"Good luck to you now on Colorado's Morning news Already this week In just the first couple of days, Joe Biden has issued executive orders to end the Trump administration's ban on travel from Muslim majority countries. The president is also decided to stop the construction of the border wall with Mexico. Immigration activists hope Congress will also act We are at this moment going to take a look at the changing immigration policy with forward got US Colorado State director Morrison Molina Mercy Good morning. Good morning. You have to, At least I guess be somewhat encouraged and excited about these proposals. And when you hear the president speak about some of the initiatives he's taking. Yeah, absolutely. We're very encouraged by the immediate steps that the Biden administration is taking. You know, I think, particularly to restore us moral leadership when it comes to immigration, and I think seeing them put this proposal forward really makes us think that we're on the right track. Doing right by millions of hardworking immigrants who have really helped keep all of us. They've been in care for during the pandemic, so many of them are on those potential fields, keeping our country going right now. But in the Senate, at least, there's a very slim Democrat majority. One vote essentially the tie breaking vote from the vice president. What are the proposals that you think have the most bipartisan support is it? Finding a path of citizenship for dreamers. Absolutely. I think one of the things that I like to remind folks is that there's actually strong bipartisan support for immigration policies. About three and four Americans on both sides of the aisle support a pathway to permanent legal status. We're all undocumented. Immigrants. So this really is a time that is perfect for this type of reform. And I think, um, really, with the tone that President Biden has set around, you know, we have to work with one another. We have to reach across the aisle. We're ready. Tow work with folks who are ready to find common sense solutions to a problem that we've had to deal with for a long time. And so for us, the gold remains the same. We're going to talk to folks who are who are ready to come to the table with solutions and work with them to ensure that we create a pathway to legalization. Yes, for dreamers, right? I'm a dreamer myself. I want that to be true for me and thousands of others. But I also think it's time for us to push her to be a pathway to legalization for 11. Million folks will allow undocumented in our country. Yeah, mercy to burrow down on that. If I was just giving some of the notes, is it the path released that Biden is floating out of suggesting is that eight years is that fast enough? Is that too long is that maybe the compromise that people who have anti immigrant sentiments will say fine. They'll have this path. But it has to be this long Do you? Is that equitable to you? You know, I think when we talked about this pathway to citizenship, we've always talked about it being an earned packages Citizenship since I think having set forth and plan that lays out an eight year trajectory, it's exciting. And I think we welcome those opportunities. TOC. Those plants be put in motion because you know, for four years we were attacked by the Trump administration and really harmful policies were an act and I think to see The more real policy changes in a real pathway for what this can look like, is welcome news to all of us before we run. I think there are fears on the other side of the aisle that with Biden and office, the borders were just gonna open. Why there will be a free for all doesn't have to be some policy to stem the tide of millions of people who would love to live here and maybe move here illegally. Look, I think for many years we have been supporting effective measures at the border to manage our nation's border. Right. We know that the construction of the border well, if one of those smart, effective management these, um So over the years of order has already been abortion. I think we have strong presses. Um, by U S Border Patrol. We have smart technology at the border as well. And I think what we have to remember Is that in order for all of these things to work We also have to update on immigration system that's been broken for a long time. Because if we don't have strong legal avenues for people to come into the country, um if we aren't able to reform our immigration system to allow millions of people to earn a pathway to citizenship, we're gonna continue to live in this outdated system of immigration. That is gonna force people to seek these different methods of coming to the U. S inside. He's really thinking about it's not just about creating the pathway to citizenship looks yes, that's important. It's also about restoring legal avenues of immigration to the country. That makes sense for the needs that our country has. It is important to think through. How are we going to create humane policies that allow people to seek refuge at our borders in a way that it's orderly, But also he made toe All of that, miss. So the problem is that just left little money at the border and figure it out. It's about how do we make sure that the system as a whole is working And right now it's not. State director for forward Got US, Colorado? That is mercy. Molina. Thank you, Marisa. Thank you from talking about immigration to talking about masks to mask or not to mask while President Biden is instituting a mandate in all federal buildings.
