Can Palantir Be Used For Good?
On today’s show, host Will Oremus looks at the fallout from Amazon’s announcement last week that they’re abandoning plans for a new headquarters in New York City. Some celebrated it as a victory; others mourned a missed opportunity; still others were mad that Amazon took its ball and went home, rather than negotiating a fairer deal. Then, April Glaser talks with Faine Greenwood from the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative, where she focuses on the role of drones and data intensive foreign aid projects. Her latest piece for Slate is headlined “Why Humanitarians Are Worried About Palantir’s New Partnership With the U.N.” 6:02 - Interview with Faine Greenwood23:15 - Don’t Close My TabsStories discussed on the show: Slate: New York’s Anti-Amazon Movement Is Now a Blueprint for Critics of Big TechSlate: Why Humanitarians Are Worried About Palantir’s New Partnership With the U.N.Don’t Close My Tabs:April: The New Yorker: Private mossad for HireWill: Wired: AR Will Spark The Next Big Tech Platform-Call It MirrorworldPodcast production by Max JacobsYou can get updates about what’s coming up next by following us on Twitter @ifthenpod. Operation Unorthodox: Ep. 148
This week on Unorthodox, we're all about Eichmann. We sit down with Operation Finale director Chris Weitz and actor Nick Kroll to discuss the new film, which depicts the 1960 covert mission to capture Adolf Eichmann, the Nazi architect of the Final Solution, who was living under an assumed identity in Argentina. Kroll, who is best known as a comic actor, plays Rafi Eitan, the Shin Bet leader who coordinated the mission, alongside Oscar Isaac as legendary Mossad agent Peter Malkin, Ben Kingsley as Eichmann, and French actress Mélanie Laurent, of Inglourious Basterds fame. They tell us how their respective backgrounds and upbringings, while different, each drew them to this film; what it was like to work with Ben Kingsley; and why telling this story now is more important than ever. Our summer fundraising effort is almost over! 161: Feedback Friday | How to Support a Friend Suffering from Addiction
Jordan Harbinger (@JordanHarbinger) and Jason DeFillippo (@jpdef) banter and take your comments and questions for Feedback Friday right here every week! If you want us to answer your question, register your feedback, or tell your story on one of our upcoming weekly Feedback Friday episodes, drop us a line at email@example.com. Now, let's dive in! On This Week's Feedback Friday, We Discuss: Is your passively stoic expression (aka resting bitch face) getting you turned down for promotions? Here's some advice for turning down the Spock and cranking up the rock. How can you reduce stress and have a social life when your deadly serious job requires you to be on call 24/7/365? In trying new ways to strike up conversations without coming across as having a motive or being awkward, how do you spot the line you shouldn't cross? Are you missing out on life by not spending as much time and energy on your relationships and friendships in your 20s because you're so focused on personal development? For a year and a half, Your drug-abusing friend's been cut out of your life for ignoring the help you offered. Now he's in rehab and you don't feel much like re-engaging. Are you being selfish? You're understandably skittish about taking your dog out after he was attacked and severely injured by a bigger, unleashed dog. How can you reintroduce him to socializing, get the irresponsible owner to cover vet expenses, and prevent this from happening in the future? Is working for your significant other's brother's business -- even though you're not really qualified yet -- an opportunity or trouble waiting to happen? There are many issues at stake here, not the least of which is: what happens if you break up? Are cryptocurrency and blockchain technologies still relevant in 2019? Pro Tip: If you use AT&T, download the AT&T Call Protect app, which crowdsources spam and robocaller information. Recommendation of the Week: Inside The Mossad Quick shoutout to Mitchell Smith!
