Why Did Mitsubishi Furlough the SpaceJet?

"Development of the Mitsubishi regional jet kicked off with great fanfare in two thousand, eight, the to family aircraft offered an environmentally friendly design and state of the Art Pratt and Whitney geared turbofan engines. It was also a milestone for Japan's aerospace industry, which has developed just one complete commercial aircraft since World War Two. The Y. S. eleven turboprop, which ceased production in nineteen, seventy four. Aircraft Lesser Titan Steven udvar-hazy told Mitsubishi at the time that if it could pull the program off, it could quote do what Toyota has done in cars and quote, first deliveries were targeted for two thousand thirteen, but that date came and went, and the program struggled with repeated delays. Recently rechristened the space jet, the program seemed to have stabilized, and then the covid nineteen crisis hit faced with its parent company's need to drastically cut expenses. Mitsubishi aircraft has suspended development of one of the to space. Joe Models halted test flights and wound down production. So. Can the program survive this setback? And how does it alter the already turbulent dynamics in the regional jet market? Joining me to try to make sense of all this are Bradley. Parrot, aviation weeks Beijing bureau chief who has followed the Mr J.. procreate spaceship program for many. And in Frankfurt, aviation weeks executive editor for Commercial Aviation Jens Flottau so, Brad, let's start with you. Would you fill us in on? What's going on with the space jet? Yes, there's a very apt metaphor we can use basically the programs being fellow D- Justice and employer over the past few months may have told her a worker to start working. Just go home, but bought consider him or herself sack. The the sorry Nyj I had space jet. Basic Development is basically being welcomed down to a very slow low level It's not being completely. Stop so far as I can tell and very little is happening for the moment for how long well we don't know, but just as an employee as being followed has not has not been set. The Emma J program has not been canceled. Sorry, spaceship program, forcet an Olympic explain exactly what what is flowing amounts to. The company has six prototypes which are being completed. There were four main tests light. Light, base, in Moses Lake in Washington that fleet was waiting for another aircraft, the sixth most recently built one, which is the one which is crucial cruise, one is the one that actually embodies the the standard of design which can be certified, and the aircraft was supposed to go was supposed to carry the main burden of the remaining flat testing that was a situation as about three months ago two months ago. what's happened now of course is that. Is that the mostly basis bay multiple? The small remaining there just to maintain the the prototypes. That's important. They're not being scrapped or anything like that to being maintained and that six prototype which has finally finished in March is still in Meghalaya, and that's where it's interesting for the moment. At the State of the program, most development is actually flight testing, and they're not doing The production will. Production is continuing for the eighth off seven speed finished. The eighth is, we'll be finished. But other production is being stopped. which will mean -Tory work. Flight testing work. What's left? The development engineering team, and that's going to be reduced to some extent, and that's basically what's going to be puttering along for the duration one lost. Important point is that. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries which is the majority owner of Mitsubishi. Aircraft decided in early May to go ahead with the purchase of Combodia CJ program, including factories that indicates love commitment to the program. Brats I'm I mean the the most intriguing part of the to be at least is the shelving of the M one hundred at the smaller. Version of the two, and as far as I can tell, they are going back to the Bronx drawing. Bolt for this program now that it has finally become a scope compliance the US. I'm just curious. Do you have any indications about what's that's relaunch might entail is becoming bigger is becoming smaller was a would at all. No simple answer is no. They probably don't themselves

Boeing to inspect undelivered 737 Maxes for foreign object debris

"Brian has to do with Seven three Mac Boeing announcing that it will start doing inspections on more than four hundred seven. Three seven maxes that have been filled but not yet delivered these taxes that are parked in Renton Moses Lake. A number of other areas out west Essentially what's going on? Is that inspections of some of these aircraft revealed that they found what's known as foreign object debris in some of those maxes and as a result. They said we're going to do inspections on every one of these. Max is to make sure that they also do not have foreign object debris the importance here is that five or foreign object debris. You don't want that floating around in a plane. It could be a screw. It could be. Nut was left in their by the team when they were building the plane. You don't want that floating around inside any aircraft that could cause a short circuit. Some other issues are with the wiring inside the plane so again. Boeing is going to be doing inspections on all of the seven three seven. Max is more than four hundred that are built not yet delivered the important question here. Brian that I asked Boeing. And they say emphatically. It does not change the company's projection for recertification and on grounding of the seven three seven. Max. They still expect that to happen by the middle of this year. Even with these inspections taking place. Okay Phil we're all kind of look at each other around the table here you're talking about four nine debris. I don't WanNa put you on the spot but is this stuff that just time and wear and tear may have resulted in or is there any kind of suspicion this as a manufacturing flaws? What are we potentially talking about here? Not Because of wear and tear this is more in the case of in the course of manufacturing and aircraft sometimes they will do inspections throughout the process. And if you go to the Boeing plants there are signs everywhere saying do not allow foreign object debris it's the same situation at Airbus and this is a case where they've been doing. Their routine inspections of the Max is that part They found foreign object debris in some of the aircraft that they inspected so being prudent and being safety conscious. Because you've got to be now more than ever with the Max. They're just going do inspections on all of these aircraft before they are delivered. Hey fell it's Tim. To the point how. How COMMON IS FOREIGN OBJECT DEBRIS? And if this was not Boeing and this was another airline manufacturer would this be? It wouldn't be news in case you found it inside an aircraft that's coming off assembly line I'm sure that occasionally they do come across for an object debris The concern here is that you want to find it before you deliver these aircraft and the fact that they are now going to be doing these inspections if word got out that they were doing. These inspections people would immediately say. Here's another issue. And what Boeing is doing here is saying look we found some foreign object debris we wanna make sure that all of these planes are one hundred percent clean when we finally start delivering them starting potentially by the middle of this year and then moving into the fall and early next year all right Philibeaux there. With the breaking news on Boeing field. Thank you very much. Tim Come back to you. I mean it was a good question. He asked me how common. It's kind of an odd story. Does it does it. Sort of muddle the Boeing story even further. Well done a great job reporting on Boeing. And there's a lot of different headlines some of them really are important from a news event perspective and the evolution of the story. But they're not necessarily going to affect the stock but it is very important the time line that you get back to production so if there's some sense that this could push it back even more it's absolutely material. It sounds like this is not material and and I do think that a lot of the headlines we've had with Boeing including the company going out of their way to say they're going to be extra thorough they don't know they don't know why the a lot of that is geared toward the regulators. They wanted to make a certain posture in the eyes of the FAA. So this news is very important. I don't think it changes anything in terms of the time on three sixty five is a level that if you recall when this entire thing started that's where it broke down to me and very quietly. He's up probably ten eleven percent since January low. Maybe people are saying you know we want to get ahead of this prior to re certification this summer in terms of getting along the stock but three thirty five or so where it is to me. It's a sort of muddled in the middle dead money. We bring up two or five year chart. Guy's a boy. I WanNa make a point. Is that if you look at Boeing and understand the last year's been dominated guy by the 737 Max but if you look back. Two years that chart stock for a year didn't do anything. It wasn't like Boeing was a big moneymaker for investors even prior to these that huge run up to I think it was the four forty level or so. I mean that was a monster move in terms of context with the broader market. And it's given obviously thirty five percent of it back or so but you're right over the course of the time you just outlined. It's basically flat. I think people are not taking into account the full story which is aerospace defense sector which I think is undervalued but until this gets sorted out which. I don't think we're anywhere close to think you leave it alone. I think that's the riskier I mean. They'VE MISSED EVERY NOT MISSED. But there's been multiple times where they said you know what this is going to come back and service in the spring in the summer in the fall and now everybody assuming it's GonNa come again. And those deadlines come and go and it may not be up to Boeing. The company is likely up to the regulators. And they're not going to let anything go so I would not have a lot of confidence. I don't have a lot of confidence in these timelines. Okay they're good stuff guys on

"The hundreds now how of planes parked all over the country awaiting delivery wants the grounding lifted Might have additional work required or other special things involved such that the FAA has said. It's I don't say revoking but sort of suspending maybe ability to issue the operating rating certificate directly are licensed directly and so basically historically like decade delegated authority. said it if you can prove that meets all of these standards your people boga throw at checkout fine. Good saves US time and energy to whether it's politically motivated based on all congressional hearings and everything else and people saying Boeing Alternate shot or really problems or anything else. What it seems is happening now is that the EPA has decided not to let Boeing? Do that for this next the release of all the Produced but grounded lanes. So will that mean that an FAA licensor will have to come in Battery Son's staff out to do all of those final inspections before and also like somebody's just inspection that is working as opposed to then part of it is like did they store it right and put back outright outright and all those other things yeah yeah. It's it's interesting to me just because it does show like again. I'm not sure it's politically motivated are sort of based in the reality is what's needed. It shows that the EPA is stepping up a little bit. I think yeah I just you know the cost net and there's a now of a new cost in all of this right it's hopefully Boeing would pay for for the license. Fa out yeah. That's interesting point. I'm not sure how that works because like it's not one of the things like where you Boeing pays x dollars also able to licensed Cincinnati money. Move somewhere else. I don't think But would probably has the people on staff is. It's not GonNa go out and hire a bunch of times to license difference. I don't think hopefully not the census so you know it's funny though is I sort of temporary sorta raises an interesting question is Boeing has been hiring or trying to hire aggressively at Moses Lake Your eastern Washington which is where they're storing a lot of the planes in which is apparently where they intend to do a a lot of the On grounding were were all the stored so it'll take stored wants fun to Moses Lake Polish oppression of whatever and then license in there. "Students need to needs a. Heavy emphasis on math Matic's Reading and writing comprehension Communication okay in the forcing me really need is leadership skills because what's one AFC with young people now interacting, with others, interacting was let's say, a manager, at work you, know taking on. Responsibility seen young people now. They're dummies joining us they don't know how. To lead leadership communication so I'll take my, answer on the air but unless there are major changes and, like, I said before mathematics English, and writing comprehension communications also preferring young people once they graduate from high school leadership skills getting somebody. For the real world the problem with the education system is it's too flooded all of these courses -nificant a. Us, in real life well that's. The key to nNcholas he's got a, lot on the. Plate, but go ahead yeah there's a lot of good lot, of good points, and, and you know we're. We're the same age so we're We're, we're speaking about a, lot of, the similar things, I don't like. To blame young people for. What's happened to them you know it's you. Know it's not their fault about the world, that they were born into I I think that I want, to, look at the adults and, say what are we doing for for young people and and I was talking you know what I. Was talking when I was talking with my wife about coming on this show she was talking to one of. Her, friends she's a school administrator. And the school administrators said that kindergarteners, love to or. At, least used to love to go into school but by, the end by, third, grade they hate going. To school Yeah So basically the students you're seeing coming out of high school who don't know, anything you, know, I I would say that the schools are are no longer engaging them in a meaningful. Way they're looking for meeting on, cellphones their looking meaning for, friends and and so what what I want to do is try to make school interesting for young people figure out how to make it a rewarding. Experience and you know it's not just. Fun it's. Interesting it's inside something inside of you makes you want to, learn and I think good schools can do that and and teacher and good. Teachers good? Teachers, yeah good teachers, touching you, know making a connection with the student and saying how had to get the student to want to go to the forefront of human. Knowledge if they're interested in, baseball how can we harness start to get them interested in math if they're interested in? Sailboats how can we use that to get them interested in? Physics so that's what I want to. Say I'm wary of one. Size Fits all our or mandating courses I'm I'm for freedom I want communities to decide about how their best going to engage young people let's go. To David in Spokane Washington now west. Of the. Rockies good morning David go ahead sir yeah I'd like to, tell your gifts about a totally different perspective on on the on the subject. Matter because? I, went to a, school in, Moses Lake Washington that was just the opposite of the kind of school your son went to it was a very large it was. Only high school there was, no private schools and it was a very large school I think it was like a? Thousand students so all the students in the whole county went? There and the whole mentality was sort. Of a mass production mentality And it. Was a very personalized institutionalized. Feeling you know I've had. A years and years to, think about you know my high school. In my high school experiences and I can. Honestly say that they were the most miserable experience in my whole life was in when I was in high school Most of the students there he. Was I thought it was more or less now they think about it was more of a babysitting agency because. A lot of schools students were also really afraid, care, because I'm like what George was saying how they were so afraid yet, to kick students out we had just the opposite problem we had who loves and. Bullies and thugs just terrorize the rest of the students and know anything about it and I asked adults about it and they said well the reason why is because as long as the students are in school. They get money from the federal, government so they don't want. To, kick. Them out and so. They just keep all these problems students in..
