"Mahalia Jackson Trouble of the world. This is, uh Inspired this choice. I mean, my digging through her catalog was inspired by watching a movie recently called Summer of Soul documentary That's come in July 2nd through Julia. It's called Summer of Soul. Or when the revolution could not be televised. It's a film that was very released. Well, it was premiered at Sundance Film Festival this past Sundance Film Festival, directed by Quest Love. That's where it had its world premiere. It's going to be up on Hulu July 2nd. The documentary examines the 1969 Harlem cultural Festival, which I had never heard about. And I suspect most of you listening had never heard about. It happened at Mount Morris Park, which is now Marcus Garvey Park in Harlem. Six weeks in the summer of 69. Same summer as Woodstock all shot multi camera recorded incredibly well. All the tapes all the master tapes, all the audio tapes sat in a basement for 50 years. For 50 years. They couldn't get the thing released, and it's now been cut together by Questlove and the movies coming out, But the performances are astounding. Uh, 19 year old Stevie Wonder's in the movie. Fifth Dimension. Gladys Knight and the Pips Lie and the Family Stone, Mongo Santamaria and a heart stopping performance by Mahalia Jackson. Shot so incredibly well and so beautifully I'd never seen Footage of Mahalia Jackson singing in this particular way. It's just astounding. Nina Simone's in the movie Abbey Lincoln, Max Roach. Anyway, I saw this movie recently and Met with the filmmakers and just sent me down a rabbit hole of Mahalia Jackson and trouble of the world is what clothes that set before that we heard from Kelly Cutler. This is a self titled studio album. Collaboration between British musicians and South African musicians brought together by the Kelly Cutler Library founders and in Johannesburg and the music duo. Cold cut and it's a fantastic collaborative project. The track that we heard from Kelly Cutler was just before Mahalia Jackson also in the set. We heard from Louis, the child with the chorus, and before that sounds who see with mercy Couple of tracks from salt. The duo from the UK in Chicago. They have four albums out now, Untitled Black is is what tracks we featured One of the tracks the title piece and wildfires from Salt. And then back in the set. Tony Allen, who passed away recently with some of the great UM and from the album, There is no end until Tony Allen project that featured Various special guests. Top of the set was 1968 Big Mama Thornton..

"Amtrak wants to charge the MTA. Access fees or rent. The MTA says it's upgrading the tracks in doing major repairs that will allow Amtrak to run thirty five percent more service. So cut us some slack on the fees. Amtrak says no way, plus the MTA is letting Amtrak approve all its designs and like so many big projects in this area. There's an old bridge involved in this case, it's the Pelham bay bridge. It runs over the Hudson river in the Bronx is over one hundred years old and needs to be replaced right now it just made it to cost another half a billion dollars. Amtrak wants the MTA to rebuild the bridge. The MTA does not Amtrak says it's working with him to resolve these issues. The MTA says Amtrak is frankly being greedy and they've been at this standstill since the fall. So once those fee issues are resolved will the project move forward, and can they possibly meet a twenty twenty two deadline. There's one more complicating factor to run more metro north trains, you need to have a place in New York City for those trains to terminate to do this. Several other projects have to be completed. You could call this an infrastructure ballet, I there's eastside access. That's the eleven billion dollar project, which will allow Long Island railroad trains to end to grant central terminal that's expected to be done by twenty twenty. Then there's the Moynihan station project, which will also shift some Long Island, railroad and Amtrak trains from Penn station to the new station across the street. Once those projects are completed. Ideally, there's more room at Penn station for those metro north trains. There would be heading to the east Bronx, and what do people in the east? Bronx say why did a self guided walking tour around the Morris park section. I found students and workers some of whom do live in Manhattan and said these stations would help cut down there commute by as much as forty five minutes one.

"You're listening to all things considered from NPR news. The MTA could be opening four new metro north train stations in east Bronx in as soon as four years the plan would transform an area that's home to large medical centers and universities and the largest op complex in the world coop city. This is part of the Bronx that also has one of the largest reverse commutes in the country, people going from the urban core Manhattan to the outskirts of the city the subway doesn't go there. Either right now they mostly rely on cars and buses joining us now to discuss WNYC's transportation reporter, Steven Nessin. Hey, Steven, Jamie. So I why don't you situate us geographically this project would add four new metro north stops in the east. Bronx writers would be able to get there from Penn station in about twenty minutes, and it wouldn't require the MTA to alter the landscape much. That's because unlike say the second. Stations where the MTA has to drill make a new tunnel. Then lay the tracks in this case, the tracks are already in place right now, they're used by Amtrak for trains that run on the line from Penn station to new Rochelle and up the northeast corridor. This project would add stations at hunts point park, Chester Morris park and co coop city and onto new Rochelle if they need the new stations would cost north of five hundred million dollars and New York state is already agreed to fund most of it. All right. So why are we hearing about this? Now is there some sort of deadline coming up. Not exactly the rough deadline is four years from now, but the city is holding its first and really one of the only public workshops on this project at four PM tomorrow at Albert Einstein college of medicine in Morris park, while four years sounds like a longtime away it's nothing in infrastructure years. So this workshop is where the public can weigh in on what services they would need along with the new stations scraped to have new stations. But there's a lot of potential impact in the area real estate values parking. I recently met up with the director of city planning in the Bronx. Carol samll who explained what she'll be listening for on Tuesday. How do the streets function? How do the buses connect to the station? What kind of land uses are around it. Do we want to rezone in order to have more density for different uses different kinds of uses not to mention parks schools and the retail needs of the area? All right, whenever I hear land use rezoning, I think conflict with the local community is this one of those not in my backyard projects at the city wants but local residents are going to resist. This is one of those rare projects that seems to have community by an end finds the city and MTA on the same page. They all want this to happen and happen quickly. But like all big projects. There are complications and roadblocks and this is one. Well, it seems simple on the face of it at four stations over tracks that already exist. It is not first of all the tracks are owned by Amtrak. And while the MTA has agreed to build the stations rebuild the tracks and signals.

"Amtrak wants to charge the MTA access fees or rent the MTA says it's upgrading the tracks in doing major repairs. The will allow Amtrak to run thirty five percent more service. So cut us some slack on the fees. Amtrak says no way, plus the MTA is leading Amtrak approve all its designs and like so many big projects in this area. There's an old bridge involved in this case, it's the Pelham bay bridge. It runs over the Hudson river in the Bronx is over one hundred years old and needs to be replaced right now. It's estimated to cost another half a billion dollars. Amtrak wants the MTA to rebuild the bridge. The MTA does not Amtrak says it's working with MTV to resolve these issues. You could call this an infrastructure ballet, I there's east side access. That's the eleven billion dollar project which. Will allow Long Island railroad trains to integrate central terminal that's expected to be done by twenty twenty. They found students and workers some of whom do live in Manhattan and said these stations would help cut down there commute by as much as forty five minutes one.

"I'm Jamie Floyd, the MTA could be opening four new metro north train stations in the east Bronx in as soon as four years the plan would transform an area that's home to large medical centers and universities and the largest op complex in the world coop city. This is part of the Bronx that also has one of the largest reverse commutes in the country, people going from the urban core Manhattan to the outskirts of the city the subway doesn't go there. Either right now they mostly rely on cars and buses. Joining us now to discuss WNYC's transportation reporter, Steven Nessim. Hey, Steven, Jamie. So I why don't you situate us? Geographically this project would add four new metro north stops in the east. Bronx writers would be able to get there from Penn station in about twenty minutes, and it wouldn't require the alter the landscape much. That's because unlike say the second half stations where the MTA has to drill make a new tunnel, then lay the tracks in this case, the tracks are already in place right now, they're used by Amtrak for trains that run on the line from Penn station to new Rochelle and up the northeast corridor. This project would add stations at hunts point park, Chester Morris park and co op city and onto new Rochelle if they need the new stations would cost north of five hundred million dollars in New York state is already agreed to fund most of it.
