bit more time to scrutinize the design. This would eventually come out and it's interesting that the phone was originally supposed to come out in January and they would have had a way longer lead time against the sea flip than the eight days seven days eight days that they had eventually. It's that was so much more damaging to the razors potential sales numbers because not only with the Z. Flip announced and then release three days later but it is one hundred and twenty dollars cheaper and it is objectively better in almost every way. Yeah I think that was the most stark thing to take away from using the Z. Flip at you know. Just a few days after using the the razor and I wasn't at the original razor launch events so my only take was Just recently and contrasting the two. You just see that you just see how far ahead. Samsung is in just hardware fundamentals. I think you would say in terms of just the build quality of the entire thing is just the same bill quality as Galaxy S. ten but it just folds in half and just even before we get to the screen which is probably you know which is really the nail in the coffin for the the razor compared to the Z flip. Just the fact that there is proper internal specs snapdragon fifty five plus and eight Gigs Aram to fifty six storage like cameras. That actually work properly. You know just like all of the basics around the phone and it still cheaper than the razor is pretty crazy because you could see all the compromises. The Motorola had to make a new fully expected it. Because look the you know. It's the first phone released to do this. Clam Shell folding. Form factor versus this larger tablet. Type thing Like the Galaxy Fold. And so you were willing to give it a break on some of those things and then. Samsung comes out and he's like no really. You shouldn't have to give up on all of those things you can just have like a normal basically last year's flagship phone and that it also folds in half so what's interesting. Is the flip uses foldable glass. And it's the first phone to use that but we we know that it's not from corning. Corning has been teasing the fact that it's been developing a foldable glass substrate for many many years but it has not released commercially and we were thinking maybe. Samsung just slid this under the radar and used corning's glass for the first time but no in fact. Samsung invested in a company. A small company from China. That was making foldable. Glass prototypes and eventually was able to make it consistently enough in of high enough quality that they bought a majority share in the company and then started using it for the flip. And it's it's interesting because we obviously it's out today it's February fourteen so we don't know how it will hold up over the long term. It's just a fact. Samsung claims that this thing can do two hundred thousand opens and closes And the fact that you don't have to worry about like digging your nail into it and permanently damaging the screen is just a massive massive leap forward and something that obviously in a year or two. We're going to have taken for granted but this is this is major. It stands in direct contrast to the razor. And this is I. Think a very exciting product.

Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip is now available, but the Galaxy S20 may still be your best bet

"So there's Z. Flip Samsung announced in a commercial. It's obviously what they want the attention around build buzz. That's not really a a useful phone for most people to buy. We don't think right S. Twenty is like the flagship phone. Yes defense speaking of most people. Most people figured that out looking at like the audience attention to better site which phones people actually wanted to read about. It was it was the last one. And that's why we made you wait thirty minutes before we talk. house there. There are so many as twenty S. Helped me understand what's going on here? So there are three of them and last year. Samsung did the s ten e which was a lower end and that they didn't like and so. Now they're doing ultra high-end one so there is a regular twenty there's the s twenty plus and then there is the s twenty ultra which is just huge. Yeah but ironically. I was like it's huge. It's heavy and It was pointed out. It's actually like a tiny lighter than a Iphone Pro Max. Alert Five G. Whatever the big one is five g. At and T. so speaking of five g. These are the very first mainstream phones that are just five G. by default they've got the qualcomm eight sixty five processor which doesn't come with the Modem but the only one that works with it as Qualcomm Modem of course and that modem is five gene so they all support five G. by default which means that people are just going to start getting five g phones whether they really like are looking for that or not because they're just GonNa get it when they buy their twenty phones. The thing that's interesting about these three models is Samsung. Isn't doing like a really clear? Like oh they're all the same. They're just different sizes. There are like weird differences from the s twenty s twenty plus and from the talk plus to the twentieth so for example the s twenty only has mid band five G. whereas the plus and the ultra support millimeter wave who has been five in the US. That's G mobile eighteen thousand. Yeah so it's it's basically not price so the verizon phone. Yeah well I think Verizon's actually getting this thing later than the other carriers to which is fascinating the other main difference besides screen size between these. Phones is the camera stuff and I don't know if you want to put off talking about the cameras because there's so much to get into or if you want to do it right now because there's other stuff were here for the big thing that Samsung is doing. They are switching to high megapixel sensors so normally and traditionally up until the year two ago and even like like last year. If you saw a phone with like sixty four megapixel or higher censor. You knew that like that phone was to be bad. Just did right. Because like they don't they. They can't make a good camera. They'll throw more mega pixels. I hope you don't notice. Hope you're snowed by the big pretty number and you buy it. But the twenty has the sixty four forty eight and one hundred eight megapixel camera and some of these phones and that's fascinating Zooms the the regular twenty as the forty eight? The middle one has a sixty four in the top as the one. Oh Yeah so the the thing is you put me on the spot here figuring out which one has which one is actually like requires me to look at the chart because they each have the each have their own each have three cameras wide telephoto in an ultra wide The bigger ones have time of flight cameras and the Matrix of which one gets. Which Mega pixels? It's really complicated. So for example the twenty has the sixty four megapixel on the telephoto so does the twenty plus but on the twenty ultra. It's got forty eight megapixel the telepho- and one hundred eight on the standard wide Which is it all just gets like Blah right yeah the key takeaway here is I think. Samsung wants to take business away from Sony. When it comes to camera sensors. They're tired Sony. Everyone uses Sony sensors. And so they're betting on this new sixty four one hundred eight megapixel sensor that they've made that is able to do particular kind of pixel binning that's supposedly solves the problem of low light photography on high megapixel sensors so the the micron size like the hundred eight megapixel sensor for example is point eight which is real bad but it's a slightly larger sensor and by default it bins nine of the pixels together into one single pixel. Does it right there on the sensor? So there's no software involved and then it lays out the RGB pixels on that sensor in you know in that for that binning such that when it bins by default it looks a little bit more like a traditional pixel array so that it is able to have fewer fewer problems with you know color aberrations on that been photo and then if there's enough light or the like we don't need to win this is great we can get all the detail we want. It can switch over to one hundred eight Megapixel if you WanNa

"Samsung's doesn't have a monopoly of five G.. Radio's no finds out. They're going to have a flagship the they just put out that. I watched the video. You Know Marcus Brownlee has is the TAB use I like. His videos did a review of that the ultra version so cool ridiculous eighteen hundred dollars. But my God's mad that's under an eight megapixel cameras now. He's nutty. What does that even read a hundred times? Obstacles to 'em writes in and says with the announcement that Microsoft Samsung are quote just beginning their partner their gaming partnership. Where do you think we could end up in the next few years X.? Cloud being installed on every new Samsung phone in TV would would be a huge moves for excessive millions of new potential customers according to the Tister Status Santa Statistics hitter. I've never heard of that The same thing held almost nineteen percent global market share in the smartphone market in q four. That's impressive when you consider how fragmented the ANDROID world is. There's so many there's so many options but yeah I mean I have a galaxy S. ten and I feel like I'm presuming. Samsung is the biggest player in Agile. Yeah that's that that would be my assumption check on that I mean. Maybe it's maybe it's wall way or something you know the US in the US. At least I would Samsung's gotta be that'd be my assumption but maybe there are like there might be some other being fracture and you're wrong because he was like look into it for us like cheaper prices or something and according attack. Samsung is the largest manufacturer with over twenty percent of the market this xbox in the hands of more potential players than playstation now access on Sony smartphones phones and televisions could is this the beginning of strategic mismatch for playstation. What other elements of this partnership? Do you think are possible. And do we think that this is a move for for Microsoft a hedge against stadia integration into into Google Pixel devices and Android more broadly. Thanks and have a great Wednesday. I mean I think it would. It would be to Samsung's advantage advantage to say. Hey and Samsung. Phones are the only place to GATT Microsoft cloud or at least the premium version of the experience. Yes if you have. I'm an xbox game. I'm an iphone Guy and I'm an xbox consoles. I slightly prefer the xbox and if Samsung would just say hey. We're the only company with the only phone that you can get premium excellent experience. I mean I wouldn't. I wouldn't do it. I would never have an android phone but I I would. I would like maybe I'll be at least on the fence about it. That would be. I think the idea of every Samsung device coming preinstalled with xbox thanks cloud right. I think that'd be a huge win and even in a month question here. He's referencing competition against playstation playstation. Now I think they're like as far as competition in this base base. I think playstation now is barely a factor. I think could be a factor in the future if he's not continue continues to improve and continues to android phone manufacturers Samsung the way behind why behind arms made their names. I don't know Xiaomi all PO and companies did you really think about because it because this is outside of the. US can you do it just by the US. Wild Wide World Wide Ham logic. I've never even heard of L. G.. Motorola Rollo Sony's down there. I mean Samsung is like far too. Why that same forty three point six percent of the android space and that does make sense it would be like ninety percent of the once you factor in the IPHONE? iphones a good chunk of them. Okay yeah totally. Three percent of the android market equals like ninety percent of the phone market overall role. Right yeah and so with that idea in mind just running away with it makes complete sense. What this partnership is out here? Did for exclusively though because even yeah like even though Samsung is the number one player ninety percent of the overall market is not enough. Right you want to be an old. Of course yeah. I don't think like I don't think this article Michael Mentions exclusivity anywhere I didn't I didn't get a hint of any anything pointing toward the idea that they're going to be exclusive but the idea that they could have a deal where you are getting Samsung devices like Samsung. TV's amount at Biltrite as the TV. That's yeah that's compelling right there and they they won't be exclusive but they can say this is with us. If you have a Samsung device this will offer the best experience. Yeah I think that I think that messaging for them go a long way and I think that is what makes this partnership make complete sense But yeah as far as like them communing with. Let's see. Is this beginning. Is this the beginning of strategic mismatch for playstation. I think it's already been kind of a strategic mismatch when the GECKO playstation. Now didn't necessarily have. What does that mean a strategic mismatch for playstation? I think I think we aim on is getting at. Is the idea that this would but then when you look at the numbers compared to say Sony phones and Sony. TV's like Samsung Wars. Those numbers is I think. That's why am I getting that but I think that's uh I think that's a problem. Because he is the thing so stadia has a natural partner with android and more specifically Pixel Pixel phones right. Yes you understand why. That's all kind of under one roof. Yeah Microsoft doesn't have any presence in the phone mark any anymore anymore. They tried and they failed now. They're just out said where we will support android now. So it makes sense for them to Partner with the number one player in the Android Loyd market Sony has a natural partner in its consumer electronics division. But like they but that's small time. Yeah that's who has a Sony phone. WHO has a Sony? TV Not that many people. Yeah that's the thing they need to. They might need to find Nick's donal partner and that's why I think like this is less than competition with Sony. Lean more in competition with stadia. If anything right like stadium having like Google Google Pixel being a thing not nearly as big of a thing as Samsung with with android right and Google stadia kind of having a certain amount of mindshare with the streaming space. I think that's where the competition is at. Even though it seems things warm more by the day stadium kind of eating their lunch right. They're kind of tripping over their own their own feet with each passing passing kind of decision in new story. We see about stadia not working or making bad decisions or doing. Ama's that don't tend to work out well for them like project. X Cloud seems to be doing all the right things. And you know there's even another news story coming up about another streaming beaming service that you know there this this space currently is kind of messy and it's kind of fun to watch because we're seeing people kinda climb over each other and try try to become at that number one spot Whether it is in like mindshare or like even in the partnerships and actually getting the absolute on whatever devices you have whether you like it or not so far. It seems like X. Cloud and I'd say probably INVIDIA G. Force are kind of Invidia G. for surprisingly are kind of like the two front runners for what services are going to end up successful in this thing but even then like I could see I could see a feature where like nobody. Nobody comes out on top because this str- streetlight video game streaming is still hasn't become as many thing yet. You know what I mean. You know. It's it's going to be enough. Another iteration of the platform was you know. There's no one clear I mean. Seventy is kind of a clear winner right now but Mike still really in the game. Nintendo's obviously a very Bigger deal than the newsletter three-horse three very healthy horses in that in that race. Maybe maybe Sony need to give Tim Cook a call. Do an exclusive collusive Team Up. Hey the best way to get the best way to get an exclusive playstation experience playstation streaming is on the iphone really think about it apple and Microsoft all rivals. They can't work together. I don't take Samsung and apple arrivals. They can't work together. Sony Oni and apple though they don't have any particular beef. Maybe they team up for this. I'm not crazy. There are Sony phones right. Yes see they run android. Yes the Sony. Only have a tiny daily advertiser are some of the most beautiful phones. Go from every time I see the new Soni you need the experience I still have. Those new ones are those. The industrial design on Sunday finds gorgeous. Yeah they they have always run like shit. Yeah that's the problem. Suli run shit that being said the latest one that came out which I can't remember the model number now but like that phone Enforce it doesn't work for sprint. Otherwise they'd be the phone I used. It's the prettiest screen of ever seen on a phone gorgeous. Yeah they're still plugging away but not the playoffs does not work with sprint. So that's the point. They they need they need to either. Just put it out there equally for. Everyone say he will support all devices or they need or they need a partner. Samsung aired a Galaxy Z Flip commercial during the Oscars before it’s even announced

"All right let's talk a little bit about that Samsung Ad. Yeah I how did the Oscars don't always make it in the show. But the did this year Samsung aired a commercial during the Oscars showing a previously unannounced foldable device which we all soon we'll be called L. D. Galaxy Z.. Flip shown in purple and also in black. The phone uses a clam shell form factor but doesn't appear to fold completely flat. It was shown sitting on a table at two ninety degree angle and with a small full color display on the front showing caller. Id with the slider to accept calls while folded if you're paying attention and notice at the bottom bottom of the screen stated you may not small crease in the center of the main screen which is a natural characteristic of the screen. The ad promised more details at Samsung unpacked event February eleventh. which is tomorrow I watched this? And the first thing I thought was oh an ample ad in the Oscars and then the phone started folding and I thought wait is is this razor and then I realized that that didn't look like the Motorola razor and I waited to discover. It was a Samsung ad at the very end which is interesting Charlotte because this is Samsung having an ad for a mainstream audience a day before it actually announces the details of a product. So that's very interesting. I guess this is kind of an equipment of doing a super bowl ad isn't it. It's kind of big big lied as big. But yeah cl- it's along the same lines right as we said it was a relatively small audience for Oscars. But it's a lot of people watching something alive but I. I was amazed. It looked like a mirror. I in my handbag like compact. Yeah exactly exactly. I have to get the phone. We'll find thing like the early two thousands especially when it comes with like the the fine print of like you know it almost like. It's like a prescription medication ad where it's like side effects may include right death to your doctor. Side effects may include a crease green. That means it's Oh you know. And they've and they've all kinds of loans companies have been trying to push these products. The kind of we know there's been a number of issues though creating these foldable foldable phones. I just calling advantage what problem. They're trying to sell it by creating these products. Yeah I'm still hung up on the idea that you I'm amy this this this is why maybe they know. People aren't clear on what a foldable should do. So seeing it in action ahead of the announcement might it make people more excited for the announcement that could be the thinking or it may be just that Samsung realizes we none of us can actually keep all of these details from leaking taking anymore so we might as well lead into it. And just put an ad out there. I have to say though if I'm watching the Oscars as an average user not a DNS host or even a listener. Probably I'm probably like oh I'm going to the apple store tomorrow and get that full foldable phoned because it really looked like an apple ad and nobody understands galaxy unpacked impact what that is like if if anything they might know it was Samsung. Did it but it could be very confusing for people like it very apple. It's it's funny though. There was apple commercial. That was about like nightmare and it was a smashing pumpkins song and I felt the same way I was like this. Has it has to be an apple ad but are they going to be another company like we're getting to the point now where we're like. ooh This is a well. Well done ad. WHO IS IT ADOBE AD? It was very clearly adobe from the beginning so I commend them for that.

"How great is it to actually hang up on someone again? I mean it's pretty great so basically this whole idea with the Motorola Razor is that you've got this very very small screen on the outside. It's a flip. Phone design with a foldable screens was really updated for twenty. Nine thousand nine hundred and beyond this is just the beginning and you use it when his open. I've been that's how you get to most of the APPS that you're gonNA use and then you close it and just like the flip phones from two thousand four. When the reason I came out that sort of ends ends most of everything doing so you can end a call by flipping it closed like you said you can and most apps some apps you can actually keep using when the phone is closed which can be really useful? Oh like a phone call for example But essentially this is this updated design that gives people compact device that they may have missed. This phones are getting getting larger and larger and larger. So it's something that you can pocket but you're not sacrificing all of this green space. That is the promise of affordable phone have you purposely made like angry phone calls to people so that you could slam the phone on them. That is definitely a big part of my upcoming testing where we get the review like how often kate a section totally just like how hard. Yeah I can slam it shut I can. I can send you a list of people to call them for three. So I mean you you had a hands on with it I think. I think you've spent the longest time with it out of the anyone that I know Motorola's headquarters in Chicago and basically spent an entire day with this device which was really great. I mean and I couldn't test absolutely everything that's going to wait for the Review Unit but it was great to just go in there and peer at all the little nooks and crannies and kind of see like what the promises are are and and also what some of the concerns might be when this phone comes out how usable was it actually like when it was folded like one incident clam shell mode they have that little screen on the front right. Is there anything you you do. Yeah you can't you can't do as much as the outside of the full screen and that's because on the razor. The screen is minuscule two point seven inches. So there's no keyboard there you're not typing coming but it is touch sensitive Voice input to and think of it as more like shortcuts so for example if any kind of alert notification email text message. Acid comes in you can interact with it You can press a button and then make a voice response or use Google Smart Reply Canned responses which actually is pretty useful especially something like okay or I'll call you back later then you can also simply open up device if you've selected an email message such for example you can open up. The device opens up that e mail. Message you can type your reply. Snap it closed against ticket in your pocket and go on your way and now you publish an article this morning about six burning earning questions that we still have about the phone I mean what are they. Yeah so we do know when the phones going on sale in the US that would be January ninth. That was one burning question when they I announced it but really I think the two most important ones that it comes down to for me are screened durability and also battery life so the issue with the screen is that this. There's a plastic alleged That's very similar technology to what Samsung News. But Motorola saying that their screen is actually more durable. Because they've got this harder plastic coating but questions that we're going to have about any foldable phone will be what is the wear and tear like when you open enclose it however many thousands hundreds of thousands of times in the lifetime of the device and then also. How durable is it going to be two things like water? This one is apparently splash proof but also you know if your ring grazes it if your keys accidentally graze it if if that screen gene which is delicate because it's not protected by glass comes into contact with anything else So we'll go through some testing Motorola's pretty confident but you never know in fifteen. Fifteen hundred dollars is just too much to spend on device that so fragile In terms of battery life is a very small battery capacity on this device. The screen in is in a way smaller because of the dimensions. It's very tall and narrow so at six point two inches corner to corner but it's also pretty narrow device and the battery split into the two parts which usually isn't as efficient. So I it's really gonNA come down to is GonNa last all day that Motorola promises or is going to be all day with light years. Yeah I do they give any technicalities. It's all day only if you use it in the clam shell mode or something. You wouldn't because it's really meant to be used full screen but it's more like what do people do with a phone so if you're navigating if you're streaming all of that is going to hit in to your battery reserves at a much faster rate than if you're using the device much more passively I feel like not much attention has been paid to. You know the usual things that happened when we do a phone reviews like. How's the camera and stuff like it? Because it's foldable everybody so like did you like the a tip if this was just a normal phone. That wasn't foldable. Like how does this stack. I'm really glad that you asked that question. Because Camera I think is one area of potential weakness Even more than the screen just because people I think generally understand that foldable screens are different and they have to play by different rules but everybody wants the same things out of the camera and there's just one one main camera here. That's sixteen mega pixels. So you're GONNA use that to take pictures of everything and also yourself fees. There is a camera on the inside. That's five megapixel but that's really really what you're going to be using to kick off video calls a nuclear device in continue your video call using the main camera but you lacked the telephoto and you lack. The Wide Angle. Lenses is that the galaxy fold hasn't been galaxy full six cameras right. This essentially has one main camera that you're gonNA use so I think that when you're talking about paying fifteen hundred dollars per device is a premium Siemian phone. How many cameras do expect on a premium phone right? I don't use the other cameras nearly as much but I liked that. They're there and I do use them so All of that. I think nudges. The Motorola radios are more in the direction of novelty or niche or secondary device device or device for your library collection or people who just like who care more about this iconic and like new form factor than they do about photography orphee most foldable. Have Been Kinda you know going. The route of. Let's take avary foldable site. We lease the two out of the three of them have taken the approach of. Let's make something normal size bigger hager right as this one is. Let's make something small like normal size smaller. Which one do you think makes a lot more sense for for this kind of market? Yeah I think it depends ends who the buyer is. There are a lot of people who are really entranced with this device because they miss having something that they can carry around. It's all about the screen. People don't don't necessarily want bigger phones because they want to hold a really big phone they want it because of all of the benefits that a large screen affords so here. We've got this like very alluring alluring promise of having the best of both worlds and I think it's just really going to depend. I mean with something like the Galaxy. Fold or the wild way main ex there. It's let's give you even more screen. So that's it's more of a like it's hamlet or a laptop replacement and it is really good for video. I have to admit like the larger. The screen is more immersed you are and what you're doing But it's a lot less practical to carry around like on that. No do you think that this phone. What would deliver or as a foldable or does it feel a little bit more gimmicky like other foldable phones? I mean I'm I'm not GONNA Sandy names. There's only three out there. It rhymes with Pam Pong Pal OCCC. Poll well yeah I mean what. What are your thoughts on on the razor fall as a foldable? Yeah I think the foldable I think the concept is really great and it is different in that something that a lot of people are Guangming onto but I think what will make or break foldable phones including including this one. It doesn't matter how great it looks if there are fatal flaws with that screen then it's automatically a no-go it's back to the drawing board. I think where we are with foldable funds. Right now the industry is still trying to figure out. Is this going to be the future or is this kind of like a fun side project that we learn from Are we going to move to postpone world at some point right. I think there's a lot of value in this kind of concept and it's just even from like a design and scientific approach. It's amazing the fact that we can even get to this point to experiment with it but I think that right now in the early days at least for the next year or two this is still going to be experimental to see what we can do if we can push it further and how people really respond. If it's just academic and at the end nobody cares. Nobody buys these phones or shows any like real interest in it even as the price comes down the materials get stronger than we'll have our answer when they when they first Announced the galaxy fold. I remember on our show I had mentioned like I would much much prefer following that folds into a smaller one because I think I'm in that camp where I like smaller devices Now that that's done My next call out is just GONNA be the slap bracelet bracelet phone where you have a normal phone just slap it on your isn't it. Just fits their turn with mart. Watch so when that happens please call please reference back to this clip tip as it has happened. It was actually Motorola's parent company Lenovo. Several years ago had something called the C.. Plus and it was not a slap. You can't go that with it but But it was that shape and you kind of bend it around your wrist. And that's definitely a form factor that they think that these companies are working on was looking into something like that there have been a few prototypes and concept devices. Of course they're all terrible at this point they're completely awful but it's playing around with idea of what is the phone now. And what could it be. Does it have to be like this or are we going to be using the same kind of technology in different ways. It could be like those Goggles or whatever from that dude on Star Trek with like the exactly south already. Yeah I never watched shows. "So, Motorola, they are if you buy a Motorola phone, what's funny is I wrote this, like, three or four four years ago. Right. Said, if you care about softer updates don't buy droid phone, I specifically droid Motorola droid phones at the time. But now it just kind of falls into all Motorola phones for care about softer updates security updates do not by Motorola phones. They will not be updated. Shame shame. Well, yeah, shame. Yes, it's not it's not ideal. If you got the phones, I guess you do. All right. For your two year old phone. Not great now. It pisses me off. And as we were just talking about Motorola win when some goule exects running the company at one time, and they cared nineteen days, and they got updated. And now now they're committing to one major update for phone. And. All right. On a Verizon note, though, visible everyone, no visible visible. His bowl is a care, a wireless carrier owned by believe. It's at least backed by Verizon and some form of rising people work there and stuff like that anyway. They're prepaid. They're prepaid carrier who sells Verizon service and it's all done within an app, so they call themselves like digital only carrier something, but it's prepaid service on Verizon's network costs forty bucks per month and it's unlimited data..

"And then I could just fold it in half and have sort of something that's a bit more pocket -able in my Levi five once, you know, something like that could be really cool also similar to what they're supposed to be doing with, Motorola, and a razor concept that kind of stuff that kind of stuff I like better. I don't like I don't want a mini tablet that can kind of fit in a pair of cargo pants. I want. Want a smaller phone that can be a bigger phone when I need it. That to me makes me a lot happier. Yeah. Motorola razor, the the the razor concept, not the razor phone from razor, the gaming manufacturer, the modo razor. Moomins four my worry with the phone doing everything is will hold up over time. I think it's never good idea to put all your eggs in one basket that is an absolutely fair criticism in an age where none of our phones are really that repairable moon. Seventy four does the eight still have el-jisr Q slide apps sort of you have a ticker that replaces the second screen. So it's like this little sliding bar slide screen thing. It's kind of like an edge edge panel on a Samsung phone, but I tended to sable that kind of stuff, but a lot of those little like note and quick quick access apps are still there. I just I don't feel like they really brought much of a benefit to the overall phone phone usage. And you have to know they're there, and you have to practice using them in you have to get good at them. And then if you switch to another phone, they're different, you know. So like what I used to have with Q slide and some of those Dhakal service. On a flex are totally different than what we got on like a g six so that kind of stuff, I think gets an L way. Because that's absolutely another fair criticism of LG is while I think that the stuff has been improving hasn't been consistent. So there will be these hard interruptions, where a service changes or a feature changes in a way, which is very unfamiliar. I think we saw that a lot like when we were sort of G five era. They're trying to make the friends thing happen and just the G five was not a good a not a great phone. But when they made those adjustments they also did things like, oh, well, we're just going to go with an Asian style. Launcher? So you don't get an app drawer? That's that's a dumb move on her dumb change to make. And then they walked it back. You know, like they had to put out an update or they corrected that. So those types of things are always difficult for me to unravel. So I tend to not use them because I have to switch phones so often I ten. To try and keep a pretty cleanly out. That's easily accessible, and I don't see so much of the benefit. We're like Samsung's. Custom software LG's custom software when then you pick up a pixel or a one, plus or my not and nine and the general you is just.

"I think it's a cool way to maximize screen Abbadi ratio. So I think it looks like a cool phone. And Motorola software usually is pretty lightweight and the Snapdragon six, thirty six. It's going to be fine. It's going to get the job done. I, I just, you know, reme- from a former Motorola user of many years. It's just, I think it's I can't say that it's Lenovo. I don't know who is doing this. I just pisses me off the company that came up with designs like the razor. The came up with Zein's like the Moto x. the came up with so many innovative concepts that I feel it was either bad marketing or what I don't care what went wrong. I just know that the Motorola that pretty much got me into the cell phone industry, many years ago, coudn't one of a Vader or Vulcan or startac or stuff like that says. So this is what you're making of the most iconic cellphone designs that I've ever seen because for me they are. This is what you're making of it. You're making a rip off of another company like, seriously, that's my so many. There's so many of locations behind it. And just in case anybody who's watching the live right now. Or watching the video. Notice I brought out the Moto x. want to say, this is the twenty fourteen addition and original. Got it in the hump on the opo. Find x.'s literally the same as yeah. Yeah, Elliot, true highs right appear. So this was when this was this was an a time when Motorola really like, okay, I get that the modal Mods are supposed to be a way of customizing the devices in one, but when it's when it's an intrinsic part of the phone and not just something you kinda plaster on, it gives the phone more of an identity, and it's that level of design that people really crave for because it gives it gives not only the line, but also the user, a certain identity. I even have my life's motto down here. The next moment, a engraved on the bottom of this phone. And you know, Bambu I was all about bamboo phones back then including the oneness that was this is a great phone. Yeah, and I just get really. I don't really care too much that the phone resemble something so much because they're a couple. There's one. There's one remark in the top chat right now over at the YouTube channel. Renato LaPorte says, maybe this is just what Israel wants. They want a mid range phone, ten running Android. Yeah. So if the design of the iphone ten is desirable, but of course there's no Android on it then. Okay. I kinda get where some people may be coming from that. There's a demand for a phone that has the look of the iphone ten and then it's Android. So that's really just that's what I think is happening here and the implications of the markets being in Asia and what they want. You know, those are all things that we can speculate upon. But ultimately, Motorola, just in general, I just, I don't know. I don't know where they have. I don't know what has happened. I don't know where they've gone. The Moto x. was a great line that ended up getting relegated into the motos e the Mosey is not that bad. It's never been bad. It just isn't as exciting as the Moto x. used to be so to see the thirty come out. It's like, I don't know. Maybe this is the culmination of these feelings I've had for the last couple of days dropped off, but I remember him telling me something very interesting..

"Checking out and up and also all the midrangers as you've said working on all the carriers as well so i mean it's just it's not fair to the good work that they do it's little things like those that z to force it said busy to on just those the it do that i don't know who to really blame here whether it's butler nova side or the motorola not just in a sense of like heart of like hard decisions made at this sprinter that branch but just as your personality speaking because a hero there you have these ways of integrating business into each and every little a division of the company but still it's still there if just beyond mode oman experiment ends or if the modal might experiment changes significantly it you know next year or the year after that's going to be bad so this is exactly one of those one of those situations where i think motorola really needs to get out ahead of the conversation on white future compatibility on what these lifestyle life cycles are going to look like if there's an upgrade path because the phones themselves like i think motorola nails what they set out to do i haven't had any major issues with their products yolk when judged against the claims that they are making is the manufacturer i think motorola's phones have been on point but i have a little unease about some of the recommendations when you know what you pay foreign a motorola flagship right now is buying into a modular ecosystems so your phone there's an idea that your phone is in a way incomplete and you're going to be adding things to it to make it the best phone for you or the best experience for you and i want to recommend that because i think there is merit to that argument but i don't want to recommend that one year and then find that the very next year all of that goes right out the window.

"They decided to acquire motorola now this was for two reasons the primary reason than what they said at the time and in retrospect probably continue to justify was for patten reasons there was a lot of litigation happening in the smart from world um and in particular in the smartphone operating system world at this point um and and enter it of course was opensource so they needed patent protection motorola had a large patten portfolio but they did actually acquire all of their smartphone manufacturing business as well and they spent a lot of money for it um the operated motorola for a about two and a half years and and the released a number of devices smartphones come at all ranges from low end the high end a want particularly successful um and then they sold it to the chinese company lenovo in 2014 for about three billion sleep paid twelve with a half billion for it the kept the patents they also sold another piece of motorola's business which makes the cable boxes for your house who for comcast or time warner whatever um they sold that off for i believe about two and a half billion rate after they did the transaction so let's say that pit ten billion net for motorola uh and then two and a half years later they sell it for three billion under 3 billion so so not a good not an auspicious beginning to google efforts in the smartphone now or business now as i mean if you're shareholder right now like you need a little bit of an explanation.

"Yes we really hate final vowels in motorola products singular would become the partnered carrier for this phone so you really have three big companies all working together to create something new you had the hardware and the operating system coming from other role i you had the i tunes functionality coming from apple and these service coming from cingular now the rocker was meant to be a bridge between phones and mp three players but apple developers didn't really want to give motorola too much so they purposefully designed the i tunes functionality with limitations so that apple would go and create its own product rival it would make sense for apple to help motorola create a product that would complete compete directly with the ipod and so the i tunes functionality was severely limited as a result the dallas intially confirmed this when he talked with merchant during a interviews for that book i was mentioning earlier in the episode that this is pretty much the planet apple all along that they had purposefully nourished the i tunes functionality so that they could avoid cannibalising their own sales and also possibly set up a phone project at apple later on and when steve jobs finally debuted the motorola rocker which some were a calling the itu's phone and this happened in two thousand five he was visibly not into it and there are some glitches during his presentation that did not help and so jobs did kind of a pivot during the event he was also there to talk about the ipod nanno at particularly small version of the ibod with some limited functionality at a lower price point than the other ipod lines and he kind of buried the rocker any kind of talked about how the nanno could hold as many songs as the rocker could and motorola executives were not thrilled by this.

"And it does so the arl's rolling back through some and i'm seeing some shots it indoors that are one 20th a one 15th it's like you're never gonna be able to take a and they're still not clear or bright by the way are still kind of grainy bochy because the processing distill as a right but it's like you're really introducing i talked about it in my second opinion of like you don't have any confidence in his camera in low light situations i take i would never just take one photo i would take like four or five photos and hope that one of them turned out now to be fair to the absolutely fair to motorola devil's advocate here maybe it's the bug the phone isn't widely available ito or just became widely available does not in a lot of people's hands for a long enough time to find it maybe there's a a bug at play but something's wrong room so i would agree with you except for the fact that you know andrew nye both he is t mobile unit i've of verizon unit we both got oh ta updates over the weekend it didn't change a thing at these for mynatt didn't and it and motorola has a history of this it's not just the z to force iin admitted i was reaching i n no no i appreciate it look i'm look i am the biggest motto fan i'm i'm up to the point where i would probably be if it was it if it's if it's just evaluating the experience i could even be called a fan boy i love motorola experiences i think that they have done a great job over the years despite the you know the the nit picky issues i just think that this is a company that has led its let itself up to this point i felt like this was a turning point for motorola and it it's just it did not live up to expectations this is the first seven hundred twenty dollar motorola phone.

"Or or 1103 population might uh but it's funny how simple it's interesting that they do it i i completely agree it up i'm with you on that but you know the the number of people that could actually understand or over cover conversation about three puddles is seemingly rapidly diminishing or but why would they do that because it's it's it's it's only that he took it to be debts staying it's an anomaly that's indicative of something because it's it's the anomalies kelly all the stories so so in my opinion that the the these companies are not filled with with idiots epa that's why i asked the business model question because it strikes me you know look let's think about a fingers before the iphone when apple to deal with motorola which certainly didn't do much but presumably they learn things and maybe that inform them about potholes they wanted to avoid or who knows during that the long process of actually creating the iphone and i that's why wonderful see some signalling near the next couple of years with new entrance either with a west participation or some other level of uh you know getting to know each other in a deeper way y'all to so many like this is a great thing about the show shows that we we explore so many of the dimensions and it's it's it's easy to discover some insight along one dimension and then call it i got it you know that's that's the knowing enough to be dangerous problem mine that no doubt about it so that was might has taken after initially a really fixated on production and i think that production is still one of the key pillars but it's almost like the ten commandments you gotta look at all of them is is a you gotta you gotta look at at the production but he also get a look at.
